A bookworm who had finally found a job as a librarian at a university was sadly killed shortly after graduating from college.

She was reborn as Myne, the daughter of a soldier in a world where the literacy rate is low and books were scarce. No matter how much she wanted to read, there were no books around. What is a bookworm to do without any books? Make them, of course.

Her goal is to become a librarian! So that she may once again live surrounded by books, she must start by making them herself.

This is a more realistic take than most reincarnation novels. The MC reincarnates after dieing suddenly, into a very weak sickly body, a poor family living in a dirty commoner neighborhood. It takes a while for the MC to accept her situation and start warming up to the people around her.

The first 2 arcs are mostly related to the character getting used to her new environment and learning. The rest are more focused around political intrigue.

Overall it's a great story, the MC is adorable and there's plenty of great side... more>> characters. The world building is done well, given bits by bits, and the magic system is interesting and consistent.

I have great hopes for the anime, hope it introduces more people to this great series. <<less

written by a true savant of world building and character writing.

The world building in this series is on a godly level, far beyond any other series I have read before, and done in a very non expository manner. Well integrated into the plot.

The characters in them are very realistic and believable. Charactee development and writing is just... top tier.

... more>> It is slice of life, but at its purest form. There is no romance, no harems, no fighting, just pure slice of life.

Words can't express how high the level of character development and world building in this series is, to the point it has become the basis for which I compare every other series on novel updates.

If you desire generic characters in a generic world with a generic plot device of im gonna be the best, then you should avoid this.

If you want a fully developed world with evolving characters spread slowly via slice of life, where it feels like some took time and effort into developing the world, then you should give this a go.

It is that good, and a very underrated series here on novel updates. <<less

I started reading this after seeing the anime and I am quite saddened that there were plenty of folks who rated Ascendance of a Bookworm pretty low but I feel it is all up to perspective. Myne's whimsical actions aren't meant to showcase her as "the best unshakable protagonist ever." I feel Myne, unlike most story protagonist, and her actions, although sometimes selfish, are meant to showcase the solid world building Ascendance of a Bookworm has. Her randomness is meant to show us glimpses of how the other world works,... more>> its beauty and its dangers. Her lack of knowledge is meant to give us an idea what is expected of people of that time. Her subsequent learning to make up for it would then add to us understanding how these things expected of her affect this world's societal structure. Myne, for all her shortcomings, is actually a perfect character to draw out the potential of world-building. Hence why, she might not be the "best character ever" but for a story like Ascendance of a Bookworm with a solid fantasy world, Myne would be the perfect fit to paint us a picture of how things are there. <<less

Really quite a pleasant reading if you ask me.

To those complaining about Maine in the earlier chapter.
Spoiler

I'm not sure but I can pretty guess in her previous life despite being 22 years old and having questionable academic backgrounds, I guess she's from a pretty well off family. I think she focused more on those books that explain the manual behind the invention from various culture but didn't focus much on the actual social situations in particular the dark side of society. Thus her transparent inability to read between the lines.

Not gonna lie but it's clear she lived in a comfortable and protected family before she reincarnate. From the books she mentioned it sounds she read mostly inventions and fantasy light novel... she would have some common sense if she actually read classic literature (especially once from English literature that condemn those child labors, like Oliver twist, Rosso malpelo,...) which I think she didn't.

[collapse]
Her childishness must have come from the lack of actual experience and interaction in her previous life. She might have read many books but, personal experience, suffering, joy and exposure to the outside world are what make a person truly grow and be self aware..

And its also what make her reaction in that young body appropriate since she's still learning from people by interacting with them and starting from the very bottom.

For once they show: even with advance knowledge you are still limited and you have to earn what you need with your own hands without help of your backgrounds and set your eyes towards what's beyond the boundary of what you can grab.

Spoiler

Plus from her description she sounded like she's someone who closed herself behind books completely distancing herself from interactions with other people. A shut-in. In a way, it almost cause her lack awareness towards others since from the start we can clearly see how her brain almost focused on archiving self worth while not paying much attention at her current status and her family difficulties.

She is incredibly annoying to read bc of her scandalous reactions but I think it's justified.

