A good-for-nothing, blockheaded rich young master was thrown into the military by his family to teach him a lesson. In this rural, lousy place where nothing was accessible, Young Master Bai called for help in vain, and was forced to accept his fate tearfully. Enduring tough training as well as the daily bruising of his pride was already torturous enough for him, so why did he have to meet a jinx that was always giving him trouble and always coveted his butt? This jinx looked decent and proper on the outside, but was filled with wickedness. Young Master Bai would never surrender to him!

The novel is a story about a weakling of a little willow who, through the military, was guided into becoming a valiant and heroic little poplar. Watch how Young Master Bai takes one step after another to grow into an acceptable soldier of the republic!!

Highly recommended!!! If you are on the fence deciding, trust me, you will not be disappointed. The plot, was intriguing. More than intriguing I should say, the flow was very smooth and stable. There was spicy smut as well, very explicit, but it was just icing on top. I mean there are novels which are good because they have smut. But in this novel, smut is only an extra thing you get. It is heavy on the emotional part.

The MC's character development was one of the best I have ever... more>> seen. He grew up from a good for nothing to a very fine young man. He transformed into a new person. He was amazing. The ML was also good. You can have many opinions about him, and he might not be the so so righteous guy you see in many novels, but well, that makes it more interesting. He got his karma for that in the novel itself. All in all, their story is one of the strongest bonds, I have ever read because they were there in the time period where it was kind of decided what they are gonna become. They witnessed their growth, mainly the ML saw the MC.
Spoiler

Although the ML took some time to be clear headed, after he confirmed his feelings he spared nothing and was chasing after the MC. Unlike in many novels where the MC get together being easily soft hearted, I loved how he tried to stop himself from going back to the ML. It was a torture for both of them, but I think that period was a time I enjoyed the most, reading.

You MUST read this. This book is worth your time!!! <<less

My Little Poplar is one of my favorite works by Shui Qian Cheng. This novel is light hearted and filled with comical struggles of BXY's experiences in the army's boot camp in sharp contrast to the angst and deception that characterizes many of SQC's popular novel. This novel is a spin-off of In Love with an Idiot and it follows the story of Jian Suiying's cousin, Bai Xinyu. Even though they're cousins, they're different in every way and they take totally opposite routes.

In My Little Poplar, BXY, starts off as a spoiled crybaby, but he is able to go through amazing character growth and slowly makes his way up from the bottom of his class during his time in the army. In contrast to the honest soldiers who accompanies BXY and the positivity energy of the army, JSY from In Love with an Idiot is surrounded by schemers and hostility as his peers are all eyeing JSY's CEO status. In fact, BXY was involved in one of these schemes that contributed to JSY's downfall (You'll have to read the other novel for details. This novel focuses on BXY's self reflection and it's one of the key factors that motivated him to improve himself and make up to JSY.)

Spoiler

Unlike BXY, who was pampered excessively by his mother, JSY relations with his family is estranged and there's a sick twist to regarding the death of his mother. Throughout the novel we slowly witness scheme after scheme hacking away at JSY's success as he falls to the bottom and loses everything.

BXY himself was used as a pawn and was rather ignorant of the consequences. When you realize just how much BXY's naive decisions hurt JSY, it makes sense as to why JSY was particularly cold and unsympathetic to the crying BXY as he was sent to the army.
[collapse]

The reunion scene between BXY and JSY is one of the most fascinating scenes in which BXY is at his best and JSY is at his worst. The interesting part is that this scene is depicted in both novels and we get to see the thoughts of their respective MCs as they take in the changes of the other person. Regarding BXY's rapid character growth, it's not that BXY suddenly developed an OP finger. Rather, it's that BXY never had the motivation and it's not until he started using his brain and putting effort into his goals that he realizes he can achieve anything he wants. There's a segment in the novel that tests the limits of BXY's mental and physical capacity to overcome the despair one might feel in a losing battle. (Idk if these military tests are legitimate in China since they're so extreme)

One of the most fascinating military test that he goes through is:

Spoiler

In one of the tests in military, BXY got locked up in total isolations for a whole month. (It's basically psychological torture by stripping BXY of any social interactions). He had zero contact with any living beings. No phone calls. No social media. Nothing

Considering BXY started off as a crybaby who whined to his parents about being sent to the military, it was impressive to see BXY being so resilient while his competitors goes insane and becomes self-destructive from the sheer loneliness.

