Giga boring snorefest. Character wakes up and is too OP. He instantly gets a boring harem filled with boring characters and follows a boring plot with boring antagonists. There isn't a single thing I can think of that is interesting about this novel. It's essentially a power fantasy where there is zero progression because the character is op on day 1. When you're this strong in an adventure/fantasy story there is no mystery, intrigue or danger at all.

Since I’m the second person to post a review, hopefully it’ll get around before idiots start posting.

You need to take this series with a grain of salt, it’s not meant to be a serious story there is no bullsh*t drama that makes you hate the story, the main cast have so many plot armors that there is no chance of anything bad happening, (normally.)

It’s meant to be a light hearted story, so that’s what you need to take it as, the plot is shallow, and needs to be... more>> viewed as something more like a slice of life, it’s literally about the MC and him traveling this new world he was transported to, and all the things happening around him

In this world it’s not unusual to have s*aves, (especially) women so the MC having a harem is no surprise, that said it’s not like these other shitty stories where it’s all about r*pe, and turning women into the MC’s whore’s, all the girls with him have a special circumstance, some cliche but none of it is forced.

Most of them being little girls, the MC is a lolicon (lol, once you read this you’ll see why that’s funny,) any way poor Satou despite not even looking for girls to be in his harem, is constantly put into situations where more and more girls are thrown at him, normally even this kind young man that just want’s to essentially chill and travel the world would not be so adverse to it, but 9/10 times it’s a little loli, so this ‘harem’ of his is more like he has a big family and he is the parent/big brother.

So honestly just read the story, believe me if you just want a light hearted read with a low-key OP MC, actually decent fight scenes where the author actually has a brain, and a fluffy harem/romance, you’ll love it, so read the damn book already.

And no he isn't a dense whiny MC, he has no problems with being around girls, so if you're looking for one you won't find it here. <<less

Advice: Read the Web Novel instead of the Light Novel.

The Light Novel Gets rid of the best action scenes. Tries to add foreshadow and other literary devices but most of them feel forced or just random information drops. Since they still try to stick to the original story overall, plot holes are pretty much added everywhere.

People who should have died are now saved just because. Now don't get me wrong, in the WN he later on can save everyone due to how OP he was. But early on due to... more>> his inexperience, not everyone could be saved. That part built up the character. Now he is pretty much could save everyone from day 1.

Aka, the character is made far more generic.

The goal of the LN seem to be to widen audiences while same time try to differentiate the content enough from the free WN. But the results are pretty bad.

Again, read the WN. It is worth reading. This? Makes me cringe the more I read it. I still read it due to being a fan of the franchise, but its painful. <<less

The beginning of it is interesting. Though its a popular theme on how its MC gets transported to a world that runs in a game system with all his max stat and inventory.. it feels like it have its own special world.

But then again,... instead of going through with its rpg elements, it starts to go the harem gathering route.. with pretty much everyone throwing herself at him. And comes the daily life of this dude with his girls.. which in my oppinion.. pretty boring.

Death March is like the ultimate "slice of life" meets "action" and "adventure". There are game mechanics involved, s*aves (don't worry MC does not lust for them, he just took them in cause he's nice), and food, tons of food. There are underlying plots and conspiracies but that's not really the main purpose of the story. This is more like the MC decided to take a leisurely tour of another world and occasionally has to save it. Oh and MC is so OP, it's ridiculous. He's too busy enjoying his... more>> tour and likes his freedom too much to show off too much, though. <<less

extremely op protagonist. Story is quit good. 1st volume is worst (in my opinion) but it becomes better and better. Story has good action and is quit funny. Protagonist is calm and mature. Also he is not virg*n forever type of guy, he drinks when he wants, goes to brothels if he wants and is not into lolis (though most of his companions are lolis). Anyways it's quit fun to read.

