There's nothing wrong with a yandere ML - that's just the genre of the book and it is fiction (aka no real people are being locked in a black room lol), so no harm done. The title itself should be a red flag, but for me personally, I like this sort of plot - it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

But the novel itself was not written well (in my opinion). Here's why:

    • The flow is awkward - or maybe it would be better to say that the novel feels rushed? There's a lot of showing and not telling, and at times it feels like we're reading a summary of what happens. Things are explained with a wave of the author's hand and without warning we'll be thrown into a time skip. When the MC gets -
      Spoiler

ill/the aftermath of being poisoned hits her, we constantly fluctuate between her getting better and worse. There's no real logical flow between either.

      [collapse]
    • Characters' motivations/actions are confusing - as in they don't make sense at times. No one questions the MC's sudden change in behavior as she transmigrates into the original body, not even her mother (who should know her the most?). The ML notices it briefly in the beginning before deciding suddenly that he doesn't care. The MC and the ML will fight (she'll even go as far as to say she loves another man) and... nothing happens? They just act like that whole argument didn't take place? Hell, when the MC -
      Spoiler

comes back from the literal dead, no one f*cking asks what happened. The ML ignoring it is fine, he's delusional and insane. Her son not asking is also somewhat understandable, as he's young and just wants his mom back. The reactions of everyone else is just weird. The MC gives some wishy-washy explanation to her mom that someone saved her, and despite her mom literally seeing/double checking her corpse, her mom just takes it? WTF.

      [collapse]
    • The novel is a bit... shallow? This could just be me, but I honestly don't understand how people are crying from this novel. Trust me, I love tragedies and angst but this? On a scale of one to ten with one being not sad at all and ten being outright sobbing, this was maybe at a two? The backstory was, well, lackluster and predictable -
      Spoiler

in a previous life he killed her to become emperor

      [collapse]

but that was probably just because it was talked about at a very shallow level. The whole -

reincarnation/transmigration thing is just kinda not explained. Some random taoist appears and provides absolutely no insight to anything LOL.

Overall, did I enjoy the novel? Sure, I managed to finish it for one, and it has that yandere ML trope that I like. Will I forget about it in a few days? Also yes, because as mentioned earlier, it had flaws and didn't blow my mind.

A 2.5/5.0 stars for me.

It was hard to wrap around the fact that male characters who are essentially abusive and terrible to women got the happy ending they so clearly did not deserve. Both Song Luan and Ayun must have done something unforgivable somewhere in their past lives to constantly be entangled with the men the ended up with. Both were trapped one in a gilded cage and the other in a forced marriage. I will choose to believe that Ayun and Song Luan successfully ran away together because girls supporting girls is the... more>> best happy ending they deserve. <<less

This is no romance at all. Don't expect their love to be amazing. The FL mostly stayed for her children and is nonchalant towards the ML. It may look cute but it's far from just cute, it's a sad dark story from beginning until the end. I read this mostly because of the children but I like dark stories as well so I don't find this to be bad.

wow! I really love the ML. The ML is my kind of type (not in RL u know just in the book). For the ML character!!!!!! Im searching this character in my whole life lol (since I read yandere) (don't blame me pls idk why my asian a*s love this)
He is perfect. I mean he is perfectly described as an obsessive, possessive & yandere character.

If I were an FL, I would obey and wouldn't make ML angry, because when ML was angry ML would be silent and... more>> stare sharply/violently, it was really scary than cursing.

you know guys, idk how to described how cool this is. But, actually (no offense) FL kinda s*upid : (sometimes I can't help but cursing FL bc of her foolishness. But, her foolishness, makes ML looks more yandere and im here for it.

the ending is not my cup of tea. I find this romance a little annoying. When the flowers are not blooming properly, the author presents a new problem. And this happened over and over again. So I was not satisfied with the ending T-T I want more lovey dovey x yandere. Not dry one T-T <<less

This is so good

don't underestimate the tragedy tag. This is definitely a tragedy-romance between the ML and MC

I love how the supposed to be villain, is not really a villain. She has a reason to be that unruly and unreasonable ... more>>
Spoiler

at first, the wife is in love with her husband, but then, she remember the tragedy in her previous lifetime, and I couldn't blame her hatred towards her husband. He deserves it

[collapse]

I think, the word "love" is not something that you can say easily like that

And if someone love you so wholeheartedly like MC in her previous lifetime, then you better cherish it, or you will regret it later, just like ML, and maybe need to pay it for multiple lifetimes

ML regretted is so great that he carried it into his next lifetime, but MC hatred is greater

The saddest part is, when she love you, you didn't even bat an eye, . When she finally let you go, you desperately hold her, but she doesn't even feel anything towards you. She is so tired of your unreasonable love, and end up too tired to hate you moreover love you. No love, no hatreds

At the end of the novel, the only question remains in my head is, will she ever love him in this lifetime? Or will this curse continue until the next lifetime?

