To be honest, I definitely feel this novel is overrated.

Pros

There were definitely good points I saw in this novel that lift my rating up to 3 stars. One such example would be more realistic situations given compared to other fantasy novels which I find very applaudable. The characters are impotent, have no influence, nor are they special in any way. The arcs individually were written very well and have somewhat interesting premises.

... more>> Cons

Well yeah, being weak and struggling is great and all but there should be a limit to it. Light novels are written for enjoyment, not to torture the reader. And for those who have begun this novel, you may not see the issue yet but it's an issue that becomes more apparent the more you read.

Spoiler

Character Development

To be blunt, the character development is absolute ****. In short, the MC and his party get dragged through numerous situations that are considered life threatening which to others, seem like a child's fight. And don't get me wrong, that's fine but they only slightly change despite their life threatening experiences. Their character development trudges at a snail's pace only having barely noticeable changes every few volumes.

Now from what I've heard, after V14, the characters start to develop but I honestly don't have the heart to finish V14. I have to say it definitely requires a mentally strong mind to endure through all of it.

Amassing Strength

Even the negative points of character development pales to this issue. Struggling through situations when they are weak can be an interesting premise but these situations still have not stopped occurring. The protagonists are exceptionally weak compared to their peers who are at the same or farther starting point. But regardless of their strength, our protagonists go through more life threatening situations compared to any other party. And while this is seen in many other pieces of literature that use some form of "The Hero's Journey", what makes this stand out compared to them albeit negatively, is that there is no "Reward" stage. To be more specific, it does exist but the reward for their ordeals are so small that it can be considered negligible. For each scenario, it's like they manage to get out of a blazing fire only to realize that a fiercer fire awaits them. But their previous ordeal only made them a tad bit stronger, only up to the bare minimum to continue into the next fire. And after a certain point, they go through experiences that nobody else has experienced, so difficult considering how weak they are, but they still survive because the story needs to progress and it can't progress if they're dead. All hail plot armor!!! Though I do have to say the plot armor wasn't written poorly, it's appears too often.

[collapse]

I do have to say that the first few volumes were interesting enough for me when I started to read but afterward those volumes, the bad outshone the good. This might be misunderstood that there are more bad points compared to good points in the later volumes but that isn't true; it's just that the few bad points were just so dreadful that all the good points didn't even seem to matter anymore. Ultimately, I thought this novel had the potential to be a great one but the author didn't utilize it properly. <<less

Spoiler

But honestly when they arrived to Parano (another world again), it just becomes messy, after escaping Parano they reincarnated as goblins and then lost their memory, are they going to continue to suffer more?

The newest volumes 14, 14+. 14++ sincerly I was so bored of the new volumes that started to skip lines, I really dislike characters like Ranta, s*upid, annoying. Saldly one of these volumes its 50% about ranta so I skipped most of it.

[collapse]

The reason I forced myself to read the newest volumes is because I hoped they improved their skills or personality, but no, they continue their suffering, more worlds, more messy, not world building, Haruhiro with negative thoughts as always, Shinobu useless.

if the novel hasn't had Mary, I would certainly have dropped long ago. <<less

First off, this novel is not about normal people. Normal people do not need 6 people to kill one unarmed mud goblin. This is about weak willed, pathetic teenagers trying to survive. Now you might say normal people don't fight monsters, but as they have no memories they should be able to accept and adapt to the new environment. Unfortunately, they are not too bright.

How is it that the MC is such a p*ssy. I mean he is charged with gathering info in this new place but he runs... more>> away at the market place because all the vendors were trying to get his attention and he got scared.

I know not everybody's born a natural leader but this guy is just terrible. Introverts you go to parties and only pet the dog have more courage than this guy.

Spoiler

How is it so difficult to fight a goblin and a hob goblin. Yeah they are wearing armour, but it's not a magic shield you dumbass. Have you thought of just tackling the goblin and then just stabbing your dagger into a gap? I might sound unemotional here, but how do suddenly just become so sad over the death of a guy who you knew less than two weeks?

