I'd like to agree with Smooth Che.

This novel is promising but the power-building is... frustrating. With all those hard work and many things to get him at least twice as strong and won back the 'early start' that his rivals have when he got thrown out of that... survival event? yeah. He should at least be twice or thrice now. But then, the author decided to still keep him nerfed despite blessing him with those cheats. Frustrating.

The MC is decent. Only care for those who care back to him. Ruthless... more>> and was feared for his action back in that survival events. Since the start of story, he already has a damn badass title and arranged with a mortal enemies. Yup!

The romance is... the best out of all Xianxia LN, that have male protag, that I ever read. the way the main couple fell for each other is simply cute and swoon worthy, it straight up won my heart and stample of approvement.

This novel is decent, though I don't know what would happen in the 'far chapter" as I stopped reading this at 200 chps or so, because of personal problem irl. But this one deserve more chance. <<less

Pretty much follow the same pattern as BTTH and WDQK:

The MC is always fighting people with higher cultivation realm, repetitive with s*upid antagonist and very little character development.

The main difference is the fact that the MC is loyal to love interest, even with the story somehow revolving around the LI, the development between them is kind of lackluster.

another thing to keep in mind, the author love describing women.

This author continues to write mediocre novels just like BTTH and WDQK following the same patterns seen in most chinese counterparts.

Do not get me wrong, this novel is not bad, but it doesn't bring anything different or exciting that kept me engaged in the story (e.g. The academy arc, which I didn't finish, has little plot or character development and it is extremely boring).

Certain aspects that bothered me:

  • Over 90% of the conflicts are created because of women that the brainless antagonists like
  • Lot of fights just happen to occur after the MC levels up
  • Every woman described as extremely beautiful starts as a cold person and a few chapters later end up being a bit interested in the MC and "blushing their cheeks"
Overall, it's an OK novel, read it if you have... more>> nothing else to do or if you read the other 2 novels of this author and wish to learn a bit about the other 2 MC's fate. <<less

Got bored with this one because of the release. Maybe not much people wanted this one. I can see that, because not much is good about this story, a very typical power/level up novel.

Maybe the other readers knows better, and did not give too much attention in this one because they also found it a bit boring later.

The flaw is that the release is slow. I do not know when I stopped. But I think it is about a year now. And from where I am currently is versus the... more>> current translated are not that far from each other.

Story is forgettable. I have read some and also dropped some. But this one is so forgettable, I have to reread chapters again to remember what this story is about. <<less

It is a decent read, but I began loosing interest in the middle of the academy arc. It was mostly focused on rankings and getting stronger, with no interesting plot. The only interesting part now, is the future conflict of mc's girl, and how he will try to solve it. I am dropping it, but will probably pick it up later.

An interesting new concept by Tian Can Tu Dou. The story is pretty good to read, but some people may get bored quickly because it is a little slow in the first few chapters. Right now, the story goes at a good pace, but later on, it will get really annoying for a certain reason.
Spoiler

He stays in the same academy for 500 chapters.

So, Xianxia lovers, you will probably love this story, but for those who want the best novel there is, this is probably not for you.

Really good story and shows lot of promise. The MC is a typical genius who comes from a backwater state as in 'PEERLESS MARTIAL GOD' whose parents are also in the same condition ie... missing genius mother and sad, lonely father.

Ruthless, vicious, ruthless, only thing truly cruel is the word count writing only. I think this book was explicitly written for TV pg-13 rating. MC is the "Blood Calamity" which sounds cool the first 25 times then you wonder when is the author going to explain it (at around chapter 550 author kind of does, but ignores the killing and blood and generally the explanation so you are left wondering), the MC is actually kind, but he taken up the nickname "Blood Calamity", death is rarer than shounen anime (considering... more>> this is a book made for TV is retrospect makes things more clear), and the only blood you see if from coughing it up so you can hide it... get the picture?

edit: basically what I was expecting was a ruthless MC who lived up to his title, but I did not really understand this book was made for children (13-14) not even really even older teens. Expecting Attack on Titan got Shaman King. <<less

It was a good at the beginning of the story even at the middle of the novel upto the end ofbof of acedemies although it's kinda long ass repetitive battles.

But it really becomes downhill since the introduction of "fighting spirit" where the commander will lead his armies or troops and the commander can have fighting spirit. Lame as f*ck the author could have armies vs armies if that's what he wants but this fighting spirit really put the story way down a notch.

After reading Battle Through The Heavens and Wu Dong Qian Kun, The Great Ruler was the next step in Heavenly Silkworm Potato's universe, as it is presented justly as the sequel of both previous novels (who run in "parallel"). But is it the real masterpiece of the author ? Well, yes and no.