Wow. I don't know the other got through this but it was already hard getting past chapter 5. It's fine if MC suffered because of his own attitude but the fact that ML harrassed him multiple times... and for what? Discipline? Maybe it's because I don't know military affairs but the way ML treated MC at the beginning was just horrible and to me, no amount of redemption through love or character development can ever repair that.

I didn't enjoy the ride, only the first chapters were funny.

I only read abuse, and abuse and abuse. And abuse.

It's not funny for me.

Maybe if I read less novels, I couldn't compare and I would appreciate it more.

Reading only to chapter 15 I won't rate it (it would be unfair even if I read 10% of the novel with the extras).

But I can't recommand it. If someone is hesitating, maybe wait until there are more chapters translated ?

The character growth is really really good. MC's character was spoiled since a child, so the character is bad. The author admit this, he/she made a thorough spoiled rich second generation personality for MC. It's quite annoying actually, but you can't help but want to read further. Want to watch MC's growth step by step. It took quite long for MC to change, reasonable since he's really a spoiled brat. But despite all these weaknesses, the author didn't forget to give MC his own strength.

Spoiler

The story also tells about MC's identity crisis. What he wants to do? How's his future? The MC tried to figure this out, it's not rare for him to choose the wrong choices. It was really realistic, like some of us who sometimes don't know what to do for living, then makes some wrong choices.

Spoiler

About ML and MC's relationship, at first I don't like it. ML likes to harass MC, sometimes I think it's too far. I also think that ML still looks down MC, sometimes. ML was one of the main factor in MC's character growth, MC wants to catch up with ML. ML was MC's goal, though he will never admit it.

[collapse]

The story is really good, I haven't finished it yet but I assure that you won't regret reading it.

Edit after finishing the story :

Spoiler

So I've just finished the story awhile ago. It's... an exhausting journey. It stirs your emotions, makes you feels sad then happy, angry. The ML was a bast*rd in the mid, a real bastard! But thankfully he redemp it later by chasing MC shamelessly.

[collapse]

What I want to point : Good plot. Amazing action. Good dog blood. Enough smexy moments! (Cut later though). Good character building. <<less

It's my first time writing a review and tbh I don't like the ML. He should know the consequences of his every action and I also don't think the ML deserve to be with the MC.

And it's quite annoying how he pester the MC after their break up and I don't think he deserve to be with MC, yeah MC can forgive him as he made a rational decision in the 2nd mission but from emotional perspective he already abandoned MC that night and it was over! He has to... more>> bear the consequences of his own actions but instead he doesn't let go. From my point of view if he hadn't pester MC after the break up MC would've gotten over him sooner or later.

ML already lost the trust which should be in a relationship and I don't like the fact that he's now trying to redemp it but not everything can be fixed with a single sorry or guilt or regret. He should understand that there's no medicine for regret.

Anyway I don't like the ML <<less

This one right here is a gem. I seriously don't get the low ratings!

This book made me feel all kinds of emotion. When I first started reading it, I thought it would just be a book describing MC's strugglings to adapt but boy was I wrong! The transformation of both characters is ah-mazing especially our MC Bai Xinyue. I felt like a mother hen watching her baby grow up into a responsible young man. Our ML was quite problematic at first tho. But as I said before they grew up,... more>> both of them, mended their ways, understood the mistakes they made and tried their best to correct them. MC also didn't take any sh*t from ML. He punished him the hardest way possible and those parts made cry buckets. Yeah I cried reading this. At first I thought it was gonna be all fluffy and cute but oh well!:) Tbh another reason why I loved this story so much is maybe because how much I relate to our MC. I too am a lazy bum who doesn't have any kind of achievements in life, wasting away my youth reading novels in bed all day lol. But seeing BXY finding his dream, becoming successful gave me endless satisfaction. So I would recommend this novel to everyone without any second thoughts! <<less

Very realistically written and some great character growth on part of both the MC and ML.

Spoiler

The novel is split into two parts/situations: The first half is MC going to the army and experiencing most of his growth as well as meeting all his friends/comrades, until he breaks it off with the ML and leaves, which starts the second portion where it's basically the ML groveling and chasing back the MC. Honestly I thought the first was more interesting with the action and whatnot, but the later half focused more on the romance. Beware though, they only get back together in the last few chapters. (Thankfully there were extras)

[collapse]

The author did a fantastic job in writing this, definitely had a lot more thought put behind this plot than other novels. The only issue (which wasn't too bad for me) was the translation quality, because sometimes the words were the EXACT opposite of what the meaning actually was.
For example, there was a sentence along the lines of: "He was shaken, and he replied calmly..", which doesn't make sense until you flip the first part into 'he wasn't shaken'.

