The reasons were: he was ranked second at home, he had been forever ranked second at school, no matter how diligently he worked and tried, he couldn’t shake off that “second” curse. What was more exasperating was that, at University, not only was he ranked second, but even his appearance that he was proud of had to be classified as second best!

Why can’t I obtain the first place!

The eternal second will rise!

Then, Ye Zhou, after his vigorous efforts finally rises and the result was… the first became his boyfriend.

This is the story of a man who has been forced to be “second” and how he became the first, most popular.

So, plot is basically Character A being misunderstood by liking Character B and character A's friends and the rest of the characters dismissing and disrespecting Character A's explaination (which is bullying at this point). In addition, the Main Characters' relationship felt like fan service for the rest of the characters with how much they stick their noisy ass in people's goddamn relationships, but I don't know about you but if a plot clearly an anger bait fascinates you, well, go on and feast.

Honestly this has a nice concept and if... more>> your purpose is to read some good brainless fluff this is not it, you'd die from frustration. Seriously, there's some good brainless fluff out there without having to frustrate you (have some standard guys, we can't always make an excuse for bad plot or devices use). There's a review here that explains how misunderstanding tropes can be a great writing device if done well and I highly agree, but the way this novel went with it– I can confidently say is so garbage that I'd without hesitation throw myself in a fire just for how frustrating the characters and the plot of this novel is. <<less

So... I finished this story already. I can't write a helping review for you to decide whether to read this or not. But I can help to write my own opinion while I read it?

At first, I was just trying to read anything that could take my interest — because I'll probably drop it after a few chapters, anyway. Too much damsel-in-distress or dependent shou in Chinese BL novels. And it drop a lot of stories from my list. I desided to reading some chapters and somehow hooked by the... more>> way the author writen the friendship between the ML and MC. It's really sweet, I can imagine how their relationship will be going even if it become platonic later — which of course, make me a little bit sour remembering that this is a BL story (because I rather it become platonic than destroying my expectation, really). But, fortunately, the way their relationship progressing did not dissapoint me. It's really balance, between the missunderstanding, the way each characters coped with their feeling, everything flow nicely.

Spoiler

A little bit dissapointed though that it still ending with a little bit depending shou and too superior gong. But at least it's not really severe. So I still can accept it.

[collapse]

Spoiler

And about the ending, if you count it from the 4th extra, it's already quite satisfactory, actually, eventhough it feel a little bit bland. You already got response from all the significant people about their relationship. There is no questions left. So you can rest assure.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Just... why there is only one smut scene!? Like... I know the story want to give me a domestic feeling. But if you only want to give me once, then don't bother give me anything, ah!

Uhuk, sorry. My bad.

This story is great!

I read the two reviews giving it three stars and thought the novel would be average. But in the end, it was a pleasant surprise.

The light and fluent prose and vivid ambiance make the read as easy as breathing while the intelligent and sharp humor brings out smiles to the readers' lips at every few lines.

... more>> However, the most remarkable merit of the novel is the impressive ability of the author to create and depict vivid characters.

The author took the two most classic gong and shou personalities in Danmei and turned them into real people to the point where you feel you could eventually meet them on the streets. Which is quite different from the utopic characters that are frequently present in novels and that could never exist outside of the fictional universe.

The powerful and indifferent male God became someone that actually has personal feelings and thoughts under the aloofness while the whimsical MC is not excessively naive and unreasonable.

Both are intelligent and smart and can hold a conversation while exchanging light jabs with each other, which makes watching their interaction very fun and pleasant.

It is true that their schoolmates are nosy and make a mess out of the misunderstanding at the beginning, but they rarely cross the line to a real invasion of personal space so it doesn't turn unpleasant or aggravating. It is, otherwise, realistic.

Furthermore, they are clearly not being mean or intruding only for their own amus**ent. They are truly trying to give a hand even if it is not needed or requested.

But, above all, the MC is someone with a strong mentality that can healthily and reasonably deal with their interference.

And, as a plus, the ML is not one of the arrogant kind that treats the MC harshly because he thinks the other is trying to curry favors. He observes and understands the situation and is mature enough to not make a mountain out of a molehill.

