Life is unpredictable. Her husband loved her stepsister, deposed her as Empress and even forced her son to death. In that Cold Palace, she was forced to drink poisonous wine. So in the next lifetime, she made a promise to never do good deeds and help others, to never step into the palace and to never become the Empress!

At the Prime Minister’s estate, the mistress’ daughter is reborn into a she-devil.

An evil stepmother? I will make sure you go to Hell!

A two-faced, hypocritical older stepsister? I will rip apart that beautiful façade!

A scheming younger stepsister? I will throw you into the grave!

You guys didn’t let me live peacefully so you should also expect the same!

Initially she wanted to stay away from disaster as far as possible; however, a man’s heart is like a needle in the sea—impossible to search for, impossible to understand.

The man who once swore to abandon her became someone who can’t live without her.

The enemy from the past lifetime suddenly confesses his feelings for her.

Even worse, she is bothered by a handsome man with a thick-skin who doesn’t know how to give up!

This family matters is a lot dragging. But I cant say its annoying. Infact I would want it to drag more. I mean she gains one after another for these schemes.

A girl born of a low mother, a concubines daughter and an unfavored one at that! I disagree that she could just make one great swoop and cut all of these family matters. Shes basically struggling to take down one let alone all of them at once. She just doesnt have the ability and the right people to do that.

Their... more>> destruction is not even caused by her hands solely but she uses that same knife that they're about to stab at her to stab back at them. <<less

I didn't find any of the characters likeable, except maybe the 7th Prince, but we don't know very much about him at the time I stopped reading. The plot is just schemes on schemes, mostly within the house, and they got old quite quickly. It feels like the plot hasn't progressed anywhere and she has no one that she's close to (apart from Min De, but their relationship isn't particularly interesting to me and is in fact frustrating) and so she just has... people she uses and people she abuses.... more>> I actually want her to lose something because she always comes out on top, and so there's no tension to any of the schemes and they're not good enough to be interesting in and of themselves. <<less

(Edited on 8/21/2020 to change some parts into a spoiler, and added extra comment) I've been MTLing the rest of the chapters (I can read some Chinese, but my ability is low) . The story is very similar to The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage. (8/21/2020) FYI, there is a lot of comparison between the two stories because Wei Yang was in a controversy as a plagiarized work. It has been confirmed that the author plagiarized over 200 works in just this one story. This... more>> review will be unfair, since it regards how a reader feels about plagiarized works. However, if you choose to read this story, both share similar premise. These ideas are not particularly new in novels, but it was hard not to draw a parallel. If you are wondering about the similarities, this list may give you some ideas. I'm not going to go into full detail to explain all the similarities. The list has been made a spoiler, so you can make your own judgment after reading both stories if you do decide to read both, or if you are a new reader and do not want the storyline spoiled. While I do think Wei Yang share a lot of the same concept, the story is told differently, and does have its moment. While I don't agree with plagiarism, I'd have to admit that it's impressive the author was able to copy 200 works and made this popular enough for a drama. The fact we have the internet now, you'd think it shouldn't have lasted long enough for a drama to exist. (end edit)
Similarities:

Spoiler

1. Rebirth stories

2. Revenge stories

3. Empresses who were wronged by their husband

4. Husbands were princes with similar characteristics on how to plan for the throne

5. MCs were never the husband's choice for marriage

6. Have sisters who take their husband (in Malicious Empress, it was her cousins AKA "clan" sisters, by clan sisters, I mean cousins who share the same last name. This is also considered "real" siblings in Chinese)

7. Have relatives who try to ruin them

8. ML having similar backgrounds (status and life story), and being extremely handsome.

9. MC leaves her home country, and builds a new life in another country

10. (8/21/2020) Previous husbands may not have past life's memory, but they have some sort of impression of MC that is tied to past life.

11. Someone has a dream of previous life. In one story, it is the protagonist, and for the other is an antagonist. The dream has some tie from previous life to explain character actions/personality that relate to the present timeline.

Mainly arc 1 shared similarities with Malicious Empress. Arc 2 wasn't as similar. (end edit)

[collapse]

The overall plotting by Wei Yang wasn't executed as well as Malicious Empress, as there were a lot of flaws in her plots. Interestingly, the author even made a character point out that Wei Yang's plots are just framing someone, and it's not an ideal characteristic. I love how this was mentioned in the story itself.

