When a futuristic scientist is transported into the body of a young man in a fantasy world, his curiosity and desire for power push him to pursue magic. In a world without mercy, Leylin has no qualms about doing anything if it means benefits. He is cold, ruthless and calculating, never forming attachments that could impede his ultimate goal…

Honor? Who needs that… Hmmm… that guy seems too powerful for me to take on now… I better keep a low profile for now.

You want me to help you? What do I get out of it? Nothing? Bye.

Hmm… that guy looks like he might cause me problems in the future. Better kill him before he becomes a problem…

Different from your average cnovel, I even forget that this is cnovel when I read it.

Many reader dislike the MC for being the bad guy whatsoever, but for me the MC just a logical person. He just want to survive and that's exactly what he does. This novel is not suitable for you if you're looking for hero of justice that never have any fault; if you don't mind to read about a guy with a certain advantage surviving in foreign world-- then you can read this novel without any... more>> bias of average cnovels and agree that the author managed to build an interesting world in the story. <<less

Beautifully written novel in my opinion. The Mc's personality doesn't sudden go 180 like other novels with the author wanting us to believe it to be character progression. And he is not an idiot around females. As a female myself, I always get stupefied at reading about men becoming honey in these stories. Tbh it might be my pet peeve, and thankfully this novel doesnt have it. I would recommend this novel for someone with an open mind.

One of the best Chinese novels written. The MC does not follow the stereotype of using brute force over small maters of pride (you looked at my girl so I'll torture your family to death). He instead sets his goal, and does what ever he thinks is necessary, no matter how distasteful, to reach his goal.

This is one of the most horrible novels I've ever read.

Spoiler
  • Too many exclamation marks!
  • The MC isn't as saintly, altruistic, generous, merciful, heroic and emotional as I was lead to believe. No redeeming qualities whatsoever, because only by having "good" qualities can you be redeemed by whatever higher-power that exists in such a world.
  • I have no problem with evil characters, I just have a problem with |evil| characters.
  • I have no problem with smart characters, I just have a problem with |smart| characters that avoid flags to "good conflicts".
  • The MC has no personality at all. Evil people in general have no personality. He might as well be NPC A + ruthless + cold-blooded + pragmatist etc, and Meng Hao, another MC I loath just as much as Leylin, may as well be NPC B + shameless etc. Yes, no personality at all. We can start from an NPC and add qualities, but we'll never reach an actual character.
  • I was expecting for the MC to go totally out of his described character after a few chapters and it did not happen. I mean evil people have to be redeemed that is the heavenly law. They cannot stick true to their character. Only good people are rewarded and the wicked are punished.
  • The MC isn't ruthless, he is just heartless. What? What was that? "Heartless is a synonym of ruthless"?
  • The MC should have more "humanity" in him coming from Earth. What? What was that? "The synopsis says MC came from a futuristic world and not actually Earth"? "Even on Earth there are evil people"?
  • The MC has no qualms about killing, disregard the fact that he has never been shown to kill someone without reason nor benefit.
  • The MC's motivation to rise to power is ridiculous. I mean gather power just to attain god-like omnipotence and immortality? Who would want that? That's not a reasonable nor logical reason at all!
  • The MC relies too much on his OP artifact, he should do the logical thing, aka never use it again and rely purely on his mediocre talent too ascend to godhood like so many before him have done.
  • The MC isn't intelligent at all, with the A.I. Chip being the true intelligence, disregard the fact that he managed to personally outwit
    Spoiler

a literal god/devil and multiple level 8 Magi simultaneously, whose "processing power" was stated to be not a bit inferior compared to the A.I. Chip's at that moment. I wonder what tipped the scales.

    [collapse]
  • The MC doesn't think at all. The A.I. Chip just memorizes the information for him! It's not like he has to comprehend it or anything. Memorization = Comprehension -> The MC isn't intelligent at all.
  • The MC isn't a "hero of the scientists" as I was lead to believe from his background of simply being a scientist.
  • The MC isn't a scientist at all. A "true scientist", transported to a fantasy world and faced with the prospect of gathering god-like power and attaining immortality, would only study magic for the sake of knowledge disregarding power, because there is no way in heaven that you can simultaneously gather power and knowledge. By the way guys, I'm certain of this because I've managed to calculate the probable reaction of every signal scientist in the world faced with such a "bizarre" situation, disregard the unimportant fact that a scientist is a profession and instead take into consideration the baseless argument that every person's personality who has managed to get such a profession is a true role-model of the title adhering to the generalized stereotype. Also, disregard the fact that Leylin has through experimentation attained an unmatched grasp of
    Spoiler

soul-knowledge, alchemy and understanding of the physical laws of three different major worlds.

