One day, I was called out by my fiance, the first prince, Leon-sama and asked to come to the gardens of the royal palace. When I got there, Leon-sama and a lovely woman who clung to him awaited me… eh? He wants to break off the engagement? Wouldn’t that mean I won’t have to receive that severe queen’s training? Great!

There seem to be a lot of these kinds of stories lately, after Duke's Daughter translation started off, lol... but it seems interesting. I can't get a good grasp of the MC yet but I hope she doesn't just turn out to be a dumb bimbo.

I'd classify this as: Comedy/Shoujo/Romance with reverse harem themes. Lots of people interested in our OP protag. Pure, adorable, fun fluff.

I usually don't comment on NU but I do want to since I actually disagree with a lot of the comments here.

First and foremost I think you need to remember this is a pretty cute and fluffy story. Don't go looking for dramatic inter-kingdom politics in a cute shoujo romance. You'll be disappointed.

However, this is an absolutely adorable story that I honestly never wanted to stop reading. I was very... more>> disappointed to see that it's on hiatus (I search by completed so I assumed it was finished but apparently not). 'Breaking off the Engagement' is an EXCELLENT Comedy/Romance/Shoujo story. There are plenty of unique characters, the main character does develop quite a bit over the course of the story, and there are no tragic events.

It's. Cute.

The whole premise is that the slightly bad-at-romance main character is very OP and lots of people find that very attractive and charismatic. What I love is that there are both guy and girl fans of the MC, and those who are turned down are mature about it and become friends instead. That's exactly what I like in my fluff romance.

I don't think it's fair to be disappointed that the obviously tropey story is tropey? Not everything is going to break the mold. What matters to me is that it's good at what it does. It's comedic without ever stomping on anyone's feelings. There are a lot of really interesting male and female characters. And the OP main character is OP without being a DBZ character. What I mean by that is that she's OP no doubt. But she lets others have their spotlight, doesn't constantly have new breakthroughs, and is confident in her own ability. <<less

Kind of funny how lots of people here in this review section keeps saying that the FL is s*upid. If I were her, I would do the same instead of being a bit*h and stalker since someone ended their engagement off. For your information if she really did react and didn't want to break things off then what if the prince really didn't love her (just what if we don't have the pov of the prince, we don't know the prince intention and so on.) Be a matured woman... more>> and walk out of his life like bit*h he already said, straight up at your face that he wanted to marry someone off with her sweet nickname "ange" and want to break your engagement. (What are you gonna do be a f*cking loser and don't accept things? And just cry it all?) Well I would walk the f*ck out of there. 🙄🖕🤣 What I hate the most is those people who says are you misunderstanding something chuchu 🙄 bit*h he already said in my face and he even have a girl beside him. Whatchu gonna do? F*ck your life and be the villainess who have the line " you broke my engagement with the prince I'll punish you."🤡

Oh yeah and the FL doesn't even have a feelings for the prince so why should she care, the prince should man up instead of making her jealous (even though she doesn't have feelings for you, boy) and neglecting her🖕🖕 <<less

I just recently started reading this one and I have to say: in regards to the broken engagement, she doesn't look that dense to me. At most, she's the kind of person that really needs a more direct approach, or else she wouldn't notice you.

Spoiler

She clearly doesn't love the prince, taking the whole situation as nothing more than a meddlesome arranged political marriage that's in her way to live as she want.

The prince is indeed pitiful, but mostly due to his own mistakes. Apparently, he took her for granted and, instead of courting her (or just getting to know each other), he just... well, f*cked it all up making the worst possible decision.

I couldn't keep reading when the protagonist was STILL explaining to various other characters that her engagement was broken, to many different over-the-top exclamations of OMG! And Have You Told Your Father! And I Can't Believe You Told the King! Ad nauseum in the third chapter. It would be alright if their reactions were different, or it served some purpose, but they're literally the same conversation written over and over (with different characters). It's presented in a way that expects us to laugh but it isn't funny at all. It's... more>> just cliche and nonsensical. <<less

The start of this story was frankly quite interessting. A strong female tomboy as the lead, a bit naive but it's all quite understandable whitin confines of the story. It was all quite refreshing to be honest

Hower after the first cupple of chapters it devulges into a shity harem comedt

New characters who are (or will be soon) I love with the MC are introduced all the time. Sweet moments where you might get some feeeels, gets draged out so when it's at last resolved you just sigh and think f*cking... more>> finaly. The MC is the one saving grace in this story. If I squint my eyes (heavely) and ignore all the harem bullshit. Then this could be a sweet coming of age story of a girl yearning to be strong and free, breaking free of the chains that binds her and slowly discovering what love really is. But thats sadly not what this is.