[collapse]

I would much rather follow the story of the other group, because at least they aren't some spineless, d*ckless, b*llless, gutless, p*ssy ass b*tches and they have at least some common sense. <<less

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash -This world Grimgar -as you called it; an unstable world of fantasy, deadly as it may be the people just trying to LIVE even with many of their brethren has become the ash for the world, but no one has wondered what are they doing here and for what reason their body had turned to ash-

Seriously, the one who can't understand the greatness of this novel is just a KID.
If you're looking for something along the lines of 'easy mode', or 'cheat-y feature', or... more>> TRIUMPH OVER THE GODS, then THIS ONE IS NOT FOR YOU.
If I had to say the weakness of this story, then I had to pick: character selection (mostly because of Yume and Ranta) and snail-like story progress.
Story-wise development? 10/10; Character dev? 7/10; Romance? It's so sour-sweet; it's pretty relatable so I LOVE it; Comedy? Nah, this one isn't directed that way.
The story is real, it's live, it is also the real world.
The story is fantasy-genred but it fantastically realistic: there's no such thing like level, status window, status screen, stat, true-resurrection skill and such or such, only you, your body, your skill, your ability and talent, your way of thinking, and your experience, and luck -in a sense.

You think you could get away with anything you want? Then you must be a solo player for life, for that was not the case for Haruhiro -he was 'entrusted' with the life of his comrades, he wanted them to live, he wanted to live together with his loved one- reluctant as he ought to be, untalented as he may be, he had to shoulder them.

You never know what the world of Grimgar will throw at you, and how does it feels for you when you're aware of your own powerlessness and mediocre-ness and then always comparing yourself with the genius, the capable, and the powerful one around you? It SHUCKS and Haruhiro knows it better than anyone, even so he still need to get stronger for his comrades. Cheat skill? Blessing from the gods? There's no such thing, only the curse of Ranta.

It can't be helped if the story progression speed is terribly slow, I mean there were no 'welcome our yuusha banner'-thing, no 'please save my world from the No-Life King'-from the Gods, furthermore the weird amnesic state the 'summoned' people were in at first -in other words there isn't any specific task or guide given to be completed, and yet they pay no mind to what were they once before they arrived in Grimgar, just accepted the 'advice' to become soldier 'obediently' and throw their life into the battlefield. And I'll say it again: cheat skill? Blessing from the gods? There's no such thing, only the curse of Ranta.

I won't ask for people who rate this novel lowly to understand, but I'll just remind you: what's normal for you doesn't mean that it was also the norm for the others. If your life is smooth sailing, then good for you -you won't have to suffer like Haruhiro and co (the group of mediocre one, the misfit, etc, etc). <<less

If you are thinking this Japan novel same like other you are wrong, this SLOW PACED (very very very slow paced) 'plot progress' might not suitable for someone impatience person, srsly, you really really real need extra patience.

This story is not "Fantasy with Drama" but "DRAMA (MORE DRAMA) with Fantasy" it's just drama with fantasy setting.

The story itself told about a bunch of amnesia group trying to live their life in this 'fantasy' world. The main character is pretty much useless (he's really useless) at first but as the story... more>> goes he became much better. While He and his (Losers) group trying to get their sh*t together, they keep struggling, losing their pace, than other group and so on (I guess) and his companion is bunch of selfish person, annoying attitude, but I guess the author was trying to make 'character depth' but it fail miserably.

The premise seems promising with the "FANTASEA" plot, but nah, this is pure Drama, a melow drama.

2/5. 2 For the Translation, 0 for the story. I feel like reading a dumb and dumber in fantasy story

About the translation, they are good, they are doing their job really good. <<less

This is based on one or two chapters into volume 3. Super slow paced story. D&D style setting with monsters and character classes. Weak-minded main character, annoying side characters. If you want action, do not read this. Slow translation speed. 1 chapter per week. Chapters are super short. If the Bad News Bears played Dungeons and Dragons, I would picture something like this...

Review after 1st volume:

The introduction was a mess, especially with a sudden myriad of characters being introduced with nothing but basic descriptions and speech patterns to identity them. But slowly the main cast is solidified and we follow the trials and tribulations of a handful of fledgling adventurers in a new world. It is a story of oddballs and people with low confidence grouping together trying to survive. The premise works fine, the characters and why they do what they do is understandable. Except for Ranta, who is annoying beyond... more>> belief, so much so that his personality feels so forced in by the author. <<less

I shed a few tears reading this novel series, but I can definitely say that there was a nosedive in quality.

I think it started going downhill from volume 7.

Spoiler

The part where they go to a different world really baffled me. The Dusk Realm I somewhat see it as a dungeon, but when it was a completely different world, I cannot see the reason why. I don't think it really adds to the overall story. Volume 7 made me think that the pacing was all over the place.

[collapse]

I tried ignoring these uneasy feelings and just power through it. It definitely become somewhat a slog reading this series somewhere along the way. And after I reached the final translated volume of the series (as of the time writing this, it's volume 17), I felt relief.

