Childhood, upbringing, family background, social relations, traumatic experiences…

We keep reviewing and seeking out the motives of criminals, exploring the subtlest emotions driving them. It’s not to put ourselves in their shoes and sympathize, or even forgive them; it’s not to find some reasons to exculpate their crimes; it’s not to kneel down before the so-called “complexity of human nature”; nor to introspect social conflicts, much less to alienate ourselves into monsters.

We just want to have a fair trial – for ourselves and for those who still have hope for the world.

[Technically a 4.6, but I'd prefer it be rated higher than lower].

Despite the story being a bit dull at the start, the pace picks up once we know who the two MCs are. Although their personalities can sometimes be "unstable", there's a overall grasp, and they can end up being the people you love the most in the universe.

The main plot... is a bit convoluted. Of course, the arcs generally make sense, despite the occasional confusion and info-dumping. It's the majority of the story and gives life to the world,... more>> really. Whilst showing us how cruel humans can be, it also brings with it hope. Admittedly, there are some rollercoaster-like twists that get your head spinning in a not-so-good way, but you can understand the shape relatively well if you ignore the blurriness.

Meanwhile, the romance is rather slow-burn. I think this is my favourite part of it, actually. It takes a realistic pace that makes us, the readers, desperate for more. Kind of like drugs, really. Despite the difference in personality, both MCs work well to discover the truth, and they're equal in one way or another. When they're in troubled waters, they will sit down and communicate, though it takes some time.

Side characters... To be honest, it was hard to keep track sometimes. Some had one-time uses and others were remembered in volatile segments. Of course, I still understood and possibly sympathised with some, but there were too many to keep track of, which makes a bit of sense,
Spoiler

considering the crime-organisation thing.

Let me give you an example of why I got confused. Here are some surnames that appeared: Zhou, Zhen, Zhang, and Zheng. Perhaps my memory is too bad for this, but I'd prefer not to have so many major guys with surnames beginning with "Zh." Seriously.

The ending was satisfactory. That's all I'll say for people who wanna know without reading. ☺️ <<less

It's the one of the best bl novels i've ever read. Unlike many other webnovels which are written in a light hearted fancy way (well, I'm not critizing them, they r entertaining in their own way), it has a more serious and philosophical style. The plot is 10/10, writing is suberb (well it's Priest afterall), and the characters are very interesting. The relationship between MC and ML is realistic and amusing, yet very touching, especially in the later chapters where Feidu's past is slowly revealed.

(I've read many crime novels... more>> where everyone else beside MC and ML seem to be brainless, but this novel is certainly not one of those. Side characters r all unique and capable in their own way.)

MC-Captain Luo is a policeman who is smart and good at his job, but he's no Conan. He solves crimes not by his super duper intelligence but in a realistic way as a police officer with the help of his equally capable coworkers. He's openly gay, a good captain who buys breakfast for his subordinates, has a cat, and overall a very charming character.

ML- I have a soft spot for this CEO boi. Fei Du is an especially well written character even by Priest's standards. His personality is very interesting. For most ppl, he's a flirty flowerboy who plays around. In Captain Luo's (early) opinion, he's a dangerous person whose mind is scarily close to that of criminals, yet still a pitiful child who is neglected. But as it's slowly revealed in the story, his actual personality is much more complex and deep than u might think. He's a genius in criminal psychology, and a rich second generation, but he's not OP at all, and his involvement with the police is reasonable and well explained in the later chapters.

In summary, I strongly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a crime lated and psychological type of story, with a slow but heartwarming and straightforward romance between the characters. <<less

Priest goddess with her blessed hands has done it again!!! My cup of tea ah, psychological thriller, mu*der cases, detectives and a mysterious second rich generation smart MC. Although the protagonists might come off as super OP billionaire and crime genius I personally loooove his whole character design. We can see hints of a dark past and trauma, giving an idea of the reason why his train of thought is not like most people. The contrast to the normally righteous law abiding and good person protagonist is wonderful and fresh,... more>> the struggles he presents and how his relationship with the ML develops is really good. Anyways this is a story with some dark, cool and mysterious vibes, amazing world building and portraying of emotions, thoughts and feeling. If you are into this kind of stuff–– welcome to heaven! <<less

The best novel that has ever happened to me. I lost sleep over it. Can definitely tell how much love and effort the author has put into creating the mysteries, the fictional world, the characters. I loved both the MC and ML, and I normally have issues of either or both of them in most other novels! I couldn't stop reading, only when my eyes forcibly close themselves! Truly recommended. It's gonna be hard to find another novel that can top this.

