The hearse with the weird odor slowed to a stop before the entrance. The sound of pebbles could be heard bouncing on the ceiling. There were footsteps coming from the corridor, and there seemed to be someone sawing next door. The door knob to the room rattled slightly, and the faucet in the bathroom kept dripping even though it had been screwed shut. There was a rubber ball that rolled on its own underneath the bed. Wet footsteps started to surface one after another on the floor.

At 3 am, Chen Ge held a cleaver in his hand as he hid beside the room heater. The call he was trying to make was finally answered. “Landlord, is this what you meant by ‘the house can be a little crowded at night’‽”

MC has a special place in my heart. The plot is nothing to write home about but be real we're reading a horror novel for the scares and MHOH did it perfectly. It will cure your fear of ghosts by the time you finished it.

The horror is executed well with not much repeated gimmicks but new and creative ones. It also doesn't rely on shock factors or gore to disgust the reader.

Minor spoilers

Spoiler

The part where he went blind in an apartment is top tier horror.

[collapse]

The description of each scene is very well written. Many MC went through worse fates but the author can make the audience feel the terror of being the MC in this situation.

Some parts of this novel is so thrilling that it burned into my eyeballs. If we're talking pure horror factor, to me this is 10/10 with nothing that surpassed it in novel format. <<less

"If there's something strange... who you gonna call?"

And so goes one of the most unique spins of the "system-leveling" Chinese genre, the addition of a modern horror theme. HIGHLY recommended for all the horror/adrenaline junkies out there.
Well ranked on Chinese sites, and official print novels were apparently on sale as of June 2019.

Edit / Potential Problem:
Spoiler

Just a heads up, the novel was temporarily banned/taken off/censored by the Chinese authorities... apparently because supernatural/ghost themes are frowned upon in Chinese media. It was reinstated under the premise that author provide "scientific explanations"... I don't wanna jinx it but I doubt the novel can maintain it's level of quality after chapter 600++.

[collapse]

PREMISE
A gutsy young man inherits a haunted house attraction and cell phone after his parents mysteriously disappeared. He struggles to find clues behind their disappearance while trying to make the enterprise profitable, and slowly discovers a hidden supernatural world that "levels up" his haunting prowess.

CHARACTERS
Protagonist is a plucky, street-smart youth with a background in engineering. He's got a good head for science but is open-minded to the spiritual world. You can't help but root for the guy as he's forced to go through horror scene after horror scene to "level up", while armed with nothing but bravado, wits and hilarious quips.

Better yet, he's surrounded by a cast of genuinely interesting humans/spirits, all complete with their own backstories, character dispositions and motivations. Even the numerous villains he faces are well-detailed from all walks of life!
Spoiler

A psychotic arsonist is driven to mu*der due to fear of abandonment. A beautiful ballerina commits su*cide in an act of desperation. Goddamn dolls everywhere!

[collapse]

COMMENTS
(1) Genius premise
The reason why horror works so well in games and novels is that the player/reader has real agency.
You make the choice to turn the page, go down that creepy corridor that will ultimately kill you, or put you face-to-face with grotesque exploding babies (Dead Space, anyone?).
In "My House of Horrors", the MC is similarly given real choices via the system, aka Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-style. He, and the readers, are forced to go through grueling heart-thumping situations and investigate supernatural mysteries while constantly weighing risks-rewards.
Spoiler

What could POSSIBLY go wrong to undertake a mission to hold your breath under water at 344AM in a haunted house while a mu*derous spirit is clawing outside the bathroom door??

Given all the kingdom-building novels out there, how hard can it be to build a Horror-themed-Disneyland? =)

[collapse]

(2) Great writing style/detailed environments
Any good horror novel fleshes out the environment with sufficient detail while leaving enough to the reader's imagination. And the author got this down in spades.
You can figuratively hear the clawing on the door that separates you from a vengeful spirit, the screams of the dying in their final hours, and the slow descent to madness of the clinically insane. Holy sh*t-snacks!

Spoiler

Phone buzzing with messages...
"Are you there?"
"Are you there?"
"ARE YOU THERE??"

