Has anyone ever read the manga Yona of the Dawn, well let me tell you, it’s special. At first glance, from the perspective of the anime, it seems like a typical shoujo story. No. It is so much more. It has phenomenal storytelling and worldbuilding, with a great grasp of politics and realism of life. This novel reminds me of that. At first glance it looks like a cute and fluffy otome isekai, but read a little further and it gets so much deeper. But because it is so painfully... more>> real (of course not all the time it is a LN after all) there is a lot of struggle. So please, be patient, especially after chapter 70. Just because many characters will (little spoiler be warned) betray the MC, do not drop this! This story is more than a shoujo, more than a romance, more than an otome. It is a journey to rebuild a kingdom that has lost its hope, hidden by propaganda of ignorant nobles and privileged commoners. Please continue reading this, I really do believe it will be worth the read to watch the growth of not only the characters but of their world. <<less

This is one of the very few novels that I am still keeping up with and I can't help but look forward to the new chapters.

I can't really say that the Ali-chan is brilliant because there are times when she also makes mistakes which makes her more relatable than the 'perfect' Liz-san. I like Ali-chan's character as she is stubborn but rational but strange. Duke is definitely the ideal type of guy unlike male leads in other novels or manhwa or manga where they have the tendency to get swayed.... more>> I don't know if Duke will ever look at Liz-san but as of the most recent chapter, it seems he has no interest in her.

I will keep loving this novel as long as Duke does not end up with Liz-san. Bwahahah!

Thanks to Carnation Scans for the frequent updates! <<less

I'm not too far in the story unlike y'all chapter 230 readers but it's okay, I guess. It's a bit annoying when she does that "I'll try my best to be a villainess" but she (kinda) fails at it. She's not really my type of a female protagonist. But hey, what do you expect when you're reading a villainess novel like this. I kind of feel like she's going to be super dense with feelings in the future, which also annoys me.

Its generally pretty nice, she actually has a... more>> decent personality besides being an airhead (you might like it but I don't).

One thing that bugs me a lot is how OP she is though. The author really made her have over the top learning abilities. She bulldozes through a book in ten minutes... That's not normal. It's fine if she had some kind of golden finger or buff of some kind, but they just go "oH she's a genius"???? Makes me kind of mad. What is she reading? A children's book?

It's not that bad if you read it after reading a tr*shy novel, but I just finished a REALLY good novel, so my expectations are kind of high. Welp, I'm dropping it. <<less

OP protagonist!! If you don't like this you won't like this novel. I do though. XD

Alicia is so fun. Somehow she's so unique and cute in her way of thinking. I really like her.

All the capture targets seem alright. The prince seems nice too.

... more>> Sadly this novel does lack women. So far only MC, her mother (who has like 3 lines so far) and the future heroine are the only ones in it.

Seeing as that's the only thing I'm disappointed about, it won't change my opinion of it much. Not a masterpiece of writing, but definitely very entertaining to read. I recommend this! <<less

Really good. A top tier Otome reincarnation. I mean, its really up there.

I recommend this not only to people who like otome reincarnation, but to everyone.

But there is one weird thing. And that is the image of a little girl bullying a 16 year old + teenager. It doesn't matter in the narrative of the story, but when you think about it, it is actually quite funny imagining who is essentially a child bullying a girl reaching adulthood. Heh.

I love Alicia's character. Her motivation to become a villainess might seem dumb, but her head and her heart is in the right place lol. She's whip-smart and can actually dish out a good tongue-lashing against the dumbass heroine. And I absolutely respect her savage nature. This girl doesn't need a hero to save the day!

Level of misunderstanding and OPness is high but strangely acceptable, plot is pretty solid (at least in comparison to most of genre standarts). Translation is good, too.

I give this five stars because it manages to have an otome game heroine be damn near an actual villain let alone a mere antagonist without compromising her morals at all. She's so dangerous quite simply because she thinks with otome game logic and gets otome game heroine adoration in a setting where this is badly at odds with reality.

