I’ll Be the Male Lead’s Sister-in-Law

Description

Today, I am a substitute for your fiancee. Tomorrow, I’ll become your sister-in-law!

Mu Mingtang is the substitute of the male lead’s first love. After she lost her family, she was adopted by the Jiang family and eventually became engaged to the male lead, the Prince of Jin.

Understanding very well that she was only a substitute, she removed her claws and fangs and turned herself into an imitation of the Prince of Jin’s first love. She couldn’t speak or laugh as she wished, she was prepared to live in the shadow of another woman for her entire life… until one day, the real Miss Jiang returned.

The real Miss Jiang was reborn. When she learned that she was the male lead’s first love, she immediately returned to fight for her engagement and identity.

In order to please his first love, the Prince of Jin gave the substitute to the Prince of Qiyang, who had become a dying madman. She was just a low-quality fake, anyway. If she dared to anger his first love, he would turn her into a childless and powerless widow for the rest of her life.

Mu Mingtang, the target of their mockery, finally snapped: Okay, since you gave me to another man, I’ll make you bow and call me sister-in-law!

However, none of them expected the Prince of Qiyang, the God of War, to actually wake up!

Xie Xuanchen is the son of the late emperor. The whole world once trembled beneath his feet, but one day, for a reason unknown to even Xie Xuanchen himself, his nature suddenly changed. He became cruel and bloodthirsty, leaving his father with no choice but to pass the throne to his uncle.

Eventually, Xie Xuanchen was unable to resist the illness and fell into a coma.

When he woke up again, there was a beauty standing before his bed, looking at him in surprise. Then, for the sake of his domineering little princess, he revived his name as the God of War, reclaimed the throne, and united the world.

I once captured the world to satisfy my own ambition. Now, you are the reason for my ambition.

Finished thru Google translate, which is quite understandable.

The start was quite rough for me, I didn't have as much engagement and interest to it but continued because I've read worse. One can already see where the story's headed, so I just went for the ride. I've commented in one of the chapters that I know there will be a huge crash and I just want to jump through to the wreckage, and still stand by it after finshing that whole thing.

Not sure if this is part of a series of... more>> novels which feature a book, or them being depicted as characters of a book (hello, Inception lol), but that theme felt too forced here. The begonias were even well-embedded in the storyline than that darned book IMO. And with it being only made known to a deluded, self-centered, quite s*upid character (really quite mindless to think so narrowly) facing a ML that turned out to be overpowering, the effect was totally diluted.

If you are after romance, this burned quite slow, there are hints here and there of the blossoming romance, but it isn't till the latter chapters that things finally got going in their relationship. Love scenes are only suggestive, sorry smut lovers, lol. Perhaps if there were any satisfying/memorable moments for me, it was

during the celebratory banquet where ML explained to his subordinate why he didn't need to take a concubine. For an Ancient China setting, such idea regarding respect and relationships is very novel indeed.

.

I don't want to dwell too much on the characters, they were ok. Villains were a joke, the MCs don't need to do much to shine in the story. It was an ok time waster that fared just a bit under my expectations after reading I Became the Stepmother of My Ex-Husband. It's a hit and miss for me for this author, so I will be more selective of reading any more stories from him/her/them. <<less

A good read. The premise of the story was slightly different to what I imagined, but it's quite similar with this author's other novels. In all of the stories I've read so far (including Greetings, Ninth Uncle and It's Better to be the Empress Dowager), the reborn character / character with golden fingers often doesn't succeed because they fail to realize that people are not characters in a book and circumstances are ever changing.

I like the relationship between the MC and ML, and the development of their relationship was quite... more>> entertaining. There was a lot of silly misunderstandings, but since both were rather innocent when it came to romance, it made sense. Their bantering was quite cute as well. The MC is quite refreshing as a character, she seems more realistic and human than most characters in C novels.

The relationship between Prince Jin and the original Miss Jiang in this second life time was also very interesting to read about. As always, actions have consequences, and the grass is always greener on the other side.

As others have mentioned, the ending seems a bit rushed. It seemed like the author decided to just summarize what happened and write some extra chapters instead. I really liked the extra chapter about their first lives though! <<less

I really like this novel. I have read 3 of this author's work before this one. I really love 2, including Greetings, Ninth Uncle, and I became the Stepmother of my ex-husband, but I dropped one of her novel because of the annoying fl.

