This is an intensely compelling mu*der mystery. I would say that it's somewhat similar Shinrei Tantei Yakumo or maybe Ghost Hunt, in that the main character is able to see ghosts. Ahhh I'm really on a cliffhanger!! Looking forward to how good this series can get.

UPDATE: Taffy Translations is the translation to read. Those translations are much more enjoyable and make a whole lot more sense. The mysteries are still fairly easy to solve, and the MC's habit of never learning from his mistakes is still there. Seeing the family develop through the series is nice, though.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: The translations for the first book are a little confusing. Although it's written like the MC's dad is in an in*estual same-s*x relationship with his twin brother, which initially surprised me by just how kinky this series... more>> was starting out as, this is not the case. Instead of translating the uncle as "uncle, " the translator wrote it as "second dad" or "dad, " which means something completely different in English. Be not confused! One is the dad and the other is the uncle; although they live together, it is NOT IN A ROMANTIC WAY. The nice one is the dad, and the abusive one is the uncle. There have only been heteros*xual relationships in this series thus far. The original translators left in a lot of "lo" and "la" and "hor" words at the end of sentences, which was incredibly annoying to read and nearly made me drop this series in the beginning, but this issue goes away when the translator changes at volume 2. It becomes much more readable. Many characters are named "Yu" or "Yue, " or otherwise start with a Y, especially in the first arc, which was a little confusing at first. It is much easier to follow once ~Taffy Translations~ picks up the series, so I recommend just waiting it out. The plot is okay as far as the MC tries to solve this haunted mu*der mysteries. Unfortunately, the mysteries are easy to solve, and the ending for each case is not a twist. I have consistently been able to figure out the solution within a few chapters of each volume, and it's painful to wait so long for the MC to solve the case when it's so obvious. It's also irritating that he doesn't share information with the police when finds useful tips. He also repeatedly does obviously dangerous things that get him hurt, especially in the first volume. The horror imagery is nice, and it's probably the best thing about this series. The suspense is okay but doesn't leave me craving the next chapter. Character development is minimal for everyone except the little brother. The same goes for their relationships and bonds. There's nothing particularly heart-rendering. This series is neither thrilling nor terrible. For me, I can only consider it to be mediocre. However, many other people have posted in the chapter comments mentioning that they enjoyed it, so I would still say it's worth checking out. <<less

This was an interesting book with a new concept. Talking about what makes this book work:

1. I liked the familial bonding and character development throught out the series, their relationships were 3d, realistic with it's ups and downs.

2. All the characters were portrayed beautifully and no the side characters weren't just for show, they actually were part of the story that made it work.

... more>> 3. The MC is ordinary not OP so pretty relatable, (except for the tiny self sacrificing streak that every MC inherits in the story).

4 The mystery was a bit obvious in the first two volumes, but still the horror more than made up for it and the mystery keeps improving and becoming more complex.

5. The translations were really well done. Thank you Taffy, for putting up these translations for us.

So, it's a recommended read for someone who wants a light mystery read with hints horror, not bordering on excessive. <<less

This is the first novel I finished, from beginning to end. This story will always have a special place in my heart.

After trying to read so many novels, no matter how good the plot was I never seemed to be able to finish it. Just as I was on my 'now' daily routine of looking at random novels to read and try to diminish my boredom. I stumbled on this one, I saw mystery and drama so I cl**ked.

I mean what more could I want? I read the description and... more>> it seemed intresting,

I then read the first chapter..

I thought it was okay, the main character had acted so childish, and was wondering if it would get better. The translation and writing was superb. I went a couple days going back to my usual routine of just clicking random novels, reading them and never to be seen again. But I stumbled on this novel again, so I tried it again and kept reading.

The main character I thought was annoying ended up becoming one of my favourite characters, along with many of the other characters. The story had such wonderful writing and translation that I became instantly immersed with the story of the Yu family, all the mysteries, and all the people around them.

I liked how it was episodic, but all the volumes were still connected, which makes it a really fun read with every volume getting better and better with the mysteries and the characters.

The prologues were so beautifully written, that everytime I finished a volume I'd be excited to read them and the new story they brought with them.

Truly glad I decided to read this again, and gave it another try.

Thank you Translator for the wonderful translation! Truly one of the best translations I've seen.

I've tried writing this review three times, but it deleted everytime for some reason lol! Apologies that it is all over the place and scrambled. <<less

Honestly speaking, I love this series and I don’t agree at all with the comment by @tetraider.

Yes, it might of been a little slow and boring at the beginning (I didn’t like the protagonist at the beginning either) but as soon as it picks up you’re basically hooked to the story and the characters.

And before you know it, your already trying to figure out who is your favourite character.

