BL
“I wasn’t born a lucky person, I’m just too strong.”

On his way home late in the evening, Xiao Li found a letter asking for help and inexplicably came to an unknown place. He had to finish the task given before he could succeed in returning to reality. In the legendary haunted school, Xiao Li looked at his companions’ task of ‘survive until dawn’ and then looked at the tasks displayed in his book:

Tell me your name.

Tell me what you like.

Kiss me.

Xiao Li: ????

He was very confused and then refused.

For someone who loves horror for the sake of horror, I think this is not your troupe.

I have read many horror survival games novels and this one is not bad. Not bad because it's not really horror-ish, which I don't mind. Plus, I really enjoyed this novel, so five stars it is.

For the story itself, the only arc which made me feel the horror vibe is the first arc. The rest is actually scary if you think deeply, but somehow I don't feel scared (?). I think it's because MC... more>> and ML's interactions xD.

Despite the description, each arc are interesting and NOT ONLY focus on MC and ML. There are missions to accomplish and mystery to crack. It's not Sherlock Home level 'tho. Mediocre, but still passable. Honestly, there're some unlimited flow novels out there which arcs only for the sake of MC and ML and that's really annoying. The plots of each arc is tailored for them, not for the mission. After reading those, this one can be considered a good read (before, maybe this one was only so-so).

Anyway, I don't say this novel is great or a gem or etc. If unlimited flow is your troupe, then you can give this one a read. If you are scared but you can pass the first arc, then the rest is not scarrier than that (it's subjective, 'tho). <<less

4/5 (4 not 5, this story is not hot enough for a 5, misclick) A little dragged out tbh, should've ended around 200 chapters max. Still, it's enjoyable but the slow burn was really slow.

Spoiler

Slow to the point where it was around ch240 when they finally got together. The romance was kind of ambiguous one-sidedly from the ML but the specks of love building from our MC is there.

[collapse]

The MC is fearless and his mind is crazily overpowered. Some of the instances I couldn't understand and honestly don't know how the f*ck you would complete them without him. He's not emotionless or a robot as some would say as he still has them. He just doesn't show them as often as most of the novel is literally figuring out shit. He's kind towards the ghosts, a bit of a ditsy, cute, smart and fearless. I enjoy him as a character a lot actually. The ML is pe*verted but never really acts up on it so it's all verbal. I really don't understand how he fell in love with our MC but I guess that's what happens when you're—

deprived of any social interaction/kindness. Latching onto anything that gives you warmth.

[collapse]
On the bright side, he probably eventually fell in love with the MC beyond the shallow level.

What carries this story is the relationship the MC has with his ghost family. I love that he falls them family and considers them as such, it's sweet. They help him and although some think he's an ass (and sometimes he is, although unknowingly) they all love him and he loves them too. I especially like the girl, she's my favourite and I love how she loves flowers and adores him. Really gives off that sibling comfort vibes. The ghosts adds the relief to the story which helps it not make it all about figuring stuff out (which would eventually be boring as shit).

The instances are also very well-done imo. I don't know how the author thinks of the solutions to be honest.

Overall great story. I really wished we got more of the—
Spoiler

whole godhood thing. It's rare to get your protagonist to become god while making it good. I wished we got to see what happened after everyone he knows does and it's simply him (including his husband). I know he choose to become a good to protect reality but what happens when the world evolves. What happens when all the old reincarnators dies? Do they still know his story and his many names? It's so interesting to go in-depth about this but we don't get it.

[collapse]
Still, it was a good finale. Enjoyable read, a little long but if you have the time this is an okay story. <<less

I love so much this story and the translations is nice.

I like how Xiao Li's desire to become a god, it rarely to find danmei which the MC want to be more stronger, usually the MC want the peaceful life and detach his power or something like that in the end.

Oh yeah (i think this is a little spoiler), but I like how the MC mostly doesn't rely to ML to fix his problem, and I think it's just in the end of story (aside from take care his food... more>> in instance worlds) <<less

This book gives a fresh turn from other books of the same genre. Instead of overpowering and vanquishing the ghosts, what if the MC overpowered the ghosts and started collecting the ghosts like P*kem*n? (Gosh, I hope I just used that phrase correctly)

Plot-wise this book started out pretty meh? The MC feels like an expressionless robot, but believe me, he just grows on you, sort of. The quality of the book and my interest picks up starting on the second arc. But still, by no means is this a... more>> masterpiece.

