I really enjoyed the novel, but some actions of the ML gave me the icky, I was kinda turning a blind eye because he is possessive, and some of his behavior are "normal" in this kind of settings, but in this scene...

He Jin was nervous and he looked pale. He switched on his bracelet and was going to call Duan Shurong. Qin Yang saw what he's doing through the rearview, and he threatened He Jin, "if you dare to call her, I'll r*pe you right here and right now!"

I swear to God, I didn't drop the novel just because I was just missing like 5-10 chapter to finish the novel.

I'm just rating this novel a 4 because I really enjoyed the beginning and the middle of the novel.

Spoiler

I think the story should have ended a little after they got together the first time.

I guess this novel was okay although it was not up to my expectations. The first few chapters were good and as I kept reading, the novel lost its glamour. It was only in the later chapters it got better again. The plot line in the middle of the novel is a bit dull.

I think the best thing about this book is how it explains the challenges faced by homos*xual couples. It was so heart breaking. MC and ML had to go through a lot to finally find their happiness.... more>> They both had to suffer because of society and because of their own family members.

All in all this novel is worth reading. <<less

This story is so wholesome. I literally cries, laugh, and relates throughout the story. I would recommend. This is the best novel yet I've read which have online gaming as a tag and makes me addicted to it. Thank you very much.

Danmei in the modern era whose main focus is slide of life MC & ML with the theme of online games.

Hmm, the online game takes the setting and system of Chinese mystical legends like those in the drama series Love Between Fairy and Devil.

The plot of the story goes up and down from sweet then conflict then sweet then conflict until the last part I cried at the last conflict...

Happy Ending with a timeline of 8 years waiting plus 3 years...

The first half of the novel is great but then it goes downhill slowly... slowly.

I absolutely adore the ML and I know some people disliked him but you all forget there is a black belly tag, so you can't act surprised when the ML made those decisions.

The MC on the other hand I feel like is written poorly. His actions often betray his thoughts and vice versa and his emotions are never consistent with his character. He is also too stubborn to a point where its annoying.

Towards the end, the... more>> novel was dragging out and lost its touch, it was upsetting since the plot and setting of the novel was very intriguing.

Any novel where I end up liking the ML more than the MC is a no for me.

I appreciate and thank the second translator who picked it up. But I feel that the tler changing midway also contributed to me not liking the novel but who knows. <<less

Oh my goodness where to begin!

This deserves at least 4.7 it's so good I read it all in 3 days.

This novel suprised me with how much I liked the male lead, he was so dedicated and truly loved MC.

And oh my goodness the writing, thank you translators. The relationship with MC and his controlling mum could not have been more realistic, brought me to tears multiple times. This is definitely a more mature story than you think it is. The MC makes total sense to hope he was brought up... more>> and we get to see him change to become more confident.

It's only fault is that it needs a second book or something 😣 I actually came here for their domestic life but that was so brief.

(Also ML is a bit domineering at times which people above mentioned but I feel like they are not looking at full picture, like MC is not weak he is pretty shy and closed off)

Tldr, if you like smart couples, young adult couple coming of age, a story which actually addresses h*mophobia and the changings of parents attitudes, cute role playing in game, op and extremely patient ml, and also sometimes really adorably not cheesy at all MC then plz read. <<less

for me, it was a good story. Very cute and a satisfying long read. Its a little bit of funny, happy and sad. It covers realistic struggles in real life and overall alot of emotional stuff. I love the way they potrayed their love for each other. Not so stereotypical and it was pretty decent. Does have some major triggers. But all and all a nice story.

Basically, the MC breaks up with the ML s*upidly just to go back to his toxic family. When he only finally left his family for a better life. He truly loves throwing his own pity parties and sabotaging himself.

That being said, I can understand (while not me personally, but from his own personality) why he felt the need to go back and be a good son, however there was absolutely no need for him to leave the ML cos he felt inferior.

The ML also had a rough past and I mean his actions being stalkerish, and etc. But I genuinely believe if the MC rejected him he would have given up as he absolutely adores the MC. (This doesn’t excuse some of his past actions but he is, in my opinion more likeable than the MC and not as bad as some reviews make him out to be. I stand by the fact he would have left the MC alone if the MC rejected him, because when they broke up briefly he didn’t try to force himself back into the MC’s life for three years).

Anyways, for me personally I couldn’t stand the MC. I just would never allow myself to be disrespected and treated like dirt just to please my parents especially if my own mother was threatening her death and su*cide against me. He can’t make up his mind and when he does he chooses to make his own life difficult for him. No sympathy here.

