I'm tired of reading angst webnovels so this novel is healing me as whatever the MC planned or do it'll be really funny lmao

Spoiler

tbh there is angst actually. But afaik its only on the first timeline

[collapse]

It is a slow paced novel, but it gets interesting everytime the story progress. The development of the MC (he's tr*sh from the beginning until now but at least he treasures his colleague now) is real fun. I don't like harem but the harem in this webnovel quite acceptable for me. At last, I have a high expectation for this webnovel.

Characters: Compared to TCF's characters that were fleshed out and capable of character growth, characters here were one dimensional and not capable of changing wether for better or worse. Everyone here was made s*upid so that the MC could be called a genius when he's captain obvious at best.

Plot: Compared to TCF where not all fights were easily won and not all plans were perfect, Every 'battle' here was won easily thanks to MC's 'schemes' (more like plot armor to me). Even if almost all stories have plot armor,... more>> the author must make things exciting for the reader. Here, I have not seen a fight where I was at the edge of my seat or a scheme so good that I wasn't able to predict it.

World building: decent

Translation: good enough for something I didn't pay for to read.

To even compare this to TCF, I'd like to smack the shizz out of that dwaram guy. If you have a bias for crappy writing, then so be it, but to call this better without any reason, you're misleading others into thinking that this novel is worth reading.

For this to win an award, the judges might have been forced to choose between this and a crappier work. <<less

One if the top novel in this site. The MC is a real despicable guy that will do anything for his own sake, however he do has a good sense of honour and responsibility to people under him and people close to him thus the readers feel gratified that the MC use his power for good. His harem is topnotch with all the women powerful in their own way and help MC in his quest for safety. However as I said before our MC has a sense of responsibility towards... more>> his people thus he is not just a scum that use women. The way he try to juggle these dangerous women are a hoot in their own right too. His 'love' towards the original protagonist is also a relationship that developed towards something meaningful and we feel gratified that our MC able to help the protagonist towards his desired future.

This is highly highly recommended towards everyone. The MTL is fairly readable if you have a good fortitude. <<less

Much better than TCF, The MC is very manipulative and very clever. Not too strong but also not too weak. His power is on his brain and his eloquence. The female MC is a yandere and can be quite annoying on the early story, but overtime she will get better and the Protagonist will get a lot of female companion on the way who can replace the annoying yandere protagonist. That's all. Overall very good novel, no wonder it won the competition. Just bear with the story, there's no reason... more>> for you guys to drop the story just because the annoying yandere female protagonist. <<less

I was baited into reading a story about a "master manipulator." Y'know, I really trusted all these 5 star reviews and people who've read pretty much all of the novel already. I had a vague idea of what I was getting myself into. "MC is scum, will never be redeemed, but has some good moments with his friends." "Whenever he schemes something up, it feels good when something goes wrong." Was this one of those situations where the dangerous looking tags weren't exactly true? So I had to read it... more>> first to decide if RIM was the MUST READ it was. And boy, did I cringe. I have never cringed so hard in my entire life. It could be considered the same level of goth kid cringe. I honest to God cannot rate this 3 stars at the minimum.

Looking at reviews again with a new lense, I see that none of these 5 star reviews ever really talk about the bad, or go into depth about the main story. Its all really focused on the "smart and cunning" MC and his harem, and a smidgen about the regressor. This is definitely SUS. So I will be the whistle-blower like Cho-Hyejin. And this time like her, I won't be shamed for speaking up about something that's shitty.

Firstly, I tried to seriously read this novel. My mistake. I should have turned my brain off for 1000+ chapters to get to the good stuff. Don't do that, its not worth your time. From the way some reviewers were making it, RIM was similar to ORV and TCF and SC in that they collected companions. I thought, "oh, these characters we're meeting are going to be our goodest and most favorite companions with our MC!" Wrong. In the beginning, there was potential. SO MUCH POTENTIAL. But then author-nim decided its time to collect some waifus.

Each arc literally will have a corresponding waifu. Each of these arcs I will list as vaguely as possible: mage, commander, guild master, volunteer, sword, s*ave, whistle-blower, princess of a castle, chinese lady, and finally a dragon and her baby. Baby is included because someone's comment said they developed strong possessive feelings, much like mage.

Unlike other reviewers, I will provide context of what happened to each of these waifus, that author-nim put in for plot. Yes, the waifus ARE the plot for 185 straight chapters, no cap.