If you are looking for great mystery novel, or just great plotlines in general, look elsewhere. As far as plot lines and great mysteries go, this one's mediocre at best. If you are looking for romance, look elsewhere. There's romance there, sure, but it's just barely there and boy, it's so slow-burn my instant ramen would take 3 years to cook if I used the romance in this novel to cook it. The romance is borderline creepy, and it might not even be everyone's cup of tea. I'm a firm believer of don't like don't read, so tread carefully.

Personally, my only drive to read this is just for the amus**ent of it. The first half was really hilarious, and honestly I was pretty creeped out reading the first half. It's just another problem of a novel being far too long than necessary. The second half was hard to get through, and at this point I'm honestly only just reading for the sake of completion. By the second half, the horror quality is lessened, mystery quality practically non-existent. But hey, at least the romance starts to really burn there. The problem is, most of the plotlines or the side characters aren't all really that memorable. I tend to forget all about them after the arc is finished. I was binge reading this, so this definitely isn't my memory problem. In terms of character building and world building, this book clearly still needs plenty of work.

I had quite a bit of fun reading this. I would recommend this if you want to do some easy and light reading. The comedy is great and there aren't any heavy plot twists. You can also be assured that whatever happens, it's all gonna be alright because the MC is super OP, if not then ML will come to the rescue. If you want something that challenges your brain though, maybe not. Kudos to the translator for translating all those chapters! <<less

It's Funny to see people keep triggered and giving low rating because ML have yandere nature/characteristics...

But the truth in this story is ML Yandere things is only happend in his mind, he never actually did it in the real world because he knew that what he was thinking about was wrong.

Even when they are dating, he never do yandere things and when he jealous he not doing something like yandere things too, he only just gave a cold glance like another ordinary ML.

He also never did irrational things to people... more>> he was jealous of or forbade MC from seeing people who were jealous.

Until the end MC still have many friends and ML never have problem with that. He might say he a little jealous, but after one hug he will smile right away. So until the end I don't find yandere things that all people complaining... So don't trust the review about yandere things that you read here...

Spoiler

Note : ML yandere character is not something that comes out randomly, it all has reasons and backgrounds.

He was a god in charge of guarding the frontier in the abyss of darkness, previously he had no chance to get out of there and could only come out once in tens or even hundreds of years after.

After another gods become more stronger, He Finally can come out more often and only needed to go to the abyss of darkness once in a while

so it is not something irrational if ML has a slightly distorted mind, the most important thing is that he knows it is wrong and can hurt people he love, thats why he endure his vices remain only in his mind, because he knows he really loves MC and does not want to hurt him

THIS IS A HONEST REVIEW.

BEFORE. I have read the first half of the story and due to the influence of the reviews (I tend to read reviews first before reading the story) I found it bad and boring, that's why you should never read reviews, it's a bad influence when you want to have a good read.

NOW. I happen to stumble upon the story again and decided to read it again and give it a chance. It's been a year since I have read the first half of the book,... more>> and I foegot some of those negative reviews, so why not give it a try? AND GODDAMN IT! IT'S SO GOOD. This novel is like an old-age wine, it only gets better with time. Now I really can't undeestand the bad reviews🤣

And about the story, it a combination of Horror-comedy and with a very slow paced romance.

Spoiler

From what I remember, it's within chapter 190+ where their relationship really bloomed

[collapse]

And to all people who keep on saying how annoying the ML is, get out! It's just his way of expressing his affection since he can't really be together with MC (together means being beside MC, can't touch MC, and can't kiss MC), so it comes out somewhat excessive because that's the only thing he could do. To speak/convey. And to all people who said he's aggressive and a yandere, well it's not like he acted on it, duh! So piss off, negative reviews! <<less

i love the ghost. Specially the mic ghost (fan gize?? I think) he is the most sane one ever oh and although the ghosts dislikes xiao li because he abuses (?) them they still helped him lol (like a typical tsundere)

I also love the god of lies (and kinda ship lies and death... im weird yikes)

Im glad xiao li doesnt hate shen chenzi's possessiveness and want a "crazy love" where the lover will only look at xiao li only.

i love when they played at the abyss hohoho I can imagine it OOPS

Y'know at first I was super hyped up in reading this story because I happen to love love these types of mystery slash survival genre. But the interest fizzled up around the 130 or so chapters because it doesn't give us any substantial interactions and developments.

Other reviewers have talked about the characters' problems, so I will highlight the stories' structure itself. Novels of this genre usually have a formula of instance-rest-instance-rest and even though most development happens during the instances, moments of respite are still very much fleshed up. Giving... more>> us readers some breathing rooms and cementing the idea that yes, these characters did their best and these times are what they deserved. This also gives us a blank canvas of anticipation of what's to come next.

