Ukei Kaito fought a desperate struggle in order to fulfill his role as a summoned hero. He defeated the Demon Lord and saved the very world, only to meet an end filled with betrayal. The companions that he’d trusted throughout his journey betrayed him and killed him by sticking a blade through his chest.

It was then that he swore to himself.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would no longer so rigidly cling to the concept of “faith/believe.”

He swore that, if given another chance, he would dedicate himself to enacting the most atrocious act of revenge possible.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would do things right.

「I’ll kill every single last one of you… I swear it…」

And so, he died, leaving behind not but a series of menacing last words — but his story had yet to end. A voice resounded through his head and informed him that there was more to his fate than what lay beyond the grave.

Definitely not a novel for overly sensitive political correct snowflakes, moral crusaders, and soccer moms. But anyway, this is a story where the protagonist, after being betrayed and mu*dered by his former comrades, gets a second chance when a goddess resets time, but with him retaining his memories from before the reset. Now fueled with a desire for vengeance, he goes after everyone who previously wronged him. It's truly fascinating how the protagonist conducts his revenge. No, it's more than a simple revenge, it's a genocide crusade. He has no... more>> qualms when it comes to killing his enemies in the most sadistic way possible just to satisfy his vengeance. This sounds evil, but after a few chapters you'll get to realize that most of the people who get killed in this story deserve what they had coming to them. Plus, if you're a fan of yanderes, then this is definitely worth reading. <<less

People who rate this novel so low is obviously didn't read more than the first chapter, try to read the whole chapter and you will see the reason behind MC action why he torture his former friend and companion in that world what he lost and what he gain and his determination to payback those who betrayed him

Agreed with most reviewers, pointlessly edgy novel about a teenager (who is really 21 yrs old) acting out his revenge fantasies after being given a 2nd chance at reliving his life. Author is trying to use the shock value to get people interested, but over-does it since every chapter is the OP MC and his accomplice acting out.

Spoiler

MC got betrayed by his companions, framed as a criminal, was a fugitive for 1 yr and finally stabbed in the chest. Not tortured, not quartered, nada. And he enacts revenge by.... doing exactly all those sadistic tortures which no one did to him?

[collapse]

So it's just a sick chuunibyou who becomes a villain. He is NOT an anti-hero.
And that's fine if author wants that to be the point of the story, since there are plenty of novels out there about depraved MCs who become villainous. But it's so awkward and boring to read about an immature kid who is immediately OP and goes on a power fantasy trip-out. It's NOT a seinen novel, but a shounen novel for f**ked up kids.

Very very cliche and poorly executed for a relatively recent (2015) novel.
Late follower of better dark Jap fantasy novels like Re:Zero (2012), Grimgar (2013), Tate no Yuusha (2012). A contemporary better version of this would be "The Dungeon Seeker" (2015), where the revenge is believable and not just a pointless exercise in sadism. <<less

This novel reminds of that other Japanese novel... Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou. This is especially true in that the beginning of the story seems really interesting, but then begins to fall flat. Already, the MC is already beginning to be a push over when it comes to his female companion. It's not extremely blatant, but it's easy to see where it's heading. The whole revenge idea is extremely interesting, but sometimes feels a bit forced when they're happily discussing torture methods together. I'm all... more>> for a touch of insanity and madness in a revenge story, but only when it feels natural. I also dislike that the translators switched to a present tense when the novel was picked up by them due to their personal preference. Makes it awkward to read. Typing on my phone so I won't go into details, but unless this story picks up in the future, it'll end up being anoter mediocre Japanese harem story where the MC is OP but weak to his women. Same old same old, just with a revenge twist.

Also, the levelling and stats in this novel are so boring that towards the end of the first volume, I'd skip over that block of text when I saw it. The fact that it didn't inconvenience me in any way not having that knowledge shows how pointless it is.

EDIT: To the reviewer, GordonLi.. you should have read more carefully because..

Spoiler

They absolutely DID kill his family, classmates, teachers and even other relatives when they summoned him. You're basing your review on incorrect information.

Well, I thought it would be nice for once, but no.

The story starts out very promising, then suddenly our twisted MC decided to buy a s*ave for "partner" or the-s*ave-harem, then another one came, that's when it became generic fantasy harem.

MC just seems to lose his original goal and continue to find more "partner" to fill his fetishes.

