These ruins, known as the Old World, were danger zones where beasts roam; buildings crumble, and other humans hunt their own…

Though Akira had expected to face death countless times there, he had never expected to meet a naked woman there.

Standing exposed with her curvaceous curves and bosom out for all to admire, Alpha, the breathtaking beauty stood there, looking back at him.

It's pretty good, the story is about a post apocalyptic world with people trying to survive and rediscovered old technology from the remains of Older Civilization.

Firstly, the main character, Akira is described as a street rat that struggle to survive that so happended to find a advance AI that offer help in exchange for Akira to follow EVERYTHING she said. Since he just trying to survive he's very cold and calculated (except when it comes to 3 women at that point he straight up act like an Isekai highschool protagonist)... more>> and since the AI is manipulated his mind so he pretty much is just a killing machine. Everytime there's a conversation between Akira and the A.I it's all comes down to how Sexy the A.I projected image is or another GIANT info dumps.

Characters, there aren't alot of them, it's been 90 chapters and Akira interactions with other characters are just 3 group of character which he cycle through which include: The weapon shop lady, 2 Female hunters that he helped and helped him, a young girl who he helped to form a gang which are boring af to read through. The weapon shop lady is just a shop with expo dumps for his next mission, the 2 female hunters makes him goes from a cold blooded kill machine to an isekai protag which act like he's never spoken to a woman before but for some reason he interacts just fine with the Young girl who's super into him.

Tldr: Alot of expo dumps, shitty interaction between characters, Sheryl best girl. <<less

the main reason this light novel fails to be a good story that can stand up to other styles of stories is that it wants to be an anime, not a good story.

this novel is pretty good for a light novel but that doesn't say much. If you get past the horribly translated first 10 or so chapters you get a pretty-good-for-a-light-novel-i-guess story. Every chapter or so the author has to remind you how beautiful the girls are and how big their b**bs are and how they are so curvy... more>> and shit. The fight scenes are fun to read, and then, well, you just keep reading because of promises of epic loot or something. The premise is interesting and there are good sci fi elements in it but it is all kind of ruined since it is written towards an anime so like nothing is described very well and everything has cannons and machine guns on it or something. A lot of things are not really well thought out, like it sounds cool and interesting but its never really explained or its just a "oohhhh bwig mistoweee", so it just feels like the author is lazy or doesn't care. Also the author has clearly never shot a gun like I swear the MC must have Parkinson's if it's that hard to shoot a freaking gun with a scope and an iron man hud at a stationary object.

the writing of the protagonist is meh. There are way worse out there with absolutely no personality but its kind of uninteresting. Sometimes he's a cold-blooded killer and sometimes he's a small child of an unspecified age that doesn't know anything? For some reason the author really really really really avoids talking about exact age as much as possible. Protagonist? We don't know what he looks like other than he's a weak-looking small child. <<less

Despite the score, I quite enjoyed the story. It has a strong start due to the premise, with the early world building and characters carrying it forwards. However, on later chapters I entirely skipped some action sequences because they added nothing meaningful. Some others, on the contrary, were truly interesting. That in itself was not the reason for my disappointment.

I've seen a lot of people rage over Katsuya and his harem, but in my opinion he was a very well built character, although only thoroughly explored in two situations ... more>>

the pickpocket girl's death and his own death

[collapse]
.

You can quickly catch on to the fact Katsuya is the average Japanese novel MC, his entire life revolves around being a good guy with a sense of justice, but no awareness of the opposite s*x, although his strange charm is constantly questioned by characters, showing that he's not normal (in turn making a jab at how shallow and unrealistic they feel). Regardless, in Rebuild World, this kind of character is impossible to sustain, as we can see that he produces a lot of death among teammates. For how much hate he gets, Katsuya and his harem are the perfect foil for Akira and his own harem, showcasing how important it is to prioritize your own life, survival and make rational decisions in this world, and how having romantic interests not basing their lives around MC make the time spent with them more valuable. However
Spoiler

after Katsuya's death, Akira's irrational decisions, without his idiotic rival to compare, become jarring to look at

[collapse]

So we have characters like Sheryl, Shizuka, Alpha and many more, with real motivations for sticking close to Akira and doing things according to their established personas, without forgetting themselves or their objectives. Even characters like Nelia, who only resurface very late, keep their charm due to that.

The interesting action scenes have a few things in common: you don't know how they will develop, you care about the characters involved, you enjoy the process.

For the first: Alpha's support can be interrupted by jamming, battles have a motive behind them (and will stop if they're not worth it anymore), enemies are intelligent, extreme wounds and maybe death are supported. On the flip side, some exploration is done solo with Alpha, those sequences will be boring because you're 100% sure Akira will be fine and because of all their mostly pointless chatting.