Yet, IWBL totally ditched that building block and goes through this instance-instance-instance, the time MC spent in real life are most times nary but one chapter. This also cuts back a lot on our chances to know him better. Yes he is cold and indifferent, but there's no further description of it except for apparent child neglect?? And it even felt paper thin as a reason because we only see it in one or two chapters before we're brought back to instances.

Over time, hype is thinning down bcs we were not given time to digest what just happened. Every arc felt the same, follows the same rule of MC totally killing it and side characters being in awe. You can literally skip a few arcs and wont miss much. Just... if you still wanna read this then that's totally okay, hope you're having a better time than I did. <<less

Edit. I tried it 2nd time... nope. I wish we can edit stars rating because I would give this 1.

I started reading because of the horror concept. Going into instances to fight ghosts seem interesting. However I couldn't make it through even the early chapters.

The MC is.... really bland? He seems like robot with no emotion. Normally you would expect people to freak out a bit when they suddenly get toss into a world with ghosts that can kill you. The MC gave no reactions at and, no internal... more>> monologue for you to understand what he's thinking. There are plenty of calm or logical protags, which are fine, but MC just felt "empty." He barely has internal dialogue for you to understand what he is thinking

You don't even get the logical steps to how he arrive at the answer. He just wander around trying to find clues like a robot and it speed forward to the right answer. Oh, or if he need help the ML will conveniently show up like ghost and bail him out.

MC just accept the situation without any question about wtf are they fighting ghosts. I would like to get explainations of what these games are and why they are trying to fight ghosts in the 1st few chapters at least to establish a setting.

The ML from what I've seen is a creep who make unnecessary s*xual comments constantly to MC as the book. There's even hint that he touched MC while he slept right after the 1st instance when MC came home like?? I barely met the ML and I thinks he's annoying already.

There's potential for setting but author didn't put enough effort setting it up. Maybe I'll give it a try later but I'm going to leave it DNF for now <<less

I really love this novel! MC is smart and strong. People seem to think that ML solves everything for him when in fact ML doesn't normally do anything. He stays as the book and occasionally comes into the instance as another participant in order to see MC. ML does not actually do anything, MC uses his brain and his ghosts to solve instances. MC was able to get his first ghosts at the beginning by helping them while completing the instance. They have since then used their strength to help... more>> him deal with other ghosts. He also occasionally tames other ghosts himself. Tan li is his strongest ghost currently and his number one ghost helper. Yes I'm aware that Xiao li can be categorized as op, but it's not illogical. A large part of it is his ghosts helping him capture troublesome ghosts and him using his wits. I will agree that ML weirds me out but he hasn't really made any progress so far or done anything too weird. And Xiao li is far from liking him at this point. The interactions in this book are really fun! I would recommend it but feel free to read other reviews :) I am currently up to date on the released chapters. <<less

I'm currently rereading this beforehand I stop at c146 which was the latest chapter at that time.

To start with I would love to give a rating of 5 star because I absolutely adore the story. But maybe its the ageing but I found the book problematic than I used to.

Reading Experience:

Noticing that the translation is completed, I decided to read it in the month of November. I recalled how much I enjoy it previously and some scene I loved. So my expectation was crazy high. So when I first read... more>> it I was confused since it wasn't the scene I imagine it to be (MC ' dressed as a girl' in the toilet looking at the mirror') After several chapters I thought I had the wrong book. That all this time I was delusional. So I lose my previous excitement and simply read it for the sake of it. Until Blood Mary and I immediately knew I was right.

After the rollercoaster ride of emotion that exist for about 50 chapters I finally manage to enjoy myself for a while. Until he appear... its been 2-3 weels since I started reading this so you can tell how much I'm forcing myself to read it.

Story line:

Being one of the book that make me realise I love Horror- comedy genre. The storyline isn't any unique compared to other horror instances plot. Its just the character that makes it soo good and a certain character that destroy everything. The pacing is great for some arc but overall the only person who solves it is the MC. They set it so that the difficulty is high that I personally can't see how other people even survive before they meet MC. Since the genre is Shounen Ai and not Romance or Yaoi. I had some expectation that MC would be as*xual or at the very least the end note would be him being single or ' I love you too'. So far it isnt.

Characters:

MC: Is a lonely introvert boy who just want someone to love him unconditionally. He is a 'kind' human who once he is curious about something he would do anything so solve it. I love how he collects ghost like people collect pokemon. He is very Op that makes no sense. Why is he so smart? Why does he seem so dumb when he is confuse when people say he bullying the ghost. The title said he wasn't born lucky but how is he not lucky? I haven't complete it but so far I can see him only liking ML because ML is obsessed with him. Like he always wants someone too. I can't see how the romance would develop another way.

