The side characters are interesting, the MC is not, and neither are the witches. Witches act out of character when it comes to romance, and so does everyone else. It's a power fantasy because MC conquers everything using technological advantages. It tries to build an intricate plot where things can happen in various different ways, but most of the times the "revelation" is quite obvious and the protagonists are dealt with too impersonally so that their choices, although explained, have very little emotional impact. The cast of characters is quite... more>> big and it keeps growing, their personas are interesting but since this novel never goes in depth with any of its characters I think it is better that they end up just as "tools" with a short interesting description to them. They appear recurrently and are mostly there to advance the plot or make it more thrilling, sometimes it is better to see the war from a gunner's perspective rather than that of the supreme commander.

A rather weird issue is that the MC gets his population to get civilized rather too easily. It doesn't really tackle any social issues, they are mostly solved automagically:

Author: So corruption, theft, etc. Gets solved by hiring more policemen and giving people jobs.
Reader: Okay, but what if the police becomes corrupt too?
Author: Well, no problem, just punish those that did, problem solved.
Reader: What if you can't find corruption so easily to punish it?
Author: Uuuhm, double-entry bookkeeping and written signed documents! Wait no, that would create too much bureaucracy that would encumber the system. Uhhhhh, I'll just mention this and pretend that things are working.

Seriously, the MC mentions this in a similar way. The author is rather opinionated in terms of how society works and what the solutions are for various issues, but since we never go in-depth with the characters the dissociation between the characters and their actions is not necessarily obvious. <<less

What this novel so desperately needs is an AI system/chip ala Warlock of Magus World or When A Mage Revolts. Without such systems, all you can see is how an engineer suddenly acquire talents in disciplines he obviously has never learned on Earth such as micro-economic theories, mass-scale agricultural methods, socio-political systems et. Al.

If only the MC has such systems, the author can then concentrate on writing stories about saving witches, warring with other royal siblings, going against the church and monsters et. Al. Instead, what you will see here... more>> is constant breaking of suspension of disbelief. <<less

This is an excellent novel, with high degree of difficulty but good execution nonetheless. Because of it's high difficulty, it can't be perfect, because what's "perfect" depends on the reader's understanding of the world in some extent. For example, even though the knowledge of the MC is at least on par, and usually beyond mine, on certain situations I'm a bit frustrated by things he didn't do or think of. Also in certain occasions, author goes a bit overboard with his chemistry explanation, but I don't particularly dislike that (I... more>> hope that at least, there are no serious errors there, as chemistry was never my subject).

Now, more on the inside story, the novel develops many character besides the MC and main crew in general. Not only it develops them, but it gives them very complete personalities and is not afraid to 'expend' some of them. This is a very impressive thing.
As far as the plot goes, for a large number of chapters the plot was becoming more and more complex and mysterious, but when the answers started coming, everything began to fit very well with each other. It's a given that the plot was very well thought in advance.
Regarding romance, even though there is the harem element in general, there's no question who the main heroine is, and she's very worth of her position as well.

Even though I still have a long way to catch up and I don't know how far it will go, from what've read, I don't thing there are many ways for the story to go wrong. I highly trust that the ending will be successful as well. There's even some potential for some rare twists, but I don't think the author will go that far to displease the majority of the readers.

To sum up, this is a highly recommended novel as long as someone doesn't dislike the main theme for some particular reason.

[c390 -> c564]
It continues being consistent with it's mystery and world building <<less

Best web novel I have read. Handles the reincarnation scenario better than any other novel.
Spoiler

Translation - Very strong, scentences flow easily and very few errors especialy surprising considering the complex scientific terminology ofetn used.

Concept - Broken down to its core its about someone using his scientific knowledge and combining it the magic of others to advance society and build a kingdom. It holds up surprisingly well now over 400 chapters in still seeing gradual and realistic advances and its exciting to see their impact on the world.

The simultaneous downside and charm of the novel is the level of detail the author goes to when describing how breakthroughs occur and the science behind them. Sometimes you feel like skipping a lot of the jargon but you would absolutely miss it if it wasn't there.

