I've read this a year ago and re-read it again. I STILL CERTAINLY LOVE THAT UNEXPECTED PLOT TWIST! Overall rating: 4.5.

Set at a magic kingdom which placed importance on social hierarchy and statuses, the story's focus was on the upper stratum of the society, so apart from the orphanages, most of the interactions exhibited the dynamics between master and servant, lord and subject, royalty and nobles, etc.

It started with the MC, who after failing to make the prince fall in love with her, was forced to stay at a dukedom... more>> that was handled by a lord (ML) with an ugly reputation. As implied by royal orders, they were expected by the society to marry each other and become the 'most fated' pairing of the society - a union formed between the most vicious villainess and the fattest toad. The story narrated their interactions in trying to become closer to one another, while solving problems and puzzles concerning the dukedom.

At first I thought this would be boring since MC's reputation hit rock bottom even before the story, so the usual path for the story would be redemption and revenge. In some way, it was indeed redemption and revenge, but the way on how these were achieve were indirect and unusual to the point that I, who like to piece information in deducing the next scenarios and result, did not predict those shocking events at all.

I blame it to the beautifully written plot - you think that those narrations just add emphasis and/or justification for what the characters think and feel? THINK AGAIN. THINK VERY VERY HARD. By the end of the story, all those loop holes were tightly plugged - all inconsistencies and mysteries solved. The significant characters have their own conclusions with respect to the scenes in the story - if they're not on the main story, they were on the extras.

Translation quality was good. Story build up was great. A VERY GOOD READ, the type that you'd think it was bland because of the slow start but was actually a gem when you finished and reflected on it. <<less

I was super skeptical of this story at first. Reading the summary, it sounded so shallow - villianess reforms a fat dude? What? But look at those high ratings!

Like the summary, this story is one where you start out taking all the characters as one-dimensional shallow beings and then end up realizing how deep they all go. It's also one of the best cases of foreshadowing I've seen in a light novel - when I got to the end, I just sat back stunned at how tightly woven all the... more>> plot threads were. Right from the very beginning, I could think of things I just accepted as "oh, that's how it is" that were actually hinting at the conclusion.

It's only flaw as a series is that unlike every other villianess novel in existence, Camilla just cannot catch a break. In that way it's also one of the more realistic depictions of a villianess - instead of having lots of people who understand her or being some transmigrated soul, she's just a hot-tempered regular girl who can't win debates because she gets so worked up and is easily manipulated because of that. You end up really sympathizing with her as she works toward her happy ending. <<less

TLDR One of the very best villainess novels out there 5 stars

If you want a novel that is both well written and well translated, with a complex plot, great characters and character development, and a well developed world this will satisfy your desires.

The characters are extremely believable in their nature and growth or lack thereof. Camilla and her parents are the prime example. While Camilla under the pressure of her circumstances grows throughout the narrative, her parents remain static and unresponsive. Alois on the other hand has internal growth... more>> and self awakening. In short all the characters have their own well defined journey.

The plot is complex and believable. It is layered, complex and in keeping with the setting. While towards the end there are moments where the author tries to piss off the reader it's minor. Overall it just ropes the reader in. <<less

Omg. How do I express myself after reading this? Lol idk but this story whew ? Got me in emotionally. Well yeah I’m an emotional person but anyways, reading the story and focusing on Camilla situation, she’s really a strong woman. I love her for that. All the things she’s been through and the frustration that she had but never cried for once about it, got me admiring her character. Cuz you dead ass know I did cry in her stead. Also this story is amazing in its own way,... more>> but I forgot this was a slow romance so it was killing me deep inside ?? But anyone who’s reading this should read it. Recommend it ? And thank the translator for translating this story ? <<less

I like the main leads. Their interaction and personalities are very realisitc. Since I don't know the whole story yet can't say much but all I can say that so far this story seems different from usual and the MC is really awesome in her own accord. An intense girl who refuses to bow down to others and continues to push through regardless of the hopeless situation she is in. Her personality certainly is realistic as can be seen from her monologue. The fat duke also seems like a crafty... more>> fox although he tries to hide it. <<less

One of the best in its genre.

