“I quit being a Hero.”

Leaving behind those words, I separated from my allies and began a life of retirement in a village in the middle of a mountain.

Separating myself from a life of fighting the demon lord, I had a rich life cultivating a field and intermingling with the villagers.

At the time my life finally began to stabilize, a woman came to visit.

“I am called the demon lord Isvel…geh, you! The Hero!?”

“The demon lord!?”

Before my eyes was my natural enemy, the demon lord. According to her story, she also seems to have come to retire.

Since then began the strange life of retirement of me and the demon lord.

“You’re not really putting your back into it are you?”

“Shut up! I’ve never worked in a farm!”

… I’ve been anxious about it from the beginning.

Clichéd, hackneyed, trite, predictable, a regurgitation of ideas better expressed elsewhere. That's what I kept thinking as I read, and I got bored pretty darn quickly. There are a few redeeming features - although poorly implemented, the village full of retired badasses is kind of an entertaining concept, and if you like cutesy unrealistic 'romantic' dialogue then I've seen worse, but all told there are probably better uses for your time than reading this. There's nothing actively offensive about it... it's just boring.

The MC is a bloody idiot throughout the story (at least so far), letting his enemies finish all the prep and then let them escape and keep causing him trouble, because he's so s*upid he never managed to grow as a person, even though, supposedly, he is a former hero. For once, in your goddamn life, how about you defeat the enemy (that you encounter the Nth time because you've so far been too s*upid to interrupt their prep time despite being right there) before they finish their prep for... more>> escape? No? Too hard for you? Then just die and let someone competent become the MC and maybe we'll get somewhere with this story. <<less

I had to skim the last 20 chapters (except the very last 2). The story got filled with more and more internal inconsistancies and contrived occurrences. Everything was kind of just mashed together in the last arc.

With that said, I actually can't really disagree with many of the other reviews. It just hit me differently. By the time I got to the last chapter I started to feel a disconnect from the character to the point that I couldn't enjoy the ending.

The story did finish and it wasn't utterly terrible,... more>> just not worth it to me. My biggest complaint is that there was little about retired life outside the first 10 chapter and that's what I came in for... <<less

Just the usual fantasy adventure stuff. Nothing new here. Ex hero and ex maou retired from their position then become adventurers

This novel, I don't know how to call it as anything but awful. There will be many moments where you'd hold your head, groan, and ask why'd it go this way. Many things could've been done better imho, like, to make reading this novel more enjoyable and to make narration that really could draw the readers into the story. Luckily it has only 85 chapters so I managed to push through until the end with sheer willpower alone. The only saving grace is that the ending is quite satisfying. If... more>> not for that I'd have rated this novel two stars or lower.

TLDR of an already super short review: It sucks, but the ending might give you a satisfying feeling. Read it if you have nothing to do. <<less

it's simply not good. The writing is terribly boring, even for a Japanese light novel. It feels more like a rough draft or an outline of what should happen in the novel before its actually WRITTEN. The way the demon lord and the hero end up living together is so forced that it's obvious the author didn't really care how it happened.

Hero buys land and house.

Demon lord arrives in village with no money.

Villager says "when something like this happens, the rule is the new comer (demon lord) lives with... more>> the new villager (hero).

.. what??.. if someone shows up broke and wants to live there, the other new person who actually paid for the lot and land has to let them live with them?... It's so.. s*upid.

The author just forcing whatever he wants to happen without relying on common sense plus the utter lack of any descriptions, world building, or character building makes this novel a terrible read. Just an awful novel that tried clinging on to the "demon lord x hero" trope.

A must skip.

Side note.. I might get some hate for this, but... this has only furthered my belief that Japanese light novels have an extremely low bar for quality. Regardless of whether or not the story itself is bad, Japanese novels have always been subpar when it comes to writing quality in general as opposed to Chinese novels, usually anyway. <<less