Spoiler

Mage is the most badly treated female character of them all. She becomes a yandere for MC, has several mental breakdowns because of MC, and from what other reviews say, this happens more, even after ch 185 of 1000+. She kills a teammate because of jealously, and MC fakes believing she didn't do it. In order for the team to grow without MC, she goes through the five stages of grief. We find out she put a hole through his wall to peek on him, cursed his bed if anyone else sat on in, put tracking magic on him and an alarm system if anyone gets too close to him. P.S., the basis for her curse is his tooth in his room, and she has something of his on her (most likely his s**en, since she goes into his room cause the bed also has a sleep curse on it). When she had her second major breakdown in a dungeon, MC basically feeds her a hallucinogen and illusion spell before she can kill anyone in the party. For this arc, they were meant to save people from a dungeon that would cause people to hear their worst fears, and suddenly our biggest problem isn't the people we need to save, but temporarily fixing mage. MC even planned to use it again on her.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Commander is the only one who knows how scummy MC is. She's honestly the coolest, knows what she wants, knows how to achieve it and makes deals with MC, for pretty much nothing in return because she's his kingmaker or whatever. Commander saved my reading experience a few times, but I haven't seen her much unless MC needs her help.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Guildmaster kissed MC at first sight, thinks he's hot and likes a scummy guy like him. Coincidentally, she's very powerful. Basically his sugar mommy. She's also cool, but the fact she starts to genuinely care about MC out of nowhere is jarring. Later, where the plot I thought was about a massive battle against a wave of monsters, it became MC running from guildmaster because she traded all intelligence for strength, and was pursuing him probably to do it with him. She became the BIG problem in this arc, not the literal full scale city battle with monsters.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Volunteer was a good Samaritan for the poor. In order to rope her into his guild, MC shoved a bunch of sophistry into her face about how poor people are actually evil, she almost gets r*ped because she disguised herself as homeless. That one instance was enough to turn her into a killer who would cleanse the streets of the poor. This was such a hamfisted way of getting a new waifu and brain dead way of showing how "manipulative" MC is. All he did was spout a bunch of edgelord cringe in her face and then she believed him right away. This happened in a day, mind you.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Sword is literally a waifu sword, the boss from the dungeon that induced hallucinations of your worst fears. MC pretended to be her loved one she was waiting for, after she became a sword, was attached to MC.

[collapse]

Spoiler

s*ave was the fastest waifu to become MC's s*ave. Literally became his s*ave. Because first timeline she was in love with him, even though its obvious he was abusive towards her, and as well towards mage. I would say he's still abusing them even in 2nd timeline, even if in this timeline he's supposed to be "better." Ugh.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Whistle-blower is another example of how "manipulative" MC is, just like with volunteer. Shoves a bunch of sophistry that SHE did the wrong thing by speaking up about the illegal stuff in her guild. That SHE wasn't smart enough to truly make a difference. And that SHE potentially made her guild mates homeless. He then takes her to an underground auction house to teach her that money can solve everything. This is all done so she'd be less strict with the illegal stuff MC would do in the future. Is this a "master manipulator" or author-nim just being a poor writer

[collapse]

Spoiler

Princess of a castle is just that, she has a crush on MC. Nothing else is done with her.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Chinese lady is a person we meet at that underground auction. She's also a crazy person, on similar power level to guildmaster. When MC is in a pinch, calls her name and she agrees to help, even though this is the second time they've met.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The dragon and her baby was the straw that broke the camel's back. Her baby was kidnapped from her, so she did the monster wave to get them back. MC holds the sword to the baby's neck to threaten the dragon into letting them kill her. Her desperate attempt to save her baby's life is to pronounce him her spouse: their lives are shared now and can't be taken back. So MC instead threatens dragon into believing that staying with him is her best option to stay alive, all for the sake of her baby. In exchange, he wants to experiment on her.

[collapse]

I've just spoiled all major plot points within the 185 chapters I've read. Idk how people can even compare the big three to this garbage. Everything about the regressor is interesting to me, but I can't possibly slog through useless waifu plots just to get that sliver of MAIN PLOT. There was only ONE heartwarming moment when MC gave out gifts, but these moments are probably few and far in between by hundreds of chapters. Basically, all these reviews are severely downplaying how bad MC, the harem members, and what it's "plot" is actually like. You're not gonna find reading RIM fun like the big three. The MC is not a well written "master manipulator, " its more like the author-nim fits things to exactly suit his words, basically giving him plot armor. When does his plans REALLY fail? Probably never.

Go ahead and read RIM and compare it to the reviews. MC was written too cringy for me. <<less

The MC has basically no libido and has definite plot armor, which can be a bit annoying... the women make up for his failings though, and the plot armor is only really bad occasionally. He is mainly just OP in his ability to convince people, which is pretty unique. It's also refreshing to have an MC that's as pragmatic as he is, very few others I've read so far even come close. Overall it's a really entertaining story about a manipulative as*hole that constantly rolls crits for charisma... more>> checks, and I highly recommend it.

