Blue sky, white clouds, lazily lying on the beach, while feeling the gentle breeze coming from the sea. Hounds at the side with marine animals chasing each other around. Cups of unrivaled wine from his personal winery with cuts of prime A grade steaks readily around. For others, life is all about pursuing money, power, and fame, but for Jiang Hai, this type of lifestyle is what he constantly dreamed of.

The story seems promising at first, but it goes downhill fast. As of chapter 27 the MC seems entirely ret*rded, every chapter has a huge section dedicated to author exposition which consists almost entirely of the author's opinion. There is a huge amount of repetition, and more over it isn't repetition of the author's opinion rather than of anything related to the story. As of chapter 27 or so the author has already spent half a chapter describing how beef is cheaper in the US for half a chapter at... more>> least 2-3 times. How is the MC ret*rded, you might ask?

He gains a huge amount of money through PLOT.
He spends it instantly without any research.
He expresses that he is worried about money.
He spends huge amounts without haggling at inflated prices.
He expresses that he is worried about money.
He spends more money.
He does no research about anything, everything is a surprise. A big part of the story is the author repeating again and again that everyone is racist against the Chinese. Right after one such complaint, the MC catches a nearly endangered shark and plans to try and make shark fin soup out of it.

The author complains that the Chinese take anything that's free and that has resulted in the over fishing of China's rivers. This is right after the MC catches his dinner from said river like he usually does.

Other issues
His powers are pretty inconsistent, Pricing is strange, every character introduced so far is incredibly shallow. Think random meat skewer stall owner from any other series, that's pretty much every character so far. All in all this is not a good read. <<less

Meow-ssu~!

Already read ahead of this so if you like reading an easy life of Harvest moon/Stardew Valley in cheat mode then this novel is for you

Away from the usual Xianxia Wuxia novels, this one is just a guy telling his tale on how he builds his farm and strengthens it.

So I've read up to 800 and something chapter in the raws. I say read but more like skim through due to the large info dumps.

To be noted, the MC gains a rather large harem. The story has strange ideals, large exaggeration and odd ways of summarising things.

The pricing of things will get annoying rather fast. Like the prices of his cows and seafood. And also calculating the profits without taking into account of things like labour, transportation, any other factors that might affect it. Most importantly, not taking into... more>> account of supply and demand.

Spoiler

Apparently you can sell best quality meat from a cow for around 750 USD per kilo. WOW......

And one more thing that annoys me is that the author uses heavy stereotypes to view the political systems and people of different countries.

When I mentioned about supply and demand as well as the beef pricing, it seems that the author doesn't have the concept of the world only having a certain % of people willing to buy that kinda thing and if the supply increases, the pricing won't stay the same. So when people are eyeing for the MC's secrets of getting a bit of the profits, naturally everyone's income will decrease. But no, the author has made it so that you can get like 50 billion USD in profit from raising 1 million cattle in 1 year...... C'mon even if there was that much stuff to sell, who the hell is going to be buying it to get that kinda profit.

One last thing that annoys me, there was this american school teacher that showed up at the start after chapter 50, and was having heavy hints of being the MC's harem, never progressed after 880 chapters.......c'mon now he has like almost 20 girls now, but one of the earliest women excepting his legal wife isn't included..... oh by the way, MC turns into someone who can't control his desires when someone takes off their clothes in front of him, and also somewhat of a rapist. Long way to go but its gradually turning south tbh.

I'm reading on to see where things go with his harem, the other aspects of the story are disappointing unlike the initial impressions.

Pretty bad.

11 chapters of him regurgitating half truths the author found on the internet and I'm bored of it. The only remotely interesting thing is you get to read about how a Chinese author sees the outside world.

Infodump after infodump after infodump, and since this is set in the modern real world most of that info is pretty much google sensei'd and terrible. Half the time it sounds like something from /r/iamverysmart.

Cultivation method and power is ambiguous and uninteresting. Bland interaction between characters.

Modern day, semi slice of life xianxia. MC inherits the legacy of a dragon, along with a huge amount of wealth, and moves to America to run a ranch. It's interesting so far, but like the other review says, the author is fond of stereotypes and half truths. He seems to have a persecution complex regarding his Chinese nationality, and this leaks into his narrative a bit. Oh, he's also very strongly opinionated; in the latest chapter, he talks about how all lives are equal, and there's no problem with... more>> eating endangered sharks or dogs, and that anyone who says otherwise is a "rich idiot with nothing better to do". If you can ignore those parts, it's a promising novel.