Some people might think that this is a bad ending. But I think, it is not. It is a satisfying ending. An ending that definitely suit the MC and ML. I can't imagine another ending that will suit it better <<less

The truth, the translator of this novel is my new crush. Like, totally punctual with the dates of new chapter (bc I read it when it was still on emission like, since ch. 20, but I'm not like them and I'm not punctual at the time to make a review, sorry :c) I created this account just to throw them flowers, and to give a good punctuation bc of them, too (and the novel obvs).

The story was what I expected to receive. A straight-up yandere ML. No a yandere-ish soft... more>> male character that ppl could romanticize. The FL is okay, I don't dislike her nor hate her. She's shown as someone who knows to pick her battles, and has a 'spoiled child' attitude that can be considered somewhat cute. At least, from ML eyes. I don't think is cute, but is not bad either.

At points I was like "i can't with this anymore" bc it was way too sad. In the end, it still wasn't The Happy Ending, but it was something I was able to accept (when I ended the novel, I felt like the lorax accepting the marshmellow).

Every relationship shown in this novel is yandere-like. Beware of the tags, please!

It was something beautiful you did here, translator, and author. The ML didn't had the complete control of everything and couldn't do as he wished, nor the FL. That is why it's heart-breaking.

Spoiler

I still hope that someday, the FL will like him a lil bit, like little Zhao sometimes thought :,)

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also, I got somewhat angry when the "third opportunity with Song Luan" was when she transmigrated that late and couldn't escape from the plot. Like, that's cheating, taoist master! It wasn't a COMPLETE 3rd opportunity, damn!

I truly, deeply and whole heartedly love this novel. I love novels that cause me heartache and that makes me feel complex emotions.

This whole novel made me torn between right and wrong, from one side to another but the beauty of it, at least for me, was that I understood both sides and their complex situation.

It's not the perfect novel, honestly there's no such thing as the perfect novel but I truly loved this novel with all of my heart. Would love to read other works by the same author... more>> if possible ofc. <<less

this is surprisingly good. Definitely has a yandere and it seems like the typical transmigrating and holding onto a big thigh and then abrupt yandere ply in the first part of the novel, but it develops into something more interesting than that.

you will need to hit at least chapter 70 or so for things to become less cliche (though I did still enjoy it before that but hey I'm a sucker for transmigration stores)

the story involves

3 lifetimes which intersect with one another and help to explain why characters acted the way they did.

MC's past life

(spoiler)

as a princess was super heartbreaking and because of that, there was a cause and effect into her next life (original body before transmigration). And because of this we can see why the original body acted the way she did.

the concept is very interesting and is what put the novel apart from the rest of transmigration novels. It was a unique idea I hadn't come across so far (at least not fleshed out like this

[collapse]

there wasn't much face-slapping scheming (rare for a ancient chinese novel) but there was drama between the leads. Side characters were pretty interesting (though one dimensional at times). I really enjoyed the interactions between MC and her maiden family. The emperor and his childhood friend
Spoiler

is the typical yandere story. Sadly for the poor girl

my poor sunshine boy huai jin is so in love with the MC but it just wasn't meant to be :'- (

one gripe I have is that

Spoiler

i don't really understand why ML fell so hard for MC after she transmigrated but I'm going to say it's a combination of his control issues and the fact that they have fate together. Also it is a little sad that MC doesn't seem to love ML by the end but hey. That's part of the effect past lives and with how she was treated, I'm not surprised.

all in all an enjoyable read! Give it a try and it gets more interesting in the last third. <<less

Even though it feels like its a happy ending, I can't help but think if the MC really like the ML?

This is just so sad. I wasn't going expecting that it would have so much angst. If I would have known I wouldn't read this at all since I'm a emotional reader lmao and I hate crying.

I love this. But I was not content with the ending. Maybe I just want her to say that she loves him or something. <<less

I think the story deserve a higher rating as far as the progress and the translator's effort into translating this story. It is quite logical and the development make sense. I think the main character is not a weak person or s*upid because she is living in an environment where she had no power to change her relationship with the ML. I like the story and its realistic approach as far as I can see right now.

I am very conflicted with this story. The whole story has so much bitterness for the FL and ml, I think the author doesnt have a lovelife when she/he wrote this. I really like the first part of the novel, it shows the vulnerability of a woman in the past and how powerless they are in their own households.

In the middle part of the jovel the author decided to add dog blood drama and so much angst that it irritated me because both FL and ML doesnt deserve to suffer... more>> that much.

