Transmigration of Mian [Reluctantly] Becomes His Man [Wife]

Description

Qin Mian opened his eyes and found himself lying in a leaky thatched room. The problem was that he was still in his family’s villa beforehand! What’s more, another man was lying next to his leg in the quilt!

“You, you, who are you?”

The man sat up quietly, his upper body exposed as looked at Qin Mian for a moment before he carried a worn-out bowl with a cracked corner from the low table at the head of the bed. The man said in a muffled voice, “Wife, drink water.”

Qin Mian’s eyes rolled backward and he passed out.

Title explanation: 勉为其男 [miǎn wéi qí nán] have the same sound as 勉为其难 [miǎn wéi qí nán] which means to do something reluctantly. 勉 [miǎn] is also part of MC’s name: Qin Mian. Also, 其[qí ] sounds the same as 妻 [qi] means wife. So, there are words plays. Basically, Qin Mian reluctantly becomes someone’s man [wife] after he transmigrated.

First Impression

This was the first historical slice of life novel I came across, and only later I found out that farming novels with a 'poor to riches' plot is actually quite a popular genre? This one seemed to check all the boxes of what I wanted to read so I was quite excited.

The Plot

  • As a slice of life, there aren't any truly serious conflict in the novel although the family members are a huge thorn in the MC and ML's lives. The main focus is still on them making money and improving their lives, but the occasional drama does make things more exciting.
  • The worldbuilding is also detailed that when I reached the end of the novel I didn't want to leave the idyllic little village where most of the story took place.
The MC

Ahh, what to say about the MC except he is probably born to be a businessman. Although you can argue that his most prominent trait is his cooking skills. I was pleasantly surprised to read about how the MC actually had humble origins and is no stranger to working hard, so although his husband still does most of the heavy lifting, the MC also does pull his own weight and originally didn't plan to rely on the ML at all. Like many clever MCs he still schemes and plots, but usually only as a response to people threatening his and the ML's peaceful lives.

The ML

My sweet devoted ML! He is a man of few words but incredibly capable, which makes him and the MC such a power duo. My favorite thing about him is how he has always been devoted to taking care of the MC from the very start, even when there were still strangers to each other. A dutiful husbando with a mysterious past, he is an ideal ML in so many ways.

The CP

There isn't much in the romance development department. Their relationship progressed so subtly and naturally that I can't even really tell when they fell for each other. It does happen early though, and once their relationship became physical they actually have a very healthy and active s*x life lmao

Others

Reading this constantly made me hungry. The graphic descriptions of food were very appreciated. I'm Chinese so the cuisine isn't really anything new for me, but I got a craving for hotpot while reading this. <<less

I've read slice of life but this still felt boring. I wanted to know more about the villagers but towards the end it seems to be more focused on royal intrigue. Speaking of royals, I really hate the emperor. He demanded the ML take his previous position after he resigned and had his own family because he needed to take care of one thing really, was there no one else. And was also the reason why ML had to resign, trying to force his niece on him. His half brother even killed the stepmother of the ML and the only thing he could give the ML was that he was going to investigate it when he already knew who did it. The point is I didnt really see why they had to put up with it to begin with. But apart from that the ML has a weird situation going on, and I just cant bring myself to like him. The original died in his care while he was sitting on a pile of money and had magical healing pills. I know that if the original didnt die then we couldn't have the pairing but that's really messed up when you think about it. His intentions towards the original also had me looking at him sideways. It was only mentioned that he wanted to marry a guy because he didn't like his step mother so continued to equate every female to her, which is such a lazy move to me, I mean his dad was awful to him as well, didnt see that turn him off men. The other thing that got me was the time line, ML is a genius martial artist, better than anyone in the novel. But only really had about 6 months of training?? Meanwhile MC had been practicing for years with assistance from his spring water and still wasn't good enough.

This one is good! I want more!!! ???? Slice of life in ancient times. The MC transmigrated in a backward rural farm. He woke up in a different body just a few days after the originalqQin mian married the ML.

Whereas, the ML is an ideal guy ? Knowing that he would be betrothed to man he felt disappointed but agreed since he was a little aversive to females similar to du shi. The MC looked at ML with no fear and disgust, this led the ML to fall in love... more>> with MC. Also, the ML is filial. His stepmom and dad mistreated him (but not to too much to cost one's life), so he is still good to them unless they touch the ML's inverse scale (MC). This is honestly good. Recommended for those who love a chill-read without much dog blood drama. Only annoying stepmom, dad and some neighbors. This is focused more on farming, cooking, generating income and daily life of MC and ML (very minimal on cultivation).