Edit 877:
I definitely understated just how annoying the MC is with his harem... it's not resolved even by the end ffs. The ending itself is alright, not my favorite but not bad either (aside from the neglected harem). I still recommend it, but but down to a 4 from a 5 because of some inconsistent / forgotten stuff and just how annoying him ignoring his women gets. <<less

Starts out great with an MC that's all calculating and looks out for himself then he slowly devolves into a braindead moron that follows the 'protagonist' of the world's actions like a puppy. There's a lot of jokes about the MC and the 'protagonist' being in love with each other because lol gay joke, but I seriously think that the MC is in love with the 'protagonist' and that this is a bl novel in disguise.

Starts off good. Then gets better, and better, and better. It's simply a masterpiece, my only criticisms would be there is like one 10 chapter gender bender arch which is "meh". Personally, I f*cking hate gender bender sh*t so that criticism is very subjective.

On the other front, the MC is really good, I would put him next to the MC of Reverend Insanity in terms of quality and they are pretty similar in disposition. Machiavellian MCs are so, so awesome, I have immense respect for authors who manage to write... more>> them well. It's not easy to write smart characters after all. The world-building is great, the author's ability to get you in the feels is good, the progression, pace, side characters, love interests, antagonists, all done to perfection. Also translation quality is acceptable and very quick (30-35 chapters a week) <<less

Pros

  1. Premise and characters are (initially) interesting. Actually villainous MCs are super rare in these stories, so I was excited. Note the "was".
  2. Fairly unique take on the System/Tower setting. The way the MC's appraisal skill quips on how much better everyone else is than him was actually pretty funny.
  3. This one is a double-edged sword: The MC never really gets OP (compared to the characters around him), which means he actually does need to rely on his scheming skills. This leads me to...
Cons

  1. This is a story where the MC is supposed to be a schemer. After the main story starts... he's just absolutely terrible at it. Like, the worst teenage villainess can come up with better plots. Since this is supposed to be his strength, it kind of unravels the point of the novel.
  2. Characterization is bad, especially for female characters. A character's given personality at any time is determined by what the plot demands. This makes the MC do s*upid and/or impulsive things all the time, despite, you know, the entirety of the novel being about not being that.
  3. World building is just odd after a bit. The novel tries to pull off the "these people are ignorant rubes from a medieval time, so they're easy to trick/lead" idea, but most of the characters have been summoned from modern Earth, so it makes no sense. Magic is clearly D&D based, which is fun at first, but then the author becomes the world's most railroad-y DM before dropping the idea all together.
  4. The female lead is awful. Yandere characters are hard to do, and the author drops the ball super hard. In addition to not having a personality outside of "MC is my everything", many a plot point is just "female lead got upset and is trying to kill someone/blow them up". There is also a harem, which is similarly characterized.
If... more>> you are new to webnovels and/or can turn your brain off, this might be a novel you can enjoy. Otherwise, it will try you. You may also be able to enjoy this as a meme/so-bad-it's-good novel as well. <<less

Good concept, mediocre execution.

The concept: in a world where everyone else is given capability for incredible fantasy powers, Lee Kiyoung gets the ability to see crucial information about each person. He must then use his brains over brawn to survive. He is an anti hero, his qualities as an amoral, selfish survivor means he is not the "hero", but acts as a foil to the idealistic hero in the party by being the realist, or voice of cold reason.

So far so good, but a lot of time is spent focusing... more>> on Lee Kiyoung's "clever" ploys, but it just reads like a primary school kid's idea of a "smart" and "evil" manipulator. He is not clever, everyone else is just s*upid or they blatantly ignore his suspicious actions like NPC's in a video game. Its like when you take all the items in a room when the NPC isn't looking, and when they turn around, you are standing there next to the empty shelves and they can't put two and two together to figure out that you did it. He doesn't take advantage of psychological weaknesses to push people against one another, or take advantage of their personality or preconceptions, he just lies and deceives, very badly at that. But every strong person the author has put around him is a complete pushover, who always believes and does whatever he says. There are moments where it seems like he might get called out over his incredibly bad lies but so far it hasn't happened.

Any attempts to give any other character personality, or human qualities goes out the window whenever their brains needs to short circuit, so a plan of Lee Kiyoung's can work. Finally this might be a more personal preference, but the "yandere" character was getting pretty annoying for me, her character is just this gimmick of being an obsessed psycho that gets REALLY overused. She has no human qualities outside of this gimmick, no dreams she pursues, no relationships with other people, displays no emotions or reactions that don't have to do with her psycho obsession with the main character and 70% of her lines are the word "Oppa".