    [collapse]
  • Too many plotholes. I'm not going to start naming them out because that would be too much work, but just know that this novel is filled with them at every other corner.
  • The entire world isn't described to me at the beginning of the story. It's as loathsome as that very popular book series "A Song of Ice and Fire", where we start in a smaller part of the world and continue bigger and bigger.
  • The entire power system isn't described at the beginning of the story like so many other novels.
  • There is no romance, friendship or teammates in a novel about a ruthless protagonist.
  • The novel isn't a magical bishojo fantasy school novel like I was lead to believe.
  • Spoiler
    • He never uses the scientific method, disregard those times he is making potions or soul studying.
    • In the beginning, the fool was eating random plants to determine their effects, disregard the fact that it was shown that the A.I. Chip could detect poisonous insects.
    • The MC has several children that he doesn't name, disregard the fact that those other woman he had children with were Warlocks from noble families that simply wanted the purity of his blood incorporated in their own families and the part about the MC being evil.
    • The MC had no reason to continue being evil after joining the "Light Magi", disregard the fact that the "Light Magi" treated normal humans as cattle to be more efficiently exploited compared to the "Dark Magi".

First novel I've read where the MC isn't s*upid and makes sane choices. He is a heartless and calculating psychopath who values his benefits, survival. He avoid trouble by being a less a macho man and not madly rushing to aid of damsel in distress.

Spoiler

A girl forced to leave her family properties was being chased by enemy guards and encounters MC. MC makes a sane choice by not jumping to aid her and avoids any future troubles.

MC stays in his character and doesn't act jerk just to make plot twist.

Other reviews say that AI chip is OP but which MC doesn't have a heaven defying treasure. At least in this case all the functions of AI chip are known to us prior instead of just popping in a fight where MC is going against an enemy 10 levels higher than him.

Before making any move he prepares himself instead of just rushing in and leaving everything to luck (plot armor). <<less

Are people rating the character or the writing? If this is not to your taste, skip on over to an isekai-nakama wankfest and sing kumbaya till the cows come home. If you want a truly ambitious, cold-blooded protagonist who really owns the title.... read this. Leylin had goals from the beginning and everything he did led to the achievement of said goals.... no getting sidetracked by waifu (bloodline carriers in leylins' eyes) drama or angsting over needless morality that would have been completely OOC, he was all about getting... more>> stronger and attaining truth/eternity. He is also not an android, he does care about his descendants/bloodline; don't get ticked off just coz he is not bouncing babies on his knees and playing googoo gaga.... he is a bonafide patriarch!/founder of a bloodline and he acts like it. Is the chip OP? Yes, as OP as one of those old grandpas who are walking talking encyclopedic cheats. The AI does not, as one of the previous posters said, do all but f*ck for him.... it grows with him and he uses it effectively and efficiently.

Anyway, TL;DR.... MC is an adult character that is rare in this genre. He may have transmigrated into a teenage body but his thinking process did not regress like 98% of MC's do. He has an OP cheat that he makes use of (haters gonna hate) ; he is not a care bear... he is the guy that will dissect the care bear, he never pretended not to be that guy.... it is obvious from the get go. Read this with all this in mind and you will enjoy the hell out of our warlock <3 I know I did!! <<less

From all I have read and what I have determined myself, it is quite obvious that people who rate this novel lowly or try to discredit this novel are used to the typical wuxia novels. In this novel lies an MC that goes against the grain, he is very calculative and will do everything to achieve his aim, ETERNITY! There's no wasted characters (typed letters) in this novel as every single word leads to the MC trying to accomplish his goal. A reason I really liked this novel was because... more>> it is very refreshing to read a wuxia novel in which you can't predict what will happen next. Yes we all know the MC is going to win but I'm 100% sure you cannot guess the manner in which Leylin Farlier (the mc) will win. The only problem I had with this novel and I'm not even sure I can call it a problem, is the way it finished. The ending felt rushed and the quality pales in comparison to the rest of all the novel, but then again which novel isn't hard to complete. Well like I said this novel is hands down one of the best i've read but sadly it is finished. I honestly don't like the fact that people are rating this novel poor because it doesn't fit their 'good' MC criteria, its clearly written in the summary what type of MC Leylin is so stop discouraging other people from reading and instead go look for a book with your 'good' MC. Alright I'm done with my rant, now I shall continue my quest for eternity!! <<less

I see a lot of people giving this novel flak because of the A.I. Chip and Leylin not being a "real scientist".