This book is one of priests best, no doubt about it. The plot is complicated, hard to keep track of if you’re not used to the genre and VERY plot heavy. The romance is secondary, but oh so sweet!. All the negative reviews I’ve read are form people who, either are not used to the gente (police crime/drama) or do not like plot heavy stories and can’t keep track of everything.

it takes a while for everything to make sense but IT DOES! The plot is very well constructed, Priest explains... more>> everything at the end and the ending is very satisfactory. There’s a couple of lose ends that are expected form this kind of story, since tying al up in a perfect bow is unrealistic. BUT the main players get their retribution, our heroes all have moments to shine and the main couple get their “happy ending”.
the story is heavy, the cases are heartbreaking and does made me think of the nature of evil, if real justice do exist and how a victim can turn into an aggressor. In true Priest fashion, the writing of full of literary references, is direct and to the point, and her characters are smart and charming.

the main couple are just adorable!. Luo Wenzhou is just to die for! For once he does not have a tragic backstory, he is proud and shameless but cares about other people. He feels like a human being, an ideal cop that can just exist in fantasy, and funny to no end. I loved this character, and it’s on my golden priest trio (Luo Wenzhou, Jing Beiyuan, and Zhao Yunlan).
Fei Du, my poor little baby, he is just too adorable and too scary. Idk I think priest has a type for aloof, cold and mysterious beautiful men who have a dark soul and a rotten perspective of the world, that somehow does not turn them into villains. And I’m all for it. Contrary to other characters who are similar (Bai Li, Shen Wei who in my opinion are kinda scary) Fei Du is so fragile it makes you want to keep him in your pocket and fight against everything that made him like that. Some parts of his past, when revealed, made me drown in my tears. He is a baby and most be protected, I don’t care if he is OP, he makes it up with his personality.
Finally, for everyone who likes priest, this book is a must! So well done and beautiful and cruel and entertaining!. 10/10. <<less

This novel was started with full knowledge that:

  1. I have an immense distaste for cop-propaganda, and that includes your average television crime-dramas.
  2. This book is cop-propaganda.
Folks, I have to tell you, if you have a rational aversion to cops, do yourself a favor and skip this book entirely. Despite my better judgement I read it anyways. And Skipped. And searched. And skimmed. And selectively read. The writing style is good, the plot is complex, and Priest never really fails with literary references, but the slow-burn of the main couple could not save... more>> it from being a nightmare of crime-drama tropes that make me exceedingly uncomfortable.

tl;dr Disappointed but not surprised. <<less

Read it on E. Danglars, for complete translation.

While I do enjoy reading this novel, I also can't recalled most of things happen on the whole story. It's way too too too too complicated, too many names, too many accident to the point at the end it feels lackluster.

Also for someone who need a plot and romance like me, the novel won't fully satisfying as the romance is only very bare minimum. Oh, the CP is Fei Du and Luo Wenzhou.

And again, as a classic problem: the main couple is too... more>> OP while the others a bit bland, except my darling Lang Qiao. <<less

If you've heard reviews saying that this book isn't for those looking for something romance-centric, definitely take them seriously. The romance probably accounts for around 5% of the entire book and I guess I was a little disappointed as a die-hard fan of another popular bl crime-thriller (Breaking Through the Clouds/破云).

I think 默读 is quite well-written for its genre, and things I particularly liked are: 1) Its cast of lovable characters, 2) Scenes capable of making me laugh out loud and 3) Often I would chance upon quotes that make... more>> me linger in thought. I can definitely respect it as a book where a lot of thought has gone into writing it (nothing less expected of Priest). But you'll definitely have to be willing to use some brainpower if you want to follow the story. Personally, at some point, I was suffering from such an overload of information and names that I started skimming everything just so I could complete the novel. <<less

5 and more stars.?????.....

