In their last life, they met each other in their later years, he had suffered through the ups and downs in life, and she was scarred. They warmed and healed each other in their remaining years.

In this life, she decided to give this man a good beginning, help him avoid the hidden arrows, and walk onto the bright road!

However… who could tell her why her steady, refined husband is actually such a cold, fierce, and th**ny bully as a young man?

The rough man impatiently pressed the Bai Fumei into the cornfield, patted her tender face, and said fiercely: “You know, you can’t run away if you mess with me again.”

The novel is a different setting to what I'm used to because it is in the 1970s China, but the story itself is very sweet and cute.

The story is about an old woman who reborn to her younger self, and her journey to chase her old husband back. In their previous life, they met when they were old and after they were both hurt in their own separate lives.

She can't forget how he looked after her in their previous life and how he made her so happy. So after she... more>> is reborn, she helps him to avoid all the hardships, be rich, and spend more happy time with her "old man".

In the beginning, it was hard for her because he avoided all her good intention. As a logical person, he understandably cannot accept a city Bai Fumei who is suddenly chasing him, a poor boy from a landlord family (landlords are frown upon in 1970s China, and after Cultural Revolution, they lost all their properties.)

But slowly he accepts her and they support each other through life (s).

There isn't really any face-slapping or even any real antagonist.
Spoiler

Except for one particular rapist that roams the village.

[collapse]

About the scum ex-husband:

Spoiler

I find the ex-husband is very pitiful. He was too overbearing, sure. But his behavior will be considered a standard ML behavior in a different novel. In this novel, he is just not the ML so he didn't get the girl. Poor guy.

[collapse]

I love all the extra info about life in communist China. It's definitely eye-opening for me.

EDITED:

When I read it the first time around, I didn't understand why she had to leave him. I thought it was just a cliche plot twist to make readers suffer. After coming back to it again, I think I understand a bit. In her first life, FL gave her youth to her ex-husband, then in this life, she gave 2 years of her youth to ML.

Other then also leaving a space for ML to grow (cruelly) and giving a second look on the ex (still won't work), she also has to give a chance to herself. To use her youth for HERSELF. Which I now feel is probably important for her to make the final decision about her relationship with ML. Is this love or just gratitude? <<less

The relationship between ML and FL is very sweet. ML is sensible. They listen to each other. Don't have s*upid misunderstandings. None of their family members are toxic.

Her ex husband was a scum, he was not pitful at all.

In her previous life

Spoiler

he didn't love her for 18 years of their marriage.

As they lived in military camp and due to jiang (ex husband) not not showing least amount of affection for her she had a very sad life.

He even neglected bring nutrition for her when she asked for it during her first pregnancy as she was suffering from lack of nutrition due to taking care of him and herself (and her unborn child) simultaneously.

When their second child miscarried (because FL saw pic of jiang and girl with whom he slept with while drunk. Due to this she had early labour and she had go to hospital alone but she fainted on the road. Her life was saved cause ML arrived but her child died) she got depressed.

jiang was injured when she had gone into early labour, when he went to hospital his first word were "why are making trouble, letting the whole family look for you early in the morning?".

After seeing FL in depression he finaly tried to improve their relation. He tried to cook for her but ended up suggesting thing she hated (after 18 years he didn't know the only thing she couldn't eat). He tried to do other things but FL was too hurt to care.

Jiang hid the report that said FL couldn't have baby anymore from everyone (she didn't know this) . But during a visit his family (who were not good to fl) found the report and accused FL of hiding the fact.

FL had enough after few months of struggle was able to divorce him.

[collapse]

Even in second life he caused trouble for Fl

Spoiler

he too was reborn. He threatened too cause trouble for then powerless ML if FL didn't leave Ml. This seprated FL and ML for 3 or 4 years.

This is great! Both MC & ML are very strong and can endure hardships. It was very slice-of-life. As the author mentioned, this isn't really a book about face-slapping or getting rich during the 70s. It is about the story of a rich woman who picks up a poor boy from the abyss and gives him hope through love and care. I really enjoyed it.

There's no real main antagonist per se. The book doesn't revolve around one. There are one or two rotten people, but there's no extended drama. Things... more>> get resolved quickly. It's nice and mellow.

