One of the more enjoyable installments of Chestnut's Truly Precious verse, detailing a young couple's shaky beginnings and their subsequent rocky marriage turned divorce. Despite what the summary leads people to believe, their animosity for each other isn't that great or petty. 'He scanned the living room again. Several small photo frames were arranged throughout the room, all of them featuring him and Yang Wei. He took half and placed them in his suitcase. The ones he believed he was the most handsome in, he left behind in the living room.'

Well mostly. It's a lighthearted romcom fare so don't expect melodrama, just two people still madly in love with each other and leaving others scratching their head and thinking 'are you sure you guys are really over?'.

Spoiler

Qi Xiao Yan treated the divorce as more of a Cool Down Period for the both of them, because he knew if he left their personality clashes and problems attaining mutual understanding fester then they would really end up in separate ways with no chance of reconciliation.

Contrary to popular belief, his first love is his wife and not the young starlet that used to be his basketball team's manager ("Do you believe in love at first sight?" "No" "Before I met Yang Wei, neither did I.") .

He also tried to covertly understand his ex-wife's passion for art by signing up for her virtual class, which was a sweet gesture and showed his sincerity. He still worries about her well-being and checked his phone plus her social media for updates on her life as well as precautionary measures in case of emergency. He also took great efforts to make romantic gestures as her ex-husband turned boyfriend, which yielded hilarious results. All in all still a dedicated husband. Is it any wander she still choose him? Lousy second male lead aside.

[collapse]

My real beef towards this story is the lousy second make lead, even if I knew very well that the author only put him there as a plot device to move the Divorce Couple's relationship development along. Not to mention some chapters just felt unnecessary, especially the side stories regarding the second male lead. But that might be my biased view talking.

I'm the translator for this novel, so I feel obligated to be a fan. :) One of the big things that drew me to this novel was its wit and humor. Every character is snarky, and I enjoy how they banter and roast each other and are occasionally petty in hilarious ways.

The romance is quite straightforward (frankly the couple is less divorced and more huffily separated), but honestly, I like the second male lead better. The ML's main form of expression is an eyebrow raise, and I must have made... more>> up fifteen hundred synonyms for that by now.

Downsides: Chestnut likes to write quirky characters, and these ones are........ quirky. It's also not exactly deep. I translated this novel at a time when my Chinese was not yet good enough for anything beyond light, modern-day romance. Come expecting to turn your brain off for a bit, not the next great work of literature. <<less

I dropped this.

I'm giving this 3 stars because the novel was a bit... impractical. Don't get me wrong, the novel was well written and cute. But for me, the main couple seemed to have impulsively divorced without thinking things through. Everyone in the novel seemed to take their divorce a little too lightly. This is because after their divorce, THEY STILL ACT MARRIED and possessive over each other. He doesn't let other men approach by still calling her his wife. To me, this isn't cute at all. They still... more>> call eachother cute nicknames and she never takes down their wedding photos, which I found very weird.

Spoiler

The way she thinks also irritates me. She clearly still loves him but decided to divorce him still?
If she still loves him why is she leading on another guy? The second male lead confessed many times but she never rejected him, despite harboring feelings for a different man.

When I found out he divorced with the intention of remarrying I was so confused and wondering where the logic behind his reasonings were. Like isn't he supposed to be a genius mathematician??! The lack of communication and logic in this novel was truly surreal

I read it twice already and am about to read it a third. I saw some reviews that some people felt that it was cliche and it's unrealistic. Maybe... buttttttttt I read books to escape reality lol. I'm not looking for realistic. I just want my fluff and happiness with no angst or real third party or major dispute. This book's got a couple that didn't really understand each other divorce each other and then slowly fall back in love. I like it

Let me get this out of the way first. I firmly believe that there's three carnal mistake that every author will fall into.

  1. Love triangle cliche and Dragging out love triangle for 1/2 of the work
  2. siscon/brocon cliche
  3. osananajimi troupe
and sadly, this time; Chesnut won the grand prize for getting the first and second carnal mistake.