I mostly agree with all the 4-5 stars reviews. Cliche storyline, you can predict how it will end, but the journey is a memorable one. Good world-building, giving enough information without being too deep (some are lacking, though it might bore people if there are lots of unnecessary information)

For those who are easily frustrated by characters' personalities, this might be an annoying read. But for those who like to put their feet in the characters' shoes, this will be a wonderful journey, especially... more>> the further you read and the more you understand them (yes, even the antagonists).

Pretty realistic in my opinion. You can feel the strength of the characters, but also how human they are. Not perfect, but I can sympathize, and for me, that's what's most important.

Absolutely recommended. <<less

I almost dropped this because MC was very annoying. I know that she is a straightforward woman and it's part of her charm but I can't tolerate body shaming. When she first came to Montchat territory, she directly ordered ML to take a diet because she was disgusted by his current appearance. She even didn't bother to hide her disgust and sometimes she directly insulted him. Just who did she think she was? She's not his bride yet and they just barely knew each other. And also it's not like... more>> ML also wanted to marry her out of his own will. No wonder ML thought her poorly at first and even the servants hated her.

But still I tried to endure continue reading it till the end. It surprisingly got interesting and fortunately, MC's behaviour gradually improved as she started to fall in love with ML. I love how she didn't instantly fall in love with him. She was actually experiencing a heart conflict for a long time because of his love for the prince. It's actually quite realistic because it didn't easy to let go of 10 years of love even it's an unrequited one.

The last arc was surprisingly unexpected. Don't read this if you don't want to know major spoiler of this story.

Spoiler

It turned out ML was the real Prince Julian who was swapped when he was a child with the real duke of Montchat. No wonder the servants around him didn't bother to listen to his order and even often abused him mentally. After all of it were revealed, MC turned from the worst villainess into the tragic herroine. Yes it was a very big face slapping moment.

A well done villainess story with a great story that showcased the growth of our MCs. The story feels more like a character piece, where our FL and ML come across one way, but through learning their stories their layers start to show and by getting closer to one another they start growing.

This was my very first novel on this website. But I found this story to be very enjoyable throughout.

There was no dragging romance, there isn't a generic love triangle, and the action resolves itself in a way that leaves me very satisfied in the end.

I adored Camilla, she has passion and courage to face the world head on, even against all the problems that was thrown at her. In no way is she a perfect character, but that's what I love her for. She knows where her heart is, but... more>> she's learned to grow out of that shell while spending time with Duke Alois and the other supporting characters. Over time, she becomes stronger as a person and moves on from her first love. It makes me happy that she's living her life.

I'd recommend this novel over and over again. Thank you for translating!! <<less

This LN is one of my favorite of all time. The first few chapters is sloooow pace good thing I sticked till a few more, and then I didn't realize that it slowly crawled into my heart and took an irreplaceable chamber. The slow romance is something you want to be marinated with. I love the MC, I can't seem to hate the villains. Characters have common sense that the majority of LNs lack in.

There are a lot of misunderstandings in this novel. Gossips ruin people's lives and this novel is a spot-on representation for that. The MC is a pure, simple, loving, brazen girl and she's a victim of this manipulative people around her.

I just wish she would mature and be more clever after all that's happened in her life, but that's just me. :) I think the male lead needs more screen time and photos after his physical development. I was actually excited for that as the MC keeps saying it over... more>> and over again throughout the story. But, oh well.

The story and the people's point of view are well explained. You really need to read the entire novel because there are a lot of twists and turns that is integral to the story development. I just love the thrill!