I also reaaaally wish that the translator would stop inserting memes/comments on every little thing. I'm not reading a fantasy novel to hear someone joke about U.S. Politics ("Trump xDDDD"). Every time I click a footnote hoping it's some additional information about what the author intended, it turns out to be another annoying comment. <<less

Surprisingly a good and well thought out novel, the author has done his home work on the subjects he mentions. I find that enjoyable and informative. The setting is good and I look forward to seeing how it develops it further.

Just want to ask that what is it with chinese authors? Don't take this offensively but in like every chinese novel thats story is centered in China there's stuff like all japanese, americans, russians and vietnamese people are a**holes and does all the possible things to CHINESE people and the "righteous" MC must get back at them... Oh and I stopped reading this story like every other where there's stuff like this 'cause can't take it so not sure how far it goes in this particular novel :)

Not what I expected from the synopsis for sure. This story so far is a story of a modern day Asian coming to America and learning how to run a ranch. He has a 'power' that has ties to ancient chinese myths but it doesn't come into play at this point. The MC is a bit stubborn in personality but is humble and interested in learning.

I'm really looking forward to this story going forward.

My Ranch isn't your typical "i build my big house with hundreds of models running around" novel.

It's about a guy who was forced to marriage but later got a dragon soul which currently is just a snake tattoo on his body. Everyday he gets like 2-3 scales that give him superhuman power. Just like he has way more stamina than normal people, he also can breathe under water. So he gets some money (A LOT Money) and buys his ranch where he gets his scales faster because of nature and... more>> so on.

He's just a guy who loves his boring life.

He also gets many unusual pets like a tiger shark, 1 German shepherd and a huge wild mastiff which he tames with his blood... <<less

Warning!! The novel has been dropped and has now been picked up by an mtl who isn't even fluent on english so I really advise you to not read it.

A wonderful slice of life-slash-modern times novel.

First 3-4 chapters are a bit boring and more of a prologue so do be patient to try and read past that part. While the early chapters of the story made you think that this would actually be an action packed novel, nope, it is a pure slice of life novel telling a story about... more>> a guy who managed to gain rich overnight and spend his days the farm in America, while having a somewhat unique cheat, that is not too much of a cheat.

It is easy to read, educative and pleasant. All of the Mc's actions are logical and understandable. One of the unique points of this novel is that it is very educative about our world, and I gained a lot of informations that are fairly interesting to me, which I learned from this novel.

I don't usually blast people off in reviews since people have their own opinion but, this one I have to. To 'some' others, however, this unique point of the novel is all nothing but info dumps and info dumps, sad, truly sad, because they are unable to get this novel's good point.

And okay, it's true that the Tl's footnotes that only contain his/ her own ramblings is a bit annoying, but it's in the footnotes after all and it's still no prob to me. After all TLs are human too, let them express themselves if they want, as long as it doesn't interfere with our reading experience.

9.1 it's hard to find a better slice of life read than this, truly one of the best ones I have read along with RTW. <<less

Pace is slowish though that might be the illusion of only 13 chapters and me wishing for more constantly, really its a nicely done modern cultivation story, and just a well written story in general. MC has a distinct personality and doesn't feel fake, his cultivation abilities are very cool and the whole thing has a great feel.

My Ranch (Manor) is a slice of life story about an average joe who has a miraculous chance to change his life.

Readers need to realise this is aimed at the Chinese audience and act like a travel guide to tell them about the world.

You will experience a mix of facts and fictions. You will delve into the darkness and debauchery of what it is like to be a very rich person.

People might find it difficult to accept the story. With the author goes out showing human greed and point out... more>> racist prejudice between difference races. Many readers will find it difficult to accept as the author will talk negatively and point out issues whether it’s Chinese nationalism or white supremacy. It is definitely going to ruffle some feathers.

It is quite impressive as he is willing to criticise even the Chinese government and it’s brainwashing of the youth to hate foreigners.

So for those who can accept info dump, accept racism/bigotry that exist in the world and with the ability to face some hard truths. Feel free to read this. However ending might feel a bit abrupt but the journey of the story can be interesting at times. It will also make you analyse relationships between people.

Please remember not everyone lives in the developed “West” and share the same ideology as us.