At the same time, it was equally questionable some of her acclaimed knowledge. Which I think is almost all over the place. I really wonder what in the world is her major. It's true some courses explained those methodical improvements and has linked course from other branch such as psychology but usually they always keep the arguments focused on its links with your main major. So yeah I was really skeptical when she blurted out she has a vast knowledge of psychology which is a pretty grand discipline (Geez, I studied it for 5 years and it wasn't even that detailed like in college but only a preparation for college).

[collapse]

Anyway, she starts as this "complaining spoiled brat" stereotype that would make future readers deem her horrible but I really do still advice reading the serie and don't judge the character just after some first chapters in the prologue.

she has been annoying and insensitive but her parents and friends did good job knocking some sense in that brain of hers that she is not in some comfortable and well off context both family-wise and social cultural and economical stand points. Which I think she later slowly adapt and care for her fam.

But, yeah I think she really want more than her current state which despite it looks arrogant it's a good example for the people around her to go out from their shells and comfortable yet poor status quo and aim for higher job/dream. I think her friend Lutz and his family was a good example of this.
Spoiler

Is it a good novel with humble and saint like protagonist? No. It's a novel featuring a girl with equally normal human traits:

- greed to make the place around her a better place ;

- selfishness let's get serious all her actions are almost all done to benefit her personal needs. Yet along the way she helped others.

- ambition.

[collapse]
Rather than a novel telling about this isekai girl bettering the country she is in, the story is more about working hard to accomplish her dream.

I still recommend. I like this new type of isekai in a poor family household but just like many others initially Maine is borderline selfish and self-centered. But I still advise it since some events and facts in the novel really make the reader self aware of how fortunate we are. AND SHE GETS MORE MATURE and CARING IN LATER CHAPS.

So far this is one of the few isekai novel I read that has complex and well done world concept. <<less

I found the story as alright, not particularly great but not overly bad, however there are several key reasons why I chose to stop reading it (none of the reasons listed below really contributed to the rating they're just why I didn't want to read more) :

1: I don't like the main character. I may be slightly prejudiced because I tend to dislike female protagonists in general, but I found the main character's behavior kind of unpleasant.

Her initial reaction to being reincarnated, specifically her somewhat spoiled/entitled behavior after having her... more>> modern conveniences taken away (such as having her sister fetch water for her to take a bath regularly), is admittedly more realistic and reasonable than other isekai stories and likely closer to how I myself may react if I was thrust into the same situation. BUT just because I may find it somewhat reasonable does not make me like her character.

2: My biggest beef happened later in the story:
Spoiler

I personally do not usually mind how religion is portrayed in fiction, no matter how bad it is, because after all it is fiction and religion did do some bad things in history. BUT what I dislike most about the main character is how the she behaved in regards to the religion that we are introduced to in the story.

During one of scenes the main character visits the temple/church thing (I don't really remember what they called it) and she ends of laughing at their religious pose (or whatever you would called) and laughs to the point that she, if I recall correctly, has to leave the room; at some point after this she ends up discovering that the church/temple thing has books/a library and she joins the clergy in order to gain access to the books.

I don't have issue with how she makes fun of the religious pose thing, because it does look pretty funny. What bothered me is how she joins the clergy/church not out of religious conviction, but to read books. I understand that her character is centered around her obsession with books, but I found it somewhat insulting/disrespectful towards those who are religious as she enters into the clergy of a religion she doesn't believe in whatsoever, as far as I can tell, and has previously laughed at/made fun of and her only reasoning is to read their religious scripture because they happen to be in the form of a book. The majority of clergymen, both in the book and in history (though not so much today), were either orphans with no parents to rely on or nobility who aren't set to inherit anything, and her sole reasoning to more or less cast away her family/ friends is to read the religious books of a religion she doesn't believe in.

I personally feel that this attitude toward religion is very disrespectful, I'm not asking anyone to agree with any of my religious convictions but I at least want some respect. I think I wouldn't have minded it as much if it was something more like "disguising yourself as a priest to read them", or "stealing the books from the weird temple thingy, " or even "let's just burn the whole goddam temple down." Actually joining the clergy/church (whatever it is called) for such a petty/materialistic (I don't really care how much she loves books, I still think it is kind of petty) reason when she already has a loving family and many friends is kind of insulting (for both the family that is put after books and the orphans she'll be joining who don't have any other option).