All in all, it is a great read that is perfectly capable of providing plenty of enjoyable moments.

Also, before I forget, the translation is top quality. :) <<less

Don't know how it'll go later, but I just can't tolerate MC's friends.. How can they decide things for MC on their own ??? They don't believe him, take his phone to open the gallery without permission and show it to others !!! They even changed his room at their own will..

To be honest, were they my friends, I'd have beaten the sh!t out them.. And also the MC.. Why is he so lenient towards them??? It's not funny at all.. How would someone in real life feel had they... more>> have this kind of friends who help spreading rumours!!!

It's just not my cup of tea.. I wanted to complete it.. But just the first tens of chapters are making me frustrated.. <<less

What drew my attention to this novel was its synopsis. Initially, I thought that the story was quite cute and comedic. Unfortunately, that impression soured almost immediately when I found myself getting progressively more irritated the more I read. I had been looking forward to reading it too!

I think that it's normal as readers to look for relatable traits or attributes in the characters we read about. The reason for this is simply so that we can better understand, empathize and connect with the characters. This would then enable... more>> us to further invest ourselves into the contents of the novel and in all, make reading all the more enjoyable!

Sadly, in the case of this novel, it was exactly those reasons listed above -- that would normally help me to enjoy a novel-- that hindered me from further reading. It was incredibly frustrating for me to even sit through the first few chapters because of how well I could relate to MC's circumstances of being misunderstood. I was especially put off by the lack of listening and communication between MC and his "friends" + ML. The entire encounter was incredibly uncomfortable for me to read (it felt very toxic).

Now we could say that, "Misunderstandings occur everywhere in media!" And they do. 'Misunderstandings' isn't an unusual trope in media. The concept has appeared countless times in novels, films and other entertainment content alike in order to help drive the plot. It is often used and intended to create the drama and angst that we see so much in soap operas, dog blood novels and such (it has the ability to 'spice' things up). So! I am not saying that the misunderstanding trope is terrible nor do I despise it. I am simply saying that I believe there is a better way the author could have written and utilized the trope in the novel.

For instance, some novels that utilize the trope first issue a reasonable sort of circumstantial restriction to cause the misunderstanding. This would then lead to a lack of communication between two or a group of characters. The novels often give reason for a character's behavior and why there is a cut in communication.

However, in the case of this novel, I feel that it does not flesh out the misunderstanding as well as others that I've read. There is no real reason why the characters refuse to listen to MC. It's not as if they're deliberately sabotaging their ability to hear out of spite for the MC, nor is there any reason why the MC's words are worth disregarding (like is he pied piper? The novel doesn't state that he's some sort of psychopathic liar) SO there really is no reason for his 'friends' to not value MC's opinion unless the author wants to paint them as terrible 'friends' and communicators which is what I'm getting. Frankly, had the novel not already established their relationships, it would've been difficult for me to tell whether this scene involved MC's friends or if this was just another case of bullying.

To crudely sum it up, I highly disliked the characters and reading this annoyed the flip outta me so instead of continuing, I'm going to look for something I think is actually worth my time.

This was only my experience. You may not feel the same things or relate to the MC in the same way I did. As the (hopefully) mature people we are, let's respect others opinions and not be unreasonably difficult just because you see that somebody doesn't think like you. On that note, whether or not you enjoy this novel in the end is all down to preference. Happy reading! <<less

Fluffy, and surprisingly one of my favorite stories I've ever read. I even came back to reread only one specific part but by the time I looked up from the screen I had reread the entire thing!

Plot isn't quite unique, or even special. As the summary states everyone is convinced MC is in love with ML and the resulting commotion is a hilarious romcom set in modern day university. However I greatly appreciate the realistic bitterness that comes up from their family issues, and while the entire university is gunho... more>> about their relationship, society isn't so accepting (aka parents). However, the true standout is the characterization and the way the characters interact! Both MC and ML mesh very well together, and their ensemble of friends Are hilarious. From ML's kinda subtle hints that he likes MC, to the way the banter between even the friends and the main characters feel authentic and organic. The friends feel like an actual group of friends and not just background characters for the sake of it. My personal favorite scene being when one background character speaks like a wuxia novel and MC matches his way of speaking!

it's almost shocking how much I enjoyed this novel, I truly do suggest you give it a shot. <<less

This is such a cute story!