For the second: there is actually no consequence for Akira if any character dies at any given time, and even less so if they are severely injured. They will impact his life a little, emotionally in special, but that's it. It creates a situation where characters you care about may actually die or suffer greatly, so you can't keep your eyes away. With that being said, Akira's character development makes it increasingly obvious that he will be able to protect those people, which diminishes tension.

For the third: battle strategies are positional rather than tactical, which means each movement counts to the end result, whereas mind-games and pre-determined plans are not as valuable. However, it also means that straightforward fights are quite boring.

Now let's talk about the bad that makes it so bad:

Akira and Alpha: Akira's character development is nothing short of disappointing. It can be explained that he will fight difficult odds to save his recognized allies, but it is infuriating and s*upid that he will fight an enemy to protect his pride. That's not how getting over your inferiority complex works. There was also an event that completely broke his character:
Spoiler

after killing the pickpocket, he is called to deal with her best friend. By all means he would've killed her, but chose to take her to another city because he thought he was strong enough to ignore her threat (basically zero), which was an accomplishment. Okay, fair enough. But then she points her gun at him and shoots him. He dodges, still doesn't kill her, fully knowing she may come for his life in the future. This goes against everything the characters stands for.

[collapse]

Then there's Alpha. The way the author uses her as a companion for Akira during fights is very annoying. At first, they will talk about meaningful subjects, but as Akira grows accustomed to having her beside him, he becomes increasingly dependent on her (which was also partly her effort), but, disgracefully enough, stubborn and spoiled. He will blatantly disregard his safety and the success of the assignment many times to pursue an idiotic thing like his "pride"
Spoiler

even going as far as buying war against a huge and powerful company because of something s*upid, with no upside to it, none, zero, nada. Even when he bought war against a gang, it was at least for 2 reasons: kill the pickpocket and save Sheryl. But here there was no reason

[collapse]
and he will constantly complain and whine to Alpha in the middle of combat. This is very cringe and quite abnormal.

World-building: it becomes dull. It picks up some steam after he gets rank 50, but mostly it's uninteresting and focusing on politics. I don't know about others, but I found the underlying plot with Yanagisawa, the nationalists, companies, Alpha and old world A.I.s very underwhelming. It is basically 300 chapters of saying nothing. We can sum it up by the following: Akira does some stuff with FLs, goes ham on a mission, almost dies and loses all equipment, buys better equipment because he's now richer, rinse and repeat. At that point you're only reading because you're invested in side characters and not Akira (and they get some actual development, like Togami and Carol).

Yanagisawa: probably the least interesting character to be introduced. For one, he is almost entirely disconnected from Akira and the ongoing plot until the 260s, and there's the fact he is always associated with the shadow plot we know nothing about. He's also a prick that smiles obnoxiously when it's quite obvious he doesn't mean it, then fake being serious after "losing" patience.

There are other s*upid villains like Tiol and Airi after some events, they're completely boring and in some cases immersion breaking.

Summing up those points make the story lose a lot of its luster. <<less

starting out good but later at alna arc this went downhill fast

Spoiler

when akira went to save sheryl and kill alna at the ezont family estate, katsuya comes from behind and tries to kill akira repeatedly to protect alna and akira lets him live and yet akira goes full ret*rd for alna who only stole 100k aurum makes me wonder why the author went full ret*rd and yet that wasnt enough, akira had to just go back into the estate after saving sheryl (oh yeah the ezont family had countless power suites and tanks and akira didnt even have alpha support because new aug suit needed 1 day b4 she can rewrite the software)

with all that bs plot even alpha repeated warnings he still got no support who already used most of his ammo bye cash just to kill alna.

For now, I'll give it a 4 star rating. For those who want it short, I recommend you to read this. For those who want an in-depth explanation, keep reading.

I really like what the author is doing here. The MC is not too overpowered, and though he depends on Alpha a bit too much, he also has to go through a lot of sh*t even when he was weak during the story, so makes sense. The harem (or a least candidates) makes a bit of sense, and at least he's... more>> not getting them by just throwing a rock. Overall, the story is enjoyable to read, and characters and somewhat fun.