The FL doesn't have any gold fingers, she was not reborn nor transmigrated. She is just earnest and honest. She fits well with the cute ML.

The girl that was reborn.... more>>

She could have considered that the protagonist of the story is not the man, but Mu MingTang. Because she came back to take her own place as Prince Jin's fiancee, the plot changed and it still favored Mu Mingtang instead of the Prince Jin.

It's a good read. Though I have been on a broken engagement trope binge lately. So I may be biased.

MC (Mu Qingtang) and ML (Xie Xuanchen) are both considered "people to get rid off" by their respective families. MC is adopted by the Jiang family as a stand in for their runaway daughter. ML was supposed to be crown prince before he goes "insane" and is replaced by his uncle. Crazy really since he is described as emperor terminator in the novel because he had killed 3 ŕŕè.

They get married... more>> and MC tries her best to live. She knows if ML dies, she won't have a good ending either. But she also feels thankful, ML has saved her during the war. So, taking care of him is also a form of repayment for her, as he represents hope to her.

ML isn't really motivated at first, he keeps thinking of sending MC away as he feels death approaching. He tries to not kill. He doubts himself and at the start you can feel that he's depressed and wants to die. Though this changes gradually with the interactions between them (MC & ML).

His illness:

Spoiler

He gets much better once he learns that he was poisoned.

Their relationship:

Spoiler

It's cute but at some point he has to stop lying to her. Acting pitiful will just make it awkward for everyone witnessing it. And considering his prestige as the God of War, I wonder if this is why the author put this in. To make ML feel like the better choice. A man who can put his ego down to please his wife eventhough it might hurt his image.

Intimate Scene chapter 96 (tw:dubcon)

Spoiler

I honestly thought it was when he won the bet with her. But nope. It was done later. He was very drunk and she resisted. Although he apologized and treated her well after the scene, it still left a bad taste with me. This was completely unnecessary, as the whole experience didn't affect their relationship.

Antagonist/Cannon fodders:

Honestly felt like a straight line really. The motives are clear, but I wished the author elaborated when his uncle started having those thoughts. You don't wake up one day and decide to mu*der your brother and nephew for the throne.

Some Cannon fodder like the Empress Dowager and Empress are just not that important. I'm also confused as to why Mrs Jiang is trying to be her best to MC, when they both know the connection is broken the minute they traded MC's marriage for Mr Jiang's new post.

The extra:

Spoiler

3rd timeline with MC having memories from the first timeline, she's 9 now. This one was cute, as MC and ML meet when they were younger. MC at 9-10 and ML at 13-14. There's multiple reincarnated individuals in this extra.

Spoiler

The part where XXC stabs himself in order to not hurt the MC rlly got me. That one line that was like “He’d be willing to drink a drug that he knows is addictive, all for that one person to not worry” I cried so hard! It was kinda angsty and sad at the beginning

[collapse]
but around chapter 150 or so the translation quality dropped to mtl level. The writing and translation before chapter 150 was so good! The translation conveyed the message fully and it was beautiful, I’ve cried at least 5 times. It’s kinda like filler-ish after 150 and the translation is pretty hard to read and doesn’t convey the lines as well but it’s still good just not that amazing to read anymore. Might change my mind later on after I finish the novel. I’m giving a 5 for the beginning of the novel, it was truly one of the best I’ve read. <<less

This was such an annoying read. The author is already repetitive & long winded. Then the translator minced the chapters.. &Amp; finally mtl was so painful to read. I would have enjoyed the story so much more without these glaring issues.

The main couple is really great. Stuck together through thick & thin. It's a slow burn though. My negative is the dub-con on their first night.

I loved this novel. The characters, setting, world building, pace.I mtled it but will definitely reread again. I especially loved the ending where it was ironic wordplay of the title. Who was the story referring to as the male lead and the sister in law?... more>>
Spoiler

While reading the novel we will see from the perspective of rebirth character Miss Jiang, Prince of Jin is the ML and so our MC is the sister in law of ML in this life but in this timeline the real ML is Prince of Qiyang and Miss Jiang is the sister in law of the ml.

[collapse]
I loved that, it deserve +1 star for this assemble.