On a final note, I don't remove the possibility that the authors skills improve or through sheer quantity of chapters he writes a good arc or two, but I'm not staying around to find out. Because generally in long running series like this, the first couple arcs are the best because they have the most time to be planned and written and the author isn't flying by the seat of pants and making up new plots week to week and I think 60 chapters should be more than enough to give a good idea of the quality of a novel. <<less

The main character has insane plot armour so every situation ends up completely in his favour because of the regressor or his harem who will do anything for him because of a trait he has that makes him a magnet for psychos. He's willing to manipulate and lie at every turn and yet makes the same mistakes over and over especially when it comes to Hayan just to fill chapter after chapter with "oh no, the crazy woman really did the crazy thing I pushed her towards? I need to... more>> deal with this by saying more things that push her further into her obsession with me asap".

The biggest problem for me is the world doesn't feel real, most things (food, architecture, clothing etc) are barely described and it feels like the world only exists when the MC needs to interact with it. Strong people exist once he has a conversation with them and become a useful pawn or a quickly defeated enemy/scapegoat, commoners exist to be manipulated by his control over the media in a world filled with people stronger and some as smart if not smarter than him yet none can compete in any field he decides to control.

It was pretty good even up to the 300s so it's worth reading but it get repetitive. <<less

You know the tipical pimp in the story, whos only prupose is to be compared to the overpowered main character? I feel our MC is build to resemble that guy.

The story folows our main character, but what keeps the story engagin for is the fact that everyone has it s own agenda and our MC has to navigate thourgh them as best as posible with his wits and of course his little cheat. It s also engagin to read how MC rationel clashes with his humanity.

Truly, this story isn t... more>> really about fighting, it s more about politics, moraly questionable events included.

I think as of yet, ch 50, I still don t know the color of any monster, nor shape, same for characters, hair color is about all of the aparence description we are given, it s up to us to imagine each character based on their personality.

It s nothing revolutionary, and the writing is a bit rough on the corners but the execution is consistent with it self while introducing new surprises and misteries now and then that make me wana keep reading <<less

Review up to c108:

Yeah, like the review above me, the MC is kinda scummy.

He's not really evil though, just cruelly practical.

Eliminating all possible threats and supporting the lovely regressor while trying not to get killed by the yandere girlfriend (OP magician).

It's not your average KR novel so do beware while you read it.

Edit c232:

Plot progression is good so far, I rarely skip chapters as fillers are few while important information is everywhere.
Spoiler

The MC got an overpowered dragon wife and yandere dragon child who loves him. His 4th job change is a unique legendary due to the luck of being the first to study a dragon closely. The regressor pays LOTS of importance on the MC due to his management skills, influence (honorary bishop of the holy church, dragon's chosen, etc) and doesn't want the MC to leave the guild (Not like that's gonna happen anyway since the regressor is like the world's protagonist)

Plus, the MC is gradually starting to pay interest in Black Magic. I think he might study it later.

The Yandere girlfriend is "contained" to a certain extent, she won't kill or hurt some women around the MC as she knows that they are valuable resources to him (but she will still kill those not so important yet try to flirt with him).

Yeah, so good so far.

The MC is not your everyday MC. He cares A LOT about his safety and therefore his image. He will use everything he has to be insurance for his safety including innocent people. At first, he seems like he can use his own people as his meatshield, but later on, he develops a soft spot for those people, even can't bear to see their sad faces. The harem tags are indeed very correct, he has like... 4+ women that want him because of his unique characteristic that attracts crazy women.... more>> BUT, somehow the MC only sees them as attractive women and (so far) never develops romantic feelings even for one woman. His most interest is Kim Hyunsung (a male) who is the regressor. The MC cares and thinks a lot about him to the point he makes sure that the regressor's mental is stable and not depressed. I must say the bromance is much thicker than the romance and harem itself.

Spoiler for the bromance:

Spoiler

The MC always addresses the regressor with "lovely regressor", "cute", and "handsome". The MC often makes some analogy for him and the regressor as a couple and even married couple. They also often give gifts to each other. Some arc even has the MC turned into a woman and they have a date.

[collapse]

THIS MC IS VERY UNLIKEBABLE, likes to frame people that are in his way even though they don't deserve it. He can wage war coldheartedly for his benefit, but how he wages war and the way he handles it, making strategy and stuff, are VERY INTERESTING TO READ.

If I have to compare it with other novels, LCF for example, the MC is the tr*shy version of Cale. Weak, clever, cares for his people, but the path he chooses is full of dirty tricks. <<less

I ended up dropping this novel after reading about 120 chapters.

