Cheng Yujin was the elder twin sister, who was supposed to be engaged to an excellent man. However she later learned that her fiance, Marquis Jingyong, had proposed to her because he mistakenly recognized her as her younger twin sister. Marquis Jingyong and her younger sister had a deep relationship, and after many twists and turns, finally broke through all hardships and became eternal lovers. While Cheng Yujin was the villain who replaced her sister’s good marriage, kept framing her sister, and hindered the main couple to be together. A really wicked older sister and poisonous late wife.

After the younger twin sister was reborn, she revealed Cheng Yujin’s ‘conspiracy’ early on. Everyone scorned her, and her so-called fiance was indifferent. Cheng Yujin sneered and tore off their engagement letter in front of her fiance.

Everyone was gloating and happily waiting to see her regret her actions. However, before Marquis Jingyong had a chance to see Cheng Yujin’s regret, he saw his former fiancee marrying her uncle.

The ninth uncle of Cheng family was truly a hidden dragon, his real power frightening everyone.

***

Cheng Yujin, this coquettish little wife, lightly lifted her eyebrows and casually said, “A mere Marquis Jingyong, is he worthy? Do you think that robbing him away will affect me?”

Almost forgot to say, ninth uncle wasn’t surnamed Cheng. His real name was Li Chengjing, the crown prince.

Great story with a smooth flow and definitely a binge read. Love the twist in the last chapter "Extra Life." This is uniquely creative and it is not a conglomerate of other writings.

It was a good read for historical genre novel.

I like it a little.

  • Rational fe/male lead.
  • Broken engagement.
  • Twin sister.
  • Fight to the throne.
  • Pair of dragon and phoenix.
I quite like how it ended. They ended it with the extra chapter about Li Chenjing's POV in the previous life.

Recommended.

The novel is great, definitely a good read. I MTLed from chapter 105 towards the end because I can't wait anymore.

I really like the character setting of the FL and the ML and also how the story didn't focus on the FL's revenge for what happened in the past. I personally like that the FL is more inclined in living a better life in the present than the scruples that had happened in her past life. The extras were also good.

I enjoyed reading this so much! I would love to... more>> read this again when the translation is done. <<less

Kind of torn about this book to be honest. On the one hand, I love the way the characters are written showing the complexities contained within one’s personality. Like the MC, ML, emperor, the cheng family and so on. All of them are different from how they’re outwardly portrayed, all of them show both strengths and weaknesses, kindness and selfishness, love, indifference, hatred, etc.

My biggest minus point is the feeling that there’s a lack of resolution... whether it’s the MC and her mothers/ the rest of the cheng clan, the... more>> ML and the emperor, and especially the MC, her sister and her first husband.

Spoiler

I mean the MC, her sister and her husband all have memories of their first life. But this is never addressed by each of them with each other. It shouldn’t be a problem given that their positions wind up being so far apart that it’s totally unnecessary for MC to do anything because neither of them can affect her. But it’s also irritating because MC’s sister’s jealousy and bitterness and MC’s ex husband’s thoughts and regrets are mentioned a couple times throughout the book that it feels somewhat of a let down that there’s never a resolution to those emotions or to their actions.

On top of that, MC’s sister and husband are truly very very dislikable so it would be nice if MC used some of her authority to swat them down or at least confront them properly about their behavior. I mean the sister basically stole her marriage, inadvertently caused her death and probably ruined her son in her first life, continued to backstab her in the second life all the while requesting for help with her own marriage and then turning around again to spread rumors that the MC got lucky marrying the ML. The MC’s ex husband ignored his wife’s problems with his mother (basically left it all to her to handle by herself), got involved with his wife’s sister while she was pregnant, kind of caused his wife’s death by causing her emotional instability and then being absent while she was giving birth, realized he loved his wife (MC), married that bloody sister that caused his wife’s death and then turned around and ignored his son with MC until he died a useless wastrel. In his second life, he chose MC’s sister and married her but couldn’t even be bothered to treat her well, caused her miscarriage by manhandling her and didn’t bother to fix it until it was literally forced by MC. Truly. Abominable. Couple. I mean yes, both of them basically winded up in an unhappy marriage with a career that went downhill but... it doesn’t feel that satisfying given how horrible the both of them were. It would honestly be easier if the author just mentioned them and their thoughts less so they’re less revolting and them fading away would feel more justified.

