While this novel has an interesting concept it failed to work because of the authors lackluster writing ability.

It reads more like a textbook from college, you know the ones where you wonder how can it be this boring.

MC: Mage who returned in a body 4K years later. Pretty shallow, novel reads like a diary so can’t say more.

... more>> Other characters: Nothing really going on for others expect 1 dimensional inserts that basically offer nothing to the story.

I suggest you skip the 5 star reviews before mine since they only read the manhwa which is vastly different since one is pictures while the other is purely text. Idiots that don’t even criticize a novel shouldn’t be trusted.

I still suggest you give it a shot since my tastes and opinions could differ, just don’t expect much so the disappointment won’t be huge. <<less

The translator here! I'm not that great at writing reviews so here's my verdict.

This novel is for anyone who likes a fast-paced fantasy story with a strong MC. I recommend giving it a go whether you came from the manhwa or not!

What is a good novel, this is a question I ask myself repeatedly when I write and when I read. Some say it's the story and the plot, and other people say the ending and the characters. The Great Mage Returns After 4000 years is the same old overpowered main character who reincarnates into a body of someone who was useless. How many stories have I stumbled upon that have the same themes? Nonetheless, maybe the characters make up for it? Oh wait, the main character is emotionless, unable to... more>> produce any feelings other than "Annoying." or "I can get stronger." And don't get me started on the side characters who either have two purposes of making the main character look good, or make themselves look like a**holes.

Let me ask you this, what does this novel intend to do. Have some fun? Show off a character who builds up their strength and show off? Oh, wait, he's already a seventh circle mage by the 54th chapter, what about the weak to strong improvement? What happened to the showing off? This novel is useless even in the parts where it's supposed to excel in. It's not fun, it's not interesting, and it sure as hell was made for money. All you will get from this novel is a false feeling of satisfaction that will instantly disappear once you realize you wasted your time with this garbage.

TLDR: I do not recommend this novel at all, go read something better, and save your time.

Note: Also, don't any of you guys say his inhuman emotions are because he was stuck alone for ten thousand years, it's just a s*upid plot point the author made so that you guys shut up and won't criticize his shitty work, trust me, I have done the same before and regret it immensely. <<less

To anyone who come here after reading the manhwa,

Firstly, it's different from the manhwa. Story, MC character, etc. If the MC in manhwa feels like juvenille rascal with obvious harem, and power of friendship, well not in the novel. In novel, the MC feels like a man who has achieved the peak of magic. Calm, composed, decisive, with out of the world demeneur. Feels like old people, not h**ny teenager.

Secondly, in the story he doesn't bring that girl to training and no power of friendship. So if you want... more>> to read the novel, start from the first chapter.

Personally, I like the novel more than the manhwa. Too many cliche in manhwa. <<less

This novel is okay. Just turn your brain off, wow very easy to get into.

In my opinion, it gets four stars.

However, I subtracted one star for a very specific reason.

... more>> The translator inserts all these dumb, s*upid comments in the chapters. I'm not sure if they continue this habit later on, but wow please stop. Please get help, please stop. I am pleading. Do you think the author of this work would want his novel to have commentary in between all this text and thus breaking immersion?

Translation otherwise is nice and smooth to read.

Translator's notes mid-chapters are a serious issue. If you know a translator or someone who has been affected by this, please call 1-800-GET-HELP. <<less

Doing a quick review before going deeper, for those with haste

The story has 2 seasons so far
The first is the Demigods arc.

The story seems rushed, but taking into account there may be several seasons to come, you can ignore it, and treat season one simply as a prologue.

... more>> Now 3 things:

First: There is no harem

Only a few friends that readers wished were love interests. And there's no romance.

Second: It's good?

It's ok... it's not bad, and it's not tr*sh.

It's not good because the characters and the plot are dumb. Like, they are not dumb because they do s*upid things, they are dumb because the author is dumb, and this reflects on them.

Third: Is it worth reading?

I suppose so...

It doesn't have something fatal that usually ruins a story, it's just that, the author is not smart to extract a good content from the story. But it's not a tr*sh story, so I suppose it's a good read to pass the time.

