The hearse with the weird odor slowed to a stop before the entrance. The sound of pebbles could be heard bouncing on the ceiling. There were footsteps coming from the corridor, and there seemed to be someone sawing next door. The door knob to the room rattled slightly, and the faucet in the bathroom kept dripping even though it had been screwed shut. There was a rubber ball that rolled on its own underneath the bed. Wet footsteps started to surface one after another on the floor.

At 3 am, Chen Ge held a cleaver in his hand as he hid beside the room heater. The call he was trying to make was finally answered. “Landlord, is this what you meant by ‘the house can be a little crowded at night’‽”

Amazing, just simply amazing. The story is so captivating that I can't stop, even though it's 2am and scared out of my wits, I'm still reading this novel

I'm nearing the end so I'm planning to read the author's other work (My iyashikei game)

For those who are about to read this, read at least 50 chapters and I'll promise you'll be addicted to this.

Giving this a 5, because it scares, excites and makes me think along as I read through the story. Novels scares me more than movies and Mangas (blame active imagination), and I've read too many horror-thriller genres since grade school (Are You Afraid of the Dark series). Mind you, I started reading this at 1 A.M. Alone in my room while the lights are turned off. It's pretty good for a horror-mystery novel.

it's one of the best story's I've read and will stay as one of the best

the characters in general especially the antagonists are great.

the mystery's are great and will leave you wanting to know more, the scenarios he go through are all of great quality besides a few flukes but even if some are flukes they never leave a bad taste in you're mouth.

... more>> it never gets consistently boring and always leaves you wanting to know more about what's going on and how it all ties together.

the only complaint I have is the the predictable intermissions between the action packed parts but even those are good.

so overall an easy 5/5 had me on the edge on my seat and enjoyed it, great story and excels in what it wanted to do. <<less

I came here after reading [Lord of the Mysteries], I wasn't expecting anything but HECK! This is one of the best chinese novels I've read. I really love the author's way of storytelling. It scared me several times. After reading this, I tried writing a horror story, bruh, I could only admire the big brain of the author. The story has lots of twistsー ehem like betrayal, and also insane characters (I particularly like Scissors hehe)

Also, please don't listen to bad reviews. Once, I was about to read... more>> this but when I saw a negative review, I backed off. I decided to give it a try after my second visit, and now that I did, huuu I can only smack my head in frustration. <<less

This is just amazing I was looking for novel with game elements and this just came. I've never been into horror but before I knew it I just got hooked up.

this story slaps lmao... great mix of atmospheric horror (when the supernatural threats are strong) and slapstick comedy (when the protagonist's forces are stronger), 5/5 would recommend to anyone

the School of the Afterlife arc that takes place from chapters 761 to 906 is pretty weak though, which is why I stopped reading to write a review instead - it tries to be scary by threatening chen ge with imminent physical danger, which works to an extent but mostly serves to highlight the fact that he has plot armor and will... more>> never, ever take a serious injury

in general, the writing quality hasn't dropped off since the early chapters, but the author's dedication to the show-don't-tell style of narration has (since at least chapter 558 or so), which really lessens its impact as a horror story... it makes me worry that the author might have been running out of ideas or otherwise overcommitting to a rushed release schedule, which really dampens my enthusiasm for reading the next arc

also as a minor nitpick the story starts to get into uniquely chinese concepts of crime/punishment/guilt that I don't really understand, reading as a westerner... the translator uses the term "sinners", which I understand is the conventional translation, but nothing in the story has anything to do with sin lol <<less

This is really my all time favorite webnovel. I love Chen Ge and his crazy self (but he thinks he is not), his employees and of course Zhang Ya!!! Hence my account name ChenYa???.

The story is very engaging especially how the author describes something or someone. The emotions are also described perfectly. I have reread this three times and this will be the fourth time because there are no more chapters to read (I read them all).
