Shepherding Humanity

During the ancient tribal era, the world was vast and inscrutable.

Through constant exploration, the ancients were horrified to discover that God walked the land. The Wise Beast stood ten-thousand-feet tall, trampling mountains and shattering the earth.

Hundreds of years later, in that dangerous environment, mankind triumphed against the giant beasts and finally built the glorious Sumerian civilization.

On that day, the Wise Beast suddenly descended, trampling over mountains and rivers and destroying the entire nation. The land and the sky crumbled. Cities collapsed.

Has God descended to punish men for their sins?

“I’m sorry, but you’re just ants living in my yard. You’re all over the place, and I accidentally stepped on you while passing by. That’s all there is to it.”

This is the story of a slightly disappointing Creator and his hyper-competent creations.

"It's a unique feeling when reading a similar world-building theme but developed in a non-common direction. When I started reading this, I deduced some plot points that might happen (like an arrogant young master, suppression of the country towards the MC, uncontrollable harem, MC getting caught imitating as the god of creation, etc.), but none of this happened.

The story started with a guy in his middle stage of cancer. Despite having treatment to cure the cancer and using up all his money, he gives up and returns to his hometown... more>> to take care of his deceased parent's orchard. He is supposed to live out his final days there, but his life changes when he accidentally finds a broodmother/nest of the Zerg race. The story then unfolds from there.

All the plots are unique (although somewhat repetitive, they develop slightly differently than expected). My reading experience is quite peaceful without having a "WTF" moment where a brainless young master barges in and messes up with the MC just to end up with his ass whooped.

Spoiler

As usual, there are a few plot holes/unsolved mysteries.

Although I understand it's hard to keep up with the background of all introduced characters, there are a few characters introduced nicely but later forgotten, like his girlfriend (childhood friend) who takes care of the MC during her study holiday. There are also genius players who are less mentioned near the middle-end of the story, like Alchemy Emperor, etc., just to have them say a few lines to ensure the reader that they're still around but not seen.
The things about Zerg bloodlines. In the last arc of the final battle, the queens somehow get a power boost and magically can use their bloodline to trace the nest, although they're a few generations before. BUT YEAH, just accept the story.

More about the final arc, somehow Diqi (we know that he's a master at copying talent) is irrelevant and can't join the final battle, while magically the resurrected ancient heroes from the Longevity Palace get a big boost and hundreds become more powerful and can barely defeat the MC. It's like forcefully adding plot armor. The leader of the new race is powerful, hundreds of light-years in size, has unimaginable computing brain power but is overwhelmed by the queen Zerg?? Even the Longevity Palace master Shi Zhi (survivor of the dimension race) is weaker than the queen Zerg, although he's the one who defeated all the resurrected ancient heroes??"

[collapse]

Overall, it's a good read. There are some bad (boring/repetitive) and good arcs. The bad ones I usually sped through. One thing I think it needed was a little more controllable harem. <<less

Translator here. Leaving this review since the official summary is a little vague on details.

This is a novel with a focus on world building along the lines of "Low Dimensional Game". The main protagonist acquires the basic building blocks of life and what amounts to a hyperbolic time chamber, and uses them to create new life and build entire civilizations from scratch.

What I like about this novel is how the main protagonist creates all these interesting worlds with different methods of cultivation that are populated by epic, larger-than-life characters. Each... more>> "world" serves as a semi-independent arc and has it own main hero driving events, while the main protagonist functions as a sort of Dungeon Master / Guiding Deity.

If regular cultivation novels could be likened to an MMORPG where you move from map to map while level grinding, then this novel would be the "Civilization" series of games centered on building a civilization on a macro-scale from prehistory up to the near future. It's at times funny, at times epic, and the side protagonists remain relevant far into the future.

Try it if you're looking for something slightly different from the usual fare. <<less

basically this novel is better & superior version of Low Dimensional Game, MC Xu Zhi who have a middle Stage Cancer decide to quit Chemotherapy because its useless & waste his money, living without any relative &losing will to live he decide to resign from working at foreign company & decide to return to his Village to spend the rest of his life that's what suppose to happen but his fate began to change after meeting with a Black Beetle which is the Queen of Tyranisia Civilization who on the... more>> verge of death due to failing on her invasion against the Supernatural the Land of Eternia, thus she decide to give the hive mind of Tyranisia to our glorious MC Xu Zhi & embark upon creating a mini world with Ant Size Sentient Being behind his backyard while opening the Virtual Reality Game of Spora Evolution in order to figure out better Optimized Species via beta tester.