It's so easy to make the heroine character opposed to the villainess MC because she's secretly an evil reincarnated person, but instead you can see how out of touch she is... more>> with reality by simply being exactly what she was written to be: An extremely charming and brilliant young woman with near flawless morals. The trouble is that this is a world of medieval feudal politics. So the MC deciding she must be a great villainess isn't just because she liked the character in the game but rather because deep down she just holds the game MC in massive contempt and is trying to limit the damage she causes by getting her to see reality, among other things. It's difficult for the MC to even understand what she truly wants because she feels like she's destined to lose and has chosen to embrace this. It makes for an excellent contrast, especially as it starts causing serious ripples and waves in the young noble community. The people around the game heroine, for example, do not actually live up to her ideals, yet because they're her friends she can't turn her back on them. <<less

[Spoiler Alert: I'm too lazy to use Spoiler tag]

I like the MC. Kinda disagree with how they made her OP though. I like OP characters but I just dislike that there's no buildup to her OPness. She's OP. Just that. Fortunately, her personality is entertaining to read... and probably the only good thing about this story???

Heroine on the other hand is annoying. She's too idealistic, WAY too idealistic. I kinda hated how easily male captures fall for her, even though, a moment ago, all of them were flattering MC. It... more>> was as if they were brainwashed into liking the heroine. No one is questioning her, including the country's leader, the King... except for one of the MC's brother. He had sus on Heroine and probably the sparkling hope I had left for the other male captures. I really don't care about other male captures but I, at least wanted MC's brothers to believe in MC which they did, just a moment before they met Heroine. That's why I was suspicious if Heroine had an ability to hypnotize people unconsciously.

Honestly, I wonder why they made MC that young. She's younger than Heroine! It made the shipping between Duke × MC feels weird, if they ever go that way. It's unsure if Duke is gonna be the ML of this novel, although it implied that it might be him, considering the illustration covers and all that.

Personally, Gilles might be better match than Duke. Again, I don't even know if there's romance in the story.

As for the King and the top ranking people of the country, they seem foolish enough to ask advice from MC who's 8-10 at the time. Although I'm unsure about Duke, I cannot wait for him to replace this foolish king ah. Furthermore, he doesn't fall for the heroine so I have a little bit hope that he could be a good king in the future. If he is also s*upid, I'll be really worried about the future of the country so MC should stop realizing her dream as villainess and just start planning to immigrate to another country ah. You can still be a villainess in another country. <<less

I had started this one and continued it because even though there were serious bits mixed in the story was just a fun read. I had looked forward to reading the updates up until chapter 61 the turn seems so out of place. I feel the the author is making out of character twist while screeching out randomly “plot twist” which makes no sense.

Her wanting to be the villain really doesn’t matter, she’s a 10 year old child to them - what right do these grown ass men have to... more>> put that amount of strain on her? Which governing body would ever decide to force a 10 year old become a handler for a teenage girl with an absurd amount of magical power? Even if Alicia can use magic it’s absolutely ridiculous to assume a beginner can control someone with such vast powers. Aside from a governing body, a noble child of said member of the governing body allowing their only daughter to be used in such a fashion is laughable.

They won’t allow her to test her swordsmanship, question her loyalty, and basically hide her away when the know that she’s a genius... this turn of events is a story breaking plot twist. <<less

This novel is pretty enjoyable! It's essentially your classic isekai "I wanna be a can-do woman!" villainess reincarnation setting, and although the villainess fascination stuff looks good on the cover it doesn't pan out well in the novel itself. That said, a reincarnator becoming a can-do woman is a good enough plot on its own, and translation quality is generally pretty good to support that.

That said, I generally dislike the MC's fascination with being a villainess, and the way it's implemented in the novel is pretty spotty at best. The... more>> MC's vision of a villainess is a perfect can-do woman who's hated by pretty much everyone. However, she pretty much fails at the "hated by everyone part" - when she says something that breaks the mood or bullies someone, she can't stand the atmosphere and runs away. She has a weird fascination with bullying the heroine despite the heroine not doing anything to her, and generally is a complete pain to many of her loved ones as a consequence. I'm guessing that the author also realized that this bullying was extremely unnatural, because the hurried patch by which they justified the villainess' behavior in the game was just plain BS.

