eugh... read this in one sitting. thank god.

despite a lot of reviews that said this is a bittersweet story and good read, I found it as rather dull and s*upid. some misunderstandings that can be solved through 15min talks were being dragged into a couple chapters full of unnecessary drama and angst. also, the fact that the ML blamed everything that happened solely on fl, while never reflected on his own shortcomings, such as lack of communication and expression of love to the fl, is something that doesn't sit well... more>> with me while reading this story. I kept wondering why everyone in the novel blamed and antagonised her, especially the ml's friends. tbh, it's none of their business in the first place. when there's a chance to explain, there's always another interruption from the other related party. seeing the author wrote the FL as someone meek with excuse that 'people changed in the years they were apart', doesn't make me feel moved by her. rather, the FL came out as someone with low self-respect as she let the ML stepped on her again and again, just because he felt justified to do that since she was the one who abandoned him first from his pov.

overall to me, this story is trying too hard to be angsty with all this unnecessary drama and intentionally weak-written characters. 2/5 at best. <<less

This is an example of the dark side of modern Chinese pop culture. It is dangerous that it has become one of the most read novels in the last ten years. I would not consider the novel a romantic piece as such. Instead, I wish to explore the overwhelmed fanfare, which I found it should be talked about under the lens of social science.

Materialism in modern China marries the traditional toxic masculinity to create the perfect male character that is both wanted and feared by women. The main male character... more>> represents what Chinese women supposedly desire at a potential partner, namely social status, wealth, and success. So long as he is not an average Joe, readers would blindly accept he way he badly treats his girlfriend (i.e. Assaulting, yelling, criticising, rejecting, isolating her to his liking). Isn't it dangerous when men are given power and authority based on their social status? I wonder which reaction readers would have if the leading male character was a brick-layer or truck driver.

To an extent, the author glorified marital r*pe and abuse (both physically and emotionally) against women. This is a serious matter, regardless of how the author painted the situation as rosy as it could. There must be no excuse for a husband to sexually abuse his spouse. Perhaps, readers are okay with a narrative that it is normal for a man to exercise his possession and domination over his wife. The acceptance leaves me horrified of how many women have been suffered by the hands of their husbands or boyfriends in the name of love.

The readers' positive reception of the main female character is another interesting point to make. Whilst boosting the male character to the point of a living God, the author made every effort to degrade her as much as possible. In the book, the female character was described as an air-head, who knew and wanted nothing better than to be a pet to the male character. She had to be a clumsy, child-like individual throughout the story. Why? I wonder if it was because readers (especially female readers) would not welcome a sophisticated/multi-faceted female character. Would readers feel more appealing and relatable to read a story about a girl, who is inferior to them in everyway possible, ultimately gains precious love? Does it make the readers feel good about themselves?

The Chinese pop culture has focused to primarily promote physical appearance (and monitise it, of course), be it a man or woman. Look is everything. In the book, the author repeatedly emphasised the main male character's physical traits as a tall, built, and gorgeous being. I could understand it was designed to feed female readers' fantasy. However, overly obsession of appearances (i.e. Almost all other characters would somewhat adore the male character because of how he looked) is a poor sign of the culture.

The book is fairly short and easy to follow. Perhaps just read it when you are travelling. Leave the book at the next train station so another person can pick up to kill time.. <<less

Ummm I don't get it. The ML is very um not very good? He's lucky to have her, the MC even if I don't love her, but dude seriously she has amazing patience for him in social/emotional interactions. Even if he waited all those years, it doesn't change his cold personality despite his warm actions. If he was a real person, I feel like you guys would also feel emotional tired with him. He's emotionally very tiring because he doesn't know or want to communicate. She guesses and waits everything... more>> for him - he is so lucky to have her. Like forget him being successful and good looking. If you can't emote well or communicate well, it's an exhausting relationship & it takes a special person to read your mind and not be insecure all the time since that person doesn't communicate. That's why she's better than him. He's #blessed and that is imo the reason why he waited 7 years BECAUSE LOL HE KNOWS NO ONE ELSE WOULD DO THAT FOR HIM... Omg. Jesus. By the way, he never listens to her point of view or explanations.... Why is he such a swoony male lead again? I really fail to understand y'all and I'm fine with that. <<less

Summary:

This is a modern romance with a hint of tragedy and frustration; a story about two people who love each other but are unable to properly communicate with each other.

