The demons of this world run amok; it’s time for the children of heroes to fill in their own legends.

Unfortunately, you’re not the cold and incorruptible female lead. You’re not even the high-status, delicate and charming second female lead: You’re just the detestable cannon fodder female number three!

The original host was secretly in love with the male lead while a fanatic in harming the female lead from the dark. Till the very end, she was merely a stumbling block for the love between the male lead and female lead. She let herself get stepped all over by the second male lead and lived a life that could only described as ‘s*upid’.

“So you’re saying… as long as I steal the female lead’s man, I’ll succeed?”

“Apologies, your target partner is… the female lead’s little brother.”

“Little brother?”

“Yes, it’s exactly that little brother who’s hopelessly in love with his older sister. The one with a twisted heart and evil tendencies, vicious and merciless… that little brother.”

This was pretty good, bit plot heavy and Non-OP battles. Nearly every scene all the characters are at the verge of death my gosh.

A realistic normal FL is just trying to satisfy the systems requirements of following plot of being 'in love with' male protagonist as well as make the villain fall for her. Her impression of him from the OG book made her unable to think that this brother could ever love someone other than his sister so she only tries to befriend as normal (little did she know... more>> he totally fell for that lol)

The ending imo
Spoiler

Seems like an open ended Sad ending? I couldn't tell with the mtl but definitely ML has lost normal human thoughts and morals and is just this spooky black mist with killing urges. Wtf. Atleast FL sticks with him and is slowly teaching him to act normal.

Loved it, the translators did an amazing job but I can't help hold resentment to the Author somewhat (thus -1 star because overall I still have a good impression of this story. Just that I wouldn't reread it because the ending was BS). My review is similar to reviewer Rube before me.

Keep in mind b4 reading: The romance is very much slow burn, and the Black lotus (imo it's not the same as the western's loved view of Yandere) aspect does show itself strongly when it arrives, so don't be... more>> surprised and complain about it lmao, it says so on the tin already. Other than technical issues with the plot, I really don't see what other people complain about. Every action was pretty much explained later on, so don't trust reviews that haven't completed the story.

It was a little hard to get through the first few chapters due to the System (as other reviewers have complained) which felt forced and wasn't handled all that well, especially during the final arc..
Spoiler

Major spoilers for extras here and small rant from me: We learn that the modern System (basically a Capitalist BS excuse to have the System exist) is apparently so poor that they decided to send random college students to solve their problems for them across space and time in parallel universes.. But basically it's just an incompetent leader and their assistant casually holding the ropes of a million lives and then dumping all their work on the ML due to his wish of evolving into a human from his book character model. Which is f_cking annoying when you know how strong he was previously

[collapse]
but otherwise as we learn more about the characters, I especially became attached to the main pair (I was surprised the author managed to redeem the ML after his BS personality at first– the growth of these characters were beautiful to watch).

Plot

Anyway, the plot developed nicely despite the author's love of jumping about; (which btw I feel the author is trying to write a drama where you can visually see the transitions on screen, and then they forgot to actually write the transitional phrases in their document lmao.. But the translators were angels in helping adding in markers sometimes to indicate the shift in scenes.) The mystery ties up well, but some paragraphs could've just been thrown out entirely due to over-explanation that just makes something simple into something complicated.

Ending

The ending was not satisfying at all, even with the supplement of the extras I daresay I feel slightly even more upset! I could puke blood at it tbh, it felt like all that growth and hardship that our main pair went through was slightly for naught as the biggest enemy of humanity finally overcame them– capitalism, lol (derogatory). I can bare it only because the translators also showed their disatisfaction at it lmao.

So why did I give this novel 4 stars despite my very numerous complaints?

Because I love the characters! It's hard to make up a set of people who your readers will actually grow to care about, actually. Rather than throwing away the original ML of the story as another unattainable but very attractive male character the FL doesn't end up with, I love that he become somewhat of a big brother model to the FL. Just wish that more of these little relationships developments occurred, but unfortunately the ML (LF) takes most of the spotlight afterwards. Knowing his personality though, it makes sense and I can only lament *shrugs*. The original FL (MY) sometimes felt like a self-insert to me sometimes, as at one point she wrongs the FL (LMM) but never explicitly apologises. They did warm up to each other eventually though, and there's no lack of strong female characters here.

All in all, good story. It could definitely be further refined but then we'd never have any published books ever since then every author would wait for their books to be perfect (which is objectively impossible), would we?

Thank you translators for your hard work! <<less

A gripping read. Would've been better with some proper transitioning between the scenes instead of jumping from one frame to the next and takes you half a paragraph to realize the scene changed places and people. Would recommend reading the manhua adaptation (unfinished ATM, around chapter 91+) alongside this one to get a better understanding.