This is not exactly spoilery. It's explained pretty early on that MC had an ex husband with two miscarriages and a bad divorce. About the ex, he sure is pitiful but I don't think he deserves forgiveness. He made too many mistakes for the MC's love to endure. He personally stifled all the love she had for him so I believe he doesn't have the right to demand more from her. It's because of how he grew up in a cold environment and he doesn't know how to communicate with women so his personal life was turned into a mess by a disgusting mother and a rotten peach blossom. The MC suffered because of them. He personally didn't wrong her. He was indifferent, had a cold heart, was a negligent husband and father but he has to take responsibility for the death of his children. He never really said sorry properly. He vaguely said he was wrong, didn't explain his situation about the other woman, didn't explain complications... in short, didn't respect her as a person. Maybe it's because of the times, his education, or his pride, he just didn't talk to her about his problems and shortcomings. He realized too late that he loved her. He took her for granted and when she wanted to leave, he used force and threats. He even said she was cruel. He's like a selfish child. That's not just 'overbearing protagonist' behavior. He is pitiful. Sure. Not a scum, I can agree (since he didn't cheat on MC). But it was too late for him to regret. Forcing MC to stay with him would only make her hate him. He was just an ignorant idiot with low EQ. I felt like he was autistic even with how stuck up he was with her. He was a talented man, good at his work but his personal life was just a mess because he can't communicate.

Erm, I really liked the book but I realized I have too much to say about the ex? Hahaha. Idk why, I cried a lot when I read about their past. He was too complicated of a man. It wasn't entirely his fault and by no means MC's fault. But their love became so bitter and had to end. I wish, at the end, since he loved her, he had learned to let go and wish her peace instead of becoming yandere. <<less

I don't know why I fell in love with this book so quickly. I blame it on the fact that I was listening to Sagriswell while reading it. But this book is just left me with a really satisfying feeling. I recommend it to anyone who liked reading "My Husband Has Scholar Syndrome" or "Reborn at the Doors of the Civil Affairs Bureau".
Spoiler

The ending was beautiful, and I felt like everything came around to a full circle. It was revealed that in her original life He Songbai was the one who time-traveled instead of her. This was why he chased her so hard for 3 years. He had memories of living a life with her in the world where she time traveled. The thing with how he loved Gardenias in the first timeline because she loved it in the second timeline, while she only liked it in the second timeline because he liked it in the first timeline just showed how connected they are. I felt like they were both destined to save one another from their respective hardships. He time-traveled to give her a better life and happiness. While she time-traveled to give him a good life in his early years.

[collapse]

This book left me wanting more, even though I know the ending wrapped it up nicely. Still need some time to get over it though.

Humble, sincere and heart warming.

-

There are many times I teared up on how real their feelings for their each other are and often on how caring they are for their family.

Both protagonist are also mature in their thinking with no unnecessary misunderstandings but just to work hard towards their goals and dreams. ;V;

I just wished novel is longer.

FRIENDLY TIP: Don’t read when you’re hungry.

I loved it! This is such a unique time period to read about, that I couldn't help but be enthralled. The struggle was real, and I enjoy reading the slice of life of working in such an era. The characters are so enduring to give the very best to each other, that you can't help but wish the best for them. :) The only thing I disliked was:

Spoiler

The MC's ex-husband. I do not understand why the author allowed him to time travel back in time if, in the end, he couldn't change anything (was it just to make him suffer more?). I don't forgive his actions, but I do pity him because of that. Why give him hope to rectify his mistakes but in the end couldn't? It added unnecessary drama especially because it forced MC to be apart from ML for 4 years.

Overall, I'll rate this novel a 4.5, but rounded up to a 5! ^3^

This is one of the most enduring love stories I have ever read. Both MC and ML are hard working and they persevere through all of life's difficulties together. My mother grew up in the same time period as this and when I recounted to her the historical details written here, she said it was pretty accurate. Pretty sure the author is around my age with a family member who has gone through this time period to know these details. The love here is real and precious. Every character is... more>> fleshed out and nuanced with their own stories. It's not too difficult to MTL but some people's names might not translate as names so watch out for that.

If you are looking for a story that will move your heart strings and make you feel alive, read this. You won't regret it. It's hands down one of the best Chinese romance novels I've ever had the honour of reading. MC inspires me so much. She overcomes life's obstacles with her inner strength and love. I feel full of admiration for her. Please read this story if you are looking for something that will make you introspect about life and love.

Not your typical time reversal. What's more there's no messy s*upid soap opera plots. No cartoony villains either.