Spoiler

The villainess was told to act as a foil for the heroine, i.e. The prospective saintess, by her father, the king, and several other big shots in the country. Doing so would ruin her marriage prospects and social life, and the target isn't even a confirmed saintess, just a prospective one. There's absolutely no rhyme or reason why the villainess would ever have to do such a thing, but I'm guessing this is the author's hurried duck tape to fix the leaking holes from the MC's villainess behavior.

[collapse]

Moreover, the romance in this novel is carried out in a very weird way because of all the age gaps. The MC is 5-6 years younger than all the other characters, making the scenarios essentially look like a high school senior courting/getting pushed around by a middle schooler. The male lead excessively touches her (including kissing her in her sleep on the lips) and gives her expensive gifts even when he's 10 years old and she's 5. The MC's father and brother are very protective of her (to the point of nerfing her swordsmanship and education so she doesn't stand out too much), but only in the romance department do they turn a blind eye to the red flags and let this train wreck of an ML court their underage daughter. <<less

I love it when she behaves like a total a**hole.

I was afraid because of the start and description that she will be pulled into the motions of [true hero, new protagonist] trope, and she is indeed struggling not to get stuck with the positive reputation, but then she pulls out her artificial hyper ego, and everybody is put into their place.

(4 stars because it is really good at what it is doing, but not on the quality of real best stories that can be sometimes found there)

Giving a 5 based off the setup of the character. I enjoy the smart and competent but also airheaded MC. It's fun and enjoyable to read. I can't say a lot for the plot yet, and honestly won't expect anything unique. But the villainess genre is pretty saturated and in my opinion, this one has a character that stands out.

I got hooked on the manga adaptation, despaired when I realized only 2 chapters were translated, and then celebrated when I found this novel. :) It's still early, but I am loving the refreshing take on the reincarnation/villainess trope (and that's saying something because I've read a lot of them haha).

I'm really liking the story so far. Well translated and easy to read is also a plus.

(One very minor annoyance for me. Either math is not the author's strong point or some numbers got mistranslated. 1 book every ten minutes times 10 hours a day equals 60 books a day. 60 x 365 = 21, 900. That is far more than the 4, 000 she is said to have read in that year. Once I noticed this my OCD kept nagging me.)

(update: The translator has double checked... more>> the raws and it's definitely 4, 000 in them. We'll just have to assume either author error or she spent 4/5ths of her time in the library doing other things besides reading.) <<less

Terribly written. The MC (as a young child) tells the king to his face that aristocracy is inherently corrupt and everyone should be equal. In the real world this would be hugely embarrassing for the father (a duke) as his daughter is being extremely rude and proving herself uneducated (by their standards) in front of a superior, and would result in either everyone laughing off her comments as meaningless nonsense from a child or a stern reprimand/punishment. Instead everyone is impressed at her Deep Thoughts.

Enjoying myself greatly reading this light novel, I decided that I was going to write a review about it, once I reached a 100 chapters before continuing.

This is what I’m going to do now ! Is what I would have written if I didn’t read the chapter that followed chapter 100.

I really don’t want to give you a bad idea about this novel though. That’s why I’ll first talk about the positive of this story and then rant a little about the single element that made me quit this novel.... more>> I only read positive reviews, that way I can get into a story with a good mind set, not spoiled by some random dude ranting about something that might not even be a problem for me (what I might be doing in 5 minutes XD).

So, what do I love about this story ?

The main character! She has an incredible personality, I love 95% of it. She is a hard working girl with a big dream and will do absolutely everything she can to achieve it. She is really smart but quite dense at the same time, and those qualities merges together to create impeccable, jaw-dropping humor ! It is also so entertaining to see her improve herself bit by bit, developing into an outstanding genius. Of course, I must mention that... she might have a totally wrong idea of what being a villainess entails... And, that, makes everything better ! From her personality to seeing her improve ! Each new chapter, I couldn’t wait for her next take on what a villainess should and should not do and see how s*upidly wrong she was going to be ! I firmly believe that she could be in a room by herself for a 100 chapters and she would still make that interesting, trust me !