ML: A pe*verted useless, stalkerish awful of a ML. And I like stalker yandere fictional character. But personally I would go to this world regardless if ML is a god and kill him. Everytime he appear in the story even more as a human it ruins the book. He doesn't do anything and when he does it makes me want to drop the novel. The fact he's the ML makes MC dropped down a star too.

Ghost: The characters that makes this novel awesome and hilarious. Especially the 'authors note'. It is quiet sad when ghost that followed MC doesn't appear as much or even forgotten like the ghost that enter his phone. Pen ghost. 'Am I beautiful?' ghost and all sort.

Summary:

Good: The comedy, ghost.

Bad: ML, the Yellow Book. Romance plot.

Review might change for the better or worse if I manage to continue reading it... <<less

I saw a lot of people leaving reviews saying that this story is not their cup of tea or that the story is bland, such things. I understand as different people have different preferences.

Personally, Xiao Li (MC) reminds me of Ayanokoji from Classroom of the Elite and I do enjoy reading/watching these kinds of protagonists.

To be honest, Xiao Li is one of my favorite danmei protagonists to the many danmei stories I've ever read. When reading novels, I'm not very adamant about logics or whatnot so I guess I enjoyed... more>> reading Xiao Li being illogically overpowered.

Spoiler

I don't know if you can consider this as a spoiler. I think that the key point (?) of this novel, the MC's characteristics, the reason why ML could only appear intermittently, and MC's personal feelings-- was shown towards the last few arcs (?) of the novel.

[collapse]

I agree that ML is such a pe*verted stalker, yes, and it's really creepy when he takes advantage of Xiao Li when the latter was asleep. But what matters to me is that towards the end, their relationship is consensual and towards the things that needed mutual consent-- the ML has Xiao Li's consent for it.

After all, what I'm thinking is that-- that is their life, they are the ones experiencing what they are experiencing, if they consented to it, then I won't care much. I'm just a reader of their story. <<less

For me, at first I judged that this novel wasn't that scary when I was reading it. It has an OP MC with an OP ML, cute and funny interactions with the ghosts. But I truly realized how scary and how big of an effect it has on me when I got nightmares for a couple nights in a row while reading it, with one time where I ended up waking up screaming cause something fell in my room and I single-mindedly believed it was a ghost who did it.

At... more>> the first few parts of the story, the MC's luck is so high that you'd think the title is born contradictorily, but as you go on, it's not as evident.

It's a funny comedy-horror with a MC that tortures ghosts (when they try to scare him haha). ML is possessive and can be creepy but it's all in his mind and urges. He completely and utterly respects MC and is very very scared of doing something that will scare MC or push him away.

MC only starts being interesting around 50 (?) chapters in, a few arcs in at least. Its only then that he really starts to show how he clears instances without any of ML's help and starts tormenting... more>> all sorts of ghosts. He's incredibly smart and calm, being able to find out the real truth of each instance.

MC's resistance to ML starts getting annoying tho, especially since they only get together (when MC finally accepts him) 200+ chapters in. ML is also basically a furniture for most of the novel, but at least he's around? Hahahahaha <<less

‘I wasn’t born lucky’- what a lie lmao. If any side characters try to pull the stuff that MC does in this novel they’d be 100% dead

I swear I was there for the ghosts the MC had rather than the MC himself bc frankly he was a boring MC to follow. The ghosts at least have something while the MC just??? Goes around and does ‘dAnGErouS’ things that aren’t really dangerous bc he’s lucky that he’s the MC lol.

I get that it’s supposed to be funny and charming or whatever... more>> but it’s really not. It was alright for the first few arcs but got boring fast after you start to realize how if anyone else tried this they’d be dead and how strong the MCs plot armor was. the ML is also a creep who crosses off my pet peeve of obsessive, stalkery and annoying ML. He’s just creepy lol <<less

Disclaimer about the translations that will not impact the ratings but has to be said for reader experience;
Spoiler

The translation team refuses to correct the mistakes even when it's been point out by readers (comments pointing out mistakes dates even back to 1yr+). Some of those mistakes interferes with reading experience and it's disappointing to see that they don't care. Especially if you consider there's about 7+ mistakes minimum per chapter. Y'know, at least fix the big ones...

It since has improved a lot over 100chapters down to only a couple.