In case of "Death march" it is too obvious that this is story written strictly for money and to please Japanese nerds. So we have pretty big collection of copies of herioc and romantic events provided by the most powerfull main character ever followed by a horde of girls. Overally LN is average as collection of romantic events is not a romantic story and collection of heroic events is not necesarilly a recipe for good novel. But lets say the truth. We do not look for belles-lettres here. So I... more>> think that if you like to feel yoursel like overpowered superhero collecting numerous girls then this is a story for you. I followed advices from forums and read WN first and it looks to be a good choice. LN is not finished yet so I will compare already translated part to WN version. The most advantage of WN is that it is almost finished (Sep 2019). Problem with LN is its lacking of availability. With present velocity LN will be translated in about 2021st. Reading WN and LN is like reading two stories from parallel worlds. Technically LN is better. We have more advanced sentences. Scenography and characters are described pretty decently. We know more or less when events take place. Lots of story is rewritten and thanks to this LN become quite logical version of WN. Few events are removed and greater number of other is added in LN. At least reader can understand more or less why girls fall in love with Satou. In WN it just happened somehow. Hopelessly s*upid descriptions of hiding his true identity by Satou are repaired. Holes in few subplots are patched. But repairing old mistakes author made new ones. Maybe he was too used to creating a blueprint at the end of WN or he was limited by publisher but writer followed with too many shortcuts. A lot of descriptions and dialogs from WN was replaced by one vague sentence. Because of that we do not understand fully some events. And more importantly LN has lost a lots of WN "magic". Some removed in LN theoretically not important events made WN more mature. WN was bit more close to fantasy action adventure. LN is more close to plain diary. I do not like side stories but in WN they suplemented pretty good main story. Additionally almost all "Death march" is written as POV so it is not possible to describe other people impressions witch adds emotions to "Death march". Side stories in WN helped with that problem. Another downside of LN is its lower difficulty level. At the beginning battles in WN looks better then in LN but it changes with time. Quality of WN with every chapter is gradually falling down when quality of LN looks better then I hope that overally LN will be better. As for now really decent and interesting main plot of searching and destroying evil mastermind looks the same. There is one woman that Satou truly loves but this main romantic subplot is the one of the most boring. Shamefully I cannot say that it is great novel but I like it.

Edit: Ranking modified after comparing to anoher novels <<less

Status: v8 - dropped
Hmm, where should I start it was enjoyable in the beginning but as the volumes carry on the novel becomes more and more dull that getting through a chapter within a months time is a miracle.

v6 was still alright and I enjoyed it, even though like most of the previous volumes, only the last 1 or 2 chapters were enjoyable, v7 was worse, I only partly enjoyed reading one of the chapters and the rest was so dull that I decided that if v8 wasn't any better it would... more>> be time to drop, because the plot of each volume follows pretty much similar path e.g. something happens MC is nearby and could stop it to see what the drill is if it is something bad, than he could take care of it, what is does is ignore it, play about with his loli harem and then the event he ignored comes back around in the last chapter and he has to clean up the end and 8 volumes of this same crap isn't enjoyable. I know the arguments are that its a slice of life, and even that part is poorly done, as its the same thing, food, lolis getting jealous of the MC, big b**bs that the MC wishes he could play with but the lolis are preventing him from doing and easily grasping magic and other stuff, read it once you don't mind it, read it 7 more times and you get tired. if you want to read this novel don't bother reading past v5/6 as it isn't worth it.

Original review below;

///i will start by saying that I did try the WN a while back which made me very hesitant towards the LN as in my eyes the WN is tr*sh compared to the LN! and it can be seen pretty much from the start as all the plot holes were handled beautifully in the LN! I never read too far with the WN so I was also really to know that the first volume handled the stuff until the point where I stopped with the WN which was a few chapters before the end of volume 2. Which the LN handles.

Truthfully this is also the very first JP isekai novel that I had ever tried and I enjoyed it a lot! Most of the time I pretty much hate game elements and the way they are handled in novels which is why I despise Korean Web Novels and most CN novels with the genre.... however it was done in really cool fashion in this novel and didn't make you sick of it! (One of the other reasons I hate the WN of this is because of how sh*t the game elements were!)

other than the stuff I mention above, the characters are pretty enjoyable including the MC and the female side characters which makes the novels all more worthwhile to check out! But remember to avaoid that garbage WN version as you might come to hate the series overall!

ps: suggest reading the official release as the fan translation from above has quite questionable translation. <<less

If being a loli slayer was an occupation, this MC would be a pro; nay, legendary. It's an OP Japanese MC that isn't afraid of b**bs, who also isn't a dick, this guy sounds pretty awesome already huh?

It's a fun and easy novel to read, good action, fun characters, very little to no drama, so just sit back and enjoy the read.

i remember few years ago reading the web version of death march, it's enjoyable but it start getting boring after satou got the chant orb and can use magic freely, he become so op like can create world or something, and start making harem everywhere, and I thought what kind of sh*t is this, so I decided to drop it.

this year I saw the light novel cover of death march vol 14 in yenpress page, so I think hey I remember this series, this is the shitty super op harem... more>> isekai stories I read before. At first I laughed at it, but decided to read the manga because it's been a long time, and I know the story is different for the web version and the light novel version, and the manga follow the light novel version, so I thought ok, let's try it.