Our MC is so hilarious, a natural airhead and our ML is a god sent gorgeous iceberg and together they make a very funny combi!

But the most funny part is how their surrounding (the whole school actually) misunderstood them and always tried hard to create opportunities for them omg I can't stop laughing reading this one ???

The translator did a very good job delivering this story too, congratulations!

With the good rating (yes I know, you should never trust the reviews on novelupdates) + synopsis, I was expecting a cute and funny story started by a big misunderstanding. Which sounds interesting.

But 10 chapters in, and all I can feel is anger and frustration. MC's "friends" and classmates are pushy and clearly don't respect MC in the slightest. They don't even bother listening to him and make decisions for him. Grabbing someone's phone, checking their pictures and showing them to the entire class is not funny nor it is... more>> an okay thing to do. I know some readers won't mind because they won't take this story seriously, but I just can't. This isn't fun. Not only MC has a shit, abusive family at home, but he also has sh*t "friends" at school. F*ck that. Heck, I know I'm dropping this very early, but even the ML doesn't have a single good trait. He's honestly an a**hole. He knows MC is getting harrassed over a misunderstanding and won't even try to help the guy. He secretely mocks him then leaves. I only care about MC, but despite his interesting personality he just lets others push him around and laugh at him like he's some sort of clown in a circus. I could endure and keep reading (I've done that plenty of times, didn't like the first 10-20 but kept reading bc I knew it would have a great plot/ending), but judging by some of the comments it only gets worse. And the main couple isn't even worth it! So what's the point? I'm gonna suffer more chapters just for a dry romance with a ML I don't even like. Anyways, I definitely don't recommend this one. <<less

Ahh, this is like balm for the soul~

Tired of revenge/face-slapping novels?

Tired of yandere/possessive/controlling/self-centered MLs?

This is a humorous and fluffy slice-of-life college romance that starts from a misunderstanding between the MC and ML who are both outstanding, handsome and intelligent students. The story takes us through the university life of the two students, to moving-out and coming-out, and attending grad school. The side characters (dorm mates) are absolutely precious and hilarious.
Spoiler

It's so cute that despite the MC being forever 'second place' in terms of studies/competitions, he's actually extremely friendly/outgoing/valued by his community, so his interpersonal skills can be said to definitely outshine the ML.

[collapse]

The relationship progression is a sweet slow-burn. The author builds up a true friendship and trust between the main characters, so it avoids over-used tropes like "the vinegar-bucket ML can't stand other people appreciating the MC." This is one of the few really positive relationships I've seen in CNovels where the two people in a relationship not only bring out the best in each other and wholeheartedly support each other, but also give each other space and mutual trust.

Spoiler

It's unfortunate but most CN books completely romanticize r*pe/obsession/stalking/stockholm syndrome/dependent personality disorder/possessiveness etc. So the romantic relationships portrayed tend to be extremely unrealistic as well as unhealthy.

[collapse]

Fantastic translation, the humor comes across on point. I would re-read!

Two guys get harassed because guy A took a picture of guy B so he can exchange the photo for one of guy C. A likes C, but everyone is convinced that he likes B and they keep forcing them together.
Spoiler

They moved A's stuff into B's room. B was okay with it, but still.

Over time, the two do seem to become more comfortable with each other, but I can't bring myself to like it. Especially because of the cringeworthy comments you can find. It just isn't for me.

Had to drop this because I got too annoyed at how overly invested the side characters are in the MC & ML's relationship, like most other negative reviewers did.

Rather than developing a meaningful relationship, the main characters' dynamic was more like a public spectacle. Like initially, other people's intervention was fine to get things started, but it just kept going and going lol.

To each their own though, I can see how this story could be cute to other readers.

