Once she woke up, Gu Xuejiao became the arrogant and willful stepsister of the book’s male lead. Her specialty resided in breaking the relationship between the male and female lead… she is the nth female character.

Gu Xuejiao thought about this character´s ending. A desolate, abhorrent annihilation… and decided it’s better to continue to practice the Wu San workbooks she just finished in her last life.

The Cheng family watched in alarm:

The girl who was rebellious, and only served to let others worry; asked with a simple expression:

“Do you think it’s better for me to apply to Tsinghua University or Beijing University?”

Cheng family: ….

Note: Wu San workbooks is the Chinese version of Barron’s and Princeton’s for the SAT

Overly dramatic and heavy-handed in its treatment of social issues and 2ML, but also avoids many of the common pitfalls of the genre. 4 stars.

Mm, it's really hard for me to review it because I really love Xue Jiao's enthusiasm (tunnel vision) for her studies. It's basically the only thing keeping the trope filled novel afloat with all the problems the author tossed in unnecessarily. Translation is great and mostly understandable (some phrases sometimes give me trouble in meaning because sometimes I see double meanings - I usually go to the comments to get clarification). Overall the story is fun to read, focused primarily on XJ's progress (which is literally only uphill). Problems are... more>> solved quick, villains are smacked silly (literally).

Downside is almost everyone else. Do not read further if you want to start the story off in a good light because I have a lot to rant about.

Male leads:

Lin Zhihua -
Spoiler

The very obvious final destination ML. Older, and imo, gross. Not because age difference, but because LZH is in a different life-stage than the XJ. People defending him has to know, he's dealing with his own company and deeply criminal actions from his relatives and her current goal in life is to pass college entrance exams. XJ has no experience outside of studying, while he's vastly more experienced and knowledgeable. He has the typical ML tropes where he avoids all touch, rejects all females, dislikes sweets, is a general ice block, except for anything to do with the MC. He stalks her a lot, too. It doesn't take long for him to find out anything that happens to her and is just conveniently there for her, solving her problems and offering advice. He cares a lot when his boundaries are trampled by his parents, but he still keeps an eye on her info, knows everything just as it happens. If he weren't the ML, parents would be seeing a red warning sign - older man, giving gifts, showing off his ability, daughter going to him for any troubles, meeting him at the evening alone with no chaperone and reluctant to give out info on who he is. We also see in his perspective, and yeah, he sees her as a love interest, gets jealous of all the teenaged boys around her. He helps her help her male best friend because he doesn't want her spending her thoughts on him. He sees her post a selfie with her brother and male best friend and he's suddenly at the same party...

Yi Tianyu -
Spoiler

a rich, immature fool, a bit wholesome but not in her league in terms of intelligence. The author gave him so much screentime but I believe the intention was basically a compare and contrast with LZH outside of having a shield to defend from Cheng Mengjiao. Look how a he depends on you, while you can rely on me. Look how he just resorts to force, while I CEO-style search and destroy someone. Look, I don't need to rely on my parents, while his parents spoils him rotten. YTY sees how nice she is, how pretty she is working hard and falls in love. Anything nice she does for him is like fodder for him to love her more, even if she has zero intention of it being that way. (Being nice is being flirty, amirite?) It's also fairly cringe how he ends up continuing to be seated next to her, even though the seating chart is based on exam rankings. His parents bribe his seat the first round, and for the second round, despite her parents requesting that they not be seated next to each other because of his obvious puppy love, he ends up being next to her anyway. I don't understand the author baiting him like this. XJ doesn't even care that much, but she's grateful for his assistance in defending her to her bullies, so she helps him stay in the class. I also read in another review that his ending is bad and he gets pathetically stuck on his unrequited love for her? 💀

Cheng Mingze -
Spoiler

As the original Ml, he's a little too perfect. He's kind and generous, smart and athletic... if only he wasn't MC's step-brother. 💀 Dislike how author makes him get inklings of feelings rather than allowing us a fully wholesome sibling relationship. I'll say that it mostly feels like a sibling pair, but there's a few of those one shot little sentences of "oh she's pretty... but that's wrong to think of her that way" that makes it seem like the author is planning for him to be a sis-con. He gets upset at other boys liking her like/with YTY. That can be explained as protective, since these are all rowdy/h**ny boys and he doesn't want her to fall into their clutches.

Female Characters -
Spoiler

All the female characters are terrible except the ones the MLs' use as wingman props. MC's mom is easily influenced and manipulated to the point where we wonder why the step-dad likes her. She slaps people at the drop of a hat, MC included. Stepmom is (low tier) petty and manipulative, step-aunt is (mid tier) manipulative and hates MC and her mom for no reason except that they're outsiders and her daughter is same age. (What's wrong with remarrying??? Did the step-aunt like the step-dad for some reason???) Half-sister set her up, cousin baits and bullies her. Legit no female friends allowed.

