The Failure Alchemist of the Royal Capital ~My Job Is a Failure So, I’ll Manage My Store Carefreely.~

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

I am Daisy von Preslaria. Even though I was born in a viscount family that produces excellent magicians, I was the only one in my family that was granted the failure job, Alchemist.

Since this has happened, let’s try studying hard and become independent as a worthy alchemist!

The five-year-old girl resolved and began to make potions by trial and error. Thanks to her Appraisal skill that she secretly possessed, let alone misfortune, the finished product was of high-quality never seen anywhere!

She cultivated medicinal herbs, indulged herself in research, went harvesting, and opened a store.

This is a story of an alchemist living carefreely, sometimes fervently, while being helped by various people (by non-humans too).

Translator here. I know people are going to do so even if I say it, but I'll still do so anyway. Please do not give a rating until you finish roughly up to chapter 5.

Reason why:

Spoiler

I have, never in all my time translating, ever found that a girl making f**king water to be so appealing. I would've majored in science if I learned how to make distilled water like her.

[collapse]

You follow the main character, Daisy, who receives a "bad job". Unlike all the other sh*ty "bad job" novels, this one takes a different direction. In fact, being an alchemist is not even that bad of a job, and only considered "bad" in noble society. The nobles consider it a bad job because it's hard to find a marriage and that's it. In other words, the title is clickbait to get readers initially interested. Gotchu.

As for the alchemy portion, I feel like the author was inspired by the Atelier video game franchise. This is, however, what makes the novel so appealing for me personally, and why I started to translate this series. What we would find as "common sense" is not common sense for her and the people of this world. Let me remind you that this is NOT an ISEKAI nor SECOND CHANCE, thus we follow Daisy learn about the world and knowledge we take for granted.

This is not as slice-of-life as you would expect. The novel is more about exploring the world and constantly improving her alchemy. I hope you give this novel a try for the first arc before judging anything. <<less

I'm so torn on this review - I think the translator has done a great job translating, but the story itself is driving me crazy. The parents seem great at first, but it has turned into literal child exploitation with no awareness of that fact.

She invented a completely new recipe that the average alchemist could never make, right. That's just it - they charge three times the regular price because it's 3 times as effective. That's ridiculous!! She's the only person in the world who can do this, she has... more>> to personally raise the ingredients herself doing actual magic, and since she's 5 she can only make a handful per day. So what do they do? If you don't say charge something like 300, 000 times the cost of the regular potion, well, that's why ticket scalpers ruin events for everyone. If you sell something at too low of a price, a middle man will take advantage of that. So those potions could be resold for obscene amounts of money.

Just think of the military applications - you can reduce your supply demands for potions, which you have to haul with you on your invasion in slow, vulnerable supply wagons. So reducing the number of potions by 1/3rd would be a huge advantage, especially because the same potion can be used multiple times for more severe injuries. You just have to hurt the other team to put them out of action but your team has hack potions.

Which is why you charge 300, 000 times the price, because you need top-of-the-line security, cause that toddler would get spirited outta her exploitive parents' house in a jiffy. As a reminder, her father brokered his child who hasn't lost their baby teeth yet produce potions for the freaking MILITARY and at the King's command. Oh, and the parents are controlling this money on behalf of their kid. Since that always goes well with child superstars, right?

Anyway it isn't the translation that's bad, so all the stars are for them. The story itself broke my suspension of disbelief so hard, I went from pleasantly smiling at a cute little story to having my capitalist society alien symbiont punch out of my chest like America had been a face-hugger all along that imp**gnated me with strongly held beliefs about supply and demand, and the dangers of intellectual property theft in a world who apparently has not developed patent law.

Uhh... it's a cute story though. Unless you're into economics, or admire any famous entrepreneurs. <<less

It is a very cute and fun story but it isn't really going anywhere. It really just feels like the author is writing their idea of a blessed little girl having a blessed life in a fantasy world. Events happen from time to time but they aren't really important and get solved by MC's plot armor really quickly.