The story itself is pretty good for the first third, first half of the book, but sadly after this, the writing becomes quite repetitive, as the author reuses the same narrations, the same cliffhanger, the same deus ex... more>> machina and the same power against power struggles, with a few originalities here and there. Only in the last arc, which we could see come but still arrives abruptly, does the plot renews itself and reaches a level close to excellence.

The characters are a true mixed bag. The protagonist is good, clever, hard working, goal-driven, thought on himself, not an egomaniac jerk or a sociopath, and different from the main characters of the previous two novels (if Xiao Yan is a tickster alchemist warrior and Lin Dong a classic defender hero, Mu Chen gives me the impression of a kind of special force soldier with a big side of romantism). Luo Li, the MC's love interest (and here she's the only one, unlike the previous novels) is very good, just as strong and determinated as her man, which she is hopelessly in love with, and although she is absent from about half of the novel in total, she's pretty much a second protagonist when present. By the way, I must say that the romance aspect of the story is much, much better than in the writer's previous works.

The others characters when they are on the MC's side are quite one dimensional with the few exceptions of Mu Chen's parents, his partner Nine Nether, the children of the two precedent books' protagonists and of course Xiao Yan and Lin Dong themselves (who reappear first in the background, then in person and finally play decisive roles toward the end, and they are still as likeable as ever). The others are okay, but not that memorable. The antagonists are a big weak spot of the story (a recurring problem with this author), as nearly all of them fit in the archetype of the arrogant elder, petty young master or cruel macho. Only three of them of them are memorable: his love rival Ji Xuan, the Battle Emperor and the final antagonist.

The power system is pretty good, although the main power path, centered on qi (here called Spiritual Energy) is a bit classic (especially in the numbered Sovereign level), there a number of side paths (through the techniques) which bring freshness to the book, as well as the Sovereign body system (both a part of the main cultivation system and a significant part of the plot). Of course, as it is normal in a Heavenly Silkworm Potato novel, the protagonist also has a second power path, here a mix of array master/battle commander, less detailled but essential for the story.

The world building is good, better than before if you consider the previous books, but it's still pretty bareboned and functional. There's enough background for the story to work and to put us in the mood, but it is clear it is another of this author's weak spot.

For the translation, the quality of Thyaeria's work is variable, between the good and the very good, but the recurring presence of typos, mispelling, confusion of characters' name and overuse of certain figures of speech bar his work from excellence. It does not prevent the reading from being enjoyable, but it makes it a bit cringy at time.

In conclusion, The Great Ruler is a good, very good novels at times, with a fine protagonist, good romance for that kind of novel (it's rare enough to mention), a good but repetitive plot (after the first half) and sub-par antagonists, although it is redeemed with a great last arc and an interesting power system. The translation is good, up to Wuxiaworld's standards, but there is clearly room for improvement. And for the ones who've read the author's previous books, there's the reminiscence factor, with the joy of seeing what happened to their heroes after their stories ended. So my final verdict is a 7 out of 10, which you may push to 8 if you got the nostalgia factor, better than BTTH and more or less at the same level as WDQK.

P.S: Thanks to Heavenly Silkworm Potato for writing this novel and Thyaeria for translating it. <<less

What to say about this novel? Its basic, predictable, bland and full of cliche's. It is flat out decent. Nothing more than decent. Or I should say average. Yep, perfect word is an average story. Ending is rather lacklustre and very predictable. Just nothing to set up another story or give proper closure.

One problem with this novel is, MC is like a middle version of Xiao Yan (btth) and Lin Dong (Wdqk). He is pretty much a mindless drone made to copy the two of them. Romance is very dull... more>> and boring. Love interest keeps calling him a rogue and to stop taking advantage of her, when they are like years into their relationship. He hugs her, omg stop being a rogue. Kisses her, omg stop taking advantage of me. Like wth. Very Bland!

Another thing about MC. HE NEVER GROWS UP. Dude literally feels like he is a teenager his entire life. Didnt follow his age but he should well be in his 40's. Yet he acts like a kid all the time. Not in the immature way, rather the meek I am a strong kid, now give me orders and I will do it.

scheming is very lacking. Its all about who has bigger fists. His enemies have rather not bad schemes except they always fail due to plot armor or them being s*upid. End boss was so pathetic, just a old s*upid creep.
Spoiler

the evil momarch claimed he wanted to be sealed for 49, 000 years all because he wanted to get the spiritual energy. How bloody s*upid. He could have destroyed the dude that sealed him yet he didnt. These are his words. After all he could fight 3 people on that level at once. Now his mindset of invading mu chens world was to "make my fiend clan stronger" but he threw away 49, 000 years away to achieve this. When he could easily take over the the great thousand world back then. S*upid right? Why wait such a long time and especially lock yourself up in order to get your clan stronger when they are strongest with your leadership.