This was once a series that made me think, "Oh, are they going to kill everyone but Haruhiro?"

I think it might have been because I put too much expectation, or I predicted too much that I was left disappointed. I mean, can you blame me? I cried a few times. This series handles the emotional aspect quite well surprisingly, I think.

As I was reading volume 11, it changed my opinion about the series. And volume 12 was the one that made me completely give up on the series. For whatever reason, I can feel that the series cannot be repaired any more.

Spoiler

They should have just left Merry dead. I understand that it was already set up that she was going to be resurrected, but still... It would have been more impactful if she stayed dead.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Don't even get me started on Parano and the second amnesia. Parano was completely waste of time. It was cool, but the author already set up this entire world full of characters called Grimgar, but then the author just created a new world and made the party go to Parano with flimsy reason (I guess the flimy reason part you could argue that it's realistic?). Anyway, I just hate it. Even more with the second amnesia. It was a cool concept I guess, but I just don't understand the function. All the characters essentially just act the same way as before they lost their memories. Like, what's the point? Just to create more conflicts?

[collapse]

The action part was somewhat good. The fighting scenes are good, but the same case with the story, I think it also went bad? I didn't really notice it, I just felt it somewhere along the way. Take this with a grain of salt. But it wasn't to the point of hating it.

I noticed plot holes of course. But again: I stopped caring starting from volume 12. There were some loose ends that weren't tied up (It made me into a fool for caring about it).

There were times that made me go think that the main characters are being pulled along (basically passive main characters, specifically Haruhiro). A passive main character made any story into a boring story. That's why volume 1 to 2 or 3 was among the best of the best.

Overall things I like about the series: getting deep into Haruhiro's headspace; the party was essentially filled with side characters (they weren't like the strongest characters, this isn't power fantasy novel) ; fight scenes done well; Manato dying was cool; Merry to replace him was cool; Merry and Haruhiro are clearly the best characters considering how much care the author put into these two. <<less

Piggybacking off of a realtively popular review of this that I just read and couldn't help but think "is this a real person that wrote this review?":

Grimgal put's cliched characters in a realistic fantasy world and somehow manages to immerse you in it.

There's some pretty big reasons why this just works

1. The main character's a p**sy. Straying from the usual modern isekai protagonist that is typically endowed with abilities and charisma that they are undeserving of, the author chooses to create a protagnist that is perfectly flawed and perfectly human... more>> and then thrusts him into this well realized fantasy world that could really care less about him.

2. Side characters are useless and annoying. While most novels may have an annoying character, this novel manages to encompass every kind. From the lumbering-dumb-ass to a loud-mouth idiot to the quiet bit*h that the author spends precious time (mine) trying to explain why she's a b*tch. These are characters that you will find in just about any japanese work in this genre. What makes these characters so special though is that the author has put real people underneath these tropes. The interest comes from seeing what happens when you put these stereotypes under a microscope and see how they justify keeping this facade up as the world breaks them down.

3. They're weak. Seriously you're gonna make a fantasy novel with weak main characters? Of course I the reader am going to enjoy it! How the hell are we gonna explore this world with a band of losers, lead by a p**sy? How will these characters grow as people and develop beyond the stereotypes that we placed upon them? What fantastical challenges and obstacles will test them as both individuals and as a team? Where will their journey take them to and what will be their inevitable fate?

The only redeeming thing about this novel is it's quality, maybe perfectly structured sentences and a detailed world really can make up for everything, 5/5 <<less

Intro: So where do I start? What got me into the novel was the anime. There was just something special and captivating in the way the world was built and how the story progressed. Although I have to say I didn't get that into it at first, it was something I couldn't forget, so after I watched the anime again 3 years after it came out, I turned to the light novel to see what happened after the anime.

Review:
The story started strong, dropped hints of what might have been... more>> going on in the background and built the characters well - up until volume 9, maybe volume 8.

Spoiler

Volume 8 was a big turning point in the whole story as the team got split up in a slightly careless manner. I think that's where my pet peeve started with the story progression. It seemed forced. Anyway, it was the volume where Ranta made the decision to leave his companions and had a fight with Haruhiro, showing how a maybe-hopeful story made a dark turn real fast. But it might have been a way to build character again, so I let it go.

[collapse]

But the problem started when the author tried to create a deeper and complex background to the whole Grimgar thing while also turning the story darker. It felt like Haruhiro's character stopped progressing completely. Up until the start of volume 8 he seemed to keep growing and overcoming situations along with his companions, but after it he seemed to be doing the same thing, thinking same thoughts, making the same mistakes and even more foolish ones. He kept repeating how he cared about his comrades but it constantly felt like Merry and Kuzaku weren't included. He was worried only for Yume, Shihoru and maybe to a small extent Ranta. Everything else was fake.

