Xiao Xiang Zi, a cloud spirit in heaven, and Chu Kong mess up the red strings of fate by accident during their brawl.

As a consequence, they are sentenced to be a fated couple in the mortal realm for 7 lifetimes as a punishment for not getting along with each other.

However, Xiang Zi sneakily reincarnates without erasing her memory, and unlike Chu Kong, she retains awareness and uses it to her advantage.

This novel is seriously overhyped.

The story barely had any depth and at times I felt like I was reading a cliff notes version of a xinxia novel instead of a full fleshed out story.

The MC is basically a brash, unthinking, barbarian girl that's as dense as a stone when I comes to romantic relationships.

... more>> The ML is smarter, but is a tsundere to the max towards the heroine, even when he's supposed to be in love with the her and it gets tiring to read.

I personally think, MC and the ML have a sibling vibe instead of lovers. They bicker like siblings in almost every interaction and they are both so inmature! I don't feel the love between lovers in them at all.

If you come to this looking for an epic romance because of reviews prepare to be disappointed because it never comes in the story. There's like two semi cute interactions and the moment passes quickly.
If you like stories with characters that barely even mention being in love and constantly argue this may be your cup of tea, otherwise I'd advise skipping this altogether.

Spoiler

Also, I don't get why people like the first two lifetimes because they were hardly interesting and I didn't get sad at the end of either one since there are no real stakes in the characters dying in the mortal world. I'll only get emotional if dying is treated seriously and that never happens in this novel.

I wasn't expecting much but I ended up really liking it.

The leads are cute, the story suits my preference (I like happy stories but not with too much happiness lol) and I like that it was short.

However, I do feel some characters and back stories could be written with more depth as I feel that most of them was just incomplete and could be written better.

Other than that, I genuinely like this novel. Highly recommended.

I've read this a few years back and totally do not regret rereading it again. This is a truly enjoyable read, much like the author's other novels. Although I felt that the ending came quite abrupt, it was a satisfying ending for both the main characters. I also like how there weren't too many misunderstandings. The female lead is honest with her feelings and didn't go around beating around the bush to express it. Though Chu Kong didn't want to admit, it was already quite evident LOL.

Overall a very fun... more>> and satisfying read, would rate 5/5. <<less

I like this. It has the same kind of vibes with 'Three Lifetimes' (which can be found in wattpad). Albeit, I'm more leaning towards Three Lifetimes because it was more romantic and literally husband chases wife because guy went through three lifetimes so he can marry girl in heaven (since girl is like the daughter of a high god or something). Girl just sneaked out of heaven and joined the guy so she can help him.

Anyway

Yeah, overall I enjoyed this. I love how cute ML was when he's jealous. I... more>> also like how it all came together. In some lifetimes, hints are dropped for the main climax of this story which is super cool and makes you curious.

I like MC. For me, she doesn't really have to change. I also feel like they don't need to change. Only their feelings for one another should change. From enemies to lovers kind of change.

I'm still curious why ML went to YueLao's abode in the first place. That's one question I really want to know. <<less

1st lifetime prime minister daughter & general son

2nd lifetime shifu & disciple

3rd lifetime tigress & wild boar

4th lifetime princess & general

The rest will be explain in the story hehe

I like all the characters. I like the personality of both MCs although the FL is like a weakling but it gets to her cuteness. The ML is arrogant or like a tsundere I like his strong personality and smartness, having this personality gives part on the FL lacking. They are truly match in heaven.

I liked it... quite a bit more than expected. I really do think that Chu Kong is my favorite part of the book, and how much they two main characters clashed was also just really fun to read. The crap they pulled on each other especially in the beginning was actually pretty funny, and also indicative of how little death and mortal lives mattered to the immortals. But I also think that how the first life time was viewed by Xiao Xiang was pretty insightful, or at least sad. Xiao... more>> Xiang recognized how fleeting and utterly lost a mortal's life time is. Once it is over, they are lost forever, moving onto the next life as if the previous never existed.

Of course, the main focus of this story was the romance, so the other factors were... slightly lacking. Specifically most secondary characters and the conflict, antagonists, etc. of the story. They were overall rather flat, as really, the biggest point of conflict was between the two main characters. I think the ending was alright, in terms of the rest of the story. This is more of a entertaining light read. I really loved Chu Kong. I like it when characters who are meant to be portraying the strong dominant archetype are more interesting. Chu Kong really just seems like a tsundere, shy, but honorable (generally) guy, who can be a bit of a brat, especially concerning Xiao Xiang. Xiao Xiang herself has less development than Chu Kong, as she remains relatively the same throughout the story, with more development in the very last lifetime

Spoiler

where she decided to give up on forcing Chu Kong herself to become an immortal.

[collapse]

She's shameless, dense, violent, and really brash. I like her though, to be honest. At times she has an childlike cruelty, but she generally means well? Well, she matures more at the very very end.

The leads in Seven Unfortunate Lifetimes are immortals sentenced to act out tragic love stories in order to teach them the value of love, life and fate. The setup is similar to Sansheng, Wangchuan Wu Shang (same author, similar story) but less heart-wrenching due to the humorous interaction between the leads and the need for variety between the seven lives to prevent the story from becoming too tedious.