So here's my take on this Danmei. I'd first like to say that you'll prolly hate some parts/characters. This Danmei is gonna have to be up your lane if you wanna like it. Are you okay with an obsessive ML? A "weak" MC? Strict parents, deep subjects, and lame character development sometimes, and some other things? If your okay with these I'm sure you'll like this story. The ML is definitely obsessive but he also has his sweet moments. The MC is in my opinion very realistic, but that's not... more>> what I'm looking for in Danmei's. I'm not too interested in the realism and just want to read an idealistic Danmei with some angst, overall though, it wasn't too bad because the MC had some other redeeming qualities. As a Chinese, the parents definitely make sense. My own parents are against LGBTQ+ themselves so I've been hiding my asexuality as just "no one I like right now". There are deep subjects like depression and so on, but I was okay with it, and the poor character development at some parts. MC had some... Slow character development. You think he changed and SIKE he didn't. But then more character development happens about ?170? (Not 100% sure) Chapters in and he gets better and he's redeemed. All in all, as long as this fits the kind of novel you wanna read, your gonna like it. I'm an angst fan though so I liked it whoops (@_@") <<less

I like it! The whole story is great. The plot, the story line, and the characters. The scenes in the game and in real life is just balanced.👌I really like the gameplay, it makes me want to play something like that too. The development between characters are shown, it's really great <33 The thing I liked the most is Ah Jin's character development. At first, he was just a very obedient son, he doesn't really go against his mother's will, almost his whole life, he doesn't have a freedom, which... more>> is very pitiful 😩. I find it satisfying when he started to rebel, he tried doing things he did not do before because of his mom. The ML, I have nothing against him, although he was kind of obsessed with the MC, he tried his best to not disrespect him, he always does what he thinks He Jin would approve. I also kinda pity him, he waited for MC for sooo long, fortunately none of these were in vain, they got the happy ending that they deserved.💓 All the problems are resolved including MC's mom, at first I was really angry at her but, I suddenly felt pity for her after knowing the reason why she was like that 🤧 I was also very sad because of it. All in all, this is a very good novel, I definitely recommend it, 💕 and that's it, I have nothing more to say mhm. (◡ ‿ ◡) <<less

This was my first modern BL and will be always little bias towards it... tbh.. I have read many BL following this and have found many favorites too but I always think back about the MC's character here- that clean, meticulous, sincere, honest, don't want to owe any one type, making a clear boundary with people and have little low self esteem thing. I felt his character so ordinary that it's too real, it's not a perfect character but I could relate with him, I felt like I was reading... more>> about a real person. ML is also one of the sweetest character, inexperience yet he tries his best to accommodate with the MC. To them everything was new thus the story is fresh and moving.

I don't know why.. I had a feeling of wanting to protect and hide this couple somewhere safe.

This will be always one of my favorite.. I love it. <<less

This was a good one. I hesitated to start it because it sounded really similar to Guide to Online Dating which I read recently. It is somewhat similar as far as the premise and general plot line goes, but this stands out as different in the game part. This is sci-fi. Also there are less “misunderstandings.” Unfortunately I had to drop it because the MC (shou) has a toxic, emotionally abusive mother and it was triggering. Anyway, if you can handle that, I recommend this story. I had no qualms... more>> as far as I read. <<less

Must read if you love this author. My other top pick of her's is Assistant Architect. Highly recommend all her works and wish they were all translated bc she has many novels under her belt.

Waiting for You Online leans more towards puppy love, and dealing with major angst about societal acceptance and parental approval, in addition to self doubt, while young and uncertain about s*xual orientation.

Like with anything overly angsty, it makes the sweetness more rewarding.

I did not read this novel for a long time after I discovered it. I was not into games themed novels. However, I finally gave it a shot and I did not regret a bit. Every part, every chapter is very interesting, no boring parts nor cringy parts. Though I was frustrated for some time over some characters' behaviors, the later explanations turned out to be quite reasonable. I admire the ML's loyalty and unwavering patience, one which spans for a decade, I also sympathize with him for this very... more>> reason. <<less

I don't know why I kept it for so long in my reading list!

This story is just simply awesome.

Has little faults like ML thinks of forcing MC but doesn't do so...

... more>> ML is pretty weak but that is completely justified.

And this story isn't like others where despite being two males society accept them wholeheartedly... Here they face problems and what not and the best or worst thing is in reality this actually happens...