Others might find MC's friends funny but for me they're really annoying. I tried to keep reading but the more I read, the more I grew to dislike them. They keep denying MC's explanation and deciding for MC without his consent. I was in MC's position once and I hate every second of it. No one listen what I actually want and think they know what's best for me. So I stop reading not even halfway because I don't see MC's friend respecting his wish.

I have to say I am extremely disappointed and frustrated. I thought by the reviews and ratings that this would be a good Slice of Life read but really it just left me angry and frustrated.
Spoiler

The MC's friends and classmates assume he likes the ML only because he secretly took pictures of him to trade for pictures of someone he DOES like. Then nobody takes his word for it and keep trying to push them together. And the ML barely helps to clarify and just let it continue and the MC is frustrating for not rebuking everyone saying he likes the ML, when he doesn't.

I have never been this annoyed by the characters before... the misunderstanding was totally annoying, and mc's friends act like they were helping him, when at the same time, they never listen to anything he said, , , I was totally annoyed by them, , , I dont understand why people think this story is funny and fluffy... if I'm in mc's situation, I will be very dissappointed and sad if my friends acted like this towards me... maybe this novel is just not my cup of tea...

Easy slice of life read about a campus couple. Has enough fluff and humor, but also will treat you to some heart-wrenching sad moments.

As many stories, this one starts with a misunderstanding. But later both MC and ML evolve genuine feelings towards each other, clearing the prejudice. I really like this part about it, because not everything starts off the bat.

Loved the more realistic take on different opinions about same s*x couples. While campus youngsters didn't really bother about it, since they knew their mates for quite some time they... more>> gave their blessings, family members didn't take it so well, who needed a long time to accept, who couldn't accept at all. I've never wrote a review yet I'm so annoyed by this story extras and ending I feel I have to vent.

I was going to give it 3 stars thinking I shouldn't be strict because it's a slice of life and I shouldn't be harsh just because I don't like the genre but srsly just because it's a slice of life does it have to be SO VERY BORING !!!

its supposed to be the easy going kind of plot with no real conflict and overdose of drama and believe me I've... more>> read a lot great novels with no real complicated plot so it can be done. This one is just too boring with no passion except for the passion of defending gays right, and not even that was done nicely.

ppl keep saying it's fluffy but it's not really every single event that should have been romantic was written dryly

Spoiler

when confessing boy was that boring there wasn't much giving of the ML feelings before it. MC had the most s*upid reason for not understanding his feelings towards ml, and when they finally got together there wasn't that fluffy or passionate reaction I don't think it was realistic either

The event in which their friend kept misunderstanding their relationship was funny and realistic at first but afterward it just got s*upid I mean who would think he's smashing a car with a duster and who the h*ll cleans a car roof with a duster!! These are students of a high level university not KG kids.

their first time the fudge is with this sho he just had his first kiss recently and most likely was a top since his first love was apparently a bottom yet he was so accepting and fast to ask foe a second just cause he was loose and it's a waste just to do it once, , even if you want to think well yeah there are ppl like that but This is a novel couldn't the author just this once in this major event add little fluff and romantic feeling to it just leave realism to the family issues and the being gay thing, , humph

and finally when the ML proposed, , if that was even a proposal I mean what does the author want, , srsly I only got the feeling that they are way too serious and boring "sigh"

[collapse]

the extra were no extra it was the author making up for the loose end in the plot and not even a satisfying one, the last extra just made me explode that I took the time to write this review

Spoiler

the lady was starting to appeal to us when the author decided to show her as a proud b*ch only to afterward only confirm that she's going to be the sister in low to the brother who is a nice character, , ahdifjfiendk ?

[collapse]

htis is only talking about the romantic side didn't get to the writing style, , 1 star it is but if you like slice of life yaoi, , this might be to your liking <<less

This story is cute but in my opinion isn’t for everyone. Don’t mean to be a downer but I started this novel empathizing too much with the protagonist and it completely ruined my experience. I’ve been in situations where I’m misunderstood in similar ways and no one would believe me, so reading this made me remember the feeling in those times and become as genuinely angry as the protag. Don’t recommend this if you read in “first person view” and sympathize too much with the main character, it will feel... more>> very forced. <<less

Oh God, really, actually i've read this story quite some time ago, and forgot to write a review or vote it. But now, when I scroll about my reading list I saw this and I think I should vote and write a review for this one, because it'd be a waste if such an amazing story not to be voted and such a waste if I didnt share the greatness of this story LOL.

