This ones a bit difficult to write about. I hate to do priest and bugui dirty. The translator, as usual, is absolutely amazing.

Plot: 6/10

As always, priest puts great thought into her novels. The premise was fresh and unique and worldbuilding, altho wordy was interesting enough. However, the ending was way too rushed. That is the only thing that ruined it for me, very anti climatic. There was a buildup of hope and the climax did not come thru.

Spoiler

literally the whole book was about ending utopia and they concluded it in one line

[collapse]

MC: 9/10

HOO BOIIII the summary did not lie. First meeting, su qing is a depressed youth who has no skills and seemingly, no common sense. What follows is his growth, now there are some people saying the change was too sudden. But honestly? He was under immense psychological duress?? All his bravery, wit and later, his lying and trickery was a trauma response. And well written at that. Priest explores the impact of his trauma on himself and his relationships very well.

ML: 11/10

I am a hu bugui stan first, human second. Awkward, clumsy but so wholly in love and so tender and gentle. Hes my dream man and im into girls. I like how his personality differs in his work and in his personal life. Does not go into the overused domineering, overbearing gong area and I am grateful.

Side characters: 8/10

Im being very generous. I was missing my Chang Dou x Fang xiu crumbs. I really was. I feel like that could have made things more interesting. Tutu is precious little brat. The RZ members werent fully developed. Honestly, it was a bit lacking.

If youre a fan of priest, id really recommend her other novels instead. This is very much a one time read <<less

The main thing I have to say about this novel is trust the summary. I was so vexed when I started reading because I felt like the summary didn't adequately explain the sci-fi nature of the setting or story, or accurately depict other characters and the romance either. It's a confusing novel right off the bat, which might lead some to drop it after the first ten chapters or so, but, and I cannot stress this enough: keep that simplistic little summary in mind and keep reading. If you do,... more>> you'll begin to understand that this novel, its entire point and purpose, is a character study and depiction of the main character's life with all its ups and downs. Everything else is background noise. That doesn't mean the plot isn't engaging, or the romance isn't achingly sweet, or there aren't several other secondary characters who aren't interesting and fun; this book has all those things and more. But I think it's important to see that everything that happens takes place to drive the main character into corners, or get him out of them. You could argue that that's how a lot of books are written, but it definitely feels different and more specific in Zhongji Lanyin, which does affect the reading experience and led to initial confusion for both myself and I think other readers.

That being said, I think this novel is just amazing. Mo Du is my favorite work by priest from a technical standpoint, but I think Zhongji Lanyin just might have beat it out from a purely emotional one. Su Qing is an exquisite main character - how could he turn out not to be with so much focus and care paid to him, honestly - and everything he does feels precise and well thought out. Whether or not I agreed with his choices or his grudges or emotions, I fully understood them, so I was able to love him even if I didn't necessarily like him all the time. The side characters are absolutely amazing too, but get ready for a... lot of pain on that front, honestly. And Hu Bugui, our ML, oh! What a glorious match he made with Su Qing. His upstanding nature and devotion to Su Qing was so heartbreaking and sweet, especially considering all the initial hardships he caused Su Qing that brought such disparity in their relationship, and his deep emotionality was such a good counterpoint to Su Qing's carefully cultivated analytical mindset. He made me cringe a lot with his awkward but well-meaning behavior, but in a way that endeared him to me all the more. Those two really, really deserved their happy ending - I'm so thankful they got it!

Is this a perfect novel? No. It's not one of priest's best works, speaking from an overall perspective, but I think it deserves a lot more recognition for the incredible character development the author explored and utilized here, especially considering (in my opinion) that really is the whole point of the book! I really highly recommend this one, and that's coming from someone who doesn't usually enjoy even a hint of sci-fi in her books! <<less

Another enjoyable read!✨ (≧▽≦) ✨

The summary didn't lead anyone astray, even the tags and genre. It delivered what it said it would; a journey of evolution from a hollow bag of bones and flesh. Even if the main antagonist got an ending that barely covered two sentences, it still didn't take away from what Su Qing (MC) achieved.

However, I am disappointed with the tease of the other CPs but couldn't get to munch on it properly

Sixteen chapters in and I had to stop. I'm not sure if I made I mistake stopping prematurely but I just had to.

The MC has a lot of inconsistencies and one of the characteristics I hate the most. He was described as an airhead yet, displays quite the intelligence in the following chapters. He was described as timid but suddenly had a 180 having guts. Then there was this scene where it was portrayed that he was desperately trying to escape, even experiencing quite a lot of pain but then,... more>> when escape was right there and then, he gives up because he can't bear to leave someone? Like, that someone told him to look after his son if the MC ever escapes but bruh,... I hate heroic goody two shoes characters who do not think things through, going with emotions even if it's the worst thing that could have been done.