While the novel has a few flaws, they are small and easy to ignore.

What eventually drove me to drop this was the main 'love interest', Jung Hayan.

It's not because she's a yandere, though. I neither like nor dislike yanderes. If they are done well, I can even enjoy them.

What really drove me to hate this character was her uselessness. She's a powerful, genius magician but emotionally she's a wreck. A perfect example of a character with high IQ but with a rock-bottom EQ. She is basically a child in the body of a grown woman, unable to function without her 'parent', Lee Kiyoung.

Calling her a child is really a perfect description of her. Those of you who have read some of those japanese 'dad-adopts-little-girl' novels can exactly imagine what kind of feeling this character gives the reader: a helpless little girl that needs to be protected by their adoptive father.

While that kind of thing can be cute, it's no longer so cute when the 'little girl' is 21 years old. Initially I didn't hate it, but after reading 120 chapters of her childish behaviour, I couldn't put up with it anymore.

I became so frustrated because I really do want to continue reading. It's the other good parts of the novel that prevented me from giving a lower rating.

The novel is amazing. Period.

It's refreshing to read a story through the eyes of such a scum like person. I agree he isn't the best person neither is he amazingly smart but he is The best improviser. The whole story is like a play where he is the scriptwriter and does everything to reach his desired conclusion for each episode even if it means he has to fake illness, make deals with the devil or make the god shake hands with the said devil. He uses every cliche ever to... more>> make every character around him fall for him emotionally and use them. Obviously the story would be boring if he was only a manipulative tr*sh but that's not it. He take care of what he considers his in his own way and goes above and beyond to screw the people he hates. His inner tr*sh talks and his actual actions became a bit contradictory when he faces the characters he is attached to and that's the only point where he slightly deviates from his business minded setting.

The concerns regarding the harem or development of supporting characters..... well it's true that not all characters get enough stage time including his harem girls but the point is the characters get stage time in mini arcs so the all round development is there but in the early chapters it might seem missing to some. Plus personally I love it that the main focus of the story isn't the harem. His love relationship are mentioned only as a passing or as an interlude after a particular arc. The overall story is rather humorous in a dark way and has a mature point of view with a lot of grey areas that might seem debatable. You really need to read the story to understand what he is trying to do by keeping in mind that he has a end goal which he wants regardless of the decisions he has to make.

It is not a light read but it's a pretty good one. The pace is great, the character settings don't deviate and the flow of the story is basically like water so you should diffidently give it a try. You will laugh, cry, get angry or downright annoyed even though you know what you are reading are situations created by the MC on purpose. (I laughed a lot really)., basically you will enjoy it. :) <<less

I really don't like how the author writes. Sure the story is good, but I can't enjoy it when I can't even make out who is saying what, it's such a chore to try and figure out who is talking to who. It is so frustrating that a novel that I would have otherwise much enjoyed, is ruined due to the authors lack of sense in structuring sentences or simply writing down who is talking.

This novel isn't a masterpiece. I wouldn't even say it's very well-written. The only thing it has going for it is humor and likable characters and that's enough for me to give it 5-stars. Honestly the sole reason this review exists is because of the 2nd most liked comment and how, despite there being some good points, uninformed and occasionally just straight up wrong it is.

Here are my responses to some of the criticisms

1.'The Female Characters are unrealistic'

Now this one I kinda understand. The Female Characters are batsh*t insane.... more>> There's even a trait the author just gave to the protagonist out of nowhere to bullsh*t his way out of it. It's for the most part valid but

  1. Its a novel, I understand wanting realism but it shouldn't be a main part of your criticism considering its a fantasy novel
  2. Like I said, the writer offers an explanation (more of an excuse tbh) as to why all the Female Characters are abnormal.
2.'The MC is incompetent'

Now this criticism is just straight up ret*rded. The MC isn't Aizen but he is fairly intelligent. This complaint rides on the fact that barely any of his plans ever work out properly. But they seem to not recognize the bullsh*t this guy goes through. So any unpredictable factors go wrong in his plan it's absurdly comedic.

3.'The MC mistreats his friends'

This is basically just you whining about why he's not a goody-2-shoes like most other MCs. It's very clear the MC does care about his friends to some degree. You have no right to call a novel bad just because you dislike the MC.

Now onto the Ws:

This LN has a comedic undertone in basically every chapter. There are chapters, albeit rare, that would straight up make you smile. The humor, while sometimes not the best, never feels corny or lame

The characters are all extremely likable aside from the female leads. The first one in particular is really annoying especially when the ongoing arc doesn't centre around her. <<less