Specifically one of the things I find really good about this book is that even if you don’t like a character,... more>> the author showcases a different person each time, so a side character can easily become a main character for a volume.

And coming back on what @tetraider said. Yes the clues might be obvious but there is always tiny foreshadowing about what is going to happen next and there is always twists. I reread the book twice I saw many details I missed after I went back to read again and probably still missed some.

And isn’t it fun to go back and find foreshadowing you skipped over the first time around.

Unlike the multiple Chinese supernatural mystery novels that I’ve read, this one, if not the only one, where the solution to every mystery is solved by saying it was a supernatural. (And we can all agree that’s annoying)

The book talks about many things that happen in real life and explores different human behaviours while still mixing in supernatural. And in a good way at that.

I’m not forcing you to read the book and I know this book isn’t for everyone but give it a try cause it never hurt anyone. <<less

This series is seriously so good! It has great character development and plot progression. The relationships between the characters are so cute as well!! I love that the story does not focus on romance but rather the friendship between the characters and the bromance between Yu Yin and Xiao Yu is extremely adorable in my opinion (and it has shown so much growth throughout the story!). An amazing series that I highly recommend!!

➺ 4/5 🌟

I came here to read a spooky story and I actually got it. Though in my opinion, the spooky vibe in every arc is kind of tamed than I actually hope for, but that's on me because I typically have a higher tolerance in horror. For someone who doesn't usually get scared reading or watching ghosts stories, this might not exactly the level of scare I was looking for, I can still say that I am satisfied with what I got.

This focuses more on investigating cases. Since there... more>> are deaths in the crimes committed, that's where the 'ghosts' came in. Instead of a typical crime investigation stories that rely more heavily on the physical evidences, this novel makes the horror element the center of solving the cases. Different small cases in every arc and there's a huge plot of case that connects all of them. I personally enjoyed every one of them and I'm very satisfied with where the story ended.

I'm a sucker for stories with found family, and I was so happy to see it here. Adopting a teenager with a traumatic and brutal past into the warm home of the Yu family, I was already happy with that basic character setting. The slowly developing brotherly relationship between Yu Yin and Shaodi Yu makes my heart melt. Ah Yin slowly transitioning from being an insufferable guy who disliked the fact that his fathers adopted a teenager without informing him to being an absolute protective older brother who's willing to die for him just to take Xiao Yu's pain away. The Yu twins treating Xiao Yu like their own kid and never forcing him to bare his mind and heart out, letting the child move on his own pace, but still there to support and worry about him. There might not be a maternal warmth in the family, but the love and care inside the family is glaringly obvious. And tha's actually the best part of this novel in my honest opinion. The supporting characters are also very fun to follow and I enjoyed reading them.

In regards with the plot, I admit that Ah Yin is infuriating at times whenever he's being meddlesome and reckless, acting on his own instead of looking for his two fathers' help, who are both a police officer, and always ended up with a lot of injuries and even on the verge of death more than once. There is absolutely no arc/case where he left unscathed. I totally understand why Yu Xia has the need to discipline him with violence at times (note: not a domestic violence in any way, this is more of a very asian way of disciplining a child). He never learns and he just go straight into the danger, worrying both his parents and Xiao Yu. I couldn't even count how many times he almost died, the kind of situation where without s split second external help, he wouldn't be able to keep his life. His recklessness is not my favorite part of this novel, it makes me so frustrated. But the thing is, this personality of him is what drives the story forward, so I couldn't say anything more.

Since this novel isn't really a professionally accurate and scientific one, I didn't mind some things that didn't go according to common sense, like the police letting Ah Yin know about the ins and outs of the cases when he is basically an outsider (and a college student at that) regardless of his parents being part of the police force, letting him inside a crime scene, chasing after the criminal even knowing that he's being baited into danger when in fact his parents and the police are just beside him and he could have just inform them about it. I let all of those slide because I enjoyed my overall reading experience.

I'm actually glad to know about this novel. If it weren't for me digging hidden gems in Novelupdates, I wouldn't have known this one. I sincerely hope that more people will know about this. There are some trigger warnings so anyone who plans to pick this up should be aware of it. I will definitely pick the sequel of this once the translation is completed because I need more of the dynamics between all the characters. <<less

Real score 4.8/5

AAA that was SO good!!! Been a while since I read a detective novel and I am SO glad this novel turned out to be SO good!!! 😆😆😆

This is like Yakumo Tantei novel/manga, in which Yu Yin solved the cases with the help of the ghosts. But not all ghosts are nice ghosts. And, unlike Yakumo Tantei, where the ghosts looks handsome/beautiful, this novel's ghosts will take a form of their last appearance before dead. If the victim was drowned, they'll appear wet from head to toe. If... more>> the victim lost half of their face, well... that's how they'll appear too! So if you accidentally read this novel in the middle of the night (like me #s*upid) you'll get creep out sometimes lol 😅😅

The cases are not that difficult. It'll look like separate cases too, but it's not. It's a continution story. And, important point, Yu Yin is not the main character of this novel. Not really.

