A 34-year-old NEET otaku, chased out from his house by his family, found that his life is reaching a dead end. He then recalled that his life could actually have been much better if he had made better choices in the past.

Just when he was at the point of regret, he saw a truck moving at fast speed, and three high schoolers in its path. Mustering all the strength he had, he tried to save them and ended getting run over by the truck, quickly ending his life.

The next time he opened his eyes, he is reincarnated to a world of sword and magic as Rudeus Greyrat. Born to a new world, a new life, Rudeus decided that, “This time, I’ll really live my life to the fullest with no regret!” Thus starts the journey of a man yearning to restart his life.

I wouldn't consider this perfect by any means, but rating it a 4.5/5 (if it was possible) will be more than fair.

It definitely is a slow read, with certain volumes where things seems to not be happening, but the build up of the characters and the world building is definitely worth the wait.

Having just completed it, I wouldn't say the ending is anything special, but it is still a decent ending for the long journey that we have gone through together on this 26 volumes.

I'll definitely look back upon this... more>> in the future with fond memories. <<less

I have a mixed feeling about this story, I think this is my first Tensei story and enjoy it much, but the excess drama and too deep plot throw me off.... thus drifting out from my preference zone

I've never read any story in the anime medium that struck such a chord with me, I love the characters, I love the concept, I love the slow pace and the focus of the writing as a biographical work, something you rarely see in anime.

This novel in fact kind of ruined other genres for me, this isn't about being "the strongest", or a out finding some mcgufin or collecting all the girl-pokemon for the harem, it's the honest to God rendition of the life of an individual seeking redemption for... more>> his wasted life, I don't think I've ever read something quite as good and I'm thankful that I got the chance to do so. <<less

It's a great novel. Had great potential.

There were some missed opportunities to build up more for the characters, plot, world development and side stories.

The harem was light, not too suffocating. The female characters' personas were well designed.

... more>> The MC is a bit of a let down. He's supposed to do better, as the title suggest. But he fell from home grace as the story progress. He has a lot of potential designed on him.

Character build up were well done. Sadly, they're like fireworks that barely sparkled. Everything good is at the development.

The author could've done more. Seriously. There are holes that could make do with fillers. There could've been more content. Prior to the ending, there's a big potential development that's missing.

But the ending was a surprise. It doesn't seem to be planned out. More like, a sudden inspiration. It feels like the story started and was developed and designed at the idea of the ending.

Overall. I have some regrets.

Loved the story.

I appreciate the characters.

Had more possibilities that could be applied in the novel. *Sigh <<less

Personally I didntlike it much becauseit felt like the first part (s) of the story were missing reading it. Also I dont like depressing based stories much which was kind of the whole intro so far, him looking for his mom from an refugee incident with his background/development skipped. Also I didnt like how the characters looked reading/seeing yhe words/images. The book still was nicely written justnot for my taste.

Very entertaining series, so much so that I was able to read 12 volumes back to back. Well, to be more specific, the first volume is really great with an amazing ending and lots of promise, second novel is good, third to sixth novels are kind of dull, seventh novel was really really good, 8-11 pretty good, 12 another amazing entry. So the best volumes are 1, 7 and 12.

Then volume 13 was officially released and I wasn't so impressed, the story has kind of degenerated. Without being specific, let's... more>> just say he is enjoying the romance a little too much. To be more specific:

Spoiler

It would be nice if Rudy would think about something else other than s*x.

Anyway, I don't actually know when I will be resuming reading this, because v13 has put me off, but I'm sure I will read the whole series eventually. To fully enjoy this series, you will need to be able to overlook some things and just laugh them off, if you go in with an overly-serious mindset you will not enjoy the series, just roll with the punches. <<less

One of my favorites novels. Amazing character development all around. I've read it a long time ago so I don't have any fresh thoughts on it, basically it's good go read it. It peaks when the protagonist becomes an adult, so don't go dropping it because you don't like his personality as a child. As for why there's so many bad reviews here, I think it's trolls, the WN has a lot more reviews and it's way more positive (LN and WN are pretty much the same btw).

TL;DR

If you like good world building, and learning things at the same pace as the protagonist and do don't mind that action isn't a main focus of the story go ahead and read it.

Full review

Moshoku Tensei is one of my favourite Isekais I've ever read. Most people think that Isekai genre needs to be action heavy, with a lot of intense battles. But who ever said that Isekai had to be action heavy? Moshoku Tensei is an example of that, the action isn't a highlight of the series (at least... more>> at V5 it isn't). Instead it focuses on the characters, and the world building. Another aspect is how "normal" Rudeus is when faced with the brutality of the situation compared to other Isekai protagonists.

The scenario I'm referring to is when Rudeus staged a fake kidnapping to mellow up Eris, so she would warm up to him as a teacher the kidnappers actually wanted to kill Eris. Ghislane saved them, but she decapitated the people who tried to harm Eris. Rudeus understandably was in shock, because blood was spilling out of the bodies of the decapitated men, and he was covered in blood clearly in shock. Other Isekai protagnoists would have went along with as if it doesn't even surprise them, or would go an kill someone in a literal bloody spectacle and killed the men themselves.

Rudeus is overpowered yes, but that's only because he has the mental age of a fourty year old. Slyphie was also able to cast magic without incantation this shows that Rudeus isn't special, or too overpowered in some way. His fear of taking a life (which is a very normal and understandable fear) is also limiting him when he has to fight against other people.

