Well, it's one of my first xianxia novels i've read so I might be biased about it.

The novel has potential but it's a pity that the author doesn't update frequently. It seems to me that the author wants to finish the novel ASAP so the plots are rush lately.

But anyway, Ireally did enjoy the novel.
Spoiler

And the MC of this story is not a bloodthirsty killing-machine unlike most xianxia MCs.

Started out fairly good and interesting, however sometime along the way the plot started to speed way out of control. I personally doubt it's salvageable at this time! The setting is very interesting however, the big bad actually felt threatening at the start and the despair and threat to of mankind from the demon beast hordes felt very real at the start. The setting was/is a fairly well done dystonia in it's nature and that was what drew me in at the start and the cultivation methods of using and... more>> integrating with various kinds of demon beasts was quite fresh and unique.

But...

I usually despise the word "plot armor", but the MC here has it in leaps and bounds, he finds everything he needs easily by just being the MC. Everything from powerful artifacts, godly techniques, resources, knowledge, powerful followers and power-ups falls into his lap way too simple and easy. The language and jokes are a bit juvenile, the romance started out pretty interesting, but got pushed back into obscurity a couple of hundred chapters in. The women are above average for the genre, but they enter the plot for a short while, just to exit it for 100's of chapters at a time and then mostly fade away. The antagonists are all f*cked up, crazy, mu*derous bastards who care for nothing but gaining power, even is the whole world is destroyed in the process. And there are a lot of these people around. A LOT! The sects/schools/powerful family's are all hilariously bad. They all have huge infighting going on, which weakens the both the factions they belong to and humanity as a whole. But no, massive narcissism and power über alles is the motto of pretty much everyone in this series. In this novel, everyone knows your faction gets more powerful by having massive infighting, death counts through the roof, corruption and nepotism instead of proper education and striving towards a common goal in order to strengthen your whole faction instead of 3 out of 100000 people.

Spoiler

Hell, in the last few chapters I read, the MC suddenly felt he was to weak, where upon he conveniently found a way to use one of his many plot destroying items to help him cultivate 10+ levels in a 10-20 year span while the time spent in the real world was just a few minutes. Not that uncommon in xianxias really, but this kind of deus ex mechanics are always bad and is a sign of a writer who cant move the plot forward in a proper way. Keep in mind that the MC leveled up very slowly at in the first few hundred chapters and then suddenly started to increase his cultivation crazily fast.

All in all, not a bad read, but hugely overrated. <<less

I really liked the story when I first started reading it. However, the story gradually goes downhill (around ch250 when they join the sects). I didn't mind the MC having multiple love interests at first because the characters were sufficiently well fleshed out but it eventually gets out of hand. What did it for me though was the introduction of these jade slips that when placed in a hall (I can't remember the name) will allow to you "respawn" in a extra life kind of way (that's right everyone gets... more>> plot armor). The author seems tired of the series and although he has said he would finish it I wouldn't get my hopes up. <<less

NL's knowledge base covers everything. (Future events, nearly all cultivation techniques, all formations, a good deal about ancient treasures, alchemy, people he has never met, a bajillion other things from the time space book, everything). MC doesn't do anything s*upid or illogical, but knowing literally everything kinda puts a damper on the plot.

This novel seems to be on the cliched side as their is nothing new in this series, as like many titles of the same genre it follows the same background. Personally according to me it is fully focused on the MC other characters aren't important at all the harem aspect of the story is boring because he has eye for only one girl so that pretty much ruins the romance side of the story, but on the contrary the martial arts side of the story is excellent and the bizarre... more>> situation in the battle is quite interesting. His arrogance is the selling point of the story as it makes us the reader hate him and we will further read to the story to condemn him.

It gives us a huge lesson the novel of this genre are quite the same so you should give time to read other books of this genre <<less

The first 200 chapters or so are 5/5 excellent fun and great shenanigans.

The next 150 chapters are good, nothing amazing. After that the author lost interest in the series and it grows weaker and weaker.

I'd highly suggest reading this for the first 200 chapters or so, can't recommend it enough, and then dropping it once you lose interest in the current arc. It doesn't go uphill from there, it goes downhill.

The people rating this story one star say the protagonist, Nie Li, is another Gary Stu do-everything, never-fail, harem-building, power fantasy for the author. They are not wrong; however, there is a reason people include those facets in their writing in the first place. It's a cathartic experience to breeze through the narrative on what's essentially easy mode with a walkthrough. It makes you, the reader, feel good the same way One-Punch man's one punches make you feel good. The rush of triumph flows from those moments. What separates "Tales... more>> of Demons and Gods" from the sprawl of other power-fantasy stories is that there is an element of believable good story-telling, and character development.