The story was lacking in a good and bad way, the plot arcs can be really unfulfilling but it's realistic to say that their cases cannot be rounded up perfectly.

And in a bad way, the original... more>> main cast were relevant to the story and maintained mostly of what's true to their character, but in extremely annoying form. I don't understand their importance and there's a constant sway from wanting to beat them up to petting their heads. Their characters feel unfinished and incomplete compared to the MC&ML pair to which I have absolutely no complains.

Both of the main leads are extremely inexperienced in the matters of love and it was such a joy to watch them grow. <<less

The plot really hooked me when I start reading this. Since I can feel some challenges.

The ML is black bellied, he takes revenge especially when it comes to his sister (not blood related) which he secretly have feelings.

So when our MC arrived. The hostess (the body she possessed) already made a mistake. The orig FL already fell into her scheme causing the orig FL to be endanger.

... more>> Thats the reason why the ML who is pe*verted inside, trying to hurt our MC.

Gladly, the MC is quick witted. Though she's not entirely that smart. She can immediately find a way how to avoid or prevent herself dying in the hands of ML. Is just that, she's reckless.

For the mission, in order to complete the task, she didn't think twice before throwing herself towards danger, makes her sometimes s*upid. Well, its not that bad since she got the main characters trust in the end.

The thing that I'm pissed off, is the system. Wanting our MC to get close to the orig ML while also getting close to the ML.

But I still give 5 anyways, since I enjoyed it, and waiting for the next updates♥️ <<less

Finaly its a relief to see a normal transmigrator. Its a good read. Fluffy but not s*upid. Good plot. Actualy all characters are good. Original ML and FL are surprisingly still worthy of being ML and FL. Didnt expect much when started but was captured into it.

IMMENSELY GOOD READ!

And great work on the translation!

I really enjoyed this, it was probably my first foray into 'non-MC' type novels. Although I must say first time I read it, I skipped entire chunks of a certain part of plot, mainly coz there was no FL/ML development wakekek

REALLLY WORTH READING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MC and ML get married

[collapse]

I can see why this got glowing reviews.
- the plot isn't completely romance and was actually enjoyable imo
- the MC and newML have a lot of development as characters. MC became enjoyable to read later.
- the world building isn't too shabby and I felt like the plot was well thought out- but I don't really remember it well enough to be sure about that

I don't feel strongly about some of the criticism.
- Yes, the system was somewhat useless but I feel like it did give more freedom to MC. Could it have been better used? Totally. Did I mind that? No.
- OG ML, FL being bland. That's true. But I didn't mind that either, I can totally see some real novel having characters like them being the main focus. As for ogFL being petty.. I would rather see a flawed character being disturbed by someone trying to seduce someone she loves than to see her act like Barbie while Raquelle is around Ken. Sure, she could've acted better but it wasn't something that contributed to me dropping the story.
-Maybe I got used to it but the translation isn't bad..

Now.... onto the ACTUAL reason why I dropped it:
The new ML was an ARSE. "But Machhhhh he's designed like that. He becomes way better later on!" I completely agree with that! Other comments have addressed that too- he did try to kill her in the beginning but that's not it! There is still something else after that which made me drop it: the way he acted after a lot of his character development.
Spoiler

The wedding was ICKY. He put her under a SPELL and went along with her plans to get married to him despite thinking that her normal self would be okay with it. I can think of two rebuttals:
-his trauma
That excuses why he acted like that previously up until that point. But a wedding in that society was no small deal and to not have her complete consent while going through with it, knowing that she would be socially alienated after divorce if she was headstrong about not agreeing with the marriage is HORRIBLE. It's forcing her to stay married to him. Sure, that's what he wanted- someone that won't leave him. But at that point, I wish he had seen her as more of an equal and considered her emotions as something important to him and refused the marriage. It was all so horrible to read. I was waiting for him to call it off or postpone it in the last minute so she gets to enjoy her wedding not while under a trance and with full consent.
- she was never actually under a spell in the first place
He thought she was. He was forcing her in his mind. That was heinous. His intentions is more important than what actually happened in my honest opinion.
I couldn't bear it anymore... when she revealed that she was not under that spell, I was hoping she would leave him because of his deception but now I think I was innocent hoping for that, considering the system's existence.

[collapse]

Rated it a 2/5 for above positive points. But I'd suggest reading the spoilers if you're apprehensive about reading stories with red flags. I wouldn't recommend it.