Visitors in the haunted house attraction discover an old notebook ...
"I'm sorry.. I shouldn't have gotten close to you. I just wanted to help pick up the ball.."
"Teacher, I didn't mean to get my clothes wet. Nobody bullied me, it was my mistake."
"Dad, I promise I'll work hard, please stop beating me.."
"I'm sorry, I don't know why my smile annoys people, I won't do it again.."
"I'm sorry.. I'm sorry.. sorry"

A masked lady narrates a story..
"Let me tell you a story about my wife.
She's four years younger than me and works as a midnight radio host, so she's often back late. Shortly after we got married, I used to leave dinner out for her but I'd find the food untouched the next morning. Oddly enough, the cooking utensils appears to be used. At first I thought she didn't like my cooking and didn't think much of it...
Over the next few nights, I heard sounds in the kitchen and noticed someone was cooking with the lights off. She was holding blocks of meat and a kitchen knife... it looked like braised pork, but who makes that in the middle of the night?...
I love her, but it's starting to creep me out...
One night I hid in a corner and heard the sounds of teeth tearing into flesh.. munch munch
I stayed awake. When she slept beside me, she looked so beautiful. I noticed her belly looked a little swollen and hesitated to kiss her.. maybe it's just her idiosyncrasies, but I still love her.
I looked through the tr*sh bags outside.. at first it was just chicken bones. I'm amazed she could finish an entire chicken! Then it was fish. Then a dog, a cat...

[collapse]

(3) Modern, universal horror
As with generational horror, the novel is a serious reflection of current social issues that plague us with anxieties. Post 9/11 (torture p*rn), an increasingly alienated/polarized society (xenophobia), domestic abuse (what goes on behind the walls?), gender equality (vengeful victims of misogyny), school/online bullying (social media, cell phone culture, etc)... the list goes on.

It also pulls in horror elements from ALL cultures, which is just amazing. Japanese high school horror, gruesome fairy tales, chinese mythology, western urban legends, shamanism, etc.

And all with a healthy dose of factual research on the psychological triggers that help make haunted houses... well horrifying.

(4) Kudos to the author
It may be hard for English readers to get full access to author's notes unless you read Mandarin Chinese (since Qidian freebies stop at Chapter 100), but let's just take a moment to appreciate the hard work the author put into this novel.
There's a reason why the author's pen-name is "I-fix-air-conditioners", because those were the odd-jobs he had to do to survive before writing this novel. That's passion right there. <<less

In the sea of novels filled with wuxia/xianxia/xuanhuan came a strange fish named horror. A genre that otherwise is forgotten as the protagonists of most stories engage in fighting gods and demons, can also be considered from the get to go a failure. But is this really true?

From the rating of this novel you might expect a failure, a novel that tried to soar in the skies only to burn in flames and fall to the ground. Yet, after passing the landmark known as chapter 2 the "dead" bird starts... more>> to move in a very intriguing manner. Leaving aside the metaphors, my house of horrors brings the reader in a world where being powerless is normal while the curtain between the strange and the normal is slowly lifted. And so we delve in the world of the paranormal. But how can one write a good story about ghosts when the horror genre in movies has declined to an extreme degree? The answer comes from going back to the roots. And this story does it perfectly. The horror of darkness, of the slight touch you feel on the nape of your neck, the cold that starts spreading around you and the reflection in the mirror that seems to mock you makes this story shine in a very special way.

The rest of the story is only a click away, and I certainly don't want to spoil anything. This story is the best at delivering the chills, and I really don't wish to make anyone miss such an experience. So please, take a break from the strong, proud and fearless protagonist and delve into the nightmare.

Edit: The rating has improved to show the true value of the "horror fish" and the story goes forward with its top quality story telling and awesome characters. No romance is forced down our throats and neither are any events feeling forced or cliche. The horror now has become more gruesome and I can say that I still feel that cold sweat on my back from time to time. One thing that I want to assure the current and future readers is that the story has a main story line, so it won't be just episodic expansions, instead we will enjoy horror that just grows in value. I have high expectations for this story and I hope people will throw a peek on it so that it's popularity will make the author deliver stories that are at least this good and heads over the rest of the recycled stories that seemed to be losing more and more originality.