The emperor is also okay. He may be a little selfish but he is also reasonable.

Cons: I don't know what happened to the original body of MC. <<less

I didn't finish this novel and couldn't see myself doing so, I dropped it when the last, let's call it 'arc', started.

To sum it up – I'm very disappointed.

It started out strong, MC used his modern knowledge to make himself and ML rich, gained some power and influence, cleaned up ML's horrendous family, and was overall a clever and hardworking young man.

Although...

Spoiler

The existence of a magical space with magical water, fields, and a house full of stuff from our time, seemed pretty out of place and made me question the author's plan for the story, then a magical wolf showed up that gave him his space and was seemingly transmigrated as well.

[collapse]

For a "transmigrated into ancient China and getting rich" story, both were a strange move but still somewhat acceptable.

I began to lower my initial rating of 5 stars because:

Spoiler

There suddenly was cultivation, magical pills, and ML being a martial arts master that can easily beat up a large group of bulky men without breaking a sweat, before starting to teach MC cultivation in the most "magical" way possible, with spiritual essence, breakthroughs, and everything Xianxia/Wuxia has to offer.

[collapse]

The aspect that broke the pot:

Spoiler

She turned MC pretty much into a woman, including pseudo-pregnancy, because we definitely needed magical flower babies that he, for some reasons, had to "bring to terms" with his spiritual body, while ML wasn't involved at all.

It's one thing to make a character seem very feminine, it's a whole different beast to let him go through "pregnancy" with all of its characteristics.

[collapse]

It became quite clear early on that the author herself had no idea what her story is supposed to be, she included basically every trope and genre she could think of, and it leaves the story with an unfitting mix of Wuxia, Xianxia, dog-blood drama, business, pure fantasy, and politics, combined with an immense tendency to emasculate the MC until he's more or less a woman.

The novel tries to be everything at once but does none of it properly, it likely would have if she had left it at transmigration and building a business/getting rich, but the sudden shift to complete fantasy and jarring feminisation pulls it down to the level of a pretty bad Gary Stu self-insert fanfiction.

MC is more intelligent than all the other characters combined, ML is overpowered beyond believe, both aren't gay, have ulterior motives, and still fall in love because – why not?

There has to be romance, how much sense it makes doesn't matter.

And if there's need for a certain plot-point that can't be explained reasonably, then the author brings fantasy into it, a sure way to "justify" the existence of all the sudden nonsense she pulled.

Spoiler

There was no foreshadowing or any kind of hint that Xianxia-typical cultivation exists, it came out of nowhere when it was most convenient.

A baby bottle or powdered milk? MC has baby/toddler items in his magical space, because a single, child-less guy conveniently bought them 'just in case' that he needs them someday.

[collapse]

The questionable s*xual aspects really don't help her case, you would think that someone who writes erotica, even soft-core/fade-to-black, wouldn't honestly believe that having s*x with a man at age 16 is somehow detrimental to one's future physical constitution.

And yet, here we are, but at least it's a new misinformation about gay s*x that I haven't seen before.

On another note, every villain is unbelievably s*upid, even compared to other people from their time.
It's obvious that someone who's so into money and good at buttering up those in power would stop to trouble their, now rich and influential, son - instead they seem to intensify their efforts to ruin the relationship.

If you read carefully, you will find a lot of these instances where characters exhibit such unbelievably dumb behaviour that goes against their initial setting, that it ends up being just another novel that turns everyone into idiots so the main characters can look intelligent.

I give it two starts because the first 110 or so chapters were decent enough as a business-story, but I can't bring myself to rate it higher than that thanks to everything that comes after. <<less

-About how ML uses his modern knowledge to make his business successful.

I like that he was like a chef so he can create new and innovative dishes that amaze everyone. I don't like that he is also an engineer capable of creating diagrams of cooking devices, furniture, plumbing, although he himself admits that in his past life he didn't know how to do much. Not only that, he is able to run a business successfully the first time even though he also has no experience with it.

How he starts his... more>> business is a bit jarring because of how unrealistic it is. The construction of how money works is strange and repetitive: The author writes that MC offers X amount of money, people are amazed because they usually receive Y amount of money, so with that, they are receiving double/triple amount of money. This scene is repeated for salaries, gifts, bonuses, etc. Considering that there are no references to how much a family earns on average, nor the expenses they carry, it is tedious to read arbitrary numbers each time they appear. Sometimes the author throws high numbers to show how expensive the things are but in reality, doesn't mean anything because MC and ML always have money to buy something. Never, not even in the beginning, does the leading duo have money problems. They just needed to get away from undesirable people to start making effortless money thanks to the almost magical abilities of the MC (I will talk about this later).