Story - An interlocking web of protagonists that feel real and dangerous. The church as an entity is the most fearsome and interesting but lacks fleshed out enemies so the few times the writer choses to write from their perspective is actually the least interesting parts.

The character development of most characters is superb. Nearly everyone is distinct and believable. Even two of the traders who are minor side characters feel alive and make you enjoy reading their perspective and anticipating their next arrival in the story. The most dissapointing character for me is the primary love interest who the author is trying to write as dignified and awe inspiring but often just comes off as a bit wooden. When compared to many of the other witches (Nightingale, Lightning, Maggie) she is just a bit dull.

Overall - A reincarnation novel with a great concept and characters that uses very few of the usual tropes. The story stays strong throughout and does not suffer from the usual overpowered protagonists in these types of novels.

The novel is certainly enjoyable to me and lots of other people. Of course it doesn't apply to everyone, but not everybody likes the same things. I enjoy reactions chapters no matter how predictable it is (take this with a grain of salt) because wiping off the smug off antagonists' faces are the sh*t to me. Now let's go to the novel itself.

Characters

There are many memorable characters that have been well fleshed out and have a distinct personality of their own such as Lightning, Nightingale, and my favorite -... more>> Maggie. Yes, some are lost in the background, but you can't possibly have to give every character chapters worth of character development because then the story won't progress at all. The antagonists aren't the best, but they're certainly not the worst. I say they are better than most of the novels here in novelupdates. Overall, the characters aren't so one dimensions so I say I like this part a lot. Their interactions is also what lead to me to like this novel even more.

Logic

Yes, he is definitely a genius when you think of his memory and knowledge of so many things even though he was just a mechanical engineer. Nonetheless, some of the reviews called him a chemist, general, etc which is completely false. He doesn't know war tactics, his chemistry level isn't that advanced and let's remember this isn't the United States's high school education. Telling soldiers to shoot their canons and guns doesn't mean war tactics. It just mean you're as incompetent as it gets if you think it takes a general to do that. Things like remembering plays and their scripts though is not logical whatsoever. I think the putting down the OPness of the MC would've made the story a lot better.

Writing

The author sometimes put loads of unnecessary things in paragraphs which I often skip. He really doesn't have to explain every single thing to make the MC seem smarter than he really is. Other than that it's alright.

Other Reviews

Saw a review of calling this a mildly lefty feminist which made me chuckled quite a bit. Having witches in the story being all females does not mean the author is a feminist. Besides the fact that translation isn't up to the raw releases, we don't why it is all female. What we do know is that whenever the word witch is mentioned, we usually think of female since 80 percent of witch hangings were females back then. The author could've just ignored the research on that or there may actually be a reason we don't know. However, simply the fact that people go straight to calling the author a feminist makes no absolute sense at all. Like how the f*ck does having witches being female in the story make him a feminist? Do people not know what feminists are? You're just as bad as those third wave feminism degenerates.

Conclusion

Great novel, but could be better. Not the greatest in its genre, but still an enjoyable read. <<less

A pretty interesting story. I'm glad the main character doesn't follow the overpowered, super-virtuous, no idea of the feelings of those around him, wants to keep a low profile trope. The premise of the story is interesting and the characters are likable.

My only complaint is that the MC has a ridiculous amount of chemistry knowledge. Since he's a mechanical engineer from the 21st century it makes more sense for him to take ideas and quickly develop them and have a decent understanding of chemistry/biology/business/military, but being able to write a... more>> chemistry textbook or know everything of the top of his head is going a bit too far. <<less

This novel is the best Chinese web novels I've read so far. I've stopped reading many others, decreasing my reading list entries to three, but this novel will increase it back by one.

Unlike typical Chinese web novels, which are usually centered around cultivation and power ups, this novel is more like western fantasy. The amazing this is that, even though it's a web novel, I get the impression of reading a finished book--the story flows really well for something that gets updated daily. I also find it refreshing that occasionally... more>> the story is told from other characters' perspective, unlike most other novels that are laser-focused on the main character.