There were also some pretty bad problems with the raw translation itself, since they messed up some of the meanings behind the original text, which means some parts are completely incomprehensible.
For example, during one of the MC and ML's sweeter moments, MC suddenly replied with a "I don't care about you", which seemed totally out of place, and looking at the conversation again I can tell (as someone fluent in chinese) that the original meaning was "I don't control you".

Anyways, not trying to flame the translator here, they did a great job with so much text to translate. Just a fair warning though to those who aren't as familiar with chinese.

Other than these minor issues, it really shouldn't stop you from reading it. There was actual good content here, so do try reading. <<less

Overall, a pleasant read. This author, 水千丞, maintains high quality throughout her novels.

To give some background, this novel, Xiao Baiyang, is part of her 188 series (188团) (188 is the height of the gong in all of the novels in the series). The 188 series follows a cookie-cutter structure in terms of plot and development:

Spoiler

1. MC and ML meet each other, go through some hiccups, but eventually start dating. The ML doesn't really treat MC as well as he should be.

2. ** Happens, and MC is upset at ML.

3. Even bigger ** happens, and MC wants to get away from ML.

4. ML grovels for forgiveness.

5. Happy ending!

[collapse]

Our MC is the paradigm of what character development is (and so is our ML, though not as apparent at first). Great supporting cast. Hilarious moments, sweet bits, and lots of epiphanies. If I had to name one thing that I liked best about this novel, it would be the main character's (Bai Xinyu's) revelations as he journeys through life in the military and realizes how toxic his past vices were.

Some info about the ML Yu Fengcheng:

Spoiler

Strong-willed dude, super thick skin, loves to pick on our MC. Kinda has daddy issues but we don't talk about that

[collapse]

The pacing varies quite a bit at times which threw me off. The first part of the story which takes place in the military is definitely a lot more well-structured, and because it is supposed to lay the foundations for the romantic affections that sprout between the main couple, I found it to be more enjoyable than the second half that takes place in regular society.

My verdict: pretty good read, especially if you enjoy the refreshing feeling of having the main character take revenge on the ML for all the wrong he's done to him in the beginning. <<less

This is my second most favorite novel by this author (next to Beloved Enemy). The MC's character growth is the best part and is very smooth. I love how, throughout his growth, he retains his coquettish and a bit of childish nature with which he wins over people even when he was an annoying crybaby. The ML is not as bad as the other ML's in the series, although he is a big time s*xual predator towards the MC and practically forces him into a relationship. However, he is also... more>> a big factor and influence and inspiration in the MC's growth.

I also want to point out the hypocrisy of Jian Sui Ying who plays a big role in this novel. He strongly opposes the protagonists' relationship, emphasizing that the MC is not a natural (born) gay and that the ML is too young and may change in a few years (the age difference is 3 years). However, in his own novel, he aggresively pursued Li Yu who was barely of age (JSY was in his mid 20s at the time) and was 2 years younger than BXY and a year older than YFC. Also, he never once pondered what LY's s*xual orientation might be while he was pursuing him.

Anyway, this is a very well-written novel. I MTL'ed it, but everything is quite easy to understand. The action scenes are good and the characters are very well-written too. <<less

Soo good! One of the best in the 188 series.

The best part of the novel is the military part. The author seems to have done quite a bit of research, because the setting, the army culture, the training, even down to the weapons they use stands out and feels realistic, even when a lot of it is probably made-up. Everything feels believable, even the insanely harsh tests that the recruits for the special forces undergo in order to train and prove that they're tough enough to join the... more>> team.

The plot: Slice of life military story with some gay romance + wife chasing in the crematorium trope. It's a 188 novel, so expect some dogblood, melodrama, lots of angst and heartbreak, MC and ML suffering.

What you can be certain will happen at some point:

Spoiler

The ML will chase/seduce the MC, the MC will fall madly in love, only for the ML to later break the MC's love and trust, leading to a breakup. The ML will quickly realize that the MC is the center of his world and will chase him to win him back at all cost. Something dramatic will happen, the ML will prove his love and the MC will eventually make up with him -> Happy end.