Edit2: This novel is a work of art. Nothing I ever read comes close it in its genre. I expected it to hit its peak shortly after make the last edit a 225 chapters. But this one is not stopping its ascension. It doesn't stop surprising, it evolves, it brings new things to the table and once you see about half of the whole picture you get shivers down your back. The horror remained great, but it's ability to delve deeper in your conscience increased as each arc seems to have links to each other. The line between good and evil is becoming increasingly small, while the protagonist has turned from a tri-dimensional one into one with a fourth and possible some more. The most recent ark is already in a league of its own and could be a novel in itself, but to be integrated in everything that was built until now makes me wonder why this author didn't start writing sooner to at least have one more masterpiece to read. At the beginning the novel captured my attention with the theme park but as the plot moved on the story surrounding the protagonist became the most captivating factor and at this moment it's evolving into a magnum opus of horror literature. If a series is made after this novel with the same budget as the Witcher or GoT received then it would most probably reign supreme. I can hardly wait to see how the author is planning to unveil all the mysteries but I'm sure he will keep delivering the same quality. <<less

This is a series that gets by having a startlingly original concept, but the execution is mostly mediocre. I will say that the author is very good at making interesting ghost stories, however, they're at interesting, not scary. Nothing in this story will scare you.
Spoiler

My biggest gripe with the fiction is how the author abandoned his best story element. I'm talking about nightmare missions and Chen Ge's livestreaming haunted houses. When those were a thing, I would give story a 4/5 maybe even a 4.5/5. Currently I would give the story a 2/5 because the charm is completely gone.

My second biggest gripe is the repetitive nature of the fiction. After stripping away nightmare missions and livestreaming, Chen Ge basically expands his haunted house by surviving a real haunted house, then he gets challenged by a neighboring theme park or some c*cky tourists. They come into his new house and get scared into fainting. This cycle has repeated about 5 times.

I would definitely recommend you read this. It's great and I think you should just read until it gets boring. Honestly, I don't mind the type that gets boring like this. At least now I'm not going crazy for a sequel that will never happen. I just have a clean break where the book repeated itself into mediocrity.

Edit

Finally went back to read more. I'm probably dropping it for good after this though. There are only another 70 chapters to wrap up the whole series and that just doesn't feel like enough to me. So rather than watch a butchered and rushed ending, I'm just going to stop here. I was forcing myself to read at this point anyways.

There's like 3 major plots I was looking forward to being developed and 70 chapters is not enough for one of them, forget all three. That's just major plots. There are countless minor plots I was looking forward to. It seems to me the author has written themself into a corner because he turned the series into pokemon for ghosts and dropped all the good plot lines. So I'm going to call it here.

Amazingly satisfying read... Not necessarily scary but incredibly thrilling

Tbh, instead of horror, I see this novel as a psychological thriller. The terrifying existence here were not the ghost but instead the humans who manipulate ghost and those around them.

Ghost encounters isnt much a problem cause most of the ghost enemies can easily solved by his op ghosts but is often delayed cause of Some limitations, complications and unexpected handicaps. Ghost here are mostly like a interesting special quirk and not really the main thing. ghost hunting is like a... more>> part time work and solving cases, finding the manipulator behind-the-scene and then defeating them is his main job.

Novel also got comedy but it was mostly confined in his hunted house attraction and not included during his investigative mode.

MC is a fairly complicated character. Can be considered as a unique existence in the sea of chinese web novels. Even after 500 of chapters we only barely know him and dont know much about him. His only drive here is finding his parents, improving his haunted house and everything else is just an extra. He view himself as a normal guy but his mentality is way above anyone and most people around him see him as a monster like existence that is trustworthy and caring individual. He doesnt have anyone who he could call a friend and most people around him have a "acquaintance" "employee" "Costumer" Etc etc relationship status with him. The most trustworthy individual for MC are his Ghost employee and humans kinda feel like a bit distant and alien for him.

As for the side characters. MC have lot of interesting interactions with them and most of the time, without knowing much about them. can make them easily be subjected to suspicion. Everyone can be connected to one and another through different means. And most people around the MC can be someone connected to a case in one way and another. Many have secrets behind there smiles and so there is no character here with an absolute characteristic. They could change in any minute and you're gonna be in for a surprise.