-About the Genre

It is a light novel with many details about the daily life of the protagonist couple. For the most part, is easy to read and follow, but there is little consistency in certain details. The protagonist is a chef, yes, and at each meal, he cooks a lot of dishes with meat, seafood, pork, regardless of the season, their financial situation, or the preparation time. The author adds recipes here and there, new creations and modern dishes to make the protagonist shine but in each important banquet, they serve meat, seafood, pork (it seems that a real feast has to include at least three different types of meats). Sometimes they mention that they go hunting, they eat the meat once, and that's it.

In conclusion, the Slice of Life is pretty accurate, the historic part not so much, and the supernatural... well. We can say the supernatural thing refers to how the MC is good at everything he does, but not because of the MC perse...

Spoiler

The MC has a kind of three-dimensional closet called "space", which is not exactly a closet but rather a huge house with many rooms, an eternal landscape, and enough space so that he can store everything he wants. In my opinion, this "space" takes away the value in everything that the protagonist does: Everything that the MC cooks is delicious because he adds the magic water from the spring that is in the "space". Everything the MC farms grows wonderfully because he adds magic water to it. The MC is quickly cured by the magic water. The MC is made beautiful by the magic water.

In addition, the "space" becomes the easy way out that the author uses to solve most problems: Store food so doesn't spoil it. Store dead animals so as not to carry them from one point to another. Store machines and other modern tools that make work easier (and the MC has all kinds of machines even sewing machines). Store all kinds of condiments and more. There are no rules about how this space works or what is inside it. Live animals can come in, people can come in, dead animals can come in, the MC can take whatever he wants because it's basically another little world that he owns. And the best is he can share it with his significant one forever.

[collapse]

-About the characters

The villains are loud, silly, and foolish. There are certain characters that change their personality as the novel progresses, a detail that is appreciated, others seem interesting, but in the end, all of them stay flat.

Spoiler

And it is a bit tiring to read about how the main couple return to the old house with gifts or something, sit in a corner without interacting with anyone, only to see the family argue/brag/lament and then leave without doing anything. I understand that it is a tradition to visit the family house, but if there will be no changes in the interactions, why not just put it as a footnote and move on?

[collapse]

-About the supernatural aspect (aside from MC)

I was quite surprised about the cultivation stuff, it clarifies why ML was almost invincible and why he had a magic pill at the begging, but since the author didn't mention anything for the first hundred chapters is a bit surprising and out of place. There is a chapter where the author states that the ML tells MC about his past, but that's it. A phrase in a paragraph that could have served as an introduction to the cultivation world and more but comes to nothing. So when it appears it feels like bad planning about the plot. Their business is so successful in the beginning that we need to move on to something else because there are no more challenges in that regard.

-About the pairing.

I like how the progress in their affections, although there are certain attitudes of the MC towards the ML that I find slightly childish. I like the idea that they do not jump into bed as soon as they kiss. In that aspect, things progress quite calmly, with a lot of kisses and heated moments
Spoiler

for that you need to read ~60 chapters so be patient

[collapse]
.

Conclusión: The worldbuilding is not good and the solutions for each problem are almost disappointing, but it's a light novel to read if you don't want complications or angst. With kids at the end, not so much communication between the main duo because the ML does everything the MC wants. <<less

It was good till the royal arc at the end. Then it was a WTF moment for me because I was rationalising the characters actions. The points after this are mostly going to focus on what frustrated me most.

Secondly, the space thing was just a prop at the beginning. It was dumped like the author didn't know how to integrate it into the story in the first half of the book.

Thirdly, other than fluff, the book is weak in every other emotion. There are golden opportunities laying everywhere (because of... more>> the depth of the side characters) to create contrasting emotions in the readers.
Spoiler

For example, the male lead's stepmother, Du. She acted terribly towards her stepchild and was stingy, miserly and strict in handling the salaries of everyone in the family, including her married sons. BUT it's undeniable that her frugality is what kept the family afloat. She is a hateful character but her one redemption point is that she had the foresight to pour all their income into sending the most talented child in the family to school till he becomes an official. To that end, her demise was weak. Especially after all the build-up. The emotional reaction (relief, sadness, anger) was flat when we were informed of her downfall.

[collapse]
When someone dies, the two leads' reactions are flat. When someone marries, their reactions are flat. At a newborn's ceremony, they don't even do something extra that warms the readers hearts (the other characters are gratified by their material generousity though, but we, the readers, know that's just a drop in the ocean for them). Outside their little bubble of their nuclear family, they can offer help to others but don't really care if those people stumble or not.