In the first few arcs you'll can feel some attachment to the characters as the author introduces them and their growth are actually precipitated by legitimate narrative plot-devices. They are not the greatest plot-devices, but when the romance blossoms and new attachments form you'll go, "Okay. I can see that happening in real life if Nie Li did that." If there's one thing this author is good at, it's building those initial moments of romantic tension. However, If there's one thing this author isn't good at, it means you haven't looked enough to see the dozens of other things.

My biggest gripe with the story is that the connection between characters and abilities from the older arcs and newer arcs are threadbare. This story goes through all the motions of Xuanhuan: Monster cores, spirit stones, pills and medicines, martial arts, magical abilities, family/clan politics, and so on. However, none of the techniques and clans introduce in the beginning will have any real baring in the middle arcs at least. Everything in the Tiny World was great and although there were plenty of stock villains you know will never matter and are there to be stomped on, there was plenty of potential to build on everything. Well as of the 300s all the people from the Tiny World doesn't matter anymore. The alchemist guild or abyss prison or mascot bird elder or whatever? Even the previous ranking system? Just forget it all.

Oh and I can't remember anything about Nie Li's "friends" either. Since he's a time transmigrator, he doesn't actually have any touching moments with his peers. To compare, you have your poignant/funny moments with Naruto and ALL the other rookie 9 + Gai's team, whether it's actual saving one another or learning about plot relevant exposition, but here I know next to nothing about them from their appearance to their hopes and dreams to their actual fighting abilities to where the hell they actually are in relation to Nie Li's physical position. Zhi Yun and all the other girls are not completely one dimensional in comparison, but you know they are there to pad his harem.

The hints the author gives about Nie Li's first time around actually make the girls seem like they actually had much more personality and a greater role. <<less

I am loving this story. So what if the MC is egotistical? So what if he is a stalker. If you don't like it dont read it. This is the first ln since dxd that I am now reading again from the start. And btw most of the ln novel the MC stalks the love interest. Most ln's the villains are only there for the MC to show his growth.

Like I said in the beginning. Everyone has different tastes.

TDG has an interesting premise (OP MC goes back and time to become more OP) as well an enjoyable first arc. However it becomes slightly tedious as the MC starts going to random places and doing random shit. And so many useless background characters, Yu Yan is probably the worst but since the MC joined the sect everyone seperated what was the point.

The love intrests are both bland and are practically the same. Up till the recent arc everything seems like prequel and only now does it seem like the... more>> story is going somewhere. In summary TDG is really poular now I recomend trying to read past c300

P.S For a novel with a similar premise but with a more OP MC try Emperor's Domination <<less

I love the outline of the story.. About Nie Li who come back to the past self of him after being defeated by his most fierce enemy. He got this huge grudge because all his loves one perished. Its understandable that throughout the story he had cunning mind and a lot of tricks to win since his former self already at the peak of existence and had live for hundreds of years. But what I don't like is how his love constantly wavered. Since I'm not a guy so reading... more>> his pe*verted thoughts about other girls when he adamantly love Ziyun is not to my taste. If he act on it with other girls I guess I'm gonna drop this read. <<less

This novel's development is super good that's why its on number 1 rank in monthly ranking thus it proves that the majority of readers like this novel.

Well those people who give 2/5 rate in this novel are so so. I do not gave a f*ck about you people who likes spouting nonsense about this novel. Clearly his a 1 million years old reincarnated person so it is really reasonable that his is personality suits him and I love it. For the romance.. Well I I am not really into that... more>> kind of thing because I am not a person who is a romance addict. Well I just hate those bunch of people keep criticizing this novel that's and how they hate the progress well at least say something to appraise the authors hard work it's not like you bunch of people could make a novel like this.

You ungrateful people are so so so. I am really thankful that this novel was made anyway puck you haters. Haters Gonna Hate. <<less

Around Jan 2016, read raw up to c415 before stop, as the author started to slow down, both the writing pace and the plot. Six months passed, now it's c438, 23 chapters in progress. The MC is still in his developing toddler period, while his (past life) enemy is already The King of Everything. As almost all xianxia novels end around 2000 chapters, it's good to stop. Nothing miss.

This novel is the sequel of [Cult of the Sacred Runes Sh*t]. I already finished that one, and give it 0/5, as... more>> the first half of the novel is somewhat chaos, while the last half is total. Seem TDG repeats CSR.