Gave it 4 stars because I didnt like how bland the FL turned out in the later chapters. <<less

Ayo, this novel haunts me to this day, even though I read it years ago. I will not be rereading it either, since it's lowkey traumatic.

It is NAWT a romance, it is a psychological thriller. True yandere, not the fun kind.

I'd like to suggest a horror or tragedy tag. I'm annoyed by the 1 star reviews from people who didn't know what they were getting into.

the translation rocks, and it is a truly interesting and compelling story.

First of all how is this even a romance novel? I don’t know who is more sick in the head, the writers, the characters or the people who are reviewing this as romantic. There is a line in the novel where it says the ML ‘never considered divorce' like this was unthinkable, however poisoning her to death is obviously a normal thing to do?! He gets pleasure from making the FL cry, liking her tears and pinching her to cause bruises, it make him happy when she is sad and... more>> looks like he could break her, this is why he falls in love with her?! Now I know people are into all sorts of kinky things behind closed doors but abuse surly should not be something we are romanticising as women- like if you agree with me. And before anyone pipes up that she did awful things to him and made him "wear a green hat" blah, blah, blah at this part of the story none of that has happened yet, at most she’s flirted with some guys which whilst not pleasant surly this isn’t a cause for someone to poison you to death! Even if she did all those things from the original story, you know divorce her maybe or call the authorities. Also I’m getting really tired of this narrative where women are always scheming to get men, while men are all upright and just enduring these women schemes! Please men are just as despicable if not worse when it comes to infidelity or using the opposite s*x, hmph, the ML is a psychopath who either want to kill or cage the FL this isn’t romantic, its sick. <<less

A good read when you are reading for something angsty amd fluffs. I was reading curiously to see how it ends but chapter 71 was just so heartbreaking.
The twist and turn and how fate controlled them and they couldn't do anything to stop it. Love, betrayal, disappointment, obsession, guilt, frustration, punishment, retribution, indifference, helplessness but they couldnt change fate, one was helpless and another was obsessed.
We could see how it will go but the way to it was not abrupt so I really like the author's... more>> way.
The ending just felt right because the author built up this serenity around them that we wont feel it was bad or sad or happy. Just as they say it is good just because they accepted the reality even if they were happy or pretending to be happy.

Basically,

Spoiler

3 lifetimes is shown, in all those lifes FL loved and died in the hand of ML but ML didnt felt anything in 2lives, he just carried on maybe with little to no guilt and a bit loneliness which was overshadowed by his greed for power, throne and ambition. In 3rd life he loved her obsessively got guilt striken by killing her. I hated how even after dying she had to go back again to him as dictated by fate and her curse (and his obsession which bounded her fate with him for 3 lifes) and live without freedom. Finally she didnt feel any emotion towards him (solace to her) but he remembered all his previous life of how he killed her (punishment for him) (A taoist was shown who swept her feeling for ML which was like meh but since it is a novel where death person can just so back, this little thing didnt matter.)
The built up of indifference of FL towards ML and his guilt towards FL at the ending made it just right ending. ML also did many things for her, he tolerated pain to bring her soul back but the one who made the FL like that was also him. Somehow their first life reminded a bit of eastern palace.

[collapse]

The ML is a typical dominating man who is obsessed to the point he wants to keep her next to him even if she doesnt like him which in turn torture both of them.
Spoiler

He also got his punishment as he is left with his guilt and has to live with her without her love and with indifference. All previous lifetimes where he killed her and her love and now he has been robbed of her love

[collapse]
FL is smart but so helpless in all this, bound to this ill fate. You cant help but be sad for her. Even in death she was not given freedom. But the end brings solace to her and ended this cycle of ill fated entanglement.

I really like the author after this story and will check out other stories. I have do much to say about this novel but just this much is enough. Everyone got their share of happiness and sadness. Give it a read without dropping it and you will definitely think a bit about the end and how justified it was.
Spoiler

ML was a hero turned villian to her, robbing her of freedom but since doesnt have any feelings at end she isnt disappointed with him and just living her life accepting the truth that she wont be able to go away. The ML got what he obsessed over but not what he needed: her love. He accepts all his deeds and live with the guilt and her indifference thus getting his punishment. No more resentment that will brinf their next lifes to this ill fate thus breaking the cycle.

a pretty solid story that carried out everything promised.

i didn't quite understand some elements, such as the princess abusing a child for no reason and the "3 lives" thing not making much sense. (There's also misogyny because everyone shits on the MC for hooking up with other dudes even though it was the norm for men to have multiple concubines but that's to be expected from a story set in ancient china)

honestly, the only real issue I have with this is ayun and the emperor. You have the emperor,... more>> a toxic, emotionally abusive r@pist who openly cheats on the only woman he claims to love dearly and has the f*cking GALL to get pissed when ayun lies about getting married; emperors literally had harems of 3000 women MINIMUM. I don't wanna hear shit. The fact that the ML was able to keep his harem empty for his entire life of this shitty emperor can't because he just can't keep it in his pants shows a lot.

i cant really blame ayun for being in this relationship because it's toxic, there's a huge power dynamic, and the emperor is constantly manipulating and emotionally abusing her - but dear lord do I want to. She forgives him for his transgressions so easily and is STILL in love with him. It's so annoying to read how easy she is to manipulate and qkdbwjfj someone save her, , , <<less

To provide some context for this review, I am writing a review of this novel by treating it as a tragedy novel, not a romance novel.