Anyway. The one who should be thanked for bringing us this novel is the author. Author has loads of mystery trick inside his sleeves and most of his ideas are interesting and intellectual. There is no dull moment in his novel and I feel like author can do a detective novel without ghost with ease. So his work deserve more attention so we should support him!! I Highly recommend reading this!! <<less

Best novel I read this year, hidden gem make little of how f*cking good this novel is. This is not a hidden gem, its a f*cking hidden diamond.
+The plot is awesome well writted, everything linkes and makes sense, even with a lot of mistery all time, nothing is forgotten or badly resolved, I cant even fathom how the author can keep so much mistery having to release almost daily chapters on qidian, and the best, every misteries is nice written and reasonable resolved.
+There is a lot of good... more>> comedy in this novel, but in the right times, there is not a forced comedy moment. In a Horror focused novel, to have a nice comedy step is hard, but this one did it well.
+There is deepness and complexity in everything, all the way the author hints more deepness in his mistery, so there is nothing simple or shallow, a lot of things are linked.

PLEASE READ IT, THIS IS SO f*ckING GOOD!!!! <<less

This novel has to be one of the finest horror novels you’ll find browsing this site. Wasn’t expecting too much since this was on qidian but after the first few chapters I was hooked. The author knows how to grab your attention and not let go. I don’t know about you fools, but reading this at night in pitch black alone just makes it even more thrilling.

I wasn't expecting much while going into this novel, and to add to that I honestly don't like/read horror genre at all (its mostly all just gore and nothing else) but after reading this novel to the point I am at currently, all I can say is you don't want to miss out on this novel, trust me.

As I started reading the novel, with every new chapter I read I got pulled in deeper into the story. It just has that way of making you just want to... more>> keep reading the next chapter. Again I really recommend everyone to try this novel, it's truly one of the real hidden gem in this website.

One last thing, for people who want to start reading it or those who just started reading, I advise you try to stick around till roughly ch 20-30, if you don't like it by then, than its probably not a novel for you. <<less

My House of Horrors is amazing. It has it's Horror, it has it's humour and it has a fantastic set of characters.

But is it the type of novel your looking for?

Like it's name, it is a horror. And it does have many horror moments. In fact that is a majority of the book. So if you are looking for a good horror then don't hesitate to give it a go.

If you came because you heard about how well carried the humour in this novel is then you might not... more>> be so enthusiastic about this series. The humour is great, especially in the beginning, not to mention the MC is a big mood as well. But there are many time (especially the deeper you go into the book) where the author puts humour in the back seat for horror and action. Which is what I noticed a lot of people complained about, the fact that there was a lot less funny moments and more pure horror.

If your a fan of a well thought out and executed story, this is a really good read. The author researched alot on many of the topics discussed in this novel, so much so that it feels very realistic. Jobs are well represented, problems are well discussed, and people are people not black, white, and idiot (whatever color that is).

If you are looking for real fleshed out characters, Oh my God is this for you. Every character whether important or not, feel real and are well fleshed out. Hell, some characters are only in one chapter and you can still remember them later on. The struggle, the pain, the joy, it's all reflected amazingly in My House of Horrors. Real life mental problems are discussed realistically. And this type of MC can never be found anywhere else.
Spoiler

Oh the MC and his hammer, the running gag of the series.

[collapse]
One thing to note is that the people around the MC change constantly, most people who appear in one arc will barely be mentioned in the others. The main cast consists of mainly like, four people.
Spoiler

The MC and his ghosts (mostly Xu Yin and Zhang Ya) .

[collapse]

^ This might sound contradictory to when I said the characters are fleshed out. But by that I mean when they are major characters. The major-supporting-character role switches in every arc.

Do you like foreshadowing? Figuring out the hints and clues the author displays early on in the story and coming up with theories as to what's going to happen next? If you do, crack open this book and give it a spin or two. The Author hints many clues throughout the story. I reread once and I found myself reading differently because I was able to catch the hints given, everything had a different meaning. The author mostly never writes something and forgets about it, everything that happens can be a major clue to a future events. And normally you don't catch it, leaving the plotwists to be very satisfying.

If you're trying to get away from cliche (like I was originally), don't worry. No Harem, No Cultivation, despite having a system it's completely different than the usual, MC has a brain, No idiots, People have brains, MC has a brain, No uselessly edgy characters, Things make sense, MC HAS A BRAIN, MC isn't a wimp*.

I feel like I need to emphasize on my last point. MC IS NOT A WIMP!
Honestly Chen Ge is the biggest breath of fresh air ever. He is so different from any horror protagonist I've ever seen. Honestly the type of horror in this book isn't one where you're scared for the MC, while there are moments when you are scared for some characters. Most of the time... well...
Spoiler

You're scared for whoever dares to oppose Chen Ge. lol

[collapse]

All in all I love this series and it has reached my favorite novel of all times (Sorry LOTM).