[collapse]

Before this, My Little Poplar is an amazing story of a young, spoiled brat who effs up so much that his family sends him to the toughest, most remote military training base to toughen him up. He's miserable for a time and completely useless, but gradually grows and changes to become an upstanding soldier. Along the way he forges friendships, finds new goals and values in life and falls in love.

The MC's character development is the best part of the story. His trials in the first chapters are funny, because he's such a spoiled idiot, but gradually he changes to the point where you want to root for him, and it's very satisfying to see him become a better person and also open up emotionally to the ML.

The MCs and their character growth are usually the best part of 188, and this book is no exception.

The ML is not a nice person in the first part of the story, but he does have a profound effect on the MC. As the MC's attraction to the ML grows, so does his wish to be able to catch up with him and stand tall beside him. The ML is a model soldier with a single goal in mind, and he becomes a huge source of inspiration for the MC.

While the MC's changes are shown clearly step by step and are so obvious that everyone in the story notice it, the ML also undergoes a more subtle, but profound development. He starts out as a bully and an unruly army brat, great at everything involving the military, but also cold and unfeeling. He won't allow anything or anyone to hold him back from reaching his goal. Yet he gets involved with the MC and witness him changing at lightening speed from a good-for-nothing crybaby rich kid to a strong, tough army recruit who wins himself a place in the army and the admiration of his peer through sheer determination and cultivating his talent. At first, the ML is just a hooligan who's physically attracted to the MC, but looks down on him for being lazy and weak. Gradually, he starts to develop feelings for the MC, although it's so subtle he doesn't even know it himself, and doesn't consider how serious it is before it's too late. The MC makes him compromise again and again, helping the MC at times when it would have made more sense not to.

Spoiler

The ML is the reason the MC succeeds in joining the special forces. Although a lot of the ways he helps him falls under general teamwork, there are times where he helps him persevere during the tests, like with the teargas test. He does this even though he says time and again that the MC isn't really suited for the special forces, and he's also concerned that the MC will get hurt. But helping the MC get into the team means that they can continue their relationship, which deep down is what the ML wants.

[collapse]

Like all MLs in the 188 universe, Yu Fengcheng is an idiot when it comes to feelings, which becomes his downfall. I found the reason for the breakup well-developed, but I think the MC makes a bigger deal out of it than what's logical.

Yu Fengcheng's mistakes:

Spoiler

Not acknowledging Xinyu's growth or respecting his wishes and agency. He helps Xinyu during the testing, but at the time where it really matters, he leaves Xinyu behind to continue on his own. Obviously he does this not just because he wants to join the special forces no matter what, but because he doesn't want Xinyu to go through something that would endanger his life - he wants Xinyu to be safe. But contrast his behavior with Chen Jing's. While Fengcheng gets up, turns his back on Xinyu and refuses to acknowledge that like himself, Xinyu hasn't given up and will make an effort to continue, Chen Jing supports Xinyu physically and emotionally. Chen Jing works with others and doesn't put his own needs above the needs of others, Fengcheng is inherently selfish.

Fengcheng makes it clear that he pretty much worships his uncle, but he belittles Xinyu when he talks about how much he admires his cousin, Jian Suiying.

When Xinyu gets jealous and confronts him about his feelings for Huo Qiao, he also asks Fengcheng if he is serious about their relationship. At this point they have been through so much together and are facing an extremely dangerous mission. When Fengcheng neither denies that he has romantic feelings for his own uncle, nor affirms that he loves the MC, he fails Xinyu big time. Even though it's obvious to the reader that he loves Xinyu, his behavior up to this point has always been selfish. He monopolizes the MC again and again, is driven by jealousy, but he doesn't give the MC the respect and love that Xinyu needs. No wonder Xinyu loses faith in him.

[collapse]

I think if it weren't for the ML being repeatedly selfish from day 1, the MC wouldn't have reacted so dramatically after the climax of the story happens.

Spoiler

The thing is, Xinyu knows that logically, Fengcheng should rescue Huo Qiao. Xinyu is in less danger, Fengcheng is the one in the team who at the time is best suited to rescue HQ. Xinyu knows that logically, he can't blame the ML. HQ is after all his close family member and also a valuable soldier in the special forces, and also their team leader. His life is the most valuable and the danger for HQ is bigger.

