He only needed one thing important to him—and that would be enough.

Kase has been recently laid off. He’s dreading the job search process when Agi, the tough-looking owner of a bakery, calls out to him and gives him a job on the spot. Kase is unsociable and doesn’t know how to deal with people, and the warm friendly atmosphere of the bakery leaves him unsettled and confused. A fire at his apartment somehow ropes Kase into living with Agi, and as they spend more time together, Kase feels helplessly attracted to Agi’s gentle hands. The kinder that Agi treats him, the more Kase finds himself dependent on Agi, and Kase’s overflowing feelings almost overwhelm him…

Disclaimer: I am the translator for this novel.

This is a story about a man’s struggles within the cycle of violence and abuse and how he runs into a group of former society outsiders who allow him to heal, break away from the cycle, and find redemption.

At the start of the story, Kase Hiroaki has retreated into a lone, solitary life ever since he broke up with his ex. He’s chained down by his lack of social skills and the fact that he had committed domestic violence on that ex. He... more>> yearns to do better next time, to be kinder and gentler to the person he falls in love with, but the fact is, he has no friends—not even a single person to talk to. He clings to a yellow shirt that his ex gave him as his only source of warmth and comfort.

Kase takes the job that Agi offers him at the bakery mainly because it will take time for Kase to find full-time work. As Kase works with the bakery owner, Agi, the baker, Chise, and her young son, Rio, Kase struggles with his feelings as he interacts with them. He finds himself growing comfortable with them—but he wonders can he really belong here?

If you are concerned about how the topic of domestic violence is treated in this story, I will say it is not dismissed or treated lightly. It is a story about healing, but the harm he did is not shoved under a rug.

At its heart, this story is about finding a place to begin the healing process and a place to belong. Kase wants to change, but he doesn’t know how to interact with people. Agi gives him both the push that Kase needs and the space that he needs to re-integrate with people. The people at the bakery un petit nid have backgrounds that have made them outsiders to society in the past, and as bewildering their warmth and friendly banter is, Kase finds comfort among these people and a stray cat that he picks up along the way.

Beyond the pain and the struggle that comes with the healing process, it’s lovely, it’s warm, it’s gentle. These strays have found their own little nest—and for me, this story is truly un petit nid. <<less

To be frank, I had a rough time reading this not because it was badly written, but because Kase's story is a realistic, gritty one and it makes you want to look away. Despite it's cute sounding title, it deals with some pretty heavy stuff but does a pretty good job in handling it. Kase's abused and abuser past took me as a surprise (I literally went "wth kase?!"), but I actually liked the fact that his past abuse had a real negative effect on him. There are plenty of... more>> stories where the MC is abused in their past, and yet they come out as pristine and kind-hearted as ever. It can get tiring to see abuse be used as a "woe is them" background and not have actual affects on how the characters view or navigate their relationships. Here, Kase has legitimate issues caused by trauma and neglect, the story doesn't shy away from the fact that his past has real consequences on how he treats his relationships and his hard time connecting with people. It even feels a bit disheartening because he realized the path he's on and had tried his best to change even before meeting Agi, but has varying results.

I greatly appreciate that even though Kase found his place in the world, Agi's arrival into his life didn't magically fix everything. Kase still has issues like extreme clinginess, low self esteem and paranoia by the end of the story, but it's a happy end because you can feel that even with these issues, Agi loves him a lot and is willing to work with him. It's nice that Agi doesn't have all the answers or solutions to Kase's problems and make them all disappear in a snap. Heck, even Agi himself has some issues from his past and it's refreshing that while Agi loves Kase, he isn't depicted as some savior whose come to rid Kase of all his problems.

Overall, it's definitely a good story but be warned because it's not a fluffy story like the title suggests. It's not all doom and gloom, there is some funny moments but Kase his problems. Also, this story is actually a spin-off from another story, which clears up the fact that sometimes the story feels like you should know certain things that you don't; but I don't think it would affect your reading experience by much.