And if none of these appeal to you... who cares, read it anyways.

Oh but if you don't like LOTM you probably won't like MHOH. They feel similar and the MC's do share many qualities. (Just saw a review about this ¯_ (ツ) _/¯)

The novel that made me realize that horror can be done decently in a novel format!

This novel was a clear 5/5 star for the first 200-300 chapters, it was awesome, refreshing, unique and mixing heartracing horror/creepy stuff with plenty of comic relief placed at good times which truly made me laugh a lot. It's pretty much half comedy, half horror. While it tends to have some comic relief even in serious arcs, it's mostly about cycling between horror ---> comedy ------> horror -----> comedy.

However, sadly, it ends up being kinda... more>> dull after several hundred chapters. I started noticing around 300+, especially around 400+, that I was starting to become less and less interested in what was going on. While the author made everything quite well, he kept things on repeat after a while. After the first round of exploring most stuff, we know exactly what to expect all the time. The MC will take care of his haunted house, then get a mission or get into a police case which makes him get into danger of some kind and having to deal with ghosts, psychos or a mix of both, he will get into danger but unlike the start, it's no big deal. Then he finishes up and goes back to take care of the haunted house and some people will come to court death and kindly "test out" the newest scenario which will result in a lot of comedy, rinse and repeat. This formula is rarely changed.

The author dropped earlier awesome ideas like the MC livestreaming some missions and dealing with the community. It was hilarious and I always looked forward to their reactions, but the MC started to do his own stuff instead and just stopped streaming altogether. At the start, the system/cellphone gave out quite a few cool "nightmare" daily missions which had to do with doing occult stuff, such as summoning a mirror ghost, finding out who enters his room at night, staying underwater in his bathroom at a certain time during the night. This also used to be livestreamed for the community and reactions. It was cool and exciting while being quite creepy and to top it off, it would give the MC personal enhancement rewards. The author made those things extremely rare after a while.

As if that wasn't enough, the author made the MC more powerful without increasing the difficulty of his foes. As this is a horror novel, that means that this guy, after a while, started to become more and more aggressive. Most ghosts cower before him and he isn't really afraid of those that he can't beat easily either as he has the ability to run away. He has one of the strongest beings in his shadows that will always save him at the lost moment if really needed. It's funny how he starts running around beating ghosts up and how his worldview differs so much from others (like when someone said that a guy had tried to summon some ghost in a sewer, he felt sorry for the ghost and asked if the one who tried the summoning even thought about the ghost's feeling for being summoned in a sewer) and chasing mu*derers down with a huge hammer (he'll beat them half to death and pretend to be the victim because they tried to attack him first... Well, later on they know he means business so they'll just run, makes you wonder who's the real psycho). While this is hilarious, it severely affects the scariness and creepiness of the novel as he'll just beat everything. It also stops being that funny after a while because the same gags are used over and over and over again.

So, it honestly become way more of a comedy novel than a horror novel after a few hundred chapters. While it's still quite good and readable, it stops having that special feeling that you can't put it down or wait to read it. The "horror" and "creepy" moments starts to become more depressing, dark and dreary (like talking about some people's sad lives, including a self-insert by the author, and talking about twisted philosophy and reasons for everything) instead of interesting and exciting, more about negative aspects of life than the supernatural, it's a huge flaw, we want action and clear, scary, heart-throbbing plot, not the life stories of sad people that hates their life and pities themselves, that's just not what I signed up for and it also wasn't what we got the first few hundred chapters, truly changed for the worse later on.

I liked this novel a lot and I don't want to scare new readers away, that's why I gave it a 4/5. I personally feel like 3.5/5 might be more apt, but do remember that the first few hundred chapters are a 5/5, no doubt about it. A lot of laughs and scares waiting here! Recommended.

Spoiler

By the way, there is "romance" in here but not real romance. It's really not a focus of the story and the "romance" is with the red specter in his shadow, an extremely OP yandere-type character that doesn't really speak but gets jealous easily and stops the MC from having any romantic intereactions with other females and might prefer it if the MC joined her in death and became a specter rather than staying alive... So, it's more of plot armor mixed with comedy and romance repellent.