First off, science is about doing research, learning new things. Do you think scientists don't use computers, simulations, and algorithms already? Besides, pretty much every MC of this type of novel gets some special god-tier bonus. At least the A.I. Chip has a semi-realistic background rather than falling from the sky or randomly being found in the first cave the MC happens to walk into.

As for the MC himself,... more>> he's definitely one of my favourites. Always cold and calculating, he will do anything if it aids his research and progress as a magi. He isn't completely heartless and occasionally helps people if it doesn't inconvenience him, but he will never help someone if it's a detriment to himself.

Personally I like his style a lot. Unlike other MCs with boundless arrogance and pride who challenge anyone who "looks at them disdainfully" and rely on "heaven-defying good fortune" (a.k.a. Plot armour) to not die, Leylin actually uses his brain and analyses the situation. He knows when to keep a low profile, and plot silently to come out ahead in the long run.

The only downside of his personality is that he doesn't have lasting relationships as he either views them as bothersome or potentially dangerous, and ultimately only trusts himself. I know it's cliche but I'd still find it more interesting if there was a long-term FMC, other than that I don't have anything to say.

If you like "smart" MCs who rely on brains over muscle, then this is for you. That's not to say he doesn't become powerful in his own right, only that he uses his research and intelligence to gradually make himself more powerful rather than relying on random godlike artifacts (aside from his A.I. Chip, but again that's related to research/intelligence and doesn't directly boost his combat abilities).

The only other small criticism I have is for the translators! You better! Get! Used! To! Exclamation! Marks! Because! They! Appear! Every! Freaking! Sentence!

Still 5/5

Edit: I changed to 3/5 because the story starts to get dull after a while.
Spoiler

The main problem is that Leylin is a sociopath with no goals other than reaching immortality. He doesn't really give a damn about any of the other characters, and the path to immortality stuff isn't all that interesting on its own.

The story is pretty good, the MC aims to discover the secrets of the universe and becoming strong is just a means towards that end, this is his objective and his personality doesnt change that much because he was already a grown up man with a solid psique and a logic mindset

His "cheat" is a computer inside his soul that has clear functions and limitations, it can record stuff, run simulations, and functions as a sensor, the limits are the need to gather new information to fuel the simulations, the... more>> inability to feel stuff above his rank and the time it requires to make complex simulations (which can extend up to years if there is not enough data), as you may guess to obtain info above one's rank is pretty difficult in the magus world and the MC is careful to hide his A.I. because the cultivators in this setting are the most cruel and calculating I have seen in a xianxia story so there are no moments for the MC to "humiliate geniuses and teach a lesson to those who despised him"

While the A.I. can look like a big cheat it becomes small if we compare it to the usual Spirit Teacher who:

1.- Gives hidden knowledge and high ranked techniques
2.- Can sense forces stronger than the MC (which helps him to run and hide)
3.- Can analyze forces stronger than the MC without them noticing as the Spirit Master has an even higher rank
4.- Gives last minute solutions for the problems at hand like information, a temporal power up or straight up fights for the MC

While the AI:

1.- Can't give new knowledge without being feed large amounts of information, it also requires plenty of time for any valuable calculation, also it requires experimentation to see if the knowledge can be used safely
2.- Can't sense forces stronger than the MC if they are using concealing techniques
3.- While the AI could analyze beings ranked higher than the MC (as long as they are not activating any kind of protection) he wont dare because it would attract the attention of such beings
4.- Can't give power ups nor can fight for the MC, any last minute solution given by the AI chip still needs large amounts of time (and usually resources) to be implemented

Interestingly the magus can also make Artificial Intelligences but they are called Spirit Genies and are mostly used for defensive-spells/energy-management and is implied that high ranked magi have minds that easily rival his A.I.