This is a story that has questionable internal logic, badly planed story structure, weird adventures into drama at some points. And most importantly it is saturated with utterly forgetable harem members and side characters. There are better stuff out there don't waste your time on this <<less

Hmm.. Dense Protagonist or you could say a pure girl I guess. Miserable fiancee for her to not even able to look in the eye. Some chapter was missing in the index at the end so be careful. It a nice story but an annoying translator? Which dropped it and say "appeared like a storm and leave like a storm", I hope the translator got blown up away by the storm too. :P

A story borne out of a misunderstanding of the dense variety. Though, the MC can't really be blamed since no one ever tells her anything. She's also refreshingly independent. Not much darkness/angst/tension, it's a lighthearted story.

Finding it enjoyable so far.

After reading the first 22 chapters, I am hooked. This is a dramatic comedy revolving around a certain prince's pants-dropping level of hubris. It is with great anticipation that I wait to see how all this plays out. However with the story's (Excellent I might add) pacing, it would seem that the story could easily resolve in just 50 or so chapters, the raws have a total of 166. It seems there is more to this story than there might seem.

It's a nice, cute type of novel that is good for easy reading. I was not expecting the direction the story took after the first chapter, but it was really funny after I finally understood the twist that was not very obvious in the first chapter. If you don't get it, it might be confusing for the first few chapters.

Only one chapter but this looks pretty good actually. The hook (aspect of plot used to keep the reader's interest) is subtle (for a WN) so I'm actually curious to find out more as more chapters are released. Rating pending.

Till this point, the story was okay. Nothing too great, nothing too bad. It was somewhat enjoyable. The comedic element is less and it is not serious either.

This novel is that of a great read, some might even say this is one of the best out there, where tons of shitty novels forcing plots and ooc mc's left and right like reading some fanfiction and still having the rating of 4.0-4.7. The only thing I could say is this is a true story where every characters are alive, what the author gave to you is what you are given. A pity people can't see such works as great because this doesn't have those great characters, fight scenes... more>> nor tactical prowess. This story is great because of every bit of the story is just flowing and every bit is natural, as you could expect of a great slice of life, even the tensions and humour are natural, sadly it doesn't have those explosiveness that everyone wants to see. This is an artwork, a classic you might say, it isn't like the trends, but reading it is relaxing and fun.

Character development, as I've said, the author wrote the setting, the characters lived on it. Everyone is developing like the story is alive.

Characters, because this is built as a slice of life comedy, the characters have their own quirks so mostly everyone gives an impression.

Plot development, as you can see, the author gives us a setting and introduce a character, how the characters solves them is how the plot develops.

Plot, check the summary and there on out the ride begins.

Writing quality, this is one of those well written nothing excessive and just flows easily, the characters are stiff you might say, but it is in range of the setting and their characters, so a well thought out and planned dialogues and soliluquys, even the world building isn't excessive and would incite your imagination. The only thing that is bad is it's hard to imagine the characters if you don't give much info, the author might've planned for the readers to imagine them, so it's a bit okay. If the author introduce a new environment in the later chapters, and not just the back and forth from the fief and the capital, I'd just leave this 5star be.

Well I want to atleast help this great author to improve the rating of his/her work, so even if not I might still give it a 5. Unless it devolves around it's path. <<less

I like this novel because it's quirky and the FL, Lilliana, is extremely strong (like a female warrior) and sweet yet considerably dense. Her friends and family are all fun characters and there are many people who are after Lilliana as both love-interests and as literal worshippers haha. The story isnt heavily romance but is very comedic and almost slice of life-esque, which makes this an easy read :)

In short this story is just about a tomboyish girl wanting to get out of her engagement and freedom for herself.

At first you might think the MC is a airhead and dense but when you start reading it seriously you can see that MC is not that dense or airhead unlike another character.

MC is a understanding, gentle and pure so she couldnt guess the other factions love for her. In fact she only has goodwill. (I support the shipping of MC and Ryan. And some other imaginations about the boys)... more>> <<less

This series starts out like it is going to be quite generic, but it quickly picks up and becomes something really original. It seems like it could become a reverse harem at any point, or a romance featuring any of the different male/female prospects, but at the end of the day it seems to have a much more interesting angle.