I will say, I enjoy revenge stories, so it didn't bother me much on the flaws as long as the revenge outcome turned out great. The outcome of the revenge, for the most part, felt more satisfying than Malicious Empress. However, her need for revenge felt rather weak.

In Wei Yang, her past life wasn't mentioned in too much detail, so it often lacked some kind of impact when it did. Most of the time, it sounded like her husband just didn't love her back, and it caused her pain when he wanted her dead. Most of her flashbacks of them were fairly good memories. As he treated her kindly, and was perfunctory in his actions. He wasn't rude to her, nor did he abuse her. Her children were barely mentioned, even though in the beginning she felt wronged for her children. It couldn't induce any emotions for me as to why she is so determined to seek revenge. I felt she was just heartbroken, and was a petty person.

(8/21/2020) Someone said she was a pitiful child, and she had been wronged since birth. Yes, she was wronged, and it was unfair, and her actions was justifiable. I feel sorry for Wei Yang, and I understand she needed to change to survive. I guess how I commented this confused people. My point is on how the story is told and how it made me feel. I did say "Most of the time, it sounded like her husband just didn't love her back, and it caused her pain when he wanted her dead." and "It couldn't induce any emotions for me as to why she is so determined to seek revenge." This made her seem petty in my eyes rather than justifiable (she has justifiable reasons, just it lacked that emotion for me). Details kept getting added to give us perspective on her past to make us understand where she is coming from, but it wasn't brought up in a way or enough that made me feel like it truly bothered her that much. Just like her children were mentioned in the beginning, but as we read further, it has become like they never existed. It got to a point I forgot she was ever a mother. You only remember she had a husband and did what she could to make him happy. She learned to play an instrument he likes, let him sleep with women he's interested in, and even accepted concubines. She was a perfect wife in every sense in that era, but still wasn't favored/loved to a point to allow her to live out her life. Also, sadly, if you think about it, because she lacked love all her life, so she tried hard to earn his favor to gain something she never had, and ultimately failed. She was desperate. She was a scorned woman seeking revenge against those who scorned her. This is mainly why I have said, "I felt she was just heartbroken, and was a petty person." While her main focus wasn't just on taking out the ex-husband, you mainly only remember the experiences in which he was not worthy of her, because much of the past that is spoken is towards him. The ideas were good, the writing style is fine, but it lacked something. Wei Yang's past life lacked impact to me to induce strong emotions for the need to get revenge--- as mentioned, the author has admitted to plagiarism, and this might explain why I couldn't feel strong emotions for Wei Yang's revenge. The author took the ideas of 200 author's works and placed it into one. One can take ideas and concept as an influence, and can adapt it in their own way to make it great, but done incorrectly, may still result in an interesting story, but lack emotional impact. Wei Yang's story had copied plot ideas and similar wording to other works-- which is probably why I forget she was a mother, she had real grievances, she was truly pitiful from the moment she was born.

The story also went downhill for me with the second arc. It wasn't important to Wei Yang's overall revenge, however, I understand the need for it. It was a storyline needed for Wei Yang to get together with the ML, who has an unusual background. <<less

If you like vengeful, smart, and charismatic characteristics with a tight plot, I would definitely recommend this. The middle kind of lagged/dragged but otherwise I really enjoyed how creative WY was. There was even a drama version which I would NOT recommend. It was one of the worst and I don't say this lightly. Practically no similarity at all to the book.

She swtas flies but they just keep coming back! They die? No problems, just send another one again! Like omfg I'm so freaking tired of this s*upid roller coaster! One of the guy (prince) is such a masochist and the other a spineless amoeba. Like c'mon! Don't even know why she wastes time swatting flies and... more>> just doesn't get it over with or move out! Or do something substantial!

As of the latest chap she still swatting flies with s*upid pig teammates and the only good decent intelligent ppl r her freaking maids and liminde! And with only 292 chapters, I don't know how the author is going to wrap up this story but good luck cuz so far it's a snooze fest. I definitely do not recommend reading this idiotic story. <<less

horrific, Wei young is crazy, the torture she put her enemies through is way too much. I couldn't stomach it. I know she suffered a lot and her ennemies are conveniently absolute scumbag with no ounce of good in them (complete one dimensional characters) but still, she's supposed to be the female lead, the good one. Killing them is okay, torturing them to this extend... no

Spoiler

in the latest chapters she cut the Jiang general's foot in half and made him walk barefoot on needles on his wounds... author are you okay?