I really prefer how Saihate no Paladin (MC is a priest/paladin or how Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou (Main Antagonist (?) is the church (if I remember that correctly)) handled religion a lot more.

While, if it is not already glaringly obvious, I disliked this part of the story, but I still read a little more.

[collapse]

3: This reason, despite the one above, is probably the real reason why I stopped reading. It's because of what I gleaned through the spoiler forums. I regularly read spoilers and then read the story itself, so the issue wasn't that the story was spoiled, but rather the contents of those spoilers.
Spoiler

She doesn't end up with Lutz. While it is realistic, as the majority of people don't end up with their childhood friends, it is still somewhat disappointing and from some of the other reviews here people seem to agree with me. Also the character she ends up with was someone who my initial mental of was an old man (likely not the author or translator's fault and just my mind automatically associating gray/silver hair with the elderly).

[collapse]
It's hard to motivate yourself to read a long story with an end result that you don't really like.

I didn't think that the story was badly written; I just didn't really like it. Most of the people reading this review probably won't have any of the same issues with the story and I read it several months ago now so some of the details may have been exaggerated by my mind. I personally wouldn't recommend it, but if you think the synopsis sounds cool and you have nothing else to read go ahead and read it. <<less

MY ADVISE: IF YOU HAVING SYNDROME =>" PICKY ABOUT HOW A PROTAGONIST OR MC SHOULD BE", DON'T BOTHER TO READ. TRY TO READ "TILLEA's WORRY" to cure that illness.

I just read the RAW till the last chapter extra side stories. I would say that it really fit the genre and you will only realize why the title have "Ascendance " on if you read it all, then it all make sense. I would say I enjoy it a lot since it was a genre that I like and I found... more>> MC also very likeable despite being so 'imbalance' and 'flaw' in her way of thought. Family and friends is above all then books after. Everything else beside that are lower priority. The gap between the personality of MC and how her surrounding interact to is the main selling of the plot. Slowly, she rise with baby step yet seems godly giant to reality and common senses of the surrounding. Romance is not the main genre but there are some characters relationship that I can't help but to root for while reading.

The MC alone won't be the selling point for the read of this novel but on how the author are so good putting the development of its characters, plots and story. Seeing the story in different view made me intrigued by the characters reactions, thought and personality. The technology gap is really on point and it wasn't overused because it was really is BIG deal for the story. I like how author write every point how it affect many aspect.

PS: All of the negative reviews are always blabbering on how they hate MC specs which doesn't fit their ideal MC. These people will always say subjective opinion and think it's bad when actually other ppl might see it as gem. When they talk about how MC this s*upid bla bla bla then I'll know they are worshiper of "godly perfect-like MC". Any other MC will be roasted by them.

The gap age between

Spoiler

Meyn and Ferdinand was about 12 yo. I only remember when Mayne was 8, Ferdinand was 20. Also, don't bring our common sense value about marriage age gap to the story of fantasy world settings. Sad SJW ppl won't be able to enjoy good gems

Well planed and well written. The story you can submerge into. Not per say a typical Isekai story, but do not stray to far from it. The only problem is, to this point, a lack of wider explanation of magic. It is treated like an adopted unwanted child here, left on the sidelines.

Spoiler

For example: Why do Paru trees show up only in winter, and they are gone thru other seasons? (Yes, we all know they are magic... by it insufficient) And why Tronbay seed suddenly exploded and grow out rapidly when Main picked it up? (yes, it is another magical plant... but again it was practically left untouched!!! This has so much potential to be useful, especially when Main will learn how to use /release her magic outside her body. I hope author will not blow it u and squander the opportunity

This is great! With the cover, you will probably think that is just a simple shoujo story but it is definitely not.

Maine, the female protagonist, is not OP. She is a bit immature which will annoy you but her thinking and passion is not to be belittled. She is surely not perfect but that makes her more realistic in my opinion but it really pissed me off that in she loves books too much that she doesn't care about others (in her previous life). But she is changing, she is... more>> growing into a better and wiser person. The story is too slow-paced but it is tolerable since it is really good. <<less

I LOVE THIS!