Sorry about the typos and grammatical errors in advance lol <<less

This one was a freaking GEM. The author has a very deft, delicate touch, especially when it comes to demonstrating the mindset of the characters. I had started reading this one as the manhwa first, and it was good, but I think I like the book better since it's harder for me to really understand what the characters are thinking because their actions and thoughts are so different in this. Lu MiaoMiao (LMM, transmigrator) is the heroine we all need - she's neither dumb nor a super genius, not powerful... more>> and has no translatable skills when she is dumped unceremoniously into her new home. LMM is supposed to both attempt to split up the OG leads by backstabbing the OG FL and romancing the OG ML, AND romance the 2nd ML, who is obsessed with the OG FL and high key homicidal to anyone who might threaten the OG FL. These two missions are directly at odds with each other, especially since if she gets caught harming the OG FL the Black Lotus will kill her IMMEDIATELY. Poor LMM is spending her time in equal measures panicking, frantically trying to keep the story line going without getting herself killed by Mu Sheng, (MS, Black Lotus) or just trying to decide whether she should be cussing or crying or maybe both at once because of the sheer insanity of her task. LMM is an emotional brick most of the time, and is so paranoid about MS (which SHE SHOULD BE HE'S A FREAKING PSYCHO - he frames and has her entire household massacred in the original story within the first 2 days of her transmigration) that she genuinely can't tell when she's doing something that pulls him closer or offends him, and MS is a prickly individual to begin with before LMM and puberty both smack him in the face HARD. The scene with setting up the canopy and bells made me laugh so hard - poor dude! MS is having feelings other than hatred of all mankind and worship of his sister, and he does NOT know what to do with those.

The side characters are also SO well written - Mu Yao (MY, MS's adopted sister and OG FL) and Liu Fuyi (LF, MY's love interest and OG ML) are beautifully written and sympathetic characters. LF is deeply in love with MY, but has a low EQ and never expresses himself (and more importantly never says anything unnecessary, so it doesn't even occur to him to indicate anything one way or another) leaving MY constantly feeling neglected and ignored while LF is nice to everyone around them. LF also has the issue of being entirely too pretty so all the girls flock to him and leave MY feeling hurt and forgotten. MS is trying to use this to drive a wedge between the two and snatch MY away from LF when LMM drops out of the heavens and basically lands on his head via the transmigration. Comedy ensues as LF figures out REAL QUICK that LMM doesn't actually have any interest in him and starts pushing LMM to be around MS all the time with LMM and MS basically stalking around each other like a pair of cats trying to figure out if they're about to be in a huge fight or if it's safe to go back to ignoring the other one.

MY is now the head of their family since the death of her parents and entire household 5 years ago due to sabotage and betrayal that goes back 20 years before the current timeline. The story unfolds slowly and has twists and turns that I REALLY didn't expect but were so well done, and I flew through this novel kind of ignoring everything else around me. The development in the romance between LMM and MS is the star of the show, but the development between MY and LF is also SO well done, and I love dearly the themes of blood family might betray you and stab you in the back, but the ones you genuinely decide to let into your heart and give your loyalty to who reciprocate are the ones to keep and safeguard. There are a lot of surprisingly touching moments interspersed with comedy that is excellently written and the translation quality is impressive. I think my favorite scene is in the later chapters when MS comes back late and is scared of LMM finding out what he has been up to and her attitude is "mu*der and arson? Whatever - I knew who you were already." It's so sweet! <<less

4-4.3 stars - the weird structure and kind of deflated ending deducted some points from an otherwise enjoyable story with good writing.

The Pros: The CP has a nice dynamic - not something very unique or entertaining, but they have obvious chemistry so while it's not really shown how and when the MC falls for the ML, it doesn't seem unrealistic when she finally responds to his feelings in an unmistakable way that is clearly not because of him being her mission.

The ML - he's creepy and maybe a... more>> bit annoying in the beginning, but he does get better. He's the typical morally grey, super powerful, on-the-verge-of-blackening, domineering and otherworldly handsome ML with a pitiful background full of abuse. Unlike in some novels I did find that the descriptions/flashbacks to his past made him a sympathetic, tragic character who really did need someone to love. He also never went completely overboard when it came to the MC, although he was close one time. His early obsession with his adopted/foster sister made sense in context (although still creepy). His falling in love with the MC also made sense.

There were a couple of steamy moments that very pretty consensual, and one towards the end that was a bit dubious, but I think that has more to do with the way it was written and maybe with the translation (overall good, but there were some parts that weren't translated correctly, and quite a few typos and other mistakes). Most of the time their dynamic once they became a couple was pretty sexy, although not that explicit (but more than what you normally get from novels published on JJWXC).