[collapse]
This, at least for the first 100chapters, is definitely no romance novel. Heck, ML hardly even shows up for the 100chapters and when he does, he's being a creep.
Completely relate to negative comments about ML being a creeper and coming on too strong, which he does.
ML is the stereotypical big wig, the crème de la crème, always there ready to spoil MC. *yawn* No individuality, really. All he's got is obsession for MC and disinterest in the whole world except for MC.
ML is pretentiously keeping the front of a respectful gentleman for MC when he's awake, he would make wild suggestions but still ask if it's okay but goes ahead and does it anyways when MC falls asleep. (What's wrong with you all loving this, srsly??! The main characters just lacks depth all around)

So for ML alone, the story already deserves no more than 2 stars. His behaviour at least for the last 133chapters have not changed for the better.

MC shows no interest yet ML feverishly pursues without shame. Sexually harassing MC 24/7 when he's trying to do his thing or just trying to be at peace. ML gives him basically 3 options; 1. Love him. 2. Love him more. 3. Love him the most. Wouldn't take no for an answer and would eradicate all chances of having rivals. (Warned MC not to love anybody, gives the scare of their lives if they become too physically intimate with MC)

Author definitely has to be a newbie at attempting themes like puzzle solving because they're coldly singling out the readers on all events. Both readers and side characters clueless to what's going on in the instances while MC is solving everything on his own. The disconnection keeps reoccurring. Horror level is a meh, you can read it just fine in the dark kind of spooky, comedy or no comedy.
Spoiler

Idk why author chose to make MC go Mr. International when all they did was bringing in foreign participants but everything is strictly bound to national stereotypes; chinese NPCs, location and language.

There has even been mistakes of foreigner handing out chinese talismans (translation specific it was a "stack of exorcism paper". Those who are more invested into horror probably know that westerners use more trinkets and blessed items (or directly holy water) than exorcism papers. Weirdly, there has been an exorcist in the first global instance that used holy water, so IDK what prompts author to have a set up with a black dude equipped with "exorcism papers" and not either shaman doctor trinkets or holy water...

Also, author did mention translations for the foreign participants here and there, but seem to neglect that aspect later on and the point of having foreign participants just felt like extra decoration.

Since the entire story evolves more or less only about instances and horror with a kick of comedy, having a global setting yet restricting it only to national spec is nonsensical. They wouldn't even bring you to the other side of the northern hemisphere... lest to say a tropical setting or desert area in the southern hemisphere.... Author has briefly mentioned that one of the passer-by participants had experienced a jungle setting so don't tell me they didn't know. And that was even way before global instances opened up.
All in all, it just falls under what MC is most comfortable with.

Most importantly, the MC lacks character development and the real life is also being heavily disregarded. There was a weird build up in his family relationship but he smoothly exits it without an issue. MC seems fearless of entities and his general characteristics other than withdrawn is lukewarm gentleness towards the ghosts he's keeping.
There's ofc this bs mentality of throwing in mental illnesses that aren't actually mental illnesses into the set up to idk, evoke sympathy for MC?? The socially withdrawn bit, I can get behind, but to bring up occasionally that he's a germaphobe or got OCD is... *sigh* I wish authors could stop doing that. Everybody would wash their hands if it's full of blood and dirt, okay?

[collapse]

The entities and their interactions with MC is probably so far the only saving grace. The comedic part brings a smile to your face and a small chuckle from time to time.
Praying for the rest of the problem to solve itself as the story progresses.

This was a very creative novel. Each instance is solved a bit magically in my opinion, but they're so rich and interesting to read that I don't really mind as much as I usually would.

I love how all the characters and ghosts come together in the end to defend reality - it really ties everything together (though like the solution to the instances, it was resolved a bit too easily based merely on how awesome Sherlock is). The one thing the novel never resolved, which I really wish it would,... more>> is the relationship between Sherlock and his father. I really feel the father could have had a bit of a redemption arc, but that never happened. I also felt a bit sad for the step brother who wanted to get closer to Sherlock, but was always repelled until he could only become' a black fan.

I don't particularly like the relationship between Sherlock and the other main character in this book - it's very obsessive and doesn't seem healthy. However, comments on the translation site made a really good point about how some people have different need in a relationship. If both parties know about and agree to the unhealthy parts of their relationship, it's not really unhealthy for them. A mutually consented kink is safe, a one-sided kink can often be a crime. Also, I personally thought it was badass how Sherlock didn't really need his partner to save the day. He's like a cat - independent and prickly. Maybe that's why he loves them so much. I really hated Sherlock's apathy in the beginning, but I came around to him by the end. He's just apathetic because he's afraid to invest too much of himself into anything, because doing that leaves him open to getting hurt or disappointed. He must also have a very thrill-seeking personality, where it takes a lot to get him excited.

In the end, this was a sweet story about an apathetic thrill-seeker who ends up finding the perfect, obsessive mate he can feel safe opening himself up to. There are definitely plot holes and imperfections in the story and the translation, but it was a great piece of entertainment. <<less
