Lin Wei Xi found out after she died that she was just a cannon fodder in a novel, used as contrast to the gentle and considerate and virtuous female lead.

The male lead was her ex-husband, the dignified heir of Yan Wang, his family were superior and brilliant, but the female lead was not her.

The female lead was her concubine-born younger sister, and her husband’s white moonlight, his cinnabar mole, no wonder! After Lin Wei Xi died, her husband finally married her sister as he wished.

She watched coldly at the two like honey in the oil, in love and harmonious, everyone using the success of her younger sister to contrast the impropriety of the original wife.

Lin Wei Xi sneered, okay, since your love moves the world, then this sister will come back and be your stepmother!

So she married her ex-husband’s father, the father-in-law she never met in the previous life, the country’s God of war, who has not remarried after losing his wife, the one that hold military power, the brilliant Yan Wang.

Later Yan Wang, who was in his prime years and used to act decisively, looked at his small, delicate, much younger wife, and had a headache.

No matter, she is still young, he have to spoil her, indulge her, teach her.

i have read the whole thing in a weekend I think, I love the FL and ml, I love the realism of human relations and I love their romance this is one of my favorite couples and their interactions are the biggest selling point of this story to me, it is what casts it apart from other novels of the gender

also I beg to pardon with one of the reviewers above, I don't feel bad for the son at all, I think he is just as bad as any other... more>> villain, just that the author took A LOT of effort in to painting him in a better light and trying to blame all his shitty actions into every woman he ever interacted with, he is selfish, self-entitled, mediocre and he killed the fl

I just with it had 500 chapters instead of 100 but what can u do <<less

This is good. My only regret is about the ex-husband ending. I know he is wrong, but it all start with misunderstanding and bad communication. It kinda remind me with the ex-husband story in bai fumei in 70s. Both regret their action, and I wish both authors write another sequel with different universe where they can get their happy ending.

There was bewilderment in the comments why the leading character believes that it is more important to manage the house, and an emotional connection with her husband is the business of concubines. But this is quite obvious and is stated several times in the novel. The legal wife MUST manage the house, this is her duty, this is her job and her face. And this is also her protection. The concubine relies on emotional tricks because her only support and protection is a man. A concubine rarely has power, usually... more>> there is no strong family background that can support her, a concubine can simply be sold or kicked out and society will not say anything against it. The concubine's children cannot even call her mother. Therefore, the first and main tool of a concubine is emotional intimacy with her husband. Having seen this since childhood, the presenter does not understand why she - a legal wife - should be likened to... in general, a s*ave. The presenter is a legitimate daughter, the daughter of a wife, not a concubine, the granddaughter of the Great Princess, noble in purity of birth and upbringing. She was NOT taught the tricks of concubines; moreover, adult women, who had influence on the leader in childhood, despise concubines. Moreover, in her life there was no example of the emotional attachment of legal spouses. We look through the eyes of modern people, but even in our time there is such a thing when a wife is for the face and connections, and a mistress is for the body or heart.
And Gao Ran... she was too relaxed and could not understand that the world around her lived at a different speed. But she didn’t understand the principle “for the face and for the heart” at the time, otherwise she would have acted differently later. Something else is strange to me. If Yan Wang understood what was wrong with his young wife (which in itself is very strange, because he did not know the presenter before his rebirth), then the reaction to this... okay, let’s chalk it up to the era and religious teachings.
But why the presenter didn’t use the story of how she helped the previous owner of the body to give out slaps in the face - I don’t understand!!! I'm too modern to understand this.
I also don’t know English and am writing through a translator... <<less

Mediocre story

I don’t mind with dumb/evil/ignorant characters. What I do mind in this story is the repetitive. The same part repeated over and over again, I could skip 6 to 9 pharagraph when this happened.

I also didn’t find the fluffiness. It will be better if MC didn’t described to reborn as a divine beauty. I felt it was like a part where people tolerate your bad habit because you’re pretty while the old MC before she dies treated bad just because her looks is mediocre. They’re basically the same but... more>> the treatment received different just because after rebirth she have super duper pretty face.

Some ppl will like this face slapping story, but I find it’s a boring one. Wish the author didn’t use repetitive style to describe the past, that way I might enjoy it more. <<less

I loved the story for most of the novel.... until the ML decided to be a b**ch...