ML also has a complicated relationship with his father and their relationship deteriorates towards the end of the book but the emperor just kind of dies and there’s no real feeling that either ML or the emperor had any emotional turmoil about this deteriorating relationship. It was again abit of a let down because it was portrayed in a way that both of them are not fully great but not fully bad towards each other but the emperor died without any resolution between them or any inner reflections to show their own emotions when this happened.

[collapse]

to end off, the romance was pretty good and overall the book was also fun to read. <<less

This is the most realistic novel I have ever read.

This is the story of the second life of a canon fooder in a book.
in previous life MC was canon foodder and younger sister was FL.
MC and little sister reborn.
But MC just wants a good marriage, she doesn't really care about revenge.

No excessive 'slap face' scenes.
No character with a hollow brain is constantly looking for trouble.

The younger sister in the previous life was pampered even in the second life remained weak and spoiled, not suddenly turning smart or evil by making use of past knowledge.
The MC in her previous life did have a strong, smart and rigid character, but she had bad luck because of his sister and husband's fault. They are only given a second chance, and their subsequent choices determine their own destiny.
really just a story of the life of a married noblewoman.

Fun light reading to increase knowledge, how women's lives after marriage are in the past

Pre-Review Notes:

  • Lots of cute dog food between a very capable FL who is 110% aware of her image as a good daughter-in-law but comes off as boring to potential suitors, and a very capable ML who bides his time to gain back his power.
    • They are a prime example of a power couple
    • Funny/light-hearted scenes galore. For ex, when the FL's ex-husband (from the previous life) and sister are newly married and people are like "don't be shy! Feed her!" etc, they're actually quite awkward, while the ML and FL are very natural in their chemistry and putting food on each other's plates on the other side of the table.
    • It's the way some of the characters are like "why does this girl and ninth uncle look like a couple?!" for me.
  • Politics are pretty easy to follow and nothing too intense/deep. So far the author has been developing the main lead's slow burn romance while dealing with family/courtyard drama and they just got together.
    • I think slow burn is a good descriptor because even though the main leads work together, have chemistry, and are comfortable around the other, the FL considers other dudes as a match because of her calculating personality. It never really crosses her mind that someone as powerful/up in the hierarchy as the ML would show interest in her. This comes off as frustrating at times, but I think the author's explanations through the FL's inner narrative were well-developed and eased that annoyance.
    • I've read other reviews that the writing has insignificant details, and while some points in the story were repetitive, I appreciated the way the author used the FL's narrative to explain her actions, schemes, etc. The descriptions of the setting made it a more immersive story for me, rather than one that's tightly focused on what the characters said/did.
  • I feel like I'm a hit/miss when it comes to imperial drama, (ex, I loved Rebirth of the Malicious Empress but was unimpressed by Eight Treasures Trousseau). I would say this one has a similar atmosphere as 8TT but things are better explained to the reader and the FL is more pro-active.

.....I wish that last chapter where the ML from the original timeline was reborn could be a sequel as well. I would read it!! This book was so hilarious and amazing. There were moments when I thought the MC was too cold, but then her character would be explained so well that it made sense. It would be completely weird if she wasn't detached. Her whole life she's been taught that the only things she can rely on are herself, power, & money. Why would she seek anything else? Those things like feelings aren't real to them. She has no experience with them. In that time marriage is the only freedom a girl may get. Seeing the MC go through it with a business mentality makes sense. Especially because she's determined to be the best wife and mother there is. I found her to be incredible strong and admirable.

This novel has a nice pace, I love the narrative the author uses and how she developes every situation. Despite having narrow-minded characters as villains or antagonists, those characters are well built and their lack of depth in personality is well justified by their upbringing and experiences so we don't see the usual villain schemes being played by them.

The Female Lead is a very flawed person but she put a lot of hard work into being apparently "perfect" and proficient in whatever that was required for noble ladies. She isn't... more>> a damisel in distress, even when she needs the help of others, but she isn't a Mary Sue either; the way men fall for her is a product of her own schemes but also of the way she's portrayed herself and how the plot evolves, not a magically unreasonable way.

The Male Lead has his own flaws but, despite everything, his thinking is quite advanced for the time and he is one to appreciate women and ackowledge their hard work, he isn't the usual "I am not going to look at any woman that's not the FL" per se. Don't get it wrong, once he's in love, he doesn't want any one else, but he constantly thinks about how he likes beauty and beautiful thinks, which is part of the reason he would be attracted to FL in the first place, and also makes him more believable than the usual sociopathic ML.