Both leads begin as rather petty towards each other, with the female lead also slow towards her own emotions. While the male lead... more>> is stubborn and proud. However both are caring towards each other and despite their bickering, and inability to comprehend their own actions, are willing to sacrifice themselves for each other. Although it does require 7 lives for their relationship to mature. The lives primarily exist to allow the leads to grow and since at least one of them remembers their life as an immortal, aren't always taken seriously by the characters. However recurring characters do emerge from the second life, while an antagonist is established in the third.
Spoiler

Lives:
1-2 Only one of them remembers at a time and is required to protect and grudgingly raises the other while they're vulnerable. They begin to develop feelings but are mostly in denial.
3 A gimmicky life as a tiger and boar - sets the scene for the antagonist.
4 Both remember but their genders are switched.
5-6 Both remember and are sent to take down the antagonist of the series. Male lead's soul is scattered.
7 Similar to the first life, female lead remembers and needs to protect and raise the male lead so that he can become an immortal again.

The male lead develops strong feelings for her over the first life, having fallen for the real her and gradually becomes less petty. While the female lead has slow character growth until the last life, having been protected by the male lead.

[collapse]

Weaknesses - the plot was more developed than Sansheng, but the characters just seemed weaker. While I really wasn't a fan of the second life, where the plot was just misunderstandings due to a dense and irritating female lead. It would've been better from the male lead's POV or if the female lead's character wasn't such a contrast from her normal personality. <<less

Unexpectedly I really really liked this book. At first I only wanted to read this because I was tired of waiting for the live action. But now after reading it, I am actually waiting for the drama because the the novel being super good.

This is one of those rare novels while I read the entire thing without getting tired of the plot twists. I thoroughly laughed and cried reading this. Please read this novel. It will warm you up on a cold winter night. I promise.

Now for a brief Character... more>> analysis:

Chu Kong:

Spoiler

suprisingly for the first time ever the main lead was actually my favorite character. He is a little tsundere who likes the female lead very much but would rather die than admit it (literally). I loved all seven lifetimes of him.

The adorable Lu Hai Kong was definitely my favorite. Read the novel and I'm sure his story will tug at your heartstrings.

[collapse]

Xiao Xiang Zi

Spoiler

The female lead is super cute without being annoying. My only problem is she might appear a little weak sometimes. But I think her strong will and self awareness makes up for it. I liked all her lifetimes too. The first one she was sooo cool and the last one was my favorite with immense character development.

[collapse]

The side characters are all well developed and have their own personalities. This novel is fluff and feel good but don't be fooled it will make you cry with it's strong plot

Bonus:

Spoiler

Happy Ending!! The ML and FL got married and live together in their own courtyard in the heaven with a baby on the way. They also have a super adorable pet deer

This is one of the best reincarnation story here.

I really enjoyed their journey of 7 life times.

The FL is dense and s*upid whilst the ML is arrogant but shy and cute when facing FL.

The comedy part is truly hilarious especially when they got reincarnated as animals and also when they swapped bodies hahaha.

I wish to read more about their stories after they get together but anyway is happy ending after all.

Thank you author 😘

4.5 stars - the latter part is a bit lacking, the villain and side-CP kind of underwhelming, could have been developed more. Same with the extras.

But..

This was so entertaining.

... more>> I cried so hard during the first two lifetimes.

"I told you that you aren't allowed to sleep in the snow! You're not allowed to close your eyes in the snow!" - cue reader sobbing every time snow is referenced.

I thought this would be a fun, whimsical romcom - but I overlooked the 'tragedy' tag. I'm seriously impressed with how easily this author makes me cry. Read Sansheng by the same author before this one, which also made me shed some tears - despite knowing it would have a happy ending.

What's great about this novel: the humor, the slapstick, the MC and ML - and not forgetting Yanwang, the big CP shipper, and Heavenly Emperor Li's love of extreme dogblood plots, LOL.

I'm not sure I agree with the translator that the MC didn't have any development - it was just slow and subtle, and she was very reluctant to share her feelings with the reader and acknowledge them.

The premise and bickering between the CP is a lot of fun, and the leads are very lovable. No perfect FL or ML here. The MC is a money-grubbing, lazy, ill-mannered cloud fairy who consistently is dumb about feelings and romance, greedy, and wants someone to do her work. But she's also brave and fierce, although she downplays it and her outbursts of devotion to the ML seem to surprise herself for most of the novel. Definitely not a refined, Mary Sue-type leading lady, which is refreshing. I liked her a lot and she's a very funny narrator.

The ML is a tsundere with a really bad temper when in his original form, but brave and extremely devoted to the MC when in his mortal lives where he doesn't have his full memory. He's also extremely bad at expressing his feelings, but he constantly shows how much he cares about the MC. His vinegar drinking (jealousy) is very funny. Basically the CP are two thick-headed, stubborn idiots who fall in love early on, but it takes them several lives to actually admit it. The chaos in the chronically understaffed Netherworld and the crazy melodramatic fates that the unfortunately CP are forced to endure is a great mix of hilarious and sad.