Spoiler

like, he’s so good to her until he starts to realize that she is probably his previous daughter-in-law, which happens to occur at the same time as she is pregnant for the first time in her young life. And he decides to just up and leave without even sending letters for her entire pregnancy to go to a Lil war... likwtffffff. no. He literally almost missed her giving birth, she was going to have to give birth alone, with no one..... I was so mad, . I felt like that plot point didn’t make sense with how responsible he had been until then

I got about 1/2 way through (a little less) until I dropped this one. This story is excruciatingly slow. While the premise was interesting, the narrator is a reincarnated immature girl (15 or 16) married to a true man (33). The age gap wouldn't be a problem if she was more mature, neither would the doting, but honestly it just reads like someone who married someone due to vengeance and pity which is just a headache. I may have liked this if I was younger, but I find the MC's... more>> lack of maturity simply grating at this point.

translation quality: very good

plot quality: It's there, but it's thin. Much seems forced, unrealistic, or unreasonable. Also, characters are rather two dimensional and lack the growth you would expect for a story of this length and genre.

2 stars. <<less

I really loved the interaction between the couples in this one. It made me want to have such relationship. As the ML said when the FL scolded ppl its entertaining.

The author pulled through with another great novel. The characters and plot were refreshing.

Really recommend this novel!

Really enjoying this story and looking forward to the eventual end. It's an interesting blend of common tropes but without some of the tiresome excesses of MC suffering or s*upidity, slag ML abusiveness and forced (read ridiculous) conflict. The characters seem real and love the multiple pov's. Thanks to this translator for your hard work!!! I appreciate when the TN sticks to the original main chapter numbering and stays with a project from start to finish😁

p.s. I would do more rating & comments on direct TN sites if I didnt... more>> have to sign up for all those different accounts to be able to have access 🤔 <<less

The story is good. But it has so many tragic incidents in it. Especially the MC's original family. I liked the story also hated it some parts. The MC is really interesting character.. As others said.. She is stubborn to her bones. Can give it a try. You may like it or not

Spoiler

The real villains are the shu Sister and her mother han shi. Specially the concubine mother. She is the real cause of everything happened to MC and her family (original Family). The Ex-husband is a s*upid delusional idiot. Not entirely his fault, , his mother and his Gene's. The ML is quite good. He's genuinely fallen in love with MC as time pass. But one point you gonna angry with him.. Someone explained other review..

Decided to drop the story because the MC was really very irrational and unlikeable. Honestly, no one in the book was very likeable but I stayed for the potential face slapping. Turns out face slapping is not that enjoyable if you don't care much for the MC.

I thought the MC was s*upid and the way she would act in front of the ML was so inconsistent and odd. One moment she would act really young and cute and the next moment she would question if he found her to be... more>> too young zzz

The ML was ok but nothing special tbh. He was helpful and loved his wife, I guess?

I felt kind of bad for the ex-ML because of the lying staff he had around him, even when growing up. The ML knew the kind of scum which was in the household and did nothing to stop this. The ex-ML also had to grow up with a possibly mentally unhinged mother and the people he trusted all lied to him. I don't think he deserves the original MC but I do feel bad for him because he did not know how love was supposed to be like outside of the "fairytales" his mother would tell him. <<less

I love this so much. MC is definitely one of my favorite character so far. I love how she didn't seek revenge in her new life although it's justified for her. Initially, she even chose to live by herself somewhere without having to marry again for the rest of her life, part of it also because of the trauma she received in her first marriage. But fate brought her again to where it all began.

If Gao Ran didn't scheme her to marry a lecheorus man, she won't propose a marriage... more>> to ML and ended up being her ex's stepmother. But even after she married ML, she didn't deliberately made it difficult for her ex husband and Gao Ran. Instead, it's Gao Ran who kept making trouble. MC had many chances to drive Gao Ran away but she didn't do it and only punished her accordingly based on her mistakes.

She also had a chance to make it difficult for her father's family using her status as Yan Wangfei but she didn't do it. She even helped her family found a suitable candidate for sizhi so her family would still be prosperous in a long time.

And the face slapping was so satisfying. Everyone who wronged her in the past got their own retribution without her trying to take reveng by herself.