Here guys the ones who rated this only one star:

1. Yes, this is slow paced, because this is a slice of life type of story. No action. Well I read this so far up to chapter 65 and there's no action by far. So warning for you, this is something you need to be patience and keep reading.

... more>> 2. You will get a bit thrilled when you reach chapter 25. That's the point when someone or two acknowledge Maine's abilities and smartness.

3. You will face Maine's road to be inventor (rinsham, paper, hairpin, purse, etc) somewhere around thirtiesh chapter. Also she and Lutz getting richer bit by bit saving her money.

4. She started to embrace her current family as her own around chapter 40ish something. This for you who judged her as s*upid and not adapting well. Especially her feelings toward Tury and Dad around ch 60ish where she has to reveal her sickness to her family.

I mean, for you who likes Isekai stories and want to see MC applies their previous knowledge to the parralel world so amazingly, just keep reading and you will see there is no Isekai web/light novel like this! <<less

As others have said, it starts out kind of meh.. but keep reading. It'll slowly got better. MC in the beginning seemed selfish and spoiled, only caring about books, but I guess kind of realistic considering her environment with lack of anything. She's at least applying her knowledge to practical uses. She's growing up and getting along fine, a good girl. For the most part, the characters are likable and makes it almost seem like a relaxing isekai coming of age growing up kind of story, if not for the...

I thought the story was interesting at first. I read until chapter 26, and now the mc's personality is getting on my nerve. For someone who was once an adult, I don't understand how they can be so obnoxious and naive about life. I swear, for all of those books that she supposedly read, the knowledge imparted from it must have went in one ear and out the other. IN ANSWER TO ALL ONE STAR REVIEWS

Just read a bit more please, okay? And all your complaints will be gone—

Because, yes, our MC is originally pretty much a spoiled brat, and she's meant to be, because immense character development is on it's way! In our world she had no need to change or learn or fight to get something. She lived for her special interest, books, and that alone. In this one she is a small impoverished child, surrounded by illiterates, and with absolutely zero chance of getting books.... more>> She struggles desperately. Fails. Encounter culture shock. Overcomes her illness. And ultimately learns so much. The "ascendance" part of the title is there for a reason you know, as she ascends both emotionally and in the real world. At one point our MC herself even thinks back at who she once was with shame.

Second, it isn't supposed to be historically correct, as, if you read further, you will realize she is in a completely different world that works on different principles. Though the rainbow hair should have clued you in on it.

Third, there is no love interest yet, don't just assume Lutz is, they are little kids. Also, in what way is he treated as a s*ave? If you continue reading you will find out that she helps him just as much as he helps her. She literally changes his life. Light spoiler:

Spoiler

Not only does she help him get a job he otherwise had no chance of getting, and subsequently help him achieve his dream, she also tutors him when he can't afford a teacher like the other apprentices, and shares profits generously. She even helps him resolve his family issues and just genuinely cares about him.

[collapse]

Forth, and most importantly, her love for books isn't unreal. It's her special interest. I myself am autistic, and one's special interest is pretty much one's purpose in life. Our main source of energy and joy. For her to lose it, especially with the way she surrounded herself with it previously, it's devastating. You can literally lose your will to live just like Myne did. I don't think her selfish for wanting to find that anchor in a new, cold, dirty, strange world. Everything she knew is gone, can you blame her for wanting to find that comfort? That of which has always been her driving point in life? Also, to call it a fetish just because she enjoys the scent of paper and ink is so mean. You sniff fresh cookies out of the oven because you enjoy the scent, does that suddenly make you a cookie fetishist?

Lastly, though my special interest isn't books themselves, it is stories. So, as someone who spends all their free time reading, and subsequently has read tens of thousands of books, if not more, let me just say this-

Ascendance of a Bookworm is my favorite.

Yeah, that's right. Out of all of them. The world building, the characters development (of all characters). I consider it a masterpiece. My favorite tv series is Avatar the Last Airbender and my favorite book series Ascendance of a Bookworm. I admire them both for the same reasons, and though it's a bit unfair as one is a book and one a tv series, Ascendance of a Bookworm may be even better. So don't just go leaving one star reviews without even reading it, that would be like watching two episodes of Avatar only to say it's crap as Sokka is a sexist pig, Aang an irresponsible brat, and Katara's just a generic love interest. And then, just to top it off, claim it isn't historical accurate... You see what I mean?

