Sage Dwight subjugated the Demon Lord along with the hero.

They, who had returned peace to the world, were suspected of becoming the next Demon Lord and were pushed into the valley of the dead to die.

Ten years later.

Dwight quietly survived at the bottom of the ravine, becoming a skeleton that lost all its flesh.

With deep remorse, he held the hero’s dead body and said to himself.

“What’s wrong is the world. I have to prove it to them.”

Having resolved himself, Dwight ate the Miasma of the valley of the dead.

He became an existence that surpassed the previous Demon Lord and headed for the surface, leading countless undead with him.

All for the sake of world peace.

The King of the Undead, who received the strongest power, began an all-out war against humanity.

Pretty meh.

The translation is good, though, the writing of this story is kinda simple and you will get good results with most machine translators.

The story is... meh... very meh. It feels like the author don't know what to do with the concept he got and just creates very generic drama to fill things up.

... more>> The pacing is glacial. Almost everything is padded with characters doing nothing (just standing, or sitting or walking) or with irrelevant details. One character talking to another would take several chapters or so.

On the other hand, the author can't seem to make relevant battles, mainly because the protagonist is overpowered. The protagonist can kill anyone with a blink of an eye so the battles feels pretty much like they are dragging on. It would have been something if these battles have impact or something, I mean, the protagonist does have a goal to unite humanity but we don't really see that making these events fell pointless.

The plot is pretty much non-existent after he got his revenge. We got nothing but the protagonist just reacting to what the humans does. In short, if the humans do nothing, he will do nothing. You can see by that how aimless the plot is. Everything else that happens, especially the drama are just contrived.

The characters are really meh as well. They are barely characterized. They are shallow and really dull only having a singular gimmick to set them apart. There is this succubus girl, because why not. A typical boring anime version of what a succubus is complete with the affection for the protagonist for no apparent reason. Grom just exist. Seriously, he has no purpose in this story. The protagonist is specially boring. He pretty much zero character, nothing but a walking cardboard tube.

Overall, everything about this story is just half-baked. The writing is half-baked, the plot is half-baked, the characters are half-baked, everything is half-baked. It really has nothing that you could feast on. Sure it has nothing really terrible or offensive but it doesn't have anything filling either. It has a very interesting concept but that all this story has. <<less

Wimpy emo lich who begins a war of aggression and then mentally suffer from guilt midbattle even though he said he had resolved after 10 years of despair T_T.

Honestly, I kind of felt like I understand what author want to us to feel about him, "he is genuinely good person, so deep down all this massacre heavily burden him" or something like that, but all of the execution to that is really bad.

Like him being depressed and spouting some cringy guilt-ridden monologue every time he killed some rando (that's every... more>> 3 chapter btw) isn't bad enough, he also try to pretentiously justified his action toward his enemy before he kill them? Even though he said nobody should know his true purpose? To what end? Make himself feel better? For character development? Being depressed out of nowhere for some random enemies is? If something great happen, like he have to kill his former friends who got in his way, so his "resolve" wavered, then it is acceptable as character development, but not this.

This is not action and mindset of someone who have "resolved", this guy in so much despair and determination in the earlier chapter, who decided to accept anything and do anything for his purpose without looking back, and then next time you realize, the earlier chapter's MC was gone and replaced by emo. You know how Nobita look after he get bullied by Gian and Suneo then crying back home searching for Doraemon to fix his problem but he's nowhere to be found so Nobita got sad and depressed? That's the vibe I got from MC, and it got me annoyed real fast.

The more I read, the less I understand MC's character. Though, based on which other characters were pretty much 1 dimensional, I guess the MC is already better than expected? *sigh* <<less

Saw the translated manga, the premise was well executed for a revenge cliché plot.

There were only a few translated chapters, so more materials are needed for a definite rating. Gonna leave this five star for now.

Great translation, but it can't make up for the fact that the story and its world lack depth.

Basically, the various elements that make up this story -- the magic system, the factions and characters Dwight encounters, the battles that occur -- are too... basic. The result is that the story has some interesting moments but ultimately fails to use its compelling premise to its full potential.

If this story had anything approaching the characterisation and world-building of a similar series like Overlord, its readability would skyrocket.

(I personally don't like Overlord... more>> as a whole, but that's because I despise evil characters and hate seeing them living well. I'd be able to stomach it if, like this series, the MC had a noble if cynical reason. But I digress) <<less

Excellent premise, the start was nice enough, everything after the initial setting is executed fairly blandly so far.