Spoiler
  • Gao Ran was imprisoned in buddhist hall for the rest of her life because she attempted to kill MC and also her family's sizhi at the same time. Later, she was killed by ML's subordinate because she almost exposed the truth behind MC's reborn.
  • Her father died from an accident after losing so much blood. It's like in the past where he made MC's mother suffered a blood loss due to miscarriage and resulting her death. He was crushed after knowing that it was all due her concubine's instigation.
  • MC's grandmother fell gravely ill after learning about Gao Ran's true color. She also regretted pampering Gao Ran so much while ignoring MC who was also her granddaughter.
  • The servants who disrespected her were all sent away.
  • Cheng Yao also deeply regretted his treatment towards MC in the past. He was still single till the end of the story. He also chose to stay in the capital while ML and MC left for the fief. To be fair, Cheng Yao was a good kid. He was a victim of his mother's delusion and his maid's over pampering treatment. In this case, ML also had his fault. He was too busy going to the war and didn't have time to educate him properly.
[collapse]

Apart from MC, I also love ML. I love how he loved MC unconditionally and accepted her for the way she was. He trusted her completely and even defended her when she was bullied by other people. As for their gap, who cares? <<less

Before you ask, yes I read it because I may have a secret daddy kink thought the premise sounded crazy fun. Like what in the spicy chicken plot was this? Marrying your ex's father?? Talk about a ruthless back-hand!

I didn't expect too much; I just felt interested because it reminded me of Second Marriage of a Wealthy Old Man- a BL novel that has a similar premise. My expectations were low, but I actually enjoyed it more than I thought. Not saying that the novel isn't superficial- it is,... more>> but I felt that the characters had more ground as opposed to your typical rebirth/transmigration stock cast. It wasn't your typical revenge-driven, face-slapping dog blood plot. It was about finding your place in life, finally being cherished, understanding loss. I really liked how it dove into the importance of upbringing, how a parent can both positively & negatively influence his or her child's life. The whole stressing over patriarchal & gender norms affirmed my belief that I will never willingly transmigrate to Ancient China. Nope! I'm not up for rigid decorum & inner-household skirmishes. Definitely is reminiscent of Story of MingLan in that aspect, but a blander version to say the least.

If anything read it for ML cuz I love him- a total alpha male. He's humble, respectful, & loyal. Not to mention capable & hot! Different from your iceberg tyrants; this one will actually yield to ensure that your reputation isn't ruined. I dig the dynamic between him & MC; they balance out each other very well. TL is rough, just putting that out there. But considering I used to read on wattpad... who am I to complain. Plus, I still wouldn't resort to MTL so again I have no right for arguments lmao <<less

This novel doesn't deserve 4 star so I wanna bring it down. My final verdict is 3*

Translation - thanking translator for sticking to end, confusing to read some point

  • not sure if it's translation or actual writing but some part hard to read
  • Transmigration disguise as a rebirth, weak female disguise as strong minded
  • Very SOL, no strong interesting overarching plot
  • Show don't tell rule is broke, first novel I feel confident to skip para cause it's so obvious and repetitive
  • Author was weak on gao xi husband

This novel is much much better than the author's other novel "It's better to be the Empress Dowager". At least the MC here is more likeable and much smarter than the other novel. MC is given a 2nd chance in life and she doesn't hesitate to take revenge on those who has wronged her after finding out the truth through a "Heavenly Book". It's a good thing that she also quickly cuts off all feelings for her ex-husband who ill treated her in her previous life.

ML treats MC well and... more>> would've been a model husband except for the fact that
Spoiler

he allows his servants to disrespect his wife by using the authority of his 1st dead wife who he doesn't even love anyway. His 1st wife was a delusional psychopath who stalked him until he married her and she would spin fantastic tales about how great their "love" was. It wouldn't really be a problem until the "fairytale 1st love" is threatening his true love and 2nd wife's happiness and even then he was not willing to step up and clarify the truth that he doesn't love the 1st wife, his 1st wife is a complete psycho and can everyone please stop using his 1st wife to undermine his 2nd wife and true love. His reasoning? It's not good to speak ill of the dead. So he continues to let everyone abuse his 2nd wife. That really sucks. If I was the MC, if my husband is not going to step up for me and speak out the truth and instead he prefers to let everyone continue to disrespect/abuse me over the 1st wife I would've just left him immediately. Even after his soldiers advised him to tell the truth he still stubbornly refuses to clarify the story about his 1st wife.

[collapse]

If the ML was more decisive about this issue I would've given this story a 5 stars but sadly due to his unwillingness to protect MC, the max is just a 4 stars for me. <<less

I really like the ML here. ML is a mature, magnanimous and responsible man. Even though he doesn't like his first wife, he still try to be a good father for his son, the original ML.