In short, it's a good story with a dumb author.

...

Now going deeper.

There are many things that ended up leaving me dissatisfied with the story.

Spoiler

The first was Beniang's death.

I mean, how long does it take for a person to die after their heart explodes?

Beniang's death was only the most impactful of the many times that Frey left his companions to do his things without worrying about the danger they might be facing. This scene only showed more of how dumb Frey and the author are.

They were facing an apocalypse, one of the most powerful demigods before the Lord, and the moment he arrives... is when Beniang was at her last moments after her heart exploded.

Then you ask! What was he doing before that?

Nothing!

He knew that his companions were facing a powerful enemy that they could not defeat, because HE was the one who told them to face him, and meanwhile he was taking his time, only to remember to go help them in her last moments.

You can make some reasonable explanations based on the plot of why he did this, but for me it's just dumb.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The second was the final battle, between Lord, Lucifer and Frey.

I just can't put, in one post, how dumb frey and all the characters involved looked in that battle.

My god!!!!!!

How Frey is dumb when he's preparing for the battle!

How the dialogue between Lord, Lucifer and Frey is dumb when they meet!

How each of them is dumb when they are showing their cards!

Frey and Beelzebub (Hell's greatest schemer) preparing for the battle is the dumbest thing I've ever read. To tell you the truth, you can say Frey doesn't even prepare anything, even though he is the weakest of the 3, even though the other 2 had prepared for a veeeeery long time for the battle.

The dialogue between the 3 then, what a dumb shit.

For some reason, their exchanges looked like a single character talking to himself. What a weird sh*t their conversation.

And the battle then?! What battle? I don't even know how to start. I'll just leave it while I say "how pathetic Lucifer is." My God!!!

Just dumb, dumb, dumb, d...

[collapse]

Spoiler

And poor Iris Phisfounder,

In the end, Lukas leaves her again, and he still asks her to wait for him, for I don't know how many thousands or even millions of years, after all that she went through for him.

Poor Iris, poor Iris...

From the beginning to the end, it seems that everything is in her hands, that she is the mastermind of everything that is happening... When in fact, all she did was release Lukas at the beginning of the story.

All the potential and mystery built up for her from the beginning till the end of the story about her being a great schemer was simply discarded, and it turned out that the only thing she did was free Lukas, while serving Lord and Lucifer in their plans at the same time.

It could have been amazing, it's just fine.

Pro

  • I like teacher like MCs.
  • The world seems interesting.
  • The harem doesn't look like it will be "on your face", which is a kind I like.
Con

  • Too simple. Both the world, and the characters are kinda too simplisitic. Too bad, I think with a little more development they could have been made way better.
  • The story feels like it's in fast forward, which is unsettling. Take your time author, let us enjoy the story.

The first volume is very good it's almost perfect, but the second is another story altogether. I came to read "The Great Mage Returns After 4000 Year" no "The savior god of humanity is among us" or whatever. Simply put, I can recommend only volume one.

I really understand why many people given low rating, saying its boring.

Because the MC is like that.

One of the reason is how his "power up" is a "deus ex machina".

Its really s*upid how he, a great mage, who had thousands years of confinement, the great legendary figure, that hell-bent on fighting demigod & loath humans who obey them, really didnt have any real plan at all how to defeat the enemy, and all his power up is a series of "luck".

why this one has many bad reviews I actually think it was good. Came here from the manga adaption so I started from around chapter 60~ and wasnt able to let it go until the latest release which is chapter 202.

Some of the review said the MC was blank and boring? I mean yes the guy has been alive mentally for 4000 years in a desolate place, his action and way of thinking should at least reflect some of that. But he is no way an uninteresting fellow. He is... more>> talented, charismatic by nature, and really goal-focused. The world building is good, side characters and antagonists arent push-over, the politics, the action and the pace of the story is also nice - if there is ever a "dull" and peaceful moment, because it serves a purpose as well but the pace always pick up.