The first 10 chapters are well translated and flow nicely, but from 11-51 the translations are spectacular and definitely do justice to the story as it starts to pick up. The... more>> second translator specifically set a target chapter to translate until (chapter c40 on here, or chapter 51 altogether), which means that the currently translated story ends at a very satisfactory point almost as if that were the end of the story. <<less

My first ever review of anything ever. This book is quite frustrating, the character is dense, not funny dense but dumb dense. It's like watching a horror film and seeing the crew go "split up and search for clues". Yet this sort of thing happens every 7 or so chapters. Frustration from this can't be fixed with "oh but it's okay, she just doesn't know".

That's the thing, our character makes bad decisions and bad things happen for her. Rather I would like to see her make the right decisions and... more>> bad things still happen to her, and she has to then overcome them. Being raised as a queen who somehow is OP to the point why you question the existence of having soldiers. Who does she need protection from? And why? Her plot armor is dense, it can collapse upon itself and form a black hole.

She needs to think for herself. This frustration makes me want to write a book in itself on what she should have done instead.

Sorry for mess since this is my first review, not sure of formula on how to even write a review. <<less

What a bad novel...

The pacing is horrible and repetitive, you spend 3 chapters repeating the same setting over and over and over with the same exclamations of surprise and the same apologies and the same lines said.

The characters are... unlikeable, not even the MC is likeable, outside of the obvious blank spaces that are left for you to make a self insert in the story, her traits are "oblivious, strong" that's it.

The dialog is... frustrating, IE. someone says in front of her "that idiot prince should have told you something"... more>> instead of thinking "what are you talking about?" she goes "you shouldn't call a prince an idiot"... this doesn't happen once, or twice, happens 3 times every chapter.

The circumstances are so badly portrayed that you're left with a bad taste on your mouth, I don't find any of this funny or entertaining, I find all of this obnoxious, when you're overly tired of the repeated attempts at humor, the action scenes appear to try to breathe a bit of life into the story, but they are also boring, she does something OP... as in "bad guys appear she defeats them all" in two paragraphs, so forget about action.

The tone is inconsistent and dreadfully shattered here and there, the characters are unrelatable outside of the MC because they are just monikers to react or complain about what is happening between the MC and whoever is the subject in the moment.

Let me point out ONE thing to realize you're reading a novel like this, who is the most memorable character? is it the friend of the MC? well... what do ya know, she's the only one given character and emotion because the MC haves none... that's a staple of bad Japanese writing. <<less

Note : the story hasn’t been updated since 2019/10 and it’s Not finished or soon to be)

if you ever played game. where you distribute un number of point to define a character, you can understand this story has being made with all points are distributed in only two characteristics : pretty and strong - so basically, every single character is simply dumb or dumber !

there's no depth, not story, no character development or even personality, just a strange range of quasi obsessions - the only characters that are about... more>> « normal « are mostly female of the MC family and maybe a few royal that is enough to make them « smarter » than the average

the MC is he object of any the obsession of many many characters but is oblivious to it, and no ML seem to have appeared or have the potential to attract her - so the story goes from trouble encounters to strange ones, without an aim.

from a single line in the beginning you could dreadfully guess she already met her special person, and it might even be, the absolute idiot prince of the beginning, but nothing redeems him so far, which makes this option unpleasant- so the story stopped and maybe it’s not too bad it did, because it could only end with something ridiculous and a bunch of heart broken side kicks... not so great <<less

Haa... It's gotten to a point where their female characters have more life in them than the male love interests.

I don't mind detached or strong MC, she might be dense but also the people around her do not tell it to her straight either. All this roundabout ring around the rosie avoiding the main issue and thus misunderstandings occur because some people can't seem to communicate in simple, straightforward terms.

Look, a female protagonist can be strong and smart but I'm starting to think it's because the author made everyone else... more>> around her dumb and incompetent. And the whole, repeatedly reminding her she's a girl and should step back and be a lamp post while they take care of things she is clearly skillful at makes me want to throw tables. CHRIST. I'm pretty sure she knows herself that she is a woman!

Spoiler

It did get a snort out of me when the Duke rebelled because who wants a King like the current Prince? Well I don't exactly blame him. From what I've read thus far, the prince is probably the most disappointing one out of them all. I wouldn't want to be in a country where he's in charge either.

At the end of this whole "pretend revolt" farce, I feel like I'm watching a high school play so, that's it for me. Thanks to the translators for their effort but I can't bring myself to continue...... m (_ _) m