Also, the other characters are kinda off. The doctor in the RZ unit urging the other guy, probably the ML, to let the MC go because it might be traumatic to him. This is baseless theory though, he didnt have enough to justify that. Like, they have advance equipment to be able to disable the restraint in the MC but they don't have the capability to take care/nurse him?

Then the ML was sooooo busy looking for the ML but suddenly lets the MC go because a doctor, who says it's what's best just because he is a doctoc, says so. Like what the *?? It felt really devoid of logic.

Now on the translation, well, it was well translated. <<less

Honestly when I first wanted to read it I wasn't that interested since the summary and tags weren't really helpful, then I decided to read the reviews and thought why not, and it was not a mistake. Came here for some feel good weak to strong MC trope and I did not expected that happening to the MC.

This story is 100% new and fresh so far there isn't much romance and I feel like I'm reading a serious sci-fi novel more than a bl one, but it is really good,... more>> the MC isn't OP (so far) and neither is the ML (which I still don't know between those 2)

The novel feels human and organic Eventho this is a sci-fi story. I 100%%% recommend everyone to read this.

The translator has also done a really really good job. I mean come on they translated scientific terms, and theories. But yes they did an amazing job! <<less

The story is... not my favorite, tbh, but Priest is very entertaining when writing lying, damaged people (i.e. always), so if that's your thing and you want a well-translated book to read, rock on.

Hm. As a concept it was pretty interesting but the middle dawdled and the ending was terribly rushed. One doesn't read a Priest work for the romance tbh but in this one it felt almost mechanical. The ML felt rather absent. There wasn't anything that stood out about him except for him not adhering to the ML trope of cold/+controlling. The MC, on the other hand was quite colorful. I like him at lot despite many things.. He was savy and unabashedly shameless. My only grouse is that we were... more>> told several times the MC is 'complex' but weren't given many examples to back that up. I can only think of one or two situations where any dilemma showed. Also we were never truly shown how they worked out their relationship.

As far as characters go, there were a few interesting ones but they weren't really fleshed out. Same with the villains. Everything wrapped up so quickly, we never got to hear any of their stories, motivations or goals. Tutu was interesting as were the squad members.

Spoiler

Chen Lin - what a royal waste of his character! So much potential abandoned. I refused to believe he'd just give up.. Kept hoping he'd show up towards the end, only to be disappointed.

[collapse]

Highlight: The crafty MC (the bits that we were shown anyway) and his development.

In all, the world the author created definitely had potential but somehow the execution wasn't really there. Translation was top notch, as always. <<less

Good... but strangely anticlimactic.

This has your mix of action, sci-fi, lots of scientific theology, and romance, in a cherry-topped stew of what felt rather unemotional. It's like eating a whole bucket of minty ice cream -- addicting with the cool refreshing taste of sci-fi -- only to realize you feel just as hungry as when you started. I had a very limited sense of attachment to the story, and at the end it just felt strangely lacking and empty. To which, I've finally figured out why I feel a lot... more>> of novels are written in such a unemotional, unattached state: the translators have to find a way to retain that same novel feeling with the sprinkle of the right amount of description, right amount of humor, right amount of emotion, right amount of phrasing... and the list goes on and on. Undoubtedly, this is hard work. And because it's so hard, the translated copies will always have something missing... and what I've picked up on is the emotion. Much is written in the style of "say", not "do", which breaks the emotional bond that forms between the reader and the story character. (Not trying to blame anyone here, this COULD haven been the author's fault)

As a result, this novel once again feels lacking. The heart-wrenching break-up in the beginning, full of hate and grief and love, seems flat. Then again, us readers never saw the process of their relationship, but I think a lot of that unfamiliarity could be negated with more character description and cleverly used diction (when MC goes to drink out his sorrows). Moving on to another example, the MC never really bonded with anyone in his team later on either, which makes sense considering his character design, but the story could have been so much more intense and angsty for the reader
Spoiler

when some characters died later on, (there was a whole arc of the team recuperating because of that loss), so that definitely could've been played up more.

[collapse]

The beginning was actually pretty good, but as it went on the later parts of the story were a bit tedious and not as action-packed, with the MC and his team basically saving the world with minimal elaboration. In the end, I was just left with a feeling of, "What? That's it???"
Spoiler

The guy that actually kills the final boss was just a mole in the villainous organization and he was also a side character.... so it was quite anticlimactic.

[collapse]

Going back on track, the story is not all that bad and definitely interesting, with a lot of redeemable qualities, so give it a try.

Overall, I just don't think this novel was written to be emotional, but do read it for some interesting sci-fi perspective on emotion manipulation and major MC character growth from a useless vase to #1 conman. <<less

Started out strong, then lost momentum, and ended very abruptly. I've got no complaints with the characters, but the plot is a mess.