I love this novel so much! <<less

The best thing about this novel is that, the struggle is real. Most of the stories with back to XXXX stories, the FL ends up stealing all of the innovative ideas from her time and using it liberally to quickly get rich, so as a reader I feel like the female lead is getting c*cky shamelessly and looking down on reader’s IQ. But in this story, though we know her husband would be rich from the get go, the FL wants to use her rebirth to meet with her hubby... more>> and help him avoid a catastrophe. In the process we read a beautiful love story between people who are from different social status and cheer them on as they overcome all obstacles on their path. <<less

Amazing story, absolutely one of my all time favorites. I MTLed the rest past chapter 80 and it wasn't bad but am still going back to reread the chapters that are being released by human translation because the story was just that good.

Our FL was so devoted to the ML throughout the entire novel, and it was touching to see our ML overcome his inferiority complex, take control of his own fate and let himself fall in love with the FL. There's no cheats or magical spaces, and the extent... more>> to which FL uses her knowledge of the future is actually rather limited. Everything she accomplishes and does for the ML is the product of her own hard work.

Spoiler

I'm not the biggest fan of how the novel ended, with the husband from the previous life causing our FL and ML to be separated for a few years, but it was still a happy ending when they reunited. I was also surprised by the extra chapter that showed the ML also reincarnating, but back into the previous life of the FL. It really made my head spin and I'm actually questioning whether or not that's what actually happened or if I got confused by machine translation.

I didn't like like the first 10 chapters

Spoiler

I know it was hard on people in the past and even now in poor places but the content with children maltreatment made me uncomfortable. The MC's behavior was a somewhat.. Creepy at the beginning

[collapse]

But as story goes on I became addicted to the novel. I think the readers who like Pure Realistic slice of life novels will also like it. In those 90 chapters the MC isn't mary sue, No face slapping (well.. There is few but they are natural not the excessive forced type), the personality of the ML is decent (sometimes annoying), the plot development is good and moves on naturally, other side characters are Ok but they get neglected by writer often.

I'm not stingy nor I'm a good critic, if a story is interesting and there is no overly annoying content (based on my preference) I basically give 5 stares. If the story still good till the end then this score won't change.

Edit:

I almost dropped down the novel after chapter 120.

Spoiler

I think I saw this scene where the FL leaves the ML to protect him and ask him not to look for her many times in some dramas and WNs before. It even became one of the cornerstones in the wuxia novels, later the ML has to go through many hardships and break through the heaven to be with her again (and increase his harm by the way) but here the author gave up after only one chapter. Although I'm thankful I don't have read this kind of "interesting" plot over and over again, what was the point of even adding it? I guess the story development at this point is more in line with female readers than the males? (At least I lack interest in the last 8 or 9 chapters I read, I just keep skipping forward)

Also the way the MC deals with males looks somewhat out of line with the era to me. I don't know much about the 70's in china but from the novels I read it doesn't look open to the point where a female can be talking naturally with strange males in the meddle of the night alone

Spoiler

Sometimes I can't help wonder that if Jianyun was ML, it would've been another cool ML reincarnation novel. I feel bad for him, but at the same time, look down on him. Definitely, add a layer of complexity to the novel.

[collapse]

The ending felt a bit rushed (not much substance), but I guess the main focus was on the years that the FL spent with the ML in the countryside. Would have been cool for more cityside drama or retaliation from the villain, but *shrug*.

I should say that I'm a sucker for Josei stories and this one has to be one of the best reincarnation plots I've read thus far.

The character's involvement of each others lives make a perfect circle as they manage to help each other out at the direst times of their lives.

The 70s backdrop is also a refreshing scene as it is different from the usual era of isekai/reincarnations. The story also gives poignant lessons on love, loss, filial piety, social injustices and discrimination as well as hope and unrelenting grit... more>> of the people that lived in that decade.

Actually, it made me feel grateful of the sacrifices that our predecessors did for the betterment of our today's society. Yes, there's still issues but compared to the bleakness of their lives before, we are indeed having it easier.

Started reading yesterday and was able to finish it today. It's a must read. It made me realize that fate is really fair. A second chance is worth every grain of rice in your table. Reading their story specially the remaining chapters, I saw and read a love that is realistic and inspirational. In the end I pity the ex-husband. The romance is the best. I'm so jealous of what the two of them have honestly. The only critique I have of this novel is that I still don't understand what happened to the ex-husband really?
Spoiler

like he was reborn too and blackmailed her with ML being put into prison if she didn't stay with him, but then suddenly a few years pass and ML comes to find her and they just managed to get together? Did he give up on her during that time knowing she'd never love him? He shows up at her wedding sort of but that's it. Idk I might just have accidentally skipped something.