[collapse]

I heard there were worse torture in the later half, but I already can't stomach this so I'm stopping the novel. Also the pacing is slow and the very slow translation is not helping (still thanks to the translators). There's some ridiculous plot and sometimes I fail to understand how she could have win given her initial background and the numerous social rules (like how she beat the sh*t out of her legal step mom when the later asked her to serve her as filial piety. Wei young excused herself saying she was clumsy... this was so s*upid no way it could have worked irl...)

Also I hated how the villains always came back whatever big plot Wei young schemed against them... especially the sister. This was so annoying how she always survived filled with more hate. I see what WY tried to do; she was killing her sis very slowly and painfully, it was her vengeance, but as a reader I felt that this vengeance was against me cause I had to read all these annoying chapters lmao

Another problem I have is ML... Wei young made it clear she will not be with a guy who will try to manipulate her or force her to do anything... Yet ML is on the good path to become a yandere at this point. Honestly it's not fair for the others suitors of WY cause Li minde is only the ML because the author wanted to...I don't find him different from others apart that he was willing to let go of the throne for WY (other than that, pure manipulator)

Anyway my big problem with this novel is the cruelty of the characters, the rest is good or passable, but I heard the author plagiarized so I only put one star

Phew it took me 6 days to end the novel. I MTLed the untranslated chapters trough the website quanben. io and it was really easy to read aside from the he/she common issue with MTL and some pinyin characters that couldn’t be translated.

If you ignore the plagiarism polemic around the novel and judge it solely on its content I have to say that it’s definitely worth the read. TPW is on one hand similar to other novels of the same theme and on another hand different from those novels. Starting... more>> from the ML
Spoiler

Having grown up side by side with the FL and being under her guardianship, he had a borderline extreme reliance on her. Which allowed him to stay close to FL as he was presenting himself to be weak and someone who needed to be under FL’s wings (when in truth he wanted to be under her skirt fufufu (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) nah I’m kidding...). So little by little affection grew to the point he couldn’t bear to distance himself from her. She became an indispensable part of his life. When his own tragic life history is revealed it’s easier to understand why he’s so much emotionally reliant from FL. From the revelation began his shameless pursuit of FL. At first she stubbornly rejected him because FL has only revenge in her mind and because of her past life love isn’t something she could long for. Still he succeeded in softening her heart and accepting him (while not being forceful).

[collapse]

The antagonists also have some differences, in the fact that they’re not one dimensional and only resorts to petty tricks. It’s a battle of wits troughout the novel between the FL and her opponents. There are a lot of ingenuity in the antagonists means as every schemes are toughtfully designed and can only make you marvel. The more you read the more you’ll find that this novel is extremely dark. Especially the second part of the novel. A lot of villain’s endings are particularly gruesome. In terms pf torture or ruthlessness you can’t find a better protagonist than Li Wei Yang (at least in my opinion there are a lot of methods of torture used in this novel that I’ve only read there and a lot were inspired from historical facts). Still she has a clear distinction between right and wrong she’ll be extremely ruthless to those who’ll provoke her first and she’ll ‘punish’ them in accordance of their wrong.

Wether it’s the plot, the protagonists or even the antagonists they are all top notch (I’m speaking of the final boss not her stepmother or stepsisters) so you should definitely read this novel.

Also, thanks to the translators for keeping translating this novel ! Thanks for having the gall to translate those frigging lenghty chapters (never seen chapters that long my gad... after MTLing I understood why the translated chapters were divided in two parts). <<less

I really love this novel, but then I have been reading this for forever now, so I had to give it a 4. Though the story is really good, the translation is really slow, and damn never would I have wished that I could read and understand chinese more than ever. Since I love rebirth stories, I really got hooked in this novel, the mc's character is just too cool not like other mcs, and I like how mature and smart she is, and is always a step ahead of... more>> her enemies. If you like rebirth stories, then you could give this a try, though the romance in this novel is not that high, the tid bits of fluffy moments will satisfy you. <<less

Reading this was a test of patience, not because the story s**ked but the translation is all over the place. More pinyin terms every chapter that can even rival the Chinese to English Dictionary. It really detracts from the story, I mean I can keep track of names but then they change how they address anyone from names like Gary to ching to chong in a single chapter. Gary can be called in five different names in a single chapter and the translator doesn't even bother being coherent with it.

Translator... more>> has a glossary every chapter but why? Why not just translate it properly? It even has some parts where the pinyin is right next to a literal translation, is this all according to keikaku (plan) ?