All in all, it's a good read. <<less

Quite an interesting novel with deep characters, an actual world outside of them, intrigue, and where the characters actually undergo progressive and interesting growth as people which is something I can only say for a handful of novels (I've read hundreds so that's quite the small number). Translation is also top tier and consistent on releases like this group always does so it's easy to read and quickly updated. An interesting story and certainly not what you expect going in.

Just finished reading the ending and wow, that may be the... more>> best build up to and pay off for an ending I've seen in anything ever. There are many 4/5 or 5/5 parts in this novel but the ending I would rate 6/5 because it so perfectly explains every question every raised by the series, all the consequences of every characters actions, and it really brings together and wraps up everything that was ever done or said in the whole story. Amazing character development, intrigue, mystery, everything the only negative of this novel is you want to reach through your computer and strangle 90% of the people in the story lol. <<less

I can't believe that I almost missed such an interesting story. I was just coincidently pass this novel and tried to read this novel for fun. Well, the picture and the title almost make me gave up to read this. Because there's nothing for me to read and I didn't lose anything I finally give it a try to read this novel.

I can't believe this is such an interesting story. I like the personality of the MC and the interaction between the two of them. I cried when the MC... more>> is being treated harshly before they tried to understand her and she ran away from home because of the duke/her fiance. Finally the duke realize his mistake and want to get close to her, at least she have the duke as her ally. I just hope justice will finally prevail for her! Thank goodness she's always stays positive and never let their harsh attitude bring her down, I really like that about her. Thanks for the chapter! :) <<less

I enjoyed this story quite a bit. From the premise it may seem to be primarily about romance, and there is some good romance there, but there's a lot more political intrigue and character study. There were some parts that could be frustrating to read or didn't seem to make sense at first, but it all comes together by the end. This is the kind of story where the author isn't afraid to take the risk of making characters, even the protagonist, deeply flawed, even if it might make them... more>> less likable. But in the end it results in a story where the characters all have quite a bit of depth too them and feel more real than in your typical story. The story also does a good job of writing the antagonists. It doesn't try to make rationalizations to justify the antagonists' actions, and the protagonist does not forgive them either, which is good because it means the protagonist is able to cut the toxic people out of her life by the end and be happier. Yet the antagonists do still have motives that are understandable enough that you can't truly hate them. They're more like the kinds of a**holes you meet in day to day life than storybook villains. I guess part of the point of this story is that the "hero/villain" framework and black-and-white thinking is not a good mindset to have in life. <<less

Masterpiece. They start by making it look like a flimsy bad main character, only for every last one of those deceptive elements to be used as rock-solid, engaging character development. Very well planned and executed.

Holy crap

This is it! This is the realistic aristocracy story I've always wanted! One in which the cast isn't a freaking one-in-a-millenium prodigy doing 4D chess battle against forces of evil. Nobody is trying to open the portal to hell, no one is summoning an archdemon, there's no country to save, there are no spies to conveniently provide information to progress the story. There's no matryoshka doll of layers to peel, no deep hidden meaning to uncover

This is a story of how awful politics is, and how ridiculously difficult it... more>> is to navigate

Each and every single character behaves in realistic manner. It's wonderful, I feel like crying just seeing how the characters don't change their minds at the drop of a hat

Over the course of the story, both the hero and heroine struggles with their inner demons. This isn't done by talking a little bit, this is handled by them opening up little by little, explaining their circumstances bit by bit.

The problems are solved practically. There's no cheesy scene where the heroine makes a passionate speech that melts an ice glacier. The heroine is helpless, nothing seems to go her way, she can only do minor things, if at all, and without any amazing powers or friends in high places, all she could do is grit her teeth and honestly react to things. She's not recognized for the results (of which there's barely any), she's recognized for her genuine effort, which allows others to see that she's not as bad as the story says

The hero too isn't a perfect person trying to play hard to catch. There are reasons to his actions, and he handles things the ruler way. Despite wielding mighty magic, he doesn't ride into battle to the frontlines like a gallant warrior, he doesn't have ingenuity to solve cases. He's an administrator, and he mostly solves things like an administrator would

The worldbuilding is also fantastic. There are certain holes that I can nitpick about and towards the end things get a little... hectic, but it doesn't change the quality of the story before that

Most amazingly is that the characters are down to earth. They don't say outrageous things, you can actually see where they're coming from and sympathize with them, even if you don't agree.