[collapse]

Honestly I felt bad for him, but he hurt MC deeply and doesn't get to say 'I made a mistake and I did love you so get over it.' She is the one who decides to forgive or not and even if he explains every single one of his actions with the best excuses, she has the right to be hurt and the right to be angry. There's too much history between them for her to be happy with him and he needs to realize that. BTW, there's no face slapping at all- well, not really anyway though the villagers who originally look down on ML's family do later regret that they did sort of cuz he's rich later. This story really is just about the MC trying to make ML and his family's lives better so they can be together happily. She tries to earn some money to feed them, but mostly she just wants to help ML find a way to make money (because she knows he succeeds in the future but has a sort of inferiority complex in the present). Additionally, in og life, he went to jail and MC really wants to make sure that doesn't happen.

The main, serious drama besides the money issues and love is that in the previous life
Spoiler

ML went to jail and ml's older sister was r*ped late at night. This is all connected to the main antagonist. He's the apprentice of an engineer who was sent to the commune as a "prisoner" to work thanks to the betrayal of his apprentices. The mc/ML are kind to the engineer and he helps them too, but the apprentice doesn't want teacher to live well and is trying to frame him for embezzlement that he committed. Anyway he's a rapist too that assaulted the sister.

[collapse]

Anyway, I absolutely loved this novel. It's literally the sweetest relationship and I love how they get together somewhat slowly. MC is also an absolutely wonderful character and reading the extras gave me life. ML traveling to the first life to rescue mc? Literally the sweetest thing.

God dammit this story was so damn sweet it held me down and force fed me cookies and warm milk and then tucked me into bed at night. My teeth ache, I've obtained diabetes, I'm crying tears over how heartwarming they are. Rather than "girl gets reborn and chases her husband", it's more "girl get reborn and then charges towards her husband's side so they can weather the storms together". They're cute. They're so cute. Their romance is absolutely top notch, legitimately one of the best I've ever read. It's... more>> nice that she pursues him in a realistic way by giving him chances to interact with her, shows her interest in him and shooing away any competition. On the other hand, ML is a rough man but such an upstanding guy that tries his best to do her right, it makes your heart melt into goo. I really liked how even though this is a rebirth novel, it was still realistic (but optimistic) in which they faced set backs and how they both tried their best to help the family out of poverty.

If I had to list any dislikes about this novel, I do think the way they got together was a bit quick. It didn't bother me that it was so fast, I just think it wasn't a very smooth transition and felt a tad abrupt. The bigger dislike would ML's little sister Sanya. She's very cute (a little foodie!) and granted she is just a seven year old kid in the story, but literally the amount of dialogue she had can be counted on one hand and her presence through the story was really weak. Besides a few scene that she stars in, she's just mentioned in the background to be eating or waiting to eat and honestly is so forgettable that I literally forgot she was there halfway through the book. In the ending side-stories, she doesn't even appear at all. I really do like her, but I think it's a shame that she barely had any affect or role in the story.

Spoiler

I will say though that while it's easy to see MC's ex-husband as the antagonist, I honestly would say that while he did neglect and mistreated MC by accident, he's not a bad man. He's not abusive or a cheater and to be honest they both had a fault in their marriage breakdown; but since we follow MC more, we only see her side. Big thing is that they didn't communicate, he was focused on his career and grew up in a cold family, she just held hopes in her heart that he would change and enabled his cold behavior. Neither of them voiced their actual thoughts or opinions to each other, and by the time he tried his best to change she was tired and jaded. They just aren't meant for each other, please do not demonize him. I know a few people have said JJJ's little sister turned out fine so why didn't he but I'd like to point out that this is the 70's and a patriarchal society, men are held to higher but stricter and colder standards (like the typical "men don't cry").

On the other hand, Feng Ting only shows up twice but honestly she's the real enemy in MC's past life, that b*tch. There's also another person whose the real antagonist in this life but I won't spoil that.

[collapse]

Overall, this is probably one of the best sweet romance stories I've ever read. By far one of the most satisfying couples that made me shed tears over how sweet they are. Do be warned though, this story takes place in the 70's China, way different from how we are in modern society today. While reading, please remember you might not know exactly what the cultural nuances at the time are and keep an open mind. I also think that rather than having just MC as the protagonist, both MC and ML are the protagonists as the story covers both their sides. Other than that I highly, highly recommend this story, it's become one of my favorites! <<less

It's so beautiful that I cried (and still shedding tears as I write this). First of all, this isn't the first story with this type of setting (60's, 70's etc), but this is unique and is different than the rest. First, the previous stories with similar plots that I've read before has an FL who transmigrated back in time with either a system or usually an interdimensional space, making her a little unrealistic. But this story's FL, albeit reborn, isn't OP and she's more realistic. The ML, unlike from the... more>> previous stories I've read, isn't a military man/soldier. He's just a poor boy from a fallen landlord's household. His insecurities, inferiority complex, dreams and hope are very vivid and can reach the readers' emotions very well.