And yes, the stories is different, after reading the manga, I bought the LN version from yenpress, and read it until vol 22 from other source.

it's more polished, more detailed, the pace is good, the worldbuilding is great, the foreshadowing also interesting, and more importantly satou is still op, but not annoying kind of op like the web version, no chant orb, so he still can't use magic freely, and the reason for his party member become strong because they're training with other warrior teacher and not because of power levelling like in the web version, the story is split with daily life and battle scene, overall it's really polished, and enjoyable to read.

for a new reader i'll recommend you to read the LN version first, and if you like it, you can read the web version next as alternate retelling of death march stories.

Death march is not the best isekai stories out there, but the LN version is above average and I can proudly recommend it to other people if they're looking for a decent isekai stories. <<less

I'm up to the 11th volume in the series. The start is like many other isekai. MC gets teleported to another world and ends up OP. Unlike other isekai, this story dosn't focus on action. The MC for the most part just wants to enjoy his new life and explore the world. So if you are beginning this series for action, then you will be disappointed. For the MC, traveling and exploring is his primary objective. Demons, monster, and related typical action isekai activity is secondary for him. If he... more>> feels that something will get in his way of sightseeing, traveling, or exploring, then he will use his use his OP stats to deal with it. In other words, he doesn't really want to any fighting unless it affects him. To summaries in a sentence, this is a slow paced story of an OP MC that is just being a tourist in the world he was isekai into while using his OP stats to enhance his journey. What I personally like from this series is the world building. Since he is focusing on traveling, he gets to talk to lots of locals and learn more about the world he was isekai into. This can range from whether monsters can be eaten, practicality of magic, to difference in how bathing works. So I would describe this as being interested in how the author writes about the mundane. This can be like when the MC crafts different items. Making a weapon, stove, or food isn't the exciting thing to write about, but is writen in a way that makes it interesting. This comes from the thoughts of the MC as he is making his item, the reactions of others to what he makes, and how he plans to expand to make his travels and daily life more comfortable and relaxed

Based on my preference, I would say there are two major issues with this series. The first one being the harem-like aspect of part of the story. Like 90% of the females he meets ends up liking him. I don't mind romance since its a genre I enjoy, but I don't like it when its not done well. With most the girls, it only takes like one thing for them to fall for him. The MC isn't dense and is not tring to make himself a harem which makes this less annoying. He is a 29 year old man in the body of a 15 year old, so most of the girls end up being pretty young but he just sees them as children. The second thing I would say that that he series suffers from (gets a little better as it story moves on) is too many character that the story is trying to follow. Without spoiling the characters, the story ends up following MC and his group as they travel for a total of 8 people. Because of this, at the start it was a bit difficult to follow who was who. Especially when the story would introduce more people that the MC would meet in his journey. Having this many characters makes it hard to develop their personality and at times they seem out of place. Different arcs were used to try and develop each of the chacters which is nice, but still makes the remaining people seem out of place when they are out of the spotlight. This is more apparent at the start, because as the story progesses, the author gets better at managing the large number of people in his story. By the way, Liza is my favorite character even if she isn't as developed as some of the other characters. Arisa at the start was just annoying to me but as the story progresses, her character began to rub off on me. <<less

The most calming novel i've read, I start reading at 2017 and still reading even until now, I lost count how many times I re-read this

The Character development and World building is really great, I especially like it when he goes from town to town, city to city, have leisure journey with his companions, making something, researching, upgrading his carriage, or even saving many countries from the demon lords.

i think that if I were isekai'ed I would prefer this kind of story but without much plot twist like demon god... more>> or something like that, a calming leisure life with your cute beastkin companions. <<less

One thing I hate and so I declare: There is no way the artist of the covers for the LN version is the same person. Should they be so then I apologize, but the covers suck. Also, read the LN version, it flows better even though it has infodumps. Because the LN tries to be more light, it leaves gaping holes in plot progression and characters. Same as what a few other people have said.

