Sick of seeing reviews at 3 chapters read...

Anyway, here's my review. First on this site, may do more based on reception. Will also update this as I read more, up until I either drop it or it's completed/dropped by translator (s). Summary at the bottom.

This novel really gives me mixed feelings. On one hand, it has an engaging plot, characters that actually behave like, well, living beings, and it has some decent world building (not too much not too little).

On the other hand, the actual writing is of poor quality,... more>> ruining the potential that Hakai no Miko carries.

It's like some fifteen year old came up with a great story, but as (s) he's fifteen, he lacks the writing experience necessary to properly convey this great tale he's come up with.

The foreshadowing is terrible, as it reveals not just future events but also the general direction that Hakai no Miko will take, ruining the potential build-up of the story. It's like the author got overly excited about his own story and wanted to show off how "epic" it is, only to then ruin it with these teases of this "epic" tale.

The dialogue is unnatural, and doesn't really flow well. A lot of the characters' dialogue feels rather forced, the same can be said for the paragraphs that describe the thoughts of said characters.

And most noticeably, the descriptions. While I can't say with any certainty it's entirely the author that's at fault here, it seems quite likely considering the overall poor writing of the novel that clearly is not a result of the translator (s). There's loads of short and simple adjectives used to describe things, with these descriptions often being unnecessarily lengthy and sometimes even redundant. Many of the descriptors aren't placed well either, disrupting the flow (and for myself, immersion) of the novel. A brief example of this poor writing would be:
Spoiler

... yelled at a suspiciously acting young warrior who seems to harbour feelings of guilt in his heart. (Chapter 12)

[collapse]

The description of guilt in his heart doesn't even make sense, as from the perspective of the first character, there's nothing written to show that he can see something that makes this character look guilty. Nothing like a downcast face, or blatant hesitation. That's just focusing on a small part of the sentence, the entire thing is poorly done.

Overall, my opinion towards this novel is the following:

Currently, I can't recommend it. If the author's writing skills pick up in the future chapters, or the LN gets translated and shows experienced writing, then I think I'll then be able to confidently recommend this as a great novel. Until then, it's just wasted potential. In saying that, if you can tolerate poor writing skills (I'm sure most of you can, given the amount of MTL and overall bad novels), give it a go. You may like it. Just don't expect something amazing. <<less

Its a 'good' story that is kind of fresh. Unlike most, there are no harems here and the 'romance' as of chapter 59 feels 'realistic' both ways. (Fictional race's culture reasons) The humans have also been portrayed quite 'realistically' (We are a racist, arrogant and religiously influenced species, don't even try to deny it) Main character DOES get an 'ability' but it is not something that would help him in any way unlike every other OP hero stories.

Now, let us talk about the so called low rating because 'spoilers'. I... more>> don't see any spoilers tbh. Calling him the history's worst destroyer is literally part of the title "God's Son of Destruction" Who else do you think it's referring to? Saying he is extremely 'cruel', is made in the point of view of humans, which were his enemies. Saying that he 'won' as spoilers is also s*upid. If he 'lost' then he wouldn't be a main character and there would be no story. Of course this story also has its faults. Like every other strategy stories there would be 'chess matches' where you play both sides and then you make one 'lose on purpose'. <<less

I have read over 400+ novels. And Is I could not bear with the low ratings, I have made a novel updates account. Don't judge this novel just by reading few chapters. This one is refreshing as it gives a totally different experience than your standard cringy Isekai novels. The world is vast with well defined characters and profound interactions. I love how how they foreshadow things as in a narrative and give us a little peek at future events without spoiling it. Ill try not to spoil. Though this... more>> is not a tragedy, the MC will go through hard times. And I love how he starts off cornered with little resources and walks a difficult path. I recommend this to readers of "Dungeon defense" and "Your and my asylum". Also there are furries, elves and dragons and various other races. Give it a shot guys, good reading! <<less