Also, This is also NOT a HAREM. I would have drop it if it was - The MC encountered/is accompanied by several females, but none of them are romantically interested in him, rather they respect/fear, or juts happen to have the same goal as him. <<less

Very boring MC who somehow manages to be both op as hell and yet only ever survives due to luck. Like he's either a thousand times better than his opponents or completely helpless, incapable of doing anything except getting his dumb ass saved by the sacrifice of others. Terrible novel and boring as hell.

So, what is interesting to note is that this novel is split up in two seasons (for now?).

The first season is about the great mage, who returns and resumes the fight of good vs evil. I won't go into many details as to avoid spoilers, but it is basically what the plot and novel title are all about.

The second season however is like a reset, in which the author decides to introduce an entirely new plot, but with the same MC as the first season. Personally, I feel like reading... more>> another novel, but with the same MC as in the first season and for that I'll be dropping this. Other readers may correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like there won't be much overlay with the first season and for that it has completely lost my interest.

So, I'm basing my rating based on the first season alone and while it isn't a bad novel, it isn't great either. If you're into reincarnation stories with a MC that quickly grows into an overpowered hero figure against powerful supernatural forces that are oppressing humanity, then yeah.. You can kill some time with this ;).

However, don't expect a quality novel. There are better novels to read for that. This is basic progression fantasy and wish fulfillment, nothing more and nothing less. <<less

This review is going to be about the Light Novel instead of the manhwa.
The english translation is fan translated and can be read at woopread. Com. There are two seasons. The review is going be about season 1 of the book.

Caution:

If you are a fan of the fantasy genre where magic, elves, gods, demons are aplenty, then this book is for you!
Season 1 is about 239 chapters which is decently big without lot of repeated plot. So no fluff, action packed, emotion packed whirlwind tour. Once you pick... more>> up the book, you better keep an eye on the watch, otherwise you might end up skipping your meals, and forget to sleep.

A brief summary of the plotline:
Semi God-like beings (called Demigods) want to rule humans and the 'Continent'. Humanity's power is like ants in front of these supreme beings. Except, humanity knows magic, and those who use magic are called wizards. Wizards powers are divided into 'stars'. Starting from the weakest, 1 star to the most powerful wizards humanity can produce are 9 stars. But even the strongest of Humanity's wizards can't guarantee a victory against the weakest of the Demigods.
Lucas Trowmen is a 9-star mage, a genius wizard, visionary of his time. He has brought together the different races, countries in a firm belief that Demigods can be defeated. He and his friends are putting up a fight against demigods, doing the unbelievable, slowly 1 at a time, defeating the Demigods. But then the unthinkable (or is it expected?) happened. The ruler of the Demigods, Lord defeats Lucas Trowmen all too easily. The amazing 9-star power of Lucas is nothing in front of the rule of the Demigods. Lord decides, just defeating Lucas isn't enough. Killing him will be too easy. Instead of locking him away for an eternity of solitude in a locked away dimension. A solitary prison one of its kind. 4000 years later, Lucas is able to break away from this prison and return - but the world has changed. Could he get his revenge? He has lost everything, could he gain all the power back in this more 'modern' current world? When he was at his strongest he couldn't even touch the hair of Lord, will history repeat for him again?

Review:

This entire novel is a thrill ride. Loved every moment of it. Lucas and his interpersonal relationships with his friends from 4000 years back, as well as the new friends he makes in the 'current' world, is heartwarming. The author does a pretty good job of exploring the human side of the characters in the novel. It's not only an action novel, it's a novel about commitment, promises, never giving up, failing, falling down and getting back up, not forgetting your roots. I can't wait to pick up season 2.

My rating 10/10. Heaveho! <<less

I know this is way too early to rate this novel, I'm rating this novel as low as a 2 star not because the novel is technically bad, but because there's really no more point for me to read further.

So you've read the synopsis, hence you'll find out the MC will be too OP from the start. No major advancement related to magic, so all his knowledge will still be a major advantage despite the 4000 yr gap. And my worst peeve for this novel is the story-telling, the MC... more>> will have this inner monologues of what he'll do, so there will be nothing to expect. No ups, no downs. We already know that it would take him a month to reach rank 5, then probably a month more to reach rank 7 after going to the dungeon.