It's damn hillarious, a comedy among comedy BL novel I think? LOL. The narration, the interaction, the... more>> thoughts of the character are amazingly funny. But still, despite the good laugh its offering, there's also some seriousness in it, a bit love problem, family drama, jealousy, and quarrel. But all of that are resolved in a great way. It's well balanced story. But still, the whole story is a troll and hillarious LOL, really I remember I couldnt stop laughing, giggling, and smacking my table when I read this one a while ago.

The character are lovables, whether it's MC, ML, or even secondary character. They have a 3D personality, means the character building are done pretty well. Once again, I find "a cool, male god, multi talented, soft hearted, but amazingly normal guy ML", that's not a black bellied, or overbearing CEO, and crazy possesive or rapist. Truly a given ahhhh. You know its really painful when a story you like somehow has a rapist and yandere ML righttt? And you dont have to worry about a poisonous female bit*h that BL novels usually have LOL, cause the female in here are normal, the normal female in the reality, not an exaggerated love rival scheming bit*h who hates the MC that BL novels usually portrayed.

The problem the MC facing are understandable, the love-hate realtionship at the beginning between MC and ML is understandable, the family issues also understandable. You know, its happening in reality. Some family really are abandoning their children for a foolish reason like wanting their child to be number one and comparing their child one after another, especially for Asian mom LOL. Believe me, some Asian mom really likes to compare their child to another child, LOL. It's one of the best BL/danmei novel with a modern theme i've read so far. Different from the general idea, when a modern BL novel usually have a dog blood drama, angsty, society perceptive, homophobic, and family refusal, that kind of drag of waaaay too long. This novel does has the issues about family acceptance, but it's not dragging too long and not way too dramatic, you know where MC and ML got separated because of the family. So, if you want a good read, a comedic one, and a good ending but with a proper plot, this is for you.

Give it a try, I guarantee you won't waste your time for nothing. <<less

what a read!! Both of our MC and ML are clear-headed and very smart, they have strong personality but somehow are compatible with each other.

the story of them progressing from (one-sided) enemies to friends, to finally falling in love with each other is very well written. Their couple dynamic is very warm and domestic that it makes you jealous. All the side characters are funny and essential in making the story more interesting and hilarious.

I love it a lot, it was a very nice read!

It's a cute fluffy school romance comedy akin to Hana Kimi or any typical shoujo. It's full of misunderstandings that eventually brings the main protagonists together. The entire story is comfortable and well paced. The side characters are funny and full of personality. The ending is especially satisfying since it neatly wraps up all the storylines. The last 20 chapters is essentially an extended "happily ever after".

I rated this novel 4 stars instead of 5 since there's nothing new or unique about this novel. It's your classic story with all... more>> the tropes and stereotypes, but packaged nicely. The MC is insecure and tsun, the ML is confident and perfect. As usually, the ML is much smarter and better than the MC in almost every way (except the MC is better at cleaning?). The plot progresses as expected after the first chapter.

While this is not a must read, I would recommend reading this novel if you have the time. It's fluffy and cute but also easy to read. Oftentimes, the downside of reading BL novels is the poor writing, but this novel is entirely translated and of high quality. <<less

This is not an earth shattering "will make you rethink your life, the world and the universe" type of novel, but it's a sweet, funny and warm slice-of-life one, and sometimes this is just what we need.

It starts with a classic silly premises of misunderstanding (literally, the title) but then gets filled with good characters who react like normal human beings, evolve and grow like normal human beings, sometimes have complex emotions like normal human beings, have problems like normal human beings and solve them like normal human beings...

It has... more>> good pacing, sweet moments, smart characters and it doesn't drag. A really enjoyable read. <<less
