A War Without Casualties.

The Republic of San Magnolia has long been under attack from the neighbouring Giadian Empire’s army of unmanned drones known as the Legion. After years of painstaking research, the Republic finally developed autonomous drones of their own, turning the one-sided struggle into a war without casualties-or at least, that’s what the government claims.

In truth, there is no such thing as a bloodless war. Beyond the fortified walls protecting the eighty-five Republic territories lies the “nonexistent” Eighty-Sixth Sector. The young men and women of this forsaken land are branded the Eighty-Six and, stripped of their humanity, pilot the “unmanned” weapons into battle…

Shin is the leader of a squadron of eighty-sixers. Lena is a “handler” who commands the detachment from the remote rear with the help of special communication technology.

The farewell story of the severe and sad struggle of these two begins!

Found this series from the anime adaptation that I watched because of curiosity, and I was left baffled at the end. Made me cry at the final scene and I immediately started reading the rest. It straight up became my favourite anime, and is in the top third in my fav book series (cant really decide which of the 3 I like more).

It is mostly about racism and how war affects people. Child soldiers searching for meaning and value in life after their everything was taken from them. How just... more>> saying you arent racist like the others with a houlier-than-thou attitude doesnt make you good. And other topics with racism or war usually at the center.

And that coupled with a nice romantic subplot (i am a sucker for those) and an amazing and detailed worldbuilding, in my opinion at least, makes this series a must-watch/read. It is just too good, and an experience I will never forget even after it ends. <<less

Good read. I passed over this novel a year or so ago because I wasn't into the genre at that time, but after hearing that it got an anime adaptation with some big names working on it, I binged 6 volumes and I can say that it's very good.

At its core, 86 focuses on the character dynamics of 2 polar characters (our male and female lead), as well as the surrounding circumstances. It's what makes the novel great, and can make you think about some uncomfortable things, as well as... more>> intense self-reflection on societal problems in not just this world but in real life as well.

If you read the summary, you'll know that something is up with the Republic's 'unmanned drones'. And it's this problem that is heavily focused on with a giant magnifying glass that becomes the defining trait of future volumes.

The first volume was supposed to be a standalone story (it became an award-winning novel) but it sold so well that Asato continued. Definitely, there's a slight shift in perspective and focus after Volume 1 but it remains mostly the same.

Spoiler

Racial problems, death, war, the future and the morality of human beings are constantly put into question as Lena and Shin (female and male lead) interact and develop their relationship, as well as clash on their stark differences.

Shin is a cold 86 soldier, fighting for a country that cast him and his fellow 86 out. On the other hand, Lena is a purebred, white-haired noble inside the 1st District who directs the war effort against the Empire behind the safety of the walls, and is sympathetic to the 86, unlike her Alba compatriots.

She's naive, good-hearted and almost innocent while Shin is a 'Reaper', a teenager looking for a place to die. He and the 86 have foreseen death as the undeniable conclusion to their lives.

Mecha and romance are more of a side aspect to this story and is used more to push the plot forward (only the former does that) and enhance Shin and Lena's relationship. However, it widens the demographic and if you enjoy a bit of mecha combat/pure-hearted romance, it's definitely something to look forward to. The mecha and combat aspect is definitely more fleshed out, especially since Shin is an ace 86 mecha pilot and Lena is a Handler/war strategist.

[collapse]

In conclusion, if you enjoy mecha, themes of war and death, dark storytelling (there are sprinkles of fluff too), romance and deeper exploration of societal problems, this is the story for you. In my eyes, it's like a spiritual successor to other series like Code Geass or Ironblood Orphans.

If you want access to the 7 volumes currently translated, I'd recommend going to justlightnovels. Com to download the PDF/EPUB. It's where I got it, and it has all of the illustrations, as well as a dark/light version so it's easier on your eyes. <<less

Truly fantastic! The character development and portrayal of human emotion is nearly unparalleled. Actually made me cry with sentiment. If anything deserves to be considered master craft level this would be it. Absolutely beautiful but it weighs heavy on the heart in the way that makes you think, "Ah yes. Humanity is like that isn't it?"