Extras: the one with

Spoiler

the ML's parents

[collapse]
was both revealing and terribly sad. The last extra was fun and tied up some plot holes/inconsistencies with the system and stuff about MC's original world mentioned in chapter 1, but also ended really abruptly, which was a little annoying. Still well-written overall.

Cons: The MC's two missions - neither really made much sense and seems to have been made up by the author just to create tension and make the ML jealous. In the end it was unclear why the MC transmigrated - normally the MC gets a mission to change part of the original story, but here the MC was just supposed to both follow the original plot, just with the add-on that she had to make the ML fall in love with her, but the ending was supposed to be the same as in the original story, which made no sense. She was apparently supposed to prevent the ML from blackening, but this was never outright stated as her mission, so it was not clear why she wanted to prevent him from blackening, except to save herself from being abused.

The MC's feelings towards the ML - it should have been more clear when she fell in love - there were signs that she was attracted to him, but she treated him as a mission up until after he forced her

Spoiler

to agree to his proposal. Then after they got married suddenly she was aware of her feelings for him and willingly took initiative to sleep with him and then was completely in love with him from then on.

[collapse]

There were a lot of problems with the structure, as mentioned by other reviewers. Not only were there a lot of abrupt shifts from one scene to the next, but there were a lot of weird parts that did not make sense in context. E.g.

Spoiler

why did the ML's foster mother allow the concubine to abuse him if she was supposed to be a good person who protected him and in the end sacrificed herself for him? Why did the ML's spell not work on the MC when he forced her to accept his proposal, and why did the MC agree to marry him anyway - and why was she not more upset that he tried to force her to marry him and even quickly and out of the blue fell in love with him?

[collapse]

The ML's foster sister was a bit annoying - kind of wishy-washy. It seems unlikely that she didn't know how he was beaten and abused by her family (but mainly the concubine? This part was unclear, but maybe I skipped it by accident. And why did she suddenly mistrust him and even guarded against him, when she had known him since they were children, and what he was telling her made a lot of sense even if it was not something she wanted to hear?

Spoiler

The sister's love interest, the SML, was clearly too hesitant and wishy-washy with other women, even though he was a good guy. The ML was right to criticize and distrust him based on the available information at the time, and he was right to point out that his sister didn't trust him and she was wrong for not depending more on him, especially when she kept saying that he was their family's hope.

[collapse]

The side-CP was general not that compelling and most of the time they were just kind of there, not doing much. The additional 'evil SFL' (she wasn't really though) also didn't do much and seemed to be often forgotten by the author.

Overall probably not a novel I would re-read, but it was fairly interesting even if a bit draggy at times, and the CP was nice and quite sweet. <<less

were pure sweetness. I loved the hurt/comfort moments the most. While the true romance occurs relatively late, the author sprinkles satisfying/intriguing moments between them into the story from the start that left me anticipating for more so I didn't get bored. The novel has an interesting composition, while it's not heavily focused on romance I felt that it didn't neglect it either, it was just a slow burn I guess. But that made their relationship at the end even more satisfying, since the pace leading up to it wasn't too fast. Oh and there were some not so innocent moments, although they were vague (but not as vague as most other novels!).

I have to say that there were some frustrating/bittersweet moments but it made sense why they had to be in the story. I also feel like the author could have written the ending of the main part and the last side story a little more elegantly but I guess it does just enough, my imagination will have to do the rest. <<less

I've been scrolling past this novel for sometime, the summary always put me off.

I finally decided to give it a chance and wowww guys this novel is a must read!!

FL is unique, it starts off a bit chuuni but she's a really fun character to read!

ML is also such a great character, hardworking and plays off of FL's nonsense really well.

Not overly faceslapping, intense drama - more of a great read to pass the time. Guaranteed that you'll be s**ked in by the end of the first chapter!

It's rare to see a system who was so strict with the plot until MC had to rack her brain in order to find a loophole to change the outcome of the story without violating the system's rule. But if the system wanted the story to be exactly like the original, why he had to make the second mission? Wasn't it a bit contradictory?

Spoiler

The system gave MC mission to earn ML's affection while in the original story, ML hated MC so much and even tortured her everyday to vent his anger and frustation. Well, it's a good thing that ML could love MC but didn't it mean that that the story won't be the same as the original?

[collapse]

But it didn't matter because thankfully, the story was quite interesting. In the beginning, it's a bit hard to read this novel though because the original protagonists (except MC) were a bit unlikable. Mu Yao was prejudice, short-minded, and rigid. Liu Fuyi was the type of man that I hated the most. He was kind and gentle to everybody (including women) and subconsciously often gave a false hope to many women. And worst of all, he was so dense and oblivious to the other party's feeling. Mu Yao was often hurted by this side of him and ML hated him because of this too. Meanwhile ML was so arrogant and vicious. He often made MC suffer in the beginning and almost made her lost her life. But gradually, his heart was soften by MC's warm heart until he finally fell in love with her. Mu Yao also became a bit more broad-minded and she slowly tried to accept ML the way he was as her little brother. As for Liu Fuyi, I didn't know whether he changed or not because he rarely had any interaction with other women after getting married.