If the ML had made sure to confirm that he was serious about the MC before the mission, Xinyu would have been more likely to forgive him sooner. Furthermore, if the ML had been better at separating emotions from hard facts when they talked in the hospital after the mission, he could also have helped the MC forgive him. Fengcheng should have acknowledged that even though he loves Xinyu, the situation required him to try to save HQ and this was his duty as a soldier. Instead he just talks about how Xinyu isn't suited for the special forces and how he feels guilty because Xinyu got hurt for his sake - when he should have respected that Xinyu did his duty as a fellow soldier and would have done the same for one of the others. It's obvious that the ML isn't more suited for the special forces than the MC, because he's ruled too much by his emotions. He comes off as not respecting the MC because he's too scared that the MC will get hurt.

Xinyu resents him only because he believes that Fengcheng looks down on him, doesn't take him seriously as a lover or soldier and that he cares more about his uncle than his lover.

[collapse]

When the ML afterwards proves again and again that the MC is the most important thing in his life, the MC logically should have given in sooner.

The ML isn't really that scummy, unlike a lot of the other 188 MLs. He's an idiot when it comes to feelings though.

However, there is noncon/dubcon:

Spoiler

While some might call it dubcon, I would call the first time the CP have s*x for r*pe. No gonna lie, it gets kind of uncomfortable. I don't mind noncon in a story if it serves a purpose, and usually it does in SQC's books, but in this one it could easily have been changed into a milder dubcon. The ML basically raping the MC doesn't serve any real purpose and it's swept under the rug afterwards. Same as in In Love With An Idiot.

To me it's a minor thing and the rest of the story is good enough to make up for it, but it did annoy me.

[collapse]

The side characters are really good. I love the kind Chen Jing, the mild (but weird) Huo Qiao, sweet Dongyuan and the MC's gruff mentor. Jian Suiying and Lu Yi from In Love with An Idiot make an appearance several times, and it's funny how it's obvious (as Xinyu says) that Lu Yi is basically the only one who can handle Suiying's bad temper.

The ML's family is so cool. They have the best attitude:

Spoiler

From Huo Qiao being all "so my nephew has a weird crush on me, but it's cool, he's young and s*upid about feelings, thank God he fell in love with his fellow soldier", to Fengcheng's dad being all "My son is dumb and I'm just going to reveal in front of his friends the embarrassing things he does because he's in love", to his mom sneakily befriending Xinyu's mom to make a good impression. And they're all just super relieved that Fengcheng found a nice boy who can make him stay out of trouble and do subtly try to play matchmakers for him.

[collapse]

Seriously, if Yuan Yang, Shao Qun, Song Juhan and Yan Mingxiu's parents had been this cool, it would have saved the family a lot of trouble. Especially in the case of Yuan Yang and his family. Why not just be grateful that a decent, reliable person actually wants your stinky kid?

Anyway, this is a really good novel where the dogblood is a bit toned down and there's a lot of realism and character development. Plus sexy gay army romance, so what's not to like;-) <<less

I've finished the novel today. I am feeling a lot of things, satisfaction overpowers them all. At first I didn't like this novel. I only stayed for the MC (Bai Xinyu) and his progress in the military. I also completely adored some side characters. I hated the ML and wished that the MC doesn't have a love interest. But the MC can't be who he is without the help of the ML, Yu Fengcheng was a big part in the MC's character transformation. Also, on their proposal my heart just... more>> swells, I even teared up. I'm happy for them.

Spoiler

I like that their marriage proposal isn't very grand. Its simple and emotional. One of my favorite parts.

also Feng Dongyuan and Wei Yima doesn't have a book?!!!!!! They're super freaking cute~~

I really love the MC. I think he's one of my favorites.

I like that the ending of the novel completely wraps it up into a perfect pie. I think I won't be able to move on from this novel so soon. I feel like I've lived a life and now that I've finished I don't know what to do. Could I ever find another novel similar to this?

Wow, this novel was such pleasant surprise! Really a little gem.

Don't let the cover or the military world deter you to read this novel. I avoided this novel because it didn't sounded appealing at all. I was sooo wrong! I totally binged it.

... more>> Why you should read?

1. Great writing style!! Scenes totally came alive. You can tell this is an experienced author and a mature one. Not the wooden or staccato kind of writing style. Characters were so real!! Emotions were sooo good. Loved the angst too.

2. SUPERB character development. Especially MC but also ML.

MC was a total waste of a rich 2nd generation, but becomes an elite soldier. He is such a loveable character!! Funny, whiny, yet strong, kind and generous. His character was so well written and so real.