Regarding the probably second ML, I actually feel a little bit of mixed feelings because
Spoiler

he's not actually a 100% scumbag. He doesn't cheat on his own. He's not just good at expressing himself and ge prioritized his career more. Albeit, he looked indifferent, he actually cared about the FL and their supposed to be children. It just that, it's too late for his regrets. Anyway, though I kinda feel a little pity for him, it doesn't mean I'll choose him over He Songbai.

[collapse]

Also, I honestly don't know what happy ending is the best. Is it the one like this story where they grow old with each other and accompany each other until death, or the one where they'll get married and have children then the end. I mean, both are good. Though the latter can make me crave for more extra chapters about their life after the main story ends, the former can also make me cry and be a little emotional just like now.

Anyway, it's 100/10 for me. The plot is unique, the characters are deep and realistic, the lessons to be learned are there, the world background/setting is vivid which made me, someone who's not from China, be more familiar about their history, and lastly, the story is very touching. <<less

i feel so bad for jiang jianjun im going to be sick don't read the extra about the past life if you have even one ounce of pity for the 2nd ML it will rip you apart. I mean yes he's at fault for taking zlx for granted and never communicating and letting outsiders backstab his wife and being too immature etc... but its just so sad.

if this was a different kind of story they wouldve reconciled (bc he would have redeemed himself...). instead jjj never communicates and is blind to zlx's needs and sadness and doesnt know how to fix things. very clearly a product of his childhood environment. he made his mistakes and now he has to pay for them...

he shouldve let her go in their reborn life and let her live happily, but the author didnt want to write that plot. I feel bad for jjj being used as a plot device! I pity him!! I pity him sitting in that military car outside zxl and hsb's extravagant and joyful wedding, alone in the dark and restraining himself from ruining their happy moment, thinking about what could've been if only he wasn't so blind. you s*upid man. imagine how happy he was when he found out he could have a second chance, a chance at redemption, a chance to set things right and give zxl the happy married life she wanted originally! and then s*upidly he decided to threaten zxl and hsb... ok I get that youre angry at hsb for what he did in your first life but can you live and let live, jjj? he's so f*cking s*upid in the first place to never clear up the situation between fang ming and him to zxl. I want to shake him upside down until he somehow gains his missing EQ.

the author is so cruel for making him a 3-dimensional character. it's hard to hate him and easy to pity him. the timing is just all wrong; they weren't meant to be. ironically, in the end notes, the author writes: "Jiang Jianjun: I hope you can all meet the right people." jiang jianjun, I hope you meet the right person too.

if this was a different novel he couldve been happy but alas. I guess all this is to just mourn his fate as the 2nd ML doomed to cause conflict. author thank you for writing a very sweet slice of life romance but also I will send you knives for hiding this sad, pitiful man in what couldve simply been a sweet heartwarming novel. my weakness is pathetic men.

ok I cant even be too mad at the author because he songbai is just. isnt he the perfect man??? the author is playing with my heart like a violin it's so damn sweet that he's just watching over zxl and protecting her quietly and paving her path before giving her such a perfect and eternal love that when she's reborn she runs straight to his side and repays the love and grants happiness to him, seriously. forgetting jjj this is the sweetest and most enduring love story? can we talk about how gentle and caring hsb is in zxl's first life?? no wonder this kind of f*cking fairy love sent her to the past with such brave and enthusiastic adoration. thinking about how zxl never knew that hsb in her first life was reborn. I'm emotional.

i won't talk about my issues with some details of the story itself or characterizations or overall plot. to me this is what I expected it to be: slice of life romance set in the 70s. honestly speaking story wise its probably a strong 3.5/5 for me but since im currently a little emotional i'll rate it 4/5

tldr rip jiang jianjun & wishing zxl and hsb a thousand years of happiness. if youre looking for a sweet, no frills no thought slice of life romance youve found it. if youre looking for the most pitiable 2nd ML ever youve also found him. yes he hurt zxl a lot and made many mistakes; even so, I hope he finds his peace somewhere just as zxl found hers. <<less