I will only give points for the author interesting idea, world structure and decent way of writing. But story is so boring. And this whole concept of MC saving the other race is so s*upid. This so called race he rescue is beyond ret*rded, savage and have a IQ of a kid. Having them being exterminated would have been better. They are so s*upid it's a miracle they survive that long. There is literally nothing likable or interesting about them. Is the way the author try to introduce the MC... more>> and other characters is so hard to like. Plus what's with all the spoilers in the beginning? But I do admit this novel at least is decent that all those isekai novels these days, but I really wish the author at least try to make everyone a little smarter. A war novel should be a proper war novel. Not a amateur one. If author can't write war novels, he should have chosen a different theme. It had potential but author is not up to the task for this kind of mature novel. The most s*upid thing I though was when MC was rescue from prison by a beastman that single-handedly infiltrate a human fortress without being notice or injured, while at the same time be so incompetent when leading his people. What amaze me the most is how easily this modern society Japanese kid that has learn to be a good person all his life could easily adapted to that world. The biggest error author did was to announce in the prologue what kind of person the MC was and just how legendary his quests were in the future. Don't start promising a mansion to someone when you haven't even lay the foundation of the house yet. Because author promise too much and would not be able to deliver it. He gave too much expectation to the readers. This kind of writing only works if the story is short and author already mapped out the complete plot in his head and have a ending. <<less

This novel has a slow star, the author is taking his time to build up the MC personality, and shift of enviorement that brings been summoned to a different harsh world to person his age. And I have to say that he has been doing a great job at it. This world is harsh, cruel, foreign and full of wonder to the MC, he guets dragged forcefully and the expierence almost kill him. He is facing a completely different reality and needs to find his way to adjusting to it.... more>> If you are looking at a sligthly new take on been summoned I recommend it to you. But as I said it is slow, the progress won't turn the kid into the man his future reputation leaves overnigth, it will take time for him to create his myth and as everything in history his accountings migth be exagerated or underplayed. <<less

This is my first ever review, but I had to make an account to defend this book. This book is an absolute masterpiece. There's no denying it. It has a melodic flow and a smooth pace that is calming and steady even in the most intense situations, which is absolutely because of how hard the translator worked to bring it over to English. The book itself is interestingly original. It takes the overused concept of "Traveling to another world" and made it it's own. Where instead of getting some kind of overpowered ability, he gets cursed and has to build up the power of his subordinates to literally survive, making his own empire and freeing s*aves in the process.
Spoiler

Eventually leading to the slaughter of thousands after an unknown event causes his mental breakdown and subsequent revenge.

[collapse]
I'll now go over the things that make this novel so good:

1: It does this thing every so often where the chapter splits off into a historical viewpoint, looking back at the time where the main character was still alive. I find this exciting because it leaves a lot of questions open for discussion that we won't know the answers to until the later chapters. It also concludes the technological advancements the MC made during the previous chapters, allowing the plot to move forward without dwelling on the specific reactions of every inhabitant on the planet. They occasionally go like: "Soma made this advancement using some kind of unknown techniques that were way ahead of their time period, which eventually causes a massive s*ave revolt in this city this many years into the future. This kills thousands of people in the process, making many historians question and theorize that this was the ultimate goal of Destroyer Soma in the first place."

Spoiler

In one chapter it said that Souma influenced the dwarves into making cannons. Since his knowledge was lacking on how to make black powder, he wasn't able to bring firearms into existence, but because he left behind the basic concept, the future dwarves were able to conquer a large amount of territory using superior technology they learned from him. What I find most interesting is that they called Souma their ancestor, meaning he isn't hated by the non-humans as much as it seems in the historical records. In the historical records (which are presumably written by the humans, Souma's enemies), Souma was painted (literally lol) as a monster hated by every creature on the continent. This also obviously includes his own people.

[collapse]

2: Souma deals with interspecies relationships really well. The dwarves had a long history of being hostile with elves, so to solve that, he has to act as a diplomat between both races, solidifying their loyalty to him in the process. This goes even further when he needs to learn the customs of the tribal Zoan so that he can use them as part of his army without them doubting his capabilities as leader. The customs of every race is very detailed, which totally adds to the overall Worldbuilding. The beliefs of the races also hinder the development of technology, which means the MC needs to destroy them to progress forward. This obviously paints him in an even darker light as history twists it to look like he was trying to destroy all culture not his own. (For example: People won't use manure as fertilizer because a guy in the legends did something that made him suffer eternally, with the Gods throwing him into a quagmire full of shit.)

