Rereading for the third time, why everyone needs a love story without drama or twists, I understand how many people would consider the boring story because it tells the daily lives of two people passing peacefully and the development of a warm love story.

Slice of life describes the representation of mundane experiences, in anime and manga, "slice of life" is a genre that often resembles a teenage melodrama, I really feel like I'm reading slice of life, besides showing that the progress of relationships also shows difficulties of survival in... more>> a remote region and despite some inaccuracies I read about eviscerating animals and I liked it, I found it very educational.

My friends consider me a non-romantic woman because you will not see novels on my reading list or watch movies or series that are focused on this theme, because I have the perception that everything is so unnecessarily complicated, the closest I like stories romantic is Yaoi and I often get upset with some stories as well.
In love stories in a generalized way the characters always seem to always be the same, I mean one author found the formula for success and several authors follow and do more of the same.

Here it seems very different, a nobleman by name and an older woman in the army, in a temporary marriage. It's cute, fun, and well written could be more concise at times it felt like it was just Filler but it really is a cute, nice, exciting and gorgeous tale.

I don't usually read stories like these, but I just had to make an exception. This is adorable. A warm and fluffy slice of life. I love the female lead, a kind and dependable older woman is always nice to see.

Ok.

I'm gonna be honest.

SoL is not one of my favorite genres.

... more>> What's more, I probably wouldn't endure SoL novels if not for the fantasy or whatever that is intertwined with the SoL elements, and even then, I almost never read SoL.

But I loved this one.

"Lappland", is a real place (search it out, Lapland Finland).

The "customs" are based on real ancient customs of the place.

I don't know if the author went to live there, or just did extensive research to present us with a somewhat accurate representation of the daily lives of a dwindling town in that era, on that area.

So... if you want to douse yourself in a culture very different than yours (unless you're Finnish) go right ahead.

And if you're Finnish (like some readers in the comment sections) please go right in and point out how it differs from real life and what is artistic license.

Also... the characters are fantastic; an older military noblewoman married the younger lord of that land who is very kindhearted.

There are several fantastical elements that complement the setting in a way that feels immersive if not entirely realistic but have a solid grounding.

The romance is fun, formulaic as all Japanese authors tend to be, but fun.

And the SoL elements elevate it instead of feeling like a hindrance (at least to me) because it's always shifting and changing and depicting different things that actually happen, not just "I went to the market and bought fresh produce and cooked it, and everyone enjoyed."

You do get that, but it's so different, since it's following recipes from a faraway place that sound interesting and how they managed their resources, it's the northernmost region of Finland, they needed to do certain things to survive the long dark nights and other miscellaneous tidbits of the setting (the fortress, the soldiers, the inhabitants of the territory, the forest).

It feels like a mystical land, and it's very compelling since you know it actually does exist in real life.

If you're a SoL enjoyer, you're gonna love this.

If you're NOT a SoL enjoyer, you might find that this one feels different.

There is a reason for the characters to do this and that, because it's directly related to their survival, it's an entirely different way of life from what we're used to see and read on other stories.

And for me that works splendidly. <<less

Very fluffy story that's calming to read. However, you probably don't want to binge this unless you are in the correct mood because it will get boring.

There are no huge conflicts, plot twists, or those ridiculously dumb misunderstandings that last throughout the whole story that could have been solved with one simple conversation. There are just the lives of a sweet, loving couple.

It just managed to capture my heart! From the start to finish. To be honest I forgot their names already LOL since I read it a long time ago, but I could never forget how this novel made me feel. It's just so cute.

The interactions between the husband and the wife are just heartwarming! I also love the love stories of the side characters! The author really did well! Thank you!

This is a really cute slice of life story. It's mostly about having to deal with moving to a completely foreign place, and dealing with ups and downs of married life (or life in general). The side stories are also pretty cute, you get to see the blossoming relationships with other characters as well.

I'm not sure about what else to say but would definitely recommend this if you're looking for something more light hearted and fluffy.

This series is like a really good cup of coffee with 1 or 2 too many teaspoons of sugar.

The setting is loosely pulled from reality, and even introduces the reader to some indigenous peoples and their struggles during the colonial era - a pretty uncommon element in light novel plots. Some historical aspects are 'cleaned up' to make for a smoother, less 'gritty' read.

Spoiler

The 'fairy-like' sami people from northern finland and norway are not quite as described in reality, though the fashion is pretty much on point. And things like hunting, war, and other gritty realities of the era are somewhat romanticized - as if aiming for a pg rating

[collapse]

The characters are well developed. Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses, and they all interact pretty naturally. Dialogue is easy to follow since everybody speaks with their own personality.

The plot... The stuff that happens is pretty entertaining. It takes slice-of-life to a bit of an adventurous level. It can be frustrating at times to follow the chronology. Each volume is peppered with chapters from the distant past and future which are meant to provide insight into current events but would be better off told in order.