No Nationalism, No Racism, No Arrogant Young Master, No Harem, albeit there's some romance with CHen Xi that's not the main focus & Xu ZHi isn't the type who act using his d*ck which is a good thing.

the only complain here is the translation chapter is too few thus I have to read MTL because this story is so awesome with MC act as God of these ant Size Civilization while at the same time he's the Game Master of the Virtual Reality Game of Spora Evolution.

Very good start, payoff for world building is great for the first few arcs, but as I continue reading, it gets more tedious and boring to read, especially when it starts to focus less on the protagonist.

Spoiler

It starts to focus more on the individual players and how they interact with the world. I care about the protagonist's interaction with the world he made, as well as the world's own development and its reaction to the protagonist who is their God.

However, when the players start interacting with the world more, it gets harder to find enjoyment to read, especially when they themselves are not suitable to be protagonists. It sets them up to have a great impact on the worlds they come into and make them seem extraordinary, but in reality, (and this is an annoying trend that whenever these players run into trouble, be it the threat of a virtual death, which wouldn't actually kill them IRL, to just being in trouble) they cry and complain and bit*h for help online for the rest of the world to help them, which it does. There is no player who has a stroke of genius or has the strength to surpass these obstacles in their paths. There is not a single compelling player I enjoyed so far once it started to move away from them just developing Spore monsters, because the players are shitty protagonists for their stories. The only time they were enjoyable to read about was when they were just developing species, because it actually felt like they were intellectual while being the comedic breather for the world's development.

In the end, the world the protagonist creates and the beings in those worlds are far more compelling to read about, such as Gilgamesh or Medusa. They have actual stakes to their challenges and adversities, ones I hope they surpass, but I cannot say the same about the players and their misadventures.

[collapse]

The beginning is very strong, but it gets weaker and weaker unfortunately. I give it a 3.5 <<less

The story is great if you like an god protagonist/ kingdom building protagonist. Each arc is interconnected with each other and major characters in each arc are remembered throughout the story. Take with a grain of salt from a bias view on what's bad.
Spoiler

1. It suffer harem like story where most side characters are introduced as girls, at current chapter I'd say there's 3 guy characters.
2. Spore system has too little insight on what's going on with other countries only showing Chinese perspectives with no other religion or mythology from earth being reflected in the 'game'
3. Again little depth of presenting the daily life or technology of the different worlds

Readed the raw

This one has extreme nationalism to it.
It might repulse you.
Too bad, I really like the story.

I don't mean the kind in like those other story that is openly saying that china is the best, but boy was it moving towards it lol.

You can clearly see that the author is an avid fan of china.

It's full of china and chinese. It's as if chinese culture and chinese myth is the only thing he know. Of course there are others, but they are so negligible there might as well as none.

I can understand it at first because he's still weak, but as the story goes it becomes extreme.

I'm currently at chapter 500+ and if the logic continues in this way, the whole world will indirectly centers to china.

Let me give you an example:

*He uses ancient chinese characters...

The whole human is doomed to believe that chinese are superior because lots of the other worlds he create indirectly shows chinese things.

Not to mention the players are almost all chinese.

I have this habit of finishing what I have already started.

its a world-building novel as he represents the power of a god/creator. Overall it is good plot and interesting experience of the MC. But I kinda hate the monotonous observance of he MC towards his creations and the ending is not good, lack of creativity towards the last chapters.

it starts pretty good and gets better but then it takes a dive like all chinese novels, it starts getting repetitive and stale after the demise of the Sorceror Civilization, after 150+ chapters everything is no longer new and interesting, the protagonist is also quite boring and has no motivation or goals in life he is what you call a complete salted fish, the worst is still not over, every character that seems to become something great is always female thus once again with the writer lower half doing the... more>> writing

majority of people would enjoy the first 2 major arcs as in the Sumerian/Gilgamesh arc and the Sorceror/Babylon, after that is boring and no longer worth reading because its not longer fresh.

is like playing the same game but then restarting with a new weapon and then doing it again, the first time is great the second is also good but after that its no longer enjoyable and the protagonist does not do anything to make it better because everything he does is so half ass is annoying.

Chapter 1-150= 4 Stars

Chapter 150+ = 2 Stars <<less

The story was good at the start, but got boring later on and it does have a HUGE defect. The fact hat everyone believes whatever the MC says out his mouth as FACTS and are not questioned (No matter which identity he's using at that moment). This is not obvious early on, but becomes more apparent later on, and it's very ridiculous.