The cruelness of the societies is covered by the order and rules they conduct with, but the MC is very careful to hide his A.I. because his superiors would kill him and process his soul just for the possibility of obtaining new knowledge so he is careful not to become the center of attention nor to make strong enemies, his moral code is to help his friends as long as the price is not too high and to destroy his enemies as long as the risk is not to high and he also has no problem giving away the stuff others may value if it causes him no drawbacks

For example:
Spoiler

When his friend is condemned to death the MC offers compensation to spare her life (using something valuable that he just doesnt need anymore), then goes and kills the one who caused it all because he is already passing by the zone as he reaches his new destination

Then he completely ignores a little girl because she is not his friend nor can she give him any benefit

When in the middle of a war the MC finds an old friend in a position beneath him the MC gives him some resources and keeps him away from the battlefield

Later he trains a guy out of boredom and kills him once he realizes the guy can be useful dead

Then he becomes the savior of mankind because it benefits him... and everyone is praising him because of that

[collapse]

If we were to insert here the MC of another xianxia story as soon as they make a show of bravado destroying young masters and the like they would be secretly captured (without coughing blood or "losing face") to have their legacies extracted from them, their bodies would be used to make some nice chimeras and the magi would refine their souls to make a pendant for their kids and the MC knows it so he is really careful when going all out and usually only does it on secret

The MC can be ruthless and values the potential benefit from his actions and he doesnt hide it, unlike other MCs who destroy their enemies under the pretense of justice (even if they destroy entire clans as collateral damage) the MC recognizes the fact that killing others is a way to walk his path towards knowledge and power... just as everyone else does in the story

Particularly I liked how all the magi have a scientific mindset and are eager to accept a research as a payment or a piece of a legacy (even if broken) to include it in their own researches and are clear about how much are they willing to cooperate in the face of potential benefits

For example:

Spoiler

In the first part of the story we have the MC joining forces with a group of people to increase their chances to obtain their objective but all of them knew that if the loot was not enough only one could take it so they cooperate while getting ready to backstab each other, the reaction of the MC was pretty amusing because everyone believed him to be the weakest among the group and he only won because the other people spent their trump cards against each other but if they had to face one on one the MC would have been killed or at least severely wounded, he only won because he made his opponents underestimate him

[collapse]

In this story no one accuses the other party of being wicked or vicious because they know they would do the same given the chance so there is no obnoxious fake morality as it happens so frequently in xianxia, the MC does good if it benefits him and does evil if it benefits him... but doing evil brings way more benefits than being good; even then the MC manages to be evil in creative ways

For example:

Spoiler

After chapter 300 the MC creates his own "legacies" and hands them to youngsters in need of power who then become typical xianxia MCs who gain fame and are ambitious, the MC monitors them to gather information about the various techniques and treasures they encounter and also to monitor the political situation in the area

[collapse]

Overall the story has a little amount of cliches and the MC's attitude is fresh and amusing, the constant hunt for resources is well balanced with story development and is one of the most entertaining journeys in the xianxia genre, the arcs are all different so there is no repetition and it stays fresh all the time <<less

What I like most about this series is that MC isn't bound by any ties to other persons. Sure it has its limitations about personal relationships. I have to admit that, I am not into those sub-par romance plots into what author throws neither the time or effort. The world novel takes plot is in as ruthless as I would imagine. Though it would be nice if bit more depth was added into the world. Never the less it's a wonderful novel.

It isn't perfect, but it is one of the better fics on this site. Although a good deal of it is due to how different it is. The author actually crafted a consistent main character who doesn't deviate for s*upid random reasons. And an evil MC that is not extremely s*upid is very very rare on CN LN. This does make the MC very dry though.

If there were more stories with Evil MCs who only did evil for the sake of benefits, were not morons, and did not act lolrandumb... more>> then this story would easily drop to a 3 star. But the fact is that it is fairly unique and as such gets to fill a niche and also demonstrate the author's willingness to innovate (on this one aspect, he rips off his settings) drives it up to 4 stars, and makes it one of my favorite stories to read despite its flaws. The only similar MC I have found is in "Gu Daoist Master / Reverend Insanity", all other recommendations of "evil MC" are either morons, lolrandumb, or break character too often (usually to white knight for some woman).

The MC has an OP item (the AI chip), but so does every MC in xianxia/xuanhuan. Some complain that it is too strong because the MC relies on it a lot, but actually that is just one of the signs of MC not being s*upid (like so many other MCs) and utilizing his cheat optimally. It isn't that his cheat is exceptional compared to other cheats, its just that he uses it far better than many other protagonists do. And he does get things done under his own powers as the plot progresses, and the chip is severely limited by his own cultivation realm, so don't expect him to just take on people at higher realms. That said, calling him a scientist is a joke, the AI cheat is a scientist, the MC is the CEO that makes actually intelligent decisions on what to have the AI cheat do when.