Update 30 Aug 2016 : reduce to 1 star.
Two star is for the first 200 chapters; 0 for next 100, -1 for the remain.

My sympathy to the translator.. <<less

It started nice, Being reborn, having awesome mysterious knowledge and other stuff. His unhealthy fixation with the girl is kinda creepy but what can you do? It's love. After that typical wuxia novel with confusing power levels and weirdly named things either attacking or helping people. The MC is a Gary Stu. This story also has the power creep that is so annoying. "Ohh he became the strongest in his city, lets go into an another realm where he is the weakest. Ohh? He became the strongest even there? Well... more>> it's time to go in another realm where he is the weakest. But wait, there is more: He know all the secrets of how to get strong."

This was last ~200 chapters.

I give it a 3/5 because of the awesome panda. <<less

I liked the premise, and the beginning was good, and it seemed like a five star novel. Unlike others here, I liked how the MC acts like a jerk, especially the MC's interactions with the City Lord. However, after one of the biggest conflicts was solved after re-doing his life, the suspense and quality of the story started to fall. It goes from this guy is the most powerful person in this world, to he is nothing in the next world, and it continues like that every time a new... more>> world is mentioned. When the story started focusing on sects, that is when I started to loose interest. The MC has years of experience from his past life, and he mentions that he will be able to get stronger with his past knowledge, but joins a sect? He does not join the sect because they specifically have certain resources, he joins because he wants to get stronger, which his past life knowledge is irrelevant. <<less

As usual, the novel starts off great, I loved it at first, very interesting setup, but it becomes shitty like many other novel after a while.. lately author has been experiencing real life issues and the quality has gone down the toilet.... I really like it at the beginning, was recommending to everyone, but unfortunately I got disappointed by the quality drop, and large plot holes with irresponsible behaviors on MC's part, like taking kids to a different realm/world where he has not been before, and luckily everything works out... more>> for the best... some stuff are just too hard to process to believe in it...
i would still recommend this for others to read, but I was a huge fan and got disappointed later, so beware... <<less

A very good series. The MC is a bit on the OP side of things, but I really enjoy the notion of traveling back to the past to change the future aspect of this story (not a unique plot device I know, but it's done here). Obviously a favorite among readers given it's ranking on NU, but I'll say it anyway, if you haven't read it yet give it a go.

This series does world building fantastically. Nie Li's knowledge of the future makes any unanswered questions almost immediately answered, and... more>> when he comes across something he doesn't know something about it makes it that much more interesting. His foresight makes the story's plot a fantastic ride of highlight to highlight as he travels through his past cherry-picking the various treasures and opportunities he missed in his previous life.

If you don't like OP MCs then this probably isn't for you, but if you enjoy great worldbuilding and compelling characters then this makes for a fantastic read. MUCH better than the author's previous work Cult of the Sacred Runes (so far, at least). <<less

I got into this series after seeing the manhua and have to say I'm not disappointed. I read from beginning to chapter 280 or so because I couldn't put it down! Yes the MC is OP after going back in time to do things over again and having centuries of prior knowledge, but I really like my MCs to be OP and just crush everyone with their awesomeness and Nie Li fits that bill.

This novel isn’t bad, nor is it really good, the MC is supposed to be an expert who lived hundred and hundred of years and became one of the strongest. He then died and come back in his body when he was 13 years old with all his old memory.

The problem is that the MC is intelligent but really immature, you don’t seem to see someone who lived so much when you look at him, and more of a kid with tremendous power who try to do what he want,... more>> whenever he want.

While the plot is good and advance fast, there isn’t really any strong ennemies for the MC. Either they’re dumb or evil for no reason, and often aren’t at the level of the MC.

I’m now at the 308 chapters, and while the 150~ first chapters are good, it start to become bland and not as good as before.

If you have nothing to read and are searching a new xianxia, well it’s worth to try it, but don’t expect it to be one of the best xianxia there is. <<less

Definitely one of my favorite reads! This is one of the few novels I actually read instead of skimming it through. There are a lot of novels with chapters where you don’t really need to read certain parts to know what’s going on. I really hate when authors try to stretch a useless event or scene from a story line. Like for example stretching a 5 second action scene into 2 chapters worth. It bores the heck out of me. It’s interesting at first but that dies down. They feel... more>> more like fillers and waste of space. <<less

A must read if I say so, while the setting may not sound that exciting to some people it has been written quite well and it will not fail to entertain. Though if you are looking for something serious it may not be to your preference.