The pacing feels like someone telling a story they've heard thousands of times and absolutely hate. Dialogue is really... generic? I'd say that conversations that happen are straight cliches, but at least cliches have some flavor to them aside from salty or bland. The writing is executed in a way that evokes the feeling of a monotone professor droning on about the history of something he only knows through textbooks instead of experience... more>> or research. There is no real feeling aside from the start of the story so far, everything else feels really... meh?

Translation quality is nice enough, can't blame them for the way this turned out. They'd have to do some heavy editing to make something like this better. Hopefully the manga will do the story execution better? <<less

This isn't "Overlord" It's obvious the author is a fan of Overlord but outside of a few nods here or there it's completely irrelevant to the story.

This is "Maou no Hajimekata" without the perversion.

The focus, plot progression and character developments have NOTHING TO DO WITH OVERLORD.

... more>> I would even be reluctant to call this a "revenge" story, because this is a Kingdom Building story (the revenge is a passing note on the story and happens in the first arch).

Ok, let me break it down for ya'll.

The Story focuses on a tragedy that permeates the background of the plot, we start after his execution and his resolution to become the "common enemy" for humanity so that the world can finally find peace.

The plot points and plot progression are very well done with a few characterizations that break down the drama and the depressing tone from the start, but it's very clunky in it's humor, so it feels jarring and I can't help but wonder if the author shouldn't have just left the tone as is.

The worldbuilding is vague because all we are presented with is monologues from the MC, there is almost none, and things are glossed over in liew of characterizations that serve two purposes, either they break the tone to make a "tsukkomi" (funny man, straight man act) or to deepen the character and his goals.

I don't get why people think the pacing is slow, we're at chapter 50 and he's already built his kingdom, and won quite a few wars, even managed to fight 4 mid bosses... we've gone at least trough 4 story arches! how is that slow!?!?.

Yes there are some chapters that slow the pacing down to focus on the Kingdom building but we lack details, this part is intertwined with the Tsukkomi act so it's easy to miss the details, plenty of things are left unsaid but since we're looking all this from the MC POV it makes sense.

Let me try to break down the MC so that people can understand because I've noticed that people don't understand him... this is going to be a spoiler because it's all there in his characterizations but people come in expecting "OVERLORD" when IT'S NOT OVERLORD, so they don't realize they are making the wrong comparison.

Spoiler

MC loved the hero.

He and Hero are executed.

He doesn't die and turns into a lich (glossed over, no real reason or explanation given, just something that happens, and probably tied to the development of the future dread but I'm not gonna comment on that, if you've read "Maou No Hajimetaka" and read to the first encounter with the "hero" of this generation you'll know what I mean)

Here is the first thing, he may be a Lich, but he's not heartless or emotionless, he still haves a VERY KIND HEART. (this is the first main difference from Overlord and is the driving force behind the plot)

After 10 years of wailing in self pitty and despair, holding the remains of the hero that he loved, thinking about what haves happened, he decides to grant the Hero's wishes, to make a peaceful world.

Now, after conquering the capital and getting his first two followers is where most of the characterizations that deepen his person happen, He's portrayed as being in extreme depression, not caring about anything and spending most of his time locked up in his castle talking to the remains of the Hero that he preserved in a cristal, thinking if she would be happy or sad for what he's doing.

His followers are understandably concerned about him... again, part of this is broken down with the Tsukkomi act so you may miss the details, because breaking the tone to make it a bit less dense kind of works against what the author wanted to achieve... and the time skips ahead glossing over some of this occurrences but it would slow the pacing too much if it didn't happen so it's fine.

The thing is, I found this deepening of the MC important to make a clear distinction on why this is it's own thing!... and probably why people think it's slow, they don't want to read about a depressed guy rotting in self pitty, but it's part of the character growth! and I particularly enjoyed this parts because the AUTHOR ACTUALLY TRIED TO GIVE HIM A CHARACTER ARCH...

[collapse]

Anyway, yeah, the author has managed to construct his own story with distinct characters and personalities, it's not badly done although at times the humor falls flat, and the tone is all over the place, the character and plot progression is interesting, the battles are interesting and it also breaks a few clichés logically.

I like that there is a clear purpose and a clear enemy in the story.

So, please read it, but remember this is NOT Overlord, so don't come here expecting that. <<less

Just want to say that you should ignore comments about overlord. The only similarity is that both of them are skeletons and even from this percpective demon lord body is disposable in this novel. So it's definitely worse than overlord but it is as similar to it as SOA - basically zero real similarities.