The story has back-yard drama but in a refreshing way, and also has court drama in a less non-stereotyped way. Is not too long and not too short, and it makes a really fun but also heartbreaking at times read. <<less

No rating yet, as I like to rate after a novel finishes (or after I drop it lol), but this one's pretty good!

As far as historical novels taking place in ancient China go, this one does a good job at realistically portraying the complexities and nuances of social etiquette and politics. The MC, Cheng Yujin, is an expert navigator and has successfully earned a flawless and peerless reputation of the "Ideal and Noble Young Miss" and, because the story is told through her perspective, we can see just how much... more>> work, effort, and pain is needed to earn that image. Yujin herself is a very calculating and self-aware person, so the analyses of gender expectations are even more pointed and accurate in this novel.

One of the "unique" parts of the novel's premise is the contrast between Yujin and her younger twin sister, Yumo, which highlights a looooot of cruel realities of human feelings and selfishness. It is especially so in regards to how the two sisters (nominally sister-cousins since Yujin gets adopted into a different branch) are treated in the Cheng family. It's a point that gets brought up many times, but the situations consider different issues so it doesn't grate on the reader's patience.

Also, some readers might have complaints of Yujin being hypocritical at times, which are all honestly very fair judgments. But I don't see this necessarily as a demerit, but rather it highlights Yujin as a believable character. She puts all of her efforts into ensuring her own future success and happiness and will do, say, and plot whatever means it takes to step towards that future. She doesn't have the luxury or privilege to pity/sympathize with others' situation if such an attitude would be detrimental to her. Again, it's hypocritical but it makes sense. She has no support from her family, so what does another person's situation mean to her? It's honestly a pretty refreshing take on a calculating female lead! It's one thing to see a character be blatantly a hypocrite, but it's another to see the situation surrounding the character that compels them to have this kind of behavior. It's not an excuse, but it explains things.

Spoiler

It's not mentioned in the novel's description, but Yujin is also flooded with "memories" of her past life in the form of dreams. While Yumo was reborn/regressed altogether, Yujin just "wakes up" from some vivid dreams. I'm a bit reluctant when such a plot point gets used, as sometimes these "memories" can be rendered pointless and have little to no effect on the plot, i.e. A character gets reborn but doesn't show signs of maturity derived from a full life already lived. Here, the effect can't be said to be small (one of the first events is Yumo confessing to her life-saving grace earlier, kickstarting the annulment) but it also can't be said to be big as from Yujin's perspective, these "memories" affect her thoughts more than her actions. Her past life serves more to provide reflection for Yujin than to compel her to make certain decisions. In this sense, the past life isn't as significant to the story's trajectory but still has an important place in the main character's personal growth.

What I'm saying is, the past life has a more emotional effect than a plot one. It's also refreshing and welcomed.

[collapse]

The court politics and drama is lacking here, but I have a suspicion they will come up later in the second half of the novel. So far, a very worthwhile read. 😁 <<less

I can't explain how much I love this novel, the translation quality is very good so is the storyline, the female lead is both sure of herself and her abilities but also full of sadness and loneliness, she has no one but herself and she understood that fact since very young... ... more>>
Spoiler