The first few hundred chapters are awesome.

Later, the story became bloated.

Around the School of the Afterlife, it is too unbearable to read without skimming fillers. Because by then, the story went on and on depicting trivial things without directions. To top it off, the MC became an unnaturally warm and kind samaritan who burdened himself with the duty to do everything for the poor, vengeful ghosts and kids and women who were hurt. It is too OOC and hit on my nerves as too fake. That character would only be... more>> acceptable if he was portrayed as such - for example, someone like Fan Yu whose character was firmly set in early childhood as a kind-hearted child. But MC is just a normal young adult who wants to find his missing parents. I think the MC’s character template is too much bloated in later chapters - 1) from an ordinary person 2) to a scary person who lets weak ghosts to be eaten by his employees, 3) to a kind, just person who will help the pitiful ghosts and the weak by emptying his savings. If this is called character development then MC’s character must be heading in random directions like an amnesiac, blind person.

Around Ch. 800, I am skipping unimportant paragraphs and I am not missing much. By Ch. 1000, I feel like I can skipped dozens of paragraphs until a new person’s name pops up and still not miss on the progress of the novel. Because there are just too much back and forth blah blah conversations which have no meanings to the story progress or enjoyment of the novel. They are like “Good morning, Tom”, “Hi there, how are you”, “I am good, have you heard...” —- then another 10-20 paragraphs of basically blah blah which have almost zero plot lines —- another dozen paras with the next person —- then actual plot lines. Really, I think certain chapters are just bloated expansion of what should be just paragraphs. It is a torture to read over one hundred chapters for the School of the Afterlife which is hard to enjoy since the arc is bloated to over 500%.

I AM TORN READING LATER CHAPTERS BECAUSE I JUST CANNOT SERIOUSLY READ PILES OF POORLY WRITTEN FILLERS. IT IS SUCH A TORTURE TO READ THOSE MINDLESS PARAGRAPHS BUT IT IS ALSO TASTELESS IF TO PUT MY BRAIN IN OVERDRIVE AND TRY TO PINPOINT ACTUAL PLOTS IN JUNKS. SO I AM JUST READING THIS NOVEL JUST FOR THE SAKE OF COMPLETION. HOPE THE AUTHOR PUT MORE WEIGHTS ON QUALITY OVER QUANTITY OF CHAPTERS BECAUSE LATER BLOATED CHAPTERS JUST TASTE LIKE tr*sh. I WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST TO REWRITE THIS AS A QUALITY NOVEL DELETING TOXIC FILLERS FOR THE SAKE OF FUTURE READERS. <<less

The first 2-3 hundred chapters were awesome. I loved them. Especially the MC completing nightmare missions and doing web streaming.

But after a while it just shifted from horror to action and that's where it starts losing it's charm.

Before I used to actually enjoy reading and the spooky tone was perfect. Even made me feel queasy sometimes.

Now it's just a boring action novel. I don't feel anything for the protagonist cause I know he will get through because of plot armor. This is vastly different from the beginning when I was... more>> actually worried about Chen Ge and was rooting for him.

Chen Ge went from a courageous smart MC using his wits to a dull action protagonist using his ghosts to overpower his opponents. This started from the mental asylum arc (and this formula repeats). Honestly I feel like Dr Gao had a more emotional and interesting background than the MC. For a large portion of the story I wanted to read more about Dr Gao than Chen Ge and that's a real big red flag cause the MC became a dull boring character at the same time. I just feel like the author completely forgot and threw away the horror and the MC's initial characterization. I will complete this novel since I've read this far already but the charm was long lost for me.

Tldr: dont read after the school of the afterlife arc gets boring. <<less

This novel is the epitome of what a thriller novel should be, suspenseful story telling interspersed with heartwarming moments to contrast.

The only real objective criticism that I could give is that the writing itself isn't horribly frightening, not enough to make you go to sleep with eyes wide open but neither does it brush off that element. The scenarios described within are definitely horrifying concepts if nothing else, you'll be looking twice in the mirror at night if you're the of the imaginative faint-hearted kind. This is coming from a... more>> guy that has never successfully finished a single horror movie and is reading My House of Horrors in the dead of night. Other than that, I've really enjoyed the story. Nothing is rushed to finish, but neither is anything drawn out for the sake of word count. I can't recommend it enough. <<less

Amazing until the school of the afterlife arc. During/after that it becomes very wordy and formulaic and the story averages 1-2 stars. There are still the rare 5 star parts, but it's no longer a 5 star story.