Binge-worthy story and the translation is quite good, worth a read if you like xianxia romcoms with imperfect leads. <<less

This is by far my favorite novel, it's just enough drama, plot, comedy, and romance. I read this over again every time I feel down or want a nostalgia feeling. For lover of romance with no heavy angst and drama, go for this.

I was a bit discouraged to read this story because the tragedy tag but after I know that this had a happy ending, I decide to pick this story up.

I find this story plot was a bit similar to "Sansheng, Wangchuan Wu Shang", maybe because they were from the same author. But I still find the chemistry between MC and ML in this story was lacking (even a bit forced) compared to Sansheng and Moxi.

But it didn't mean this story wasn't good. It's just that I don't think it's enough... more>> for me to give it a full stars. <<less

This is good in the sense of the cute kind of way. Although I know that they would eventually be reincarnated but their heartfelt conversations/action is at times tear jerking. ML is so shy with his affections that I just feel like pinching him ahhh...

As the translator has mentioned, I do too agreed that across 7 lifetime, ML goes through so much emotional transformation that I felt FL has it easy with being silly on her second life. I guess this is another way of how the Heavenly Emperor... more>> wanted the theme of “wife chasing the husband”. <<less

I have always enjoyed watching and reading stories that involve heavenly tribulations and multiple lifetimes; this did not disappoint. It had a good balance between the comedy and the darker moments. The romance was sweet and I enjoyed watching the bickering couple slowly come to terms with their feelings after they returned to the netherworld.

Each lifetime was unique and tested both of them.

I would have to say my favourite lifetime was either the 1st or the 4th. The 1st was just so sad and created the biggest impact on Xiao... more>> Xiang Zi, as throughout each lifetime she would compare Chu Kong to Lu Hai Kong. I also really enjoyed the 4th lifetime since they both

had their memories and had reincarnated into an already married pair.

[collapse]
They learnt a lot about each other as the General and the Princess, and the political aspect was interesting.

The only downside I had with this novel is the ending. I felt it to be too rushed and the 'big bad' was not developed enough for me to care. Plus, the final lifetime stressed me out too much. I didn't know whether I was on Chu Kong's or Xiao Xiang Zi's side, as I understood both of their's.
Spoiler

Xiao Xiang Zi just wanted to get Chu Kong back so that they could return to heaven and get married as they had promised. But Chu Kong, who was now a mortal without the memories of their past lives, loved Xiao Xiang Zi. But, he knew the only reason she loved him was because she loved a past version of him and not the current him. I was conflicted between wanting them to get back together or for Chu Kong to continue as a mortal.

[collapse]
I just felt bad for him.

Overall, I would say there are flaws, but the romance and the comedy made up for it. I was often laughing at her jokes and inner thoughts. My only wish was that we got to see more from Chu Kong's point of view. I enjoyed the extra in which we saw a bit of Lu Hai Kong's life
Spoiler

after Xiao Xiang Zi's death.

So drama, so sad, so funny and so bittersweet!
The girl is a reincarnation of a rock. Has a rock’s virtue and flaws. Stubborn, determined, resolute and relentless. The ML is a little tragic, but also stubborn, determined, resolute and loyal to the bone.
It took them 7 lifetimes to settle things, that should give you some idea of their stubbornness...
I love it!

Recommended for light reading.

It was precious lighthearted and funny but not infuriatingly so (and that just makes it better).

A sort of palate cleanser you'll definitely appreciate, if you've been a bit blackened by all sorts of infuriating or downright illogical (and not in the fun way) novels out there.

The main pairing was not too angsty, it gave me a bit of fairytale like feeling....... Which was immediately doused with the cold hard but true reality of the stone demon's ending. I can't help but feel for Jin Luo.

After giving up her own her heart, having her soul scattered, wandering aimlessly as a scattered soul and literally ceasing to exist! She just........... didn't have anyone who stayed in the end.

I don't really blame Wu Nian, he did what a lot of us would have done. Still, it's sad.

One of my favorite xuanhuan stories. There's so much cute as well as a dash of angst and dramatic tension to keep the plot moving forward. The story is plot-driven, so the character development can feel a little lacking. Luckily, things never become stagnant because the author is constantly changing the status quo.

Honestly, ML and FL are both idiots, but at least they're each other's idiots.

Love this badass FL and her witty dialogues, love the Tsundere ML and his cute display of emotions. This is a slow burn because both of them keep denying their feelings for a long long time before accepting them and the process is hilarious too. Loved all lifetimes and the story is a lot better packed in 50 chapters instead of 200-300+ chapters these kind of novels usually take.

I just finished this in one sitting and really love it. Actually I don't like this author type of writing because usually this type is kinda boring me in the first few page. But surprisingly she/he wrote it eloquently in the way it's hilarious and lively so I am enjoying every page. Now I understand why people gave this high rating. It's so engaging. The author also give our Tsundere ML a very good character development. His development of character is even prominent than MC.