If I stop and think deeply about it, then I got a lot of complaints, but that wasn't how I read it, so whatever

One of the most flawed MCs I've ever read about; and I LOVE him. This guy really does go from lazy and apathetic, to sharp and distrusting of everyone (save for his 'son' lol), to... something cool for sure.

"He didn't care whom he went to bed with, didn't care about the position. His face was thicker than a city wall. An awl wouldn't have drawn blood. Only he wasn't used to people being too good to him. He was used to being left to his own devices to grow up... more>> malnourished among the weeds. Suddenly receiving too much sunlight and too much love, he wasn't used to it." - so yeah, our SQ learns to treasure himself and his relationship with others more <3

The blurb seems to tell you nothing at first, but it literally tells you everything. Oh, and a warning: don't have one-night stands to get over your emotionally abusive ex - cuz you never know whether you'll be dragged into an underground war against a psychology-based crime syndicate because of it <3

"Captain Hu, do you like me?"

"No. I think I love you." <<less

a CONSEQUENTIALLY FLAWED PROTAGONIST! CONSEQUENTIAL CHARACTER GROWTH!!! My soul has been PARCHED for this type of novel!!

For god's sake, I forgot what compelling character writing was for a while, that's how used I got to the usual novel tropes, to the point that I was starting to think that fundamentals such as character weakness and such was more of a western idea. So glad I came across this. No matter what you think, one reading this has to admit that at the VERY least, this is competently written, which is... more>> more than we can say for the bulk of this genre. We as an audience have gotten way too used to tr*sh, bro. Me included. I'm worried that I'll raise my standards to much after reading this. TOP NOTCH. <<less

If you like a character who goes from a useless, careless bum whiling his life away to a super cool, intelligent, badass, and basically OP person, then this is for you. The other aspects of this novel are a matter of taste and rather secondary (not saying they're bad, it's just that the growth is the central focus). It's the growth that really makes this a gem. It's pleasurable to watch our MC transform, who he becomes, and how his change surprises those around him.

I’m not a sci-fi fan but I’m reading this because of the excellent translation. Having said that, the story line of this novel is quite interesting and I really like the MC and ML. They both have personality. I’m riding the emotional waves of all their ups and downs. I highly recommend this novel. Enjoyable read and the updates are frequent.

A perfectly satisfying reading experience!

The plot was really too addictive and very interesting. The characters are very unique with very special characteristics within them. I met many lovely characters here. Also the friendship, family, romance, adventurous parts are very perfectly matched. Really an amazing novel.

Highly recommended!

Wow, as always from my most favorite author Priest, I like this story...

... and her complicated way of writing the story's plot.

Anyway, even tho there are some things that I don't quiet understand, especially the whole alternative space and such things, I do find the story is actually pretty easy to understand if only you can grasp the point or outline of the story.

As for the main characters, first I didn't really like the MC's character, but soon I started to like it. Now I don't have any problems with... more>> his character or behavior. The ML is also likable for me--actually, all the other main characters are all likable. Especially a guy named Fang Xiu. Wow, I adore him so much.

Although this story can't match with the excellence of Silent Reading, which until now still becomes my most favorite danmei novel, I still find The Ultimate Blue Seal readable and enjoyable. I guess Priest's way of writing stories really is to my taste.

Spoiler
[collapse]

The only thing that hinders me to give it 5 stars was because there's no following stories about the blue seals' condition, esp that newborn baby. If you already read the whole novel, you'll understand which baby I'm talking about. Or perhaps because I didn't notice it? Perhaps it will also get, at least, mentioned in this novel's spin off story. <<less

5⭐

the character development and growth for the MC was amazing. Tho I feel bad for the MC because of the things that happened to him just because he met someone, I feel like that really made him improve.

Though I have to say the ending was a little anticlimatic :/ that was the only flaw of the novel. But otherwise, the plot was good.

Okayyyy it's journey of a loser to become a.... cool person. Many misunderstandings and angst I say, and the plot is heavily focused on how to defeat Evil organizations, our MC development, and the rest is I guess on main pair relationship. hey the second couple are too er rushed is not what I want to say, just their screen time development relationship is not much (I still like their dynamic tho it's interesting) hella slow burn. I mean it, it's pretty complicated I think? The plot is interesting... more>> and overall I like it, but the ending ah, wtf happened? It's rushed :')

Not so spoiler but in the end this couple dynamic remind me of

I put off reading this for a long time because summary didn’t pique my interest and I’m normally not into sci fi until I finally ran out of other novels to read. Must say it’s interesting and a completely different genre to what I’m used to. The concept is fresh and I really like the MC. Cant say the same about the ML (or who I’m assuming is the ml).
Spoiler

one thing I found really frustrating was how incompetent the good guys seems to be. Like how the whole reason the MC got trapped was coz the ML sent him back alone after being targeted by the blue seals. And their entire technology depends one one guy with unclear origins?

[collapse]

That’s the reason I rated 4 stars and hoping it gets better as I read on.