To be fair, Ascendance of a bookworm is quite cozy slow paced in the beginning. So if you don't want to read it due to that, I completely understand. That said, because it's so slow paced however, you can't just condemn it after a few chapters because you assume it's going in a certain direction, without even continuing on to see if it truly will.

Therefore, if you aren't bothered by the slow pace, please give it a chance. It truly is amazing. And I promise you, she is continuously learning and the world is slowly expanding for both her and us. There is more than just the beginning. <<less

I have read the entire series. (I used the MTL of the Webnovel to read the rest of the series.)

Top 5 of my favorite books/series.

Worldbuilding - Amazing and fantastic

Characters - Complex, character growth in even minor characters, and have real depth (backgrounds for everyone and show a range of emotions and mindsets)

Dialogue - Great (I am not quite sure about the end of the series dialogue because it was MTL but... it is what it is)

This is from someone who read lightnovel from jnovelclub, this novel is really good, don’t listen to those who make bad review while reading only few chapters, they expect myne (our protagonist) to become someone who are selflessness, good natured, smart, kind and caring from the very start, just imagine yourselves die and suddenly becomes someone else child in the rural era where there is no phone no comfort not even bath, are you going to celebrate and adapt your life right away? Of course not, you are not going... more>> to be theirs child right away, that just plain s*upid if you expect her to do that (and this is the main reason why people dislike this novel, Omg!), she need time to adapt and adjust her life to her surroundings, she will keep better and better just like “normal people do” so keep readings, it’s worth it, you will know that this novel world building is so good and detailed and you are going to love it if you pull it through. <<less

Sorry for any mistake, English is not my first language. This is the Isekai novel that has the biggest and best world-building I've ever seen. Usually the worlds that MCs are sent to are either a reflection of our world (either in the current world or in a medieval era) or are primitive worlds, and that does not happen in this novel. The author put a lot of effort into making a unique world with its own characteristics and culture. MC is also unique, she is not overly op, she... more>> has very unique ideas from the earth, but she has several problems in making them a reality.

One of the greatest examples of this is when she tries to make paper, it is something that we generally know how it is done, but we do not know all the steps and we would probably fail sometimes to arrive at a usable final product.

I think it is important to indicate that this is a very long novel and has been following Myne's life for approximately 10 years, the novel itself is divided into 5 parts and currently the translating scam is in the middle of part two. This means that there is still a lot to happen in the story.

Most of the story is about how the protagonist creates books and spreads them around this world where books and literacy are rich and noble things, the struggling parts are in parts 4 and 5, so the novel is quite still, if you are looking for a world with more action this novel is not for you.

Without saying any spoilers, don't create any expectations about the protagonist's romance or romantic couple. She doesn't care about romance and culturally in this world it is the parents who choose the spouse. <<less

To preface this review, I want to say that I really really wanted to like this novel. But there was no getting around the creeping sense of boredom that came with each new chapter.

First, as many have already mentioned, the plot moves at glacier speeds. Which isn't typically a problem (there's nothing wrong with slow series) but it is when very little of actual interest happens (and I don't mean action, you don't need tons of violence to have an interesting series). The first couple of chapters are incredibly repetitive... more>> and thanks to Maine/Myne's handicap there's not much she can actually do other than espouse her lust for books. And it is really rather a lust rather than a love for books that drive her, which starts to get really old real fast.

Second, her personality is two dimensional at best. She loves books and not much else. Her knowledge on subjects she has claimed to read all about is lackluster, and the worst of it is how she treats those around her. I get not warming up immediately to a strange "new" (in her eyes) family and friends, but she barely treats them as people. If they weren't handy in terms of moving her from place to place (because of her weak body) I doubt she would give them the time of day.

I can't really say much else about it (especially not on anything that happens later on) but I can't in good faith recommend a series that takes 30+ chapters to get good (and that might be stretching it). Its like telling someone to watch an anime series with over 200 episodes and saying episode 80 is when it starts to get good.

