How to Divorce the Male Lead

“…I’m screwed.”

On a normal day like any other, Duchess Juliana Auburn woke up from a dream. No, rather, it is I, “Lee Sian,” who remembered my past life.

Juliana Auburn was a character in a novel who did nothing but badmouth and find fault with her husband, his friends, and her own father who had forced her to marry an illegitimate man.

According to a spoiler comment that I read, she will be killed at the start of the novel.

“Why did I only remember everything now after I’ve already done all of those bad things to the male lead?!”

In order to avoid the novel’s “bad ending,” Juliana plans to divorce her husband, Evan, the male lead….

“I’ll give you everything you want.”

“Don’t you know that the one who falls in love first loses?”

“Why should I apologize for staring at you because you’re so pretty?”

…Isn’t my husband’s obsession more serious than I thought?

I'm not gonna rate because I'd be biased but this is one of my pet peeves of these types of stories. Makes me mad this genre is so popular that renditions include versions with this.

You actually did say and do all those bad things though??? You ARE that rude & arrogant person that would have met a bad end. You DID do all those things to other people. It's just that some supernatural force decided to help you out and show you your end if you continued like this. Does... more>> NOT mean you as a person is good at all!!! I hate this type of MC because I can't find it in me to wish for their happiness at all; *YOU* *DONT* *DESERVE* *IT*. You're still the same tr*shy person, it's not really "redemption" because this isn't so much "I realized I did a lot of cruel things and want to make up for it im so sorry" but rather "ouff for my own happiness I should change". Very different things.

So really another way of looking at this would be "GENUINE villainess finds a happy end because she learned the future". Seriously, imagine that white lotus b*tch you hate from some other story learning the future and finds a happy ending because she somehow learned the future one day, even though at the core they're still that same white lotus b*tch. I hate it so much.

Edit: @Smart Coconot San, most villainous stories are like that which is why I'm okay with them; it's a DIFFERENT person that somehow entered the body. However, in this story, it's just that she remembered her past life where she read her current life's story. This character IS an actual villain who chose to do all those bad things, it's just that now she has extra knowledge and knows her ending. It's the exact same person! <<less

I will read this when there's at least 30 chaps so I can review it properly.

I'm not against this kind of plot but I kinda agree with @ike_0000 rant. A supposedly villain suddenly becoming a goody two shoes and trying to reverse their life is quiet cliche at this time but in reality they are still originally villain. In others perspective, these villains are the real lotus b*tches. Think, every stories with these kinds of plot, the villains got their good ending and the supposed female lead end up being... more>> a villain because they failed to snatched back their crown as female leads.

IMHO, this depends on how the author delivered the story and how the characters development are build up. A lot of authors are just riding the wave now because these plots are on a roll this days. But a lot failed to write a decent stories. If you are like me who is addicted to novel, I'm sure you've encountered hundreds of same plot, same Mary Sue that need to be protected all the time, same timid and hated b*tch suddenly gathering male harem, same disfigured lady but suddenly invented a medicine that can restore beauty, same third miss from a general or prime minister family that gets bullied every damn time, same 21st OP medical genius that can cure literally everything, same dull lady but suddenly enlightened and saw the future becoming a brave lady in one night, same lady who got cheated by the husband or bf with their own sister or best friend, all kinds of abandoned sh*t female leads out there. (Blood spurting bec of anger😤). Okay, I'm good. Don't get me started with the male leads, I might cross over real time.

There's only few novels with generic plots but still shines because it was thoroughly written and perfectly delivered (and of course it also depends on how it was translated) <<less

Y'all mad but the novel seems to deliver what it promises: villainess learns of her future and tries to avoid it. It doesn't claim in any moment that she was a good girl, or turned inocent for remembering another life.

Particularly, I find a selfish protagonist refreshing. A good contrast to all these childish, inocent, good two shoes MPs.

Honestly, the chapter just got uploaded yet there's already a single one-star rating?!
Spoiler

How petty do you have to be...

The novel looks quite promising, as is the promotional webtoon, and am excited to see a doting ML and fluff :) Just hope FL won't to misunderstand things because of lack of communication.

@ike_00000 I understand what you're trying to say, but isn't it more like the villainess is someone else now. Like the idea of these novels is basically that some person in another world dies and gets reincarnated into a book, and we're talking about the villainess. So it's like a completely different person. It's not like they did this stuff to begin with. And even now if they have the same body it's basically like they're possessed with someone else's soul. I'm sorry if this is confusing, I tried I... more>> honestly did. <<less

Here I'm going to talk about the plot of the novel, not the translation.