3: The strategy is actually strategy. Souma has a lot of knowledge from LN's and Manga. But as mentioned by him, the books never go over the processes and steps needed to pull off those strategies. This means he needs to come up with his own plans, using what is basically "historical teachings" as the foundation. He also knows that to understand the enemy he needs to understand himself, which leads to quite a funny moment where he offhandedly mentioned that he knows how to defeat all of his solders and understands their every weakness. Insinuating to his advisers that he is actually their most dangerous opponent. Now, there aren't many glaring flaws to this novel. However, there were parts where I wasn't sure if it was a mistake that author left in, only to have that question solved a volume later with Souma questioning the exact same things we were.
Spoiler

In Volume 1, after Souma bought the Dwarf s*aves, he ends up speaking the dwarven language without realizing it. It was never talked about and glossed over, so I thought it was a plothole and just made up my own reasoning. However, in Volume 2, we realize that Souma understands all languages and naturally could understand all the races. Of course, we also learned that he won't be able to read and write which tarnishes his future image, but at least that was solved.

[collapse]
Now, that could be seen as a mistake but really it just adds onto the pro's of the book. You might think "This doesn't make sense", only to have it be explained later on. There are a lot of things to talk about in this book. Future Souma, the development of cities, the historical flashforward'sand what they mean, the plans of the God's and what Aura will do to destroy Souma's resistance to Her, why there seem to be no Gods in the future, and why Souma is called "History's worst Destroyer", etc. But we can't do that because the book isn't getting very much attention. This also means that it's not getting translated as often, ultimately lengthening the amount of time we'll have our theory's and questions unanswered. In conclusion, you should give Hakai no Miko a shot. It's different from many books, which I've noticed is a turnoff for a lot of people, but I'd like you to take my earnest plea into consideration. Give it a shot.

Do yourselves a favor, read the author's note in the start of the prologue and see if it's for you.

No magic, no skills, no jobs, no status and no harem...This is a story about him being called the history’s worst destroyer.

If it is, then I have one piece of advice. When you see the author's spoilers (in the form of stuff like "and in the future『blah blah blah』everyone remembered this『thing』and here's a『spoiler』to ruin the suspense"), just scroll past it. I'm absolutely serious! Although it seems to be the... more>> style of the novel itself and part of the author's intent, I found that it detracted more from the novel than it added. It was delivered in such a way that it ruined, rather than gave suspense. [opinions]JUST. SCROLL. PAST.[/opinion]. Read at your own discretion.

As for the story, it does carry the some of the feelings of a typical JP isekai, especially ones from a few years ago, but it is far enough from the tropes that it doesn't read like a straight-to-anime script, unlike many, many other JP-WNs which are all carbon copies of each other. No herbivorous invertebrate puppet MC with random bouts of being a s*xual predator, none of that garbage.

But seriously, just skip the spoilers, they are easy to spot. Don't even indulge in curiosity and have a skim. Just ignore them. <<less

Ok so, basically this is the history of a kid being transported to another world where fantasy bigotry won.

Humans are on a campaign to exterminate other races because racism. It's immediately established that this isn't a "both sides have a point" issue, so we have a good hearted protagonist having to cope with the fact that there is no peaceful solution for this problem, and being forced to grow throughout the conflict.

Good story, really like the main character so far, the mythology of the world is interesting, and the conflicts... more>> in it are a mix of complex and s*upid (just like real life!). Besides, it's aways nice watching a MC crush a system that preaches racial supremacy. <<less

This Book is a masterpiece. It doesn't fit into the type of books I like. I prefer an OP MC through and through, but this book is so well written it's crazy. I think the older reader would appreciate it more than the younger crowd personally due to some of the seriousness in the book, but I had shivers reading what the MC spoke.

Story setup without much spoilers:
Spoiler

The story takes place in a world where multiple non/demi-human races suffer due to a human-supremacist empire. Our hero is somehow transferred to said world and found unconscious by humans. However, as he has a divine mark making him some sort of evil god's favourite, he is thrown in jail with a captured "Zoan" (super-strong beastwoman). They end up befriending each-other and getting saved by other Zoans... After some time he becomes a sort of war-leader and teaches them high-end concepts such as: running on open terrain toward fortifications is bad, esp. when you have no distance weapons and you opponent does.