Spoiler

I will forever, and ever and ever drag out, scream and lash out on love triangle cliche for it is the pinnacle of laziness, the pinnacle of the most bullshitry, the pinnacle of one of the most painstakingly devious template that, someone I loved his/her previous work were to be do this. I felt so frustrated and at the same time, exhausted that, I felt like everything I read from ch.01 to the end have no point because, it is written in a way, that even if hell and heaven were to switched out, the author's logical ending will never change. Even if the MC were to be one of the most disgusting, ridiculously below the standards of homeless people, even if he's lifespan will end after the first ch., even if MC's the reincarnation of Redo of a Healer MC and 10x worse, heroine will still fall inlove with him? Why, because it is the will of the author for it to happen... I consider this work, the most prized tragedy of the century for not, because it ended in a way that the characters were to fall in the most melodramatic way, but because the work ended the way it's suppose to end. This I propose, for it is merely one of my own firm beliefs, like all authors inject the belief of "purity" that one ought to only have s*x with wed to her man, that the word, "divorce" is not the beginning of another story but the end of the previous story and will never have a follow up. But well, I guess Chestnut doesnt believe this... I feel so exhausted reading the series not because, of I liked it... It's because I know.... I f*ckING KNOW that when the 2nd male lead was introduced, I just know I'm wasting time reading how he'll court heroine because... I KNOW... I f*ckING KNOW... I HAVE f*ckING READ THOUSANDS OF f*ckING THOUNSAND OF f*ckING THOUSANDS love triangle cliche that has implanted such derogatory meaning to one's written work solely because it does nothing... I HAVE READ, 25 chapters of a development that will never progress simply because, it's the 2nd male lead. I have hated this solely because, it drags out the good of the 2nd male lead and highlights the bad of the main lead, and still..... f*ckING STILL.... In that f*cking most crucial point, Chestnut just has to exhibit this author-privilage card and let MC win. I will forever and ever believe that, in that 25 ch of 2nd male lead's courting heroine, will be the highlight of the tragedy and the highlight of why, love triangle cliche are succumbs to highlight and derive "character progression" in one of the most lazily way as possible. I will propose this in this scenario:

"scenarios" plays drastic role to emphasize and draw out character flaws and richly highlight such flaw. I will forever and ever, ALLOW such manipulative writing over love-triangle cliche for the former invoke and highly realism to the highest form of literary fanaticism, than the latter. The latter, will forever highly the polar opposite, to the point that you will puke blood and such manipulation, will gain point solely for the MC... Why? Because 2nd male leader NEVER... WILL NEVER f*ckING WIN in love triangle cliche. Prove me wrong. f*cking do it. There will never be an instance that, love triangle cliche highlights the "flaws" within with such purity simply because, you'll be forever drawn within the polar opposite that it is so f*cking brainless... BRAINLESS to even choose the one that will never win.... I mean.... why bother? It's such a cliche that once it pops out, you can pretty much skip the whole thing.

The heroine is, umm how do I put it.... Blank slate every single chapter. It's like she doesnt learn. I dont know, or prolly will never understand how heroine can think in this perspective.... And the point that, she; for some reason fell inlove with the MC is just wow.... I have nothing against s*x when your intoxicated nor to use this... so I guess, it's just one of those scenarios that Chestnut purposely manipulated so there's a beginning... Also... ummmm when she got pregnant, I ummm, well.... I guess it does happen.... so I'm still irk that, from ch.1-25/30 heroine is like f*cking fagging over 2nd main lead then f*cking, out of nowhere, she started to wanting to suck main lead's d*ck because of that robbery thing... I mean sure...

When the main lead is courting heroine is supposedly the highlight of the series but to tell you the truth, I felt like it's meaningless and obnoxious to even like such fluff. I felt so exhausted, so miserably drained that no fluff in this WN did ever invigorated life into me. I felt like the pacing of the series was done in a way, that is similar to "She Become Sweet and Cuddly" WN but different in a way that how the romance was enriched and flourished was done, via love-triangle whereas, "She Became Sweet and Cuddly" was used to such scenarios plottedly to allow for the MC and heroine to flourish their relationship... I felt so fake, or prolly out of touch that, how they built up their relationship, from being a couple, to being married (again because MC courted her) was deviously pathetically shallow, as if love in every word I read is just not there. It's like watching a romance movie and it's 5x speed. Do I blame MC's lack of focal characteristic? Prolly? Should I blame the love triangle in the first 30 chs? Prolly?