This story is in a way closest to reality yaoi I have ever read

Just thank God that it isn't tragedy I would have died from heartbreak then <<less

Making an account finally (after reading so many books on novelupdates) just to make this post lol..

I'm still in emotional turmoil. It was extremely triggering for me. My relationship with my family is very similar to MC's with his family. I actually don't know anyone else who has experienced such an intensely controlling parent (of course many asian parents tend to be controlling, but my mom is more extreme, uncannily similar to MC's mom). The author does a really good job of capturing the complex emotions one experiences in the... more>> process of breaking away. For people who felt that the familial storyline was flat - I can say it's because you've been fortunate enough to not have lived a dead life where you're alive but not really living, you're in survival/obedient/robotic/repress all desires mode because of an oppressive/controlling environment.. MC might seem wishy washy and weak to you, but when I read this I felt like he was stronger than me in many ways.

mild spoiler:

Spoiler

I also tasted freedom for the first time in college, and lived a double life of lying to my mom (similar to MC I was never doing anything bad, my mom was just too controlling so if I wanted to do anything besides studying I had to lie). Once I tasted freedom I couldn't go back to living like a robot/puppet so I decided I needed to stand up for myself, starting with my career choice and that was a battle that dragged out for months and during the process I became depressed and suicidal (combination of pressure from home, pressure from schoolwork because sudden change in major and stress from job finding process). I didn't know my mom was also depressed until my mom attempted su*cide after my brother slammed the door after an argument about girlfriend/marriage.

When I graduated from college I cut communication with my family for two years. I knew that this could mean I never saw my mom again, but I was able to make this choice partially because of emotional support from my boyfriend's family (mostly them taking the time to understand my situation and help sanity check that this was the right choice for me), and because I knew that I'd rather die than go back to living the way I used to [so it wasn't MC's choice which was his happiness vs his mother's life, but rather my life vs my mom's life, and tbh looking back me cutting communication for two years probably hurt her less than if I had committed su*cide].

I've reconnected with them and we have a shaky relationship.. I guess I did the opposite of what MC did. He chose family and helped his mom get therapy and reassures her by saying he will never leave her. I left my family, and have reconnected but the threat of me leaving again is just around the corner and helps keep my mom from being too controlling. I wish therapy was an option for us. My mom even now doesn't believe in depression or therapy and there's no reasoning with her..

fyi: I am female and straight, my parents are isolated immigrants and extremely religious (cult influenced ideologies), the main points of contention with my parents were: career, marriage, money, religion.

[collapse]

more explicit spoiler:

Spoiler

Also of course when I was reading MC's choice to choose his family over his happiness (aka breaking up with ML and returning to be an obedient robot) I felt that it was the wrong choice, but I really respect his maturity and strength. It's something I never could've done. It might seem dumb, but he had only fallen in love once, he had no way of knowing that he wouldn't be able to fall in love again so given that, I feel like his choice to leave ML was very rational

[collapse]

I appreciate knowing that I'm not alone in my experience seeing as how accurately it was captured in this book (seriously I am so shook how accurately MC's mom's personality is depicted). I'm glad I read this but not sure if I would re-read it, and it also wouldn't be a go-to recc for others.

In terms of the ML character, premise, world building etc I think it was really good (like hard to put down the book because it's so fun and a lot of touching moments) but not exactly masterful (some rough areas as other comments point out). In terms of MC's interaction with his mom and how accurately the process was depicted - definitely masterful. Pacing I think is pretty good and I wouldn't change anything about it, although I know some people think it's slow. <<less

I put off reading this for a long time until 2 days prior. So far I like the story overall. The internal struggle of the MC is quite realistic and relatable for most people in the LGBTQ+ community especially those who grew up in a relatively conservative community. His insecurities and his fears are understandable considering his upbringing. His potential to grow out of these is something to look forward to (hopefully we see this in the succeeding chapters, which I guess will happen based on the other reviews). I'd... more>> like him to have a happy ending, not only in the love aspect but also as an individual. That he gain enough confidence so that he can believe in a better future for himself and also to rely and trust on ML's feelings for him. ML's loyalty and his desperation to hold on to MC is quite adorable and pitiable at times as he continues to try to understand MC and give him a lot of leeway in terms of MC's behavior when they start dating. Although MC is not deliberately testing just how ML loves him or up to what length ML will go for him, I hope that ML does not grow tired in the long run as I feel MC will become more insecure and fearful as the story progresses before reconciling and overcoming his internal struggles. <<less
