This is a decent romance story about a young girl who doesn't have a place she belongs to (partially due to a prediction of her fate made by an immortal), finding someone of whom she can spend her life with while fighting/following her fate.

Her personality is "unique", pretty much frustrating everyone who she comes in contact, and is the main draw of the story.

However, don't expect too much out of the story. The story will mostly follows Xin Mei's love life and some of the challenges they face getting together.... more>> There won't be any grand epic story line/adventure of any sort.

The description for the story, unfortunately, lasts about 2 chapters and stops being relevant.

A better synopsis is probably:

When Xin Mei was just one month old, an immortal made a divination of her fate: “Your daughter has a very strange fate. Her marriage... will be a bit unusual. Her future groom will be half-human, half-ghost. It’s her fate to curse her husband.” Due to the fortune, no one in her city is willing to marry her. Thus, Xin mei set out to find herself a good husband and where her fate belongs. <<less

The premise for this story is unique. Our female lead is reaching her age of maturity (16) and her kind father is trying to find her a good husband. In spite of being wealthy, connected, and respected no man will marry his daughter! What should have been a breeze is now a struggle. The reason is due to a fortune made when the girl was young.

“Your daughter has a very strange fate. Her marriage... will be a bit unusual. Her future groom will be half-human, half-ghoul. It’s her fate to... more>> jinx her husband.”

Since no man in the city will take his daughter for fear of becoming jinxed the kind father decides to send her out to deliver goods so that she can look elsewhere to find herself a good husband.

This story is so far is actually pretty funny. The story has a light and subtle atmosphere that's fun to read. The humor is subtle but consistent and adds greatly to the story. Our female lead is also a good character. She is not a deadly martial artist, ethereal beauty, or great genius but a humble, confident, down-to-earth type. Her expectation for a husband are very practical rather than ambitious with her propositioning guards and disciples ignoring the overly beautiful men. Her personality and the atmosphere are refreshing and fun.

This story is high fantasy with magical beast, demons, and immortals. But how things are described is very mystical and immersive. I'm almost more interested in the world than the story. But the authors funny way of handling the reactions of those around the MC are too funny to skip. Shame that there is no group currently translating this story. The two chapters currently available are both long and translated very well. They're worth reading and treating like a short-story as they're enjoyable enough as is. <<less

Very humorous and entertaining xuanhuan story. This should be considered a romcom where "bad" characters get their redemption and nothing really "bad" happens. Enemies don't die and don't really stay enemies.

Spoiler

The war backdrop doesn't feel real when all the characters are caricatures.

[collapse]

The MC is very comedic and relatable as she has a bunch of "modern" sensibilities (and is basically face-blind to pretty guys, which is hilarious) while the cast are pretty much representative of wuxia/xianxia cliches. Like the beautiful (effeminate) fox demon lord, the mysterious masked monk, the face-paralyzed demonic ML, the 'red white lotus' love rival, etc.

However, one of the reasons I took off a star is that the MC (who had been carrying the first part of the story with her straightforward, unconventional personality) becomes an extremely flat character not long after marriage.

Spoiler

She literally turns from super pro-active heroine into your ideal housewife who waits at home, does nothing except clean the house, cook, and pine for her husband to come back from "war."

Blegh.

Author tries to make the whole thing better by talking about the role reversal as the MC's mom used to be the one going out and around while her dad stayed at home waiting for her mom to come back, which doesn't work because: her dad runs his own big business "at home" raising and training mythical creatures.

MC doesn't have any hobbies and simply goes from "girl who represents her dad's company and takes creatures around and travels all over" to "wife sitting at home waiting for husband to come back for 4 years, " which sounds like the author totally forgot the whole premise at the start of the story.

Adds to why I don't think this is josei, since the MC thinks that being 20+ is "super old", which makes this shoujo.

[collapse]

Translation is pretty good (though a couple parts could be less literal) and is paired with entertaining reference images. <<less

The premise is interesting and the earlier chapters are also promising. MC is funny, straightforward, and not easy to bully. She successfully makes this story livelier. But later, this story becomes a melodramatic drama which is not funny anymore. And MC also loses her charm and doesn't like how she used to be. So, this is a 3 stars for me.

The Female Lead is a has very strong personality.

Even in the start of the novel, when her father said that she needed to get married urgently; the female lead, Xin Mei, actually really didn't place this matter in her heart. But, because of her father and other's nagging, she really thought of getting married.

And the first time, when she meet the male lead, Liu Qian Qiao, it was a bit quick, even I don't know what I mean, so don't mind..... So what happened was that she had to... more>> send some magical beast to whatsoever academy or something. During travelling to her destination, she came across Imperial Mausoleum (ML's Territory).