The story is okay, its a standard fair of drama and revenge story with a very thick plot armor. All conflict is very one-sided her only struggle is before she died. Everything is quite cheap, the author is telling you who to hate and who to like. The schemes are you could say standard and not really mind blowing and creative its just okay.

Overall if not for the half-assed translation the story might have been more tolerable. <<less

I kept reading to the end mostly because the writing was good. There is enough mystery and scheming to keep you interested in the story even though the revenge pattern got a bit repetitive.

However, the story got progressively more cruel and was completely overboard sometimes. There was poor justification for some of the gruesome tortures and methods the protagonist used. Often, random bystanders or family members of the revenge targets were indirectly dragged in and killed.

Spoiler

Particularly that cannibalism drug incident. The poor guy got a worse ending than her ex-husband?! Some defeated opponents were treated inhumanely in an unnecessary sadistic manner before being killed. There were few sane/likeable characters that actually survived aside from her new family.

[collapse]

You can forget about any romance, it is negligible until the outside chapers at the end. The ML blindly justifies everything she does and is quite cruel himself. Some characters were obsessed with her in a mary-sue way even though she was a complete psychopath... To be fair most of the other characters were also mental. <<less

First few chapters are kind of boring to me. But as the story keeps going, it getting more and more interesting!

So if you're a fan of ancient time reincarnate/revenge novel's fan, i'd totally recommend this. Especially if you're not into gore/brutal story. (Although the first chap which tell us her situation before she died is, well, really graphic. But it's still okay for me who have a really soft heart, lol.

A fairly standard time rewind into an early version of herself.

The situations and changes to the time line are a bit forced (especially the case of her being called back significantly earlier than previously), but not to a level where you would regard it as completely forceful. The main character displays an intellect that could be expected from someone past 30, that spent 8 years in the troubled waters that are royal courts, as well as 12 years in solitude with hatred as a companion.

It's definitely not perfect, and most... more>> of the characters are very flat, including the leading actress, but so far there is less random killing that you find in the reincarnation novels of this style (well, it's not reincarnation here, but close enough), and a bit more emphasis on plotting. A fairly complex high nobility family that tries to back stab each others, instead of the usual "whole family mostly united in bullying the main character", also helps to make it more interesting.

You will quickly see that there is not a single good person in that family, which adds to the tension and leaves a lot of openings to the author on how to advance further.

So far, there is not even a hint of romance, but the "prince" is shown to act a bit oddly in the very brief time we saw him, so we can expect that there will be the usual regrets for not seeing the value of the main character, because at this point it became a trope of those novels (for better or worse, those guys are shown to have a propensity to betray whenever they can get benefits from it).

The writing is nice, the translation seems to be good too, so it does add to it, but be aware that there will be a lot of Chinese terms for the relationship, because translating those makes it lose most of its meaning in English, as the subtle differences are nearly impossible to transcribe into normal English without making very long sentences every time.

I personally enjoyed reading those chapters, and I am hopping that we will get a more regular update schedule, but I'll say that what there is for now is enough to get a feel for the story's tone, context and characters, and there is enough content to enjoy it for a bit.

TL;DR: A bit less blood-stained than the usual novels of this style, more emphasis in plotting and hidden meanings in the words.
Pretty decent so far, hopefully it will keep up as it progresses. <<less

I really liked this story. The Princess Wei Yang was the second c-novel that I have ever read, and it was recommended to me after I read The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage.

Many people think that The Princess Wei Yang is similar to TRotMEoML, and well, yes they are. They are both revenge stories of an empress. After both protagonists are killed by their husbands, the emperor, who they had sacrificed everything for, they are reborn as a younger version of themselves and get a chance to... more>> do it again. They both have vicious families (well, for the most part), that try to kill them at every turn. Throughout the story, the protagonists scheme and return what their enemies had in store for them, and seeing them do it is incredibly satisfying.

However, even though these two stories are very similar in plot, they have very big differences as well!