Again, this I declare, the art on the covers suck and ruin the atmosphere by making... more>> everybody look like a sh*tty shoujo character. Every time I see that art, it infects my reading of the LN and makes everyone look more generic. <<less

Hm, tried reading a bit of it after watching episode 1 to compare the LN and WN, totally different. It feels like they nerfed him to a degree, although the story does flow somewhat nicer. There's a bit in the WN that states he's immortal, which is how he survives the meteors. After the meteors, he's shown by the system log to have killed everything in the area, including a dragon god, gaining a number of titles. He also gains a bunch of loot, such as holy swords Excalibur, Durandal,... more>> Muramasa, etc. The immortality and God Slayer titles seem to be completely absent in the LN and they put that the holy swords (at least the one he tried) rejecting him from using it. They removed all the bits about allocating/acquiring skills at the beginning which I liked as well, so in my opinion, not as appealing. <<less

I suggest you read the Web Novel or Light Novel unofficial translation site's versions of it instead of the light novel published by the legitimate publishing company.

I feel when the official translators translated the Japanese version to English, quite a lot of things got... let's say 'white washed'.

For example; Pochi's catchphrase "nanodesu" changed to "sir!" or "Madam!"

... more>> It lost a lot of 'character' of the book after that slight change, because it occurs too frequently in the novel.

Either way, story has not changed much from WN to LN, just style of writing.

Really great series, one of my favorites. <<less

I'll offer my thoughts as to why *I* read and enjoy this series in the hope that other kindred readers don't otherwise pass over this series as a result of the polarized reviews.

I'm a relative newcomer to Japanese light novels, and for background info, I'd classify myself (today) as a casual fan of Anime. This, however, hasn't always been the case. I've sampled shows over the past 10+ years, but what I found never appealed to my tastes. I am a big fan of fantasy literature and fan culture (Steampunk,... more>> etc), and many of my friends are avid (rabid) Anime fans. Because of this, I found myself coming back to Anime every couple years, but failing to uncover whatever my friends found so compelling. Also worth noting is that I casually attended Anime conventions just to walk around and see all the geeks in their great costumes and soak up the fan enthusiasm. I would occasionally duck into a screening room, but typically left within 10 minutes from boredom.

So, a couple years ago, I decided to "give it one last go" and widely sampled as many shows as possible. In the process, I did find some Anime that I enjoyed (Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul, Parasyte) and eventually came across the Isekai genre. I started with SAO, which I greatly enjoyed, and then consumed whatever similar shows I could find (recommendations welcome!). Eventually, I came across Death March, and really enjoyed the Anime, so much so that I decided to read the Light Novels to follow Satou's further adventures. After the first couple chapters, I knew right away that I had found my new "cotton candy" reading indulgence.

Is Death March great literature? Absolutely not... it's written well enough (the English translation, anyways), and I acknowledge many of the flaws reported by other reviewers. When compared against classic and "serious" fantasy fiction, it's clear it was never intended to compete. Instead, this is a fan fiction-esque story with a casual and breezy style, that should appeal to older (nerdy male) readers who have perhaps become a bit jaded from the treadmill of routine high fantasy offerings. Instead, Death March (IMHO) largely falls in a "satire adjacent" category where the characters are earnest, but the author walks a fine line with a constant barrage of standard tropes (OP MC, Harem, Lolis, fan service) but pulls back just enough to keep the reader wondering if the author is being self-referential and wants you to laugh along with him. Overall, the plot moves along at a dizzying pace akin to an amus**ent park ride where each twist and turn presents a whimsical and fun encounter without getting bogged down as "serious" stories often become.

In the end, I rated this series a five-star solely based on the fact that it was a fun ride, kept me entertained, and left me anxiously awaiting the next release. In the end, I consider that Mission Accomplished. <<less

If you're too lazy to read and find the difference with WN, manga and anime follow the LN version. In short, LN is more toned down and refined/polished version of WN.

Some characters survived in LN. There are less mu*dering of people and less dawdling on the subject of s*avery, thievery, etc. There are still some of those scene but compared to LN, it toned down a lot. There are also new contents and quite a lot of changes in story lines. There are almost half a book new content in... more>> v3, thus book 3 WN ends on around the same spot as v4. <<less

The author keep draging the plot like if he dont want to end the story there isnt any real twist or surprise is full of all cliche in the other world series

The good points is that is easy to read and the characters bisides de MC (he become a complete as*hole in the last volumes) are very funny and lovely especially Arisa Tama and Pochi the story is funny but like I said doesnt have any real suspense and you can predict almost all that is going to happen if... more>> you read a few novels isekai type. <<less