The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there are some questions I want answered.
    • What are relics exactly, and what do they do to make them so valuable? From what I've seen, the author mentions relics, and collecting old world relics, and I understand that they're from the old world, but what do they do exactly?
    • Speaking about Alpha, I don't know about the rest of you, but she's very suspicious to me. I know, she's probably going to be main waifu or something, but the fact that all the term and conditions to her would take centuries to read is somewhat worrying, and that fact that they've been 498 people before the MC (not sure about the exact number, but its in the late 490s) who've worked with Alpha, and all of them failed discover this "ruin" is a blatant red flag.. I was somewhat loosening up to her as I was reading (though still suspect of her), and ended up finding this moment (during the first encounter with the maid hologram thingy) when the MC did not give Alpha permission to control his body, but she still did it. If you read a few chapters ago (when she got the ability), the MC said that she can't control his body without his permission, and so that made Alpha seem really sus to me. Maybe it's just me, maybe she is really sus, I'll only know that by reading, so I'll update my comment later

When it comes to the Harem genres I'm selective, and Rebuild World is one of them. Full four stars!

A refreshing series when you got fed up with isekai LN out there. The world-building was so good that I could ignore the flaws in the character's building. This review was coming from a woman who picky when it comes to reading. A good read for me was where the world-building wasn't explained in a rush manner and a necessary amount of rest before the next arc also important.

Honestly, I didn't mind... more>> at all if the author wanted to take it slow, the potential mysteries about the old world ruins are endless. There was also another reason why I like this series, I'm glad that Akira is the male lead instead of a certain character. <<less

The action scenes are great but the characters felt shallow. Maybe they develop as the story progresses but I want instant gratification like an immature idiot I am.
This novel having a post-apocalyptic setting with no relief in sight makes me depressed, I have too much problems irl to be reading about others’ misfortune.

I'm not gonna say much but I do recommend this novel to anyone that likes a cyberpunk/mad max type of story. The only problem this novel has is the amount of fluff writing. There's a lot of unnecessary paragraphs (I mean ALOT) describing every single detail possible. But if you're looking for a great (yes the novel is great) this is it. And the MC is like 12-14 so bare with him. He is a little twisted.

Its worth the read,

Its more or less a "Toaru" type of novel, you either despise it or you absolutely love it, you really need to read it carefully to fully understand the the cause and effect of the story and character development. The world building is more akin to "One Piece" and "Honzuki" as it seems like the city that the story takes place is just a smaller part of the bigger world, and with the mystery surrounding it, it would mostly be uncover in the later part of... more>> the story eventhough hints and bits are revealed throughout the story.

Protaganist - Akira

Spoiler

MC, Akira is s*upid, but not in a bad way, and he definetely knows that, he doesn't have much knowledge as even the common knowledge feels alienated for him, you can see this explained by his choice of clothing that is always the same most of the time even on different occasions and the way he evaluates enjoyment and entertainment differ from his surrounding, He is not dense though, it's just that he is afraid, this is why most of his decision making is solely based on that emotion and it is main reason for his final battle with Katsuya which is "Trust". And it is mostly why you feel like theres no character development for Akira, since his only Trust and Loyalty is dedicated to Alpha for the duration of his mission.

[collapse]

Antoganist - Katsuya

Spoiler

Katsuya, definetely the most hated character in the series currently, but after rereading the story, I kinda feel pity for him, he is not the generic overpowered hero, but rather more of a normal guy with decent talent, it is normal of having the desire to help people but his old world connector messed with him so much, that due to the emotions of his surrounding of wanting to be saved by him, and hailed him as a hero, its no wonder he fell into depression so many times, just to be saved by sheryl and get a mental breakdown again after getting ntred by Akira.

I can't do a review but what I can say is that this novel is going to be one of my top favorite lists for the story, character development, and action scenes.
I love how the theme of science apocalyptic world is so depth in it. It's refreshing to see a novel like this of the many novels I've read.

It had potential, especially compared to so many other wn's, oh it had a lot of potential.

At first you get drawn in by the world building, an interesting premise, imaginative battle scenes and hope for a good story and character development.

But the most important part of stories are the characters, and the further I got in the story the more my disappointment grew.

Akiras (MC) rival is a one dimensional hero type that doesn't even have a personality besides being the hero and saving any stray (girl) that he comes across.... more>> As for Akira himself, there is just a growing feeling of dissonance. The way he acts and the things he does start to make less sense. From being a character with potential, some tragedy and being at least a little bit street smart, and using everything to stay alive, he goes to an arrogant, one-dimensional (ok, maybe two) puppet.

I'm not sure what the author was thinking, but whatever it was it leaves me feeling disappointed. I'd have loved to continue reading it but at this point it'll join the graveyard of my "dropped" webnovels. <<less

I like this novel, but it's slowly wearing on me.

The biggest problem is the main character. It was fun watching him grow from a naive slum kid into a more social, more confident person in the early chapters... but then he just kinda dead stopped midway through. He stays somewhat anti-social, somewhat-naive, and somewhat-insecure from that point on. Heck, his anti-social stuff starts to feel sociopathic. He starts the vague outline of relationships with people (mostly women, go figure) but then they just stagnate there due to his lack of... more>> growth.

