Fia, who was aiming to be a knight as the daughter of a knight, remembers her previous life as a “great saint” when she was on the verge of dying.

. . . Huh?

Saints are a revered profession because they’re so weakened and on the verge of extinction, right?

The only saintly power I use is the ‘lost magic’ that has become a fairy tale.

Come to think of it, in my previous life, the Demon Lord’s right hand man threatened to kill me if I was reincarnated as a saint.

If I use this kind of power, they’ll know that I am a saint and will probably kill me in one fell swoop.

. . . so I’ll become a knight as per my original intentions! I will live quietly!

Nah, I thought about it, but I’ll use the power I have because it’s too useful . . .

(spoilers, criticism and summary, reviewed after reading most of the first official volume)

The concept isn't anything new, an ordinary girl getting memories of her past life as a princess and a great Saint with unfathomable power, high level of knowledge and wisdom only natural for the descendants of royalty.

Spoiler

Now, she gets these memories, knowledgle and power whilst on the verge of death. The problem is that even after getting the knowledge, she stays ignorant of her previous incarnation's influence on the whole nation. She's also ignorant of what it means to be her current self, having the same hair and eye color as her previous self. She's deluding herself by saying that simply by not having any healing power, nobody will have any suspicions regarding her identity, even with her having all the other characteristics of the great saint. Lmao.

Spoiler

Also the conversations with the three cursed guys and how they mistook her as the goddess, who they thought had cursed them. Undoing their curse was obviously unbelievable in the current world's standards, so she chose to lie about some things... And when they assumed her to be the Goddess, she thinks they're playing some kind of play, and thinks to herself "oh well, I can't let their play go to waste". Like, really?

[collapse]

Also, her coincidentally saving

Spoiler

the black dragon after awakening her powers and getting him as a familiar was a typical way of getting a compatriot for the main character. It's just that she chose to ride on the legendary black dragon king because she was worried (rightfully so) that her sister will mobilize the entire domain for a search party for her. Thinking along the lines of "I wouldn't want my sister to cause havoc in the domain on my account", she decides to take a greater risk, possibly wreaking havoc in the entire world by letting everybody know how she's tamed the dragon king. Ok.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Another one of her useless antics is teaching a young and inexperienced saint how to make a better and unknown in the current times healing potion. Better, instead of letting the saintess gain experience in it by practicing slowly over time, it's as if she's itching to reveal her identity and her skills. She uses her own magic power, thereby almost instantaneously improving the young saint's magic circulation and creating a pond of a new healing potion in the process of teaching her. Definitely not suspicious, definitely untraceable.

[collapse]

The mc's families (both the previous and present one) are currently with little to no depth.

Spoiler

Her brothers from her previous life left her to die after her magic power was exhausted in the struggle to seal the demon king. The sealing was successful, yet the demon king's right hand tortured her afterwards to the death. Before her death she was getting cursed at by her brothers, because she was seemingly haughty just for being a great saint, yet now that she has no magic powet she's useless etc etc they also wished her the worst, hoping she gets r*ped by demons and toyed to death. Now the new family treats her as nonexistent (until she gets her black dragon familiar), with her father tacitly approving the neglect she was suffering because of her lack of talent. There's also one of her brothers seeing her as subhuman, that's also cute (the MC also thinks it's cute compared to her previous brothers).

[collapse]

Regarding the mc's personality, she's the cheerful and airheaded type, except sometimes dumbed down, because she can be perceptive, it's just that her perceptiveness is not working most of the time. Cheerful, yet greatly terrified of being found out as a previous great saint and current saint, afraid of once again being tormented to death, just because she's a saint.

[collapse]

With the things she went through and has the knowledge of she should at least consider some actions before doing them, and the way I see it is that, were she not that op, she'd be simply courting death.

So yeah, it's the typical shoujo with the FL being ultra dense and even getting dumbed down by the author even more seemingly for some "comedy" (e.g. the three guys worshipping her as the goddess). The FL constantly makes s*upid decisions which will obviously come back to bite her in the future. It's just that the FL is probably one of the most op beings currently alive, so her enemies in the future will probably be even more op (or she will stomp everyone until the final big bad comes in and she turns into a damsel in distress).