Overall novel is kind of refreshing. My only complain is that MC is still too human like

This was like an imitation of Overlord but with a grudge build background character instead of starting with an OP character. The author motivation were good at first few chapter until the story began to reach to the main point of the grudge which is, the king. After that, as if it reach to the peak of it's grudge, the author seems lost to continue the story and began to become lazy with writing into short story not longer than my fart can hold. If you're thinking this as a... more>> substitute for Overlord, well, it's not quite the Overlord but a small fry lich as the title called it.. <<less

Love the setting, and the start was excellent. But the addition of the two subordinates feel jarring as hell. Their interactions feel so awkward and unbelievable that it makes it hard for me to visualize it happening as per the setting of the story. Like, the MC is suppose to be ruthless - and he did killed lots of people - yet the bone subordinate acts like a wannabe comedian. And somehow the succubus subordinate is (at the time of writing) an ara-ara onee-san trope at the same time.

Mc's interaction... more>> with both of them feel borderline rom-com. <<less

Have the Overlord vibe but a notch below. The sentence and pace through the story are not refined enough. And the main character, that was a sage, but only use fireball and bare hands to tear through stuff. Again, you don't suppose to introduce thing that is brazenly contradicted. Something as a habit of using magic, dies hard, even if he already died once. The image of a wise magician sage is now as good as a crumbling pile of bone in his bag.

Great translation quality thought.

Typical revenge but not really revenge wish fulfillment JP story. Think of something like tensei slime, but instead of the MC being a a good alignment, it's basically the MC being an "evil" alignment. Actually, it's probably more like Isekai Apocalypse Mynoghra, where the story frames the MC as a bad guy or whatever, but he actually "isn't really"

I could tell just from the first 10 or so chapters that the novel's not actually focused on revenge for how much it glosses over the frustrations of the feeling of betrayal... more>> from the MC. It's more like a "going through the motions" sort of deal, rather than the novel actually being serious about committing to the revenge plot. Of course, this idea of revenge and the MC being fueled by it is even more stifled from how he effortlessly kills the king that executed him in the first place. The king's basically a puppet, dying when asked. He doesn't try to run when the odds are against him, and the MC just uses his OP newly found powers that's not explained and kills him just like that. How much of the king did you really know before he backstabbed the MC? Did you really get the feeling the king betrayed the MC, or did it just feel like king said that he did, and then the MC died? There wasn't a period in time where you could actually get to feel the king on the MC's side, since the betrayal and revenge process is too fast. When the king dies, you don't feel any emotion since there was zero plot or characterization dedicated to the revenge process.

Again, most revenge stories, you don't really want to be the MC. He's usually betrayed in an awful manner, gets berated, ridiculed, and it's an overall unpleasant experienced. He's only gone through hardships, and yet, even the only helping hand that he got somehow bites his hand and betrays him as well. This one? Basically everything falls on his lap after he gets betrayed, and it's quite smooth sailing. It's less about revenge, and more about wish fulfillment and feeling good. <<less

This story has a great start. It's promising me a good revenge story--a contrast to another JP WN SOL Story. The power-up in the second chapter kinda too easy, but I don't really mind. I hope this story will continue with this kinda dark atmosphere, but we will see.

Oh, it's a skeleton! It means it's an Overlord rip-off!

He got wronged so he's looking for revenge!

Even if said he has resolve, he's just too soft!

All those claims above are completely wrong! It's not a complicated novel, so I'm confused how people missed the point

Spoiler

he gets his revenge immediately, but that'snot his goal! He aims at uniting the various human kingdoms against himself, making himself the demon lord! Even if he claims to have conviction, his actions are completely opposite to his former self, and even worse, opposite to the wishes of the former hero, the women he loved! Ffs ofc he's conflicted!

[collapse]
now, how the story is told is another matter! After all it's a WEB-novel, not a light novel which is done with an editor! <<less

In previous life, after killing the demon lord with the hero, they are killed because the world dont need hero anymore and their existence might be too big and hinder for some people.

Now, MC purpose is to become the Demon Lord so all the humans can unite to kill him as the world's enemy. But isnt he doing what he's doing in previous life? After all the countries unite and the peace is achieved by killing demon lord (him), they will go the same route again. After a period of... more>> peace, they'll wage war among the humans themselves.