And then, on the opposite side, you have Alpha, who starts as a helpful mentor but in later chapters devolves into a far less likeable character, conspiring against the main character in ways that seem reminiscent of child grooming and abusive relationships (holding debts over his head, putting him in situations and then taking credit for getting him out, trying to drive him away from his friends, trying to control his actions). I'm sure the intent is to build up to a climactic emotional moment where this all comes to a peak, but... we're talking over a hundred chapters where Alpha has been this kinda pseudo-antagonist and the MC is still following her blindly, with no sign of it ever ending.

Then you have the never concluding plot threads. It's starting to feel like a Xianxia TBH. Someone antagonizes MC, MC beats them, they somehow miraculously escape death, they get a helper, MC kills the original person, helper antagonizes MC, MC beats them, they somehow miraculously escape death, they get a helper, etc.

That's not a joke, either. Often times it's worse than that. There was literally a part where a character antagonizes the MC, gets taught a lesson, and rather than learning from it, gets a helper that pits them against the MC again, gets taught another lesson, and then takes a reckless action that gets them almost killed, blames the MC, gets saved from death miraculously, gets in a fight with the MC, gets almost killed, gets saved from death miraculously, gets a helper, gets in a fight with the MC, gets almost killed, gets saved from death miraculously, gets a helper, gets in a fight with the MC, and then finally dies. The first helper dies, gets saved from death miraculously, picks up a helper of his own, fights the MC again, dies, gets saved from death miraculously, picks up a second helper of his own, and is currently looking to antagonize the MC again.

Between the lack of character development and the unending plot threads, I'm really starting to get drained by the novel.

But, on the other hand, the world is a really cool and unique take on the apocalypse, the action is entertaining, the characters impressively distinct (a pseudo harem where the girls actually have personalities?!), and the early development was very good. 5/5 first hundred chapters, 3/5 since, average 4/5, hopefully we get some conclusions soon. <<less

Truly an interesting novel, plot seems mysterious and fascinating, fights are not boring, MC have a little twisted way of thinking, but considering his childhood, it's okay, most definite flaw in my opinion is way of speaking between people, it's repetitive, awkward and plain. But overall it's good enough.

Good enough that I've lost brain cells MTLING it. The MC is twisted but not arrogant. He sees the world as enemies or allies. He will stop at nothing to kill his enemies, biding his time until he is strong enough and he will go out of his way to help those he really cares for.

The MC grows quite a bit. He understands that he cannot always rely on burrowed power and tries really hard to gain his skills... mean while he his advantage is slowly working against/manipulating the MC... more>> to make the MC more dependent on it. Good story, worth reading. <<less

MC not being a cringeworth shy guy with girls makes this half decent to me since im tired of the trope.

decent length chapters, rarely rambles to the point of getting boring.

i dont quite know how to review it, its mediocre in good ways. Give the first couple chapters a read and if you like then I dont think you'll get bored up to where I am atleast

edit; read ahead from 130 to 175, in all honesty I find the gang part of the story just mindnumbing to read since it feels like the side story hijacked the main story, cheryl is interesting enough but I just cant change my perception of it.

its great to see a story where strength is being gradually built and not 'and with this skill became unbeatable' but I just cant get away from how it feels like the MC is always being sidetracked rather than maiking progress <<less

sigh the skill and overall power of people in this novel can be augmented by some advance tech and mysterious stuff like instinct

skills like shooting for example, some people can be so accurate due to some high tech stuff or in terms of overall prowess, people can be augmented by technology and/or mysterious abilities

can't really tell whether he deserves stuff, whether it's ok cause others can have the technology or mysterious capabilities that can replicate his accomplishments

It's not bad, but not good either.

The premise is promising. This is never seen before Apocalypse novel. I am kinda surprised when the MC obtained his cheat. While it's not OP, it makes him stronger than anyone in certain situation.

Too bad the conversation and banter between characters feels raw and forced. It feels like they're not living being. The longer you read, the longer you feel their personality is amiss and something is off.

In the end, it caused by Author lack of writing skill that drag down the story. Though... more>> the interesting premise and unique Apocalypse save this novel from mediocrity.

I don't know about you, but I'm rooting for Yumina to drop Katsuya and fall in love with Akira. Imagine the frustration of Katsuya. And considering what I saw until cap 100, her passion for Katsuya is more inclined to just eros love. In fact, I'm on the team that is hoping to end in a harem.

In fact the work is wonderful. For those looking for action, development of history and personalities, then there it is. The work only lacks romance, but that's because the MC is still very... more>> young and immature, I'm sure it will still happen.