A slight twist to rebirth character. She wanted to change her tragic life to a happier one and in doing so alter the whole future. But thanks to her our main character of this story could shine through and rise from their lows.

Of course there are schemes but the main characters are honest and would rather play straight then do roleplays and use underhanded means.Of course they do so beacuse ML is powerful enough by himself and needs only his tangtang.

Little summary:Our ML Chen was schemed and was just waiting for his death. The MC through a turn of luck is married to her fiancee's cousin, a sick person who was considered to be dying anytime but she accepted it.
This amazing twist of fate brought them together.

Their love : They have mutual respect and unending love and trust towards each other, no misunderstanding. The pace is also good, it doesnt feel forceful and I thoroughly enjoyed their love story. The ML is a powerful person, everybody is scared of him. But this big dude is actually a devoted husband to his wife and doesnt does whatever she says. He even acts spoiled and sick so that his wife can feed him.
Spoiler

Even the maid says that when the madam is angry the prince is sick. This was so funny to me

[collapse]
This makes everybody around him having mix feeling.

Reading through the story sometimes kept me wondering how in previous life our mingtang was living just blending with her environment
Spoiler

she said herself that she would be the perfect substitute. She would live in shadow and keep acting all her life. Maybe by doing so she was able to keep her title of queen in her last lifetime. She didnt love Prince Jin so it didnt matter the harem. But acting throughout her life must tire her out, I felt quite distressed by this

[collapse]
but in this life she can be herself and there is no need to pretend.

Their past
Spoiler

The ML was a powerful warrior but after a violent maniac episode where he supposedly mu*dered many soldiers the ML Prince of Qiyang was kept under home arrest and chained by his father, then emperor. After the emperor sudden death his uncle became the emperor. He was chained and bed ridden.

She was a merchant's daughter had wonderful childhood but in times of war their homeland was attack, parents were mu*dered. She became refugee and had hit rock bottom, struggledto eat and live on but strived through it when Jiang family adopted her and kept her as substitue. She being on road was quick to adapt.

How they met
Spoiler

During wartime in her homeland the young warrior that brought peace to the nation was Prince of Qiyang and the young Mingtang was in love with her saviour since then She went towards the saviour direction in tiny bit hope of meeting him and on her marriage night found him to be her husband. She cared for him and the ML also considered her dearly beacuse at that time when everybody was against him she was there for him

[collapse]

About rebirth Miss Jiang.I dont know what to feel about her. She isnt pitiful enough nor is villainess enough. She was never satisfied with her life.
Spoiler

In her first life she eloped with her then love to another kingdom. Though she wasnt the main wife she was beloved concubine in that lifetime but was mu*dered. She heard about her childhood love's achievement and her substitute being king and queen, living their life and she was jealous.

After her rebirth she was determined to have that life so she escaped that nation went back to her country and married her childhood love. And she became the queen through all twist and turn. But did she get her happy life ? No she wasnt happy in this life too.

She, as any youngster was also infatuated with that powerful warrior Prince of Qiyang and wanted same life as Mintang where her husband was loyal to her but contrary to it she watched as her husband brought many concubines and wondered how Mingtang felt in her previous life as she watched the harem.

In her last minute she looked back, her husband and his beloved concubine escaped leaving her, she remembered the young warrior and Mingtang and committed su*cide.

[collapse]

The villian
Spoiler

No surprises, the villian was the emperor. He killed his brother, the ml'sfather and also his doctor. He drugged the ML while pretending to be a kind uncle. Disguishing his medical treatment but in fact drugging him to have maniac episode and waiting for him to die.

[collapse]

The ending: I loved it. Like I said the wordplay in the title made me thrilled. And also
Spoiler

the story ended when ML was titled Prince of Qiyang that our MC loved. If there is another opening it wont be with that title but he will be emperor. Most story will end when the ML became emperor but this ends at the last day of ML as the beloved Prince of Qiyang. They have a son and he is mini version of his father but his father is teaching him how to use his strength properly so he doesnt hurt his mother. Lol

A very good reading. The plots are not too dense and complicated. It’s a straightforward story about two people who overcome their past and together support each other for the better.

There’s not much drama between MC and ML, only ML pretending to be sick, so that MC would pamper him like a baby 😂 and he only sees MC in his eyes.