Spoiler

It felt like the author had no desire to deepen anything resembling romantic relationships between characters. Haruhiro constantly kept Merry at a distance while his inner monologue seemed to say "i love her, I want to help her", and yet he didn't say anything out loud. The author created a chance with Kuzaku having a monologue about how he loved Merry and helping Haruhiro get together with her as she wasn't into Kuzaku anyway, because he figured if the two were left alone, nothing would progress. But nothing happened, the whole thing was forgotten.

[collapse]

And then came volume 9. Things seemed to take a brighter note again but the growth of characters didn't happen. Events happened, yet nothing was really achieved, and then came the (in my opinion) accursed volume 10. '
Spoiler

The author decided to kill off Merry. I honestly felt like I would quit reading right after they buried/burned her body. But they brought in a revival chance. Of course, there was a catch. Apparently there was an existence who could live through thousands of lives by changing bodies, among one of which seemed to be either the No Life King or someone who knew him. Long story short - Merry was alive but it wasn't really her anymore, it was something else. Haruhiro then made the biggest character growth since the end of volume 7 by hugging Merry, but it was honestly too late. Everything about the revival was foreboding of what was going to happen, the romance in the story was being buried under "she's someone else now"

[collapse]

Everything seemed to be rolling down the hill real fast, and the story took an even more surreal path in volume 14. Honestly, it seemed lazy. I felt like the author had no real aim on where to go with it. He had an inkling of an idea, a few elements he thought of incorporating into the story, but no real knowledge of how to do it. He seemed tired of Grimgar to me.

Spoiler

At the end of volume 14 after they left the world of Parano through the throne door there's a scene where a mastermind along with Hoyumu? Fed Haruhiro and the others some potion that made them forget and they seemed to wake up much the same way as in volume 1.

The Story progress rate is on the low side, protagonist seems to be like Tanaka kun, as he has no desires or further motivation to achieve something he just want to go with his own pace. Talking about girls in the story they are not likable first of all, Yume her constantly bickering is annoying, Mary icy cold attitude in the beginning was all right but her tragic story about her past was boring and bit too cliched and I don't even want to mention the other girl because there... more>> is not a possibility for her character to develop.

It has certainly some good points, like the writer has described the story in a realistic way as he didn't make the characters with powerful techniques and, all in all story can be further easily developed; Protagonist interaction with his master and Ranta are interesting to hear because he isn't shy and gets annoyed easily so it is new. The fighting scenes are good as they are easy to digest, side characters are nice and tragic deaths in this story of protagonist party members are the best points as it shows the perfect emotions and hopelessness that is needed.

All in all its a nice novel but bit too slow paced but I hope that it will improve as the writing style is good but it should have some romantic and more comedy scenes as he should not move this whole story to dread. <<less

People keep praising the "realism" of this series, but they're wrong. They're incorrectly conflating failure with realism. Failure is not automatically more realistic than success, especially when failure is constant and neverending.

So, the main characters are pathetic losers who fail constantly. That's not a bad premise for a gritty, character-driven, low-powered fantasy, but the author failed to write interesting characters or an interesting world for them to live in. Worse, the pacing is terribly slow so there's plenty of time for the bland characters to fail to get stronger or... more>> more interesting.

Now, that's all pretty bad, but in my mind what takes this series from merely boring to actual garbage was re-encountering the party of fellow transferees who were actually interesting. Worse still, they were stronger and more competent than the main characters despite having the exact same start. That's when it became impossible for me to read further. Why would I want to read about a boring loser party full of weaklings who are barely surviving when I could have been reading about a thriving crew full of total badasses?

The main characters aren't main character material. They aren't even supporting character material. They're nameless mobs and the author doesn't have the skill or talent to make a pack of mobs interesting.

Grimgar of Ash and Disillusion, a classic.

While I could just wrap up a review of this series as just something that abuses Berserk syndrome (a personal definition to when a series abuses its main char/cast so much it's not dark or grim, just boring, predictable, and numbing), which would be easy an untruthful, I think Grimgar does worse than that.

AT LEAST series that abuse Berserk syndrome actually bother to have things happen to the main cast that dont involve a duality of address issue -> plot armor through it ->... more>> try to act like plot armor won't appear again. From what I have heard in hearsay, this goes from a potential issue to the main one. If they are going to survive through plot armor the whole time, why bother trying to pretend like they won't? Why have them enter the wider world if they continue to remain useless and sidelined? Why try to build up character arcs and relationships if the only two options are change or die?