You guys know Fukigen na Mononokean? Ashiya is the main character, but the story focused on Abeno instead? That's how this novel is. Yu Yin might be the main character, but the story focused on Shaodi Yu instead. As the story goes, we'll get hint about Shaodi Yu's past; what happened to his family, who's the main culprit of his family's demise, and what is the trigger of it all. So, of course you need to read this novel from the very beginning, unlike Detective Conan's filler cases 🤣

Vol 1 and 2 cases seems very boring, but that's just how it is if you compared it to the latest volume.

Spoiler

especially (in my opinion, volume 6. Ugh, vol 6 is definitely my most fav case!!! There, you'll see how selfless and loyal Yu Yin is, even if he acted like Kurosaki Ichigo most of the time. I am not the type of person who likes MC, cuz support characters are usually cooler, but right there and then, I am falling in love with Yu Yin 😍

[collapse]

Spoiler

and vol 7! When karma finally caught Yu Yin and he nearly got killed by the ghosts from vol 6!! That was so heartbreaking!! He was like Tony Stark in second movie. But unlike Tony, Yu Yin calmly and silently accept the fact that he's going to die. And that hurt my heart even more!! 🤧🤧🤧

[collapse]

There was one thing that I didn't like from this novel tho.

Spoiler

Yu Yin have a friend named Yi Tai. Yi Tai got a sharp instinct, so sharp that he could even predict where the case is going to unfold. That right there... sounds like a plot armor. Because, in the last volume, Yi Tai's warning is the reason why Yu Yin can escape from his utter demise. But how? How did he get that kind of 'power'? Did you get into an accident like Yu Yin or something? Author should've explained that more clearly. Maybe he was a descendant of a clairvoyance or something. This is a world where ghosts exists, after all. Clairvoyance is pretty much a normal thing in this universe if they indeed exist 🙄

[collapse]

Anyway. 4.8/5. All of the characters are very unique and 3 dimensional; whether if it was Yu Yin, Xiao Yu, Yu Yin's fathers, the polices, the ghosts, even Yi Tai.

Spoiler

in the last volume, all the ghosts that Yu Yin had helped, help him back aaaaaa. That was kinda wholesome 😭😭😭

[collapse]

Now, it's time to read season 2~ <<less

- Translator did a good job. 100/10

- Well written plot. I wouldn't say the mystery is amazingly complex/hard to guess however the way it's written is thrilling enough to keep you at the edge of your seat (and wail at cliffhangers lol). The horror tag definitely helps add the thrill aspect to it but I personally think it isn't overly terrifying so it's readable to even those who dislike horror (this coming from someone who avoids horror movies)

- The strength of this novel is definitely on the relationships though!... more>> The bromance and friendship of this novel is simply exquisite and I love how the siblings bond between Yu and Yu Yin progressed throughout the story. The other side characters are really likeable as well and have their own traits.

- Our MC Yu Yin is an idiot but a highly likeable idiot. He's not a complete idiot since he is able to connect the dots to solve the mystery to some extent. However, you know how those horror movie main characters know that a room is suspicious and still opens the door anyways? Yup that's our MC right there.

His other big flaw is how he throws all caution into the wind when someone he cares about is in danger, and rashly runs head first into danger despite having 0 self defense skills without calling for support/back-up first (gahhhh MC whyyy).

Spoiler

However the consequences is mostly only our poor MC getting beaten up (I'm in awe at how durable his body is) and the other characters worrying over him afterwards is kinda sweet so I got over it lol

[collapse]
.

Despite all this, our MC is actually truly likeable and I ended up genuinely liking and rooting for him over the course of the story (in spite of him not fitting my typical protagonist preference). His outstanding loyalty and genuine care towards his friends/Yu/his two dads is really touching and written nicely. <<less

First, don't read it with your 'Modern Brain'. Because this novel is sure are an old type of Novel. In someway it was realistic, in other way, it sure are an old type of Fiction story.

By realistic, I get why MC most of time just saying "it's fine. It's nothing. I'm fine.". First, he's a Young Adult. So I think as long as he think his problem wasn't 'Deadly', he think he can just handle it himself. Second, he's a MALE Young Adult. Male personality usually involved Pride, etc, the... more>> type that doesn't tell problem they have to people. Third, most of time I think he doesn't want to Trouble his Family. That's the realistic part and I accept that!