That said, the cheat item only detracts from this story, it would have definitely been a 5 star story if the MC didn't have the AI Cheat. It is also implausible in so many ways that don't make sense, like when it somehow is able to remove toxins from the MC's body, or create accurate simulation based on information it can't know (because its unable to scan the enemy).

This series doesn't feel like it runs off of plot armor (barring a few exceptions). Generally it feels like the MC is in actual danger. He has to cleverly wield his powers (cheat included) to avoid death. As well as avoiding making enemies with those he cannot beat. Although there are some exceptions

Also other people in the world are not morons either. Young master upset that his fiance is flirting with the MC? His elder who believes he is a major realm above the MC actually makes him apologize to the MC to avoid pointlessly starting fights with random people of unknown backgrounds; this is done to set the tone and mood of how cautious magi need to be and how they can't just act like morons all the time. although again, there are intentional exceptions showing different cultures due to different nature of powers. You have those at lower levels who failed to advance because they were not cunning enough, those with inborn powers (which typically also makes them emotional and insane, and prone to getting rekt by the weaker but more logical maguses), or those who seek to build empires instead of cultivation might have different philosophy and behavior. Some of the previously mentioned differences occur across worlds though instead of being found among the magi themselves.

The MC is evil, if this is a deal breaker then don't read this. But he isn't doing evil for fun or evulz like so many other evil characters. Refreshingly he only does evil when it benefits him, and even then he keeps it on the down low because he realizes reputation matters (although he rates reputation very lowly compared to any material benefits).

For example, there are occasional NPCs who consume the souls of an entire town to grow more powerful, MC considers them morons who would be hunted down, and limits himself to experimenting on a few condemned criminals which he secretly buys from the local lord.

He also does good things as well. Either for tangible benefits or for pure PR. So long as he gets a benefit from it. For example he reformed education in some place and giving equal opportunity... so he could steal secret knowledge and so that his minions would be stronger.

MC doesn't give a rats ass about face, and avoids insulting people or getting into other people's business when he can help it. There is still conflict though because cultivation is dangerous in this setting and many people have mental instabilities and outright insanity due to cultivation errors. The MC himself has for a time such an issue which he resolves in a timely manner, but not before managing to get himself into some trouble with an overpowered organization and going on the run. But instead of being forever, he actually resolves that issue. Later on conflict stems from fighting over limited resources.

Plot holes or OOC behavior that turns out to have been justified after the fact only happens very rarely and in small amounts. Especially when compared to other chinese novels. The writing style is overall pleasant, unlike your typical xianxia with its 10 pages of "the observing crowd's mind shook as he leveled up!" or constant repetition and filler. Although at later chapters it somewhat deteriorates a bit with some filler and repetition, still not nearly as bad compared to most other CN novels in terms of padding.

Also, the Harem tag is wrong. the MC buys magically mind-wiped s*aves for his mansions whenever he moves to a new region (with various training and specialities; cooks, cleaners, maids, guards, and le*d). And later on when he becomes a major lord he marries (not out of love. more like he just needs a wife so he picks a suitable noblewoman who is interested and he has good relations with).

And gets a few concubines with interestingly powerful bloodlines (to spread his bloodline so he has more powerful minions and control over the warlock clans). Those women are largely irrelevant except for establishing his own character, this is most definitely not a "harem genre". <<less

I find it funny that people are giving bad reviews to this novel when dumb, childish novels get inherently better ratings. I also find it funny that people try to use "reason" and "science" to review this novel, but don't do the same for other wuxia/xianxia? Hypocritical.

Ignore them. If you are a fan of dark, gritty stories, then I'd give this a try. It's well translated and one of the only novels I actually like reading in its entirety. Most other novels I find myself skimping chapters because of... more>> the boring/overused descriptions.

No it's not your typical teenage story about being bullied then becoming a genius through a fortuitous chance while everyone showers you with compliments and enemies come out of nowhere just because...

Reasons you might avoid this novel: low attention span, low maturity level, don't read fantasy novels.

If you possess none of those, then give it a try.