I hear that this is because China banned ghost/horror stories and the author had to redo everything and change his style.

Real rating is 3.5

I think the story is overall fine, but it starts to get repetitive around chapter 200 when it becomes extremely obvious that everything is rinse and repeat with different characters. The main character is kinda basic and after awhile I honestly started finding him kind of annoying.

They should rename this, life stories: the novel, because thats the majority of what you will be reading

... more>> The ghosts are the most interesting characters in the story, then some of the side characters and then the MC in last place.

A few issues I had with the MC is the fact that he works against himself in several ways and acts kinda s*upid at times. He feels like a JP protagonist at times the way he tries to act clueless about obvious stuff.

He complains about not having people who he can hire and help him in the house or in general, but every time he comes around someone like him who has a supernatural ability or sense he makes fun of them and acts like ghosts and stuff arent real like a jackass. Its not wonder you can find anyone if you alienate them.

Next, everytime he gets a new scenario unlocked and placed in his haunted house he always needs to clear the one or two hidden missions in that scenario and get rid of any hidden dangers inside. He states this a few times in the beginning and then promptly forgets or stops caring about this and just immediately opens it up to the public.

Once the public tries it, something tragic that wasn't supposed to happen, happens. Then he has to save the customers and close down the new scenario until he completes the hidden mission to make sure it is safe. It gets annoying after a while since you know its gonna happen exactly like this and every time he tries to act surprised.

The haunted house has security issues and he lets his employee just walk around like sh*t might not get real for her.

The missions start to become less interesting and drag on and the sense of danger disappears once he gets the red spector, especially after he gets past the first 3-star mission.

At a certain point, it's just a cycle of main mission, new item or ghost, a new scenario, the customer tries out new scenario, needs to be saved, do the hidden mission for that scenario to make it safe, then do another main mission or daily. <<less

wow this is good. there's a lot of suspense and tension and some of it is super creepy. there's very little gore in the first part but things get messy later on. the comedy is used well to defuse otherwise tense situations and the characters are well written, especially the MC.

the plot starts out simple but gets very complex and so much is interconnected once you start exposing the layers within layers hidden in the more difficult scenarios.... and it all leads back to the MC in one way or... more>> the other. there is a romance, but it's not really the focus for almost all of the story and most of the MC's interest isn't obvious until very late in the story.
Spoiler

to be honest, I'm not sure I can pinpoint the exact time he went from being terrified to being in love even after reading the whole thing. The MC just kind of accepts that either he keeps her happy or he dies and somehow that slowly changes into love as they save each others existence over the course of the story.

[collapse]

I can only imagine how great this novel would have been if the author hadn't been censored part way through and forced to change things. it's still very good, but it's obvious the authors outline was disrupted in the later part of the story, and the ending was nice but kind of abrupt. I wanted more. <<less

In the beginning, I felt that nice mellow fear when I read the ghost stories the MC encountered, later that that mellow fear was just replaced by a feeling of tragedy, no longer was fear the dominant feeling, instead focus transferred to the tragic backstory of the ghost. This change occurred around/after the arc "School of Afterlife" and I never really liked the new direction the story was heading, I think the writer had multiple endings possible before that but decided on "his" ending around that time. Brave tourist challenging... more>> new scenarios was a very enjoyable recurring interlude that continued the entire plot, the live streaming/recording story segments fell to the side, unfortunately. It´s a story well worth checking out! <<less

the first 2-3 hundred chapters of this novel is really good.

sadly, this falls apart quickly because it stops being horror. This has nothing to do with the ban that the novel suffered as this was already written way this way before even the novel got banned for a few weeks due to supernatural stories being banned in china.

the first hint of this becoming action, or perhaps comedy, is during the mental hospital arc where the MC starts chasing after the ghosts, and the ghosts running away from the MC.

this continues... more>> all the way to the end and stops being a good horror novel, but a complete joke.

now that the novel has ended, I also have to point out the ending is really bad. It leaves many plot holes and questions unanswered.

one thing is that his story, is not the story of the MC, but the story of Doctor Gao.