In fairness I would give this 3.5/5 for the different style and approach to a story. <<less

I really like the slice of life and the character of the MC. Story was going nicely until author just decided to end it (there were still a lot of things unanswered). Maybe even he didn't know how to continue the story and the MC power up. It was a fun and relaxing read overall, but there is 1 thing that annoy me a lot. That is using real life character names in the story. Without that, the story wouldn't have bother me that much. It feel really weird when... more>> MC become friends or sleep with people who's names that you know or respected from the real world. If you like slow pace story in modern society with a little bit of magical power (doesn't really matter other then MC only use it to become filthy rich), then you will quite enjoy it. <<less

Reviewed at c42, rated 4.

My Ranch tells the story of a man in the modern day China who fell on hard times, but then found his own fortuitous treasures. He became billionaire overnight, then decided to leave for better environment, so he bought a huge ranch in the US and attempted to revive it.

Despite its tags, My Ranch is more slice of life than xuanhuan -or at least, that's how it is till c42. We could probably dream of a magical beast ranch, kick-ass Mt. Tai scenes, etc in the... more>> future (don't quote me, I don't read raws, just imagination), but it won't be any time soon because the pace is very slow. Read this only if you don't mind calm plot with slow development and info dump. Also, there might be "cultural friction" as the story tells the story of a Chinese in the US. But so far there were nothing overtly offensive, I think, although stereotyping appeared here and there. <<less

In all honesty, this is kind of boring despite it's interesting premise.

In all the chapters available, other than the first couple, it's mostly just the main character going around buying things and experiencing the rich life. There's a little input from the mystical aspect but it's very small.

It seems like it could be building up to something really good, I mean it goes on for a while but this is really just part of the beginning act. Unfortunately as it looks like this isn't going to be picked up again,... more>> being 2 years without an update, the chapters that are available just aren't really worth the read.

If you're looking for a dead project to pick up it could be interesting but to the average reader just skip it. <<less

Technically speaking, this novel is just a modern day slice of life, with a tiny spin of a super power that doesn't impact much (for now). There is a lot of information dump, most of it too detailed for what the story needs, and quite a lot of creative license taken when describing the "real world" (I think americans might be flattered of how much it paints their country as nearly perfect for example). The flow of the story is also not really good as a result of those big... more>> paragraphs, and everything remains shallow (descriptions particularly so). Third person narration definitely doesn't help in that regard either.

Characters are also mostly boring, the only one that seems to have a slight bit of character being the "wife" he is contractually married to in the beginning of the story

That said, the writing is more than correct, and the translation mostly good enough to convey the meanings, so it's not like it's just a throw away writing.

Anyway, the technical aspects are not great, the story is passable so far, which is why I am giving it a 3.

That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy reading it, and I am also looking forward to future chapters, especially after all the "basics" are settled and the story starts to advance a bit.

It's definitely a hit or miss though, so if slice of life/farm novels in a world mostly similar to ours isn't something that takes you in, you can safely avoid it. <<less

The author spout so much crap out of his mouth than a cow does.

One moment he talks crap about something and the next he contradicts what he just said.

If anything, he might've been drunk when typing this crap. So much gibberish.

The ending was like wth is this ending? Makes no sense whatsoever when the beginning of the story and later on he throw stuff out making you think that there is an actual story with plots and stuff unlike other grinding Chinese novels milking away $ and time out of... more>> ya.

The start was intriguing. It makes you feel right at home where you got a jackpot that fill your house full of money and to have it gone like getting your paycheck every 2 weeks. Then the author just well off the roller coaster by spewing nonsense crap, stereotype remarks, racist comments that he has no idea about, prices of meat and veggies are like full of bs, and the list goes on.

How was he able to finish 1000+ chapters is being me. <<less

A mediocre novel, ranking 5/10, with a few good points. Take into account that the beginning is slow and weak, and the middle part is the best. Also, we have a very unusual CN component - racism subversion (relative).

Okay, so first the plot and setting. This is one of those slow life novels: nothing much happens (only occasional action), and the MC is spending most of his time eating (it's not very frequent, but there are some mukbang chapters where the author goes on and on about food) and accompanying... more>> his harem, and sometimes does business. There is some action like I said, but not much, and MC usually (usually, not always) deals with it easily due to being relatively OP.