Lastly, the translation is just superb. When I read it, it didn't feel like I was reading a translation at all. Kudos to the translation team! <<less

It has a little of the GoT feel to it. There's a lot of politics, and we get to know the world through a lot of different people / factions point of view. In one way it makes the story kind of slow, but I never find it boring. One benefit is that characters gets a lot more development than ordinary for the vast majority of web novels.

I love the whole premise of the story. There's a strong focus on the superior technological advancement our protagonist brings to the story.... more>> It kind of feels like playing Civilization on easier difficulties with a strong focus on science, musketeer tech vs opponents with axemen. We're not just talking military advancement, but all facets of how important technology is to the advancement of civilizations. It's also rather in depth, there's obviously a lot of intermediate steps which needs to be solved in order to advance technology, how to get a hold of materials in medieval times, quality of production, machinery etc. I usually find myself pondering myself how I'd approach all these small problems, and what sort of solutions are feasible considering the setting.

It also doesn't repeat information, or get into explaining obvious details which is all to common for the majority of WNs.

The release frequency is also pretty high, probably because it's gotten rather popular and there seems to be a ton of donations ensuring that we're getting new chapters almost daily. Overall I find a very enjoyable read ranking as my top one currently, I really don't have any complaints at all. <<less

Synopsis: MC is a modern day mechanical engineer who is reincarnated/transmigrated (?) into the body of a prince in an alternate fantasy world. He starts off with a great disadvantage while having to survive against his siblings, who are in a battle to win the right to inherit the throne, a religious organization with mysterious motives, and other threats. He discovers that magic is real, performed by witches hunted by the Church. MC uses his memory of modern science and technology, in addition to the abilities of witches, to revolutionize... more>> his territory and face the coming battles. Genre/Features: Reincarnation, medieval fantasy world (no demi-humans, or magical creatures so far). Magic restricted to handful of females called witches. Nation building, delving in chemistry and engineering. Factional confrontations (royal siblings, church with ulterior motives). Some romance, slow progression with some larger steps later on, as of c198. Potential harem, but no definitive progress, yet. MC is not OP, does not have superhuman fighting abilities. Issues: There are a few chapters where very minor characters might slightly flesh out parts of the universe, but they wouldn't matter very much if those chapters went missing. I didn't get much of a feel for his personality in his previous life, and whether it affected his new life. It's mostly his knowledge that plays a role in the new life. I thought the science and engineering was a nice touch for the nation building aspect, but maybe it can be too much for a few readers. MC discovers magic is real in this fantasy world, and can't reconcile it with the laws of physics, but repeatedly emphasizes that the religions are BS. He's right to be skeptical, but it makes him seem hypocritical when he overdoes it. Translation: 4/5
[[5/5 = Minor spelling and grammar errors. 4/5 = occasional serious grammar errors, may need to reread sentences, but no loss of meaning. 3/5 = common serious grammar errors, some loss of meaning, but no loss of overall story. 2/5 = difficult to read, difficulty understanding parts of scenes. 1/5 entire scenes unreadable.]]

Recommendation: 4.5 to 5 stars
A soft minus half star for issues listed above. I am enjoying this series. It feels like a full-fledged novel with it's writing style, narration and dialogue, and step-wise progression. I found the MC's use of his science knowledge very interesting, although some readers may not. It's nice to see an MC work through his challenges with no superpowers. Keep in mind that the majority of the chapters are about nation building. Combat scenes are few in between, but they utilize his innovations and show the difference made by technology. [[5 star means most readers will enjoy, the rest will probably not think it a waste of time. 4 star means majority of readers will enjoy, but the rest will be hit or miss whether they thought it was worth their time. 3 star means hit or miss on whether a reader will enjoy, hit or miss for whether anyone thought was worth their time. 2 star means a niche audience might enjoy, the rest will probably find it not worth the time. 1 star means even the niche audience may not enjoy.]]