And she somehow crossed the ML's fog formation and he also took her magical animals and warned her not to enter his territory.

The next time when the met was, when Xin Mei was crossing the fog formation again for some reason or maybe it was accidently or something but the ML was worried that the FL can enter so it is going to be dangerous for the people (no... no, correctly speaking: MONSTERS and SPIRITS), so he just dragged her back with him.

The ML placed her into a room and she escaped and he captured her back, afterwards when the ML's heart softening for Xin Mei, his mom came, so he just told the FL to go away and she went halfway.

As for the ML, he was talking about death with his mom and when he was stubborn about something, she actually made two war demons beat the ML up, even though he was powerful: he was not powerful as the other war demons.

And after his mom left, the FL came and saved him... well many hardships happened for the FL and ML and afterwards......... the match made in heaven was created!

So guys I will not spoil the story any further for you guys.

The ML actually left the FL many times and even made her wait for 4 years but when he left her it was to save her; it was for her own good and when he made her wait for 4 years, it was his mother's request (I think so...) because the war demon clan was fighting with the fox clan and it finally finished and Liu Qian Qiao and Xin Mei lived together happily not interfering outside world matters.

I will give you brief character introduction:

Female Lead: Xin Mei

She was the beloved daughter of the magical animal merchant Xin Xiong. The Xin family was well-reputed and wealthy. Xin Mei's mother died, during child-birth.

And her when she was one year old an immortal divined her fate and told her father that: "Your daughter has a very strange fate. Her marriage... will be a bit unusual. Her future groom will be half-human, half-ghost. It's her fate to curse her husband." And somehow it got out and since then no one wanted to marry her. '

The FL is actually very beautiful, good-natured, she is a bit wild and she very carefree and has a strangely-imaginative mind. At first she hated the ML, later she loved him very much....

Male Lead: Liu Qian Qiao

He was a half-human and half-war demon.

He become a general at a young age and his parents were a bit awkward. His mother was a female war demon but when she became more powerful, she killed her husband because of some reasons and became unreasonable since then,

The ML was aloof, cold and overbearing like other CEO MLs. But he is really good to the monsters and spirits in his territory and he is very nice and warm towards the FL. He loved her a lot....

This book is very touching (maybe only to me) but the plot is also good.

If any of you are curious then have a go at reading this book! <<less

MC: a young, lively girl looking forward to buying a husband (a white rabbit)

ML: a overbearing, cold half human-half berserker (a big bad wolf)

Overall:

The MC is fairly witty and assertive, which is always a plus if you're tired of weak, naive female leads. While the ML is the typical handsome, overbearing, and arrogant type. Honestly, I only read for the side characters because their interactions are hilarious and adorable, especially the Xians (immortals). The MC is fairly entertaining, but the ML is a real turnoff. I really can't... more>> handle how overbearing and cold the ML is, he is low-key controlling. If not for how witty and assertive the MC is, I'm afraid this story may have gone the stockholm syndrome route or another darker theme. <<less

“Just say it.” Zhen Hong Sheng, seeing her wanting to say something but unable to, hastily hinted that she tell the truth bravely. He has always very attentive about his own appearance, and he perked his eyes to hear her evaluation.

This is an amazingly original story❣️ Even among the well made stories of the usual xanxia, imperial palace, high school, and arrogant CEO themes, this story stands out as an original from start to finish with a cast of great characters. Funny, sweet, sad, tragic, loss, triumph, it really deserves more attention.

Thanks translator for sharing this with us❣️

I am really bothered the fact that ML mother obliterated her husband family. At first I thought they don't give af about human life but the characters cares their own clan. So maybe they don't give af about innocent life except their own. If what the mother said is true, the father also don't give af about his own family members.

This was funny and entertaining. There were moments when I laughed out loud because of our MC and the humor was delivered beautifully. The ML was annoying at times and I would have loved more romance between them but oh well. This was a good filler while waiting for the updates of other long novels.",)

Well... Where do I start... Firstly, this is not quite a 5/5, but I am willing to give it that.

A good old beautiful female lead who melts the heart of an ice cold male lead, only to realize that trials and tribulations follow! This is quite an understatement for this novel, as it is full of characters who genuinely seem interesting. Good cute moments mixed with tremendously funny moments are often interlaced with some sentimental scenes which frankly don't quite hit.

Both the male and female leads stick to the stereotype... more>> to the T, but they are very well developed. While their romance might not tickle the heart of most people, for me, it was believable enough. I further love the kind of closure that we get with regards to their love.

However, I have to talk about the ignored parts of this novel which simply reek of shoddy writing. The antagonistic mother of the male lead who is desperately shown to be a multi-dimensional character when all she is is a good-old third wheel. A third wheel which doesn't even steady the carriage.