Like I said, the beginning is slow and weak. It was at least 100 chaps, maybe even 200-250 before it got better (read: the author got the ball rolling with harem). The middle of the novel is okay, but once you get bored with the s*x, then it's probably time to drop this novel (exactly the reason I just dropped it near the end... I'm bored). Near the end it's just tepid, especially since there aren't really any truly threatening opponents for MC, and the fights which were interesting in the middle of the novel are no longer interesting, because the MC got too strong, so even if he very rarely steamrolls his opponents, there's simply no tension.

This novel, however, is very unusual, similar to Demons beside you by another Chinese author. The reason is that we don't really have much racism here! Well, not quite, but the author basically goes like this: we Chinese have good and bad points, and those other guys also have good and bad points. Therefore, he both praises and criticizes foreigners and even China itself (but he also carefully tiptoes around officials and politics of China, knowing that can get him canceled - in various ways). It goes to the point that HE ACTUALLY SAYS A FEW GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE JAPANESE LMAO which I think really deserves caps coz making a Chinese author praise the Japanese nowadays is like making a devout Catholic sing Alleluyah for the devil. Judging from the author notes, he's actually getting into arguments with some Chinese readers that go "reeee foreigners bad, USA bad, Japan bad, everyone bad, only China gud" and give him bad reviews without reading his novel lol. At least as far as I read (986 out of 1080 chapters), the author had yet to give in and was resolute about his stance. Very praiseworthy in the toxic environment of Chinese racist readership. Especially since the author had the guts to point out bad things about China (not many, but still).

Aside from that, I also appreciate the author's humor. He often breaks the 4th wall, mostly about censorship as he makes jokes about not going into the details of s*x scenes coz he'll get canceled (which, as we all know, is a very real threat in China, especially in the last decade when they doubled down on it).

One bad thing is how many animals the author is ready to eat (dogs being are the prime example). I mean, if you have ever seen that meme about what animals are eaten when (e.g. economic crisis, postapocalypse emergency rations, etc) then this is it. I think there's no animal the author thinks we shouldn't eat, and he has completely no regard for the possibility of an animal going extinct. I honestly sometimes suspect that Chinese turned into some kind of goddamn locusts after the famine under Mao.

Spoiler

Don't get me started on the author liking to eat deer deecks lmao

[collapse]

Last but not least, the author did quite some trope subversion, and I am thinking especially of face slapping. At least in the first half of the story, there were many moments where we got build up for face slapping, the MC is like, okay now I'll slap his/her face, and then MC is surprised because the other party doesn't do whatever s*upid thing that should set him/her up to get his/her face slapped, and there's no face slapping in the end.

The characters are meh. The protagonist is really tepid. He's really s*upid about some things (such as about divorce, but I think anyone can tell while reading that this was a setup to make the wife return in the story). On the other hand, although he's boring, he's also written in a human way (he has plenty of bad points, and the author very clearly shows that he intended to show what an average dude without aspirations would become with a cheat like the MC - and he did that well). Anyway, slow life stories probably never get interesting protagonists anyway.

For harem, well, the author didn't hold back. Let me just say a few things: that not all love interests join the harem (some don't at all, and in some cases it never developed beyond a one-night stand), that it's nice to read for a while but the author really has no moderation in various ways, that the author has some rare, unpleasant fetishes (no NTR, but MC gave someone a green hat himself a few times, so netori, and the author has a thing for promiscuity, which leads to him writing some ridiculous things a few times, as well as a few disgusting things), and that it gets pretty boring in the long run (personally I found the last 100-200 chapters I read a real chore), partly because it gets boring and yet it dominates lots of plot.

Other characters are not bad, though they mostly play minor roles. What I like is that we have nice characters that are black or Latino, for example (because, as we all know, Chinese novels are usually more racist against those ethnicities than the whites they already hate). I only don't like all those basketball characters. I never liked them in any other novels, and I don't like them here, either (basketball in a novel is generally a boring thing for me).

So overall, I guess you can read this if you're bored and if you like 1) slow life; 2) harem and polygamy; and 3) stories that don't have a complicated plot, maybe with a tinge of good humor. If you do read it, I recommend you stick with it for around 200-300 chapters, even if it means you will skim chapters (I did for sure). Otherwise, just don't bother. It's not a good story. It only has some good parts.

One last thing. The translation didn't get far, but you can read relatively decent MTL on novelhi. <<less