UPDATE:

Translations were a lot better in the beginning and so was the writing. Things fall off after a hundred chapters or so. Pity. All that logic the author tried to use and build up in the beginning and he ends up ignoring it after.

4/5 but still interesting to read <<less

Aahhh, its been 1, 5 year since this novel completely translated but I'm still reread it when I'm bored.

Like seriously, I'm fed up with MC in chinese novels nowadays. If you already read this novel and read other chinese novels, you'll realize how incrediby moronic their act: always seeking trouble for any trifling matter and easily offend someone that much stronger.

With those kind of attitude, those moronic MC will always survive because the writer's deus ex machina.

... more>> How absolutely not logical.

It was the opposite of WMW's MC. He survive because his every actions full of calculations and consideratios, while he will sometimes became bold and not cowardly if he had know that the odds were quite in his side.

Sorry for blabbering, I just can't stand the reviews of those brainless readers that give this nov 1 or 2 ratings just because the MC is cold and calculating.

Reviews is supposed to give readers opinions about novel objectively, not because they hate its mc' personality.

If its like that then I can also give 1 star rating to those BL novels since I find those genre disgusting.

How about that... <<less

Its one of the best written novels I have read. The theme is dark, the MC is a villain who is willing to do almost anything to accomplish his goals, even if he has to betray the people who trusted him (he has a bottom line though).

The actual character is a genius and cunning fellow. Every action he takes is meticulously thought and well written by the author as well. Deus Ex Machinas never happen which is really good. He never wins through luck but through his own efforts and... more>> scheming. Even when a situation seems hopeless, leylin manages to turn it around with his own means, the way it’s done is incredible, maybe just one minor detail mentioned tens of chapters before comes to play a huge role in the development of situations. So many details are placed by the author through out the novel, many times you willnot even notice them or give them much thought but when they come into play in the future they become mind blowing!

Leylin is a god tier protagonist, even though sometimes he is a bit too of an ass, he is very likable.

Only thing I did not like was that, although the novel is exciting and knows how control it’s up and downs... in the world the story is being developed, almost everyone is very selfish and untrustworthy! So the MC is always alone, even if he has family and allies, they are just tools for him, because he trusts no one but himself. <<less

"The MC is not a scientist. The MC doesn't think like a scientist. The OP AI-chip does everything for him."

So what? Mathematicians use calculators, that doesn't mean they're not mathematicians. Besides, how is he not thinking like a scientist? How does a scientist think? Basically every Magus is a scientist. The theorize and experiment with the ultimate goal of learning the truth. Does Leylin not do this?

"Oh no, I don't like the story because the MC is evil!" Really? You didn't notice the Evil MC tag? What were you hoping... more>> for, another psycho going around killing people for no reason? At least MC does things for a reason, BENEFITS!

This story is awesome and to all who come up with the above mentioned (lame) excuses, f*ck YOU! <<less

I stopped reading after chapter 3, so I'm not going to give it an official rating. I've only read about a dozen JP and CN light novels so far, but this is the only one that I've dropped, and so early. I cannot give a true review, since I only read 3 chapters. I don't know how helpful this review will be to people, but I will give 4 reasons why I stopped reading.

1) The most annoying reason is that almost every dialogue line and 1/3 of non-dialogue lines ends... more>> with an exclamation mark, usually for no apparent reason. This will not be a big deal to some people, but it was super annoying to me. What if a TV show added laugh tracks after every single line, even when there was no joke? As an analogy, I'm going to use a question mark for every sentence after this.

2) The writing style/structure in the first 3 chapters didn't appeal to me? It was very superficial, as in I had trouble relating to or picturing the MC, or imagining his futuristic previous life and the current medieval world? It would jump from topic to topic without investing in much detail or imagery? It didn't make me feel interested in finding out what happens next? But I only read 3 chapters; it may have gotten better, I cannot know?