Inspite of this, the general cast of characters is very likable. While the conflict in the novel does trickle down at times, the overall pacing of the novel is good and keeps you engaged.

All in all, a rather shaky read which eventually manages to barely sneak into the good list.

This is not Mango approved. <<less

It's sad how little the chapters are, since this is such a great read. Even though the there are only two chapters. You can really see the tone of the novel, which is light hearted and funny. The translations are good, give it a try even with little chapters its still fun to read

**3.5 "I can see this as a Cdrama" Stars**

Honestly it's a very solid 3.5, but I ended up rounding up because of the demons in the Imperial Mausoleum. They're so fun and kooky! The FL was also hilarious. If you're looking for an ancient Chinese xuanhuan romance with shoujo vibes, you've come to the right place. While this was written in 2011 (which made me hesitate to read it), it aged well and is readable even 10 years later.

TRANSLATION

This series went through a couple of translators, and they were all... more>> top-notch. The majority of the chapters were translated on Xin-Shou and the translator did a great job in adding pictures for context and footnotes to better understand phrases. Their T/N's were also pretty inconspicuous. Sometimes I felt a lack in the flow of the writing (especially when idioms/historical phrases are used), but overall the story was readable.

The story's exposition itself wasn't the best (something would happen and readers would be like "when did this happen? Did we miss something? Etc) but I feel like this was because of the actual writing, since the translator would also be confused. (Ex: the ML made eye contact with a friend but didn't say anything. Next paragraph he talks about the friend saying something even though it wasn't explicitly written.) Small missing pieces like this made the actual story awkward to follow but it was fine in the end.

IT PUTS THE 'COM' IN ROM-COM

I like how this story takes itself lightly and this is exemplified through the FL. She's pretty direct and blunt. Her mission in the beginning is to find a worthwhile husband before she turns 16 (despite a premonition that she'll jinx her future husband that was made when she was a newborn) and she's very thick-skinned when doing this task. She meets the ML, who's a demoted general that's just safeguarding the demons in the Imperial Mausoleum now, and gets entangled with him. They end up falling in love but play a game of back-and-forth as the ML tries to undertake his demon blood task as he turns 25 (it's a life-or-death situation) and other external forces push and pull them.

Honestly I can see this as a Cdrama because they love to employ back-and-forthness between the main leads and A Match Made in Heaven follows this trend. It's not much angst, since the book itself is light (and the FL's antics make the stakes even lower), but still a bit frustrating to read and overall lends this story an almost childish tone. Another funny detail, though, is how the FL imagines different tropes (he fell for me at first sight, he'll catch me if I fall, etc), but reality is totally different. Homegirl really lives in her own world, in her head. Luckily, the ML recognizes this and is pretty patient and tries to please her. The ML is stoic at first and tries to push the FL away (due to trying to protect her) but Xin Mei is pretty persistent and of course he can't resist her blunt fortitude. Like I said, there are a bunch of external forces that create a push-and-pull tension but their feelings are unwavering from start to finish.

GREAT SUPPORTING CAST

What a riot! From the mouse demon who literally writes tragic fanfics of our main couple to the immortal who has a one-way crush on the FL, I think the author did a great job in writing the supporting characters. They're meant not to be taken seriously, which adds to the fun. A potential con of this aspect is not enough depth, especially when it came to the ML's mother and her (lack of) feelings. She was a bittersweet character that at least got a little character development throughout the story.

A NOTE ON AGES THOUGH

I know the age of 'adulthood' in historical China was like, 16, but that still kind of rubs me the wrong way. Anyway, in this story the FL is turning 16 and the ML is about to turn 25. It's not a huge age gap by any means, but honestly I would've preferred it if she was at least 18 (but that's just my Westernized standard of age during modern times showing). Anyway, there are consensual s*x scenes too (not very smutty, just vague descriptions) and at this point I'm just thankful the FL is so enthusiastic about it, lol.

OVERALL

It's a quick read and has a shoujo-like atmosphere with a likable heroine and her quest to getting a husband and living happily with him. The ML is your typical "cold on the outside, caring on the inside" lead but it's sweet how patient he is with the FL (ex: love the scenes where the FL wipes her oily fingers on the ML's robes and they kinda pretend not to notice - lol!). It's a pretty good mix of action/adventure + romance, so I would recommend it for a quick and fun time!

TL;DR Read this if you're into:

  • A FL who's not afraid of being direct and chasing after what she wants
  • A couple that goes back-and-forth according to the storyline
  • A xuanhuan that's trope-y but also not afraid to make fun of tropes as well
  • Super quirky supporting characters who add color to the story
  • A light, comedic tone set in an intense, demon-filled world
  • And a happy ending!