TLDR; It has a glacier plot with little of interest happening, the writing can be rather dry in some places, and the MC is very bare bones. If you want a female oriented isekai/reincarnation story there are quite a few out there that are much more palatable. <<less

I really want to cursed but choose not and just want to stop reading at Chapter 67. Before leaving my I review I read others review and spoilers

At CH. 2 I really wish I should have stop their when I get insulted when the MC says that how can a family let a child do manual Labor in which was only helping in the kitchen? Is that really hard even for a modern person perspective?

Maine character really pisses me off but holds on just because I wish Lutz can have his efforts turn to love on the end and here I was reading someone's Spoiler that the B**** got herseld an old man

Ohh I can't help curse out their by the way... Sorry

The very big disappointment is here at CH 67. When she already have to face the books she is searching for. Maybe she is to obsessed by books but that very obsession Disappointed me. Not only she was disrespectful to Religion she showed how s*upid she was showing all her cards only to enter that library.

From the way they portray a 22 year old woman claiming to be adult to act spoiled, clueless and very very vey from earth to the universe s*upid make me want to go their and kick her myself or rather be an antogonist and let this novel become YAOI and become Lutz partner wahahaha...

Simply the Bookworm they portrayed here feels like not a bookworm at all.

I believe bookworms are people that should not only love books but also actually read books and should been knowledgeable and full of wisdom. Someone even a merchant can't just easily beat when in terms of psychology and accounts. Not like "the bookworm that ascends' that feels like the only things she read only are novels and fairy tails.

And they even made a Anime. I wish atleast in the anime make it so Lutz have his Happy Ending, the very reason I stick to this slow pace novel.

Impressive, this novel made me dislike the MC in six chapters. The actual idea of the story is quite interesting, a book lover being reincarnated into a world with no easy access to books and the author also describes living in poverty pretty well. But the MC... There are so many things wrong with her. She claims to love reading, and "Absorbing the vast knowledge contained within just a single volume", but she acts utterly s*upid and ignorant in every imaginable way. Also, she is extremely selfish and spoiled, going... more>> around how unclean everyone and everything is (Random trivia, people in medieval times regularly bathed, but later on they came to weird conclusion: https://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Bathing#Medieval_and_early-modern_Europe).

I dont think ive ever encountered a more rotten and unlikable personality from a MC. It just leaves a bad taste, especially as the MC is probably intended to be "cute". 1* <<less

I slogged through 500 chapters of google translation to finish this one. It's that good. To make it short, this isn't really an Isekai but more of an Harry Potter where the intrigue is more political and human than magical. It's unique and a great read despite my experience being trying to mentally auto-complete the word salad that the auto-translator spew out. The first two parts of the story (200+ chapters) is the unique isekaish part. The latter three parts (300-400 chapters) is the Harry Potter parts.

The main criticism is... more>> that the MC is childish. That's a fair point and she's quite frustrating at times but she improves and grows over the story. Because the story has failure and consequences to choices and actions which are incentives to growth that are too often ignored in other amateur works.

And to be honest, there are really, really good reasons for Maine to just blow over and curse the world, but she doesn't, which is quite mature and determined. Her life is hard and she's chronically sick. I've made a list of chronological spoilers if you wanna check them over.

  • Spoiler

The MC gets transported from modern life into a piss poor medieval family. Her unique cheat? None, bar a serious frail body that can't do physical chores without having bouts of debilitating fever.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

The Fever is actually the syndrome of a deadly disease that will kill her. She has a couple of very close-calls. But toward the end of the first part, she's pretty much at the terminal stage with months to live. (Think terminal cancer kinda of situation where you start saying goodbye to your loved ones.)

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

She finds a way to overcome the deadly condition through a hard choice. That said, she's not completely cured. She's still frail and has bouts of debilitating fever.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

She gets critically wounded at some point and has to pay a heavy price for it.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

She'll keep having to deal with the consequences of not only her actions but also the results of higher machinations to deal with. She'll be repeatedly forced in unfavorable situations she must accept

    [collapse]
Overall it's a coherent and imaginative story that's head and shoulders above the plethora of bland reincarnation stories out there. <<less

Good points:

  • MC power can be her weakness
  • I can relate to her going without food to read books
  • The side characters are much more entertaining but is short lived
  • Some areas are fleshed out well
Bad Points:

  • Inconsistencies.
  • Duplicated MC character traits
  • Same tragedy
  • The MC is s*upid and careless