Every event in this story is really compelling, the pace is really smooth, there is no real down time and the story always brings something new to keep you invested. The story has an array of different genre from romance to action to politic and geographic struggles, to of course comedy ! Most of those are handled really well ! The world is totally believable, even though it often gives you the feeling that everything revolves around the main character, I also love everything that touches about schools so I really like the setting too.

All in all, if you are attracted to the story after the first few chapters you should enjoy it all the way through as it really is a heck of a ride !

Unless of course if you aren’t charmed by any of the male leads and don’t care about them and are creeped out by the prince... (like me).

If there is a thing the story doesn’t give you, it’s a good harem and a good romance. The brothers and their friends are like bland steaks with gold sheets covering the outside... Up until chapter 83, the most you know about any of them is : how they look like and their name, nothing else. When reading, I changed them to sparkling dust in my head to not have to remember how they actually looked like because none of them had anything that made them special... not even in their way of speaking ! Where is your seasoning ? What’s all of this gold for ? Are you trying to trick me into thinking this is haute game meat ? What about the inside ?? And remember how I wrote that I liked 95% of the personality of the main character ? Yeah... when she is with them, every time one of them does anything, she just goes :”Wow he is so handsome !!” and that’s basically it... She doesn’t really have any interest in their personality and that makes it hard to root for any of them. Furthermore they never get any time to shine because they are always glued to each other... how do you expect to develop any of them ? Also why would they be 5 year older than her ?? That makes every of their interaction so weird !

But all of it could have been ok if it where not for the main lead... this guy... he is also a gold covered steak but what the gold tries to hide isn’t the lack of depth... not at all ! When you chew it you immediately realize that something is wrong, he has a nasty flavor and a horrendous aftertaste ! Yes he is totally rotten ! How is he not stinking you might ask ? I don’t know ! It just shows the lack of awareness from the author and that’s sad...

Basically try picturing a 18 year old guy wooing a 13 year old girl. They don’t really know each other and almost never talks. He spends his days looking at her, acts as if she is his property, kiss her when she is too sick to retaliate, sneak up on her and then teleports her against her will to kiss her necklace and caress her hair, sleeps with her without asking permission after she falls asleep because of previous injuries, carries her whenever he can (of course against her will)... and ! The MC despite trying to show that she doesn’t like it, always gives in because... he is soo handsome ! Of course !

I absolutely despise that and that’s why I won’t read anymore of this story even though I really really don’t want to stop...

(There are some things that I find weird in the story but they might get explained later hence why I didn’t mentioned them as a problem or a negative here, I don’t want to say anything wrong.) <<less

TL;DR. Skip it. It attempts to be intelligent, but it isn't. The romance is also bad. Translation is ok, but not great. It is at a level I can't be sure if the transaltion is lacking or the source material was just poor.

I would have liked to like it, but it isn't very good.

The story starts as a parody/comedy of a villainess with the MC being silly and extremly over powered because she really really wants to be an evil villainess that is abandoned by everyone (being abandoned is important... more>> for some reason) and shine by causing terror. If your response now is, what nonsense is this ? I'm with you. I have no idea. Even though I read over 150 chapters this concept is never touched upon even though it is ridiculous.

Her character is incomprehensible. This is fine in a parody, but after about 50 chapters the story attempts to become serious. There is a... plot. The plot is that the king of the country decides that he needs someone to teach the Saintess of prophecy to be more realistic and less idealistic. This is because the Saintess is too much of a good girl. She is kind, compassionate, highly intelligent and hard-working, repectful of everyone and humble.

How would you teach such person ? Maybe just send her a teacher who she will listen to respectfully because it is her character. In the story she actullay has what seems like a political science class that requires the students to think of how to solve state problems, and the Saintess writes some nonsense like 'Everyone should be nice to everyone else.' and instead of getting a failing mark or at least having a private session with the teacher she gets a perfect score. What is the point of the class? Hire better teachers.