[collapse]
bad writing in my opinion, or a rushed ending.

another thing to point to point out, no female villains. Like I understand it may tough for some authors to write about women pov. But its unrealistic to not have any conflict with half the population due to them being females. No problem with no female villains, but every female has MC best intentions at mind and if they insult him, its because they are acting tsundere. Legit every female introduced is an ally or at worst neutral. He will help any woman asking him for assistance and risk his life for a random woman. Not a bad trait, but very predictable for a novel.

2.5/5 not a 3 <<less

The first arc is ok/good by this authors standards and serves as a proper introdution but everything that follows is complete trite toothless shit. The MC is apparently known as "Blood Calamity" from a previous "event" that is never properly explained just referenced, but he's actually the least lethal character in any of the authors works, including all unnamed backgroud characters. In the first 1k chapters he actually only kills like 5 characters despite getting to what one would consider the beginning of the peak of cultivation in that time.... more>> This is in spite of his often proclaimed ruthlessness and overwhelmingly numerous situations where letting others live is straight up both s*upid and amoral.

That doesn't even cover how bad the writing is after the introductory arc. It feels like some intern or fan was given guidelines to keep withing while keeping wordcount up only because I don't quite think AI writing is at the level that it could've written this, though maybe more soul and feeling would have been put in it by an incompetent AI than this complete lack of substance, self consistency and care. It's impressive in it's utter soulcrushing lack of humanity and imagination. No fight is interesting, no power aweinspiring, no plot is sinister, no enemy relatable. The cultivation is completely power based, the only interesting part was the Spirit realm with spiritual beast souls etc, but that was introduced in the introductory arc before it was promptly thrown into the blender to be forgotten as fast as possible the following arcs. This can be compared to BTTH where every major realm meant something different could be done that couldn't before, like Dou Wang that could make wings to fly with, or WDQK with Life and Death Realms insane recovery.

Then we have the unfortunate displeasure of reading a story that want's to be harem but is so clearly not... Apart from like 4 male character the only interesting characters are women that become interested in the MC to some degree and most are decent/good or even great but they are inevitably shoved ruthlessly under the buss as soon as their arc is done as the MC has one true love, so even the illusion of a harem that might be the only saving grace in this emotionless drivel of a story is shattered and dumped down the nearest outhouse. Sure Luo Li and Mu Chen's chemistry is very good, but it's surrounded by so much tr*sh and filler that it can't carry the weight.

In the end we have the villains that ruined WDQK, the Yimo/Fiend Clan, that are just the most uninteresting thing ever in fiction. Completely corrupting evil wannabe zerg things that some villains somehow believe they can actually control/make deals with...

In the end this is the worst non fanfiction thing I've ever read that is still written in coherent language. <<less

I have to ADMIT while I was reading this I had WDQK in mind the whole time cause I loved that novel even though the ending was quite rushed. But when I read this it actualy made me appreciate the whole rushed parts because this novel was just TOO SLOW and repetitive for my liking which just made it so boring and unexciting especially considering the fact that I predicted the whole plots from chapter205 all the way to chapter 856, and guess what? I was right about everything so... more>> much to the point I believed I was psychic after I checked the plot on Fandom Wikia. I was extremely saddened and depressed over the fact that I spoilt the whole book for myself and for the fact this book was so boring and repetitive that even a 15-year old could guess everthing from a mile away I really appreciated his effort but when he writes his next book (unfortunately) he should think more about the readers than his own damn SALARY AND POCKETS DAMN IT!!!! <<less

First of all, let me start by saying that I started this because of BTTH and WDQK. I have loved the author's former works and came here for more. Being a fan of BTTH and WDQK, I ... more>>

was disappointed by how marginal elements for those stories are in this work. While both XY and LD become massive characters in TGR, they appearances are so rare. Also only few characters from BTTH and WDQK appear in this story, and apart from XY and LD, they only play as cameos for 1 or 2 chapters at most. There were also no details on their territories whatsoever since MC never get to travel to their places.

[collapse]
.

That aside, TGR has a nice setup early on. Although all in all, the ideas deployed feels like combination of those in BTTH and WDQK, it was still able to produce a nice and enjoyable stories. I especially like the interaction between MC and LL, which last for a good 600 chapters or so, before the two separated. Their interaction was pretty much the best part of TGR imho. Afterwards, the story becomes a bit monotonous for me. The author put his focus on having Mu Chen catching up XY and LD that he has little for anything else
Spoiler

Even after MC and LL meet again later on, they don't have the same level of interaction as they did early on. Also he didn't show us anything about XY and LD's places at all, which is for me a bit disappointing considering how I started this.

[collapse]
.