That said, I liked reading about the MC building his businesses (though all the food seemed to involve noodles for some reason, LOL).

The cultivation and the royal arc just seemed to pop out suddenly though but it's okay. That said, a lot of foreshadowed characters get "wasted"
Spoiler

we get an epic, through illogical bargaining, scene where the meet a man hunting a wolf prey that the MC feels a connection to. The male lead, irrationally, pulls out a precious bottle poison holding a rare all detoxifying pill from nowhere in exchange for the little wolf. The pill is so rare, it is supposed to attract sweet trouble later! But, sadly, many chapters later, the pill really has no effect on the storyline than to link those two as acquaintances, though the characters could just be easily as linked as a love interest of the main characters close business friend.

[collapse]

Again, lots of wasted foreshadowing that are letdown by their flat influence on the storyline.

The great thing that hooked me in initially is the development and uniqueness of each side characters, especially the male lead's family. Initially each had their own drive for doing what they did and acting how they did. Though I felt the characters were watered down a bit towards the end. But I really wanted to see more beautiful side character development e.g. The people they bought that hang around the MCs all day. We know them and their names but for all that they could just be interchanged and the story will still flow. Basically, they were all cardboard cutouts there to occupy space..

As for the revenge and face-slapping? The progression was very mature as the characters dealt with things based on a realistic concept (which is, if they act out and vent, people won't necessarily judge them right which would make things harder for them as an uncommon couple). But again, the flow suddenly reversed and in a span of a few chapters the c*ckroaches in the household were smashed! Worse part is, though these people were terrible, Thier fall affect the innocent loved ones around them. So, I will say face-slapping is not really the point of the book, I guess. The book is still a great novel to invest time in. <<less

The best thing about the story is how loving the ML is towards his wife. Basically an iceberg to everyone but a marshmallow to MC. He is the cute jealous type, not the yandere jealous type.

They started out in this rural village, living next to the chicken coop, disdain by the ML's dad and stepmom. ML was forced to marry MC because some fortune-teller said something. Thankfully not all the stepfamily are annoying. Unfortunately, the annoying ones stay on for quite some time.

There is some face slapping here, but it's... more>> not a big part of MC's agenda. He just wants to get out of the chicken coop and make money to better their lives.

I have a guilty pleasure of liking stories that try to bring modern-ish tech to apply it to primitive/ancient setting. This story focused more on modern Chinese cuisine being introduce in ancient China. It is always hotpot though.

I made it through 170 chapters of atrocious MTL butchering, so... Imma just wait for the translated chapters coz this point of the story is palace politics and drama, and my brain just cannot anymore. <<less

Gahh I really love this novel! It feels so relaxing and sweet to read, and although it may not be one of those 'high complex plot', 'developed one-of-a-kind characters and side-characters' and 'struggling, not OP protagonist' novel, it's still really really good in it's own way~

The protagonists are a bit OP but I honestly don't have a problem with that at all. It's true that sometimes I want to read a realistic and struggling human protagonist but sometimes it doesn't hurt to read about OP ones. OP protagonists are great... more>> I tell you. I don't understand people who say "oh, but the portagonist is so OP it's not realistic at all" like dude? It's a book? It doesn't have to be realistic--- We all need to take a break sometimes form those books with heavy plots and characters.

That's why I like this kind of sweet, slice of life, relaxing, dog food feeding kind of novel~♡♡♡

... Though I DO kinda find it annoying with all the "sister-in-law, lady, madam, wife"... Fine I don't really mind Lei Tie saying wife, and I know it's ANCIENT times but still... : (

BUT STILL- I would recommend everyone to try and read this! If you don't like it, it's not your cup of tea and just move on thank you!☆ <<less

I like the novel. It's a relaxing read. The MC is clever and the ML is a nice but quiet guy. Plus the face slapping is pretty satisfying... HOWEVER! The ML keeps calling the MC wife and everyone keeps calling him sister in-law... it's pretty uncomfortable. Why can't the ML call him husband? Why don't the relatives call him brother-in-law? It's just a small thing, but idk why it bothers me so much. Excluding that I think it's a nice read. I just really hate the author trying to have... more>> the MC take the role of a female in the relationship when one of the reason people read it is because it's about to men. Idk.

Edit- Nvm this was written 2014. That explains a lot. <<less

Rating: 3/5- I kinda enjoyed this read although from a sense perspective... it's pretty surreal. The book is nonsensical overall.

