Wasn'r sure how to rate this by the time I finished it. It started as a 4-star rating in my heart (I really liked the first part), but the more I read, less unsure I became if it deserved 4 whole stars or not. As of now, I feel like 3.2 to 3.5 stars might be where is at, so I will round down.

Towards the end (not talking about the extras), it became a bit boring and some important scenes that they built up ended up with a rushed, blink... more>> and you miss it, result.

The extras still did not do much to make any kind of progress in the main couple's relationship (that brief, put there as an afterthought, fleeting kiss was super underwhelming).

I liked how funny, kind of sweet and chaotic this was in the beginning. I had fun reading every page. But they couldn't hold that kind of peace and comedic relief undertone. Even if the author wanted to write a serious conflict and some internal struggles and whatnot, I would have accepted it easily if it was done well. I would have even ignored all the rushed action, the useless back-forth, if we at least got some hand holding and a proper confession from them (the sword exchanging event in the extras did not do it for me, because the sword barely mattered at all the entire time, I even forgot they had them).

The ending, to me, was abrupt. The extras failed to deliver what I was looking forward to. End of the main story was meh, at best. I feel unsatisfied now that I am done with it.

However, if you are looking for a mindless short kind of fluffy story, go ahead. It is honestly not a bad novel, it's just that the work made me lose most of my entire interest by the end. I got my hopes up for the extras and those didn't do much for me at all. <<less

This book is the source of a great deal of second hand embarrassment for me, as the main character, a famed swordsman, spouts line upon line of cheesy pick up lines straight out of yellowing paper-backs featuring hot ripped men exposing their washboard abs, while holding another swooning individual in a passionate embrace (oddly specific I know).

Really makes you question the professionalism of this #1 Jianghu swordsman.

I oftentimes feel the need to burrow my face into a pillow and scream at their antics. Then afterwards, I always have a good... more>> laugh about it and wrap myself into a squirming burrito blanket.

But let's get back on point.

Zhao Jiangui, our MC (I'm so sorry (not) but I always read the pinyin as 见鬼 which translates to "what the hell", though his name probably, hopefully, has more elegant connotations), is a famed and skilled swordsman whose "swordsmanship is world-ranked, his appearance unrivaled, and the people of Jianghu say a swordsman of his match comes only [once] in one hundred years" (taken from chapter numero uno of the translation).

However there's been a rumor that the demon sect leader Ji Han, the scourge of the righteous factions, who ascended to the position after the death of the previous sect leader (his adoptive father), likes men. Or more specifically *waggles eyebrows* our MC, after a mole reported that he has a portrait of the MC in his possession, and hanging above his bed, no less.

Thus, the MC, who has absolutely no experience with the art of flirtation, is tasked with the job of. Seducing. The demon sect leader.

... whaaa-???

But luckily, the elders at the Haoren Alliance (which is like the martial group of righteous persons in their world?) have given him a book.

A BOOK OF ALL THE CRINGEWORTHY PHRASES YOU COULD POSSIBLY HOPE TO USE IN A LIFETIME.

And what ensues is pure hilarity and mounds of tear choked laughter from a very easily embarrassed me. Also a very embarrassed Ji Han and a totally unflinching Zhao Jiangui (seriously man, how do you even say stuff like that without blushing?).

Like what user Shadowdrop did doth sayeth, so far, the comedic side has shone through far more than any undercurrents of angst and drama. And I say huzzah to that! ヽ (´▽`) /

But I feel there's going to be more.

Spoiler

Hints of it are peeking through with the details like Ji Han's status as an adopted child and possible grab for power from the not-yet-appeared biological son of his adoptive father. Along with how the MC has been accused of mu*dering one of his friends.

So yeah, this story is probably not what it seems on the surface.

But ending on a happy note, there's a live action drama (but of course it's watered down version) and an audio book reading!! <<less

For now, it's more comedy than BL. Chapters are very short, so there is not much progress at this point. I'll rate after it's completed, but so far it looks good, around 4 stars probably.

Edit: OK, I was wrong, this novel deserves all 5 stars. But I cannot say much without spoiling, because the novel is very short.

Are you tired of evil Demonic Sect Leaders kidnapping and killing left and right in the name of "love"? Then this story is for you! Welcome to the land where love makes you a better person!

Here, people scheme and lie because of duty, but just want to be honest and good to each other : the righteous here is tasked with seducing the Demonic Sect Leader by his overly enthusiastic masters (they even wrote a very bad script for him), while the flustered Demonic Sect Leader just needs to deal... more>> with his own sect troubles.

It's short and simple but not simplistic. The characters inner dynamic is never lost and always makes sense. It might have been more memorable and unique if the story had taken the time to develop things properly, but it might also have lost some of it's breezy charm.

