This is probably one of my favorite stories here. I've read it three times! It might be because of the author's writing style, but this story feels very satisfying for some reason. It feels like drinking a cup of tea or something, not many ups and downs, but frankly enjoyable throughout. I've heard people call this boring, but I think it's more like the conspiracy brews underneath (not too deep really) and whether you see it or miss it it doesn't neccesseraily matter as long as you enjoy it? It... more>> isn't that complicated or anything though and maybe people don't like that aspect of it?

  1. The characters feel mostly like mature adults. Even when they aren't particularly smart, they can still be cautious, and nobody jumps in in blind, self-righteous anger with no brains to rein them in. Favorite character is probably MC. I can't think of other lazy MCs in chinese or other stories that weren't somehow exaggerated to a comical extent. As for ML, I like this one more than the ML in TBVW by the same author, but the one in TBVW had that one scene of
    Spoiler

slight breakdown that served as a turning point of the relationship into something more genuine.

    [collapse]
This one might not need it, but I still liked it.
  2. Story is basically slow-paced and kind-of behind the scenes palace intrigue? It's up to personal taste whether you like it or not. Overall I liked this aspect of it also more than TBVW, but I liked the main villain in TBVW more.
  3. Romance is nice. Really nice. There's no "fell in love at first sight because 'pretty'", at most appearance is considered a pleasant surprise. If I had to describe it, I think the love here builds together with the trust. It feels like an achievement when they share a bit more of themselves with each other as time passes. I also like that nobdoy played the victim in this realtionship even though none of the two had asked for the marriage. The MC won't act as if a great wrong has been done to her because she married, but she draws the line since the beginning and basically tells ML that what she wants is a comfortable life and has no interest in anything else in the estate. The ML wasn't even a**hole-ish and didn't seem unwilling even when the rumors said that his new bride wasn't beautiful. He wasn't really planning to mistreat her, only at most limit her power in his home.
I Really recommend reading this, or at the very least giving it a try. <<less

This novel is really great! Fast-paced plot, reasonable leads and well-written. Absolutely love love love our chill/badass heroine! The MC & ML's relationship is not overly romantic, but there are still some sweet and sentimental moments. They compliment each other's personalities really well. Mind you, this story is mainly focused on politics and scheming - you'll have to "read between the lines" to understand what's going on. So, if you want a fluffy/heart-warming romance, this is not it. But, it's still enjoyable. This I definitely recommend.

This novel is pretty good, let me tell you that. The plot is solid tho you may think its a bit boring at the middle. I cried a 'lil bit in this story and I love love love our MC. She's not clingy, she's strong-willed girl and she's no Mary Sue. She's one of my favorite female character in a transmigration novel. It was not about revenge. It focuses more on political side of a story. Besides, there's no s*upid harem plot which I'm very satisfied about.

A good novel with realistic situation. It kinda felt like a slice of life novel. MC and ML are smart people who love themselves and also love each other. It's supposed to be a common knowledge that nobles and royalty are great at acting but very few novels showcase it.

A great read. Compared to other novels of this genre, this one is more subtle in explanations and needs to be read between lines to understand the schemes going on in the background. The writer has very anti climatic style of writing; definitely not as intense and dramatic as others. As is said "even if not said, one isn't blind". This fits the story. Just cause it isn't mentioned implicitly, doesn't mean the water is calm below surface. But, this feels more realistic. Rather than a reader to whom everything... more>> is explained, it's like we are part of the society in the story. A calm facade is maintained throughout and with subtle bits and pieces, the whole story behind the scene has to be coined.

Another novel with power couple. There is no reason to not love the characters. I feel even more closer, because my own personality and philosophy is very close to that of Hau Xi Win. Yan Jin Qiu is also respectable character. There's no challenging his cunningness and intelligence (also viciousness). And his unwavering faith and love for our FL won me over too. They have one of the most harmonious and loving relationship in all of the novels I read. The way their relationship develops from respect, consideration and then to love is also very natural.

I honestly feel the author has a very good grasp on human nature. There is no black and white, just a puddle of grey. So, all in all, there was no hateful characters, some who I disliked more than other, and some pitiable victims of the situation.

There also were considerable emphasis on the patriarchy and sexism of the era. The plot was almost driven mostly by the various female characters. It made me wonder, how those women would have fared if they had the same freedom and education as now. They were no less prominent and compelling than the counterpart male characters. I would even dare say, this is a story of women of that time.

The story is quite fast paced. But on some parts, I wished the author took more words to highlight the important events. Lots of actions happening offscreen are only hinted, then skipped to announce the end result. It does take some of the excitement away. It appeared very leisure in the first half, and even in the end, the high wasn't high enough.

Over all, the plot is interesting, the schemes are top notch, and the characters have layers to them. Definitely worth of read, not only once, but twice and thrice. <<less

I've read To Be A Virtuous Wife a few times and will definitely read this novel again in the future to pass leisure times.

TBAVW and ETT absolutely have similarities but also differences. Both doesnt have a lot of actions but TBAVW is more active than ETT but ETT totally got a lot more oscar-acting skills and underhanded schemes than you expected. TBAVW female is more vicious and fiery but ETT female is more valiant and idly.

I think the most contrast between the 2 novel is, TBAVW explained almost all the... more>> schemes' planned and masterminds behind the scene but ETT mostly left you wondering and suspicious on how the schemes carried out and who the true mastermind is.

  • Spoiler

I give one of the schemes as example; the death of the empress dowager. The writer explained in the story that the crown princess brided the empress's people to poison the empress dowager. On the surface it may seems true and thats all but can you say Xian Wangye doesnt have anything to do with this? He clearly just acting filial to the empress dowager but the truth is he knew the fact that the old empress had killed his mother. He even once promised to Xian Wangfei that he will make sure in the future she will need to bow to no one. I doubt he got nothing to do with empress dowager poisoning. He is a person who doesnt need to do things by his own hand. He just needed to instigate someone and wait to see for the outcomes.