Even though I'm ranting about how the MC acts s*upid and some characters are unimpressive, there were some cute and fluffy moments. It also seems that the MC in her denseness can cause other characters to think and change their perspective (the potential MLs)
I'll probably continue reading this just to see how her idiotic family will keep treating her. Oh, and also to see how long she can be the titular "secret" saint. <<less

I'm reading the official English release, which is really really good, so I was a little surprised at the ratings here - though I can't say anything about any translated versions others may have read.

Personally, I was so entertained I couldn't put the book down. Yes MC is powerful, but no more than many, many other stories. Yes in some ways she's dense, but she's also clever and I like the way the other characters around her fully realize that she isn't always understanding the impact of what she says... more>> and does.

I like the side characters, I can't wait to read more, and the backstory is interesting and while not entirely unique, also not exactly like anything I've read before.

The author can be HILARIOUS. I very literally laughed out loud a couple times while I was reading. If you aren't sure if you'd like the book and you come across a physical copy read the authors note in the back - it doesn't have spoilers and if you enjoy it you'll probably like the story itself. <<less

I like this. For the first time I see a "reincarnated as a saint" story and it doesn't have reverse harem in it!

The nice thing about this novel is, frankly, the near complete lack of romance. Oh sure, shoujo novels always have handsome men pining for the "worthless" lady, but in this novel their relationship is less romantic and more friendly, and that allows for all sorts of shenanigans you can't do with romance novels

Those shenanigans are genuinely funny. I don't think they're absolutely hilarious, but they're great and draws... more>> quite a few laughs

The characters do act pretty dumb to make the story work, but hey, it makes for funny moments so that's a good trade off

One thing that bothers me is how many side stories the author puts out. These "side stories" are most of the time canon stories told from another party's perspective. Side stories are fine but there are too many of them. About 30% of volume 3 is comprised entirely of side stories, half of which are unimportant. It makes for a distraction but feels like it inflates the numbers <<less

Oh seriously, my eyes have never rolled this far back. I almost lost them, you see.

The story is as cliche and the FL is as Mary Sue as you can get.

Hell, even the side characters are there to show off how OP she is.

There were three scenes in particular that made me laugh at how ridiculous the story was:

Spoiler

Fia (the FL) became a knight of the first brigade, and Fabian (our potential ML? Not that I particularly care about him) went, "oh you know the first brigade is only for knights who have trained for ten years or more so we must be very very special snowflakes!" -- this was the essence of his words.

And then later on, the prince-captain of ALL the captains was described to have defeated all twenty, TWENTY, 20, captains simultaneously. I bet the author was expecting us to go: OMO, what a strong captain-prince!

No. I went: wow, how pathetically weak are those twenty captains?

This prince dude probably trains less than them given how he is a prince, needs to do paperwork and diplomatic stuff, and has been named the next heir instead of his brother. So you're telling me this guy, who trains less than those captains who trained every moment of their lives, defeated them like flies? Right. He's not strong. They're just weak.

And scene number 3 that made me give up on the series: everything is so artificially forced and inorganic. During the initiation, the FL heard that one of the knights recruits would be giving an impromptu speech, while another would be selected to battle a senior battle randomly. She worried that she would have to give the speech. HA! EVERYONE, EVERYONE with a brain could tell that she would be the knight recruit who would have to battle a senior knight and everyone would fawn over her. That scene was so forced and irritating to read about.

[collapse]

Perhaps I'm being overly harsh, but yeah, read this if you like unnaturally forced scenes of the FL being OP and bland side characters. <<less

This is your pretty typical fantasy light novel about an OP protagonist and their steadily growing cult of worshippers. It doesn't do much new, but I appreciate that it's more focused on plot and humor than on any romance that we know won't go anywhere, and the humor is on-point. The protagonist is super dense, but in a funny way.

The official release is available on Amazon under the title "A Tale of the Secret Saint, " if you want to read it. The translation is quite good.

It's a concept we've seen done many times before but at least the MC is kind of hilarious. (Also the manga art is good)

As always MC is dense and can't understand the implications of her actions and influence (both past and present lives)

I like how side characters kind of recognise that she's dense and not just obliviously shove everything under the rug.

Overall I'd say 2.4 stars