Basically, a couple dating in college separate after a huge misunderstanding. The girl MC runs to the United States without knowing that she's left the male MC broken... After 7 years, they meet again.

... more>> Review:

Don't expect this to be a sweet romance -- it's more of a bittersweet drama. Towards the end, this novel does get a little fluffy, but for most of the beginning and middle of the novel, the overwhelming feeling is frustration and despair.

It's the great question of "Why can't two people who love each other be together?" The timid female protagonist and hot-headed male protagonist are like fire and water. Even when their relationship suddenly changes in the middle of the story (and I mean SUDDENLY), they aren't able to convey their feelings and words.

Conclusion:

Overall, this really wasn't bad. The translation is good and the bittersweet story quickly turns into a sweet one. The pacing is a little jumpy and fast, and the ending is a lot less exciting/satisfying than the dramatic beginning, but it's not a story that I hate. You might enjoy this if you like soap-opera-esque drama.

Personally, I enjoyed reading it, but on later reflection, I'm not a fan. I would find it super annoying if I was one of the character's friends. I guess I'm just not a fan of unnecessary drama caused by two characters with poor listening and communication skills. So many times, I wanted to scream "You! Stop interrupting and jumping to conclusions! You! Just talk and stop running away! Pay attention and stop being wishy-washy!" But that's just me. :P <<less

There’s seriously something wrong with your brain if you think it’s cute when a drunk ex-bf (ML) shows up to the house and forcibly kisses MC even though they broke up 7 years ago. MC is wrong for being flustered whenever he did dumb sh*t like this.

What really ruined this novel for me was how awfully shallow all the characters were.

Here are some moments that made me want to chuck my phone into a lake:

Spoiler

ML’s bff: “Actually, I have always been puzzled, why you could become Yi Chen’s girlfriend during university. You should know back then, there were many girls who were prettier, smarter and more outstanding than you that also liked Yi Chen.”

Random woman: “I told him, it is fine if he likes someone from a different faculty, but at least choose the most beautiful girl.”

I-

Since when did we analyze someone’s worth based on looks.

BETCH IT’S NOT THE MC FAULT THAT ML COULDN’T HANDLE A BREAKUP.

MC doesn’t stand up for herself and neither does the ML say anything to their degrading remarks.

Am I the only one bothered by this? If my boyfriend’s friends made these remarks to me, somebody would have to say bye bye to their balls.

[collapse]

All in all I realized the MC was also shallow. She couldn’t have possibly loved someone who was always cold, distant, and rude to her. I just know she loved him because of his looks. There’s nothing good about the ML. How can two people love each other without any communications.

I also find it very frustrating that MC just doesn’t explain herself. She never says how she feels, or how much she struggled in the past. Her lines consists of “I’m sorry” or “Yi Chen I-“. Yes, only “Yi Chen I-“ because yi Chen always interrupts before she can even say anything!

Great love story I thought the angst would be strong in this but thankfully it's not so strong.

At the beginning I was getting frustrated on why they can't sort their feelings until my friend started lecturing me about love and all -_- anyway back to what I was saying, the beginning was written and translated very well the attitude of the characters made me want to slap them and made me question as to why can't two people who like each other be together? I was ready to drop it... more>> since sad love story is not in the list of my want to read xD Then when different layers of the story was peeled I found the answers and myself wanting for more and rooting for them. The mystery of what happened to the MC overseas is very intriguing and made me want to read more.