In the end, do I reccomend reading this? Perhaps yes. To this day, I still think MC and LL's interaction is among the best you can get in this kind of novel. I especially love how these two treat each other. Things about cultivation and combat are not much different from WDQK and BTTH, so if you like those, you should enjoy this one. <<less

Alright, I'll keep this review short.

I don't know what the author learned from BTTH and WDQK, but reading this novel is like picking up BTTH or WDQK half-way through.

The concept of the plot is interesting, but it can only be described as poor execution. You are thrown into the world at chapter 500 of a one-thousand-chapters-long novel. With no introduction of the setting, no character background, no explanation, NOTHING.

It feels like the author wrote a normal novel, then just delete the first half and call it a mystery. That's not... more>> how it's supposed to work. When I first started, it felt weird and unnatural, so much so that at chapter 10, I had to stop and check other sites to make sure I didn't miss something.

Now, the plot development. In BTTH and WDQK, the plots progress at a good pace at first, but as the story progress, fillers started to appear at around chapter 5xx or so. For TGR, fillers are there at the very beginning. For the first 50 chapters, almost 40 are full of fillers. The interactions between characters are limited to the MC bragging about how awesome he is after coming out of the spiritual road.

Remember how Yun Che interacted with his clan members and Yao Chen? How Lin Dong interacted with his family members as well as the Marten? Well, in TGR, the interaction between MC and his father include his father asking MC for advice, MC gives his father advice, and his father talking about how proud he is.

There are absolutely zero human feelings in the first 50 chapters.

I have read both BTTH and WDQK, and this novel is an absolute downgrade. The only reason I'm giving this 3 stars is because I haven't gotten too far in and there might be improvements later on. However, as of chapter 60, this novel barely qualify for 2 stars. <<less

The story is "okay" like another usual xianxia and wuxia novel, but what disappointed me the most is the final battle and the ending.

The story is rushed like "boom" become the top powerhouse in a critical moment (well not in a very critical moment, but quite critical as like they did in BTTH and WDQK where the MC secluded and come out to become the strongest).

The problem is not only that, in the end, there is no explanation for the other character (the most important one is nine nether, she is another important character like luo li but what the... she always accompanying MC from the weakest to the strongest and always help him by lending him power, even she really cared for MC. And author didn't even give her a chance to show up and just make a crappy ending where MC have a daughter with LL and that's it.)

And the Final battle is mixed with the ending like wtf? At least author can make extra chapter for the happy ending for a longer explanation as how the other character doing.

This novel have the lamest ending among the trilogy of BTTH WDQK TGR. To be honest even BTTH and WDQK have the most satisfying ending.

Yeah, not feeling it on this one. It's a chore to read, the MC is too boring (I don't know how else to describe it) and too much is done "off screen". The part of MC earning his bad reputation and making rivals? Off screen. The part of MC falling in love and being together with female lead? Off screen. The power ups before major events? Off screen.

For all the hype the author put into the MC's mother's cultivation method, it is explored by the MC, take a guess, OFF... more>> SCREEN!! Not a novel worth dragging myself through even if I have nothing else to read. <<less

Not sure if I should be reccommending this. I'm huge wuxia/xianxia fan, but I have always been reading novels with female MC. The great ruler is my first novel with male MC.

SPOILER:

I did like reading manhua BTTH and WDKQ (not novels) but I hate the fact, that they ended up with more than one wife. Like.... c'mon, this is not cool, make up your minds and choose one girl!!!

Since The Great Ruler is different I decided to give it a try. Since the novel has more than 1500 chapters, the... more>> writing is a lot inconsistent. As far as storytelling go, the author sometimes has a good day and sometimes he has a nightmare.

The worst thing is the language - this might be problem on the translators side, but they were using the same sentence again and again.

There are 1560 chapters and there is at least once per chapter when someone is commenting: He is not simple.

Mu Chen is not simple.

That youth is not simple.

Okay, he is not simple, but do you need to repeat it again and again? The story is predictable and repetitive. MC start as being relatively weak and he is working his way up, this is likeable, but in more than 1000 chapters he is building up his reputation... just for someone s*upid to fight him and others commenting: Oh he has no background, no one know him, so he's going to die. Oh wait, he's not so simple, so maybe he will win.

And also the novel stated many times that heavenly sovereigns are rare, very rare, the powerhouses! Just for hundreds of them appearing at the novel finale? Guess they are not so rare anymore? <<less

I agree with many reviews here. The story is so-so, the thing that bothered me is the inconsistent editing. There are some very bad typos and simply dumb translation.

I kept seeing the word "cuffed" being used when "cupped" is the correct word. E.g. MC "cupped" his hands in respect to his master. But they were using MC "cuffed" his hands in respect to his master!!!

The story is typical xanxia, underestimated MC becoming powerful. Plot armor and a very lucky MC.