The ending was actually a happy ending but it still felt bittersweet to me.

Spoiler

It's because I read the truth behind the tragic love story of ML's parent in the side story. It's so tragic it made me cry. Too bad the author killed Consort Zhao off the screen because she was the cause of all those tragedies. I really wanted to see her and ML's confrontation before he killed her.

[collapse]

A bit suggestion for the translator: I hope the transition between scenes and before changing the POV could be smoother because sometimes it's a bit confusing to read since there's no separator or note before that. <<less

This was a good read. Different arcs were actually interesting and made me binge-read it. Also, like the development of the romance between FL (Ling Miaomiao) and ML (Mu Sheng). The ML was initially a jerk who also got his own character development. Meanwhile, I'm glad that they didn't villainize OG FL and OG ML and still remained within the scope of OG plotline.

For me, the only con was the ending could be better. I felt that even the extra chaps were not enough. Also, I also felt complicated to... more>> FL's feelings for ML bc she didn't show signs that she truly fell in love with him or their relationship just a mission. <<less

This novel for me felt very warm despite the near-death situations the protagonists had to face always. Loved our main characters very much.

The original ML and FL were like older siblings but it is our ML and FL that were so colorful which makes you yearn.

Despite the enemies-like beginning they had the end was so devotion filled, it was very lovely. Our ML would express his love and obsession in almost every chapter after he realizes his feelings and while the FL isn't as expressive as he is, all her... more>> actions show us that she loved him just as much and it really was lovely and a little heartbreaking to watch them go through it all.

Unfinished Review-

I wholeheartedly love this novel, I read till ch 30 and I'm going to put it on hold until the whole novel is completely translated. I started this with the intention to MTL but the MTL were too hard to follow.

As for the novel, the characters are such a breath of fresh air. They are all unique and have motivations that don't have everything to do with hurting the FL like in so many other novels. The plot actually has value outside the love story and isn't just filler... more>> for the love story. I hope it continues to be interesting as the story develops. I adore this novel. The writer is really good. This is a light hearted wuxia novel and other than the unnecessary transmigration (which takes away some world immersion), this is one of the much better stories in this genre. The writer really cares about their characters, not compromising any of them for the plot. There are many subtle nuances and minute details in the novel. And writer doesn't use the yandere tag as a way to exploit or propagate harmful behaviours or to romanticize r*pe. (There isn't any here). This... more>> is actually what I think of when I think of Yandere Male Lead. So one who is desperate for the female lead, willing to die or kill but is unable to harm the female lead. The manhua takes away alot of the likable aspects of the characters and takes away their dept. There are just so many aspects of this novel which I absolutely adore. <<less

This is interesting. The plot seems unique, the relationships are complex and the romance isn't linear like many novels I've read on this site.

I like the MC. She's not some overpowered assassin, nor scheming b*tch. She's intelligent and insightful and doesn't consider the missions as mere game quests. As a mtter of fact, this is the first time I've seen a novel intertwine the missions with the plot of the novel in such an interesting manner. You go through the story and things are unravelled on their own little by... more>> little. It feels very much like a psychological thriller or a detective novel set in a fantasy setting.

The narration is both very beautiful and very criptic. The author uses the narrative style we often see in movies: While one set of characters talk about a topic, the scene moves to another scene dealing with the same topic - either through dialogues between other characters or through flashbacks. The problem is (and this is just my personal thoughts), this narrative technique works brilliantly in some chapters, while it makes other chapters very cryptic and confusing. Kudos to the translator for doing such s great job at portraying the intricacies of the narration so well in English. The characters themselves are very well done. The only complaint I have is regarding the original novel's FL. She just annoys me for some reason. She's not a bad person, neither is she a naive white lotus. It's just that her thought process seems way too narrow in some ways. (In the novel, she is described as someone who sees the world in "either black or white", which I believe is absolutely accurtare in describing her.) I don't know if I'll change my opinion later, but for now, I feel that she isn't a good match for the original ML, nor does she deserve the overwhelming and unconditional love she gets from her brother (our ML).

Sorry for that rant.

Tl;dr: The novel is very different from the concept of 'light novels' in general. There's an intriguing plot and many interesting characters.

Definitely RECOMMENDED! <<less