3) The evil MC tag? An evil MC doesn't have to be unappealing to a wider audience? Think of a character like Darth Vader? But I think there is a difference between an awesome evil character and just an a**hole? I can't judge the MC with only 3 chapters, but the introduction didn't seem promising to me? The 13-year old boy the MC possesses supposedly is a serial rapist? That is the dead boy, not the MC? The way MC responds to this, and wanting revenge on a failed r*pe victim, gives me the impression of as*hole rather than awesome? 4) There is supposed to be a technology gap theme and the MC is a scientist, so I assume some logic or consistency should go along with the suspension of disbelief? The body the MC possesses is extremely weak for a person in this magic world, much weaker than a girl his same age? So how did he potentially r*pe up to 100 women in the past year as an infirm 12-13-year-old? Did he r*pe 5-year-old girls? The MC is a "scientist" but is amazed that a medieval culture can produce glass bottles and engrave the inner side of rings? What? The MC immediately expected the A.I. To scan and analyze physical objects with no equipment, just from MC looking at stuff? Maybe it's magic now, but was that how A.I. And physics worked in his futuristic world? The introduction only described the A.I. On his implant as being able to store and process his memories? So those were some of the reasons why I dropped this series so quickly! I thought the introduction to the MC and the setting was poorly done, and there were some things I found weird! It may be that the story would improve if I put in a little more time! But I was really annoyed by the exclamation marks so I decided to move on! <<less

A true to life MC, where there is no demarcation for good or bad and which he has the qualities of being sometimes cruel, kind, apathetic, forgiving and also sometimes influence by greed, conscience etc. Or in other words, he's not just black or white or good or bad or whatever is opposites.

This is one of the most fascinating psychotic xianxia/wuxia I have read to date.

The key thing with this novel is that FOR ONCE we have a fairly realistic world setting, where people conspire and use their supremacy to make permanent s*aves out of the rest of the world - basically not giving anyone any chance at all, since after all, why would they?

So whereas other wuxia always have ret*rded worlds where youths are given all sorts of resources and opportunities to become dangerous to the existing power structure (LOL -... more>> as if the sociopaths in those stories would offer school environments such as the ones depicted), this one has something completely different, that is not only far more realistic, but also far more challenging for the MC:

Spoiler

One very logical pattern that shows up in the novel is that when sociopaths offer a school, or a secret club, or any other opportunity, it is always set up by its evil architects to ab*sively take advantage of all the people who join.

So if you join their Magus school, you will become both a s*ave AND a gimpy mage who can never go past 'level 1'. If you join their secret society, you will just be a pawn to be used and discarded when desired (LOL).

As a result, the story is far more satisfying because it is not only more coherent (and also more like the real world), but in addition it is far more challenging for the MC, who has to really hustle and search like mad to find ways out of these predicaments.

[collapse]

Also, where other wuxia will have easily identified characters (such as the token submissive friends and harem members) be strangely trustworthy, when EVERYONE ELSE (including the MC) is a conniving backstabber, here we have a largely self-sufficient MC who is smart enough to know that there are NO FRIENDS to be had in such environments.

In fact, other wuxia are really annoying in how they have these extremely needy MCs, who obviously are desperately wanting everyone's attention and who also need emotional 'loving' touches from people (weaklings!), when in fact they have picked the path of evil and abuse, where that kind of stuff is not available anymore in the same way.

Spoiler

So in WMW instead, we have a psychopath MC who has smartly evaluated what he can and can't get. He shows his back to no one, and his psychotically smart/safe s*xual relationships are only with mind-controlled s*aves.

[collapse]

---

Another fascinating aspect is how the story breaks the usual BS-light-dark pattern of typical wuxia, which will often have a world split between 'light' and 'dark' sects, but when you look at the details you notice that in fact there are no differences AT ALL to be seen between the light and dark: they do everything the same (including lots and lots of endless bullying inside the sects), with the so-called 'light/good' side being worse because it acts just as bad as the dark side, but tries to present itself as a righteous and moral side.

In fact, the identical but eternally in balanced opposition light and dark sides are obvious divide-and-conquer tactics being used by hidden architects in those worlds (in all likelihood), but the MCs of those wuxia never seem to notice or question anything.
Spoiler

In WMW, it is fascinating to see, first of all, a far more realistic depiction of the truly evil and abusive 'dark' side, but then afterwards we even get to see what looks like a really good 'light' side: an appearance of symbiosis and peaceful coexistence with the masses makes for an ENORMOUS contrast with the 'dark'.

HOWEVER! It is important to note that this is where the author cheats, because as you continue reading and analyzing, you realize that the so-called good guys are still secretly restricting knowledge (and making all their faithful mage followers into gimps), but even worse: in fact, the level 2+ elite 'light' forces are just as parasitical and immoral as the 'dark', so the differences were once more only in superficial appearance.