Till chapter 30 (was TL till here) this novel doesn't have any progress at all. It progresses as a long Light novel while being a Web novel and most of the chapters are just useless and boring. In the first few chapters it was good (till the revenge) but later on it is just bland and useless chap altogether. One or two interesting things are shown in a few chapters but that's it.
The story is just that MC had a very tragic backstory (a very serious one) and wants... more>> to get revenge for it (The actual reason is shown in later chap so try to hold on to it. It might make you read it.... more?)
(Also reading any JP works is risk cuz no one know when will it be dropped by Translator's) <<less

Unlike other revenge stories, this one doesn't do it in half-hearted measures. Kaito's hatred is real. Yes, he has hatred toward the people who have yet to do all of the things he hates them for, but they have definitely done things worth being eliminated. He goes back to level one but still has a great deal of strength and knowledge from his previous life, which leads his adversaries to initially underestimate him. The flashbacks of his memories really add color to how he became so consumed with hatred.

The female... more>> lead, Minaris/Minnalis, is not all right in the head either. Even so, she is heading toward her goal seriously and patiently. These two are definitely diligent on their training and future plans.

The revenge is creative and fun to read. Although Kaito is no longer heroic, he still has some of the morality associated with one and legitimately struggles with ethical dilemmas as they come up. The first moment he questions his revenge comes as quite a shock to him and triggers some levelheaded character development he never anticipated. This is something that many revenge stories tend to glide over, but it is taken seriously here.

I'm really looking forward to what other crimes his enemies have committed and how he plans to start his revenge against each of them. The adventure, action, drama, comedy, and pure crafty wittiness are well-worth reading this series for. <<less

Basically a story where the hero is betrayed by people he trusted and he goes back in time due to his ability which will let him be reborn every time he dies with his stats adjusted. To people who say stuff like he becomes a edgy emo guy who brainlessly goes to kill in the name of revenge, you would do it too if:

So edgy, my eyes have been bleeding.

lol what, not edgy?

I know what pure revenge is, not this shit. For someone committing revenge on people for the things they haven't done yet on this timeline, this is just bullshit. The number 1 target of his revenge is himself for being ret*rded on his past run (which currently exists), not on the current ppl who haven't yet done anything. He should've gone and ignored them, and do whatever he wanted (and what could they do?). And if they as much as attempt... more>> to do him harm this timeline then I won't even complain if he drugged them and let them get r*ped by dogs. And for being not so edgy, he talk too much. <<less

Aside from the fact that this story has been passed around like between translation groups like a cheap whore, it's a good read.

Just be careful of chapter numbers, especially for volume 2, might want to open links directly from NU. Like don't trust paging/next buttons.

Second chance is like a naive normal LN MC lives a life of the righteous hero, gets betrayed by everyone, and then does revenge stuff. Worth reading.

This story is purely for lovers of torture. MC becomes complete psychopath without a bit of common sense torturing random passerby of the episode.

There is no rhyme or reason or plot other than being a psychopath, revenge is a pretty flimsy excuse for writers sadistic tendencies.

Even from the first episode of torturing princess and letting her live which is extremely s*upid.

Lovely, just lovely. I really like this type of MC who isn't afraid of pain, gore, blood, etc and his hatred is very reasonable. If you read pass the first few chapters the author explains the reason for his hatred:

Spoiler

The people who summoned him literally killed his family and friends when they opened the portal to the fantasy world. They also pushed all the blame of the kingdom's faults onto the hero while killing the one he fell in love with. Then after destroying his hopes, reputation, and using him for their own gain they leave him to die.

[collapse]

so those reviews that say his actions are unreasonable or unrealistic I ask them, "Have you actually read past the first 5 chapters?" The supporting characters are also very interesting, the heroine, the ones who betrayed him, and even the demon king all have good backstories and personality quirks. This novel portrays the darker side of humanity quite well, the author's cynical outlook on life and humans are rather unique and fun to read.

Give it a chance, keep an open mind and don't dismiss it too quickly. READ BETWEEN THE LINES!!! <<less

This is an interesting one. It combines the tropes of summoned hero, "redo, " and betrayal. Throw in revenge created from the "redo" mechanic, and it makes for a very fresh take on this mix of concepts.

The MC's character becomes pretty twisted and is definitely an anti-hero. However, the MC has a clear purpose, is driven, and the writing is decent. This makes it pretty good and I have expectations for it, but the main issue is the speed of releases is glacial so this will likely sit in the... more>> backburner for a good long time.