There's almost no difficulties experienced by the characters once they meet and they're basically perfect and inclined to fame and fortune from the get go. The kids are perfect, the relationship is perfect, all the villains are s*upid... it's basically like nothing can ever go wrong which was quite boring and monotonous past volume 1. Even the MC who was a scrawny, dirty s*ave child forced into underage marriage- is suddenly... more>> transformed into a model like god who is a cultivator in only but a few chapters. Their children grow into mature and well mannered miniature adults in the span of a few sentences... perhaps the author had varying stories in their mind and just put it all down... together... in the same book... ?

There was just way too many themes mixed in that distract from a solid plot, like historical settings with cultivation then back to the future... yeah it was a mess.

I also disliked how easily Qin Mian accepted s*avery with an attitude of "when in Rome". You'd think a modern person sent back into time would feel more strongly about dealing with people using title deeds. It's a horrible theme that's used in this book and the author didn't even try to express more criticism towards it.

I didn't love any of the characters. Period. No one was likeable. Not even the kids... and I actually love reading about kids.

I prefer thought, complexity, emotion and character in my books so this fell very short of a decent plot BUT it's still a killer when it comes to relaxing your mind. I really don't know why it was so good as a read to literally calm me TF down after a rough day. So in that department this passes as a read to get your mind off of stuff.

Overall opinion: read it when you just want to pass some time or calm down, with your entire brain switched off (I read this to get my mind off work). Don't expect anything fantastic. <<less

I don't have that much comment.

All I can say was, MC is good. He didn't accept ML too fast at the beginning. I don't dislike love at first site but strangers like MC and ML loving each other after marrying only a day is a big NO.

ML is also good. He didn't also love MC at the start. He slowly like him when he knew that MC wasn't afraid of him.

... more>> The plot is good, though there are parts that are boring to read.

It's a slow life so for many its boring but reading it on your own pace and without rushing is recommended. <<less

I haven't read much "slice of life", so I don't have a standard yet. But it was a very pleasant and fun reading, I loved the couple very much although I would have liked it to also delve into the secondary characters, in general it was good.

Highly recommended ? Especially those who love a slow romance, farming and age-progression

Some may find it boring since this is a slice of life in an undeveloped village far from capital. Most of the scenes are cooking and farming. Though there are scenes where the MC's family goes to capital, it isn't much. So, if you aren't fond of these better find a novel with slapping scenes than rate the novel low since it's unfair to the author and translator.

A very wholesome story full of positive emotions. It essentially delivers what it genre (slice of life/farming) promises but does it in a very entertaining way. A good story. Didn't feel dragged or rushed.

I won't say unique as its one of those where MC has a relatively smooth sailing despite having problems in life.

but maybe because of author's presentation it didn't feel gary sue at all. A very enjoyable read.

And one of the few stories where MC doesnt mind being called Lady or wife. He thinks it doesn't matter what people call him anyway as long as his family is with him.

I truly liked his charecter most.

The author meshes too many genres together, like the last arc is the absolute worst. Plot set ups that could be interesting never lead up to anything, such as with the space. Plot holes are littered everywhere. MC is selfish in a weird way and gets angry over dumb things.

ML is quite nice but sometimes you want him to grow a spine when it comes to the MC’s attitude.

We’re shown that CM wants kids, not just because it’s also part of his filial piety as the only son but because he likes them, yet his lover forbids him from a having a kid. Despite the fact that ZH himself had already fathered a kid for the very same reason. How is it love if you refuse to in ancient China of all places, not let your lover get his duty done, especially as doing it means that you two can get full family approval. We’re also told that basically when ZH’s child’s mother, who we never get any detail on, was pregnant, is essentially when him and CM started being a thing, which is gross. Author seems to realise how unlikeable that makes ZH and suddenly CM doesn’t want kids and dislikes women or something, a 180 that makes no sense. Honestly absolutely hateful little relationship in the back, where you just wanted to scream at CM to leave this controlling and toxic relationship.

[collapse]

Anyway back to the main leads, they had good set ups but poor executions and everything they acquired was almost too fast and just kind of boring.

I give 2 and half stars because I did like that the main characters were openly communicating with each other, affectionate and ride or die for each other and because their kids weren’t hateful.

I really enjoyed this. The plot twist were super unexpected and interesting. For some weird reason it made me productive in irl. 🤔

Solid 5 starts in the first half, really interesting to follow along and the relationship progression was adorable. ML was protective from the very beginning and it was sweet to watch their interactions. A red flag was how detailed the author was about the age difference tho... MC was mentally older but in a 14 yr old body :/ thankfully there was no romantic progress until later on and ML was great on getting consent but it was still weird. Past the halfway mark, the story just got wilder and... more>> they became more successful and they became OP out of nowhere. THEN, it just got nonsensical and plot twists were flying out at you from nowhere. Really miss their simple life together. <<less