As it is, the awkward and innocent (and growing more and more sincere) flirting between two characters that respect and admire each other makes for a very funny and yet very touching story.

It has heart, and a good heart.

PS-Edit: The extras are not extra! I made the mistake of not reading them at first, and discovering them with Chichi's new translation. But they are like the real concluding ark of the story... Tss... "Extra"... it's like saying the Return of the King are extra chapters of the Lord of the Ring... <<less

cute, funny and with just a touch of mystery. It's better than half the fluff available here on NU and there are some very real moments in between all the light-hearted antics. Neither MC no ML are total idiots, though neither are very experienced when it comes to love and their fumbling will make you smile. It's not a long story even by danmei standards and the end seemed a little bit abrupt. Another chapter or two would have fleshed it out better IMO.

also, I think the drama version turns... more>> them into brothers instead of lovers and it sort of goes in a different direction than the novel; censoring and all that stuff. I can see fans of the novel version getting a bit irritated at the production company. <<less

Ended too soon but it's absolutely hilarious and moving. Weird combination. I know. But it's a light hearted comedy with a plot that somehow works really well.

The extras are great. They complete the story. Btw there's 40 of them and still only have a kiss Wuwuwu. But it's very sweet~ They are very cute together.

It's a short, sweet, and cute novel, not meant to be taken too seriously. I wouldn't call it an A+ masterpiece of literature or anything, but it has good callbacks, nice comedic timing, a rounded-off plot, no problematic areas to speak of, and actual relationship acknowledgement. I have no complaints. I also don't want to talk more on it, since it is so short, and therefore easy to spoil. I'll admit that I once gave the novel a 3-star rating because I wanted more meat to it, but after reading... more>> some heavier novels, I've come to appreciate the lighthearted cuteness more. It's good for cleansing the soul.

And as a now-translator for it, I also appreciate how easy it was to knock out. Helped me get out of a writer's block rut I could feel coming on. I have to give it 5 stars out of appreciation, at this point. <<less

Update: Looks like new (better) translator is in the mix, so highly recommend that and not the earlier ones. I'll probably update this review if I reread this later with the new translation

--- original review pf [[allourheroes]] translation ---

Very funny novel, but regretfully, the translation is somewhat of a mess. I thank the translator for their efforts but inconsistencies all of over place make it very difficult to enjoy the novel without getting booted out of the story every other sentence.

Spoiler

Pinyin like "senior brother" or "doctor" are completely untranslated, with no footnotes. Half of the titles (like literally what the character's position is in the sect) are untranslated too.

I understand Chinese and can sometimes decipher distorted pinyin, but it's impossible for regular readers to attribute any meaning to pinyin when it's pinyin. Pinyin is not English, it's a sound that has no inherent meaning in English.

Frankly, it's the same as leaving actual Chinese letters hanging around in the text, it has the exact same effect.

I'd even prefer Chinese characters because at least I'd know what they mean instead of pinyin where it could have 34 other possibilities.

[collapse]

Ending was somewhat of a big mess of confusion as well.

I suppose the focus was on the humor/romance so none of the plots really mattered to the storyline, somewhat of a shame.

The ending sounded just like the beginning with nothing that actually changed. Author dropped or left a ton of loose ends to percolate in the background. <<less

This was the first novel I read and I wasn't left disappointed. I must say that the first time I read this, I probably didn't understand everything perfectly (I didn't even finish reading the extras), but the second time I knew that this novel could have a special spot in my heart (I also increased my rating). There's an audio drama for this novel and the voice actors did a good job, they made me emotional and scream, but reading it still hits different.

Zhao Jiangui is the MC,... more>> the first ranked in Jianghu, a righteous hero who fights the evil and protects others, while Ji Han is the ML, the new leader of the Demonic Creed, the opposite of an "hero", one would say, but is in reality not that evil.

Zhao Jiangui was asked to seduce Ji Han to protect the Alliance from being attacked by the Demonic Creed after a spy deduced that Ji Han was pining after Zhao Jiangui, but they were so wrong. They are both straight men or I should better say that they are both so engrossed with their role and swordsmanship that they never experienced what is real love (luckily they'll fall for each other).

But what I thought was a fluffy/comedic novel turned to have a little angst too... It was kinda painful for me, my heart shattered many times, but I think it was necessary and I actually loved this feeling (I'm not masochist.)

Zhao Jiangui, from being stiff and reciting every single line in that damn book (it was really funny actually) to being a natural flirt was so satisfying to watch. He needed to make the other one fall in love, but he fell first (and harder), dumb Zhao Jiangui!