Her biological mother does not consider her as her daughter but that doesn't stop her from using the fact that she birthed our Cheng Yujin when it's useful to her. The twin sister is very useless and shallow, I can't stop thinking about the fact that if she said the truth of who was the first savior at the beginning instead of hiding it, our FL would have lived in her previous life.... it's also very clear that she is doted on, loved, but for some reason she does not see it and keeps comparing herself to Cheng Yujin, it's kind of hilarious to see considering the fact that as a reader we can even consider her to be a failed experiment, the polar opposite of our female lead. The adoptive mother is more concerned about her son, she is cold and unloving but to keep the apparences not dare to neglect the FL in terms of food, clothing, jewelry... because at the end of the day she is still her mother in name, however Cheng Yujin is not independent financially for the 1/5 of the story, she is not given money by her adoptive mother afterwards she will receive a part of her grandfather heritage and will finally be able to take further actions to protect herself. Almost the whole family is just greedy no one dotes on her, they see her as a disturbance (and those parts are actually quite hard to read, I feel really bad for our fl, when she enters a room and it becomes quiet, the fun seems to stop and she feels left out even though she doesn't show it... seeing her like this breaks my heart). The ex fiancee is completely useless and s*upid, I have nothing to say about him besides the fact that I'm very happy our FL will not marry him 😃😃 good luck to the sister though she will need it. The ninth uncle and male lead is discovered to be the Crown prince early on by the FL so there is no in*est... From the chapter I'm on the ML knows he is in love but our FL is still searching for a potential husband and hasn't thought of her feelings towards him as of now... The ML is very sweet and caring, he protects the FL very well and is always on her side☹️, during parties or family dinner.. he is taking care of our fl, discussing with her... allowing her to not feel left out and to be able to laugh truly and freely. He is very much the best for her!!!!! He is currently trying to take back his place as the crown prince as soon as possible to marry the FL (GOOD LUCK MY BABY!!). And finally our fl, ahhhh what can I say I love her.... she is truly amazing and astounding, she mastered the 4 arts perfectly, she is elegant, eloquent and intelligent, she knows when to pursue a matter or when to stop. She survived ALONE, by her talents and by pleasing the madams (even though it's merely admiration or acknowledgement of her talents and not love, but it allowed her to survive for so many years so she did what she had to do and no one can blame her for that). Because of the ML we can see the FL character developing, she always had to hide her emotion to always show the best of herself or else she will be even more despised but when she is with him she opens up (at first she was not like that but the more she stayed with him the more comfortable she became..) it's very obvious to see the difference in her behavior when she is around her family and when she is with Li Chengjing. But even though she is confident her sensibility is also shown multiple times, the mistreatment by her family as well as her previous life did and do hurt her a lot, she is not a stone, a person without emotions, she tries her very best to survive and I respect her very much for that. In all of the novel I've read this FL is one of the most human character, her arrogance and high self esteem is completely understandable considering that only her can love herself, the influence of her environment is visible, the mistreatment hurt her feelings but also changed her temperament, I can't stop thinking about the fact that if she wasn't adopted how would she turned out, would she be more care free ? Would she not research for a good husband to escape her family ? Would she finally express herself ?
Even though I haven't read the novel completely, it's still very good and I can't wait for the ML to take back his place and marry or at least became engaged to the fl, I could finally sleep knowing our baby is safe and has a high status.

The best novel in the genre Imo. Just the characters are so well written and both MC and ML have actual personalities but aren’t a**holes. This is a breath of fresh air from the typical characters and stereotypical plot you see in other novels. It isn’t really original but The characters and plot are pleasant enough that It makes It good

Awesome practical MC. One of the best ancient China novels I’ve read so far. Not so sure about the romance portion but I absolutely love the MC and how she views the world. Also the fact that she isn’t obsessed with ML at beginning instead she considers others with a realistic view of what marriage to them will be like. ML is ok.

This is my favorite chinese novel. No, I think this is actually my favorite novel of all the romance novels I've ever read. I'm just saying that it's so worth reading the 100+ chapters updated here, because you won't even realize but you'll already be there waiting for the next update. Lucky for you, this usually updates often and there are a lot of mass updates, and the translation is very good.

Cheng Yujin, aka FL, is basically much more realistic than the reborn ladies of noble families where everyone wants their death including their fiancé and they will make them all pay 1000 fold... Bla bla bla. Maybe this is because I see this type of character often that I like FL so much despite her personality flaws (She basically only cares about the benefits for her and won't give a d*mn if her choices affect someone else as long as they are a good thing for her reputation and life).

The plot twist which usually almost never happens in these stories is that SURPRISE!! the reborn one isn't Yujin but her twin sister, Cheng Yumo, who has an inferiority complex towards her because she lived in Yujin's shadow her whole life, the contrast between her and her sister being too apparent, even after the truth of the incident (who really 'saved' Huo guy, the ex-fiancé of FL) and thus after she was reborn she immediately revealed the truth and the engagement was called off for Cheng Yujin and was switched to Cheng Yumo, which damaged FL' s reputation which is why she's looking so seriously for a new husband who could let her climb high and live well.

FL and Cheng Yuanjing's (aka Ninth uncle aka Crown prince aka Male lead) meeting was when the Cheng family had to prepare a longevity gift for the Emperor (aka ML's dad) and since the emperor knew who ML but had to keep it secret he was especially excited about that gift. The Old Madam told Cheng Yujin to make adouble sided embroidery for the emperor but she had to embroider words that Cheng Yuanjing wrote, so there was a whole meet up where she had to practice her handwriting to look exactly like his... The emperor was satisfied, she got praised and so her reputation got much better. After that it gets tricky.