Other: Genjitsushugisha no Oukokukaizouki (A Realist's Kingdom Reform Chronicles) Is a similar story, but it feels simpler and doesn't use as much detail with science and engineering. It's also a bit more preachy about politics, and a lot more cheesy. I gave it a slightly lower rating than this series, 4 stars. <<less

Unlike most stories let alone unlike most chinese stories that are worth less then used toilet tissue paper this story is damned glorious. The MC is not some bullsh*t half wit dumber then a ret*rded child who powers through the story with nonsensical idealism/hypocrisy/plotholes while getting r*ped in the bum hole hard with the silver platter of deus ex machina. Characters have character and are consistent in their personalities. A story exists. The world does not break itself for sake of moving the plot forward and stays consistent. The MC... more>> is not some overpowered fcktwat. Everything is plausible and so much more. Writing is not poor either. Quite literally everything MC does is possible and thusly plausible. MC never does anything that is beyond his means to do. If he can't do it he gets someone to do it.

Very extremely rarely am I so hard pressed to not be able to find faults or stuff to call out. This story is worth reading to those who possess any standards or taste for a good story.

EDIT Very few stories can ever get past 500 chapters and still feel like there is room for another 1000. No fluff, terribly asinine digressions or large random info dumps are to be found in RTW. It feels like the author is a good follower of the chekhov's gun principle. <<less

Reviewed after reading c66 of proper translation and c298 of mtl.

If you are looking for a transported-to-another-world novel in which the MC actually make use of his previous life's knowledge instead of got dragged by the new world system and relying on some stuff gained following fortuitous encounter, then this is the one. So far, the MC is actually relatively weak physically and can't fight at all. However, he smartly arranges many development plans, management, and inventions in the new world, also spreading new propaganda for the masses. He shows... more>> that even without brawn, magical immortality, h**ny desires, and overbearing conduct, a Chinese MC can still be very interesting.

The premise is simply unbelievable. We are expected to believe that witches ACTUALLY EXIST yet no-one thinks to use their power? And this:

These gravel section was ash gray, containing plenty of calcium carbonates, can be used as limestone after grinding. With the limestone he had his solution, it would be equal to cement. Yes, this would change the history of mankind, to be able to build with a water hardening material, with raw materials which were easily to obtain, which were simple to prepare, it truly numbered among’s one of... more>> the efficient tools for tilling the fields.

We're supposed to believe that medieval people had no idea that limestone could be used for cement. That's just s*upid and dumb. The historical errors are on par with Elf Tensei, except the premise isn't anywhere near as fun or cool. In Elf Tensei the MC has an array of cool powers he could use in addition to his historical knowledge. Here the MC has no powers at all. It's like a more boring version of Elf Tensei. <<less

  1. Get rid of everything you know about transported to another world.
  2. There no teen tropes this is not a harem story the main character is not a idiot with personality defects or a teenage boy living out his fantasy.
  3. For once we have an actual normal successful individual that uses logic and reason just another regular person with way too much education.
  4. I've seen many comments about the story progression and the way it develops or disliking how the romance saga goes out this is not a harem story this isn't even a Roman story deal with it.
  5. Though the speed of the story in the progress of the main character makes is quite rapid you can suspend your disbelief for a moment considering the fact that he's working with witches and utilizing them to the best of his ability and there's.
  6. This is the story I have been waiting for. What happens when logic reason in magic go up against the prejudice and ignorance of an ill guided Church that abuses all mankind.

Absolutely perfect. I always wondered why in almost every transmigration story, the MC NEVER uses anything he's learned from his old world. In this novel, however, that's what it's all about. I'll admit sometimes I wondered how any human being could possibly remember how to make pretty much everything under the sun, but ignoring that, it was great. Release that witch? More like release that communist lol.

No really. This novel is basically The Communist Manifesto. But with witches. And fantasy. You can see that the imparted value of CCP in the MC that might or might have not been the avatar of the writer. Release that Witch is basically how a story would turn out when an engineering student that aspires to be a member of the party who is also a reddit-tier atheist decided that s/he would want to write a fantasy story.