I enjoyed the first 300 chapters but when diqi decided to make a world thats when things started going down.

A race only girls (Lmao of course its the ELF race, and the players want to go to that world to imp**gnate all elf.) Creatures that has ai chips in their brain (but they're all still dumb asf). Six path world (a major plot hole here, and this is when the MC started the nationalism part so disgusting.)

There are so many plotholes pls. And I hate the players so... more>> much, they constantly break the immersion of the story. All players have the same personality, they all nerd and BALD (the author keeps mentioning this for some reason).

Also I originally thought that there's probably equal amount of men to female ratio here. But I was wrong, while it might look like it, but actually all male protagonist here have died early on, or doesn't got much screentime. Like dao chengchang and diqi, they're the only male tier 8 gods currentl they are not mentioned that much. While the rest are all female, like are you really that miserable to constantly write female characters just so you can jerk off. <<less

Having finished the novel I have to edit this outdated review.

Synopsis:
... more>> The MC is a young man who loses all his relatively great success in society because of stomach cancer. Facing the slim probability of his survival, he quits the chemio and retires in his hometown, a chinese rural city.

Unexpectedly he encounters the dying Queen of a powerful alien species and impresses her by remaining calm in the face of a great existance like herself. Once this great being realizes that all beings are equal in front of death, she gives him a "tool", which can release spores of her race and control them, effectively making the MC the next generation of king.

Learning that these spores have the ability to accelerate their metabolism to astronomical levels, effectively evolving species in real time, the MC starts a sandbox in his garden as a way to pass his final months on earth.

What he doesn't know is that the potential of this race is much higher than he could ever think about!!

How the story progresses:

Spoiler

The spores will eventually evolve into people and full fledged civilizations, which will master all kinds of magical abilities that the MC will train in and use.

And to reach ever higher peaks he will create different sandboxes to deduce different systems of power, helping the general trend of the civilization at specific history nodes.

On top of all that, to help him make more and more advanced species, he creates a VR game where players from earth can evolve spores for him in a specific sandbox, and eventually send them to his various civilization sandboxes.

[collapse]
.

The bad and the good:

Spoiler

The good:

  • the obvious one: we can follow the epics of heroes in history and all the hymns of civilization in a short period of time;
  • we will also eventually experience all the lore and the geniuses the outside world has to offer;
  • the misunderstandings are hilarious, especially the players, as they always find a way to fill the history plot holes the MC inadvertently;
  • many things you may think were background plot holes at the start are eventually revealed to be just ignorance on our part (and I say this because from a certain point it's pretty obvious the background has been planned from the start)

The bad is unfortunately also present since the start of the novel:

  • the science used is clearly off (even if the rational links that follow are completely sound; I guess it was necessary to make magic in the real world) : it seems to use rational links to justify some magical arts, but it's like the author is someone who only watched short videos on tiktok to know the science (other that the soul ones which we can't say much about), an example is the quantum arts, which are said to be blocked by the density of a neutron star because they work with ultra small particles that can't pass through such densities, but in reality quantic particles aren't really particles anymore, they are also probabilities that can obviously "pass" through a neutron star.
  • all science is correct of you don't check it: this is a problem that I found mostly in the early stages, so not really a big problem, an example is how the primordial ocean of the MC first sandbox can't have greater life because plants haven't appeared yet and so the oxigen necessary to have multicellular organisms hasn't appeared yet, but is that so?! Isn't the sandbox still on earth, where there's already a bunch of oxigen?!;
  • the MC only aknowledges the blood and tears shed by whoever advances the civilization in the main sandbox, another flaw present predominantly at the start. The players who literally go bald from overworking are exploited by the MC without remorse or praise. They don't even
know what great things they have already accomplished, maybe only later learning about it if they are clever and lucky enough. They are even abused by the MC for their curiosity (one of the most humane and things, which is also something the MC lacked in his sandboxes at one time. THIS is my greatest complaint) (I'm looking at you Akina Speedster bro).
    [collapse]
In the end a lot of the flaws are only there (or evident) at the very start, it's obvious the story has been meticulously planned at one point.

Very reminiscent of The Legendary Mechanic. Interestingly enough, I decided to drop both because I cannot stand the not-so-subtle harem elements in the story. Fantasy authors who don’t know a sh*t about romance should refrain from adding suggestive plots to their novels. It just distracts from the main storyline and does not add anything of value.