So, after that, there's a whole arc of well... Just getting to know each other more, until the Old Master Cheng dies, and there's a mourning period, but Cheng Yumo and ex-fiancé get married during mourning period. Cheng Yumo is very happy but she still feels the contrast between her and Cheng Yujin, and apparently she's not the only one because ex-fiancé is starting to get feelings and memories from his previous life (calling Yujin his wife, being jealous, recalling his marriage with Cheng Yujin). Around the same time second male lead I believe appear with his bratty son and 'falls in love' with Cheng Yujin and wants her to be his Second main wife (first wife dead, with the son and FL not wanting to cause their conditions are really too unreasonable), and a good thing happens too because male lead realizes his feelings towards FL.

The part of FL knowing what was supposed to happen originally is never really explained, so I don't really understand THAT special point of the character but I prefer to believe that because of Cheng Yumo's moves Yujin just adapted without knowing anything and the future changed.

I love both FL and ML. They just suit each other so much. Also, this isn't the kind of novel where EVERY MEMBER OF HER FAMILY WANTS FL'S DEATH, no, she's actually well-respected as the Eldest miss of the Cheng manor and her twin sister (whom I believe is supposed to be the antagonist) is way to weak and overall not a match for Yujin at all.

[collapse]

I love the plot, I love the main characters, and overall this is just one of the greatest novels I've ever read. Usually I get bored quickly but this is making me want to wait. Must give it a go. <<less

I really like the character of our FL. She is a go getter and do whatever it takes to achieve her goal. I admire her boss lady persona. She is the type of Mary Sue that I actually like - she's perfect in every way from her beauty to her intelligence to her deportment. But, and this is important - she's actually human and her perfection is logical. Other Mary Sues have fantastical abilities like being 16 and already a medical god or being assassin etc.

The ML is typical ML,... more>> but that's fine since there's no other defect in him. He is similarly as perfect as MC and also not some kind of wunderkid that's able to go to war since 10. His ability is perfectly confined in the realm of possibilities. I love their love and romance. ML love MC even when he know MC only love herself, and their closeness is logical due to their character. They don't make trouble with each other because they both respect each other. The antagonists are good. All these men and women bothering our MC and I love seeing them being slapped by MC just by her tongue. But I must say I DETEST the way author say nonsense things with no plot for paragraphs and I tend to skip lots of it. Sometimes things are repeated for several times with just slightly different wording. <<less

Ok, this story has a very surprising MC/FL when it comes on reflecting her "past life" - the memories she received (we can't surely tell its a past life or a dream about a possible future because there are several instances where she talks about it as something she saw rather than lived through) - and her attitude towards it.

Spoiler

Usually when a MC gets to know about her previous circ*ntances the novel turns into a crusade for vendetta or a quest for survival. But in this story despite that first scene where our FL snaps at her previous husband, we don't see her actively going after then... or even thinking about them that much. And later on she even comments on it during childbirth, that she only blames herself for her death, for leaving the decision over her life-and-death struggle to her previous mother in law, Huo Xue Shi. Yes, she has a bad opinion on Huo Chengyang, and yes, she is not all supportive of her sister. But there's no real hardfeelings. She is bigger than that.

[collapse]

Even towards her sister (which is not a mindless character, just incapable), that due to her inferiority complex keeps coming at our lead.

And I love this extremely capable couple, and how their interactions caused their feelings to grow in a very natural way. Chengjing, our ML, didn't like FL all that much in the beginning, but he reflects several times during the novel over how the changes on his opinion on her and it never feels forced, it feels logical. He is not a guy who randomly falls in love at first sight for the FL, and neither he is an overbearing character. What I love the most about him is about his deep respect for women, and there's a scene...

Spoiler

Some months into their marriage, when he rejects getting a cefei and asks her to trust him. She loves herself above all but he is still hoping that Yujin warms up and trusts/loves him, and so he tells why he wishes to only have her as wife. And the reason is not primarily love, but his respect for the women in his life. First - his mother (and we get to know her parents were in a monogamous relationship, and later on when she married the Prince Kang (current emperor) he only had her as a wife in the beginning), later on he was raised by Xue Shi, a scholarly and prideful woman that also refused marriage because she couldn't stomach the thought of concubinage. And so, because of that and other minor things, he knows how important a woman presence is, and that she shouldn't be taken lightly, and so taking concubines for no reason would be an insult to his wife.