I have no qualms in... more>> the worldbuilding or in fact the kingdom building itself. No. The writer is certainly a learned individual and if you have a bit of interest in the engineering field you might find the details impressive. But for ordinary people like me, they're sometimes too textbook-ish and jarring. Almost as if that what is written there is an info dump just because it needs to be there (and it really happens quite often). There's also this constant virtue signalling about how great atheism is but to each their own, I don't really mind but as a religious man myself it gets tiresome after the nth time.

Romance is fine. Shame that the author might've been introduced too much witches, considering that most witches are set to be attracted to the MC. Hundreds of chapters in and I must say the character development of most of the witches that's not the main girls are going to be doomed.

Oh, and by the way did I mention that the MC is an atheist? <<less

No matter what anyone will say, this is the best kingdom building novel that I have currently read. I've come to like this novel and get hook on because of its somewhat realistic turn of events and the incorporation of modern stuff like guns etc. To a world of monster and magic is quite good, no it was quite fantastically excellent. The only down side of this novel is that it is pay per page and so many chapters stretched out to many arcs and many uninteresting things but I... more>> will still faithfully rate this 5 stars. Because I expect chinese novels to have thousands of chapters. For now the translation isn't gonna be catching up with at least the speed of the raw releases. That is my only complain. If they manage to shorten the raw and translated gap into 400 chapters then I will gladly donate to support the TL team. But it will be difficult because the translators are changing. If you look at it at a different angle. This novel can be used as a propaganda for anti church, atheism. If most of people doesn't know, china has no religion and most chinese people are atheist. So it can be looked at that. But intelligent people will only just shrug it off and go on with their lives whether they have religion or not. I am officially going to drop this novel because it is going in a very boring direction. I drop it at 1036 chapter. The relationship of characters are haywire and don't even mention the potential love interest. Remember, it has harem tag and I don't gripe about harems as long as the story doesn't get affected to it but when the author dedicated consecutive chapters just to portray his relationship to opposite genders disgust and abhor is what I felt when reading. MC can be both indecisive and decisive, bold and timid, smart and s*upid. He is a walking contradiction when it comes to dealing with relationship of opposite gender whether it is friendship or love interest, both are crappy. At early chapters it is okay but when I read at the 1000th chapter it becomes ridiculous. I will not be surprise if the author started to force characters in the story to be coupled with one another with bad chemistry and reasons. I will still rate this 5 star because it is the best kingdom building in this site. But the rest are all up to you to decide if you want to read this novel.

P.S. I don't know why the author had a hard boner on steam punk technology. The MC could literally and realistically skip technology development when he got to the dream world. The MC's brain goes on and off just like the mostly other novels. Sevens is much more competent thant RtW still rating it 5 though. <<less

Release That Witch is an excellent world building fantasy series that combines the charm of modern technology in a medieval setting with a cast of excellently written characters.

One of the best part of this series is how much work the author puts into miscellaneous side characters. Often times in most other webnovels I have read, the focus is 95%+ on the MC+ maybe a handful of compatriots and the other 5% are on some side characters that the MC happens to come across and then quickly forgotten as the story... more>> progresses. RTW is not like most other webnovels in that Er Mu takes time to write a chapter here and there to show side character growth and progression while always adding something to the overall plot. All of the side characters feel like actual people with their own lives rather than some accessory to the MC's story. Some of my favorite chapters are those told from the point of view of these side characters rather than the MC. <<less

Spoiler

The way that witches and people think about MC: In the early stage of the story this didn
t bother me but now the glorifying (glorifying is the words that Ill use here, non-native btw) of Roland leaves me a bit tired. The fact that we have different POV and in almost all of them the characters are like, Roland is a genius, your highness is so good, this and that, pisses me off. Its not like those POVs are only this, some POVs give more color to the story and make the reading more enjoyable, but man, why is it that everytime someone is putting him on a pedestal.