Since the description, there is no promise that Juliana would become a good one. However, Evan's 'love' for her was taken for granted. The author doesn't create ways for the reader to sympathize or get attach with the characters, the lines are rather random and confusing. The way the premise is developed is very poor. Juliana chooses to remain a "villain", when in fact, her position is too childish and irrational. She chooses to destroy her reputation... more>> to demand a divorce even then and now. Along with a very futile reason for love at first sight, there is no evolution between the way Evan and Juliana relate.

I believe that the author's intention to keep the MC a villain even after the revelation of the past life would have been good if it had been performed in a more perpiscuous and intelligent way. Juliana wasn't the master mind of Evan's poisoning, she was blamed for something she didn't do. And instead of the author starting from that point, of preventing her from being framed, discovering the real perpetrator and maintaining a dignified image, the story went on a totally different path.

To have a clearer example about an ML who remains in love with the MC even though he knows about her villainous acts, it is "The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass". Asher fell in love with every detail of Aria, with her personality, cleverness and perception of the world.

Personally, reading this novel was bothersome, however, I suggest you read it yourself and see. Maybe your taste is different from mine. Do not take the reviews posted here as total true, go to the story, read and rate by yourself. To the translator who works so hard, thank you so much for your time, I hope there are other readers who appreciate your work more than I did. <<less

This is a review from another user named Zandra:

Spoiler

Juliana is a bit dim... She's scared Evan will kill her like in the original novel for being a villain, but is an absolute bit*h to her husband to get him to divorce her.... If there's no other option than letting the original FL and Evan fall in love with each other, then why not be nice to your husband and have an amicable divorce then. IDK, but that sounds like a plan that doesn't end in your death sentence as a villainess.

[collapse]

Honestly, I'm 13 chapters in, and all I can say is that I am ANGRY with her logic.. about how she decides to deal with her husband... Like WHAT THE HECK IM SOOO ANGRY I JUST WANNA DROP THIS. <<less

If my memory hasn't failed me, I think this might be the first non-gratuitous novel I've read where the setting involves a lead who's enamoured by an established villainess despite their obvious wrongdoings? The genre is wrought with cliches as it is, so I would never fault the writer for something so trivial. I am personally excited about actual redemption arcs as I do find it a shame at times that the original characters just disappear without getting to live out the rest of their stories. Lord knows there's plenty... more>> of those stories to choke on if actual villainesses aren't your cup of tea. Most arcs just progress from 'bully' to 'non-bully' so I consider it a nice change to have a villainess be all grown up and married. The male lead's infatuation makes for a strange personality quirk thus far so I'm looking forward to a fun read! <<less

I haven't read this so no rating I just want to throw this out there for everyone who is ranting because she was 'bad'. Do you like 'the Christmas carol'. Did you forgive mr. Scrooge? It's the same trope, technically it's a classic. Loved by millions. Personally I like the thought that some supernatural force might step in to help me when I need forgiveness because I'm really not perfect. Is redemption such a bad thing? I think we all need a little forgiveness sometimes right?

The story so far seems really cute. The ML seems head over heels in love with her so I hope to see the courting part and how she'll fall for him.

It's hard to read through the chapters that are repetitive of her emotionally hurting the male lead who's deeply in love with her. She often repeats in her monologue, her words came put meaner than she intended, but she will repeat her actions again, but in each chapter it becomes harsher. It's another trope of a tug-of-war relationship. The female lead gives me the major ick and red flag, thus I won't root for her. I understand she's trying to get out "alive, " but she's digging herself a deeper... more>> hole when her actions are similar to the OG villainess expect she asked for a divorce. <<less

I really like the story.

For some reasons, there hasn't been any updates since 2020 which makes me a bit sad. I sill check internet to see if there are news. I hate the fact that I like so many korean stories but I can't read korean. Guess, I will try to learn (it's so difficult though xDD)

Anyway, it's really a lovely and funny novel ♥

I like this story but I hope she won't success in divorcing with her husband. They seem like a cute ccouple and with her not harassing him anymore it should go well.

BEWARE for those that are not happy with ML being cheated on etc. ML is super possessive even after catching our MC (before gaining her past memories) with several lovers.

Basically he's messed up in the head but other than that I think its an interesting story lol. I mean its on the tag, no like it don't read it??? and villainess is also mentioned sooo... I like it, another cliché Villainess story to add to my collection xD.

Translation is great as well! Very flowy and understandable.

last update was dec2020 hoping it wasn't dropped

like it a lot!! Honestly the ML is kinda dark but in the best ways, which the MC was a bit more confident/villainous but she's just trying to survive and somehow get away from her husband. Excited to keep reading and fingers still crossed its not been dropped!