ML came across as a total jerk and mol*ster (there is a reason why he bullied MC from the start, they also knew eachother from before but MC forgot). I almost dropped the novel because of agressive ML, but man... I totally LOVED him in the end!!!! He is soooo persistent, strong, passionate and s*xual as a person, and also when he had decided on MC as his one and only love. He is sooooo thick skinned, goal oriented, shameless. The way he was written, totally rebellious as a kid, his strengt, including his appearance... made me drooling! ML's family is super rich and powerful. They are the best!

3. SUPERB side characters!!!! Each of them are great! And there were many side characters. Author doesn't need to rely on face slapping or dogblood. This is a real, fleshed out, mature novel.

4. All the action scenes and trainings were very well written and exciting! Author knows how to make scenes alive. I could clearly imagine it my head. I was totally immersed, whilst I thought I would just skim these chapters. But it was like watching an action movie, so good.

5. SMUT is really good! Both ML and MC were so well written and attractive. Two super strong men... The s*x scenes, especially in the end when they were back together, were very very HOT!!! Because you feel their love and they are sooo h**ny for eachother. They are so much in love with eachother. Their passion, their love and energy is just off the charts! This couple makes you totally envious.

This author's writing is just very good! I've become a big fan :). <<less

The reason they both get together is the same. F*ck buddies. Both MLs have someone important in their hearts, much important than the MC, and the reason for their break-up is exactly that when the MC realized it, they both refuse to be treated as second option aka substitute.

What I find extra ridiculous in this was that the ML was so adamant of 'bending' the MC when he never had the intention to make it serious 'at first'. Just imagine if he didn't fall in love but poor guy became bent just for him. Yep, a total scumbag.

[collapse]

My only comfort in reading this is the development of the MC. He grow up a lot from being an annoying sissy to a capable man despite having mediocre skills. I think it's really refreshing since it's rare to encounter an average MCs in danmei.

Okay to read but probably not the best. Chapters 83 onwards became boring I skimmed through it. The smut is whole lotta great though.

Well I have mixed feelings about this story. First of all; I did enjoyed it. It was a good read. I like the author have read many of her stories. If you're familiar with the author's work, well this one is the same. An ass ML, did something that breaks the MC's heart, and then he will come wanting to get the MC back. MC will play hard to get but will eventually forgive him. What I didn't like about the story is the fact that, MC was taken out... more>> of the army after being injured and it was clear that's where his heart lies, but because his parent and cousin didn't want him to stay, he had to leave. I don't know the mentally of Chinese people (no offense) but I think they should have allowed him to choose wholeheartedly whether he wanted to leave or not. And the way his cousin treated his opinions didn't sit well with me.

Later when the MC decided to start a security company, his cousin was down right against it, despite knowing how the MC so badly wanted to.

The MC is a grown man and should have the right to decide what he wanted to do with himself and his life.

*Sighs* anyway this is the longest review I've ever written. Don't let it discourage you, go ahead and give this story a try. But I must warn you, the translation isn't top notch, some sentence didn't make sense, you'll have to use your brain to guess what they're talking about. Happy reading. <<less

Disappointed! I tried to endure the reading to hope to see the MC be stronger and change his attitude to the ML's harassment. I also tried to endure to see the ML change and stop being so annoying. But NO!

He becomes worse, he ends up sexually abusing the MC with the excuse that "previously it was me who provoked you more pleasure... now it's your time". The MC told him in a thousand ways that he didn't want to, but he didn't care, he did it anyway... anyway after a few kisses the MC will forgive him. BAD READING, DISAPPOINTING! You can like this kind of content, but to justify the abuse? That's what's wrong! <<less

The ML is making me feel uncomfortable.
Spoiler

He sexually harasses the MC and clearly the MC doesn't like it! The ML is such a bully and I don't like him! He might be the first ML that I don't like.

[collapse]

Edit: I guess what makes this story special is that the MC and ML aren't perfect, I still don't like the ML much
Spoiler

a part of me still think that bec he sexually harassed the MC, the MC was bound to give in

[collapse]
this story is really well written and I just feel for the MC so much! I'm gonna miss Princess Bai!

I also really love how when the MC and ML broke up, MC was like, I can definitely let you go. I won't stoop low for a man. Lol.

Spoiler Alert!!!!!