These are the questions I asked myself when I reread the first two volumes a long time ago when the anime came out, causing an influx of people who had only seen that version to think the LN continued on with the same vibrance and detail that extended 2 volumes over about 12-13 episodes. Well, they were wrong.

The hindsight has made it worse, as I stop and think to myself, "Would it be worth it to restart and rearead all of Grimgar? Would it?" and I find myself with a unilateral meh, which is also the tone the series takes. Super dark, super meandering, slow to the point where even a plot-less slice of life series gets to mock them for the indecisive progress through their world, those seem to be the goalposts of the series moving forward and they don't seem that interesting.

It is not completely awful but more of a sludgy mediocrity and underused/unusued elements that might have made a more interesting series had they been developed beyond rough ideas haphazardly glued together. <<less

It feels like you're reading the adventurers of a bunch of elementary-schoolers thrown into a video game/fantasy-esque world. All the characters are extremely flat and based off of common tropes. We have a cast of...

  • Haruhiro : the brainless/dense protagonist
  • Ranta : the Chuuni chatterbox
  • Shihoru : the quiet girl who clearly can't hold a conversation
  • Yume : the airhead
  • Manato : the only competent character who dies trying to save his party of dead weight
and a bunch more characters who I can't remember since they were all so flat. Combine this with the cast's... more>> utter lack of common sense, and you'll know why there's the word "ash" in the title -- it went straight into the fire for me. <<less

A change of pace from all the "Casual" Isekai I've been watching & reading; Grimgar being one on "Hardcore" difficulty, with a dysfunctional group of misfits. Pretty much all of them have some realistic yet unappealing traits, making parts of the story a bit of a slog to get through. Ranta being the worst offender, nevertheless as the story progresses, even I can't help but empathise with his frustrations.

The physical copies I bought are thick with pages of content, but lacking in print quality; with washed out black & white... more>> illustrations, making the darker ones more difficult to make out. At least all the volumes I've read have their own highlights, to make up for a lot of its flaws, with immense world building throughout. However it's an extremely slow burn and I'm still waiting for the overall payoff. <<less

Underated and underapreciated!!!

I really like this novel.

This novel is not the usual typical isekai story (earthling got isekai-ed and suddenly gained <over> powers), no, this novel/anime/manga is the MOST REALISTIC isekai. Start from the very bottom!

Slice of life, coming of age, fantasy, action, and romance. Love it very much!!

After watching the anime, all I could say was 'that was great!'. Because of that, I started reading the novel and oh boy did I read something amazing! Ignore those 1 star reviews by the other users or you'll miss out on something amazing.

Honestly, I can't even understand why the people here gave this beautiful novel a poor rating. First of all, this novel has a 'slice of life' tag in it. If you're searching for a story with a hot-blooded and overpowered MC with a harem following behind him,... more>> then this is not for you.

The protagonist and his party members are weak that they could get wiped out by goblins if they're not careful, but as the story progresses, they become stronger compare to when they were still starting out. Although they do get stronger as they learn and experience things during their adventures, they're still fairly weak compared to other famous parties.

Each volume is packed with tension and emotions that I end up getting frustrated at times, laugh and even shed some tears. There is a hint of romance in the first few volumes, not to mention a teasing scene in the first volume, and gradually, you'll start speculating who likes who and in the later volumes, the emotions and feeling of the characters are slowly revealed.

So If you're still unsure whether to read it or not, do try to read the other reviews. Because for me, I just found something that I could read that I can somewhat relate to and read enjoyably. <<less

This is actually one of my favorite fantasy novels to date. The story is slow paced but it shows a very detailed growth of the characters who are more human than almost any character you see in another story. Some of the characters they meet along the way are more talented and the ways they behave are different because of it.

The details of the world and setting are present enough to understand the world but leave room for further growth in that aspect as well. Those who live in Grimgar... more>> act in strange ways you wouldn't see in the real world but the reasons in which they act are generally clear.

The story writing is consistent and flows smoothly. The author has a clear direction and shows it with his writing. While some of the humor is strange and the characters seem to lean somewhat on tropes, most of the content is not delivered in an overbearing way. There is a wide variety of characters that appear often enough to be remembered, but not too annoying.

If you want a ridiculous main character who is confident and overpowered, this isn't the story for you. But if you want to see some humans struggle and grow in a somewhat dark fantasy setting then this is the right story for you. <<less