Spoiler

Also, I've read Tattoo and frankly these two novels are different. The ML in tattoo has PTSD/Trauma from an event but has a stable job, a big support group along with friends and family from the start and only needed MC to Believe in Love Again™ and magically cure his trauma to become a "perfectly normal" person again. Kase has depression, ptsd, was actively abused multiple times, no support group, job or any sort of stable relationship in his life at the beginning of the book, he's been alone since his parents died. While Tattoo is a good story, it is also very optimistic in it's resolution while House of Sweets is much more realistic in how it deals with it's trauma resolution.

The story is very beautifully written. As the translator said, the story is about healing.

It's bittersweet, with angst, yet so fluff. I'm really happy for our main couple, Kase and Agi.

It makes me proud how Kase's character growth in such a short story. He is a gloomy and full of negative thought, yet he want to be a better man for Agi, he learns to be selfless. Ironically tho, Agi actually very smitten all over Kase and would very happy to spoil him rotten, hahaha.

As an ex yakuza, Agi is... more>> actually a warm person. While it seems like Agi is the one who good to Kase, but in actual I believe Agi also receive a lot from Kase. Agi finally found someone he wants to protect from the bottom of his heart, not from his guilty conscience toward his past.

Kase found warmth and home from Agi. And Agi timeline also moves forward due to Kase. <<less

At first, the story started quite slow that it made me bored. However, it immediately picked up the pace as we catched up with MC's past. What I love about this novel that it's never shy away with the darkest corner of humans mind could conjure when they had gone through painful trial in their lives. It so agonizing painful to see MC's thought. His redemption and his development to be a better person. He didn't manage to change completely because that's impossible with so much baggages he had before... more>> he met ML. But at least he learned. He tried to better for the sake of ML. And ML is so kind and patient toward MC. He never tried to probe MC. He knew the lines to keep. And he deliberately helped MC in his lowest point by accepting his everything. <<less

This novel really gives you a bittersweet feeling although it'll give you diabetes towards the end. Their journey to each other was quite bumpy before they met and it was such a miracle that somehow their paths intersected and if you look through it things really happen for a reason, you may not know now but in time you will. The flow is quite natural and sometimes it would make you upset reading it because how the author told the story but overall it's a good read :)

THIS BOOK IS SUPER GOOD!! I've been waiting for Nagira Yuu's book to be fully translated since I got a feeling that she's a great author that could capture the bittersweet taste of life, after I read the first chapter of Dear Nicole (I even bought the ebook in Japanese though I couldnt read Japanese>< though I'm currently learning)

It's kind of slow burn so far, but their chemistry is already so apparent. The MC is very flawed, due to his childhood experience (which is no excuse) but he acknowledged... more>> it, agonised over it, and wanted to change for the better. He's a lonely person and it was the ML and the people surrounding the ML who sheds light into his life. So far, I think it's a story about redemption and finding love in the process. Super curious about how their story will unfold from now. RECOMMENDED. <<less

It's heart wrenching and warm. The flow is realistic and the characters are real enough — especially our MC, Kase.

Spoiler

I like how the story portrayed his negative qualities. His obsessive and possessive qualities weren't just magically cured or brushed off. Up until the end, he was still this weird and possessive person but his desire to treat the next person he falls in love with kindly and tenderly curbed it. Although it was a bit twisted, what with him wanting to be a mistress if Agi were to get together with a woman. Lol.

[collapse]

I might just be a bit more twisted but I would've liked it if there was a teeny bit more angst.
Spoiler

I wanted Kase to completely misunderstand and just leave quietly, refusing to accept that "Agi and Chise are about to get married".

Rating: 5/5- Really well written with some of the best thought out angst.

I really connected with this MC and ML. Their relationship development and especially the MCs character development was absolutely brilliant. I enjoyed the side characters and I think the questions left to be answered after reading, was suitable for this novel.

I cried and laughed but mostly my heart ached from chapter 1 to 28. It’s such a beautiful read.

Highly recommend reading this.

I love all the characters and how they accompany each other in day to day life. I thing the author has done a great job balancing all the nuances of the characters. Translation was very well done. Tears are a part of this journey as well as accomplishing healing🌹💝

Stories like this that are slice-of-life and psychological in nature is a miss-or-hit for me. Seldom can authors capture the subtleness of human emotions at different angles in different times that are believable to a skeptic's eye.