The unrealistic aka Old Fiction Story type is, some part that a bit dragging. I said 'a bit'. Our MC wasn't a Calm Modern Type of Protagonist, but he sure is not Realistic in a way he wasn't 'Paranoid enough'. I'm not asking him to Paranoid, but by 'Paranoid' I mean, his lack of Survival Instinct or many type of Instinct in general. He had gone through things, so why doesn't he being Careful enough. If he's Suspicious of things that has solid reason; the type that related to the Case, why didn't he immediately tell his Family or the Family Friend that work with the Police/Case?

Our MC is not Smart or Genius type. He's normal, just slightly Smart and definitely can be a Police in the future if he want. But he's not the Genius type that has so many Plans on his sleeves. So why he keep things 'hidden' and had to see where it going to be to finally tell the things to others???

Also the "it must be just my imagination" or "is it prank?" kind of thought, Bro, you're constantly surrounded by Supernatural Ghost Stuff, so why ignore things like as if you're in Denial ??? He had to gone through twice or trice Supernatural Stuff to confirm it was Real things when the clues was already pointed out that it was real Ghost stuff ?!!

[THE ABOVE 'COMPLAINS' MOSTLY TOWARD THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON 1. AND THOSE 'COMPLAINS' ONLY EXIST BECAUSE I READ IT WITH MY PRESENT BRAIN, IF IT WAS A DECADE AGO BRAIN, I PROBABLY HAVE ALMOST ZERO COMPLAIN]

One thing I like is his Yin Yang eyes is not a Secret in his Family and to his Friends and even some other Police officers. And surprisingly, some Ghost are Reasonable and Sensible. Even Helpful sometimes!... within reason.

But the MOST UNREALISTIC part is; they know Ghost exist. They know Ghost CAN harm people. But from 4 Main Characters, only ONE has Protection Charm??!!
Spoiler

Though in Vol.7 it briefly mentioned that their Father finally get another one. But seriously, they only have 2 Amulets???!!! The Twins doesn't feel the need to at least get more amulet for their own selves???!!! I get Yu Xia, but Yu Tong??!! Really???!!

[collapse]

Anyway... Our MC is the MOST Unluckiest Protagonist I have ever know. He get injured at Every Arcs....... but I liked it. HAHAHAAHAHAHA #IMSOSORRY
It's not because I dislike him. Far from it! I LOVE HIM!!! I adore him and sometimes I do want to hit his head like his Uncle like to do. But seeing him getting injured and people worry about him is nice. #imreallysorry (*>.<*)

And the Ending... Is Perfect!

I don't know if I'm going to read the Season 2 sooner or later. But I will read it unless I get an Unpleasant Spoiler. I don't have problem with Spoiler as long as it wasn't Unpleasant. I pray the story stays Non-Romance or going to the direction I'm comfortable with.

Anyway, I Truly LOVE the Season 1 so Much !!! I adore our MC Yu Yin sooo much!!! I like his Family!!! And great Supporting Characters. I wish for the best for the Season 2. 🙏 #pray <<less

it's been a while since I finished it but I still wanted to make a review :D. Plot-wise it was more of a 4/5, but I was emotionally invested completely as drawn in. My happiness was a solid 5/5.

as mentioned in the summary, shaodi yu is adopted into the yu family. His past is a complete mystery. Each case was a small connection to the final reveal. I love shaodi yu's character. I will write a whole essay on why this person deserves everything-- 1/1000.

i think one of the best... more>> parts about the novel would be the human connections (and ghost ones ;)). It was nice watching the two main character's relationships grow.

Spoiler

HONESTLY BY THE END WATCHING HOW MUCH SHAODI YU CHANGED BECAUSE OF HIS NEW FAMILY WAS SO HEARTWARMING. I HOPE THEY ARE ALL HAPPY AND YU YIN STOPS ALMOST DYING! Ty for my friend who rec-ed this to me LMAO, i love death seeking mcs.

they should make movies of this,.. They reallly should.

altho I wont dare to watch it, my poor weak heart, everytime the novel described the "It", I shivered but still read it with cautious. I blame the TL, the translation is just too good. *Hats off to Taffy TL and Author*

I dont usually read horror, I really really dont. I hate myself for being curious bcoz of the NU stars and recommendation.

Just start yesterday and now I'm lack of sleep. I want to stop reading but can't. It have too many... more>> and cleverly cliff hangers anyway. So I take my break in the moment to write this review.

anyway I will continue to read it now, after I save the Authors other work and TL website link. <<less

Looks like I had too much expectations for this book. It really annoys me when MC noticed more than three coincidences and still brushed it off as mere coincidences. I can't. Also MC has no self-preservation whatsoever, I guess being selfless means one must completely disregard one's own personal safety. It feels like MC's selfless acts is just him making s*upid decisions.

Story wise, the suspense is average at best. The only thing I enjoyed so far is the bond shared between Yu Yin and Shaodi Yu.