Potentially a 4/5 or 5/5, but I normally don't rate until there's more chapters than this. <<less

This is the story of a protagonist who figures out how dense he'd been acting before the start of the story. Then after dieing horribly he gets to start over from the beginning after declaring his deep desire for revenge. Thus begins the torture p*rn series Nidome no Yuusha. Follow our young protagonist as he takes on the hobby of burning peoples flesh off and laughing about it. Chopping people's limbs off and laughing about it. Etc etc. The overall writing isn't bad, but it's focus is far too on... more>> the grim side. I actually like anti-heroes, but this is a little extreme. <<less

Just Destroy This World!! That is the feeling I got from read this LN. For you all who exhausted for cliche MC (OP MC, Too-Much-Hesitate MC), this is for you. And more than anything else, it is one of darker revenge stories. Why? 'Cause the MC is really really driven to avenge his former friend. The MC's chara? Well
Spoiler

Think Kratos's Personality from God of War and combine them with A Meticolous MC and apathetic to stranger's doings of Hajime from Arifureta, but much much extreme.

[collapse]
Personally, it's a breather for Kind MC (Usual Japanese LN's MC) and Overly OP MC without purpose (I'm looking at you, Re: Monster!!).

It's probably one of the best revenge stories. MC doesn't become 'good' by some reason he stays quite faithful to his desire - to make enemies suffer. He is not making people to pay the price or die. And this is the best point, this is also reason why people complain that MC is edgy. MC simply hates them, he also has other feelings and you will see them more later. It means that he is trying to make their life as horrible as he can without care how much... more>> time it will take. Hate is unreasonable, and this is what this story is about.

If you think that people should only pay equivalent of what they've done - better skip it. <<less

I've read a nice chunck of the novel (I think 1 tome + a couple of chapters of tome 2), it's good but not my taste. While reading the reviews, some of them make me laugh tho. They basically say that the betrayal he suffered is too soft to seek this huge amount of vengeance. And I clearly see where those people stopped the novel. Between c20 and c30 (I don't remember where precisely) he had a nightmare, or memories of his past, in which we finaly understand the real... more>> reason why he seeks vengeance. I don't want to spoil tho, but if I was in his place, I would have gonne crazy like him.

The reason I stopped is because I don't like the cliche Japanese guy who has absolutely no clue of the feelings of a simple girl while he can negotiate on even ground whit a mastermind blackmarket boss on a psycologique deal... Makes me want to punch him so hard. For the sake of God, if the MC is not interested in romance, then just make him know the feelings of the others and make him ignore them... <<less

It's a great revenge story, where the MC and his companion go out, seeking revenge on all the people they hate. But other than that, that's it

Pros

  1. Vivid imagery. Author goes into great detail on every torture session
  2. Interesting plot set up. MC get's betrayed, dies, goes back in time, and seeks revenge
  3. MC isn't the typical goody-two-shoes found in most Japanese isekai novels, so its a very refreshing take on a character.
Cons

  1. It's a revenge story, and that's it. Nothing else. MC wants revenge, he goes and gets it. Predictable outcome.
  2. Author drags on too long on either torture scenes, or flashback scenes.
I recommend this to you if you like...

  1. Sadistic protagonists, like, really sadistic.
  2. Gore, lots and lots of gore.
  3. Revenge stories.
Don't take my review too seriously, I have only read up to chapter 20, as of writing this review, the translations have gone up to 173, so take everything with a grain of salt, for me in general, I just got bored up to this point and moved on to something else, but if you keep reading it might just be your cup of tea.

First of all I really liked this light novel. It is not only cringy revenge story but much more. I pretty much "marathoned" 80 chapters of this but at some point I started to wonder why I'm not liking it that much anymore. The problem is the current translator. Even though you can kinda understand what is happening, the translation isnt smooth at all. The paragraphs and sentences are written in such way that the more you focus on the text the less sense it makes. I really hope no... more>> one is paying to translate this, the translation is only a bit better than a machine one. <<less

This is nothing more than some torture p*rn massive plot holes from chapter 1.

After 4 years of fighting battles, you would think the MC is good at taking in his surroundings but no it takes him 5 chapters to notice that he has gone back in time.

Now for the revenge part which could have been good, he could have played along with them while setting them up as they did to him but no just starts torturing people and does it in a cryptic way take the princess at the... more>> start never even explains that she's a bit*h who has betrayed him that would be something I would want to make sure they know.

But as many have pointed out this is nothing more than an attempt to be edgy don't recommend this at all. <<less