    [collapse]
After finished reading this novel I find it interesting how most of the schemes actually done as he had planned but the writer didnt explained a lot about his involvement. He is a puppeteer who controls the play behind the scenes that is why he can stay calm, kind and undisturbed all the time. <<less

Easily my favorite light novel ever. Unlike most transmigration novels, the MC isn't super ambitious but also isn't met with insane situations that drag her into a "main plot". She steadily accepts her duty as a daughter in ancient times to marry whoever her parents chose and lives a regular life of leisure with her new husband.

I really enjoy the dynamic between the MC and her husband, as it's just a lot more realistic that other novels. Since this was an arranged marriage, they don't love each other but respect... more>> each other and slowly they develop true feelings for one another. They're both the type to show their love with actions so it's more touching and don't spout overbearing words of love for each other very often.

The drama she has with the other female cousins in her family are normal and understandable, and do not evolve into these insane schemes made to ruin each other. Simple dislike so the most scheming plot are simple rumors spread that she's not pretty.

Overall, it's just a lot more realistic and a relaxing read for those who need a break from the extreme plot lines of most transmigration novels. <<less

One I keep returning to, a realistic yet still enthralling novel. Romance is not too unbelievable. Two mains love themselves more than they love each other, but it doesn't detract or seem unfeeling. FL just making the best of a situation to live a comfortable life in a place where women's lives are at the whim of mens fancies.

If racking your heads over politics ain't your schtick, then stay away. But in case youbdontimd it or wanna give it a try anyway, the go ahead. This ain't gonna disappoint.

Though bewarned, the focus is more on political scheming & connections than on over the top action ?

I love the leads. They know what they want and they work for it. I mean this is the type of thinking that I'm trying to have. The story is quite dark considering the scheming and everything but, it's also fluffy at the same time? I can't describe it well. Also for me, I feel like the story is complete. How to explain this? Hmm. It's like I didn't wish for more, like the story ended perfectly for me? I don't always encounter books such as, so I really... more>> like this one. I like how the male lead treated the female lead as his other half - someone who complemented him and in the same status as him. He respected her. I love that.

This is worth reading. Try this! :))) <<less

I enjoyed this novel very much. Some finds MC is unlikable because she is lazy but I find that she is more than that (what's wrong with her enjoying her life). You'll find it that MC is realible when needed.

ML appears gentle and kind in front of people but actually vicious and scheming. But he treats MC and her family well.

Spoiler

ML never takes any concubines because he saw his own mother suffered in the hand of his father's concubine. Although before his marriage there were rumours saying that MC has no beauty, ML still promise himself to treat MC well however her look will be.

Too bad there is not much chapter about their life in the palace. One thing for sure, it's:

a happy ending

It's by the same author as To Be a Virtuous Wife and I feel like it was the author's attempt at the same genre of transmigration but from a different angle.

The protagonist of Eight Treasures Trousseau is more active, the male lead is darker, and their relationship is more communicative and expressive than TBAVW, but I do feel like the pacing of this story suffers a little. There's a lot of tension and build up and then when important plot events happen towards the end, things accelerate. That might be... more>> nitpicking because most stories have that sort of format when it comes to resolving conflict, I just feel like TBAVW was more unpredictable and thus a little more interesting.

And the note I had earlier about the more communicative relationship - just because the two actually talked more about their feelings didn't make the implications of their words or actions on the plot any clearer. There's a lot of telling that gets done but it's done so vaguely that we feel we have to piece it together. Whereas with TBAVW, I feel like there is more showing and what things were told were done to better effect.

All in all, I think TBAVW is the better written story but I do like the relationship in 8TT more and compared to other novels in this genre I still think it holds up well. <<less

Loved this story! I appreciated how the FL didn't need a reason to live; she wasn't trying to get revenge on anyone or anything. She just tried to enjoy her life as much as she could, carefree and lazy. Honestly, I want that lifestyle too. :) I know a lot of people don't like keeping the titles untranslated, but personally I loved it. I think that it preserved the authenticity and poetic nature of the novel a lot more. Overall, I love the story, love the leads, and absolutely love... more>> the translating. <<less

5/5 Amazing! This novel was very good. The interactions between the MC and ML were very sweet and light. Not too much fluff but gives a great feeling. The ending was not bad at all, just wishing that they could've let us see an interaction with the whole family including children. A nice read.

I've reread this twice or thrice. I might give a better review if there weren't so many confusing aspects to the story. I'm thankful to the translator, it's a great story and I really appreciate it. Hope someday I learn Chinese though so I can finally understand the ending.

Eight Treasures Trousseau is a wonderful story. In numerous Historical Chinese novels, the female tends to be determined, clever, powerful, and active. But who have thought that such a lazy female MC would be so attractive. I could relate to her in that I wouldn't want to do anything either lol. Though she is lazy, she is capable, strong, and clever when need be. She doesn't find unnecessary trouble unless provoked. Other than this unique female's personality, her relationship with the male lead is a slow love. They understand each... more>> other and respect each other's ambitions & space.

The politics in this story, though a little confusing, I found it intriguing. Each character had a place in this novel & not just introduced as mere cannon fodder. The author use of foreshadowing & hidden meanings was especially fascinating. No words were wasted and each chapter had a purpose towards character and plot development. This story definitely deserves an "Oscar" if ya know what I mean.

I haven't read the author's previous novel, "To Be A Virtuous Wife" but after this, I will definitely check it out! <<less