This novel has a lot of frustrating parts, it most definitely isn't fluff. It's serious, but not "dead serious".

The only regret I have after reading this novel, is that it raised the bar so high now I'll probably not enjoy other works so much

The translation quality is good. It bears little hallmarks of poor translations like leftover Japanese grammars, unnecessary Japanese words (e.g. "keikaku means plan"), it flows well. <<less

It is such a great read!

  • First of all, the translation is wonderful.
  • World building is given the time it needed for the story to ripen every arc.
  • New characters that are introduced are lovable.
  • Story progresses naturally.
  • More on politics than romance.
  • It just made sense, you know.
And I think that's about it. I really love it!

The most lovely and refreshing about this story are the characterizations, and I'm mostly writing because I disagree with some views.

Firstly, yes the ML is a big softie (both physically and metaphorically) in pretty much entire first half of the story. However, I can confidently say that character development plays a large and satisfying part in the latter half, tying into the plot nicely.

Secondly, the FL's personality definitely rubs some people the wrong way, being very obstinate, blunt, and short-tempered. But I like it because it's what I imagine a... more>> simple, standard villainess would be like -- stubborn enough to keep clinging to her love interest even though he is not into her. And that's the premise of her story, the jealous villainess who hurt the female lover and is punished. And for that, I don't fault some readers for hating it. Once again, the characterization really shines through:
Spoiler

Being a highly stubborn person, her personality doesn't change. But she does change her mind about the Duke, having fallen in love with him after all, which is also in character for someone who is honest to herself once she realizes her own feelings.

[collapse]
The author's strength is in acknowledging and accepting all her flaws.

Not to mention the side characters were very likable as well, with distinct and memorable traits.

For the fear of fatphobia, I agree with other reviewers in that it was handled well.
Spoiler

She even proclaims that she will love him despite his identity, face, or body, while remaining true to her personality in being honest about her preferences, and I even admire her for being honest with him.

[collapse]

So, for those scared by reviews about the characters, I would say give it chance past the first third, though I admit some people some may simply dislike the characters' personalities by the end anyway. I personally enjoyed the nuances very much. This isn't a complex, scheming villainess plot, and contains bits of fluff spread out carefully here and though. The story ranges from straightforward to humorous to even spots of darkness, depending on timeline and which character's point of view. I find the ending for all characters realistic and wouldn't have it any other way. The only unsatisfying part is
Spoiler

that there is no wedding scene! Just a brief mention in a letter.

At first I thought this was going to be a novel about a girl transmigrating into the role of a villainess but I was totally wrong. And that twist at the end was something I never expected!!!!!

At first Camille seems like an averagely hateful villainess but as the story goes on you get to see her reasons and what she did and didn't do. It totally changes your perspective on her. Alois also just seemed like a pushover but you can really see him change over the novel due to... more>> Camille.
Spoiler

especially in that scene where he runs after Camille when she runs away and gets mad at her.

[collapse]

It's a fun light hearted novel that will make you cry
Spoiler

especially that thing with her sister.... I had mixed feelings about her sister. At first I thought her sister hated her but then at the end she begs Camille not to abandon her??? And she was also the only one that write to Camille when she was forced to leave (even though those letters were filled with sarcasm and criticism)

[collapse]
. Its very bingeable cuz the chapters are short. I usually take forever to finish reading a novel but this was very interesting and I finished it in 2 days :)

Super major ending spoiler for myself.

Alois is actually prince julian and prince julian is Alois...