[collapse]

I will forever feel indebt to the TLer completing such a garbage. I do hope you do more. Your passion and the quality of work is something I will forever... and ever will look up to. <<less

A really fresh story from the author about a couple divorcing after their year of marriage.

Spoiler

With their marriage done hastily, they did not have the time to know each more and communicate properly before marriage resulting to their divorce. Apparently, the two leads aren't really over each other and their time after divorce became somewhat like a cooling period, getting to know each other period and courting period which they did not experience before marriage.

Overall, it is a sweet and cute love story that will tickle your hearts.

P.S. The ML endearment to the FL is so cute!! <<less

Update: Dropped at C26, its worse than I imagined.

Original:
I've got the second ML syndrome on this, his caring pays attention and TALKS. The ML isnt even a Ice Block his a blood Rock without emotions even in the Virtual class he only types ":) " When they where married he gave her math questions when she was bored and he was so busy with his math things... the f*ck.

If he loves Math so much he should have gone for the second FL, high IQ Girl turned actress. There... more>> is basically no compatibility between ML and FL. I hope this changes when I read more but seeing that I'm almost thru half the novel im not expecting anything from the ML, somehow they will get together again just because. It's sad because FL with 2th ML and 2 FL with ML would have been a more interesting story, showing the errors of getting married to soon out of a mistake and finding a true Partner for Life.

Who wants a ranit block of a husband, oh he looks good (yay) his smart (yay) but emotionally distanced a year without romance for a girl in her 20's sounds like real fun.

(no courting, no BF stage - from a drunken night together to married in a eyebat...) <<less

Firstly they get married because FL was influenced by the alcohol and then slept with the ML who basically had no sense of control. Then they get married with a sense of responsibility and then they get divorced well FL gave the idea to divorce him when clearly its obvious how she misses him? why divorce? It's like the author decided for them a period of broken relationship before the story was started to show, prologue. Awful cliche taste with the * night standon alcohol then ***......

And ML before didn't believe in love at first sight but after she meets FL ofcccc

Just like Tong Nian FL just the opposite.

An extremely cute story where the story starts with the protagonists divorce but it still keeps you interested. The translator is also awesome so I recommend giving it a try. Even though I am only in chapter 3, I have great expectations for this story.

It’s a cliche, fluff, whatever story. Indescribably beautiful woman with an unimaginably handsome man who dotes on her. Same old same old. I guess the “twist” is that they get divorced right at the start, but there is no doubt they still love each other and will end up together inevitably.

How the start of this remarriage is triggered is of course the C-Novel favorite- man has s*x with his drunk love interest. She was drunk and he was stone cold sober but of course *she* kissed him so how could he not take advantage?? It’s not like he’s a man with self control and not a mindless beast... oh wait. And then of course she gets pregnant and they’re on their way to getting remarried and starting their perfect lovey dovey life.

This is an OK book. Not too exciting, not too boring, not too sweet. The MC and ML got married after a night of happiness, didn't really know each other, didn't have any experience dating and being with other people, so they ended up getting divorces. However, the ML meant for the divorce to take the pressure off them and for him to court the FMC.

Their interactions are interesting, and I do like the sassy FL and her answers. I especially like when someone is trying to be sarcastic to... more>> either of them and their reactions to it. The FL has a golden tongue and the MC just leaves people wondering if they're still on planet Earth...

The only two aspects of the novel I don't like are the ML interacting with a woman who obviously has feelings for him and the author choosing for the couple to get back together (something that would've happened anyway) by making the couple have a child.