All in all, pretty nice, relaxing read, though maybe a little to relaxing considering the setting. <<less

It's not sweet it's not cute... but more of a tale of fairy (kindhearted soul) who goes out searching for companionship for the lonely dark nights. So afterwards what he have is a lovestory and the happy ever story along with it.

A tale of snow fairy husband and a raptor wife. A slice-of-life story that pays attention to supporting characters, has many detailed explanations and interesting facts and is bad for your sugar levels. You may get diabetes from reading it. Definitely recommend. Very refreshing.

The author is very good at writing. And has done extensive research on food, (honestly, I feel hungry every time I read this.)

The romance is diabolically cute, it's a very well written, fun slice of life. Give it a try if you haven't; unless you can't stand slice of life, you'll love this guaranteed.

If you want to read a fluffy romance between two kind individuals, say no more. Here it is.

No drama, no love rivals or any of that sort, and you just want to read or live vicariously through them and enjoy a happily married life in the north where there are reindeers, great food, and another culture. Here you go.

This is the kind of book that makes you want to fall in love and get married.

I always like slice of life novel the best. This kind of novel made me feel like that I also experienced anything the characters do.

Earlier when I read the description, I was unsure if this is my "cup of tea" because the girl is the older one. Honestly, I've never read novel with FL as the older one. So I delayed it and put this novel in my list of TBR (to-be-read).

But when I accidentally read the manga, slowly but sure I happen to love their story.... more>>

Ritzhard and his wife, and their families's stories. Also their daily life and their neighbourhood.

[collapse]

Then, I read the novel too. So, for the final conclusion, not every older FL is domineering and a tyrant. Also, this is a fluffy novel with the "fuwa fuwa" after taste. I'm still hoping that the author write about their children stories too (not just one or two extra chapters but a complete novel) but every good things too needs an end so there can be new things to enjoy. Thank you for the translators who gives me a chance to read this Jp novel <<less

3stars (the ui needs updating so you can change them)

Overall it's a nice story if not a little boring and repetitive, I like the main character but hes the worst character in the entire story.

I would have much preferred sieg as the MC as she has more depth and interesting aspects to her, honestly this is 3 stars because we only get like 3 chapters of her pov and shes more interesting, un fortunately everything that made her unique and different was stripped away by the second volume.

... more>> Volume 1

This is a decent start to the story however it's pretty boring and dry, about 1/5th of the this volume is actually interesting and valuable to read, most chapters feel like your just reading the same chapter but told in a different way. The whole time I was disappointed that we didnt get mor sieg pov.

Volume 2

Much better, this chapter flows much more easily and due to having more characters to work with we get more varied dialogue than the first, thanks to certain plot points we also get deeper understanding when it comes to characters and local customs.

Though it's a bit sad that we only got a chapter or two of the mc's parents and it wasnt that great, was expecting more, like seigs army friend in the first volume.

Volume 3

A return to form, much like the first volume it's kind of boring, but there are more plot points and reasons for interactions within the snowy country and like volume 3 it benefits from having several other pov's to draw from.

My main gripe is that it didnt skip until after all the kids were born, that way wed have more interesting things to read about as so much time had past.

Volume 4

Meh tbh I just wanted to get through it at this point, it's nice to see the family chemistry and all but the ending was kind of anti climactic and like v3 I kind wish they just time skipped to after all the kids were born.

Extra chapters

Hit or miss some are good some are useless, I wish they were integrated propperly. <<less

Hokuou is like national geographic, liziqi and a bit wholesome shokugeki no soma rolled into one! And tbh I skipped some of it but it's a great read! Tip: You can skip these parts and still able to understand and enjoy the story.

While reading I felt that not having a Doting tag here is an injustice to our ML.

If you dreamt of reading a novel with more epilogues than the story development, like me, then this is for you!

Lastly, side characters stories are all interesting and enjoyable.

Everything everybody said, but the extras couldn't hold my attention. I couldn't even be bothered to skip them to find the main story again, so I wish this novel was organized differently.

I love this so much I didn’t want to finish reading it. I swear.

It’s fluffy. Slice of life so can be a bit boring to some but it’s such a great read. Sure it jumps to different time periods but it suits my taste.

Wonderful translation. I have no other words

Rare to come across a web novel, with such gorgeous cover art, though this one seriously needs a proof-reader. Story feels more like a 19th century Nordic tale, than a traditional European-style Fantasy novel. A chill slice of life, of an interesting odd couple that are made for each other. There's a lot of nothing important happening throughout and also A LOT of cooking.

Truly a superb COMPLETE story. Emphasis on complete since I get bummed out with weekly releases.

Also, the translator did a superb job. There were very few errors with her grammar, it's almost unnoticeable. Truly, an exceptional job from the translator.

The story of Ritz and Sieglinde was very sweet, heart warming and light. I was truly invested in their love story. Lots of chapters that change POVs but this was really done well and you don't get bored with the pov switch at all. I think it's because the characters... more>> are very likeable and amusing.

Read this if you're looking to take a break from the usual actions fantasy or isekai stories since this story is truly relaxing. <<less