[collapse]

Everyone needs therapy.

The only nice and sincere person is her stepdad. Go Cheng Shuo!!

Spoiler

Genuinely feels like the author really dislikes all females outside of the perfectly studious types. I don't think there's anything wrong with being slightly different, but the way they treated the original Gu Xuejiao was so terrible. Even XJ kinda disdains her, if she wasn't so preoccupied with studying to care.

Came here for romance, got some boring shounen exam tournament arc instead. Female lead does nothing but study to be the top in school while competing with other smart students. Characters are extremely bland with the sole exception being the 2nd male lead (who's obviously not ending up with the female lead).

I really love this novel. I have read this and MTLed it and read it again. I love novels about being school topper I have read the others too. Can anyone recommend novels where the MC is good at studies? There is also 1 novel I have read before but I can’t remember the title. There is one scenario where the MC answered and draw half of a mathematical/science theory and was accused of plagiarism by some professor then was face slapped.

The story follows the MC as she advances through school with the goal of doing well in the college exams in mind. Her main personality trait is that she likes to study and is basically that nerd in school that always has a book in hand. The conflict in this is mainly caused by the parents who weaponise their children (we all know the drill, my child is a blah blah blah, oh yeah? My child is blah blah blah). In their fight against one another, the children are pressured... more>> to 'do better' and keep getting pushed to work harder, to the point where they inherit their parent's grudges against the other children.

That being said, there were moments when the MC is interacting with her family that felt genuine and nice.

Spoiler

I like the scene where she calls her stepfather dad. It was heartwarming and felt earned. Honestly, the best character in this novel is the stepdad. He's the father everyone wished they had.

[collapse]

As for the romance, its nothing special, the typical 'ML likes her but she doesn't know' yet kind of thing. That being said, he is a CEO (in his twenties but specific age is not known) while she's still 16. So, yeah. <<less

I think I've read quite a lot to rate it.

There are two reason for giving this poor rate.

Because of pe*ophilia and poor proper female representation I don't think this work deserves such a high rating, imo.

There's a scene in which I started screaming internally cause it was literally the cliché excuse people tend to give related to this issue

Spoiler

When ML goes to see his friend because he's worried and says there's a girl he has taken interest in but she's underaged (16).

ML's friend's anwser killed me. Not an issue. In two years she'll be an ADULT. It' the same as saying 'In two years she'll be legal'.

.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

[collapse]

Also female representation is really shitty here. I mean, I understand that the author wanna make villainess really s*upid, mean and greedy but MC's own mother who loves her dearly???? Come on!

She let her daugther down a couple of times and by her actions she's described as a fool and naive woman that makes mistakes all the time. Meanwhile, her stepfather is described as a wise and patient man.

It seems the only decent woman gere is the MC because... duh! She's the protagonist... <<less

I don't know where to start. First of all, this story is beautifully written. I loved everything about it. The build up of romance and the overall plot is very interesting and kept me reading even when I was dead tired. The ending is so beautiful and I cried. That wasn't the only time I cried though.

Spoiler

The rejection of the second ML and death of Shulan...I mean what can I say. I cried like a b****. Especially with the second ML because he was there since the beginning and we actually got to see the sweet moments between MC and him. My heart really hurt for the guy. I felt so bad that even after he was rejected, he kept loving MC and that it was never mentioned that he found someone else later on in his life. Id like to hope that he did.

[collapse]

I also really liked how the ML would show off his relationship with MC after they got together. Also, props to the assistant, Chen Yan, for always being able to recognize when ML is showing off and Tan Qi, the other assistant, for being clueless half the time.

Now lets talk about the ending. Oh my god the ending. I was kind of surprised to read the ending
Spoiler

because usually stories end at the point where they finally get together and settle down with all their problems fixed. However, this novel ended with the extra chapters showing the life of MC and ML after the main story line up until their deaths. It was so sad to read. It was like watching them all grow for so long and then having to also watch their deaths. It was beautiful, but at the same time super ****ing depressing. I mean maybe I was just super attached to the characters in the book cuz that's something I find myself doing a lot (but also I wanna applaud the author for being able to make me so attached). Anyway, just a really great ending even though it was sad.