The Princess Wei Yang:

    • Protagonist is Li Wei Yang. She married the 3rd prince Tuoba Zhen in place of her sister Li Chang Le in her past life, since her family never thought Tuoba Zhen would have a chance to become emperor.
    • Shu daughter: she is the daughter of the concubine Qi Yiniang and her father Li Xiao Ran.
        • THIS AFFECTS THE STORY A LOT! She doesn't get a lot of privileges as a concubines daughter, so everyone looks down on her.
    • Grew up in the Countryside.
    • She does not get any love from her father, and her mother does not play the biggest part in her life, or as much as Shen Miao's mother does in Shen Miao's life.
    • Kind of like a Reverse Harem, but it is not like it at the same time. There are 2 love interests, and actually 4 if you account for the "other" ones who are definitely NOT worthy of her.
      Spoiler

The 2 main ML's are Tuoba Yu, the seventh Prince, and Li Min De (her adopted cousin, who isn't actually her cousin), and the other 2 are Tuoba Zhen, the 3rd Prince who ends up chasing after Li Wei Yang after he notices how clever she is, and because she hates him (idk maybe he has a thing for those types), and Jiang Nan, who is the fourth son of the Jiang family and is also kind of irrelevant lol. As for which one of those 4 is the ML, it's Li Min De (spoiler alert: He's not actually younger than her)

      [collapse]
    • Her husband in her previous life actively chases her.
    • Her scheming is more light (I guess, but at the same time, they both scheme to eventually kill) than Shen Miao's. Shen Miao aims to kill first thing, while Li Wei Yang is a little lighter on them and pays the damage back slower (this can come off a little bit repetitive, but it's still satisfying!). As of chapter 116 (where I am in the novel), Li Chang Le (Li Wei Yang's sister that eventually became empress after Wei Yang died in her past life) is still not dead, while in TRotMEoML, Shen Miao eliminates a large part of the household sooner.
    • Unexpected ML. Can't wait to see how this will turn out! We got to see how he grew a lot as a kid more than we got to see the ML of TRotMEoML.
    • Her sister Li Chang Le is much prettier than her.
    • She does not have any big rank in the beginning, and as a concubines daughter, no one supports her. Even her own father doesn't support her compared to the love he has for Chang Le, so she has to rise up on her own.
    • She helps one of the princes to eventually crush Tuoba Zhen.
    • She DOES NOT want to become empress again, and only wants revenge against everyone who wronged her.
The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage:

    • Protagonist is Shen Miao. She married the ninth Prince Fu Xiu Yi (I think that's his name?) not out of necessity but because of one sided love she felt towards him in her past life.
    • Di Daughter: She is the daughter of the main wife (and one and only wife in this case) and her father.
        • She gets much more privileges than Li Wei Yang. Everyone looked down on her because she was an idiot in her past life, not because she was a concubines daughter like Wei Yang.
    • Grew up in the Capital.
    • Her immediate family (the first household) cares deeply for Shen Miao, and loves her.
    • Only one main ML (which should be obvious who it is when you read the story)
      Spoiler

The Little Marquis Xie Jing Xing is the ML

      [collapse]
    • Her husband in her previous life does not actually chase her.
    • Her scheming is meant to kill first thing.
    • Slow burn between the ML and Shen Miao.
    • She is pretty compared to her two "sisters" (actually cousins).
    • She does not have any support in the beginning because her immediate family is away at war, so she stays with the rest of her family, who are absolutely horrible.
    • Does not help any of the princes to get revenge on Fu Xiu Yi.
    • She wants/intends to become empress again.
Both of them are great stories, but they both have their own perks! Li Wei Yang and Shen Miao are two different people, and both do things differently. One is a concubine's daughter and grew up in the country side, one isn't and grew up in the capital. Their schemes are completely different!

They both are insanely smart though and would do anything for their loved ones.

Read both of them! <<less

Honestly, I only discovered this romance through the c-drama Princess Wei Young. I have to admit, I am happy to watch the drama before reading it, because I would be very disappointed in the drama. I love the novel so far because it shows her a lot more, her past, how to plan her revenge, how she does it and the emotions the author gives her. It really makes you feel for her, you just hate her ex-husband. The story is intriguing and attracts you. I would like to thank... more>> Jasmine for translating the novel, I thank you for the excellent translation. Please don't stop, I'm very anxious for the end. <<less

Typical reincarnation revenge novel, not the best of its genre but not bad by any means. The face slaps are satisfying, the execution of the revenges are and viscious. An issue I have with the novel is that there are way too many cannon-fodder villains and the way Wei Yang deals with the schemes aimed at here. Villains scheme something on the spot > Wei Yang finds out about it one way or another (because protagonists always have better intelligence networks right?) within the next 2 or 3 chapters >... more>> uses their plan and turns it all back on them. It gets kinda dull after a while.

A second issue I have is not reflected in the score I gave to this novel. It is the slow translation speed. If this translation pace persists, it will take more than 12 years till the day it's fully translated. I do hope my interest in this novel does not wane until then. <<less