Doctor Gao's story and all the things he did, his goals and his efforts, ended well.

therefore I give this 2 stars because it's great as a story about doctor gao, but as a horror story and Chen Ge's story (the MC), it's actually a bad novel. <<less

The story of Chinese, ghost-busting Steve Irwin I never knew I needed.

Reminds me of the Witcher series with how strongly it leverages folklore to add a fascinating backdrop to the world. But instead of Polish monsters, it's Chinese ghosts.

Refreshingly, the tone of the story remains surprisingly positive. Amidst the depths of despair across this campaign of ghost stories, there's always at least one character still reaching for the light. So, while the content of some story arks get very dark, there's a consistent theme of hope. A comedic undertone even.... more>> And that's mostly thanks to the MC.

I love the MC as a character. He starts off normal (ish) but grows braver with each sally. He loves thinking things through from a madman's perspective. He hates being passive. He is amazing fun to follow as he matches wits and nerves with killers, psychos, and ghosts (oh my!). Sometimes, he even has fun himself. The crazy b*stard.

I really don't like horror myself, but I was actually fine because the MC helped me through. For people who like being scared, I'd also recommend. The ghost stories are thought provoking and touching. Without the MC, nightmare-fuel. If you want to, dwell on what would've happened without him.

Overall, I recommend everyone to try this story. It's got a rich and fascinating backdrop of Chinese ghost culture. It's got strong themes of finding light in darkness, and the bravery to smile and laugh after despair. It's got an endearing and wily MC. And constantly throughout the chapters, he'll grab his black phone, broken tape recorder, comic book, sledgehammer, and white cat, throw 'em in his backpack, and go on a fun adventure (for you anyways). Why not tag along? <<less

This is an excellent suspense/horror/action/mystery/comedy series that keeps me on the edge of my seat. This is the first series I have used the download feature on the app, so I could read it during downtime at work when I didn't have internet access.

The translation quality is excellent. There are a few minor errors where quotes are missing or someone's gender changes, but they're not distracting and are easy to figure out.

The plot is exciting and lead by a active protagonist, who is also a hammer-wielding madman, and he does... more>> not wait for the mysteries and ghosts to come to him--instead, he chases down the stories. He has a penchant for exploring extremely dangerous haunted places in the middle of the night, which frequently results in evil ghosts or people trying to mu*der him.

Thing is, he's often scarier than the ghosts.

He has tremendous character depth and complexity, which forms an interesting and entertaining, charismatic MC. He's a college graduate who is focused on developing the haunted house run by his family while also looking for his missing parents. Even though I've read over 600 chapters of this series, I'm not confident about predicting what actions the MC will take.

The other characters show substantial depth as well and thoroughly fleshed-out with their own individual personalities, experiences, and philosophies. The MC is probably my favorite, but there are many others I like as well.

The setting is modern-day China with ghosts, specters, and nightmares abound. How do these entities form? How does a person become a specter after death? What are these red doors? Who is responsible for all these mu*ders? These are a few of the many questions the MC looks into as he treks through his horror-filled world. Of course, most people are oblivious to the existence of ghosts or else pretend not to believe in them. Unfortunately for the MC, the ghosts are often not the most dangerous creatures he faces but rather the living people who mu*dered them in the first place.

There are a few distracting details that pull me away from the plot. I'm pretty sure the MC's first week of getting involved in the paranormal had more than seven nights. Key details like the opening and closing hours of the park and the working days are not given in the beginning of the story. Even this far into the story, only a couple of other attractions at the amus**ent park have been mentioned, so there isn't much detail about the location. The MC's lack of sleep becomes explained later, but other details like eating, bathing, buying groceries, or doing laundry or other chores are often neglected. At many points, I have wondered if this MC only bathes once a week or less. There also isn't much description about the layout of his home in the park. These missing points in the setting and background leave me confused from time to time.

Most of the cases have hidden meanings and subtexts that can be interpreted from the hints given, adding extra depth and volume.

For me, this is one of the best web novels on Web Novel. Strongly recommended. <<less

The Haunted House owner has the power to control the entire city from the dark, he is invincible with his Red Clothes and powerful army. He can kill or control anyone. He should have more adventure in the real world. There should be a bigger map

-points for most of the time he interacted with the human world, which look so fake, and 4.5 stars for the ghost scenario story.