The only complain I have is ML is sooo OP that he could win many wars so easily. The only strategy I think ML deployed and explained in detail... more>> is during the first war. Then the rest are explained quite sloppyly. It seems like the author want to conclude everything but done in a rush. The same thing also happened in the extras. I quite enjoyed the extras but the author ended the story of the third life abruptly.

One of the novel that I will reread after all chapters have been translated. <<less

Classic September Flowing Fire quality: MC gets wronged but claps back, wronged side characters linger around to be face-slapped for way too long, MLs are top-quality, and ancient setting.

Mu Mingtang is a decent MC; she's a merchant girl who went thru awful historical events (lost her parents in an invasion, was a refugee for a year or so, got forced into being a substitute for a noble girl).

ML is god of war BUT he got schemed/poisoned and went from the peak to the abyss and was basically in a near... more>> vegetative state when MC got married to him (an official basically sold MC for a higher position). MC realizes ML saved her back in her hometown and no longer fears him but is instantly, unswervingly on his side.

Strongest parts of this novel: the absolute cute relationship between MC and ML.

ML is DOTING, pampering, and likes to act coquettish. The amount of dog food these two fling from almost day one of their relationship is   . ML has somewhat of a personality. MC and ML are refreshing in that they don't really let themselves be bound by all the stifling rules of the ancient setting. The novel never gets boring. Has a lot of funny moments.

Weak parts of the novel: the face slapping is too tedious and obvious. The sweet CP kind of stops after MC and ML bang. The author seems to be like, well, f*cking can just take the place of all the sweet gestures in the relationship right? Just need to write "MC was tossed all night and weak/sleepy for days after" over and over zzzzzzz. And then the novel kind of wrapped up a little too fast with very little CP focus
Spoiler

with all the conquest dynasty stuff

[collapse]
. All characters other than MC and ML are kind of weak. I especially rolled my eyes over Jiang Mingwei and Xie Xuanji being childhood sweethearts blah blah blah and then XXJ showed not an ounce of interest or kindness to JMW at all. Okay okay, only the MC and ML are allowed to have love or any positive characteristics at all zzz.

Anyway, not as strongly written as Greetings, Ninth Uncle <<less

AHHHHH this novel was so gooood

The politics weren't overdrawn and the relationship between the FL and ML were set at a good pace. Both the ML and FL trusted, depended, and loved each other and it happened very naturally that it made me want to cheer them on. They did have some trivial misunderstandings but most of the time, they were honest and straightforward towards each other. I love how the FL never gave up on the ML and stayed by his side while helping him recover. I also love... more>> how the ML only loves the FL and would often act like a baby to her even in public lololol Both the leads were likable and very humanlike (aside from how OP ML actually is) so it was such a good read.

Also, the fanwai is definitely a must-reaaad! Over-all a fluffy and slightly dramatic romance story that u can read when you're bored from studying hehe 10/10 <<less

Very good! A very very good ML and FL. They're both straighforward and more resilient than others. FL is not mary sue, ML is part gary sue-ish but he has his downsides too (like being addicted to acting like a baby or aggravating a minor minor injury to seek comfort from his wife- omg! Such a cutie)

No dogblood dramas even the "villains" are not so annoying conpared to most CN ofnyhe same genre. Hahha

Cant find the extras tho.

This novel has plot dynamics that I really like, with the hero thats very dark and full of scars falling in love with naive sweet heroine. The cold ML slowly melt and become so clingy with the FL. Lol

I have no words to explain how I feel after finishing such a beautiful novel, I came to read this novel after reading another novel by the same author, if I remember correctly the title is something like "I married the ninth uncle" after reading the 1st novel, I liked it so much that I looked for more works by the same author, if the story of the ninth uncle and his niece fascinated me, the story of Xie xuanche and Mu Mintang loved it, it is not a cloying... more>> novel that only focuses on only problem, no gentlemen. This talks about growth as people, about how life can hit you and the important thing is to get up, I will not deny that this novel made me reflect a lot about the life we want and what life gives us, the clear example is Xie Xuanche who He had everything when he was born and when he grew up he achieved even more, but then he fell, and it is as the saying goes, the higher you are, the worse the fall, the same happens with Mu Mintang, pampered by her parents and then saw herself in the Needing to mature from the war, of course Mu Mintanga overcame his darkness earlier while Xie xuanche does it step by step throughout the entire novel. <<less