[collapse]

And lastly, their journey never felt forced. The problems that existed never got erased by plot convenience. When she married way above her social standing, it didn't get smoothed out because the ML was there, but because of her attitude and hardwork.

Rather than a FL that has powerful godly beasts, amazing battle skills or an inhumanly brain that has all memories of her previous life down to what second this or that event happened and has to rely on it.... I love Yujin. She is the type of capable female that be on an ancient setting or modern life would be a succesful woman.

I hope more people will read this novel, and thank you for the translator for your impecable work!

Ps: I would have loved if the author wrote extra chapters on the other characters she "abandoned" through the novel, like Duke Zhai, Brother Lin and her sister/Marquis Hou. I felt that this would bring some closure to this characters that suddenly disappeared from the plot to the end of the story, even if in the beginning they were always actively brought into it. <<less

F*CK

I rarely make reviews, but it's usually when the novel is really really worth it. This. This is so f*cking worth it.

It starts of slow, but continues on a steady pace. The MC is smart and strong. Not because she's this magical OP person, but because she had to be. Sure, she was blessed with good looks, but so was her sister and many other ladies as implied in the novel.

She had to be strong. You know the feeling of a child wanting validation, so you continuously strive for it,... more>> and then slowly realising you will never receive it from those people. And only you can validate yourself? That's the MC. She learns things the hard way. It's not obvious mistreatment, but it's the slow grind on your heart, the constant disappointment and feeling let down by people who were supposed to support you in the little things. F*ck.

I arrived in chapter 53, and I had to put the novel down because I had to jump on here and make a review.

After reading how awesome the MC is, and the pressures that she still has to navigate, when she finally receives help she didn't ask for, her reaction made me tear up. Countless people have let her down. She learned to close herself off. Trusting no one. Second guessing good intentions, but smart enough to accept them as they come.

When the help finally arrives in the form of our ML, it doesn't diminish our MC's awesomeness at all. Rather, it's pretty freaking touching to see our MC feel secure enough to lean on someone. The relationship development between MC and ML sort of gave me some really severe Pride & Prejudice vibes. Like, the witty banter and stuff. The ML is sort of a Darcy and MC is definitely a Lizzy who's pretty sly when it comes to socialising.

Anyway, this novel hit me in all the right places and I cannot thank the translators enough for doing such an awesome job. <<less

I really appeetiated it.

It was a beautiful, logucal and emothional jorney for two people who only had each other.

You may be somehow frustraited with the FL mindset and how it doesnt change untill almeost the end of the story, but that was their reality... she has lived 14 years with it, just for her survival.. her only goel is to leave that damn house and to have a son and enough money.

At last I should say that its a gem, you gonna love it wholeheartedly.

This novel, OMG I love it. I love the FL and Ml, their love, I don't words to express their love. Lately I've been being very critical of what I read and sometimes I get to the point of not finishing what I'm reading, I thought it was because maybe I was bored to read, but I think it was just because I couldn't find good stories, I liked the story so much. Development of both protagonists, it was not an abrupt love but, a slow love, and when you... more>> realize both main characters already loved each other, adore how they evolved throughout the text; I liked it so much that I will read another novel by the same author. 5 stars excellent service <<less

MC is playfully pragmatic with a calm outer disposition. She has a very intelligent and humorous approach to her situation. She is skilled at turning conflicts around on the opponent. Her face slapping abilities are more elegant and subtle than most, often leaving others believing that she is the one that was wronged. She does not chase after revenge, only her own happiness.

The ML stands out as more reasonable than the average ML. He fits into a lot of cliche ML categories, but is not quite as arrogant. That's not... more>> to say he never gets angry, but he is a lot more respectful and dignified in his actions. The slow development towards a closer relationship between the MC and ML is very believable and pretty sweet.

MC's pursuit of various husband candidates is pretty amusing. Some might find it frustrating, but I see it differently. First of all, it shows she is very self aware. She knows what kind of options a woman in her era has, and so she carefully pursues what she determines to be the best path. Yes, it means the ML falls in love first, all while she still seems to be going after another man, but I think it's not that she has no interest in the ML, rather, because she is aware of the huge difference in their status' she does not allow herself to consider him a possibility.

Besides, not only does this situation give the ML motivation to act, but it also provides some of the main drama for the story. When you have such strong protagonists, scenarios like this allow for some excitement without detracting from the abilities and competence of the MC and ML.

This is an engaging story that seems to be setting itself up for a satisfying ending. <<less