If it's a normal MC I'd probably still be happy to read this for a daily dose of wish-fulfillment. Unfortunately, the MC's indifferent reactions make his supposed victories and progress scrapes off all the satisfaction from my reading experience. It's like you want for the MC to be stronger and share your happiness with the author, but he would just look down on you with a face that says, "What are you smiling about? He's supposed to win!" <<less

You can look at my past reviews to know that I am generally pretty generous with ratings.

Pros: Interesting Backstory, cool magic, mysterious elements, don't know where the plot is going to go. Also I love an OP protagonist.

Cons: Shallow side characters, only seem to exist to provide contrast for the MC, but even MC is pretty shallow so far. Plot seems like it is incredibly rushed, like A happens, he does X, then B happens, so he does Y, then C happens, so he does Z. He hasn't been proactive... more>> at all, except for getting stronger.

There seems like there is a lot he could do, but doesn't even consider doing it. Doesn't really feel like anything matters, because MC can win in any situation, and random things always seem to turn out in his favour. Bit of a Mary Sue in that regard, not because he is strong, but because the way people react to him is always convenient for him to basically show off with no real danger

Right now I'd just say its pretty dry and unemotional. Its more like we are spectating a character, than actually reading about someone's story. Kinda feels like I am reading a synopsis <<less

I hope this gets picked up.

As of chapter 6, I am addicted.

Tried the manhwa but it doesn't feel the same.

You are going to know right away if this is the novel for you after the first couple of chapters.

If this was written badly this would be pretty average, I really really want to read more.

Its great! I like how fast paced it is and MC is pretty chill guy. I thought he would be the really overpowered and emotionless type at the start but he kinda opens up midway through. So far MC isn't too OP yet so there is some semblance of power balance happening here (unless you compare him to the run-of-the-mill mages).

The translation is solid and it updates daily so I have something to look forward to at the end of the day. Its an easy read so my verdict is... more>> you should check it out if you like something fast and you're not into harems. <<less

Spoiler

Even the fight againts the King Drake has no real tension. There are no stakes. We know that he has to win or else it would've been disastrous

There are no real tension or excitement that I feel when reading this. In fact I'm just reading this. There are no expectations after all.

I will never be disappointed or exited in this story. After all I'm just reading not anticipating.

I've repeated it so much that you probably got my point. Go read some history books. At least they are actually entertaining. Not like these cardboard cutout story and cardboard cutout characters. <<less

The general idea of this novel is not bad but a lot is ruined by the personality of the main character and the attitude of the author towards providing information to the readers. The MC is a very advanced mage who somehow got his soul transferred to a new body 4000 years in the future. It takes almost 30 chapters before we find out why and the only reaction I had was why would the author hold back this information for so long? There is absolutely no reason to hide... more>> that information and to me it is more an extension of the authors writing style, constantly leaving out information that would make decisions and actions taken understandable. I guess the author is using this style to demonstrate that the MC is smart and knows things that others don't and that why he's so strong. Unfortunately the only thing this accomplishes is that it looks like the author is making up reasons afterwards to prevent making the MC seem to not have human emotions. I find it impossible to relate to the MC because of the writing style. A lot of that could have been prevented if the author explains more of the problems the MC faces before he takes action. For instance in the fight with the lich it would have helped a lot if the author explained the problems with the MC interfering with the lichs actions too soon. Because the author did not explain why the MC could not attack the lich upfront the actions taken by the MC do not feel like the actions taken by a person who wants to save the world from the beings that locked him up 4000 years ago (and even worse it looks like the way of thinking the beings that locked him up would use when confronting an enemy, there is no intent to save people or to prevent unnecessary casualties and for someone who wants to save the world you would think that part would be more important). <<less

Great novel, the manhwa is awesome so is nice to have the novel too. Pretty sure there must be much stuff missing on the visual that can only be found on here. Like how the MC can get so strong in a single night, the manhwa we get only a panel here I hoping for some explanation.

Hope the translation gets soon to manhwa part its not like its too far.