Its just I think our FL, deserves a second chance. I personally feel Gao Xi doesn't get her 'revenge' yet. It would be better if she reincarnated as herself, then she get out of her engagement with the original ML, meeting the current ML, and so on. Especially the part where FL's mother died because... more>> of FL's father concubine. FL's father is a scum so I would be more satisfied with the story if he has regrets towards FL and her mom.

Moreover, the reason why her first marriage ended up that way isn't solely because of original ML's fault. It's also because of the scheme of her half-sister. <<less

The actual romance was a bit slow and could have done without some of the drawn out POVs of other characters, but overall, it was a solid read.

I will say that I preferred the Moon Jellyfish translation on wordpress, but they're only halfway through translating. That being said. It was still readable and a decent translation.

First of, as a clarification and warning to people expecting a true face slapping revenge story: the MC (LWX) does not get reborn. She dies, reads the original book, and then transmigrates to another girl she had some connection to who wanted to die and join her father but also liked LWX. She gets her revenge, but she's the only one who knows and she's never actually able to clear her original name. Satisfying enough for her, but probably not the reader.

The author is good at pacing and characterization, and... more>> the translation work is also really good. The intro moves super fast, so by the first handful of chapters you're already all caught up on the plot. You're also thrown in right in the middle of the action, so you get invested in the MC early on and already have a dislike for the OFL and OML.

MC is feisty but very realistic for the setting and her background, and initially she isn't even out for revenge but just wants to move on and have a better life. She doesn't have it all figured out from the get go, and she's actually not the best at a lot of stuff. I actually think it's interesting to contrast her with Greetings, Ninth Uncle's MC, who is a perfect selfish white flower who won't let people bully her and has no attachments to anyone. In this, LWX is the one who is sincere and filial to the point of wronging herself, although she's also cunning enough to catch others' plots and turn them around. LWX herself admits that her original sister (original novel's FL) is much better at serving others than she is (she really is, for all her faults she definitely understands proper daughter-in-law ettiquette).

ML (Prince Yan or Gu Hui Yan, the father of her original husband) is the "stoic general" type but in a realistic way where he has his 'more human' side too. He's a bit boring as a character, but I like his relationship with LWX. He's the "actual responsible adult who thinks about reputations and age gaps" to LWX's "impulsive teenager who tends to get over her head", which I actually like since it emphasizes the age+generation gap as a serious plot point and not just a random throwaway line to justify her being in the house.

It's really nice seeing their understated romance develop. Unlike GNU, LWX here already looked up to GHY so she already had seeds of liking that blossom after marriage. GHY originally just thought of her as his friend's daughter but starts to think of her as "my lovable wife" and becomes a henpecked husband who supports her in everything. Theirs is a more traditional 'loving marriage', but it's nice to see.

The background is also very well fleshed out, feeling like there's really a world beyond the main plot, like even if the MCs disappeared there would still be an interesting story to tell. I've gotten really into Ancient China-setting political intrigue since first reading this, and sometimes I want to shake LWX and say "tell me more about the drama!!" The people around them feel like people. Sure the ones meant to be antagonists act shitty, but their shittiness has more substance than other villains where their antagonism is over the top for the sake of victimizing the protag.

The only character I would say is over the top is the OFL, but she actually acts like (a more annoying version of) some transmigrator FLs I've read before, which actually makes it interesting since it's like seeing an outsider's POV of how that kind of character can be shitty. She made an enemy out of MC on purpose not even because she did anything, but because she was absolutely certain she would be the white lotus rival because that's what happens in dramatic love stories. Whenever she shows up, there's this feeling I get that she's like those people irl who try to act like they're in a TV drama, but it doesn't work out the way they expect because TV is not real life.

TW for one of the early chapters:

Spoiler

There's an almost-r*pe scene in one of the early chapters, it serves a purpose and moves the plot along and nothing happens beyond knowing that it could've happened.

[collapse]

All in all, I really love this novel so far. The first few chapters can be a little difficult to dive into if this is your first Ancient China-based novel (which it was for me, but this review has since been edited after I've read many more webnovels like this) since it just goes straight into the deep end, but it stays interesting and engaging. <<less

This was a really fun read. I was hesitant due to some reviews saying the end really bothered them, but for me I liked how everything was written. Please do give this story a go!

It was immersive and you just cant put the story down. Great job on the translation as well, the flow was really easy to follow.

I think another reader @astroblues02 has mentioned everything else that I want to say.

Overall very much recommended!