Spoiler

The moments when he started feeling guilty about "lying" to Ji Han? Exquisite. He started really caring for Ji Han and questioning himself if what he was doing was really considered good and at the end he chose to stay at Ji Han's side even after being deceived himself. The first kiss scene was bittersweet, like the way Zhao Jiangui said that he knew why that book didn't explain how to kiss was so??? But right after this beautiful moment, angst happened.

[collapse]

Ji Han, my sweet and tsundere Ji Han, was actually so baby? I don't know how to explain it, but he really gave me the "need to be protected" vibe, I really felt so bad for him, but oh boy, I was kinda fooled.

Spoiler

He knew what Zhao Jiangui was trying to do when he first approached him and all: at the beginning he kept playing with him, but at one point he started opening himself and he was really genuine when saying stuff about himself. He really wanted to be with Zhao Jiangui, but still needed to follow his father's instructions as a Creed Lord, so he couldn't help but pretend to stab Zhao Jiangui's back.

[collapse]

I'm leaving this quote from the book: "There was an expanse of chaos in his mind. He almost didn't realize what he himself had said, merely thinking that if Ji Han wasn't the Demonic Creed Lord, and he wasn't a Hero of the righteous faction, that would be nice."

At the end, I recommend this novel if you want a light-hearted, funny read with just a bit of angst. Also read the extras because they aren't extras at all!! <<less

TL;DR: Cheesy wuxia romcom with surprisingly heartfelt moments, though ultimately too forgettable to warrant a higher rating.

I feel a bit sorry for giving this novel a measly three stars, as I'm actually quite fond of it. It's perfectly inoffensive; a sweet little story with bite-sized chapters that you can get through in a single day. It's funny, it's romantic, it has sword fights and intrigues. And yet, I'm not sure I'd recommend it blindly.

What is "The Wrong Way to a Demon Sect Leader" about?

WWDSL is a wuxia romantic comedy about... more>> the legendary swordsman Zhao Jiangui, who is tasked by the righteous factions to infiltrate the warring demonic sect by seducing its cold-hearted leader, Ji Han.

Here's the catch: Zhao Jiangui is socially inept and as charming as a dead fish. The reason he was given this task in the first place is that, according to secret intel, Ji Han has the hots for him. Thus, equipped with a book of terrible pickup lines, Zhao Jiangui embarks on a journey of espionage and self-humiliation.

Here's the second catch: The rumors were just rumors, and neither Ji Han nor Zhao Jiangui are gay. This doesn't stop Zhao Jiangui from pursuing his original plan, however, much to Ji Han's annoyance. Hijinks ensue.

As the story progresses, a genuine connection develops between them against all odds - but with conspiracies abound and increasing pressure from their respective factions, their budding relationship seems doomed, betrayal unavoidable. Will they be able to overcome these obstacles and be true to each other?

(Of course they will. It's a romcom.)

What is WWDSL really about?

Forget the side characters (this won't be hard) and the somewhat lackluster political intrigue that kicks in midway through the novel. Thematically, it doesn't have much to offer either, beyond a shallow exploration of "man vs society" and what it means to be happy. WWDSL is a very light read, mostly told through breezy dialogue. I wouldn't recommend it, if you are in search of something substantial - though with a bit more depth, I think it could have been a far more satisfying experience.

As it stands, it's a quick-paced comedy, albeit a bit hit or miss, and many of the initial chapters feel more like the script of a 4koma comic than part of a novel. When the jokes land, they are really funny, and Chichi does a great job at conveying the humor in her translation. But no matter how good the comedic timing, the cheesy pickup lines get old quickly and I wouldn't blame anyone for finding a decent chunk of WWDSL's first half to be repetitive, grating or vapid. There's no tension and the story mostly stumbles from one gag to the next while paving the ground for the significantly more dramatic second half.

But what WWDSL is really about (and where it truly shines), is the steadily developing romance between the two main characters, one that is surprisingly believable and organic. There's a real sense of progression and we get to understand how and why they fell in love with each other. While this would seem like a basic requirement for any romance novel, I found this quality to be absent from many works, and it certainly takes skill to execute convincingly. I must be honest, despite the silly premise their relationship feels more authentic to me than, say, whatever is going on in "Heaven Official's Blessing", which is often touted as The Ultimate romance in danmei circles.

So even though certain developments in the second half of WWDSL are cliched and a bit melodramatic, it works for me, because the author succeeds in getting us invested in these characters. Both Ji Han and Zhao Jiangui are eccentric, yet grounded enough to feel human. Particularly Ji Han is a fun male lead - though introduced as talented but haughty, the story reveals him to be a prickly wet cat of a man who is buckling under his responsibilities as the new sect leader and the pressure to appear more mature than he really is.