This is not a sad depressing story, yes there's sad parts but that made the story all the more better. <<less

This is probably the go-to series as far as bittersweet/reunited lovers genre is concerned, but not one of Gu Man's best works.
Spoiler

The female lead is naive and bubbly, but never felt secure with their relationship as she chased after the male lead, while he is restrained and unable to express his emotions. Due to a misunderstanding she moves overseas, however both are unable to move on and stay trapped in the past.

7 years later, they reunite, and after more misunderstandings, the male lead pursues her with mixed feelings (anger at being abandoned so easily but also unable to let her go) while the female lead comes to terms with how much he actually loved her.
[collapse]

The story follows the standard formula for these settings, so there's nothing particularly innovative but what is necessary for the story is done well. There's a good mix of sweet and angsty moments, while the characters move from an awkward relationship to a more comfortable one. It does fall into some of the trappings of the genre - getting caught up in the past and not focusing as much on their present relationship, while their interactions are a little stilted (though if they could communicate, the misunderstanding wouldn't have occurred) and certain scenarios appear somewhat forced in order to test or further their relationship. At times the male lead also appears domineering and the relationship's pace appears rushed.

Overall it's a good story and well worth the read if you like the drama and romance genre, though Gu Man's Blazing Sunlight has a similar setting but is much better.

First, its a good read. But as a reader, I feel wronged.

ML wanted to break up first right? He asked her to go further away from him. In the FL pov, that came out of nowhere. Based on her personality of course she will leave. I would too. Plus with the younger sister saying nonsense before that. Im just saying I do understand her action. But the thing is the ML never apologised for that and put on the blame on her for leaving. In another word, he’s playing victim.... more>> Bcs of that, everyone is blaming her. I can’t relieve the grief I felt in my heart. Mo Chen was treated unfairly. <<less

Firstly, I want to say thank you to the translators for their work. I have so much respect for people who translate and the 1 star review is only concerned with the story itself.

With that being said, for my final verdict, I'll quote Tyra Banks: "It was so bad, I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible, so I give you a one."

This story is super questionable in terms of how toxic the romance is, but there were things I didn't understand about the movie when I... more>> saw it so I got to read the novel. Now, how come He Yichen was one of the most popular web novel characters in China a few years ago? (I don't know if he still is), that dude is toxic af and Zhao Mosheng, even if I don't really like her, deserves better.

Spoiler

I hate that Mosheng is so 傻白甜. I can't believe that someone who spent seven years living alone in America being Chinese, not knowing English well, with a father who committed su*cide and a mother who never spoke to her again and without money, can not be a mature and self-sufficient person. Mosheng is s*upid af for the purpose of looking innocent and desirable for Yichen's image of her when they were both in college, and I hate it. She's supposed to be a full-grown-ass woman but she acts like a freaking child and I like my women emotionally mature and with agency over their own lives, something that Zhao Mosheng painfully lacks.

[collapse]

Anyway this story is problematic, but I still going to watch the movie again because Yang Mi acts there and she is my favorite actress so... <<less

It was a painful read. The ML just didn’t do it for me. That whole « aloof, Prince Charming, super outstanding » persona he had just made it worse. Not only was he rude and impatient with the FL but he didn’t treat her like he valued her ; from what we read she put in most of the effort so it’s not strange she found it hard to believe he liked her.

The FL was so submissive while the ML was just throwing his weight around. Even if they had... more>> a misunderstanding, if she does not come to talk things out first, he will dwell with his misunderstandings and treat her poorly. Even his friends treated her poorly.
Towards the end he kind of changed but he still didn’t apologize for the way he treated her😣. I don’t believe that being a person of few words means there are not other ways you can show appreciation and love. <<less

I read this long time ago.... and still left me a bitter taste. I can understand the ML conflict emotion to the MC, but the way he blame her for their separation like he didn't have a leg in it. Even after they got together and he try to forget the past, I still can't accept him fully.