After binge reading the novel for two and half days and nights, here I am to leave my first review on NU - Okay, what can I say, how can I describe this fulfilling story with such fantastic plot - although second arc gave me a little scare haha - ahem! Now if you are a newcomer who stumble here, on this page then what are you thinking more for, just click the first chapter and start the journey.. a worthy journey.

Sincere thanks to the author "Priest"... more>> and as well to the wonderful translators.. Thank you!? ? <<less

Ok so first of all this novel is only for people who like to read detective-criminal stories so those who are only into stuffs like romance, fluff, meng, etc can say goodbye to this novel now.

This novel also requires patience if you want to read it. I almost dropped it because the beginning part of this novel is just not interesting. But as more chapters I read, I got engrossed into the story.

The ml, Fei Du is stated as a coward but he is actually not. He just has a... more>> phobia of blood and that's normal. He's a millionaire and has a company but he's always there to help solving cases with the police department. How does he have time to help them when he runs a company? Well he hired people to manage his company so that's why he has so much free time. Also, he's familiar with the MC, who is the captain of the police department and his subordinate, Tao Ran so I think that's why a civilian like him always gets access into the department. Fei Du seems like a typical playboy who only knows how to fool around but he actually got a big brain and he's also quite sassy.

The MC, Luo Wenzhou is a capable police officer who is both smart and strong. I don't have much to say about him but he's a good character.

Every crime+mystery scene is well thought and written but you should read it carefully because sometimes it can get confusing. I will say this again, if you don't like crime solving type of book, then you may go away now. For those who want to read more chapters of this novel, y'all can read it on wattpad. The chapters are up to chapter 55 as I'm writing this review now. Here's the link, https://my.w. Tt/qxoXjdFOb3 <<less

the false advertising for this book gave me trust issues ngl.

at least the first four cases of the book were slightly engaging unlike book 5, where sh*t hits the fan in the most bizarre way possible and has the most underwhelming conclusion. Like god what did I expect. There was constant dismissal of character exploration/development in favor of some big plot convergence which like? U are really gonna sacrifice ur characters and plot coherency for that? Sike.

trauma exploration? Lies. Dont fall for it. They were right about the novel having... more>> dense and complex writing tho. Complex enough to lay out the same info over and over again bc it was expected of the reader to, I dunno, not get it or be able to hold onto the info themselves? Ive no idea. Honestly if the writing is intentionally written to be unnecessarily complex and literally need a flowchart to even follow through one paragraph of dialogue, it's just really not good writing. <<less

"In the grand scheme of things, this novel is about finding justice and fair trial and that desperation can either bring the best or the worst out of people."

I thoroughly enjoyed it but half of it would be due to my interest in the main idea and heavy topics. Can Ci Pin and Tai Sui (both by Priest) were faaaar deeper and original with building the concepts and creating meaning with all involving characters and plot. It makes sense for Mo Du's though since Priest would have to be careful... more>> with writing about such topics.

There's a decent amount of development of romance and characters. Things only really start going after the first case for the main ship, but their development is prolonged for the whole novel (not a bad thing considering why, but can be unenjoyable). I loved the slow and cautious development between Fei Du and Luo Wenzhou, additionally with how Priest weaves it into the plot so you get to see them together most of the time.

Per usual with her novels, it takes a little while for things to actually start going. For me, the first case was not interesting and doesn't leave much of an impact. The further cases became much darker, which I found more intriguing. The ending was more on the side of coming to a realization for me, that if you look back you see how everything added up to what I quoted.

Most of the trigger warnings were to a severe extent. The only one that was not heavily depicted were the drugs in the first case. The ones that are the most severe are pe*ophilia, psychological abuse and child abuse. <<less

My absolute favorite Priest novel, written with her usual brilliance. I prefer her modern novels as opposed to her historical ones (not that they are not equally amazing) as there is such a dearth of serious well written modern, mystery danmei. Props to priest for doing her research, each case is a delight to read and try to solve, with a phenomenal conclusion which ties everything together.

E. Danglars has a completed translation up which is very well translated so just read this already.

This novel sits firmly in the crime/thriller genre and so makes it harder to rate. Unlike romance centric stories which I rate on enjoyment/entertainment value, a story in this genre gets a more critical eye I think and opinions will vary a more.