[collapse]

Also, I wanna say how much I loved that the MC didn't just rely on the ML for everything. She had her own achievements and mostly just relied on herself. ML was there for her as a mentor and someone supporting her when she's down. Every time ML actually helps the MC out, its without the MC knowing while the MC also is working hard to solve her own issues. I also really like how ML would give MC her own space and support her own decisions. He isn't like those other MLs that are super overbearing and has to be involved with everything their FL is doing. I'm not saying that's bad but it is pretty refreshing to read about a ML that isn't like that.

There were many times in the story where family relationships were brought up. I just want to say how great the author was at describing the situations and giving advice.
Spoiler

I don't have the specific quote but I remember two of them that really stuck with me that goes a little like this:1) those that are closest to you are the ones that you can hurt easily without realizing. and 2) You can easily unknowingly neglect those you love/are close to. I really like these two quotes as it really fit well with the plot and also because it fits really well with my life.

[collapse]

Overall, I just really love this novel. I'm gonna wait for like a few weeks till I forget some of it so I can reread. This is definitely one of my top 5 novels.

10/10 definitely recommend. <<less

A very light story about a student studying hard for her exam. I wish there is more interaction between ML and Fl.

First of all, the translation for the first 50 chapters or so aren't as fluid as I'd like.

MC transmigrated as a side character who always caused trouble. She was an orphan her past life, thus she believes that familial relationships are special. It's just that her relationship with her mother is tumultuous, where even her own biological mother won't take her side.

Spoiler

However, while I feel for her situation, I also very much understand her mother's in the first few chapters. She transmigrated into a character who has done nothing but disappoint and make trouble for her family. Gaining her mother's trust again will take time--not just 1 month. However, while MC felt betrayed when her mother didn't take her side (although it was somehow understandable), the author did not explicitly try to mend this anymore (MC had no more thoughts on the mother-daughter relationship).

[collapse]

However, she eventually changes into a very studious high school student with the goal of entering Tsinghua university. She basically studies at every chance she gets. The ML is able to spend time with her because he becomes her mentor. The story is very focused on studying and getting good grades. MC is able to take revenge on those people who led her astray and didn't care for her. She gave them a face slap with her grades. However, the real revenge was carried out by the ML. MC just basically studied...

My opinion on the story:
70% of the text is about studying. 1 chapter of the original is around 3-4 chapters of the translated version. Chapter 294 of the translated is only around chapter 70 of the original. The story is simple and many people probably liked it in China because it reminds them of studying for gaokao, but honestly the story gets very, very repetitive and revolves so much around studying that it gets boring quickly. Once the female protagonist is defeated, the story becomes boring (and there's still 1/3 of the story left). The MC literally does nothing else but study. She only does things to further her studies.

Also, looking at it from a very unbiased point of view... The ML is actually kind of creepy. He approaches a high school girl because he's interested in her... gives her guidance as a mentor because he wants to be close to her. Then he says things like he's raising a kitten who's coming next year (meaning he's raising her who will be turning 18 next year...) If my timeline is correct, he meets her when she is only 16 and he's around 25 or so. It shouldn't be that bad, but it feels like predatory behavior considering he's approaching her with ulterior motives (like it's not just out of the kindness of his heart, but he wants to romance her). It's ONLY okay to the audience and to others because he's the ML who is rich and powerful. If you think about it... Isn't it a bit weird to invite a girl out for dinner while she's in an unfamiliar city when she's underaged, and without her parents knowing?

Anyway, after binging the story and pausing it to reflect... I'm dropping it. It gets really boring with the studying 24/7 theme. Plus the FL-ML relationship is too romanticized for what it actually is. Not really my cup of tea. <<less

I had left my final high-school exam for 10 years but this novel make me remember the burning passion of studying I had at that time. High school exam is so beautiful and so simple because everything have an exact true answer and now in my adulthood I want to go back to that time. Quizes after quizes, exams after exams, is actually such a wonderful thing.

Anyway let's go back to this novel. Its easy to read the MTL, the main characters are good and the face slappings are great.... more>> Let's just ignore the reality of a big boss having time to run around with a little school girl here and there answering maths questions - its just another kind of novel pampering. I love the FL for her steadiness and her one track mind towards her goal. The ML is a good guy, the usual OP one but still pamper FL unconditionally. I actually prefer 2nd ML because he is the same grade as her but alas.

I'd give it a 3.5 but round it up to 4.

It's sweet and simple but it does get dragging. The setting is realistic but the author tends to dwell on certain points too much. At some point, I skipped parts about the educational explanations since it was boring.

MTL is easy to understand.

A simple story featuring the journey of MC growing up. I gave this 4 stars because it's like slice of life and bland.

I applaud the ML for his perseverance. Waiting for a girl to grow up and realize her dreams, it's not easy.