The ML seems used to being admired and attracting all the girls and women. From the discussion between the FL and her cousin at the beginning, when the FL and ML first see each other, it seems the ML is aware the invitations from random students are more than just a friendly invitation to hang out and always turns them down. However after the divorce, when meeting a colleague he used to go to uni with, the ML agrees to go out to dinner to her house (fair enough, she did lie she contacted their other colleagues as well). After he finds out he has been lied to, even after seeing the obvious romantic set up, he still sits down and has dinner with said woman. Albeit their dinner was very quiet. But still.

The author tried to hint that his education made him unable to be too rude to a lady. But turning down a romantic dinner from someone you're not interested in isn't rude. If everyone agrees to every dinner invitation just so they don't appear rude, relationships will really be a complete mess.

Then, towards the end of the novel, as the FL and ML get along and slowly get to know each other more, the FL finds out their accidental unprotected hook up from when she got drunk and initiated their intimacy led to her pregnancy. Whilst I don't mind the whole pregnancy aspect, I mind its timing. There were obviously feelings between the two, they just needed a more free environment to get to know each other, without the pressure of marriage pressing on them. They would have definitely ended up getting back together. And it would have been more interesting to read about them slowly getting along. But, unexpectedly, the FL ended up pregnant and they had to get remarried. As the FL mentioned, she hadn't even had enough time to enjoy the ML courting her.

I do like the part where the ML joins her online painting classes. And his reason of wanting to get to know her better through these lessons and through learning to paint himself. It was a very nice gesture.

People are actually extremely selfish (it's not necessarily a bad thing as long as your selfishness doesn't come at the cost of someone else). To try and get to know someone else and try and see the world through their eyes, through their perspective, is a very difficult thing to do. Understanding others' views and likes and dislikes, their personality and thoughts, is a very tough job and not a lot of people would be willing to do so. However, this aspect is very important in a relationship, especially something as intimate as cohabitation or marriage. You can't share your space with someone in peace and happiness if the two people can't see eye to eye, can't understand each other or communicate. So the ML gets a few points for his action.

All in all, as I already mentioned, the novel is an interesting read. It's got its funny parts, sweet ones, a tiny bit of heart break (especially seeing the second ML, such an awesome man, being rejected), and quirky conversations. It's an enjoyable read. <<less

Because I like the author and it did hook me at the start, I’ll give it a 4 :)) Although, tbh, the ML is too aloof and cold... the 2nd ML shined more than him and seemed to be more compatible w/ the FL.. ^.^ For me, he pales in comparison to other Chesnut ML’s..

If you’re looking for a quick short read, this is for you. But you shouldn’t think too rationally or else it will really destroy the writing this one offers haha..

This novel is really light hearted and cute. I really adore it. Some people said that the way they divorced and acted after that is unrealistic. But I don't 100% agree with that. They were a bit unrealistic but it's not like the way they got married was realistic too. They divorced because they couldn't stay like that anymore and ML never even thought about letting go in the first place. The only reason he agreed was to give FL some personal space and time to think it over. Though... more>> I too think it's a bit over the top but tbh I'm not sure I won't do the same if I were her. I dropped it because I can't stand the FL and how she never takes consideration of others feeling. If she doesn't like someone she should have said it inside of taking advantage of them. I don't know how ML suddenly fall in love with her when she is always insulting him and his hobbies.

Rated this initially as 4 but added another star.

Like a lot of main characters in a modern world setting focusing on realistic romance, our main characters also have huge flows and toxic sides that would make us, the readers, not really like them. This is why I initially rate it as 4, but after a lot of consideration, I realize that this isn't about two perfect people falling in love but a rash MC and and an ML who doesn't do much cuddling.

With that personality, it was obvious that if... more>> they didn't do anything they would break up. This could have probably easily been solve had ML learn how to back down and cuddle/talk with MC to stop her rash thinking but ML isn't like that so they went on the hard route: divorcing to allow MC to think and grow.

This isn't about a strong independent woman meets a capable man, it's about two lovers who really love each other just that their personalities as of the beginning of the story isn't compatible. This is also why the low key s*xual abuse that led to their remarriage (drunk sex), wasn't that big deal as the two people like each other. At most the MC would get mad but at that point we can see it was not a ground breaking enough to make her stop loving him. <<less