Maybe let her work as a secretary to a judge or a lord of a city to learn about the difficulties of the real world ? Let her manage a bakery. Anything with a bit of responsability where failure is possible ?

Nope. You make an even younger girl, who is more than a little insane, to bully the Saintess. What better way to learn things than to be confronted and insulted in public ? I always learn things that way... This is the basis of this "serious and intelligent" story and it is dumb. Of course other things are dumb as well, but this is the heart of the story. Everything is about this, and it is beyond silly.

In fact, if there is a learning scheme that I think even a very intelligent Saintess wouldn't be able comprehend, this is it.

Some elements I liked. For example, the story focuses on the improtance of having grounded understanding of reality. Resources are limited, the world isn't perfect. So on. Being blind isn't a feature, but a problem. That is fine.

Characters aren't particularly good. The exchanges between Claire and Alicia aren't particulary intelligent.

Other straight out idiocy and or laziness in the story:

Spoiler
  • Her loving and very much alive and present mother is somehow not a character in the novel. In the 8 years covered by the story, she has been mentioned twice for two-three paragaphs. She has never appeared. What is going on ?
  • The reason for the 13->15 time skip is silly. Fine, the father miscalculated. But why would either insist on the isolation anyway ? Two years of seeing no other human is quite insane. However you look at it, this is just child abuse. There is no point to this. None. Just have her not go to scool. Why isn't that enough? Or invent something else. Have her contract random infectious magical disease, I don't care.
  • The fact Claire (?) is the Saintess is a state secret no one must know. The one known chracteristic of the Saintess is that she and only she can use all forms of magic. Also, well known in the academy, Claire can use all forms of magic...
  • There is an “impoverished village” which is just weird. Presumably this village exists in this form for over 50 years. People can’t leave or enter, there is no sunlight or clean water. How do they get food ? They can't grow anything without sun light. They can't use magic... There is no way they wouldn’t all be dead by now. Why does this place even exist? Are there several of these ? How large is the place ? How many people are iniside ? Are new people being continiously being brought in ? ow can our highly intelligent Alicia not care to learn about this ?
  • It bugs me that two of Alicia's loving brothers started hating her because they like Claire. They actively mistreat her in front of Claire. How is Claire not disturbed by this ? This is very much not "kind and accepting of everyone". Why is Claire's possy even so obssessed in the first place. Is there some magic going on ? Why is no one looking into it ?

I'm having quite a bit fun with this series. The MC is actually a capable person with high specs, yet have tons of big screws loose in her head. Maybe that's why lots of people adore her. They just find her idiocy irresistible, I guess... ?

The story mainly revolves around MC trying her best to be the villainess in her story by... saving people. Uuh... saving some royalty too. Yeah, she's just that dumb, yet absolutely strong in combat. Acting impulsive without minding hypocrisy, she actually have likeable personality.

Each chapter... more>> is short, so that's might be the reason why some people think there's no character development in this novel. Well, there are. To be exact, around chapter 250++, which is kinda far in the stories, more than some people are willing to read. <<less

For some reason, this is something I really enjoy reading. I understand the criticisms from the people who gave low ratings, I even relate to some of them, but I enjoyed it so much I even began to mtl.

Perhaps it’s because I enjoy the type of stories where the MC kicks the previous FL with the face of reality and how what she strives for isn’t the best approach to the goal she’s trying to achieve. Or that what she expects the outcome to be is straight up unrealistic. It’s... more>> enjoyable to see those who bowed down the previous FL get out of their trance and eventually side with the MC, listening to reason. That part reminded me of my favorite Wattpad novel “The Villainess Will Not Bring Dishonor to Her Family” by Bleezei so maybe I was kinda biased lol (btw that novel is a 9/10 for me, it’s actually really good. Both surprised and thankful I found that hidden gem in Wattpad. The fight scenes were so fun to read as well) <<less