It took 3 volumes for Rudeus, Ruijerd, and Eris to reach Fittoa. And at this point I was getting pretty sick of Eris, and Ruijerd. We've been stuck with the same team for 3 volumes. Volume 6 - 7 spoilers ahoy:
Spoiler

Then the second Ruijerd got the two of them to Fittoa he just up and left. Eris, and Rudeus slept together on the same night. Because Eris found out that everyone in her family died. Her father, mother, and grandfather. Eris wanted Rudeus to be her family, hence why she slept with him. The subsequent chapters talked about how she felt like she was dead weight to Rudeus, she thought that Rudeus had a very hard time in the Demon Continent, because of her. Just before the trio arrived at Fittoa, they encountered Dragon God Orsted, who fatally wounded Rudeus, but healed him after his companian said it would be better if he lived. It was there she Eris started to spiral downards, into thinking that she was dead weight, and Rudeus nearly died because he tried to protect her.

Resolving to not be deadweight, she left with Ghislane in the morning after she slept with Rudeus. This is where Rudeus' perspective comes in. He thought he was being too clingy, and that's why Eris left him. He left Fittoa to search for Zenith, his mom. Because he didn't want to stay in Fittoa because it reminded Rudeus of Eris. This is how Rudeus was affected: A girl Sara was in love with him, and she offered herself to him. Rudeus was all for it, but then his little man wouldn't come up during the call to arms. He now has ED.

Amazing Writing, Story Telling, And World Building. Once You start reading the novel you wouldn't be able to put it back till the end so be cautious and read it if you really have that much time to spend; still, it was worth the time it takes to read.

now just looking forward to anime adpation.

I would give it 3, 5 stars, but the system doesn't allow it. Mushoku Tensei seems to have perpetuated a lot of the Isekai tropes we see in novels, manga and anime today, and at the same time it uses tropes from anime and manga works. While this means it doesn't have much novelty to offer, the characters are fairly well developed, and the twist and ending were satisfactory to me.

The novel is told mainly from Rudeus POV, which allows for a mix of good action sequences and comedy, and... more>> to me that is the most important thing in Mushoku Tensei, that puts it one step ahead of a lot of other Isekai LNs. It's very entertaining to read for the most part. While I wouldn't say it is the best LN I've read, I can recommend it if you want a long and generally fun Light Novel to read for a while. <<less

Mushoku Tensei feels like my crack recently. I've been trying to find anything remotely similar to it in an effort to satisfy my Isekai rush.

So what makes Mushoku Tensei good? Well to me it's the aspect of the lifestory. You see the growth of MC from a social degenerate to a respectable person by the end. It's very satisfying to see how the world-building snaps into place, along with the growth of characters we see across tens of volumes. Although the story is focused on Rudeus (the MC), it also... more>> focuses on the growth of the things that Rudeus loves. He also isn't OP either which is another plus. And unlike most of the Harem/Romance series I've seen, he also isn't blueballed by his love interests. He isn't perfect either as he is seen to perv even in his later years. <<less

Personally, I love the novel having reading it from start to finish twice (and having multiple reading by bits). I do understand if people dont like some parts of the novel as it is made that way. Its closely related to the main theme of the novel which I'll explain later.

Mushoku Tensei is slightly different from a lot of isekai novel. Quoting from a previous review, "Mushoku Tensei is not Mushoku Tensei without the entire journey, from beginning to the end" (Level1Pixel, 2019). Mushoku Tensei as a story doesnt provide... more>> you with adventures and amazing fights all the time but rather, takes you on a slow journey.

I understand if some doesnt like this and thats fine. It can go a bit too slow for some that expects it to go differently. Unlike most isekai novel now that puts you in a thrilling fights, funny comedy, sweet love all the time, this novel, although does provide you with those stuff, does not have that all the time. There are some chapters that just tell on how he live his everyday life, normal routines, meeting friends and stuff without anything special happening. To be fair, if you're not interested with normal life, it'll be really boring. But that brings it to the main theme as well.

I never like manga, anime, or novels that depicts too much pe*vertedness (in fact, I dropped some of the best novels with great concepts due to that). I dont mind it with this novel though. You can call me biased, but I do think his pe*vertedness is just how his character is. The author doesnt force the perversion of the MC but just rolls with it. Which, again, ties to the main theme of the novel.

Of course there's negative stuff such as some bad character development, some bad character introduction, and weird story progression. Though, even though I say its bad, it makes sense when you keep the main theme of the novel in mind. If you are repulsed with these kinds of stuff, its really understandable if you dont like or even hate the novel. The novel is just like that.

The main theme? Well, if I were to sum up the whole novel in a short paragraph, the novel is about a guy that want to live his life to the fullest, and never wanting to live a life full of regrets... again.

Mushoku Tensei is a sort of lifestory. Sometimes its boring, sometimes its exciting. Sometimes your hard work pays and sometimes it doesnt. Sometime you're the best and sometimes you're the worst. Sometimes you have to make a life decision. Sometimes, things doesnt go as planned and sometimes it does. Sometimes your friend changes after a few years not meeting them. Sometimes, things you have to do changes due to circumstances. Thats just how life is. And thats why I love this novel. As said, its the whole journey, from beginning to the end.

P.S. If you cant handle reality, I actually recommend you not to read this as it hits quite hard. But if you can handle quite a bit, then this novel is not bad of a journey to take on.

P.S.S. The first few volumes is mostly quite fun though, do have a look. <<less

Though the main character is a bit too lecherous, his struggle was real.

I mean, his fears were always there and he was human enough to admit he was not perfect, but always searched for the best possible solution for him and those he loved.

A good novel to pass the time, with romance, angst and funny moments everywhere.

Well translated and great to read.

Thanks to the author and translators for their work.