For a novel dealing with such heavy themes, I'm dissatisfied with how the 'healing' is dealt with. Granted, it's a short story so things couldn't be resolved that thoroughly, but when 95% of the novel talked about MC's pain, trauma, and abuse, I expect there to be a satisfactory resolution!

In fact, I expected... more>> this to be about healing at the onset, but then as I read on and was nearing the end did I realized that the literal 'healing' happened at the end. Excuse me for expecting this to be like Tattoo (and other genuine healing novel—in it's truest meaning— out there) where the course of the novel is about resolving the issue, instead of adding more and aggravating it— which happened at some point in this novel.

To say that I'm disappointed need not to be said. <<less

Poignant and yet so beautiful! The characters are amazing, their growth even more so. Its beautiful and tragic at the same time. (◍•ᴗ•◍) ❤ MC's journey will truly break your heart, he is in no way perfect. He has done something unimaginable but was forgiven. What he only wanted is love and be accepted fully. His childhood trauma is so painful to read, and the sad things is that it's really happening in real life. You will feel his emotional turmoil and will sympathised and cry with him and feel your... more>> heart stabbed. I can't help but cry in the middle of the night while reading his struggles.

ML has his own share of pains/trauma and so as his childhood friends. His character suits the MC very much, he's the missing piece that helps our MC be whole again. He helps the MC open up and feel life again. I love how the author depicted Agi's character

MC's journey to healing is realistic, it's gradual and you can see how he's struggling to change and fail time and again. His trauma, pain and issues didn't magically disappear when he met the ML.

Special shout out to RIO! I ℒℴѵℯ*¨*• ♡ that little ball of sunshine, he's the cutest! And little croissant. <<less

I love MC’s journey to redemption! MC was so timid and insecure. He don’t even know or understand basic human interactions. That’s what made the story so good bc he’s so insecure but crave love and human interaction so badly. So glad he found ML who is mature and patient enough to teach and give him all that he deserves.

3.5/5 stars

I've read this a long time ago and too be honest, the healing part is kinda abrupt (and yes I know it's a short story) but anyways, the characters caught my eyes and ML is a nice guy so this warms my heart.

It's felt nice refreshing my brain with a short, slice of life novel.

Tag says it's cute and it's really cute. Damn! I'm a cat person which makes this story cuter.

MC is really pitiful. Good thing he met ML. This is a good read. So emotional but very satisfying. They both deserve each other.

The psychological drama is well-explained in the story. I was able to understand both MC and ML characters.

Spoiler

At first, I was worried that ML will just see MC as a brother or a substitute to his brother-friend. Good thing every was clear and there's not much conflict about his feelings.

The ending is cute too. <<less

I really struggle with how to react to stories like this. I've read similar stories that deal with the cycle of abuse, where and abused person becomes an abuser, then tries to heal and find redemption. It's just so hard because it's hard to sympathize with an abuser, regardless of what kind of past they had.

In this story, Kase's past is truly awful. He experienced some horrific stuff at the hands of his uncle, and this whole story deals with the cycle of abuse theme. After growing up being abused... more>> and never feeling love, Kase himself turns into an abuser because he has no idea how to treat someone well because he himself has never been treated well. His story was heartbreaking, and I started crying at one point because it hurt to read. I really did feel bad for him, but at the same time, what he did to his ex-lover feels completely unforgivable. So it was difficult to reconcile the feeling of wanting Kase to find happiness and get out of the darkness he had lived in his whole life, and also feeling that Kase needed to face consequences for what he did. It did help that Kase was genuinely horrified at what he did to his ex, and he never tries to make excuses for himself, but it doesn't change it.

I don't know. This was a dark, and also fluffy story. Despite everything I enjoyed reading how Kase finally found the love he had never received before. I give this story four stars simple because I just had a hard time truly empathizing with Kase after reading about the awful things he did to his ex. But Kase definitely suffered in the past, and suffered mentally trying to deal with the things he'd done. I wouldn't say he got off easy because of the suffering he went through, but nothing changes the fact that he was an abuser. Yet, I could never wish for him to keep suffering considering the abuse he suffered his whole life.

Overall, this is a story of redemption and love. The ML has his own traumas and his own issues, but treats Kase with endless patience, which is exactly what Kase needed. Beware the dark themes, but give the book a shot and mind the content warnings at the start of some chapters. <<less