Despite the flaws it have, the unnecessary rush in the real world (the MC isn't burdened with life span, why make all the development in the real world in the span of weeks or months?), nationalism, only chinese server or f*ck you (he should have made the world larger and allow most people to create better unique and larger chances of better creatures)

The development of the worlds described here are truly unique and interesting

worth the 4 star rating despite the flaws

Ofc depending on the translator too

I want to talk about some of the demerits other reviewers have put forward. One of the proposed problems with the story is the readers finding it ridiculous people believe the MC. This stems from the viewpoint. Readers follow the world developing from macro to micro in almost reverse. When you see it like that, no way you are not thinking about it in a more scrutinizing light. As a result finding things ridiculous, in CN novels it is rare to see an almighty being lie because they have almost... more>> no reason to do so. When people read things like coiling dragon or stellar transformations and read the last character introduction and the telling of his backstory how many thought well that seems like BS to me? You did not then why then do you think characters would do so here? To be fair the story the MC does is even tied into earth history if you have not read far enough to see that much then the plot hole you purpose is simply jumping the gun to complain about the show.

Another point against is how the plot goes away from the MC the true beauty of this is how the MC does in fact not need to be the central character all the time. The spotlight goes and comes from him and honestly by the time the cast is done developing picking favorites becomes somewhat difficult. Indicating a better-developed cast, not a flaw in MC development.

P.S things come full circle a lot so he does end up being very central to the story in the end.

Great beginning. Was a little bored after around chapter 900 but picked up close to the end. It's an okay ending. Worth the read

Stuff I didn't like:

Spoiler

The players sort of stop being useful/unique later on but it makes sense why. I also feel like some othet stuff could have been explored more early on, for example,

1) Di Qi finding more worlds

2) everything with Carolyn (but her part of the story was still good, just would like more focus on her)

3) the heavenly music sect could've been more interesting

4) I would've liked a call back or more information about his life before everything on earth

5) the zergs were explored well but it was very late into the story and it felt a bit rushed

6) Just in general everything after about chapter 1000 felt a bit rush every now and then. I think all the chapters from then on were about 500 words shorter and there were no more double chapters

The main character also felt a bit inconsistent or his motives weren't explained enough. He wasn't given much depth. In general most people's motivations don't really go into much detail.

There's quite a bit of stuff brought up out of nowhere, where it sort of makes sense but some more foreshadowing or ease into the situation would've been better.

Also the fight descriptions later on after the martial arts sort of "take over" is very lackluster and I found myself skimming over it.

[collapse]

Stuff I liked:

Spoiler

Was just a really cool and interesting book. The first 3/5 of the book is very good. The first few civilisations are interesting and the way they connect together is very cool. The way the bloodlines interact is very neat and I wish it was explored more. A few more interesting combinations would've been cool early on. Another good place to show off would've been later on when the something something palace gets introduced and you find out they have a bunch of amazing bloodlines. Like the lie detector/chaos fish. Also the humour with the players is better than okay. Constantly aiming for being bald was the best running gag.

I'm split on all the misunderstandings, it makes the story unique but it feels like the main character doesn't really have a say (even though he usually just goes with the flow).

And for the ending

Spoiler

I was really hoping it would've been the universe or his future self giving him all the good opportunities to set up for a fight. Himself for breaking through to a new realm like he does before and the universe maybe another way to expand like they mentioned at the end about the "potentially other level 11s"

What I hate about this is the fact that eventhough he knows many people know that the worlds he created are a real world, he still uses Chinese characters and chinese myth in world structures and world building. In one of the arc, he created a bona fide buddhist temple, chinese characters and even a buddhist monks skeleton. Eventhough he knows people are aware these worlds are real, he is indifferent of what they think. People genuinely think that the myths of the past were real (with bvious chinese supremacy stuff) thus creating false history. Because of him people think myths were real thus making them think of false historical evidence and this, as a History student is very infuriating.

Honestly, by looking at all the 5 star reviews for those who have completed the novel, it should be clear that the series improves as time goes on. The novel really starts to ramp up once the MC finishes his first world and starts working on other "worlds". It gets really fun once all the little worlds he creates starts to interconnect and the character building for the entire cast (both Earthling and ant people) is fantastic. I can say that it will take time for the world building (literally)... more>> to start ramping up so for those on the fence about the first couple chapters, I suggest waiting until a few hundred chapters are finished for reading. <<less

Honestly This is awsome novel if you like OP MC creating his own world. MC is like creator and he is very petty. Its really funny. This is better version of low dimensional game. Needless to say but ofcourse you need to turn of your brain if you want to enjoy it fully. Still it does not get that bad and many things mske perfect sense. It is very fun novel you will love it.