[collapse]

The MC concept is interesting: MC is your average Joe, with no extended knowledge about making black powder, supernatural intelligence or any other OP power. His main ability is being and history nerd, allowing him to use historic events as references to craft battle plans.

However, this is served by very poor writing.

  • The Zoans are s*upid brutes and it's a wonder they didn't go extinct before the start of the story.
  • Characters are empty, only being defined by one or two traits and no depth at all.
  • The story feels as if it was "imagined while it is written". At some points, the MC gets in situations that he can't overcome without using a deus ex machina that the story must then proceed to explain. For example, at some point, a battle occurs, and the MC suddenly uses troops of a race that he is never mentioned to have met before. Ensues a flashback to explain how, actually, they were there all along.
  • Sometimes, things are told from a "distant future" point of view. Think the journalists of "the Saga of Tanya the Evil" kind. The aim seem to have the reader stay interested in the story, wondering how the story went from what he (or she) knows to the legends described in "distant future PoV". However, the story feels way too much imagined while it is written for such a narrative construct to work. Instead, it just breaks immersion and spoils the events, lowering the tension instead of increasing it.
I still gave this 2 stars because the MC concept is interesting and I can somehow still overcome the bad writing to satisfy my curiosity. But frankly, I don't expect to last until the end of the story.

I do not recommend. <<less

+5 For this novel and the translation.

Another hidden gem on Isekai-genre, it didn't get much attention comparing to other isekai, but it was actually good to read.

-MC doesn't possess any Super Power/Hidden Power, MC doesn't have any Harem around him, Ratio between the Male and Female Characters/Side-Characters are same.

... more>> -MC using his Modern Knowledge to gain a victory on every war (He is not making any Modern food / Cheat Weapon like Gun or Dynamite or something like that) He just using strategy that led him and his allies to victory.

-The Story itself is about War, Kingdom / Empire Building, and Strategy. Taking a place in Medieval Period, this Novel told about a little guy whose helping Non-human (zoan) creature from Annihilation by human, because most of Non-human in this era are Brainless and only care about Individual Power. Later on, created a Kingdom where everyone can live together without any difference.

-Hakai no Miko have different Writing style from usual JP. Novel, because on some chapter you will see spoiler about what happen in the future, the Author trying to give a Historical/Heroic vibe writing-style for his novel.

Overall this is a Great novel, Still waiting for the next update, Really love it <3 <<less

This novel is an absolute hidden gem.

To be honest, I'm mad at myself for not having discovered it sooner, yet relieved that I only found it now due to having so many chapters to read. I made a Novelupdates account just so I could leave a review for this novel in the hopes of perhaps stirring people's interest in it.

Recently, I've been craving for and reading novels that fall under the kingdom building genre. This one is absolutely my favorite and has instantly shot itself to the top of my... more>> all time favorite novels list. The translation is pretty high-quality for the most part, which I must give great thanks to the translator for as the writing itself contains many complex descriptions. Though the author does ramble at times with inner thoughts and descriptions of processes or settings, I love the thorough and vivid descriptions they provide. It really helps give the reader a sense of what the world is like and immerse themselves in it.

Needless to say, the world building and lore is incredible. The author did an amazing job of crafting a fantasy world with a backdrop that actually makes sense. Much of the plot is realistic. There haven't been too many things that I took issue with so far or had trouble believing. The cast of characters is quite lovable too, there are even a few characters who surprised me with their character development and/or the way they redeemed themselves. For a novel about war and kingdom building, I also appreciate that the author manages to inject a fair amount of humor into it as well. Good humorous moments for that matter, that genuinely had me laughing out loud.

Other people have commented and left reviews on it as well, but the novel does employ a lot of historical anecdotes or "spoilers" throughout the story. For example, the author will describe some of the MC's achievements in the future and how it is perceived by future historians, then backtrack and tell the events leading up to those future historical moments in present-time. I personally don't hate these little glimpses into the future since they don't really spoil too much in my opinion. From the start, I already believed that the MC would most likely go on to accomplish grand things, so I find the anecdotes rather charming in that they set up anticipation and excitement for how the MC will get there. I do understand, however, that even these spoiler-like anecdotes might be off-putting to some readers.