So, I don't like the ML. Not because he forced MC to become a cut sleeve like himself but because he wasn't serious about him. He harassed him at first and when the MC began to develop real feelings for him, and they began dating, the entire time they were dating the ML had someone else in his heart. Unbeknownst to the reader and MC, the ML treated MC as a time pass or rather substitute for the real person he was in love with.

This kind of betrayal is... more>> really hard to understand or forgive. One of the worst MLs out there. If the angst just remained between them without involving a third party, I would've liked it 'cause I love reading angst but he was cheating emotionally on MC just because he couldn't be with the other person he loved. Ah, and he had so many shortcoming because of the way he looked down on the MC and MC's brother like what?

Ugh just couldn't feel the romance, since the gradual realisation of ML's true feelings for another made all the rare good times with MC seem irrelevant and lose value. They meant nothing because ML didn't love him but he still made MC (straight guy) fall for a guy (himself). And then of course, the chase happened (typical) so they got together but really I feel so bad for MC. He deserved better. I wish he had someone else who truly cherished and loved him instead of just abusing his trust and playing with him physically and mentally. What a let down

I wouldn't settle for someone like him. He had feelings for his uncle!!! And misled the MC for so damn long without any shame. Truly the worst of MLs out there. Angst could be and almost always is such a delicious experience for me but not when it involves such blatant cheating. This makes the happy ending seem pointless and bleak. And besides, the actual mess of the absurd angst the author decided to work out in their dynamic, there were several things in the military setting of this novel that were way too unrealistic. Military genre is literally my favourite trope in BL stories but such discrepancies in how it was showcased which was far from reality, really distracted me from enjoying this story to the fullest.

MC's brother also was so hypocritical and infuriating since he harshly was against MC being gay when he himself was a gay lol it seemed that the author couldn't come up with actual reasonable struggles and had to resort to angst that made zero sense. <<less

Overall good novel! Some notes... in the beginning, the MC is simply too annoying, he's a real spoiled rotten good-for-nothing grandson, in fact I couldn't put it down in the beginning simply because I wanted to see him get bullied more, it was richly needed for him. BUT he undergoes a great transformation and at a good pace. The ML is quite the bully in the beginning and there is definitely dubcon, but he ends up being 100% devoted and so sweet. I recommend reading this novel all at once... more>> if you have the time! I was reading it a bit slow because I was busy, and there was a goo00d number of chapters where I just felt such a feeling of impending doom lol, you could just tell something bad is going to happen and ruin everything, which made it so hard to put the book down because I just wanted to get back to happy days!! But it doesn't get back to really happy days until the end. The drama seemed rather over the top to me...

Spoiler

the whole uncle thing was just bizarre, and tbh what ML did on that mountain was totally justifiable, it makes sense MC would feel a bit hurt but his coldness afterwards seemed excessive. But, it can take time for hurt feelings to become happy love again I guess.

[collapse]

The plot was pretty good, like many other readers I preferred the plot of the first half with all the military missions, it was more exciting, the second half was more slice-of-life, re-adjusting to ordinary life. I'm a former soldier myself (US military though, not China) and the way it was depicted was actually relatively accurate and made me really miss the army as well lol.

Also, the beginning part of the novel is translated very well, the second part seems like an MTL? The change is pretty jarring at first but you get used to it, and the MTL is actually easy to understand and hilarious at some points ("his sperm door was wide open"). <<less

Uggh~ I read this mainly cause of the promised scum abuse, wife chasing and groveling but it wasn't really an easy ride for me. I almost ended up grinding my teeth to oblivion from all my frustration/disgust caused by this s*xual predator ML...🙂💢 Almost all their earlier s*xual encounters fall into the dub-con/non-con territory. He's got ZERO respect for the MC, his situation or his feelings. (งಠಗಠ) ง

BXY (MC) on the other hand is amazing and realistic. I adore the character growth he go through. Watching him go from a... more>> whiny spoilt and naive kid with zero willpower and backbone to a determined young soldier with goals and aspirations made me so happy! It's so well written that I felt like I'm watching my own prodigal son grow up. And probably because of that attachment, I really couldn't stand that disrespectful punk ML who kept buzzing around him.🙂💢

Ngl tho, the groveling and wife-chasing was fun to read. ML seems to have maxed out on the [Shamelessness] skill during their period of separation. The emotions and thoughts of the MC and how it changed was quite well written... and cause of that I didn't really hate it as much as I thought I would when they got back together.

I really liked the ML's family a lot too.. quite quirky all of em~ 😂 <<less