Romance. Im somewhat a h**ny guy, I guess. I actually think that is normal for MCs to have several serious relationships with women. The MC does have, more than one, but the way that is made pisses me off. Why? Because for me is f*cking ridiculous how this guy leaves Nightingale up to dry. Anna has a normal relationship with him, they even had s*x, but Nightingale? No. Nothing. She kissed him, yeah, but you can see that is enough. She knows that he has s*x with Anna and shes frustrated with that, and the MC just ignores that shit. Hes ignoring that sh*t for so long that I kinda resent him, I guess. F*ck, in all the other ways the MC adapted to the world but only in this way he didnt. And oh, these are the only open romantic interests for the MC. There are other witches that you could think that love him, by the way they think of him, but we dont see them trying anything so nothing happens.

Kingdom, I guess. The kingdom has centralized power and the MC has the all the power on his hands (ps, since I read the centralized part I remembered about China). My problem with that is that the future of this kingdom will become shit. The only things that keep this kingdom as good as it is now are the witches and the fact that this king is somewhat good. But what about the future. Can a centralized power survive when the next king goes on a power trip? When the people dont know how to deal with witches? If you leave the power to only some people, how can the people respond when the king does something bad?

P.S: Do not be fooled by people that say that this isnt like the other cultivation stories in terms of power trip. While there arent young master everywhere, there still are crowds that scream his name everytime he does something that looks great for them, people constantly adore him, he constantly rekts people in the beginning of the story with "OP" stuff (op in this world of course). Its the same thing but with other colors.

I could talk more about how there isnt a deep relationship between him and the other witches (not a big problem for me), how the chapters are full of technical stuff that I at points just skim over, but I cant write those thoughts well.

I feel sad, sad because while there are cool things about the story negative stuff just push that to the ground.

I still think that everyone in this community should read it. Maybe I

ll edit this in the future. <<less

If you love kingdom building with technological, curb stomp battles then this novel is for you. Honestly his novel is pretty well written and I do enjoy the old tech vs modern tech battles in this story.

There are few stories in which I have read that include this similar setting with guns with this many chapters. It's very satisfying seeing the MC rise from the ashes of his former self and conquering his kingdom with his arsenal of guns!

A western-style engineer-skeptic reincarnation fantasy that is bogged down by dragging chapters, terrible exposition and cartoon villains in a story without enough happening

This is a Chinese reincarnation novel almost indistinguishable in flavour from something that might have been published in the west. An engineering fantasy, with a lot of atheism and a Final Fantasy-levels corrupt evil Church, the story is about a Chinese engineer reincarnated as the good-for-nothing 4th prince of a western style kingdom who ends up saving a witch. Naturally, witches turn out to be perfectly ok, and... more>> really handy.

The prose is readable, the translation flows ok, and the style of the story and my mental images are un-anime enough that it took me a while to realise it might be a harem story...

However, as the story progresses it starts to *drag*. Our MC, besides building and building and building on his power-base in Bumduck, Kingdom of Graycastle, is mostly reactionary and stationary. Characters slowly atrophy to background machinery (most clearly with our main romantic interest, Anna, who becomes a glorified welding machine, but even the MC becomes just an idea dispenser), with some rare character moments sprinkled here and there.

So much that is written down could be easily done with a hundred times less text. The MC commissions a primitive and boring pontoon bridge, for example, which is then lovingly described for many,

many,

*many* paragraphs.

There are many side-chapters (or multipart sidechapters) from antagonistic characters, including ones where they reveal all their evil plans to the reader like a very verbose and clear-spoken council of ominous monoliths. Worst of all, all of these side-chapters are so full of aggravating filler and repetition; I don't want to know every single detail of how this or that irrelevant Duke ends up walking into an obvious death-trap of no importance to the story on the other side of the country in a war our MC isn't even really participating in..! And then, at the end of the chapter I learn it's another effing two-parter, with more of the same.

The story is slow-moving to its detriment, padded out in order to give room to a cookie-cutter industrialization fantasy. This can work in smaller doses and with more *stuff* happening (that the MC actually is PART of), but not if you just tease events for a hundred chapters and then deliver a damp squid. <<less