Imagine a world where Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy, Zodiac Killer, and hundreds like them are all living and operating at the same time and place and card carrying members of the Association of Sociopaths And Psychopaths (ASAP). Now imagine that this also exists, the Rich and Powerful... more>> Folks United to Support ASAP (Disclaimer: the RPFUS-ASAP may also qualify for ASAP themselves but being rich and powerful gets you more than a card). How much you buy into this will probably determine whether you think it's a wonderfully intricate crime story or a ridiculous jumping the shark story.

There are 5 arcs in the story and follow the same pattern. A "simple" crime/mu*der victim and the perpetrator/criminal starts off a chain of events that leads to a bigger web of criminal activity (drug trafficking, police corruption, pe*ophilia ring/mu*der, etc.). But behind that is an even bigger conspiracy that connects all the arcs together.

Now onto our crime fighting gang led by the 2 mains, Fei Du and Luo Wenzhou. The crimes and trying to solve them takes center stage but in between all that, the 2 are trying to build a relationship. The relationship between them is pretty entertaining, well written and a bit of fresh air in between all the relentless darkness of the crime stuff. <<less

This novel is very well written, you can tell our Lord and Savior Priest planned it all before starting.

Fei Du is a very complex character that grows a lot throughout the whole thing, Luo Wenzhou is fun and caring, I love all the nick names people give him.

The side characters were interesting too, always multi-faceted and deeper than what can see the eye.

The mysteries were very raw and instigating, I loved it. Can't wait for the donghua and other future adaptations!

Wow, what a plot. It's got so many plot threads and characters that you might get confused but it all makes sense at the end. There's humor amongst all the horrors in the story. Romance is slow burn, which I like. The side characters, even the cat, are likeable and memorable. The translations are A+++... so so professional... the entire story is already translated by E. Danglars so you wouldn't have to wait at a cliffhanger.

Omg what a ride. Pls protect Pres. Fei. He deserves all the hugs in the world. It's a really good read. And alot of good explanations behind why people act the way they do. And how sometimes, a group of victims become an echo chamber of revenge-seeking individuals that has been twisted with malice. I love every second I spent reading the novel. All the footnotes, explanations and nuances are quite well expounded.

I highly recommend this novel. Please read it

I absolutely enjoyed this novel. Let me tell you why... Of course, when you come to read here, most of the time it is to find a nice and relaxing story - not necessarily a simple or always positive, just something to entertain yourself with. As far as romance is concerned, these are mostly light novels, so nobody truly expects something beyond the story itself. In other words, these are mostly single layered novellas with hardly any message other than a romantic feeling. However this novel quite often had some... more>> exquisite sentences or paragraphs, somehow insightful about life and death, human life, society. While the main characters were often so clever, there were a lot of cute moments with the cat, the whole atmosphere of the novel is what kept me reading. The crimes were not too simple and the whole pacing of the story was very elegant. For me the overarching message was something like this:

Spoiler

From one perspective the message is definitely that humans can overcome their circumstances... And I am not talking about material wealth here. I am talking about moral character... the most upright upbringing/ social standing can be just a front and people that seem like despicable swindlers will have the biggest hearts. Many will have pitiful stories, but not many will be able to rise above. Destiny can break people, but it is they themselves who raise their hand to commit a crime... Suffering often tragically explains further suffering, pain and loss may cloud peoples' judgement. It is not easy to do the right thing and it is not easy to reflect and consider. From another perspective, it probably is about trust, considering people deeply... Some will have some dregs of dignity, some will have none, while some shine brightly. Love can absolve and justify things, love can save and soothe.

[collapse]

Read it and make your own judgement... I am curious what others would take away from this novel. For me this story had a lot of taste and after taste. <<less

My God, it is such an intense read! I marathoned this in 2 days!!

Y'know a novel is really good if it can immerse the readers with the emotion in the story! This is one of the few novel that can make me feel the thrills and goosebumps all over from the cases. There are many novels that can make me laugh but rarely there is a novel that can make me pound worryingly at the action part, that can make me curse angrily at a certain villain, that can make... more>> my heart beat rapidly at suspense part like this!!

And the MC-ML pair in this story reminds me of the pair in Earth Is Online because both of this pair a smart & intelligent couples. And I love the ML-Captain Luo as much as I love Major Fu!! He is such an easy-going but reliable, dependable, smart and strong leader and partner!! <<less