At that point, it becomes all too easy for the MC to decide to turn against 'good', because the good represented is actually just another form of EVIL. A truly intelligent MC would do something truly good for himself, but instead our psychotic MC decides to s*upidly keep risking his life playing their games of abusive power.

FWIW, the point where the MC gets righteously angry at the psychic 'good' girl for being a hypocrite is a fail on his part, IMO, because the girl was crazy and couldn't give proper justifications for trying to kill him (due to her talent/curse of rough foresight), yet clearly, beyond the justifications she could give, it stands to reason that the MC will IN FACT most likely be a calamity for people like that crazy chick and her false-good side.

The MC is trying to make it seem once again like the false-good side is worse than the dark side for creating self-serving BS rationalizations for trying to harm him 'for the greater good', but this seems like a very minor detail, especially considering the far bigger problem for the MC: his own moral position is no higher than hers (clearly) and he is generally just as incoherent, if not worse: why is he seeking to do evil instead of (real) good?

[collapse]

---

As far as the AI Chip, I'd say it was poorly introduced at the start (with bad science / logic / descriptions of how it worked and existed in his original world), which broke immersion a bit, but in the end it is well developed in the story.

AI Chip-like special powers usually suck in LNs because they become too much of a mental crutch for the MC/author, who then basically lazily offloads all of his thinking, only to become nothing but brute force, with all answers and solutions coming like magic from the AI (some stories will go so far as to have the AI do auto-aiming, or have it even move their body for them, etc.).

Luckily, WMW does not (IMO) fall prey to this all-too-common mistake, and instead it still largely feels like the MC is thinking and figuring most stuff out himself, with the AI being used for appropriate sub-tasks. <<less

This is the best novel out there at least for me, the characters are real and have personality and you don't see the usual cliches, for example in most of the novels, the friends of the MC evolve in power with him (in a speed which is inexplicably unless they have some cheat...) but are static in personality... here in WMW some get killed, some characters die of old age, others change, and the power levels are realistic.

You won't go to other place were people are stronger at younger age... more>> without any logical explanation (the usual resources excuse) no, in this novel the MC is always the cool cunning intelligent smart handsome genius.

The characters 'friends' won't always be out there some disappear even if they are still alive, and even enemies are not always get ride of... it's like life people come and go.

The plot is extraordinary it's like nothing you will see in a CN or KN where you have the usual plot: MC get dragged into trouble, always find cheats, legacy... and expected plot armor.

Here the only thing Leylin found (after a lot of empty discoveries and bad luck) would be helpful for a while but stop his advancement and brought him a lot o f obstacles to advance further in later stages...

The usual going from lower word to a stronger does not exist here because (spoiler). and even in the same magus world, places like the south cost, he did not travel through it like in game from low level to high. and the central contient (outside of the south cost) which is known to MC to be a place were strong mages existed is explained 2 arcs before getting there.

One of the thing I like most about this, is the evenement which make a lot of since, there is no forced plot and the story is progressing in a logical way according to the personalities of the MC and the others, and the structure of the world.

for example let us imagine a plot were the MC or any thing else (monsters, enmy, nature...) is going to distroy the word (just an example) when you read this kind of staff you get borred because you are almost sure that the world won't get distroyed, ether the MC save the day, or he fail if he is the villian... in wmw you can not predict what will happen at all the MC can lose, can get weaker or stronger in inexpected and logical way.

The power system is realistic and original because it is a mixture of cultivation (with realms, breakthroughs) and magic (rank, elements...) and the AI chip who give stats but not like most KN who have stats that makes no sense unlike in WMW. and in most of the time after leylin became a mage there is times when he can't read the stats of openents and even if that could not tell you much about there true power because variable like how much your oppenent is good at this magic or that can't be calculated.

The last thing is the MC, some of you will disagree with me but I like who he is true to himself and by the way for those of you that expect the MC to get better or a change in personality, I will tell you he is almost always the same rational and cold his goal is knowledge, power and eternity.

for those who think the MC is a psychopath, you are wrong he definitely did things that are far beyond common evil and most of the time not because his life in danger or watsever but because he needed experement, informations, resources... however you have to understund that this is the way of the magus world and the mages are already beyond the realm of humanity from the mement they became first rank or even before when they still acolytes those that didn't die at the hands of there masters or other acolytes... are already considering normal humans as cattles, especialy the dark mages who are the background of the MC, so you may emagine for exampl what a morning-star mage (high ranking) could possibily do if they have to. <<less