When Zhao Jiangui finds out that Ji Han liked tanghulu as a child and sets out to find some for him, it's no grand romantic gesture, it's rather mundane, really - but Zhao Jiangui's clumsy attempts at consoling Ji Han, and the latter's embarrassed response to it... there is something real about that. These characters have no romantic experience, their attempts at courtship are often awkward and misguided - but they try so sincerely that even the worst pickup line turns meaningful eventually. What a shame then, that the novel ends rather abruptly right when they find a way to express their feelings authentically and get together. I actually would have liked to see a bit more of them.

Now, I don't mean to portray their relationship as more profound than it is - ultimately WWDSL is still a very tropey work that doesn't take itself too seriously. But there's just something so charming about watching these two maladjusted people bumble about and do their best.

Apologies for getting a bit sentimental here: but I think that's what being human is all about.

Final Verdict

WWDSL is a cozy novel (novella?) that makes up for its lack of depth by constructing a solid romance. The reason for my rating is that it's ultimately nothing special and not something I could recommend without caveats: the plot is kind of forgettable, the gags can get annoying, its literary merits are dubious at best - but it's a good pick if you're in the mood for something silly that still pays off.

A simple, honest story with a lot of heart - sometimes that's all you need. <<less

It's almost there. I had a good time reading it, but not to the point of loving it.

I was surprised to know this novel was adapted to a webdrama, but I was also not surprised since the story was written quite loosely and it's indeed suitable for a drama script adaptation.

First of all, out of all the novels of the same sort (specifically, the martial arts trope) that started out as pure comedic comedies I've read so far, this is the only novel that didn't take a sharp... more>> turn and become overly dramatic or play with the reader's emotions and tear ducts halfway through the story.

The story is short, cute, and sweet. It has good comedic timing. Despite the somewhat loose plot, the dynamic between the main characters can still keep you engaged from start to finish. The characters' fumbling inexperience in love was also something that put a smile on my face. It's lighthearted and enjoyable. A good choice for anyone looking for a cute novel that's quick and easy to read. <<less

a short and fun read! My rating suffered from my own irrational expectations, but don't let those three stars discourage you from reading this if you're looking for something light to pass some time with. With 100+ extremely short chapters, even if cultivation stories aren't your cup of tea, you can still get a chuckle or two out of this.

the story of seasonal chill (thank you chichi for the shorter name alternative) is one of a righteous sect's hero who 'invades' a demonic sect by unsuccessfully? seducing its new, sexy... more>> leader, because the righteous guys thought this was a fool-proof, well thought-out, plausible plan. The short novel is filled with cheesy lines and flirting attempts that turn genuine at some point, and the plot of the struggle of power in the demonic sect is one that doesn't get shown out to its full potential. In fact, that is what was nagging at me enough to give seasonal chill an 'ok' rating of three stars. It'd be fine if the focus was solely on the comical, budding romance, or if that took the backseat to the story of the strife within the demonic sect and the one within the martial arts world in general, but the shortness of the novel doesn't allow for either plotpoint to develop very satisfyingly. I wish the author had either made this long enough that you could really connect with the characters or that the focus was solely on the romance part.

still, for something that only takes around two hours to read, just the fact that the plot can make you laugh, and even goes to pose the question of morality of those who claim to be moral themselves, really is enough. Plus the ML is a cutie;; I don't regret reading this! <<less

I love me some demon lord with a sweet tooth and an sweet heart. Ji Han found his perfect match with our righteous baby Zhao Jiangui ❤️

It wasn't a very heavy read and any form of light "angst" didn't last long. For something so short the plot and characters were well thought out. Even the side characters had enough meat on them for readers to identify with them.

Overall lovely read. Delivered what it was meant to deliver.

This (short) story clearly doesn't take itself seriously, and the author does a wonderful job conveying that from day 1. What they were trying to convey was conveyed, quite clean-cut and simple. If the slap-my-knee comedy in this novel doesn't give you stitches, I don't know what will. Some "heavier" plot unfolds around ch 65 or so, and while it wrapped itself nicely and pretty quickly, some plot twists could do with more clues thrown in, subtle or not.

Both protagonists have their own quirks, and the feelings for each... more>> other that grew organically from scratch were clear as day, even if they were never very physically intimate. The trust they hold for each other is incredible and touching! The side characters were very entertaining but underdeveloped, and I couldn't get very invested in the side couple. I also felt "meh" toward antagonists, but at least they had motives.

Spoiler

What started off as the ultimate comedy tool ends up becoming much more romantic by the end and like a "secret only the two know", and I thought that was such a smart and clever choice to close the story! Best full circle of 2021.