Pretty basic starting trope: girl transmigrates into historical/novel setting into someone who was disliked and killed by husband so now she tries to get him to like her so he doesn't kill her. However, this novel definitely builds the characters in a way that makes it stand out from other novels that use this trope.

The MC is very relatable and down-to-earth ... more>>
Spoiler

she obviously doesn't want to stay with her husband (after all he was supposed to kill her) and it was kind of refreshing to have an MC who didn't just immediately fall in love with the ML just because he is handsome. The MC knows what kind of guy will make her happy, and she knows that the ML never will.

[collapse]

The ML is unhealthily obsessive, and the MC knows it. She has legitimate concerns about his personality (unlike MCs in other novels who just ignore toxic behavior), and these concerns are repeatedly mentioned. I never felt like the author was romanticizing the ML's toxic traits.
Spoiler

To me, the ML gets what's coming for him several points in the story, which stopped the plot from just being MC gets bullied over and over again by ML while nothing goes wrong for the ML. The ML basically loses all chance of the MC ever actually loving him because he has to force her to get an abortion so she doesn't die (it's a long story but it will make sense if you read the novel). Furthermore, when the MC dies as a result of the poison the ML used on her like two years ago, the ML once again suffers for the way he acted, which again kept the novel from just being the MC's failure to escape from the ML.

[collapse]

There are some pretty clear triggers in the story, so make sure you read the tags on NU.

Again, I think of this as a tragedy novel, so don't expect a happy ending for our MC.
Spoiler

Although the ending of the MC basically just giving up and deciding to live with the ML so she can raise her kids isn't a happy ending, it felt like a reasonable/realistic ending for our MC to take, so I didn't hate it (I mean I obviously would have preferred for her to take the kids and run, but let's be real the ML had too much power for that to realistically happen in this story).

[collapse]
I also liked that this story was fairly short and there were very few fillers. <<less

Please read tags and take warnings about this novel seriously. Cuz I didn’t read them and was triggered. The main lead Zhao Nanyu is obsessive af, twisted, and very messed up. He feels like he is worthless in society because of how he is treated and his treatment from society. Zhao Nanyu takes all the negative emotions out on his wife, the MC Song Luan. When he gets power, oh boy, that ish goes right to his head and he becomes even worse.

Spoiler

Zhao Nanyu poisons Song Luan slowly over years, falls in love with her, r*pes her consistently, forces her to get pregnant, forces her to have an abortion, traps her in the house, stabs her in the heart with a knife, etc. I can go on, but I don’t wanna.

[collapse]

I really don’t know how people can glamorize this type of relationship. It’s unhealthy af, clear power unbalance, Zhao Nanyu r*pes Song Luan consistently, he never considers her feelings even after falling in love with her. He is a manipulator and just a very toxic individual. This the type of relationship I don’t wanna be in or see any of my loved ones fall into. The only way out is death, literally.

Besides being triggered heavily by this novel, it was ok. There were definite character development, always happy when I see that. The plot was ok too, could have been better tbh. Overall, for me, this novel was ok. Can’t give it 5 stars. 3 stars was the best I can give. <<less

for those of you who hate the ML & want him to get redemption

Spoiler

he's actually quite pitiful. In his first life, he was a prince who started a rebellion and personally killed the MC. They were quite in love back then, but he wanted the throne. If he let the princess live, she would not be able to love him, or stay married to him. She would've lived a life of humiliation, so he killed her himself.

But he truly did regret it. Every night he would dream of her and cry, he even had a dream about the "powerful minister" novel where he killed her. He made a deal with the taoist priest, that he would be able to meet her in the next three lifetimes; but she would not love him. If she does, then she will die.

and after the three lifetimes are over, the girl will reincarnate without memories of her past while the male lead will suffer for eternity with the memories of them being in love and him killing her in three lives. He would reincarnate as well, but he will never meet her again

[collapse]

although I do feel bad for the fl, i'd like to imagine that in her next life, she has a great family and lives a good life without her memories of her yandere husband. :D

the male lead on the other hand, truly gets his redemption.

such a bittersweet ending, but I love it. <<less