I feel really sorry and mad for the MC, she's a victim too. After her father death she move to other country, and I still believe if he didn't say what he said... more>> that day and if his adoptive sister didn't try to drive her away, she wouldn't go and left him. After she comeback to the country, all their classmates and the ML himself blame her. Like?!!!!!! How?! Did he not even knew how hurtful his words that day?!! ?? I feel sorry for Mo sheng! She didn't do anything wrong from the beginning to end!

good novel but I wouldn't consider reading this again. I really can't accept the male lead. <<less

Kudos to the author because every time I read one of their creation, it makes me wonder whether these characters are real. I don't normally read short stories as they tend to be straight with minimal content, but I gave this a chance because, obviously, the author, and it had longer chapters. It's about an unusual pairing even for webnovels (I think... hahaha). Although I found that both leads had their shortcomings, they do have a link, in a way, to support and understand each other. If you are very... more>> particular about the details, then this story won't suit your taste. Also, thank you to the translator. <<less

I love, love this story. It flows like a poem, a beautiful poem. Another great novel by Gu Man and as again translators did a great job. The content this translation blog chooses is almost always good stuff. Their love for the story, for the characters and their work reflect in their translations.

I especially like the last paragraph from Epilogue 1 -

"A person’s flower bloomed. A person’s flower withered. All these years from start to finish, nobody asked about it."

P.S I don't want to review this story for anyone, the... more>> ratings and previous reviews speak volumes about how good this story is. It's nothing but a bit of my love for this story.

She (FL) didn't appeal to me, selfish, indecisive and even when they explained the what's and the why's for me she was the one with poor communication skills instead of him.

I tend to be tolerant and generous with this kind of Chinese novels but the relink of the of the relationship and how/why they first made "peace" just throw me off so much.

Spoiler

It was like kinda forceful how they end up doing it and with the worse actitud from both of them, she saying nothing and not explaining why she was packing and him just mad thar "she was leaving again. And to top it off, it's implied and kind of ambiguous, he then realized that she was a V and then it's like he can forgive and stops being and jerk with her moving forward. It's not that him couldn't throw her sharp comments, but if he is making the decision to marry her that actitud it's a red flag.

ML is an as*hole. The kind of man that would insult his lover but it's okay because that's just how he is, cold and cool. MC has no personality, since you see she doesn't even mind the ML and his friends insult her face and brain.

Waited for 7yrs for her? But after they met again, ML act so highly of himself making the FL think it's all her fault that she left 7 yrs ago? Bs. I understand his pain, but what he did to get her back isn't very... more>> lovely at all.

Also, up until the end ML never cleared why he said that to MC 7 yrs ago that made her leave for US. It's because he thinks MC can't handle her own emotions and might blame herself. Saying that's for her own good fck. And he never mentioned to his uncle and auntie who are her parents. I wonder how that happened. Very unrealistic. <<less

Only on chapter 3 right now and I'm having a sh*t ton of regrets. I just came from watching, then reading You're My Glory by the same author, expecting well written characters with a great story. Instead, I get this ice man with facial paralysis who thinks nothing of assaulting a woman by her door way or dragging her off, and a woman who allows herself to be dragged off. Le sigh

Imma give this a few more chapters. Putting a bit of faith in the author and reader ratings. Hopefully,... more>> whatever misunderstandings they obviously have will be resolved soon, and we can get to the sweet parts.

Update: read up to chapter 5, but I can't go any further. I can't find any redeeming qualities of the ML (he was a d*ck to her in school, and he's a d*ck to ppl now!) and the MC is way to passive: just going along with everything the ML does (even though he supposedly broke her heart)

Seeing that this is a short story, I really wanted to power through it, but then I remembered my ginormous TBR list! I tried 🤷🏾‍♀️ <<less

Mo Sheng's dad the indirect reason why Yi Chen's parents died. Although it doesn't have much impact (actually none) on the story since Yi Chen never tells Mo Sheng but I still think it's quite significant. Actually this would be the real reason for the break-up and I appreciate that for his feelings, he put aside past hatred which really can't be shifted to the blameless Mo Sheng, and decided he'd rather happiness. Because dead people can't be brought back, no matter if you take revenge.