Now, the MC... He's a regular high schooler tossed into another world with no cheat abilities or powers. A true underdog trying his hardest to live on in this new world he's in. I like how the author has been very realistic with portraying the MC's inner turmoils and thought processes so far. The strategies the MC employs are sound and draw references from real strategies that worked back home. There's no harem in this novel btw (the author mentions as much in their note in the prologue), so if that's a major factor for you in selecting a novel to read, please keep that in mind.

I'm sitting here looking at what I've written so far and holy mother of pearl, I wrote much more than I thought I did. My conclusion: please give this novel a try if possible. I was surprised at the quality which greatly surpasses many other novels, both in translation and writing. It manages to both set up a fantasy world with immersive lore properly as well as keep the plot realistic. Things, more often than not, do not come easily to the MC, and it makes you want to cheer him on and read further to see what will unfold. For anyone who loves kingdom building focused novels, I highly recommend this one.

And now, I'm off to finish the chapters I have yet to read. <<less

Look... I know these kind of dark and grim D&D style vibe similar to Goblin Slayer is not for everyone... but to do this novel dirty is... You can call it dumb or whatever, but every race stick to their D&D background, living style, pros and cons. It's realistic, it's not some kind of washed down personalites/background to simply the writing.

The writing style... yes... those exposition that reveals the future kind of spoiling things. But it fits the story-telling style, like it feels like you're reading a history book in... more>> the future.

Other than that, the writing is soooo great. Especially in a few scene, it got my blood boiling from the excitement. It's like I'm standing there, hearing their warcry, the sadness etched on their scars, their bloodlust for revenge. It's just wow.... <<less

How to make MC look cool and amazing? Make all his allies a bunch of brainless brutes who were incapable of thinking of the simplest kind of tactics for a war.

Then you have the unnecessary spoilers of future events with details that ruins the story, which just like what someone else said here, seems like the author is way too hyped about his own story and can't contain himself so he repeatedly leaks them with nothing gained from it.

And the last one, what can be said in two sentence is... more>> being said in two paragraphs. It's really exhausting.

My actual rating is 2.5/5, just because I'm interested in kingdom building. But I'm not sure how much more I will be able to read. <<less

it's off to a good start so far. It does bug me though. How every novel like this goes into the whole I came from a peaceful happy world. Then have the MC freak out when they have to use violence. When it's all bull crap. They make it a part of almost every single light novel. One, we do not live in a peaceful happy world at all. Heck from WW2 till now there have been 260 wars (or armed conflicts as we like to call them now) and... more>> half a dozen genocides. Those who believe the world is peaceful are just too s*upid to realize they've only duped themselves into thinking it's true. Like the fools they are. And two, having the MC freak out screaming throwing up then passing out after a battle. When he didn't even directly kill anyone. Is a little much. Seeing as how almost every person throughout all history that's had to kill people in war didn't even act like that. No matter how young they were. So, I wish authors would stop saying it over and over. As if they say it enough times it might come true. People need to stop ignoring the fact that we are as violent as s@@t. Can't fix a problem by pretending it's not there. That's probably not going to change anytime soon though. <<less

This novel lacks "psychological", "dark" and "weak-minded protagonist" tags. The strategies that the MC came up with are not anything special and he is weak minded as he struggles to make quick and wise decisions for himself and his loved ones due to his unusual attachment to "humanity" and its values. He is manipulated by the goddess using his threads of emotions and he would have lost everything if not for his unusual "luck" stats for most of the time.

This story is incredibly well written and built upon a well defined world.

As it is an reincarnation story, it is placed in the balancing act between pacing and exposition; but unlike many others which fails at this act. This story is very well paced meanwhile giving exposition in context and natural (mostly)

Its premise is really good and it's characters are well written (most of them) it has total control of it's consistency and never exalts the main character for actions unnecessary of such praise.

However there is one crippling... more>> flaw that is well hidden by the author: you will know how the story ends due to the occasional chapter segment that is in the perspective of the future. Which can kill the tension in the story at times, even though it is so well written. Which is disheartening because the story will become either boring or terribly bland knowing the MC will prevail.

If you wish to enjoy this story to the upmost, never read the parts that will quite literally tell you the future of the rebellion and take your time when reading this to enjoy the detail in it. <<less