Spoiler

At one point, some monster attacks the town and the (7 year old) MC runs to the gates and hands out potions to the soldiers while they fight. She then gets some kind of super magic and uses it to beat the monster. Everybody is super happy with her but sadly some people still died. Two of those people were apparently the parents of a young catgirl who is now an orphan. The MC hires the orphan to be her maid and the orphan gets over the brutal death of her parents very quickly and is oh-so-happy to help bake bread for the MC from then on.

The quality is pretty low and it gets boring quickly but it is a nice light read while it's interesting. <<less

The story is reasonably enjoyable but the setting is full of problems and inconsistencies that will endlessly frustrate many readers. It really feels like the world exists for the main character to do their thing. It's just full of gaps the main character seems perfectly suited to fill. Technology and magic are well developed when the main character needs a tool to do something, but oddly inadequate whenever the main character's skill could be put on display. All the things she needs to do her work already exist, but it... more>> seems that no one else is capable of putting all the parts together.

It's a fictional work, filled with magic, gods, and different people, so I allow for some hand-waving that people think differently and perhaps in ways we don't consider "realistic". Unfortunately I feel that even after giving that kind of consideration, a lot of it still feels like the author hasn't given any thought to how anything would work in the world outside of what helps advance the main character's story. <<less

Kind of wholesome but of course, like other JP LIGHT novel, it's so light and OF COURSE SHE'S NOT A FAILURE. The setting that makes the alchemist position unpopular is too convenient. It start interesting as the writer explain how she get this to that, but after a while the OP scenes starts to come one by one. In general, so far, it's a wholesome semi-slice-of-life with cute MC.

Its yet another adorable story where any problems get sorted out within the same chapter if not by the next paragraph. I'll get tired of it soon enough (there's nothing special about this one), but its wholesome and a nice read.

The first chapter might feel heavy as it shows her life before being reborn but after that, it's a fluffy slice-of-life story about a little girl learning to do alchemy, gathering or growing ingredients.

I felt like another review needs to be addressed before people get the wrong idea.

"The parents seem great at first, but it has turned into literal child exploitation with no awareness of that fact."

This only proves how little they were paying attention to what they read, any time her potions are used or sold, she is paid for them.

... more>> "they charge three times the regular price because it's 3 times as effective. That's ridiculous!!"

This is basic business practice, higher quality goods cost more, and again, were they even paying attention? The items in question were 1.5 times the effect, not 3, and costed 3 times, when fantasy potions are involved, typically how things work is a slight increase in effectiveness has a large difference. <<less

I really enjoyed this series even though it is only the beginning. I really liked it because it fully explains why alchemist is a bad job in only a certain setting. Here are my favorite parts of the story at this current point. The family supports her despite being a Noble family and what normally happens to people who get bad jobs in a noble family. Also that they do everything they can to help her to get her a bright future. I am surprised that she can use magic despite not being a mage so maybe she can still somewhat be a mage with learning some magic to attack animals that come out when she gathers herbs. It is cool and I can't wait to see what happens next.

solid 3.5 enjoyable! The only big problem is it spends a little too much time throwing data out. Because MC has appraisal. It can get annoying and it pushes up the word count without much of a reward for the reader. Just wish for a better way to do and a little less appraisal dumps at the start. Enjoy the family enjoy the book I could have given it a 4 but the appraisal dumps were unfun.

Very cute story, featuring your typical MC that steamrolls through any obstacle in her way and easily gets over failure almost instantly. That's not a bad thing for this novel though, because the general pacing of this novel is done well and I never felt bored while reading the MC come up with ways to use alchemy. The translation is very well done as well, with little mistakes. The story is pretty generic, typical to your usual isekais that you would find anywhere but it's done well and enjoyable to... more>> read with no romance so far and just a focus on the MC creating things with alchemy. The only issue I have is that the MC is able to create at these things at age 5... Five years old is a pretty young age to be able to do all these things. I would've preferred it if the MC was at least 11 or something, but that's just a minor issue I have. Go read this book if you enjoy slice of life. <<less
